  1. Thank you very much, Ellen. Well, good morning, everyone. As has been mentioned already, my name is Alistair and it is my privilege to be the assistant pastor here at Brunsfield.

  2. And this morning it is my joy to open up Job chapter two together with you all.

  3. So please do have that passage open in front of you. We're going to be diving in and out.

  4. But before we do that, let us turn to our God in prayer. Let's pray.

  5. Father, when we come to a passage like this, we have so many questions.

  6. We have so much experience of suffering in our individual lives.

  7. And Lord, we ask this morning that we would submit to your word.

  8. And Lord, we echo that song that we have just listened to or sung at home.

  9. Lord, we need you. This very hour, we need you.

  10. And Father, we pray that the words of my mouth and that the meditations of all of our hearts would be pleasing to you, our rock and our redeemer.

  11. Amen.

  12. In 1967, Johnny Erickson Tada was an athletic 17 year old girl.

  13. And one day she went out swimming with her sister in a bay and she dove off a raft into shallow water, hitting her head.

  14. From that moment on, Johnny has been confined to a wheelchair and doesn't have the use of her body from the neck down.

  15. She says that as she heard that news about her paralysis in her mind, she cried out to God and she said, God, I can't, I won't live like this.

  16. But knowing that she couldn't physically take her own life, she decided to ruin her life emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

  17. Telling her family to cut her off, basically, to leave her in a dark room day and night and to never come in and see her.

  18. She wanted to lie in darkness.

  19. Her physical suffering had brought her to the end of herself.

  20. And it was in one of those dark rooms that she cried, God, if you won't let me die, show me how to live.

  21. And then Christian friends gathered around her and opened the Bible with her.

  22. And she says that over time she learnt a wonderful truth.

  23. That sometimes God allows what he hates to happen, like suffering and paralysis.

  24. To bring forth Christ in her life, the hope of glory.

  25. Joanie now is a regular speaker about the reality of suffering and the comfort that the gospel can bring to those in pain.

  26. The hope that people can have as they know that even our suffering is not outwith the control of a good God.

  27. She says that her suffering, or she sees her suffering, in the perspective of eternity.

  28. And that's what we're going to be thinking about this morning.

  29. Perspective in suffering.

  30. So last week we looked at the absolutely devastating suffering that Job went through.

  31. As a test to prove the genuineness of his faith.

  32. Now I'd encourage you, if you haven't listened to that sermon, please go and do that.

  33. And follow with us through the entire series on the book of Job.

  34. In Job chapter 1, Job lost all of his worldly possessions.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  35. All ten of his children died.

  36. All of his servants were killed.

  37. And yet even after all of that, the chapter ends with that wonderful declaration.

  38. The Lord gives.

  39. And the Lord takes away.

  40. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

  41. And we must acknowledge that the suffering Job goes through is very extreme.

  42. It's not the kind of suffering that many of us or any of us will go through.

  43. I can't imagine a time when any of us will lose our entire families.

  44. In fact, I pray that that tragedy never happens to any of us.

  45. But I think probably even more unimaginable than Job's suffering is the perspective he has in the middle of that overwhelming suffering.

  46. Job's perspective is to praise God in the pain that is his every single day.

  47. And Job doesn't come to that perspective overnight.

  48. That perspective is birthed out of years of contemplating who God is.

  49. And experiencing his gifts and his character.

  50. Job's perspective comes from a deep conviction of who God is.

  51. And I can say that as I've sat with many Christians over the years, I have seen this perspective in the flesh.

  52. In older saints.

  53. Who've experienced the Lord in marvelous ways.

  54. Both in times of joy and happiness.

  55. And in times of agony.

  56. And turmoil.

  57. Suffering for the average Christian today could mean the death of a loved one.

  58. Maybe you lose a parent.

  59. Or a sibling.

  60. Maybe in some tragedy a child is taken away from you after a short life.

  61. Or maybe the child doesn't even survive the full length of the pregnancy.

  62. Or maybe you lose a job and suddenly, you've been in that job for years and suddenly that financial stability is taken away.

  63. That assurance of a monthly paycheck is ripped away and you're at a loss.

  64. Maybe you go to the doctors.

  65. And you're diagnosed with cancer.

  66. Maybe you're told you have an incurable illness.

  67. Or maybe you're told you only have a few months to live.

  68. Maybe your suffering isn't physical but it is mental.

  69. And your day and night is plagued with anxiety that cripples you.

  70. Maybe it's the shadows of depression that plague your life.

  71. Or maybe you're still feeling the effects of childhood trauma.

  72. That plague every single day and you never seem to get any relief.

  73. Everything seems lost.

  74. Now none of that is the extent of suffering that Job's goes through.

  75. But it is suffering.

  76. And it is hard.

  77. We shouldn't look at Job and think that we need to suck it up because he suffered far worse than we ever will.

  78. But what we do need to do is look at Job's perspective and try to learn from it.

  79. And we need to learn from Job's grief.

  80. See I think our British nature means that many of us have a stiff upper lip approach to suffering.

  81. We put on a face and we say everything will be fine and we just power through.

  82. But in reality we all know that that is a superficial mask that covers something far less glamorous.

  83. The reality is that when we suffer we will cry.

  84. We will grieve.

  85. We will mourn.

  86. And we will feel pain.

  87. And you know what?

  88. That is okay.

  89. We need to learn to grieve like Job.

  90. There is nothing wrong with crying and showing emotion.

  91. We need to take off our masks and get vulnerable with each other.

  92. To create a safe space to suffer well for the glory of God.

  93. And Job will help us this morning see a healthy way to grieve.

  94. As well as a good perspective in suffering.

  95. So if last week in Job chapter 1 all the suffering or suffering was all about things external to Job.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  96. This morning in Job 2 it is all about physical suffering.

  97. We are going to look at verses 1 to 8 which are about suffering that breaches the skin.

  98. And then verses 9 to 13 which are all about three perspectives.

  99. Three responses to suffering in the ashes.

  100. So the first thing we see in this passage is suffering that breaches the skin.

  101. In verses 1 to 8.

  102. Suffering that breaches the skin.

  103. Now chapter 2 begins in an almost identical way as Job chapter 1 does.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  104. Satan shows up to this heavenly courtroom with God on his throne.

  105. And God is receiving reports from the supernatural beings through whom he is in absolute control of the goings on in the world.

  106. But there are two differences here.

  107. The first is in verse 1 where it says this.

  108. Read with me.

  109. Satan also came with them to present himself before him and that is before God.

  110. So this time it is explicit.

  111. The Satan, the accuser is there on purpose.

  112. He is invited as another created being through whom God governs the world.

  113. Satan is under the control of God.

  114. And he can only work within the parameters that God allows him to.

  115. Last week God allowed Satan to touch Job's possessions.

  116. Things external to himself that were very near and dear to him.

  117. We don't want to minimize that.

  118. And all of it was taken away.

  119. God let that happen in order to test the genuineness of Job's faith.

  120. The second difference between chapters 1 and 2 is in verse 3.

  121. Where it says this.

  122. Then the Lord said to Satan,

  123. Have you considered my servant Job?

  124. There is no one on earth like him.

  125. He is blameless and upright.

  126. A man who fears God and shuns evil.

  127. And he still maintains his integrity.

  128. Though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.

  129. There is repetition here.

  130. But there is also a bit of a difference.

  131. The repetition where God highlights Job as an example of godliness.

  132. An example of faith.

  133. Is there to highlight the futility of Satan's attempts to derail Job.

  134. But the difference is that God says it was all for nothing.

  135. It's as if God is saying,

  136. Satan, you did your worst.

  137. You broke this man's whole life.

  138. You took everything he had because I let you.

  139. And still his faith stands.

  140. At the end of chapter 1,

  141. you can imagine Satan sitting in the background rubbing his hands in glee.

  142. Thinking that Job will be destroyed.

  143. And that he will come to the end of himself.

  144. Satan wants Job dead and gone because of the genuineness of his faith.

  145. Satan is the accuser.

  146. The enemy who comes to steal, kill and destroy.

  147. He is the accuser whose desire is to minimize the glory of God.

  148. And he wants to make that happen by destroying Job.

  149. Who is an example of glorifying God in the midst of suffering.

  150. But in verse 3, God says triumphantly,

  151. Satan, your efforts were all for nothing.

  152. Job's faith stands strong.

  153. But Satan, as the accuser, is at it again in verse 4.

  154. Do you see?

  155. Skin for skin, he replied.

  156. A man will give all he has for his own life,

  157. but now stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones,

  158. and he will surely curse you to your face.

  159. Satan is saying that everything that has happened to Job

  160. is suffering related to things that are external to him.

  161. But if Job's body is attacked,

  162. then he will curse God.

  163. The only thing left is Job's body.

  164. Satan is covering all the bases in an attempt to bring Job

  165. to the point where he wants to die.

  166. Satan wants to rob God of any glory

  167. that he will get from Job's suffering well.

  168. When your health goes,

  169. when your body fails,

  170. when you are physically suffering,

  171. when your physical being,

  172. who we are, is attacked,

  173. we are vulnerable.

  174. Physical suffering is so hard

  175. because you might get to the point

  176. where you want to tear your body apart.

  177. The pain can be so overwhelming

  178. that you're consumed day and night with it,

  179. and you can't even remember

  180. what it's like to be pain-free anymore.

  181. Now maybe you're sitting there thinking,

  182. well, what is this 29-year-old?

  183. What does he know about physical suffering?

  184. Well, eight years ago,

  185. my journey of physical suffering began.

  186. Which is why I said last week

  187. that I have lived in the book of Job.

  188. For the last eight years,

  189. I've been suffering from a chronic illness

  190. that means I suffer constant,

  191. agonizing pain,

  192. 24-7, 365 days a year.

  193. There is no pain relief,

  194. and there is nothing the doctors can do to help me.

  195. There is no cure.

  196. So, suffering is not a stranger to me,

  197. but it is not a friend.

  198. It is a constant and familiar companion.

  199. And I say from experience,

  200. how we respond in those moments of pain

  201. and suffering is important

  202. because we can either make it push us towards God

  203. to live for Him in the midst of that pain,

  204. or we can make it push us away from God

  205. and hate Him.

  206. So, let's see how Job responds to his physical suffering.

  207. Verse 6.

  208. God gives Satan permission to afflict Job's body,

  209. but he must spare Job's life.

  210. Satan wants to destroy Job,

  211. but God wants to prove the genuineness of his faith

  212. through the test of suffering.

  213. So, friends, Satan is still bound

  214. under the sovereign rule of God

  215. and unable to go beyond what God allows.

  216. And so, verse 7.

  217. Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

  218. You see that immediately?

  219. It's that kind of language.

  220. And afflicted Job with painful sores

  221. from the soles of his feet

  222. to the crown on his head.

  223. Job's body is covered from head to toe

  224. with painful, pus-filled oozing sores.

  225. His skin is discolored, disfigured,

  226. and peeling off.

  227. Now sit with him for a second.

  228. Imagine how he feels with this absolute,

  229. total, intimate suffering.

  230. With no respite.

  231. No medicine.

  232. No cure.

  233. And to Job's knowledge,

  234. no reason.

  235. Imagine that burning sensation

  236. that he must be consuming him.

  237. The pain of not being able to sit

  238. without touching a sore that will erupt.

  239. The pain of day and night

  240. not resting or sleeping

  241. because of the pain he's in.

  242. The Lord's faithful servant suffers.

  243. Once a rich man loved by many,

  244. now poor, isolated and alone.

  245. In verse 8,

  246. Job took a piece of pottery,

  247. broken pottery,

  248. and scraped himself

  249. as he sat among the ashes.

  250. So Job leaves the town

  251. and he goes to the dump.

  252. He goes to the place

  253. outside the city

  254. where all the rubbish would be burned

  255. and he sits in the ashes

  256. and he mourns.

  257. He goes into isolation,

  258. all alone,

  259. abandoned,

  260. cut off from his friends,

  261. all but his wife,

  262. dead,

  263. scarred with sores

  264. that plague him day and night

  265. and he has no idea why.

  266. It's so bad that Job

  267. even takes a piece of pottery

  268. to take the pus out of these sores

  269. to at least get a little bit of relief

  270. if possible.

  271. It's important to say here

  272. that he is not self-harming,

  273. but he's trying to ease the pain

  274. a little bit.

  275. So Job is in isolated mourning

  276. and friends,

  277. we need to sit with him in that pain

  278. and realize the devastation

  279. that he is going through.

  280. And we need to learn something here

  281. about mourning.

  282. We need to know that there is

  283. absolutely nothing wrong

  284. with sitting on the ashes

  285. and weeping the suffering

  286. that you're going through.

  287. I know that for some of you,

  288. this week has been agony.

  289. It's been a nightmare.

  290. Things have happened

  291. that have kept you up at night.

  292. Doctors appointments

  293. have left you with decisions

  294. that you never wanted to make.

  295. It's been a week of despair.

  296. Or maybe it wasn't this week,

  297. but it is a long-term illness.

  298. Or maybe you're continuing

  299. to feel the effects

  300. of some trauma

  301. from your past friends.

  302. It is okay to mourn.

  303. In fact, in the Bible,

  304. it is expected

  305. that when suffering

  306. comes your way,

  307. you take a seat

  308. with Job in the ashes

  309. and you weep.

  310. In the UK,

  311. we hide behind

  312. a stiff upper lip.

  313. We don't like

  314. to think of pain

  315. in our lives

  316. or our bodies

  317. because it's hard.

  318. And we don't like

  319. to show emotions.

  320. But that is suppressing

  321. the very emotions

  322. that God has gifted us with

  323. in order to help us

  324. in the midst

  325. of our suffering.

  326. It is okay to grieve.

  327. It's okay to cry.

  328. It's okay to mourn.

  329. And it is okay

  330. to ask why.

  331. The book of Psalms

  332. is full of that kind

  333. of lament

  334. and grief.

  335. So we can go to God

  336. with our hard questions

  337. and our physical pain

  338. and cry out to Him.

  339. Psalm 13 says,

  340. How long, O Lord?

  341. Will you forget me forever?

  342. How long will you hide

  343. your face from me?

  344. Psalm 10.

  345. Why, O Lord,

  346. do you stand far away?

  347. Why do you hide yourself

  348. in times of trouble?

  349. And in Psalm 88,

  350. the psalmist describes

  351. darkness

  352. as his closest friend.

  353. Brothers and sisters in Christ,

  354. in our pain,

  355. in our suffering,

  356. we can and we should

  357. grieve and mourn.

  358. When suffering breaches the skin,

  359. Job sits on the ash heap

  360. and he mourns.

  361. And as he sits

  362. on those ashes,

  363. mourning his loss,

  364. mourning his suffering,

  365. in verses 9 to 13,

  366. we see three different responses

  367. to suffering in the ashes.

  368. Three different responses

  369. to suffering in the ashes.

  370. Now there's one bad response

  371. and two good responses here.

  372. And I hope that seeing

  373. these responses

  374. will help us

  375. as we suffer,

  376. but also as we help

  377. and care for those

  378. others who suffer.

  379. So the first response

  380. is the bad one

  381. in verse 9

  382. and it is the response

  383. of a suffering spouse.

  384. Read verse 9 with me.

  385. His wife said to him,

  386. are you still

  387. maintaining your integrity?

  388. Just curse God

  389. and die.

  390. I'll take a step back

  391. from this for a second.

  392. We cannot be too harsh

  393. on Job's wife

  394. because all of the

  395. suffering that Job

  396. went through in chapter 1,

  397. the exact same

  398. has happened to her.

  399. And now in addition

  400. to all of that,

  401. losing her possessions,

  402. losing all 10

  403. of her children,

  404. she's looking at her husband

  405. who is a shadow

  406. of a man he used to be.

  407. So we can't be too harsh

  408. on her.

  409. And we actually

  410. don't know her intentions

  411. behind what she says.

  412. It could be that she thinks

  413. her husband is dying

  414. and out of love for him,

  415. she doesn't want him

  416. to suffer anymore.

  417. And so she says,

  418. just curse God

  419. and suffer some form

  420. of divine judgment

  421. and so it will all be over.

  422. It could be that she thinks

  423. Job is suffering

  424. because of some sin

  425. in his life

  426. and she thinks

  427. that he's under

  428. the judgment of God.

  429. And so she says,

  430. just curse God and die.

  431. Get it over and done with.

  432. Or it could be

  433. that she is angry.

  434. Angry at the amount

  435. of pain and suffering

  436. that is afflicting

  437. her husband.

  438. And in her anger,

  439. she says,

  440. why are you holding on

  441. to a God

  442. who seems to have

  443. forgotten you?

  444. Regardless

  445. of what's going on

  446. in her mind,

  447. her conclusion

  448. is the same.

  449. She is telling

  450. her husband

  451. to give up on God.

  452. And do you see

  453. how that is not

  454. a good or a right

  455. response when we

  456. face suffering?

  457. Job and his wife

  458. have not seen

  459. the heavenly courtroom

  460. which has brought

  461. about all this suffering.

  462. They aren't aware

  463. that all of this

  464. is a test

  465. to prove the genuineness

  466. of Job's faith.

  467. And Job's wife

  468. doesn't see

  469. that all of this

  470. suffering is under

  471. the control

  472. of a sovereign

  473. good God

  474. who promises

  475. to preserve

  476. Job's life.

  477. Job's wife

  478. is acting

  479. a bit like

  480. a second Eve.

  481. Tempting

  482. her husband

  483. to sin.

  484. Tempting him

  485. to curse

  486. the very one

  487. who has given

  488. them both breath.

  489. To curse

  490. the one

  491. who has blessed

  492. them abundantly

  493. in their lives.

  494. She's tempting

  495. her husband

  496. to fall

  497. into Satan's

  498. hand

  499. and do exactly

  500. what Satan

  501. wants Job to do.

  502. Now regardless

  503. of her intentions

  504. she is acting

  505. as a mouthpiece

  506. for Satan.

  507. Job's wife

  508. is tempting

  509. him to go

  510. against the God

  511. he loves

  512. and the God

  513. that loves him.

  514. And this is

  515. especially hard

  516. because family

  517. are supposed

  518. to stick

  519. by you

  520. in your

  521. moments of

  522. suffering.

  523. I could not

  524. go one day

  525. without the

  526. support that

  527. Sabina and

  528. my family

  529. give me.

  530. Many of you

  531. have been

  532. that pillar

  533. of support

  534. for others.

  535. For a spouse

  536. for a parent

  537. for a partner

  538. for a friend

  539. it is challenging

  540. to see a loved

  541. one suffer

  542. isn't it?

  543. Because that

  544. in and of

  545. itself

  546. is suffering.

  547. Seeing a loved

  548. one suffer

  549. but it's hard

  550. because you're

  551. supporting them

  552. at the same

  553. time.

  554. Job's wife

  555. doesn't see

  556. the whole picture

  557. and friends

  558. we often won't

  559. see the big

  560. picture of

  561. what's going

  562. on.

  563. We probably

  564. won't know

  565. the reasons

  566. behind our

  567. suffering

  568. but remember

  569. that Job

  570. is here to

  571. teach us

  572. how to

  573. suffer well

  574. for the

  575. glory of

  576. God.

  577. In our

  578. suffering we

  579. should not

  580. curse God

  581. but we should

  582. make our

  583. suffering push

  584. us into

  585. his loving

  586. arms with

  587. all of our

  588. questions

  589. with all of

  590. our tears

  591. and with that

  592. same resilience

  593. and faith

  594. that Job

  595. has that

  596. enables him

  597. to say

  598. even in

  599. the darkest

  600. valley of

  601. despair

  602. that the

  603. Lord gives

  604. and the

  605. Lord takes

  606. away.

  607. Blessed be

  608. the name

  609. of the

  610. Lord.

  611. We're

  612. supposed to

  613. look at

  614. Job's wife

  615. and learn

  616. not to do

  617. what she

  618. does.

  619. If you're

  620. a spouse

  621. a parent

  622. or whatever

  623. you also

  624. have a role

  625. of glorifying

  626. God as

  627. you see

  628. someone else

  629. suffering

  630. and you

  631. help them

  632. in that.

  633. It's hard

  634. to see a

  635. loved one

  636. suffer

  637. but as

  638. the

  639. caregiver

  640. and supporter

  641. you must

  642. maintain your

  643. faith and

  644. encourage them

  645. in their

  646. suffering to

  647. do the

  648. same.

  649. Whether we're

  650. the one

  651. suffering or

  652. we're supporting

  653. the sufferer

  654. we all

  655. have a role

  656. to glorify

  657. God in

  658. it.

  659. Cursing

  660. God should

  661. never be an

  662. option for

  663. us because

  664. we don't

  665. know what's

  666. going on.

  667. God never

  668. gives up on

  669. his people so

  670. why should

  671. we give up

  672. on him?

  673. God never

  674. can't

  675. so this is

  676. the first

  677. response the

  678. bad response

  679. of a

  680. suffering

  681. spouse.

  682. And then in

  683. verse 10 we

  684. get our

  685. second response

  686. and it's a

  687. good one.

  688. It's the

  689. response of a

  690. faithful

  691. suffering

  692. servant.

  693. Read verse

  694. 10 with me.

  695. This is Job

  696. responding to

  697. his wife and

  698. he says

  699. you are

  700. talking like

  701. a foolish

  702. woman.

  703. Shall we

  704. accept good

  705. from God

  706. and not

  707. trouble?

  708. And in

  709. all of this

  710. Job did

  711. not sin

  712. in what

  713. he said.

  714. Now Job

  715. is not

  716. calling his

  717. wife stupid.

  718. We need

  719. to be clear

  720. on that.

  721. And we

  722. need to

  723. remember that

  724. this is part

  725. of wisdom

  726. literature.

  727. And in

  728. wisdom

  729. literature the

  730. wise person

  731. is one who

  732. is faithful

  733. and lives

  734. according to

  735. God's word

  736. and the

  737. foolish person

  738. who is the

  739. person who

  740. is not

  741. faithful to

  742. the Lord

  743. and who

  744. lives in

  745. religious

  746. ignorance.

  747. An example

  748. of this is

  749. Psalm 14

    Psalms 14:1

  750. verse 1

  751. where it

  752. says the

  753. fool says

  754. in his

  755. heart there

  756. is no

  757. God.

  758. So Job

  759. isn't talking

  760. about his

  761. wife's

  762. intellect but

  763. about her

  764. encouragement for

  765. Job to

  766. abandon his

  767. faith in

  768. God.

  769. And then we

  770. get another

  771. amazing statement

  772. from a man

  773. who is literally

  774. sitting in

  775. ash in the

  776. midst of

  777. suffering.

  778. He says

  779. shall we

  780. accept good

  781. from God

  782. and not

  783. trouble?

  784. Job's

  785. heart and

  786. mind are

  787. fixed on

  788. God.

  789. Job

  790. recognizes that

  791. all the

  792. good he has

  793. received in

  794. life is from

  795. God and so

  796. he trusts

  797. that this

  798. same God

  799. who is

  800. trustworthy

  801. and knows

  802. best even

  803. when harmful

  804. things come

  805. his way.

  806. Job knows

  807. that God

  808. doesn't owe

  809. him anything.

  810. God isn't

  811. a blessing

  812. dispenser who

  813. messes up

  814. when things

  815. go wrong.

  816. Job doesn't

  817. understand why

  818. he is suffering

  819. and he never

  820. finds out the

  821. reason behind

  822. it but he

  823. finds comfort

  824. in the character

  825. of the Lord

  826. who is afflicting

  827. him.

  828. Now that

  829. is not an

  830. easy place

  831. to get to

  832. when you're

  833. suffering but

  834. it is a

  835. place that

  836. we should

  837. all be

  838. striving

  839. towards.

  840. Horatio

  841. Spafford

  842. was a

  843. man who

  844. sent his

  845. wife and

  846. four children

  847. on a

  848. boat from

  849. the States

  850. to England

  851. in 1873

  852. and on

  853. route the

  854. boat collided

  855. with another

  856. ship and

  857. 200 people

  858. on board

  859. drowned

  860. including all

  861. of Horatio's

  862. children.

  863. When his

  864. wife got to

  865. England she

  866. sent a

  867. telegram which

  868. read saved

  869. alone.

  870. And Horatio

  871. jumped on

  872. the next

  873. boat to

  874. England and

  875. it stopped

  876. where the

  877. tragic accident

  878. took place.

  879. And in

  880. that moment

  881. Spafford

  882. penned

  883. these

  884. wonderful

  885. words.

  886. When

  887. peace

  888. like a

  889. river

  890. attendeth

  891. my way

  892. when

  893. sorrows

  894. like sea

  895. billows

  896. roll

  897. whatever

  898. my lot

  899. thou

  900. hast

  901. taught me

  902. to say

  903. it is

  904. well

  905. it is

  906. well

  907. with my

  908. soul.

  909. Friends we

  910. cannot only

  911. accept

  912. good gifts

  913. from God

  914. and even

  915. when

  916. suffering

  917. does come

  918. our way

  919. we must

  920. rely on

  921. God's

  922. good

  923. character

  924. on God's

  925. faithfulness

  926. on his

  927. holiness

  928. and trust

  929. that he

  930. can use

  931. even the

  932. most horrific

  933. situations

  934. for his

  935. glory

  936. because his

  937. glory

  938. is far

  939. more

  940. important

  941. than our

  942. comfort

  943. and than

  944. our

  945. health.

  946. Charles Spurgeon

  947. a London

  948. minister from

  949. years ago

  950. who suffered

  951. depression for

  952. a long time

  953. and who went

  954. through a

  955. tremendous amount

  956. of suffering

  957. in his life

  958. puts it like

  959. this

  960. I have

  961. learned to

  962. kiss the

  963. waves

  964. that throw

  965. me up

  966. against

  967. the rock

  968. of ages.

  969. Brothers and

  970. sisters

  971. when you

  972. suffer

  973. let it be

  974. a wave

  975. that throws

  976. you against

  977. the Lord.

  978. Let it

  979. push you

  980. to God

  981. because there

  982. is no

  983. better place

  984. for you

  985. to rest.

  986. There is

  987. no better

  988. place for

  989. you to

  990. cry.

  991. there is

  992. no better

  993. place for

  994. you to

  995. suffer pain

  996. than in

  997. the hands

  998. of a

  999. good God

  1000. who can

  1001. work all

  1002. things for

  1003. your good

  1004. even when

  1005. it doesn't

  1006. feel like

  1007. it.

  1008. So that's

  1009. the response

  1010. of a

  1011. faithful

  1012. suffering

  1013. servant

  1014. resilient

  1015. faith

  1016. even in

  1017. the face

  1018. of devastating

  1019. suffering.

  1020. And the

  1021. final response

  1022. and the

  1023. second good

  1024. one is

  1025. comforting

  1026. silence.

  1027. In verses

  1028. 11 to

  1029. 13.

  1030. Job's

  1031. three friends

  1032. hear about

  1033. the devastation

  1034. that has

  1035. come upon

  1036. him and

  1037. in verse

  1038. 11 says

  1039. they make

  1040. an appointment

  1041. to go

  1042. together

  1043. to sympathize

  1044. with him

  1045. and comfort

  1046. Job in

  1047. his suffering.

  1048. Now at

  1049. this point

  1050. Job has

  1051. been sitting

  1052. on the

  1053. ash pile

  1054. for a

  1055. few months.

  1056. He says

  1057. that in

  1058. Job chapter

    Job 7:3

  1059. 7 verse

  1060. 3.

  1061. So Job

  1062. has been

  1063. isolated

  1064. in agony

  1065. sitting in

  1066. pain and

  1067. suffering for

  1068. months when

  1069. they show

  1070. up.

  1071. And when

  1072. they arrive

  1073. they see him

  1074. from a

  1075. distance and

  1076. they can't

  1077. recognize him.

  1078. His appearance

  1079. is so marred

  1080. by the tragedies

  1081. that he isn't

  1082. recognizable.

  1083. His suffering

  1084. has taken

  1085. such a toll

  1086. on him that

  1087. he is not

  1088. the same

  1089. man they

  1090. once knew.

  1091. his appearance

  1092. is so

  1093. changed that

  1094. when they

  1095. see him

  1096. verse 12

  1097. says this

  1098. they began

  1099. to weep

  1100. aloud and

  1101. they tore

  1102. their robes

  1103. and sprinkled

  1104. dust on

  1105. their heads.

  1106. They're

  1107. responding as

  1108. if Job

  1109. has died

  1110. because of

  1111. the suffering

  1112. he's in.

  1113. They look

  1114. at their

  1115. friends sitting

  1116. in the ashes

  1117. and they

  1118. cannot help

  1119. but weep

  1120. with him

  1121. and mourn.

  1122. But do you

  1123. notice they

  1124. don't do it

  1125. from a

  1126. distance?

  1127. Verse 13

  1128. Then they

  1129. sat on the

  1130. ground with

  1131. him for

  1132. seven days

  1133. and seven

  1134. nights.

  1135. No one

  1136. said a

  1137. word to

  1138. him because

  1139. they saw

  1140. how great

  1141. his suffering

  1142. was.

  1143. Today this

  1144. is what

  1145. Christian

  1146. community

  1147. should look

  1148. like.

  1149. Romans 15

  1150. gives us

  1151. the example

  1152. of the church

  1153. being a place

  1154. where you

  1155. rejoice with

  1156. those who

  1157. rejoice and

  1158. will you

  1159. mourn with

  1160. those who

  1161. mourn?

  1162. Like the

  1163. friends mourn

  1164. when they

  1165. see Job

  1166. as a

  1167. church we

  1168. share in

  1169. each other's

  1170. sufferings

  1171. because it

  1172. is hard to

  1173. see another

  1174. member of

  1175. our local

  1176. body in

  1177. pain.

  1178. This is

  1179. what the

  1180. local church

  1181. should look

  1182. like.

  1183. Brothers

  1184. and sisters

  1185. sitting

  1186. alongside

  1187. each other

  1188. in the

  1189. ashes and

  1190. crying.

  1191. When

  1192. someone

  1193. goes

  1194. through

  1195. that

  1196. amount

  1197. of

  1198. suffering

  1199. sure

  1200. dropping

  1201. them a

  1202. text

  1203. would be

  1204. nice.

  1205. Giving

  1206. them a

  1207. call

  1208. might be

  1209. a little

  1210. bit of

  1211. help for

  1212. a while.

  1213. Dropping

  1214. around a

  1215. meal is

  1216. good and

  1217. a practical

  1218. thing to

  1219. do but

  1220. what will

  1221. really help

  1222. someone in

  1223. their suffering

  1224. is having a

  1225. church family

  1226. and friends

  1227. who will drop

  1228. everything and

  1229. run to the

  1230. person in

  1231. need and

  1232. sit with

  1233. them out of

  1234. a genuine

  1235. love for

  1236. them and

  1237. be silent.

  1238. Because a

  1239. person who

  1240. is suffering

  1241. most they

  1242. need the

  1243. presence of

  1244. faithful

  1245. friends.

  1246. Words

  1247. won't help

  1248. at first.

  1249. Out of

  1250. context Bible

  1251. verses will

  1252. not help but

  1253. getting on your

  1254. hands and knees

  1255. and sitting in

  1256. the dirt and

  1257. in the ashes

  1258. with a brother

  1259. or sister in

  1260. Christ and

  1261. weeping with

  1262. them.

  1263. That is

  1264. true comfort

  1265. that goes

  1266. beyond words.

  1267. Being present

  1268. with those who

  1269. suffer is far

  1270. more precious

  1271. than any

  1272. worldly wisdom.

  1273. Sitting silently

  1274. with someone

  1275. who suffers

  1276. is a powerful

  1277. witness of

  1278. your love

  1279. for them.

  1280. Now Job's

  1281. friends mess

  1282. up as the

  1283. book develops

  1284. but I think

  1285. they get it

  1286. 100% right

  1287. here.

  1288. They sit

  1289. with Job.

  1290. They don't

  1291. pretend to

  1292. know what's

  1293. happening.

  1294. They don't

  1295. try to

  1296. justify the

  1297. suffering but

  1298. they are

  1299. just silent.

  1300. Friends this

  1301. is what it

  1302. looks like to

  1303. have perspective

  1304. in suffering.

  1305. To know

  1306. that even in

  1307. the midst of

  1308. our darkest

  1309. valleys the

  1310. Lord is

  1311. good and

  1312. trustworthy.

  1313. Job was a

  1314. righteous man

  1315. who suffered

  1316. not for any

  1317. sin that he

  1318. had committed

  1319. but he is a

  1320. foreshadow of

  1321. the righteous

  1322. man who

  1323. suffered not

  1324. for any

  1325. sin that he

  1326. committed but

  1327. Jesus Christ

  1328. who suffered

  1329. for your

  1330. sin and

  1331. for mine.

  1332. Job's

  1333. appearance was

  1334. so marred by

  1335. the pain and

  1336. agony that he

  1337. went through in

  1338. absolute isolation.

  1339. Jesus was

  1340. beaten,

  1341. mocked,

  1342. whipped,

  1343. his flesh was

  1344. torn, a crown

  1345. of thorns was

  1346. pushed on his

  1347. head and Isaiah

  1348. says that his

  1349. appearance was so

  1350. disfigured beyond

  1351. that of any

  1352. human being

  1353. and his form

  1354. marred beyond

  1355. any human

  1356. likeness and

  1357. he was nailed

  1358. to a cruel

  1359. cross where

  1360. he would die

  1361. alone as his

  1362. followers ran

  1363. away in fear.

  1364. Friends it is

  1365. that man,

  1366. the truly

  1367. righteous one,

  1368. the perfect

  1369. suffering servant

  1370. who went

  1371. through agony

  1372. and isolation

  1373. so that his

  1374. people, so

  1375. that the

  1376. Lord's people

  1377. could be saved

  1378. from the

  1379. ultimate

  1380. eternal

  1381. suffering

  1382. of eternal

  1383. life in hell

  1384. under the

  1385. judgment in

  1386. God because

  1387. they have

  1388. cursed God

  1389. in their

  1390. hearts.

  1391. Job's

  1392. suffering

  1393. teaches us

  1394. how to

  1395. suffer well

  1396. for the

  1397. glory of

  1398. God.

  1399. Jesus'

  1400. suffering is

  1401. the moment

  1402. that God

  1403. himself took

  1404. on immense

  1405. suffering in

  1406. our place

  1407. and it is

  1408. Jesus, the

  1409. perfect suffering

  1410. servant who

  1411. draws near in

  1412. those times of

  1413. personal suffering

  1414. and he says

  1415. I know

  1416. I'm here.

  1417. Finish the

  1418. race well and

  1419. live for those

  1420. words that

  1421. will give you

  1422. life.

  1423. Well done

  1424. good and

  1425. faithful servant.

  1426. That's the

  1427. perspective we

  1428. need in our

  1429. suffering.

  1430. Joni Erickson

  1431. has been

  1432. bound to a

  1433. wheelchair for

  1434. over 50

  1435. years.

  1436. She travels

  1437. the world

  1438. encouraging people

  1439. in the midst

  1440. of their

  1441. suffering not

  1442. by giving

  1443. them half

  1444. baked truths

  1445. or theological

  1446. sound bites

  1447. but she

  1448. sits with

  1449. them.

  1450. She listens

  1451. and she

  1452. tells people

  1453. of the

  1454. great God

  1455. who even

  1456. in the midst

  1457. of turmoil

  1458. can bring

  1459. hope beyond

  1460. words.

  1461. Joni has

  1462. learned that

  1463. sometimes God

  1464. allows what he

  1465. hates to

  1466. happen to

  1467. bring forth

  1468. in us

  1469. Christ the

  1470. hope of

  1471. glory.

  1472. Job got

  1473. through his

  1474. suffering

  1475. because he

  1476. knew who

  1477. God was

  1478. and friends

  1479. that's how you

  1480. get through

  1481. suffering today.

  1482. That's the

  1483. perspective you

  1484. need to see

  1485. our suffering

  1486. in light of

  1487. eternity and

  1488. in light of

  1489. the good God

  1490. that we

  1491. serve who

  1492. sent his

  1493. son so

  1494. that we

  1495. could be

  1496. spared the

  1497. ultimate

  1498. suffering of

  1499. separation

  1500. from God.

  1501. Let's pray

  1502. together.

  1503. Amen.

  1504. Amen.

  1505. Amen.

  1506. Father I

  1507. don't know

  1508. everyone in

  1509. this room

  1510. or everyone

  1511. watching this

  1512. and what is

  1513. going on in

  1514. their lives.

  1515. I don't know

  1516. the suffering

  1517. they are going

  1518. through but

  1519. you do.

  1520. Father would

  1521. you give

  1522. them the

  1523. perspective

  1524. that they

  1525. need to

  1526. not turn

  1527. their back

  1528. on you

  1529. but would

  1530. you help

  1531. them run

  1532. to you in

  1533. their pain

  1534. and cling

  1535. to you for

  1536. their dear

  1537. lives.

  1538. Father would

  1539. you help

  1540. us all

  1541. as we

  1542. help those

  1543. who suffer

  1544. not be

  1545. the voice

  1546. of temptation

  1547. that says

  1548. curse God

  1549. but be the

  1550. voice of

  1551. encouragement

  1552. that points

  1553. people to

  1554. Christ

  1555. to the

  1556. hope of

  1557. eternity

  1558. with you

  1559. and to

  1560. the wonderful

  1561. promise of

  1562. the Lord's

  1563. presence in

  1564. our everyday.

  1565. Help us

  1566. suffer well

  1567. for your

  1568. glory.

  1569. In Jesus

  1570. name we

  1571. pray.

  1572. Amen.
