  1. I don't know how many of you still have a landline phone in your house.

  2. A few years ago, it would have been a really strange thing for someone not to,

  3. but now it's not quite so common.

  4. I have one that is rarely used.

  5. When it rings, I know there are two possibilities.

  6. One, that it's my mum.

  7. Or two, that it's someone trying to sell me something.

  8. But many of those calls are questionable.

  9. They make a claim about who they are.

  10. They say that they are from HMRC, from Microsoft, from my bank, without naming it.

  11. They tell me about the problems that apparently I'm having with my broadband,

  12. about the warranties about to expire on my 20-year-old fridge,

  13. or about the fraudulent activity on my account.

  14. But it only takes a few seconds of hearing them talk,

  15. to know that they are not who they claim to be.

  16. Who they say they are, and what they say does not match up.

  17. As we look at tonight's passage, we'll see that James presents a question

  18. about how to recognise genuine saving faith.

  19. Then he gives four illustrations to try and help us understand the issues,

  20. and ultimately to demonstrate the fundamental misunderstanding behind the original question.

  21. So for those of you who like headings, we'll first be looking at a fundamental question in verse 14.

  22. And then we'll look at the four illustrations.

  23. The futility of meaningless words in verses 15 and 16.

  24. The faith of demons in verses 18 and 19.

  25. The faith of Abraham in verses 20 to 24.

  26. And the faith of Rahab in verse 25.

  27. And finally we'll conclude with James' two summary statements,

  28. verses 17 and 26.

  29. Which I guess if you want more alliteration you could call a frank answer.

  30. And so let's start off with that fundamental question.

  31. In verse 14.

  32. What good is it, my brothers and sisters,

  33. if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?

  34. Can such faith save them?

  35. This question is what this passage is all about.

  36. And it's an important question.

  37. But for many of you, this question will already be setting off a klaxon in your heads.

  38. For some it will be a theological klaxon.

  39. Are you questioning salvation by faith alone?

  40. Surely this goes against everything we believe.

  41. Everything that Paul teaches us.

  42. Everything the great reformers stood for.

  43. But for others it will be a more personal klaxon.

  44. Are you questioning my salvation?

  45. Are you questioning if I'm really saved?

  46. But this is the question that's central to the whole argument

  47. of James' letter.

  48. Because it's a letter filled with instruction to action.

  49. To do this and not to do that.

  50. It talks a lot about how we speak.

  51. About how we treat others.

  52. And it's full of warnings against hypocrisy.

  53. Against saying one thing

  54. and living in a completely different way.

  55. Back in chapter 1 verse 22 we read the warning

  56. Do not merely listen to the word

  57. and deceive yourselves.

  58. Do what it says.

  59. And we see that this passage continues with that theme.

  60. This letter is primarily written to an audience

  61. that have probably come to Christianity

  62. from a Jewish background.

  63. They have grown up with the Pharisees

  64. teaching them on all the many rules

  65. that they must follow to be right with God.

  66. And then they have heard

  67. this message of salvation

  68. by grace

  69. through the finished work of Christ.

  70. And it seems that they may have thought

  71. great.

  72. That's me off the hook.

  73. I can now just sit back and relax.

  74. I can do whatever I want.

  75. I don't need to worry about those sacrifices and rituals.

  76. I also don't need to worry about

  77. helping the poor

  78. or loving my neighbour either.

  79. And James wants to make it crystal clear

  80. that that is not the gospel.

  81. And so we come

  82. in verses 15 and 16

  83. to the first of these four illustrations

  84. the futility

  85. of meaningless words

  86. where James writes

  87. suppose

  88. a brother or sister

  89. is without clothes

  90. and daily food

  91. if one of you says to them

  92. go in peace

  93. keep warm

  94. and well fed

  95. but

  96. does nothing

  97. about their physical needs

  98. what good is it?

  99. While throughout the letter

  100. James frequently

  101. refers to the care of the poor

  102. I don't think

  103. that is actually

  104. primarily

  105. what his focus

  106. in these verses

  107. is about.

  108. Instead

  109. this scenario

  110. is given

  111. to illustrate

  112. the futility

  113. of meaningless words

  114. how it's possible

  115. to say things

  116. that sound great

  117. but have nothing more

  118. behind them

  119. than vague sentiment.

  120. what good is it

  121. to tell the person

  122. you need

  123. to be warm

  124. and well fed

  125. and then

  126. do nothing to help

  127. despite the fact

  128. that you could?

  129. It's pointless.

  130. It is just

  131. meaningless words.

  132. You would have been better

  133. saying nothing.

  134. And I think

  135. this is key

  136. to understanding

  137. that question

  138. at the heart

  139. of the passage

  140. because James

  141. asks

  142. what good is it

  143. if someone

  144. claims

  145. to have faith?

  146. If someone

  147. makes a claim

  148. to have faith

  149. but it goes

  150. no further

  151. than mere words

  152. then it's pointless.

  153. It's just

  154. meaningless words.

  155. They say

  156. that they are

  157. a Christian

  158. but there is

  159. no evidence

  160. of the reality

  161. of it.

  162. They may

  163. have confessed

  164. with their mouth

  165. but they have

  166. not believed

  167. in their heart.

  168. It means

  169. nothing

  170. to them.

  171. I think

  172. probably

  173. this is most

  174. likely

  175. to happen

  176. in cultures

  177. where

  178. some form

  179. of Christianity

  180. is expected

  181. of you.

  182. At one point

  183. that would have

  184. been the case

  185. here.

  186. It still is

  187. the case

  188. in some parts

  189. of the USA

  190. where not

  191. being a Christian

  192. is seen

  193. as a hindrance

  194. in society.

  195. We saw

  196. in Acts

  197. recently

  198. how at first

  199. many people

  200. wanted to be

  201. associated

  202. with the early

  203. church

  204. until things

  205. started getting

  206. serious

  207. and then

  208. they began

  209. to keep

  210. their distance.

  211. Then the only

  212. people that

  213. chose to associate

  214. with them

  215. in the temple

  216. courts

  217. were those

  218. who had made

  219. the decision

  220. to follow

  221. Christ

  222. and to become

  223. one of them.

  224. In our society

  225. in 21st century

  226. Edinburgh

  227. there is

  228. nothing

  229. really to be

  230. gained

  231. by claiming

  232. to be a Christian.

  233. In fact

  234. it may well

  235. be a hindrance.

  236. In some

  237. countries

  238. it would be

  239. a literal

  240. death sentence.

  241. But I think

  242. we have to be

  243. careful.

  244. while there

  245. may be

  246. no pressure

  247. in our

  248. culture

  249. at large

  250. we all

  251. live within

  252. our own

  253. microcultures

  254. our own

  255. bubbles of

  256. people that

  257. we associate

  258. with.

  259. And in our

  260. social circles

  261. it might be

  262. the done thing

  263. to say that

  264. you're a Christian.

  265. In particular

  266. the children

  267. in our church

  268. grow up

  269. in a culture

  270. where being

  271. a Christian

  272. is the

  273. norm.

  274. We need

  275. to be careful

  276. that we

  277. don't encourage

  278. them to say

  279. all the right

  280. things just

  281. to make us

  282. happy without

  283. it going any

  284. further than

  285. being mere

  286. words.

  287. I remember

  288. one of the

  289. guys I grew

  290. up with in

  291. church

  292. recounted how

  293. one of the

  294. old ladies

  295. in the church

  296. would encourage

  297. him to get

  298. baptised.

  299. it was

  300. completely

  301. well-meaning

  302. but what

  303. she didn't

  304. realise was

  305. that he

  306. wasn't a

  307. Christian at

  308. the time.

  309. He only

  310. came to

  311. church

  312. under

  313. duress

  314. because his

  315. parents forced

  316. him to.

  317. He later

  318. came to a

  319. real saving

  320. faith

  321. but until

  322. then

  323. it would

  324. have been

  325. easy for

  326. him to

  327. say and

  328. do all

  329. the right

  330. things and

  331. to fit in

  332. but it

  333. would have

  334. been pointless.

  335. It would

  336. just be

  337. meaningless

  338. words and

  339. James makes

  340. it clear that

  341. meaningless words

  342. do not

  343. save.

  344. They are

  345. futile.

  346. And so we

  347. come on to

  348. our second

  349. illustration in

  350. verses 18 and

  351. 19 where we

  352. see the faith

  353. of demons.

  354. Here James

  355. challenges those

  356. who say that

  357. they have

  358. faith to

  359. show it.

  360. I think it's

  361. helpful here if

  362. we remember

  363. that there's

  364. nothing special

  365. about the

  366. word translated

  367. here as

  368. works,

  369. deeds or

  370. acts.

  371. This is not

  372. some deep

  373. theological term

  374. with huge

  375. amounts of

  376. theological

  377. baggage.

  378. It's just a

  379. normal everyday

  380. word which

  381. means what it

  382. says.

  383. Things that

  384. people do.

  385. And so James

  386. challenges them

  387. to show their

  388. faith without

  389. doing anything.

  390. And he will

  391. show his

  392. faith by what

  393. he does.

  394. The faith that

  395. they claim to

  396. have cannot be

  397. seen.

  398. But their

  399. actions can.

  400. And how they

  401. live betrays the

  402. reality beneath

  403. the surface.

  404. then we see

  405. that James

  406. anticipates their

  407. response.

  408. Their response

  409. but I

  410. believe.

  411. Surely,

  412. surely that's

  413. all that

  414. matters.

  415. And he

  416. comes back

  417. with a

  418. stinging

  419. retort.

  420. You believe

  421. that there is

  422. one God?

  423. Good.

  424. Even the

  425. demons believe

  426. that.

  427. Well done.

  428. Your faith

  429. is as good

  430. as the

  431. demons.

  432. We're told

  433. very little

  434. about demons

  435. but we can

  436. expect that

  437. they have a

  438. far greater

  439. knowledge of

  440. spiritual realities

  441. than we do.

  442. And they

  443. hate it.

  444. As James

  445. says, they

  446. believe and

  447. they shudder.

  448. I think this

  449. is a very

  450. important distinction

  451. that has to be

  452. made.

  453. And we're

  454. perhaps not

  455. always very

  456. good at

  457. expressing it.

  458. believing in

  459. God is

  460. not what

  461. matters.

  462. Trusting

  463. him is.

  464. It's not a

  465. matter of

  466. intellectual

  467. assent to

  468. an idea

  469. like believing

  470. in extraterrestrial

  471. life or

  472. something like

  473. that.

  474. Rather,

  475. it's about

  476. trusting in

  477. that God

  478. and relying

  479. on his

  480. goodness

  481. and in

  482. particular

  483. his mercy

  484. shown to

  485. us through

  486. the death

  487. and resurrection

  488. of Christ.

  489. Recently, we

  490. had a talk

  491. from Ash

  492. Cunningham

  493. on atheism.

  494. And he

  495. told a story

  496. of someone

  497. that he had

  498. met at a

  499. student outreach

  500. who at the

  501. beginning of the

  502. week was an

  503. atheist.

  504. It only took

  505. him until

  506. Tuesday to

  507. be convinced

  508. that there was

  509. a God

  510. God and

  511. even to be

  512. convinced

  513. that the

  514. biblical

  515. claims about

  516. God were

  517. true.

  518. It took

  519. him the

  520. rest of the

  521. week to

  522. decide that

  523. this God

  524. was good

  525. and that he

  526. wanted to

  527. trust him.

  528. To quote

  529. Ash, he

  530. said,

  531. his atheism

  532. was not built

  533. primarily on

  534. the idea that

  535. God could not

  536. exist.

  537. It was built

  538. on the

  539. supposition that

  540. God was not

  541. worth following.

  542. And James

  543. wants his

  544. readers to

  545. know that

  546. they have

  547. to make

  548. that step.

  549. They have

  550. to move

  551. from believing

  552. truth about

  553. God to

  554. trusting in

  555. him,

  556. acknowledging

  557. his goodness

  558. and acknowledging

  559. their need

  560. for him.

  561. And so

  562. then we

  563. come in

  564. verses 20

  565. to 24 to

  566. the third

  567. illustration where

  568. we see the

  569. faith of

  570. Abraham.

  571. James

  572. writes,

  573. you foolish

  574. person,

  575. do you

  576. want evidence

  577. that faith

  578. without deeds

  579. is useless?

  580. Was not

  581. our father

  582. Abraham

  583. considered

  584. righteous for

  585. what he did

  586. when he offered

  587. his son Isaac

  588. on the altar?

  589. You see

  590. that his faith

  591. and his actions

  592. were working

  593. together and

  594. his faith was

  595. made complete

  596. by what he

  597. did.

  598. And the

  599. scripture was

  600. fulfilled that

  601. says,

  602. Abraham

  603. believed God

  604. and it was

  605. credited to

  606. him as

  607. righteousness

  608. and he was

  609. called God's

  610. friend.

  611. You see that

  612. a person is

  613. considered

  614. righteous by

  615. what they do

  616. and not by

  617. faith alone.

  618. God

  619. said,

  620. this illustration

  621. at first

  622. seems the

  623. most problematic

  624. part of the

  625. passage,

  626. but actually

  627. it's the

  628. most helpful,

  629. particularly

  630. because there

  631. are several

  632. other passages

  633. that deal

  634. with the

  635. exact same

  636. events.

  637. Because in

  638. particular,

  639. Paul writes

  640. about Abraham's

  641. faith in

  642. Romans 4,

  643. where he

  644. says,

  645. what shall

  646. we say

  647. that Abraham,

  648. our forefather

  649. according to

  650. the flesh,

  651. discovered in

  652. this matter?

  653. If in fact

  654. Abraham was

  655. justified by

  656. works,

  657. he had

  658. something to

  659. boast about,

  660. but not

  661. before God.

  662. What does

  663. scripture say?

  664. Abraham

  665. believed God

  666. and it was

  667. credited to

  668. him as

  669. righteousness.

  670. Now to the

  671. one who

  672. works,

  673. wages are

  674. not credited

  675. as a gift,

  676. but as an

  677. obligation.

  678. However,

  679. to the

  680. one who

  681. does not

  682. work,

  683. but trusts

  684. God who

  685. justifies the

  686. ungodly,

  687. their faith

  688. is credited

  689. as righteousness.

  690. Paul takes

  691. the exact

  692. same quote

  693. from Genesis,

  694. that Abraham

  695. believed God

  696. that was

  697. credited to

  698. him as

  699. righteousness,

  700. to show

  701. that Abraham

  702. was not

  703. made righteous

  704. because of

  705. his works,

  706. but that his

  707. righteousness

  708. was through

  709. his trust

  710. in the

  711. God who

  712. justifies

  713. the ungodly.

  714. Paul makes

  715. it explicitly

  716. clear in the

  717. surrounding

  718. chapters that

  719. living a

  720. good enough

  721. life is

  722. impossible,

  723. and also

  724. that no

  725. number of

  726. religious rituals

  727. of sacrifice,

  728. penance,

  729. or dedication

  730. could ever

  731. compensate for

  732. our failure.

  733. people.

  734. But Paul

  735. continues

  736. further down

  737. the chapter

  738. to say,

  739. the words

  740. I was

  741. credited to

  742. him were

  743. written not

  744. for him

  745. alone,

  746. but also

  747. for us,

  748. to whom

  749. God will

  750. credit

  751. righteousness,

  752. for us who

  753. believe in

  754. him who

  755. raised Jesus

  756. our Lord

  757. from the

  758. dead.

  759. He was

  760. delivered over

  761. to death

  762. for our

  763. sins,

  764. and was

  765. raised to

  766. life for

  767. our

  768. justification.

  769. faith is

  770. not some

  771. sort of

  772. vague,

  773. fuzzy,

  774. religious

  775. feeling,

  776. but is a

  777. life-changing

  778. belief in

  779. and reliance

  780. on the

  781. completed work

  782. of Jesus

  783. for our

  784. salvation

  785. through his

  786. death and

  787. resurrection.

  788. So what

  789. does James

  790. mean when

  791. he takes

  792. the same

  793. verse to

  794. show that

  795. faith without

  796. deeds is

  797. useless?

  798. I think

  799. the passage

  800. that was

  801. read to

  802. us in

  803. Hebrews

  804. 11 may

  805. help our

  806. understanding,

  807. because almost

  808. every sentence

  809. in it begins

  810. by faith.

  811. It is by

  812. faith that

  813. Abraham left

  814. his home.

  815. It is by

  816. faith he

  817. made his

  818. home in

  819. the promised

  820. land.

  821. It is by

  822. faith that

  823. he offered

  824. Isaac on

  825. the altar.

  826. All of

  827. these actions

  828. were a result

  829. of his

  830. faith.

  831. His actions

  832. demonstrated

  833. what he

  834. believed.

  835. His actions

  836. showed that

  837. his faith

  838. was real,

  839. that his

  840. trust in

  841. God was

  842. not just

  843. academic,

  844. but that it

  845. was what he

  846. was basing

  847. his life

  848. upon.

  849. Now,

  850. that does

  851. not mean

  852. that Abraham

  853. lived a

  854. perfect life.

  855. Far from

  856. it.

  857. That's the

  858. great thing

  859. about the

  860. Bible.

  861. It gives

  862. us a

  863. warts and

  864. all view

  865. of these

  866. heroes of

  867. the faith.

  868. We see

  869. that their

  870. lives are

  871. a mess.

  872. We see

  873. that at

  874. times they

  875. doubted

  876. God,

  877. that they

  878. thought that

  879. they knew

  880. better,

  881. but his

  882. life gives

  883. evidence that

  884. his faith

  885. is real.

  886. We see

  887. that James

  888. said that

  889. Abraham was

  890. considered

  891. righteous when

  892. he offered

  893. his son

  894. Isaac on

  895. the altar.

  896. In the

  897. context,

  898. it's clear

  899. that James

  900. is not saying

  901. he was

  902. made

  903. righteous

  904. before God

  905. by these

  906. actions,

  907. but that

  908. he was

  909. shown to

  910. be

  911. righteous.

  912. James makes

  913. it clear

  914. that his

  915. righteousness

  916. was credited

  917. to him

  918. when he

  919. believed.

  920. And if we

  921. look back at

  922. Genesis,

  923. where that

  924. quotation comes

  925. from,

  926. we see that

  927. there are

  928. decades between

  929. these events.

  930. That

  931. Abraham's

  932. actions when

  933. his faith

  934. was tested

  935. showed the

  936. reality of

  937. his faith

  938. that he

  939. has lived

  940. with over

  941. decades.

  942. But I

  943. think what

  944. James is

  945. saying is

  946. that if

  947. Abraham had

  948. believed

  949. God,

  950. went back

  951. in Haran,

  952. but had

  953. decided just

  954. to stay

  955. there because

  956. he was quite

  957. comfortable

  958. there.

  959. If Abraham

  960. had believed

  961. God and

  962. never acted

  963. on it,

  964. if nothing

  965. about his

  966. life had

  967. changed,

  968. he would

  969. have to

  970. start asking

  971. serious

  972. questions about

  973. the reality

  974. of Abraham's

  975. faith.

  976. And so it

  977. is with

  978. us.

  979. If we are

  980. striving to

  981. work our

  982. way to

  983. God by

  984. our good

  985. deeds,

  986. by going

  987. to church

  988. as often

  989. as we

  990. can,

  991. having

  992. non-stop

  993. worship

  994. music playing

  995. in our

  996. headphones,

  997. helping out

  998. with the

  999. food bank,

  1000. giving to

  1001. everyone we

  1002. can,

  1003. opening our

  1004. homes,

  1005. sharing

  1006. amazing

  1007. hospitality,

  1008. giving a

  1009. listening ear

  1010. and a

  1011. shoulder to

  1012. cry on,

  1013. and just

  1014. hoping that

  1015. it might

  1016. be enough,

  1017. we need to

  1018. give up now.

  1019. You can't.

  1020. It's a

  1021. hopeless task,

  1022. and it's not

  1023. what James is

  1024. teaching.

  1025. You need to

  1026. run to

  1027. Jesus.

  1028. You need to

  1029. run to him

  1030. with your

  1031. failure,

  1032. your inadequacy,

  1033. your guilt,

  1034. and then,

  1035. trusting in

  1036. him,

  1037. you can go

  1038. out and

  1039. act in his

  1040. strength.

  1041. by his

  1042. spirit,

  1043. and live a

  1044. life of

  1045. service,

  1046. out of

  1047. love and

  1048. gratitude,

  1049. instead of

  1050. out of

  1051. guilt and

  1052. fear.

  1053. But if

  1054. instead you're

  1055. thinking,

  1056. yeah,

  1057. I'm fine.

  1058. I said a

  1059. prayer at an

  1060. SU camp 20

  1061. years ago,

  1062. but,

  1063. you know,

  1064. since I

  1065. left that

  1066. camp all

  1067. those years

  1068. ago,

  1069. I've not

  1070. really given

  1071. another thought.

  1072. my faith

  1073. doesn't really

  1074. feature anywhere

  1075. in how I

  1076. live my

  1077. life.

  1078. Nothing

  1079. changed,

  1080. and to be

  1081. honest,

  1082. you're quite

  1083. happy that

  1084. way.

  1085. If that's

  1086. you,

  1087. then I

  1088. think that

  1089. is exactly

  1090. who James

  1091. is addressing.

  1092. And he's

  1093. saying that

  1094. the faith

  1095. you claim

  1096. to have

  1097. is useless.

  1098. If your

  1099. faith is

  1100. in no way

  1101. affecting your

  1102. actions,

  1103. then you

  1104. need to

  1105. really start

  1106. questioning

  1107. the reality

  1108. of your

  1109. faith.

  1110. And

  1111. likewise,

  1112. you need

  1113. to run

  1114. to Jesus.

  1115. You need

  1116. to run

  1117. to him

  1118. with your

  1119. hypocrisy,

  1120. your pride,

  1121. your laziness,

  1122. and your

  1123. fear.

  1124. You need

  1125. to ask him

  1126. to change

  1127. you from

  1128. within,

  1129. to give

  1130. you new

  1131. life,

  1132. to put his

  1133. spirit within

  1134. you,

  1135. and to

  1136. give you

  1137. the power

  1138. to live

  1139. for him.

  1140. But for

  1141. many of

  1142. us,

  1143. we will

  1144. know that

  1145. our faith

  1146. is real.

  1147. We know

  1148. that God

  1149. has really

  1150. moved in

  1151. our lives,

  1152. and that

  1153. we are not

  1154. the person

  1155. that we

  1156. once were,

  1157. and certainly

  1158. not the

  1159. person that

  1160. we were

  1161. headed to

  1162. become.

  1163. We know

  1164. his spirit

  1165. is at work

  1166. within us,

  1167. and yet

  1168. we see

  1169. so little

  1170. change.

  1171. We see

  1172. that our

  1173. actions

  1174. are barely

  1175. distinguishable

  1176. from those

  1177. around us.

  1178. We see

  1179. that we

  1180. have become

  1181. complacent,

  1182. that the

  1183. sins we

  1184. used to

  1185. struggle

  1186. with,

  1187. we no

  1188. longer

  1189. struggle

  1190. with,

  1191. not because

  1192. they're not

  1193. there any

  1194. longer,

  1195. but because

  1196. we've just

  1197. accepted them

  1198. as part of

  1199. our lives.

  1200. we know

  1201. that we

  1202. are walking

  1203. contradictions,

  1204. that what

  1205. we declare

  1206. on Sunday

  1207. and what

  1208. we live

  1209. on Monday

  1210. are far

  1211. too far

  1212. apart.

  1213. And

  1214. firstly,

  1215. we need

  1216. to have

  1217. confidence

  1218. in our

  1219. salvation.

  1220. We should

  1221. rest secure

  1222. in the

  1223. saving work

  1224. of Christ,

  1225. that he

  1226. who begun

  1227. a good

  1228. work in

  1229. us will

  1230. be faithful

  1231. to complete

  1232. it,

  1233. and that

  1234. no one

  1235. will snatch

  1236. us out of

  1237. his hand.

  1238. But we

  1239. too must

  1240. run to

  1241. Christ.

  1242. We must

  1243. repent of

  1244. our sin,

  1245. our apathy,

  1246. our hypocrisy,

  1247. and we

  1248. must ask

  1249. for his

  1250. strength

  1251. to live

  1252. for him

  1253. each day

  1254. as he

  1255. slowly

  1256. transforms

  1257. us into

  1258. his likeness.

  1259. We will

  1260. fail

  1261. again

  1262. and again,

  1263. but he

  1264. is faithful.

  1265. He will

  1266. pick us

  1267. up,

  1268. dust us

  1269. down,

  1270. set us

  1271. on our

  1272. feet again

  1273. and help

  1274. us take

  1275. one more

  1276. step.

  1277. And then

  1278. in the

  1279. final

  1280. illustration

  1281. in verse

  1282. 25,

  1283. we see

  1284. the faith

  1285. of Rahab.

  1286. James

  1287. writes,

  1288. in the

  1289. same way

  1290. was not

  1291. even

  1292. Rahab

  1293. the

  1294. prostitute

  1295. considered

  1296. righteous

  1297. for what

  1298. she did

  1299. when she

  1300. gave

  1301. lodging

  1302. to the

  1303. spies

  1304. and sent

  1305. them

  1306. off

  1307. in a

  1308. different

  1309. direction.

  1310. We have

  1311. lengthy

  1312. accounts

  1313. about

  1314. Abraham's

  1315. long

  1316. journey

  1317. of

  1318. faith,

  1319. but we

  1320. know very

  1321. little

  1322. about

  1323. Rahab.

  1324. We have

  1325. an account

  1326. of this

  1327. one event

  1328. in her

  1329. life in

  1330. the book

  1331. of Joshua.

  1332. Then she's

  1333. mentioned

  1334. briefly here

  1335. and in

  1336. Hebrews 11

  1337. and she

  1338. also

  1339. probably

  1340. gets a

  1341. name

  1342. call

  1343. in the

  1344. genealogy

  1345. in

  1346. Matthew's

  1347. Gospel.

  1348. Rahab

  1349. is a

  1350. prostitute

  1351. in the

  1352. city of

  1353. Jericho

  1354. when the

  1355. people of

  1356. Israel are

  1357. approaching

  1358. under the

  1359. leadership of

  1360. Joshua,

  1361. following their

  1362. years of

  1363. wandering

  1364. in the

  1365. wilderness.

  1366. And the

  1367. people of

  1368. Jericho

  1369. have heard

  1370. that they

  1371. are approaching.

  1372. As Rahab

  1373. explains,

  1374. I know

  1375. that the

  1376. Lord has

  1377. given you

  1378. this land

  1379. and a

  1380. great fear

  1381. of you

  1382. has fallen

  1383. on us

  1384. so that

  1385. all who

  1386. live in

  1387. this country

  1388. are melting

  1389. in fear

  1390. because of

  1391. you.

  1392. We have

  1393. heard how

  1394. the Lord

  1395. dried up

  1396. the water

  1397. of the

  1398. Red Sea

  1399. for you

  1400. when you

  1401. came out

  1402. of Egypt

  1403. and what

  1404. you did

  1405. to Sihon

  1406. and Og,

  1407. the two

  1408. kings of

  1409. the Amorites

  1410. east of

  1411. the Jordan,

  1412. whom you

  1413. completely

  1414. destroyed.

  1415. When we

  1416. heard of

  1417. it,

  1418. our hearts

  1419. melted in

  1420. fear and

  1421. everyone's

  1422. courage

  1423. failed because

  1424. of you.

  1425. For the

  1426. Lord,

  1427. your God,

  1428. is God

  1429. in heaven

  1430. above and

  1431. on the

  1432. earth below.

  1433. So we

  1434. see that the

  1435. people know

  1436. that the

  1437. Israelites are

  1438. approaching

  1439. and are

  1440. terrified.

  1441. They've

  1442. heard how

  1443. their neighbours

  1444. across the

  1445. Jordan,

  1446. the Amorites,

  1447. were unable

  1448. to stand up

  1449. against them.

  1450. But as

  1451. well as

  1452. what happened

  1453. recently,

  1454. they know

  1455. of what

  1456. happened

  1457. about 40

  1458. years ago

  1459. when the

  1460. Israelites

  1461. left Egypt.

  1462. But what's

  1463. really terrifying

  1464. them,

  1465. what's causing

  1466. them to melt

  1467. in fear,

  1468. is they've

  1469. also heard

  1470. that they're

  1471. coming with

  1472. the protection

  1473. of a powerful

  1474. God who's

  1475. working miracles

  1476. for them.

  1477. and it's

  1478. into this

  1479. context that

  1480. Joshua has

  1481. sent two

  1482. spies into

  1483. the city

  1484. to see the

  1485. lie of the

  1486. land and

  1487. they've sought

  1488. shelter in

  1489. Rahab's house.

  1490. In that

  1491. situation,

  1492. when the

  1493. authorities came

  1494. looking for

  1495. them,

  1496. she decided

  1497. to hide the

  1498. spies and

  1499. let them

  1500. later escape

  1501. in secret.

  1502. In return,

  1503. the spies

  1504. promised that

  1505. she and her

  1506. family would

  1507. be saved

  1508. when they

  1509. come and

  1510. destroy the

  1511. city.

  1512. She had the

  1513. exact same

  1514. evidence as

  1515. everyone else

  1516. in the city.

  1517. She even

  1518. had the same

  1519. belief that

  1520. their success

  1521. was because

  1522. the Lord,

  1523. their God,

  1524. was with them.

  1525. And based

  1526. on that

  1527. information,

  1528. based on what

  1529. she believed

  1530. she had a

  1531. choice to

  1532. make,

  1533. would she

  1534. stand with

  1535. her people

  1536. in defiance

  1537. of the

  1538. Lord and

  1539. put her

  1540. faith in

  1541. the strength

  1542. of their

  1543. walls and

  1544. their armies,

  1545. which would

  1546. be quite

  1547. reasonable.

  1548. It was one

  1549. of the

  1550. greatest

  1551. fortified

  1552. cities of

  1553. the time.

  1554. Or would

  1555. she put

  1556. her faith

  1557. in the

  1558. Lord?

  1559. Would she

  1560. acknowledge

  1561. him as

  1562. God in

  1563. heaven and

  1564. on earth

  1565. below and

  1566. side with

  1567. him?

  1568. and put

  1569. her life

  1570. into his

  1571. hands?

  1572. She was

  1573. putting her

  1574. life in

  1575. danger if

  1576. she had

  1577. been caught,

  1578. and yet

  1579. she saw

  1580. where real

  1581. security lay.

  1582. Faced with

  1583. that choice,

  1584. she had to

  1585. make a

  1586. decision about

  1587. whose side

  1588. was she

  1589. on.

  1590. And it

  1591. couldn't just

  1592. be an

  1593. academic

  1594. decision.

  1595. She had

  1596. to act

  1597. on it.

  1598. Whatever

  1599. she chose

  1600. would

  1601. determine

  1602. the

  1603. trajectory

  1604. of the

  1605. rest of

  1606. her life.

  1607. Faith

  1608. was not

  1609. to believe

  1610. that the

  1611. Israelites

  1612. were coming

  1613. with the

  1614. power of

  1615. God behind

  1616. them.

  1617. Faith

  1618. was not

  1619. even to

  1620. believe that

  1621. on balance,

  1622. all things

  1623. considered,

  1624. she would

  1625. be better

  1626. off siding

  1627. with the

  1628. Lord instead

  1629. of against

  1630. him.

  1631. Faith was

  1632. to step

  1633. out and

  1634. make that

  1635. decision

  1636. reality.

  1637. She

  1638. couldn't

  1639. do

  1640. nothing.

  1641. That

  1642. wasn't

  1643. an

  1644. option.

  1645. She

  1646. couldn't

  1647. remain

  1648. passive.

  1649. Either

  1650. she would

  1651. hide the

  1652. spies or

  1653. she would

  1654. hand them

  1655. over.

  1656. Either she

  1657. would trust

  1658. God or

  1659. she would

  1660. trust the

  1661. armies of

  1662. Jericho.

  1663. And like

  1664. Rahab,

  1665. we have a

  1666. decision to

  1667. make.

  1668. As Peter

  1669. reminded us

  1670. this morning,

  1671. we can't

  1672. choose two

  1673. contradictory

  1674. options at

  1675. the same

  1676. time.

  1677. We're

  1678. called to

  1679. choose this

  1680. day who

  1681. we will

  1682. serve.

  1683. And like

  1684. Rahab,

  1685. such a

  1686. decision is

  1687. a life-changing

  1688. decision.

  1689. Like Rahab,

  1690. it can't

  1691. remain an

  1692. academic

  1693. question.

  1694. It's going

  1695. to affect

  1696. our lives.

  1697. It's going

  1698. to affect

  1699. our choices,

  1700. our words,

  1701. our actions.

  1702. It may

  1703. affect our

  1704. career choices,

  1705. what we

  1706. do with

  1707. our

  1708. weekends,

  1709. what we

  1710. do with

  1711. our

  1712. money.

  1713. It could

  1714. completely

  1715. mess up

  1716. our

  1717. plans.

  1718. In his

  1719. autobiography,

  1720. A Better

  1721. Ambition,

  1722. Tim

  1723. Farron,

  1724. the former

  1725. leader of

  1726. the Liberal

  1727. Democrats,

  1728. recounts his

  1729. struggles to

  1730. be a

  1731. faithful follower

  1732. of Christ

  1733. within the

  1734. world of

  1735. national

  1736. politics.

  1737. when he

  1738. finally

  1739. decided that

  1740. he could

  1741. no longer

  1742. continue in

  1743. that role,

  1744. he finished

  1745. his resignation

  1746. speech like

  1747. this.

  1748. I want to

  1749. say one

  1750. more thing.

  1751. I joined

  1752. our party

  1753. when I was

  1754. 16.

  1755. It is in

  1756. my blood.

  1757. I love our

  1758. history,

  1759. our people.

  1760. I thoroughly

  1761. love my

  1762. party.

  1763. Imagine how

  1764. proud I am to

  1765. lead this

  1766. party,

  1767. and then

  1768. imagine what

  1769. would lead

  1770. me to

  1771. voluntarily

  1772. relinquish

  1773. that honour.

  1774. In the

  1775. words of

  1776. Isaac Watts,

  1777. it would

  1778. have to be

  1779. something so

  1780. amazing,

  1781. so divine,

  1782. it demands

  1783. my heart,

  1784. my life,

  1785. my all.

  1786. Whatever you

  1787. think of his

  1788. politics,

  1789. or of how he

  1790. dealt with

  1791. some of the

  1792. challenges that

  1793. he faced,

  1794. that is what

  1795. we are called

  1796. to, to a

  1797. life that gives

  1798. everything,

  1799. as the

  1800. only reasonable

  1801. response.

  1802. And so,

  1803. having looked at

  1804. these four

  1805. illustrations,

  1806. what is

  1807. James'

  1808. conclusion?

  1809. What is

  1810. his frank

  1811. answer?

  1812. What is

  1813. his answer

  1814. to the

  1815. question,

  1816. can faith

  1817. without works

  1818. save?

  1819. In verse

  1820. 17, he's

  1821. pretty blunt.

  1822. Faith by

  1823. itself,

  1824. if it is

  1825. not accompanied

  1826. by action,

  1827. is dead.

  1828. And just

  1829. in case you

  1830. had a

  1831. different meaning

  1832. of dead

  1833. in mind,

  1834. he's even

  1835. more explicit

  1836. in verse 26.

  1837. As the

  1838. body without

  1839. the spirit

  1840. is dead,

  1841. so faith

  1842. without deeds

  1843. is dead.

  1844. James makes

  1845. it clear here

  1846. that when he

  1847. says dead,

  1848. he does not

  1849. mean resting,

  1850. inactive,

  1851. not ideal,

  1852. but still

  1853. faith.

  1854. He means

  1855. dead.

  1856. He means

  1857. it is not

  1858. faith at

  1859. all.

  1860. And so,

  1861. what's his

  1862. answer?

  1863. Can such

  1864. faith save?

  1865. I think we've

  1866. seen through

  1867. the examples

  1868. that his

  1869. answer is a

  1870. big no.

  1871. Such so-called

  1872. faith

  1873. cannot save.

  1874. But we

  1875. have to be

  1876. clear,

  1877. this is not

  1878. because we

  1879. need something

  1880. extra,

  1881. something

  1882. additional,

  1883. as well as

  1884. faith.

  1885. He's not

  1886. saying,

  1887. yeah,

  1888. faith is all

  1889. very well,

  1890. but for

  1891. salvation you

  1892. need works

  1893. as well as

  1894. that.

  1895. He's saying,

  1896. if it doesn't

  1897. change your

  1898. life,

  1899. it's not

  1900. faith at

  1901. all.

  1902. Because he's

  1903. shown us in

  1904. the first

  1905. example that

  1906. mere words

  1907. will not do

  1908. us any

  1909. good.

  1910. He's shown

  1911. us through

  1912. the example

  1913. of the

  1914. demons that

  1915. intellectual

  1916. belief on

  1917. its own

  1918. will not

  1919. save.

  1920. He's shown

  1921. us through

  1922. the example

  1923. of Abraham

  1924. that we are

  1925. saved by

  1926. faith,

  1927. not by our

  1928. works,

  1929. but that

  1930. how we

  1931. will live

  1932. will show

  1933. the reality

  1934. of our

  1935. faith.

  1936. It has

  1937. shown us

  1938. through the

  1939. example of

  1940. Rahab that

  1941. we have a

  1942. choice to

  1943. make.

  1944. We have to

  1945. decide who

  1946. we will

  1947. follow,

  1948. and that

  1949. decision will

  1950. change our

  1951. lives.

  1952. James goes

  1953. on in the

  1954. rest of the

  1955. book to

  1956. detail some

  1957. aspects of

  1958. what a life

  1959. lived for

  1960. Christ will

  1961. look like,

  1962. a life of

  1963. humility,

  1964. careful speech,

  1965. of helping the

  1966. needy.

  1967. But as I

  1968. come to an

  1969. end, I'm

  1970. very conscious

  1971. that dealing

  1972. with this

  1973. passage, that

  1974. some things I've

  1975. said may be

  1976. troubling to

  1977. some of you.

  1978. If anything I've

  1979. said has not

  1980. accurately

  1981. communicated what's

  1982. in the passage,

  1983. then I'm sorry,

  1984. forget what I've

  1985. said.

  1986. But if what is

  1987. troubling you was

  1988. not my words,

  1989. but the words of

  1990. scripture that

  1991. we have read

  1992. together, then

  1993. you should take

  1994. it seriously.

  1995. It's not for

  1996. me to question

  1997. your salvation,

  1998. that's between

  1999. you and God.

  2000. But if anything

  2001. I've said has

  2002. caused you to

  2003. question the

  2004. reality of your

  2005. faith, then

  2006. as I said

  2007. before, run to

  2008. Jesus.

  2009. And for all

  2010. of us, there's

  2011. a real challenge

  2012. here.

  2013. are we happy

  2014. to compromise,

  2015. to live lives

  2016. that don't make

  2017. it clear where

  2018. our allegiances

  2019. lie?

  2020. Or are we

  2021. willing to

  2022. step out and

  2023. live lives that

  2024. are transformed

  2025. by the power of

  2026. the Spirit at

  2027. work within us?

  2028. A life that

  2029. demonstrates that

  2030. our faith is the

  2031. real, genuine

  2032. thing and not a

  2033. fake.

  2034. Let's pray

  2035. together.

  2036. Father, we

  2037. thank you for

  2038. your word.

  2039. We thank you

  2040. that our

  2041. salvation is

  2042. only through

  2043. faith in you.

  2044. We thank you

  2045. for the work of

  2046. Jesus on the

  2047. cross, that he

  2048. bore all our

  2049. sin.

  2050. and that he

  2051. was raised to

  2052. give us new

  2053. life.

  2054. But Father, we

  2055. confess that

  2056. too often our

  2057. lives don't show

  2058. this reality.

  2059. Too often we

  2060. see great

  2061. things.

  2062. we think great

  2063. things.

  2064. And then we

  2065. live lives

  2066. that look just

  2067. like anyone

  2068. else.

  2069. Father, we

  2070. pray that you

  2071. will forgive

  2072. our hypocrisy

  2073. and that you

  2074. will give us

  2075. strength,

  2076. that you

  2077. will give us

  2078. a desire

  2079. to become

  2080. more and

  2081. more like

  2082. you and

  2083. that you

  2084. will work

  2085. in us each

  2086. day to

  2087. bring about

  2088. this

  2089. transformation.

  2090. And for

  2091. any whose

  2092. faith is not

  2093. in you,

  2094. Father, we

  2095. pray that

  2096. they will see

  2097. that there is

  2098. no hope

  2099. anywhere else,

  2100. but that

  2101. you are

  2102. there waiting

  2103. to welcome

  2104. them.

  2105. And we

  2106. pray that

  2107. they might

  2108. turn to

  2109. you tonight.

  2110. We ask

  2111. this in

  2112. Jesus'

  2113. name.

  2114. Amen.
