  1. If you've been here for the past three weeks, you'll know that we've looked at chapters 1, chapter 2, and chapter 3.

  2. And what we learned there is that by God's own admission, Job was a blameless and an upright man,

  3. who, God himself said, fears God and shuns evil.

  4. And so God gave Satan permission to take away from Job his wealth, his family, and in the end, even his health.

  5. To show that Job really, as God said, is like no other man, and that his faith is genuine.

  6. And Job proved God right.

  7. He responded to all of this with the words, the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away.

  8. May the name of the Lord be praised.

  9. And the Bible says that in all of this, Job did not sin in what he said.

  10. And we're now in the main part of the book after that prologue, which is all written in poetry,

  11. from chapter 3 that we looked at last week, all the way to the last chapter in the book, 42.

  12. Rather than narrating events, the author uses poetry to report to us the words of Job,

  13. the words of his friends, there's four of them, and the words of God himself.

  14. And what we saw last week in chapter 3 was Job's desperate first speech.

  15. And today we start looking at his friends' speeches.

  16. Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, to begin with, will all have something to say to Job.

  17. And the way it works is that one of them speaks, like we saw with Eliphaz in chapters 4 and 5,

  18. and then Job will reply, like he does today in chapters 6 and 7.

  19. And there are three, sorry, two full cycles with the three of them and Job going back and forth.

  20. And then there will be more speeches with a fourth friend and that God himself will speak.

  21. Seven days and seven nights his friends sat with Job.

  22. They were in shock.

  23. They couldn't even recognize him when they saw him.

  24. They wept, they tore their robes, and they sat with him.

  25. And no one said a word, not one word, for seven days,

  26. because they could see, the Bible says, how great his suffering was.

  27. But now Job has spoken.

  28. He's let out all of his pain,

  29. and he's cursed the day that he was born,

  30. in his lament, in chapter 3.

  31. And so now the friends are going to give their two cents.

  32. The friends who were supposed to act as wise counselors,

  33. but will in fact prove themselves quite the disappointment for Job.

  34. To the point that God himself at the end will tell them that he is not pleased with them.

  35. Above all, what is missing in these dialogues

  36. between Job and his friends is one thing.

  37. Hope.

  38. There is no hope, you might have noticed in the wisdom that Eliphaz has to offer.

  39. And there is no hope in Job's reply to him either.

  40. So today I have three points for us,

  41. as we look at these four chapters.

  42. All without hope.

  43. Hopeless religion.

  44. Hopeless friendship.

  45. And hopeless suffering.

  46. Let's begin with hopeless religion.

  47. Job's friends have a very clear view of the world,

  48. which is in line with the Jewish tradition.

  49. And it's basically determinism.

  50. Determinism means that everything that happens

  51. was already determined by events that happened before that.

  52. And so in this case, they have a very simple equation.

  53. You are faithful, you prosper.

  54. You sin, you're afflicted.

  55. Which isn't too different from today's prosperity gospel.

  56. Eliphaz makes it clear that he embraces this worldview

  57. in chapter 4, verses 7 and 8.

  58. Read with me, 4, 7, 8.

  59. Consider now who being innocent has ever perished.

  60. Where were the upright ever destroyed?

  61. As I have observed,

  62. those who plough evil and those who sow trouble reap it.

  63. So Eliphaz is reminding his friend Job

  64. of these deterministic truths

  65. that probably Job himself had believed in up until this point.

  66. Job, you reap what you sow.

  67. Remember?

  68. And Eliphaz allegedly even received a vision about it.

  69. A revelation that we see in chapter 4, verses 12 to 16.

  70. He describes what seems to be a very scary vision that came to him.

  71. He struggles to sleep.

  72. There's even a spirit gliding past his face.

  73. It's a chilling experience, he says,

  74. that makes his hair stand on end.

  75. But he builds all this tension as he retells the vision.

  76. But when the revelation finally comes in verse 17,

  77. it's quite disappointing, don't you think?

  78. It says,

  79. Can a mortal be more righteous than God?

  80. So all the vision reveals is that man cannot be more righteous than God.

  81. In fact, he goes on to say in the following verses,

  82. man is weak, is fragile, and God cannot put any trust in him.

  83. So man is mortal, basically.

  84. We don't know where Eliphaz thinks this revelation comes from.

  85. He doesn't really say.

  86. And if he really had a vision in the first place at all.

  87. But it wouldn't seem like a vision that would come from God

  88. because of how hopeless it is.

  89. What it does achieve is making Eliphaz's position clear.

  90. He thinks that Job is in trouble because he sinned.

  91. So you, Job, must stop declaring your innocence

  92. because no innocent was ever destroyed.

  93. You, Job, have to stop declaring your innocence

  94. because a mortal cannot be more righteous than God.

  95. If God is afflicting you,

  96. then it must mean that you are in the wrong.

  97. How dare you think you know better than God?

  98. You're basically saying that God is wrong.

  99. Now, there's one thing that we have to be careful about

  100. as we look at the words of Job's friends today

  101. and over the next few Sundays.

  102. And it's that we must not assume

  103. that everything they say is wrong.

  104. Because many of the things that they say

  105. are actually biblical truths.

  106. But as we'll see, it's how they say them

  107. and it's also what they don't say

  108. that ultimately betrays a lack of wisdom

  109. that then will lead God to say in chapter 42,

  110. I am angry with you and your two friends

  111. because you've not spoken the truth about me

  112. as my servant Job has.

  113. So if we think about this vision, for instance,

  114. the central message of it is not wrong.

  115. It is true that man is not more righteous than God.

  116. And the Bible misses no opportunity really

  117. to remind us that God is sovereign,

  118. God is just, God is righteous, God is perfect,

  119. and that we are nothing more than broken sinners.

  120. But if the message stops at that,

  121. then you're only left with a hopeless religion.

  122. What is missing?

  123. God's love is missing.

  124. That love that makes us,

  125. these useless broken sinners,

  126. his very own children.

  127. Not acquaintances, not close friends.

  128. We are his beloved children

  129. who are loved no matter what.

  130. There's one other thing that Eliphaz gets right

  131. in chapter 5, verse 17.

  132. He says,

  133. Blessed is the one whom God corrects.

  134. And he says that Job should not despise

  135. the discipline of the Almighty.

  136. The obvious reference here would be

  137. Proverbs 3, 12.

  138. The Lord disciplines those he loves,

  139. as a father the son he delights in.

  140. But again, the problem here is that

  141. Eliphaz is jumping to conclusions.

  142. He assumes that what is happening to Job

  143. is the result of the Lord's discipline.

  144. Which means that what he's offering to his friend

  145. at this specific point in time

  146. is utterly hopeless religion.

  147. Now imagine with me,

  148. you are Job.

  149. And you know that you are right before God.

  150. And that isn't because Job isn't a sinner.

  151. But it's because he didn't deny God.

  152. He wasn't hiding sin from God.

  153. He wasn't actively living in sin.

  154. And so imagine being him in that position

  155. and hearing that you lost everything

  156. because you are being disciplined.

  157. And you must repent of your sin

  158. if you want God to restore you.

  159. What hope is there for Job?

  160. Absolutely none.

  161. And so the truth is that Eliphaz

  162. has a simplistic and a short-sighted view

  163. of how God operates.

  164. It's a simplistic view of God

  165. because it assumes that there is this

  166. direct correlation between our relationship with God

  167. and our material blessings.

  168. in the here and now,

  169. determinism, as we said.

  170. And it's a short-sighted view of God

  171. because it assumes that the harvest is now.

  172. Because while it's true

  173. that we will reap what we sow

  174. and we know that the Bible

  175. talks about rewards and punishments

  176. but it's called the judgment

  177. and it isn't until the end of times.

  178. We know that for as long as we are in this world

  179. there is hope for any of us

  180. to become children of God.

  181. And that's why the harvest

  182. will only happen then, not now.

  183. And ultimately, Eliphaz is offering

  184. a hopeless religion

  185. because he tells Job

  186. that it all depends on him.

  187. God's favor will come back

  188. if Job accepts

  189. his alleged discipline.

  190. And so on the one hand

  191. he's saying that man is weak

  192. and on the other

  193. he seems to think that man's fate

  194. depends on his own strength

  195. to please God.

  196. That's why Job himself says

  197. I have no more strength

  198. what are you asking of me?

  199. Do you see the contradiction?

  200. And it's a hopeless religion

  201. because all that seems to matter

  202. to Eliphaz really

  203. is that Job's wealth

  204. is restored.

  205. If you look at chapter 5

  206. verses 24 to 26

  207. you'll see that

  208. it's those same blessings

  209. that Satan argued

  210. were the only reason

  211. that Job feared God

  212. that Eliphaz is now listing

  213. as reasons for Job to fear God.

  214. How ironic.

  215. So what this hopeless religion

  216. of Eliphaz does

  217. is project on God

  218. human behaviors.

  219. God is like this teacher

  220. who will give you a sticker

  221. if you behave well

  222. but will send you

  223. to the naughty corner

  224. if you don't.

  225. But if we go to the Gospel of John

  226. in chapter 9

  227. when the disciples ask Jesus

  228. whose fault it was

  229. that the blind man was blind

  230. was it because of his own sin

  231. or was it because of his parents' sin?

  232. Jesus says neither.

  233. He was blind

  234. so that the works of God

  235. might be displayed in him

  236. is what Jesus says.

  237. And on Jesus goes

  238. to perform a miracle

  239. and then be praised for it.

  240. Nothing to do with anyone's sin.

  241. And Paul tells us

  242. in 2 Corinthians

  243. that when he asked God

  244. to take his suffering away from him

  245. his proverbial thorn in the flesh

  246. God says

  247. my grace is sufficient for you

  248. for my power

  249. is made perfect

  250. in weakness.

  251. So the truth

  252. not the truth of Eliphaz

  253. but the truth of the Bible

  254. is that God

  255. works

  256. in mysterious

  257. ways.

  258. There will be times

  259. when

  260. what happens

  261. on this earth

  262. is a direct consequence

  263. of where we're at

  264. with God

  265. and we know

  266. we know from our own experience

  267. day in, day out

  268. that sin has

  269. negative consequences

  270. even here.

  271. But let's not make

  272. Eliphaz's mistake

  273. of judging

  274. all the people's worth

  275. or faith

  276. or our own

  277. worth or faith

  278. for that matter

  279. based on our material blessings

  280. or based on our

  281. misfortunes

  282. in this life.

  283. If we are struggling

  284. to make ends meet

  285. if we are disabled

  286. if we're fighting

  287. an illness

  288. that is not

  289. what defines us

  290. not before God.

  291. it says nothing

  292. to God

  293. and it should say

  294. nothing

  295. to any of us

  296. about our worth

  297. as a person

  298. let alone

  299. about our faith.

  300. Because good for good

  301. and bad for bad

  302. is not

  303. how the God

  304. of the Bible operates.

  305. That would be

  306. a hopeless religion

  307. and it would be

  308. a hopeless religion

  309. because

  310. the hope

  311. of the cross

  312. is missing.

  313. Because

  314. the God

  315. of the Bible

  316. truth is

  317. is a loving God

  318. is a God

  319. who wants

  320. what is good

  321. for us.

  322. Is a God

  323. who gives us hope

  324. in the cross

  325. of Christ

  326. and calls us

  327. to fixate

  328. our eyes

  329. on heaven

  330. not on this earth.

  331. Asks us

  332. a God

  333. who asks us

  334. to take comfort

  335. in his plan

  336. of eternal

  337. eternal salvation

  338. for us.

  339. Not in a house

  340. not in a family

  341. not in

  342. good health

  343. which are

  344. amazing blessings

  345. if we

  346. get them

  347. but they are

  348. only for a time.

  349. Our second point

  350. is

  351. hopeless

  352. friendship.

  353. Job

  354. is

  355. disappointed

  356. by his friends.

  357. It's as simple

  358. as that

  359. and he does

  360. not

  361. hide it.

  362. He tells

  363. Eliphaz

  364. loud

  365. and clear

  366. and in

  367. beautiful

  368. poetry.

  369. He uses

  370. this image

  371. of unreliable

  372. rivers.

  373. He says

  374. in verse 15

  375. in chapter 6

  376. but my brothers

  377. are as

  378. undependable

  379. as

  380. intermittent

  381. streams.

  382. He's talking

  383. about those

  384. rivers

  385. that overflow

  386. and destroy

  387. in the winter

  388. and dry up

  389. and stop running

  390. altogether

  391. in the summer.

  392. And so

  393. to describe

  394. his deep

  395. disappointment

  396. he says

  397. that he feels

  398. like a

  399. traveler.

  400. A traveler

  401. who leaves

  402. his route

  403. to go

  404. and find

  405. this river

  406. that he knows

  407. of so that

  408. he can get

  409. water to

  410. continue

  411. on his

  412. journey.

  413. And he's

  414. confident

  415. that he'll

  416. find the

  417. water

  418. that he so

  419. desperately

  420. needs to

  421. keep going.

  422. But he gets

  423. there

  424. and there's

  425. no water

  426. and he

  427. perishes.

  428. Verses 20

  429. and 21

  430. in chapter 6

  431. they are

  432. distressed

  433. because they

  434. had been

  435. confident.

  436. They arrived

  437. there only

  438. to be

  439. disappointed.

  440. Now you

  441. too,

  442. he says

  443. to Eliphaz,

  444. have proved

  445. to be

  446. of no

  447. help.

  448. So what

  449. is wrong

  450. with the

  451. way that

  452. Eliphaz is

  453. trying to

  454. be a

  455. friend here?

  456. There's

  457. three things

  458. I'd like

  459. to mention.

  460. I think

  461. in his

  462. friendship

  463. there is

  464. no kindness,

  465. in his

  466. friendship

  467. there is

  468. no truth,

  469. and of course

  470. in his

  471. friendship

  472. there is

  473. no hope.

  474. The

  475. opening

  476. itself

  477. of

  478. Eliphaz's

  479. speech

  480. already shows

  481. that there

  482. is no

  483. kindness

  484. in his

  485. words.

  486. It really

  487. feels like

  488. he must

  489. have been

  490. biting

  491. his tongue

  492. for those

  493. seven days

  494. while everyone

  495. was silent.

  496. You can

  497. picture him

  498. just getting

  499. more and

  500. more eager

  501. to finally

  502. break the

  503. silence

  504. and say

  505. what he

  506. says in

  507. the first

  508. six verses

  509. of chapter

  510. four.

  511. So Job,

  512. you,

  513. the one

  514. who always

  515. encouraged

  516. those who

  517. were struggling,

  518. the one

  519. who strengthened

  520. faltering

  521. knees,

  522. now trouble

  523. comes to

  524. you and

  525. you are

  526. discouraged?

  527. And then he

  528. immediately

  529. attacks,

  530. should not

  531. your piety

  532. be your

  533. confidence

  534. and your

  535. blameless

  536. ways,

  537. your hope?

  538. So if you

  539. paraphrase,

  540. you've done

  541. something wrong,

  542. Job.

  543. If you

  544. can't find

  545. hope in

  546. your

  547. blameless

  548. ways,

  549. then maybe

  550. they're not

  551. as blameless

  552. as you'd

  553. like us

  554. to think.

  555. And so

  556. again,

  557. try and

  558. put yourself

  559. in Job's

  560. shoes.

  561. You have

  562. lost so

  563. much that

  564. you don't

  565. even know

  566. what you

  567. are mourning

  568. anymore.

  569. Are you

  570. mourning

  571. your family?

  572. Are you

  573. mourning

  574. your houses?

  575. Are you

  576. mourning

  577. your health?

  578. Your servants?

  579. Or maybe

  580. as Job

  581. thinks,

  582. it's not

  583. the truth,

  584. but he

  585. thinks that

  586. God has

  587. turned against

  588. him.

  589. Is that

  590. what you're

  591. mourning?

  592. You don't

  593. even know.

  594. There's so

  595. much happening.

  596. Even your

  597. wife isn't

  598. helping with

  599. her advice

  600. to just

  601. curse God

  602. and be

  603. done with

  604. it.

  605. And so

  606. the one

  607. source of

  608. relief,

  609. that refreshing

  610. water that

  611. you're looking

  612. forward to at

  613. this point can

  614. only be your

  615. friends.

  616. And here

  617. they are.

  618. They finally

  619. open their

  620. mouth and

  621. the first thing

  622. that they say

  623. is,

  624. eh,

  625. you made

  626. it look

  627. easy when

  628. it wasn't

  629. you.

  630. Not as

  631. easy now,

  632. is it?

  633. And Job

  634. calls him

  635. out.

  636. In verse

  637. 14 in

  638. chapter 6

  639. he says,

  640. anyone who

  641. withholds

  642. kindness

  643. from a

  644. friend forsakes

  645. the fear of

  646. the Almighty.

  647. Very strong

  648. words again.

  649. By being a

  650. bad friend,

  651. you Eliphaz

  652. are not just

  653. letting me

  654. down,

  655. you're letting

  656. God down,

  657. you're forsaking

  658. the fear of

  659. the Almighty.

  660. So there's

  661. no kindness

  662. in what

  663. Eliphaz says

  664. and there is

  665. no truth.

  666. His response

  667. to his

  668. friend being

  669. in distress

  670. is so

  671. insincere.

  672. Instead of

  673. acting with

  674. love and

  675. kindness,

  676. instead of

  677. mourning with

  678. him and

  679. trying to

  680. encourage him,

  681. he seems to

  682. feel like

  683. what he needs

  684. to do is

  685. prove himself.

  686. Job says

  687. in verse 21,

  688. still in

  689. chapter 6,

  690. you see

  691. something dreadful

  692. and are

  693. afraid.

  694. Job realizes

  695. that Eliphaz

  696. is scared

  697. of what he

  698. sees and

  699. reacts in

  700. line with

  701. that.

  702. So this

  703. fear leads

  704. him to

  705. start just

  706. dishing out

  707. this half-baked

  708. wisdom,

  709. these unlikely

  710. visions,

  711. these dogmas

  712. of this hopeless

  713. religion that

  714. he is trying

  715. to sell.

  716. And again,

  717. Job pushes

  718. back.

  719. He says

  720. in chapter

  721. 5,

  722. verses 24

  723. and 25,

  724. teach me

  725. and I

  726. will be

  727. quiet.

  728. Show me

  729. where I

  730. have been

  731. wrong.

  732. How painful

  733. are honest

  734. words,

  735. but what

  736. do your

  737. arguments

  738. prove?

  739. He's saying,

  740. Eliphaz,

  741. I understand,

  742. I've been

  743. speaking very

  744. honestly,

  745. my words

  746. are painful,

  747. but what

  748. do your

  749. arguments

  750. prove?

  751. You've done

  752. a lot of

  753. talking,

  754. but clearly

  755. not much

  756. listening.

  757. Job opened

  758. his heart

  759. in chapter 3,

  760. but Eliphaz

  761. was not

  762. listening.

  763. He wasn't

  764. listening like

  765. a friend.

  766. He was just

  767. waiting for

  768. his time

  769. to talk

  770. and say

  771. just what

  772. he had

  773. already set

  774. his mind

  775. on.

  776. Did any

  777. of what

  778. Eliphaz

  779. say

  780. prove that

  781. Job was

  782. indeed guilty

  783. in front

  784. of God?

  785. No,

  786. it didn't.

  787. Did this

  788. stop him?

  789. No,

  790. it didn't.

  791. He just

  792. went ahead

  793. anyway,

  794. but there

  795. was no

  796. truth in

  797. his accusations.

  798. And so

  799. finally,

  800. his friendship

  801. lacks hope.

  802. It lacks

  803. hope because

  804. not only

  805. is Eliphaz

  806. not showing

  807. Job his

  808. own love,

  809. he's also

  810. failing to

  811. point Job

  812. to God's

  813. love.

  814. He is

  815. pointing Job

  816. to a

  817. calculating,

  818. an eye

  819. for an eye,

  820. a disciplining

  821. kind of

  822. God.

  823. There's

  824. nothing wrong

  825. with what

  826. Eliphaz says

  827. about God

  828. at the end

  829. of chapter 5,

  830. where he

  831. describes

  832. him as

  833. the one

  834. in control

  835. of creation,

  836. the one

  837. who wounds

  838. but also

  839. binds up.

  840. But again,

  841. it's what's

  842. missing from

  843. his description

  844. of God

  845. that is the

  846. issue.

  847. Because he's

  848. pointing Job

  849. to this God

  850. who will be

  851. kind to you

  852. if you are

  853. to him.

  854. He's not

  855. pointing Job

  856. to a God

  857. who loves

  858. you no

  859. matter what,

  860. a God who

  861. knows you

  862. intimately,

  863. who understands,

  864. God understands

  865. what you're

  866. going through,

  867. a God

  868. who is

  869. the refuge

  870. in the

  871. time of

  872. need.

  873. And so

  874. Eliphaz,

  875. unfortunately,

  876. in his

  877. friendship to

  878. Job,

  879. offers no

  880. hope to

  881. him whatsoever.

  882. And so

  883. as a simple

  884. application for

  885. us here,

  886. let's be

  887. friends who

  888. offer kindness,

  889. who offer

  890. truth,

  891. not our own

  892. truth,

  893. but the

  894. truth of the

  895. Bible,

  896. people,

  897. and who

  898. offer hope,

  899. the hope

  900. of the

  901. cross.

  902. I don't

  903. know if you

  904. find that it

  905. can be quite

  906. tempting to

  907. feel like you're

  908. sitting at

  909. test when

  910. you're called

  911. to comfort

  912. a friend.

  913. We might

  914. feel like we

  915. have to prove

  916. that we know

  917. the right thing

  918. to do,

  919. that we know

  920. what God

  921. would want

  922. them to

  923. do.

  924. Maybe we

  925. feel like

  926. God's

  927. spokesperson

  928. like Eliphaz

  929. did here.

  930. But in

  931. doing so,

  932. we risk

  933. getting it

  934. all wrong.

  935. Because the

  936. main thing we

  937. have to make

  938. sure is that

  939. we're acting

  940. out of love

  941. and not to

  942. prove ourselves

  943. as friends.

  944. We are not

  945. there to

  946. recite Bible

  947. verses,

  948. let alone

  949. confuse our

  950. friends with

  951. thoughts,

  952. visions,

  953. dreams that

  954. we thought we

  955. might have

  956. had and are

  957. not quite

  958. clear on

  959. ourselves.

  960. We are

  961. there to

  962. show them

  963. the love

  964. of Christ.

  965. We are

  966. there to

  967. remind them

  968. that the

  969. only secure

  970. hope that

  971. we have

  972. in this

  973. life is

  974. God's

  975. love for

  976. them.

  977. But God's

  978. love for

  979. them as

  980. it is

  981. described in

  982. the Bible.

  983. Everything

  984. else can

  985. disappear in

  986. an instant.

  987. And our

  988. hope is not

  989. just on God

  990. restoring our

  991. material blessings

  992. in this

  993. life, as

  994. Eliphaz seems

  995. to think.

  996. Our hope

  997. is in

  998. spending

  999. eternity

  1000. with God.

  1001. And so

  1002. whether our

  1003. friend who

  1004. is struggling

  1005. is a child

  1006. of God

  1007. or not,

  1008. it's his

  1009. love that

  1010. we want to

  1011. point them

  1012. to.

  1013. But,

  1014. and here

  1015. comes the

  1016. difficult bit,

  1017. in order to

  1018. do so,

  1019. we have to

  1020. know and

  1021. we have to

  1022. be experiencing

  1023. that love

  1024. ourselves.

  1025. So we need

  1026. to be sitting

  1027. with our

  1028. Bibles,

  1029. we need to

  1030. let the

  1031. Spirit equip

  1032. us in

  1033. order to

  1034. be kind,

  1035. truthful,

  1036. hopeful

  1037. friends.

  1038. I have

  1039. been an

  1040. Eliphaz

  1041. when my

  1042. mum came

  1043. to me in

  1044. distress while

  1045. fighting her

  1046. cancer.

  1047. If I had

  1048. been more

  1049. in communion

  1050. with God

  1051. through his

  1052. word,

  1053. chances are

  1054. in my

  1055. conversations

  1056. with her,

  1057. I would

  1058. have talked

  1059. a bit less

  1060. about how

  1061. lucky she

  1062. was actually

  1063. having it,

  1064. that there

  1065. were people

  1066. in worse

  1067. situations

  1068. than hers,

  1069. that she

  1070. should toughen

  1071. up a bit.

  1072. And I

  1073. would have

  1074. probably

  1075. prayed with

  1076. her more,

  1077. I would

  1078. have probably

  1079. comforted

  1080. her more

  1081. by reminding

  1082. her that

  1083. she is

  1084. loved by

  1085. the God

  1086. who created

  1087. her and

  1088. sent his

  1089. son to

  1090. die for

  1091. her sins.

  1092. Finally,

  1093. our third

  1094. and last

  1095. point is

  1096. hopeless

  1097. suffering,

  1098. as we look

  1099. at Job

  1100. now.

  1101. Job is

  1102. in

  1103. absolutely

  1104. agonizing

  1105. pain.

  1106. pain.

  1107. He told

  1108. us in

  1109. chapter 3

  1110. and he

  1111. keeps

  1112. telling

  1113. us

  1114. here.

  1115. And I

  1116. think,

  1117. I know

  1118. it's been

  1119. a long

  1120. reading

  1121. already,

  1122. but I'd

  1123. like to

  1124. look again

  1125. at some

  1126. of the

  1127. words that

  1128. he uses

  1129. to describe

  1130. his pain

  1131. because the

  1132. whole point

  1133. of Hebrew

  1134. poetry in

  1135. here is

  1136. to help

  1137. us feel

  1138. the pain

  1139. that Job

  1140. is feeling.

  1141. So chapter

  1142. 6,

  1143. verses 2

  1144. and 3,

  1145. if only my

  1146. anguish

  1147. could be

  1148. weighed and

  1149. all my

  1150. misery

  1151. be placed

  1152. on the

  1153. scales,

  1154. it would

  1155. surely

  1156. outweigh

  1157. the sand

  1158. of the

  1159. seas.

  1160. And then

  1161. in verse 4,

  1162. the arrows

  1163. of the

  1164. Almighty

  1165. are in

  1166. me.

  1167. My spirit

  1168. drinks in

  1169. their poison,

  1170. God's

  1171. terrors

  1172. are marshaled

  1173. against me.

  1174. Verses 8

  1175. and 9,

  1176. all that I

  1177. may have

  1178. my request

  1179. that God

  1180. would grant

  1181. what I

  1182. hope for,

  1183. that God

  1184. would be

  1185. willing

  1186. to crush

  1187. me,

  1188. to let

  1189. lose his

  1190. hand and

  1191. cut off

  1192. my life.

  1193. And finally

  1194. in chapter

  1195. 7,

  1196. verses 15

  1197. and 16,

  1198. which we

  1199. just read,

  1200. I prefer

  1201. strangling

  1202. and death

  1203. rather than

  1204. this body

  1205. of mine.

  1206. I despise

  1207. my life.

  1208. I would

  1209. not live

  1210. forever.

  1211. Let me

  1212. alone.

  1213. My days

  1214. have no

  1215. meaning.

  1216. He doesn't

  1217. even attempt

  1218. to hide

  1219. that his

  1220. pain is so

  1221. great that

  1222. he just

  1223. wants it

  1224. all to

  1225. end.

  1226. He would

  1227. rather be

  1228. dead than

  1229. keep suffering

  1230. the way he

  1231. does.

  1232. That's

  1233. why he

  1234. says in

  1235. verse 3

  1236. of chapter

  1237. 6,

  1238. no wonder

  1239. my words

  1240. have been

  1241. impetuous.

  1242. What were

  1243. you expecting,

  1244. Eliphaz?

  1245. And it's

  1246. not because

  1247. I've become

  1248. a fool

  1249. like you

  1250. think,

  1251. it's because

  1252. of the

  1253. utter misery

  1254. that I

  1255. find myself

  1256. in.

  1257. This

  1258. anguish

  1259. and misery

  1260. that's

  1261. heavier than

  1262. all the

  1263. sand in

  1264. the world.

  1265. And that's

  1266. heavy.

  1267. But his

  1268. suffering is

  1269. hopeless,

  1270. hopeless,

  1271. and it

  1272. is hopeless

  1273. because he's

  1274. unable to

  1275. see beyond

  1276. what is

  1277. happening to

  1278. him.

  1279. And so he

  1280. thinks that

  1281. God is at

  1282. war with

  1283. him.

  1284. His arrows

  1285. are in me,

  1286. he says in

  1287. verse 4.

  1288. And then in

  1289. verses 19 and

  1290. 20 in chapter

  1291. 7, he's

  1292. speaking directly

  1293. to God and

  1294. he says,

  1295. will you

  1296. never look

  1297. away from

  1298. me?

  1299. Or let me

  1300. alone even

  1301. for an

  1302. instant?

  1303. Why have

  1304. you made

  1305. me your

  1306. target?

  1307. Job

  1308. misunderstands

  1309. why he's

  1310. suffering.

  1311. He thinks

  1312. that God

  1313. is attacking

  1314. him.

  1315. He doesn't

  1316. think that

  1317. there is

  1318. something

  1319. bigger at

  1320. play here,

  1321. that God

  1322. in his

  1323. infinite wisdom

  1324. as part

  1325. of his

  1326. cosmic

  1327. plan

  1328. knows

  1329. better.

  1330. And the

  1331. truth is

  1332. that we

  1333. don't know.

  1334. We don't

  1335. know why

  1336. God made

  1337. Job suffer

  1338. like this.

  1339. But we

  1340. know that

  1341. God wasn't

  1342. attacking

  1343. him.

  1344. We know

  1345. from the

  1346. first two

  1347. chapters that

  1348. God thought

  1349. highly of

  1350. Job and

  1351. loved him.

  1352. God is

  1353. not against

  1354. him.

  1355. But Job

  1356. cannot see

  1357. that in

  1358. his pain.

  1359. So what do

  1360. we learn from

  1361. Job's

  1362. suffering?

  1363. I think one

  1364. thing that we

  1365. learn is that

  1366. we can

  1367. suffer, we

  1368. can mourn,

  1369. we can be

  1370. in communion

  1371. with God

  1372. at the

  1373. same

  1374. time.

  1375. The

  1376. Bible is

  1377. full of

  1378. examples of

  1379. godly people

  1380. honestly talking

  1381. about the

  1382. pain that

  1383. they're going

  1384. through.

  1385. Many of

  1386. the Psalms

  1387. are all

  1388. about that.

  1389. And as we

  1390. see here,

  1391. that pain

  1392. can be so

  1393. great that

  1394. it makes

  1395. you wish

  1396. you'd

  1397. rather die.

  1398. And so if

  1399. any of us

  1400. are feeling

  1401. like the

  1402. pain is

  1403. just too

  1404. much and

  1405. we don't

  1406. want to

  1407. suffer

  1408. anymore,

  1409. God is

  1410. not calling

  1411. any of us

  1412. to put a

  1413. smile on

  1414. our faces

  1415. no matter

  1416. what.

  1417. He's not

  1418. telling us

  1419. go around

  1420. and tell

  1421. the world

  1422. that the

  1423. moment you

  1424. become a

  1425. Christian,

  1426. all the

  1427. problems

  1428. disappear.

  1429. There's no

  1430. more suffering.

  1431. Never does the

  1432. Bible lie to

  1433. us and pretend

  1434. that life is a

  1435. stroll in a

  1436. park the

  1437. moment you

  1438. become a

  1439. Christian.

  1440. And so I

  1441. personally find

  1442. it liberating

  1443. to see an

  1444. upright man

  1445. like Job

  1446. show us that

  1447. we can be

  1448. honest about

  1449. what we're

  1450. going through.

  1451. We can

  1452. take it to

  1453. God and

  1454. ask him

  1455. why.

  1456. As far as

  1457. we can see

  1458. Job doesn't

  1459. contemplate

  1460. suicide as

  1461. an option

  1462. here.

  1463. He does

  1464. ask to

  1465. make it

  1466. stop.

  1467. Jesus

  1468. himself

  1469. asked to

  1470. be spared

  1471. his suffering

  1472. but your

  1473. will be

  1474. done,

  1475. not mine

  1476. is what

  1477. he said.

  1478. So if

  1479. you're ill,

  1480. if someone

  1481. you know

  1482. is ill and

  1483. you feel

  1484. powerless as

  1485. you watch

  1486. them suffer,

  1487. if life is

  1488. tough because

  1489. of broken

  1490. relationships,

  1491. because of

  1492. loneliness,

  1493. we all go

  1494. through difficult

  1495. stuff at

  1496. some point,

  1497. but some

  1498. of us much

  1499. more than

  1500. others.

  1501. Well, no

  1502. one is asking

  1503. us to pretend

  1504. that we're

  1505. okay.

  1506. Talk to

  1507. God, talk

  1508. to friends,

  1509. scream if

  1510. you need

  1511. to.

  1512. You're not

  1513. being a good

  1514. Christian by

  1515. smiling and

  1516. saying fine

  1517. when people

  1518. ask you how

  1519. are you.

  1520. And if

  1521. you're not

  1522. a Christian

  1523. and you've

  1524. been led

  1525. to believe

  1526. that Christians

  1527. are deluded

  1528. people,

  1529. we think you

  1530. pray and

  1531. problems go

  1532. away.

  1533. And that's

  1534. not what we

  1535. believe.

  1536. It's not what

  1537. the Bible

  1538. teaches us

  1539. either.

  1540. So please

  1541. go check for

  1542. yourself in

  1543. the Bible.

  1544. Please come

  1545. speak to us.

  1546. And the

  1547. Bible, as you

  1548. investigate it,

  1549. will show you

  1550. something that

  1551. we learn, I

  1552. think, from

  1553. Job's suffering

  1554. to here.

  1555. And with

  1556. this we'll

  1557. conclude.

  1558. And it's

  1559. that in our

  1560. suffering we

  1561. should run

  1562. to God,

  1563. not away

  1564. from him.

  1565. Job asks

  1566. God to

  1567. look away

  1568. from him,

  1569. to leave

  1570. him alone.

  1571. But God

  1572. takes no

  1573. pleasure in

  1574. seeing us

  1575. struggle.

  1576. He is our

  1577. loving creator

  1578. and saviour

  1579. who promised

  1580. not to leave

  1581. us.

  1582. Jesus says

  1583. in Matthew

  1584. 28,

  1585. and surely

  1586. I am with

  1587. you always

  1588. to the very

  1589. end of the

  1590. age.

  1591. When we are

  1592. suffering, there

  1593. is no better

  1594. refuge than

  1595. the cross.

  1596. Because the

  1597. cross is the

  1598. ultimate proof

  1599. of God's

  1600. love for us.

  1601. Our suffering

  1602. is for a

  1603. time.

  1604. It's terrible

  1605. pain.

  1606. No one

  1607. pretends it

  1608. isn't.

  1609. It's extremely

  1610. difficult.

  1611. But the

  1612. fact itself

  1613. that we have

  1614. a book,

  1615. like the

  1616. book of

  1617. Job,

  1618. in our

  1619. lives,

  1620. tells us

  1621. that God

  1622. knows about

  1623. that pain,

  1624. that he

  1625. understands it

  1626. intimately.

  1627. And so we

  1628. can be sure

  1629. that in our

  1630. suffering,

  1631. he is there

  1632. with us.

  1633. And he is

  1634. the one who

  1635. gives us

  1636. hope that

  1637. suffering is

  1638. not all

  1639. there is to

  1640. life.

  1641. Suffering only

  1642. features in

  1643. this broken

  1644. world for a

  1645. time.

  1646. And so in

  1647. our suffering,

  1648. let's run to

  1649. the cross and

  1650. let's ask

  1651. God to be

  1652. with us and

  1653. give us

  1654. the strength

  1655. that we

  1656. so terribly

  1657. need every

  1658. day to

  1659. keep going

  1660. when everything

  1661. seems too

  1662. much to

  1663. deal with.

  1664. Let's ask

  1665. his spirit to

  1666. remind us of

  1667. the certain

  1668. hope that

  1669. one day it

  1670. will all be

  1671. over and

  1672. we will be

  1673. in the

  1674. presence of

  1675. our good

  1676. and loving

  1677. God.

  1678. Let's

  1679. pray.

  1680. Lord, we

  1681. thank you

  1682. because at

  1683. the cross

  1684. we find

  1685. hope.

  1686. Hope that

  1687. one day

  1688. we'll be

  1689. with you.

  1690. Lord, we

  1691. thank you

  1692. because at

  1693. the cross

  1694. we find

  1695. love.

  1696. Love like

  1697. no other

  1698. because you

  1699. sacrificed

  1700. your son

  1701. out of

  1702. love for

  1703. every single

  1704. one of

  1705. us.

  1706. Father, we

  1707. thank you

  1708. because at

  1709. the cross

  1710. we find

  1711. refuge.

  1712. We find

  1713. comfort in

  1714. our suffering.

  1715. And so

  1716. Lord, we

  1717. pray that

  1718. by spending

  1719. time in

  1720. this beautiful

  1721. book, by

  1722. the power

  1723. of your

  1724. spirit, we

  1725. will learn

  1726. how to

  1727. suffer well

  1728. and how

  1729. to comfort

  1730. well those

  1731. who suffer.

  1732. We pray in

  1733. Jesus' name.

  1734. Amen.
