  1. Good evening, everyone, and thank you, Peter and Beth, for reading and praying.

  2. As Peter said, my name is Luca, if we've not met before,

  3. and we're looking at the second section of James tonight together.

  4. I wonder if you've ever heard of the deep sea anglerfish.

  5. It's a very ugly, very rare fish that lives only in deep, dark waters.

  6. You can Google it at home or pretend to be on your Bible app and we won't notice.

  7. It's called an anglerfish because it literally goes fishing, and it goes fishing with a bait.

  8. It has a sort of fishing pole protruding from its head, and at the end of it, it has glowing bacteria.

  9. And this fishing pole is called a lure because they use it to lure their prey in.

  10. And the fish prey is so intrigued by the glowing light that it's all it sees.

  11. I will not pay any attention to the big fish behind the light ready to eat it.

  12. That light is all it sees.

  13. It forgets about everything else, and then it gets closer and closer until it's too late,

  14. and it gets swallowed by the anglerfish.

  15. James says that's us and temptation.

  16. Last week, we read about trials, how the opportunities that God gives us to become more perseverant,

  17. and ultimately to strengthen our faith.

  18. Today, we've read about temptation and how temptation leads to death.

  19. And what's interesting is that in the original Greek, the same word is used for temptation and trials.

  20. And yet, James couldn't make it any clearer that they are very different things, opposites, in fact.

  21. And that's why our translations use two different words.

  22. And the main difference is the outcome of the two.

  23. Trials lead to the crown of life.

  24. Temptation leads to death.

  25. So let's dive in and see what James tells us about temptation.

  26. And we're going to split the passage into two sections.

  27. We'll look at deadly desires from within in the first few verses, 13 to 15,

  28. and saving truth from above in verses 16 to 18.

  29. Deadly desires from within and saving truth from above.

  30. The Bible is very clear on the fact that God tests us.

  31. Abraham in Genesis 22 is an example.

  32. God asks him to sacrifice his only son, Isaac,

  33. on whom God's personal promise to Abraham of countless descendants entirely depended.

  34. And John tells us in his gospel, in chapter 6, verse 5,

  35. that Jesus tests Peter when he asks him where he thinks they could possibly buy enough bread

  36. for the 5,000 people who gathered to listen to Jesus.

  37. And so as James said a few verses before these,

  38. the testing of our faith produces perseverance,

  39. and perseverance makes us mature and complete until we receive the crown of life.

  40. And Archie told us all about it last week.

  41. But now James warns us against thinking that since God can allow trials,

  42. then he's also responsible if we sin when we fail to resist temptation.

  43. So he says in verse 13,

  44. when tempted, no one should say God is tempting me.

  45. For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.

  46. And so he then gives us a very helpful description of the difference between the two.

  47. And so while the aim of trials is to strengthen our faith,

  48. temptation on the other hand is there literally just to make us fail.

  49. Its whole aim is to get us to sin.

  50. And see the steps in this process that James describes in verses 14 and 15.

  51. Steps of a process that unfortunately we all know too well

  52. from our own everyday personal experience with sin.

  53. It all starts with desires.

  54. But notice how it's evil desires that drag us away.

  55. Because there is such a thing as good desires.

  56. We all desire to eat, maybe to have a romantic relationship,

  57. to be able to afford caring for ourselves and for our families.

  58. But all of these desires can turn into evil desires.

  59. When desiring food becomes gluttony,

  60. when desiring a romantic relationship turns into adultery,

  61. or desiring to earn money turns into greed.

  62. And it's these evil desires that drag us away,

  63. that lure us in and get us swallowed by the anglerfish.

  64. And also the process does not stop there.

  65. James uses another very powerful image,

  66. conception and birth.

  67. And so once desire has conceived,

  68. once that line into evil desire has been crossed,

  69. then it generates sin.

  70. And sin can grow.

  71. If we're unrepentant, we can let sin fester.

  72. We can let it roam free inside of us

  73. and let it grow and grow and grow.

  74. And then when it is fully grown,

  75. he says sin gives birth to death.

  76. Giving birth to death.

  77. What a paradox.

  78. If we don't believe in Christ,

  79. unfortunately the Bible is really clear.

  80. If we're not a Christian,

  81. we are headed for eternal death.

  82. But James is warning us Christians in verse 15

  83. about the deadly consequences

  84. that unrepentant sin can have in our lives too.

  85. He comes back time and time again in this book

  86. to the importance of actions

  87. that reflect our faith.

  88. And so yes,

  89. a gospel-believing Christian

  90. can let sin grow over time

  91. by not taking it to God in repentance

  92. and not asking the Spirit for help

  93. to keep fighting it.

  94. It will lead us astray.

  95. It will make us wander away from the truth

  96. with terrible consequences for us

  97. and those around us.

  98. Just because we're saved,

  99. we don't get a free pass

  100. to let sin grow in us.

  101. And James will say in chapter 5

  102. that if we help a brother or sister

  103. turn from the error of their way,

  104. we will save them from death

  105. and cover over a multitude of sins.

  106. So do we see how different temptation is

  107. from trials?

  108. It's aimed at making evil desires

  109. have the better of us.

  110. It's aimed at making us just give up and sin.

  111. And so for this reason,

  112. temptation doesn't and cannot come from God

  113. is what James says in verse 13.

  114. God does not tempt it

  115. and God is not tempted.

  116. And I wonder if you're thinking like I did

  117. the first time I read the passage

  118. that actually God was indeed tempted

  119. in the person of Jesus

  120. when he was in the desert.

  121. We can read about it

  122. in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  123. And he was tempted in the sense

  124. that Satan tempted him.

  125. Jesus was exposed to temptation

  126. and he had desires

  127. because he was fully human.

  128. But he was also fully God.

  129. And so his desires could not go beyond that.

  130. God wouldn't let himself be enticed

  131. by sinful desires like we do,

  132. which is what temptation is about.

  133. And so just as God cannot be tempted,

  134. he also would never do that to us,

  135. tempt us so that we sin.

  136. Matthew 7 says that as a father,

  137. he'd never give us a stone

  138. if we ask for bread or a snake,

  139. if we ask for a fish,

  140. let alone lure us into sin.

  141. The evil desires, says James,

  142. come from within us.

  143. They're down to our sinful nature,

  144. to our condition of broken humans,

  145. separated from God,

  146. since sin entered the world in Genesis.

  147. So if we were to think about

  148. how we could apply this to our own lives,

  149. I think one very direct application

  150. from all of this is, of course,

  151. let's not attribute to God any temptations.

  152. If we ever think,

  153. why would God make me sin in this or that way?

  154. He just didn't.

  155. The trials that we endure

  156. and that strengthen our faith

  157. are trials that we endure

  158. because we are trying to live a Christian life.

  159. But sins are our own doing.

  160. They're our own choice.

  161. And the challenges that we face

  162. for having fallen into sin,

  163. they have nothing to do with God.

  164. What we're called to do is

  165. draw near to God,

  166. to resist temptation

  167. when it comes our way.

  168. And secondly,

  169. as another application for us,

  170. let's not play with fire.

  171. We must not underestimate

  172. the danger of evil desires and sin.

  173. We have to learn to recognize sin

  174. in its early stages

  175. by being in communion with God,

  176. by dwelling in his word

  177. and letting the spirit

  178. convict us of sin.

  179. James gives us in these verses

  180. a very stark reminder

  181. that sin is serious business.

  182. It doesn't matter how many years

  183. I've been a Christian for,

  184. how many generations

  185. my family has been going to church for,

  186. we are all vulnerable to sin.

  187. And don't we know it all too well,

  188. unfortunately,

  189. how easy it is to underestimate sin,

  190. how comfortable sometimes

  191. it can feel to play with it,

  192. to let that desire grow

  193. rather than run to God

  194. and get rid of it

  195. there and then.

  196. And so can I invite us all

  197. to have a serious think about

  198. what sins

  199. we maybe are being too relaxed about?

  200. Do we tend to join in

  201. during banter at work

  202. that we know brings anything

  203. but glory to God

  204. because it's just for a laugh

  205. so we can make an exception?

  206. Maybe sometimes we even make up excuses

  207. that we're doing it

  208. just to mingle,

  209. to integrate,

  210. so that we'll have opportunities

  211. to evangelize.

  212. Do we let jealousy

  213. shape some of our comments

  214. on that other family member

  215. and it's fine

  216. because it's family after all?

  217. Or is it sexual sins

  218. that we will not confront

  219. because we just get

  220. too much pleasure out of them?

  221. I think we can all imagine

  222. we all know

  223. how all of this

  224. can grow over time

  225. and have deadly consequences.

  226. So James tells us

  227. sin is not something

  228. that we get to feel

  229. and be violent about.

  230. Something that we know is bad

  231. but we can let a bit of it in

  232. because we will know

  233. when to stop.

  234. No, he says sin

  235. is here to kill.

  236. And so as Christians

  237. we have no excuse

  238. to dwell on it.

  239. We must run away from it.

  240. We must run straight to God.

  241. And that's for us to do.

  242. Helped by the Spirit.

  243. God doesn't,

  244. will not tempt us

  245. but we must turn away from sin

  246. and turn to him.

  247. So let's not attribute

  248. temptation to God

  249. and let's take sin seriously

  250. and not play with fire.

  251. Let's move on to verses 16 to 18 now.

  252. We've talked about

  253. deadly desires from within

  254. but thankfully

  255. James does not stop

  256. at this bleak picture

  257. because verses 16 to 18

  258. tell us that there is

  259. a saving truth

  260. coming to the rescue

  261. from above.

  262. He opens verse 16 with

  263. don't be deceived.

  264. He must have reasons

  265. to believe that these Christians

  266. are being deceived.

  267. There's some sort of deception

  268. going on

  269. and maybe

  270. they got things mixed up

  271. or maybe they're exposed

  272. to the teachings

  273. of someone who did

  274. or maybe he's just worried

  275. that they'll misunderstand

  276. the whole relation

  277. between God's trials

  278. and Satan's temptations.

  279. So after explaining

  280. what does not

  281. come from above

  282. he tells us now

  283. what does

  284. come from God

  285. and that's

  286. every good

  287. and perfect gift.

  288. Every good

  289. and perfect gift

  290. comes from above.

  291. And he goes on

  292. to give us

  293. a spectacular

  294. description

  295. of our gift

  296. dispensing God

  297. and he does that

  298. in just a handful

  299. of words

  300. in verse 17.

  301. The father

  302. of the heavenly

  303. lights

  304. who does not change

  305. like shifting

  306. shadows.

  307. What else

  308. could come

  309. from such a God

  310. other than

  311. every good

  312. and perfect gift?

  313. I find that

  314. there's nothing

  315. like a good

  316. reminder

  317. that our God

  318. is the creator

  319. of the universe

  320. the father

  321. of the heavenly

  322. lights

  323. to give us

  324. perspective

  325. when we're

  326. lost in the

  327. chaos of our

  328. everyday struggles.

  329. Maybe you climb

  330. up a hill

  331. and look around you

  332. maybe you just

  333. watch the grass

  334. on your lawn

  335. grow out of

  336. just rain

  337. and sunlight

  338. or maybe you

  339. watch a David Attenborough

  340. documentary

  341. and remember

  342. that if God

  343. was able to

  344. make all of

  345. this happen

  346. he must be

  347. a powerful

  348. a creative

  349. a good

  350. God

  351. the father

  352. of the heavenly

  353. lights

  354. who doesn't

  355. change like

  356. shifting shadows

  357. and maybe even

  358. better than a

  359. David Attenborough

  360. documentary

  361. when it comes

  362. to a sound

  363. description of

  364. God

  365. would be the

  366. Bible itself

  367. which is why

  368. we read

  369. Psalm 145

  370. it describes

  371. that same

  372. God

  373. that James

  374. is talking

  375. about here

  376. verse 9

  377. of the psalm

  378. says

  379. a Lord

  380. who is

  381. good to

  382. all

  383. that's why

  384. every good

  385. and perfect

  386. gift comes

  387. from him

  388. in verse

  389. 12

  390. the psalmist

  391. says

  392. a Lord

  393. whose kingdom

  394. is covered

  395. in glorious

  396. splendor

  397. because he's

  398. the father

  399. of the heavenly

  400. light

  401. he created

  402. everything

  403. that we see

  404. and in verse

  405. 13

  406. the psalm

  407. says

  408. a Lord

  409. whose kingdom

  410. is everlasting

  411. because he

  412. doesn't

  413. change

  414. like shifting

  415. shadows

  416. and I'd

  417. encourage you

  418. to read

  419. the whole

  420. psalm

  421. again

  422. maybe in

  423. your own

  424. time

  425. maybe to

  426. start the

  427. week

  428. tomorrow

  429. it's a

  430. really

  431. uplifting

  432. praise of

  433. God

  434. for who

  435. he is

  436. as a

  437. good

  438. a loving

  439. a sovereign

  440. and eternal

  441. father

  442. and so

  443. just like

  444. the psalmist

  445. James wants

  446. us to

  447. realize

  448. that all

  449. of this

  450. continuous

  451. shifting

  452. this instability

  453. that is so

  454. intrinsically

  455. part of

  456. our nature

  457. as fallen

  458. human beings

  459. this constant

  460. changing

  461. and often

  462. for the worse

  463. if we're

  464. honest

  465. that we

  466. live

  467. day in

  468. day out

  469. this is

  470. in no way

  471. a trait

  472. of our

  473. God

  474. so while

  475. we're

  476. dragged away

  477. by our

  478. desires

  479. that then

  480. give birth

  481. to sin

  482. and lead

  483. to death

  484. God

  485. remains

  486. unmovable

  487. he's the

  488. father

  489. of the

  490. whole

  491. creation

  492. and he's

  493. been in

  494. his splendid

  495. kingdom

  496. since the

  497. beginning

  498. and while

  499. we're

  500. shifting

  501. or slipping

  502. into sin

  503. he stays

  504. there

  505. like a

  506. rock

  507. and what's

  508. key in

  509. all of

  510. is in

  511. verse 18

  512. is that

  513. he's not

  514. just sitting

  515. on the

  516. clouds

  517. looking down

  518. on us

  519. and scoffing

  520. at our

  521. incapability

  522. to resist

  523. temptation

  524. he offers

  525. us

  526. salvation

  527. he gives

  528. us birth

  529. through the

  530. word of

  531. truth

  532. he says

  533. and here's

  534. that same

  535. image of

  536. given birth

  537. that we

  538. had in

  539. verse 15

  540. but this

  541. isn't the

  542. birth of

  543. death

  544. this is

  545. our second

  546. birth

  547. as saved

  548. children of

  549. God

  550. just like

  551. Jesus had

  552. explained to

  553. Nicodemus in

  554. John chapter

    John 3 chapter mention

  555. 3

  556. he gives

  557. us birth

  558. through the

  559. word of

  560. truth

  561. and what's

  562. the word of

  563. truth

  564. it's the

  565. gospel

  566. it's a

  567. message that

  568. Jesus

  569. God's only

  570. son

  571. died on

  572. the cross

  573. for our

  574. sins

  575. and this

  576. word of

  577. truth

  578. this message

  579. of salvation

  580. it has

  581. such a

  582. radical

  583. effect

  584. on us

  585. that it's

  586. like we're

  587. born again

  588. out with the

  589. old

  590. in with the

  591. new

  592. and how could

  593. it be

  594. otherwise

  595. when accepting

  596. the word of

  597. truth

  598. completely

  599. subverts

  600. the whole

  601. of eternity

  602. for us

  603. we go from

  604. eternal death

  605. after this

  606. earthly life

  607. to eternal

  608. life

  609. there's a

  610. beautiful

  611. word in

  612. verse 18

  613. that I

  614. missed the

  615. first couple

  616. of times

  617. that I

  618. read the

  619. passage

  620. and it's

  621. chose

  622. it says

  623. that God

  624. chose

  625. to save

  626. us

  627. we have

  628. to realize

  629. that there's

  630. nothing random

  631. about God's

  632. work in

  633. our lives

  634. there's God

  635. who doesn't

  636. change like

  637. shifting shadows

  638. didn't just

  639. get fed up

  640. with our

  641. pleas for

  642. help one

  643. day and

  644. then reluctantly

  645. decided to

  646. offer us a

  647. way out of

  648. our misery

  649. no he chose

  650. to give us

  651. birth through

  652. the word of

  653. truth or in

  654. other words to

  655. save us from

  656. eternal death

  657. and give us

  658. eternal life

  659. instead

  660. so let me

  661. encourage us all

  662. to think about

  663. a very practical

  664. application again

  665. for all of

  666. us to

  667. yeah to

  668. ponder on off

  669. the back of

  670. these verses

  671. and especially

  672. off the back of

  673. James's exhortation

  674. to not be

  675. deceived in

  676. verse 16

  677. as I prepared

  678. for this I

  679. thought in

  680. what ways

  681. might I be

  682. deceived in

  683. 21st century

  684. Edinburgh

  685. when it comes to

  686. these truths

  687. that James is

  688. reminding us of

  689. that every good

  690. and perfect gift

  691. comes from

  692. God

  693. and there are

  694. so many ways

  695. of thinking

  696. so many

  697. philosophies all

  698. around us

  699. that try to

  700. undermine the

  701. character of

  702. God

  703. and to be

  704. honest some

  705. might not be

  706. that different

  707. from what

  708. was out there

  709. 2000 years

  710. ago

  711. a society

  712. may be trying

  713. to convince

  714. us that the

  715. God of the

  716. gospel is only

  717. one of the

  718. many gods

  719. that are out

  720. there

  721. or that God

  722. doesn't even

  723. exist and

  724. everything that

  725. comes our way

  726. is the result

  727. of chance

  728. or perhaps

  729. not that

  730. things

  731. happen by

  732. chance

  733. but as a

  734. direct result

  735. of our

  736. actions

  737. because we

  738. are the

  739. makers

  740. of our

  741. own fate

  742. or maybe

  743. we're told

  744. that the

  745. God of the

  746. Bible

  747. has to be

  748. a mean

  749. God

  750. not the

  751. source of

  752. every good

  753. thing

  754. because he

  755. allows us

  756. to suffer

  757. and so

  758. like the

  759. people that

  760. James writes

  761. to we have

  762. to be careful

  763. not to be

  764. deceived

  765. perhaps not

  766. many of us

  767. would recognize

  768. any of these

  769. statements

  770. these philosophies

  771. as actively

  772. dangerous

  773. for us

  774. personally

  775. nothing that

  776. we would

  777. ever easily

  778. accept as a

  779. truth

  780. but we

  781. certainly don't

  782. want to make

  783. the mistake

  784. of letting

  785. our guards

  786. down

  787. as Christians

  788. we would

  789. probably not

  790. go around

  791. saying that

  792. we believe

  793. that we are

  794. the makers

  795. of our own

  796. fate

  797. that everything

  798. that happens

  799. to us

  800. is thanks

  801. to us

  802. but is that

  803. what our

  804. actions

  805. and our

  806. everyday

  807. conversation

  808. show

  809. as we

  810. live

  811. have to

  812. live

  813. in an

  814. individualistic

  815. capitalistic

  816. society

  817. and so

  818. I think

  819. the question

  820. for us

  821. is where

  822. do we

  823. go

  824. to get

  825. our

  826. understanding

  827. of who

  828. God

  829. is

  830. do we

  831. go to

  832. the word

  833. of truth

  834. as James

  835. calls it

  836. the gospel

  837. or do we

  838. let what

  839. the world

  840. around us

  841. thinks

  842. of God

  843. slowly

  844. but surely

  845. get into

  846. our heads

  847. and in

  848. turn

  849. then inform

  850. our actions

  851. and our

  852. words

  853. how much

  854. do we

  855. actually

  856. protect

  857. our minds

  858. and hearts

  859. from the

  860. current

  861. world

  862. thinking

  863. do we

  864. do that

  865. by running

  866. to the

  867. only source

  868. of truth

  869. the word

  870. of God

  871. by regularly

  872. sitting with

  873. it and

  874. listening to

  875. God speak

  876. to our

  877. hearts

  878. through it

  879. and I know

  880. from personal

  881. experience

  882. I imagine

  883. many of you

  884. would be able

  885. to relate

  886. that there

  887. can often

  888. be a

  889. dangerous

  890. imbalance

  891. between

  892. how much

  893. time I

  894. spend with

  895. the word

  896. of God

  897. whether it's

  898. by reading

  899. it by

  900. myself

  901. listening to

  902. sermons

  903. praying

  904. reading

  905. Christian

  906. books

  907. compared to

  908. how much

  909. time I

  910. spend letting

  911. what the

  912. world thinks

  913. creep into

  914. my heart

  915. and mind

  916. and it

  917. does show

  918. in subtle

  919. ways in

  920. how we

  921. conduct

  922. ourselves

  923. in how

  924. we speak

  925. and how

  926. we think

  927. maybe in

  928. how we

  929. manage our

  930. time and

  931. money

  932. so as a

  933. Christian

  934. where do I

  935. get my

  936. understanding

  937. of who

  938. God is

  939. is it

  940. the latest

  941. Netflix

  942. series that

  943. I've been

  944. watching

  945. is it

  946. the celebrity

  947. that I

  948. follow on

  949. Instagram

  950. is it

  951. politics or

  952. sport commentators

  953. whatever you're

  954. exposed to

  955. even family

  956. or friends

  957. and I'm not

  958. saying we'd

  959. be repeating

  960. verbatim what

  961. any of these

  962. people say

  963. about God

  964. but unless

  965. I am in

  966. communion with

  967. him through

  968. his word

  969. and nothing

  970. will raise a

  971. red flag in

  972. my mind

  973. as I'm

  974. exposed to

  975. lies about

  976. him and

  977. they will

  978. start creeping

  979. in

  980. and then

  981. if any of

  982. us are not

  983. quite sure

  984. where we

  985. sit what

  986. we think

  987. about God

  988. and the

  989. gospel or

  990. maybe we

  991. think we're

  992. sure it's

  993. not for us

  994. it's certainly

  995. not the

  996. truth then

  997. I'll ask

  998. you why

  999. are you

  1000. basing that

  1001. on is it

  1002. what anyone

  1003. out there has

  1004. to say about

  1005. it are you

  1006. letting God

  1007. introduce

  1008. yourself himself

  1009. to you so

  1010. that you can

  1011. make an

  1012. informed decision

  1013. and yes there

  1014. are difficult

  1015. parts but you

  1016. might be surprised

  1017. how direct and

  1018. simple the main

  1019. message of

  1020. salvation actually

  1021. is and then

  1022. yes there will

  1023. be questions

  1024. and in which

  1025. case please do

  1026. come to us

  1027. him anyone in

  1028. the leadership

  1029. team anyone you

  1030. know from church

  1031. anyone in your

  1032. family who could

  1033. sit with you and

  1034. help you and

  1035. wrestle with God's

  1036. message

  1037. so as we conclude

  1038. tonight and as

  1039. we prepare our

  1040. hearts for communion

  1041. in a few minutes

  1042. let's take what

  1043. the word of God

  1044. teaches us through

  1045. James in this

  1046. passage our

  1047. condition of

  1048. broken sinners

  1049. is serious and

  1050. the responsibility

  1051. for our sins is

  1052. ours we cannot

  1053. look for

  1054. scapegoats and

  1055. God will

  1056. certainly not be

  1057. one if God

  1058. tests us it's

  1059. for our benefit

  1060. if we sin it's

  1061. because we don't

  1062. let the spirit

  1063. work in us and

  1064. we let ourselves

  1065. get dragged away

  1066. by our own

  1067. desires but it's

  1068. not God who put

  1069. the angler fish

  1070. there and when

  1071. we are attracted

  1072. by the angler

  1073. fish when we see

  1074. that lure dangling

  1075. in front of our

  1076. eyes and we

  1077. can't see anything

  1078. else what we

  1079. can't do what we

  1080. must do is just

  1081. turn around and

  1082. swim swim into the

  1083. arms of our

  1084. creator because he

  1085. is there offering

  1086. salvation the

  1087. creator of the

  1088. whole universe he

  1089. chose to save us

  1090. despite our sinful

  1091. condition Romans 5

  1092. 8 reads that God

  1093. shows his love for

  1094. us and that while

  1095. we were still

  1096. sinners Christ died

  1097. for us and he

  1098. died to give us

  1099. birth and it's his

  1100. death that we're

  1101. going to be

  1102. remembering prayerfully

  1103. in a moment so

  1104. let's rejoice and be

  1105. thankful in the

  1106. knowledge that the

  1107. same word of God

  1108. that so clearly shows

  1109. us how unworthy we

  1110. are just as clearly

  1111. invites us to accept

  1112. the salvation that's

  1113. being offered to us

  1114. by the God who

  1115. dispenses every good

  1116. and perfect gift

  1117. let's pray

  1118. father we praise you

1119. as the creator of the

  1120. whole universe father

1121. father you are a rock

  1122. you don't change

1123. you the same that you

  1124. always were

1125. and we thank you for

  1126. your perfect gift of

  1127. salvation

1128. we ask you to forgive

  1129. us for all the

  1130. things that we

  1131. attribute to you

  1132. father when we're not

  1133. in communion with you

  1134. when we're not

  1135. basing our thoughts and

  1136. words on what the

  1137. word teaches us about

1138. you and we ask for

  1139. forgiveness for every

  1140. single time that we're

1141. so ready to just jump

1142. into sin and we thank

  1143. you father for that

1144. word of truth for the

  1145. gospel for that

  1146. sacrifice that has

  1147. given us eternal life

1148. and so father we ask

1149. you we ask your spirit

  1150. help in resisting

  1151. temptation

  1152. in being aware of

  1153. sin father

1154. and we ask you to help

  1155. us as brothers and

  1156. sisters father as a

  1157. congregation also point

1158. each other to you and

1159. look out for each other

  1160. when we're struggling

1161. so father thank you for

1162. for the good news in

1163. your bible thank you in

1164. your word thank you for

1165. the good news in this

1166. passage that you are our

  1167. savior father you've

1168. chosen to save us we

  1169. cannot thank you enough

  1170. for this father

  1171. amen

  1172. you
