  1. Thanks guys. My name is Alistair. I'm the assistant here and I'm going to continue our reading in Job chapter 10.

    Job 10 chapter mention

  2. This is Job speaking and he now turns his attention to God.

  3. In Job chapter 10 verse 1 it says,

    Job 10:1

  4. I loathe my very life, therefore I will give free reign to my complaint and speak out of the bitterness of my soul.

  5. I say to God, do not declare me guilty, but tell me what charges you have against me.

  6. Does it please you to oppress me, to spurn the work of your hands while you smile on the plans of the wicked?

  7. Do you have eyes of flesh? Do you see as a mortal sees?

  8. Are your days like those of a mortal and your years like those of a strong man?

  9. That you must search out my faults and probe after my sin.

  10. Though you know that I am not guilty and that no one can rescue me from your hand.

  11. Your hands shaped me and made me. Will you now turn and destroy me?

  12. Remember that you molded me like clay.

  13. Will you now turn me to dust again?

  14. Did you not pour me out like milk and curdle me like cheese?

  15. Clothed me with skin and flesh and knit me together with bones and sinews?

  16. You gave me life and showed me kindness and in your providence watched over my spirit.

  17. But this is what you concealed in your heart.

  18. And I know that this was in your mind.

  19. If I have, if I sinned, you would be watching me and would not let my offense go unpunished.

  20. If I am guilty, woe to me.

  21. Even if I am innocent, I cannot lift my head.

  22. For I am full of shame and drowned in my affliction.

  23. If I hold my head high, you stalk me like a lion and again display your awesome power against me.

  24. You bring new witnesses against me and increase your anger towards me.

  25. Your forces come against me wave upon wave.

  26. Why then did you bring me out of the womb?

  27. I wish I had died before any eye saw me.

  28. If only I had never come into being or had been carried straight from the womb to the grave.

  29. Are not my few days almost over?

  30. Turn from me so that I can have a moment's rest before I go to the place of no return to the land of gloom and utter darkness.

  31. To the land of deepest night of utter darkness and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.

  32. That is a very long and difficult passage.

  33. So let's turn to our great God in prayer and ask for his strength as we focus on it.

  34. Let's pray together.

  35. Father, we come to passages like this and we have so many questions.

  36. We have so many thoughts.

  37. And Lord, we ask this morning that you would still our hearts.

  38. That you would take distractions away from us.

  39. And Lord, would you help us focus on your word.

  40. Father, I pray that I would decrease and you would increase.

  41. And may the words of my mouth and the meditations of all of our hearts be pleasing to you, our rock and our redeemer.

  42. Amen.

  43. It'll be really helpful if you have that passage open in front of you as we focus on it this morning.

  44. But I wonder if you've ever heard the rhyme.

  45. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

  46. You've probably heard that before.

  47. It often gets thrown around on playgrounds at school.

  48. Maybe like me, you yourself have even used it when you were called names or teased as a child.

  49. But the more experience we have under our belts, the more we go on in life,

  50. we realize that words can do more harm than physical attacks.

  51. And the scars that they leave, whilst they aren't visible, can be just as damaging.

  52. If we are constantly hearing the same harmful words,

  53. then there will come a point where we actually start to believe it's true.

  54. Maybe you've been told lies repeatedly over the years that you're worthless.

  55. That you're a waste of space.

  56. That you're nothing.

  57. Those are lies.

  58. But they leave a lasting impression on a person.

  59. They leave unseen wounds that hurt and continue to hurt years later.

  60. And so a more realistic rhyme is,

  61. sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will hurt forever.

  62. That's what we're going to think about this morning in Job chapter 8 through to chapter 10.

    Job 8 chapter mention

  63. And Job is sitting on the ash heap, remember, with his friends or so-called friends all around him.

  64. Eliphaz has spoken to him from a kind of philosophical, uber-spiritual approach,

  65. saying that he had a vision and he understands Job's suffering.

  66. He knows what's going on.

  67. And so whilst Eliphaz wasn't nice in what he said to Job in chapters 4 and 5,

  68. the way he said it was reasonably nice.

  69. It was okay.

  70. But this morning we listen into the conversation between Bildad and Job.

  71. And Bildad proves that words do hurt.

  72. In fact, it's as if Bildad is deliberately trying to inflict more pain on Job.

  73. So if Eliphaz's response was a bit more philosophical,

  74. Bildad's response is that of a traditionalist who has zero sympathy

  75. and offers no comfort to his friend in pain,

  76. but instead seems to pour lemon juice on an open wound.

  77. So we're going to look at Job 8 to 10 under two headings,

  78. words that wound and the words of the wounded.

  79. So the first thing we see in this section of Job in chapter 8 are words that wound,

  80. words that wound.

  81. So Eliphaz was the subtle voice who was measured in his tone to Job.

  82. In contrast to that, Bildad is like a wrecking bull.

  83. He is a bull in a china shop or a vicious dog who goes right for the jugular.

  84. Bildad comes to essentially the same conclusion as Eliphaz,

  85. that Job is suffering because of some sin in his life,

  86. but his approach is slightly different.

  87. And that's why studying these cycles of speeches is really helpful

  88. because it gets us thinking through how we understand suffering today

  89. and the worldviews that we let influence us.

  90. And these speeches tell us how not to speak to a friend in that pain.

  91. So Bildad starts, read with me, in verse 2.

  92. To Job he says,

  93. How long will you say such things?

  94. Your words are a blustering wind.

  95. And so he sees his friend in agony on an ash pile.

  96. And basically he says,

  97. Job, snap out of it.

  98. How long are you going to keep going on like this?

  99. And then he insults him by saying at the end of verse 2

  100. that he's just full of hot air.

  101. Bildad is angry.

  102. He is frustrated at Job's response to Eliphaz

  103. and he is impatient.

  104. See, Job has been on that ash heap for months.

  105. Bildad and his friends have arrived on the scene about a week or so ago

  106. and Bildad has already lost the rag with Job.

  107. He has no desire to comfort him

  108. and no desire to sympathize with him.

  109. Now comforters are supposed to be patient

  110. and we are supposed to be in it for the long haul.

  111. Don't get me wrong.

  112. It is hard to comfort people over the long haul.

  113. It isn't easy.

  114. As you sit with those who suffer,

  115. you need to know that their suffering won't be over in a week.

  116. You need to stick it out with them.

  117. We need to make the conscious, self-sacrificing decision

  118. to walk alongside those who are suffering

  119. and to sit with them in their pain.

  120. For those of us who are looking on

  121. on someone else's suffering,

  122. it's really easy to become impatient, isn't it?

  123. And to think that the event

  124. or the cause of that suffering took place in the past,

  125. so surely they should be fine by now.

  126. As comforters, we can move on very quickly

  127. from things that have happened.

  128. But for those who have been affected directly by suffering,

  129. it can take time

  130. and those wounds may never actually heal properly.

  131. The death of a loved one

  132. will always leave a void in someone's life.

  133. Past trauma can leave scars

  134. that make every single day difficult.

  135. Illnesses can make what seems to be a simple task

  136. impossible to us.

  137. Our job as a community,

  138. who are called to care for each other well,

  139. is to be patient.

  140. We need to be in it for the long haul.

  141. We cannot be impatient like Bildad

  142. and expect people just to get over their suffering.

  143. And so Bildad has listened to Job's lament

  144. and his outpouring of grief.

  145. And his response is he's fed up.

  146. He's angry because he thinks that Job's questioning

  147. is a sign of unfaithfulness.

  148. And so Bildad insults Job out of anger

  149. and we see why in verse 3.

  150. Bildad says,

  151. does God pervert justice?

  152. Does the Almighty pervert what is right?

  153. And so Bildad's assessment of God

  154. is 100% correct.

  155. God is completely just.

  156. There is no measure of wavering in him.

  157. And this is the difficult thing with Job's friends

  158. because some of the things they say are spot on.

  159. They get it right.

  160. But often, and most of the time,

  161. the conclusions that they draw from that

  162. are completely wrong.

  163. So this is the foundational statement of Bildad's argument.

  164. God is completely just.

  165. But it only takes the next sentence

  166. to see how wrong his conclusion is.

  167. Read verse 4 with me.

  168. Bildad speaking to Job says,

  169. Bildad says,

  170. Bildad says,

  171. Bildad says,

  172. Bildad says,

  173. Job,

  174. your kids are dead because they sinned

  175. and if you keep going like this,

  176. you're next.

  177. Bildad has no idea what's going on.

  178. He has no idea that this is Satan's attempt

  179. to trick Job into cursing God.

  180. Bildad doesn't know that this is God's test

  181. to prove the genuineness of Job's faith.

  182. Friends, we need to be very, very careful

  183. of the words we use

  184. and the conclusions that we draw

  185. about someone suffering

  186. because our wounds,

  187. our words can wound.

  188. In verse 4, Bildad says,

  189. God is just, Job.

  190. That is why your kids died.

  191. In verses 5 to 7, he says,

  192. turn to God, do good,

  193. and he will restore you,

  194. very much focusing on material possessions.

  195. He has a very black and white worldview.

  196. So for Bildad, if you do good,

  197. God will reward you.

  198. And if you do bad,

  199. you will be punished.

  200. And we see this worldview

  201. all over the place today, don't we?

  202. Maybe it's a worldview

  203. that we even have ourselves.

  204. As Christians,

  205. often when things go wrong in our lives,

  206. we're tempted to think

  207. that God is punishing us for our sins,

  208. either past or present.

  209. So often we're tempted to think

  210. that God is afflicting us

  211. because we deserve it.

  212. But friends, the problem with that worldview

  213. is that it leaves no room for forgiveness.

  214. It leaves no room for redemptive suffering.

  215. In short,

  216. that worldview leaves no room

  217. for Jesus Christ.

  218. To believe God rewards good

  219. and punishes evil

  220. in the lives of his people

  221. now is simplistic.

  222. And it is not what the Bible teaches.

  223. But it is what many Christians believe today.

  224. I've been told that if only I had enough faith

  225. and prayed more,

  226. I could have healed all of my illnesses.

  227. I was in a wheelchair at one point

  228. and was told that I would be able to walk

  229. pain-free if only I asked for forgiveness

  230. and started living the proper Christian life.

  231. I've had friends.

  232. Friends who lost a child.

  233. And in the middle of that suffering,

  234. someone said to them,

  235. if only you'd had enough faith

  236. and prayed,

  237. that child would still be alive.

  238. Friends, that is a false gospel.

  239. And it puts all the responsibility

  240. on us.

  241. Weak human beings

  242. and not on the completed work

  243. of the ruling and reigning Jesus Christ.

  244. Now maybe you've said these things

  245. to people before.

  246. And if you have,

  247. I would encourage you to go

  248. and ask them for forgiveness

  249. and say,

  250. that's not what the Bible teaches.

  251. That's not what God is like.

  252. Because the only way

  253. we can get through this life

  254. is because of the hope

  255. that God gives us

  256. through the gospel.

  257. The life and death

  258. and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  259. Suffering is often the thing

  260. that causes us

  261. to come to the end of ourselves.

  262. And in that moment,

  263. we have to run towards God.

  264. The rest of the Bible says

  265. suffering is to be expected in life

  266. and that it has a purpose.

  267. It has a meaning.

  268. We may not know what that is.

  269. We may never know.

  270. But it is not meaningless.

  271. And Christians do not suffer now

  272. because God is punishing his people.

  273. So how has Bildad come

  274. to that conclusion?

  275. Well, as a traditionalist,

  276. he looks to the past.

  277. We see that in verse 8

  278. where he says to Job,

  279. ask the former generations

  280. and find out what their ancestors learned.

  281. For we were born only yesterday

  282. and know nothing

  283. and our days on earth

  284. are but a shadow.

  285. So the former generations

  286. and their apparent wisdom

  287. are the traditions of moral

  288. and religious people.

  289. Now learning from the past

  290. is not a bad thing.

  291. But the problem is

  292. that Bildad doesn't see

  293. that the wisdom of his ancestors

  294. is still imperfect.

  295. Just because something happened

  296. in the past

  297. doesn't mean that it is

  298. the wisest and best thing

  299. for all of time.

  300. But also,

  301. only looking back,

  302. as Bildad is telling Job to do,

  303. leaves no room for what God

  304. might be doing in the present.

  305. Bildad is too busy

  306. feeling like he needs

  307. to defend God's honour.

  308. So he comes up

  309. with the right answer

  310. that God is just

  311. but with the wrong conclusions.

  312. And to drive his point home,

  313. Bildad uses three illustrations.

  314. Plants in verses 11 to 13,

  315. a spider's web

  316. in verses 14 and 15

  317. and a shallow-rooted plant

  318. in verses 16 and 19.

  319. Bildad is saying

  320. that the wicked

  321. are those who put their trust

  322. in stuff

  323. rather than God.

  324. And like a spider's web,

  325. it is all fragile

  326. and it will collapse.

  327. Or that they are like flowers.

  328. The wicked are like flowers.

  329. That they have the appearance

  330. of life.

  331. But that their wickedness

  332. will lead to death.

  333. It's kind of like a bouquet of flowers

  334. that you buy from the shop

  335. and put on your dining room table.

  336. They look nice for a few days

  337. but they've been severed

  338. from their roots.

  339. And so,

  340. they are actually dead.

  341. And it will only take

  342. a few days

  343. for those signs of death

  344. to show themselves.

  345. That's like the wicked,

  346. Bildad says.

  347. And in verse 13,

  348. he says to Job,

  349. Job, basically,

  350. that's you.

  351. Everything that has been

  352. stripped away from you

  353. because you've forgotten God

  354. and because you're wicked.

  355. And so,

  356. with blow after blow,

  357. Bildad rains his attack

  358. on Job

  359. and he ends it in verses

  360. 20 to 22

  361. where he says,

  362. Surely God does not

  363. reject one who is blameless

  364. or strengthen the hands

  365. of evildoers.

  366. He will yet fill your mouth

  367. with laughter

  368. and your lips

  369. with shouts of joy.

  370. Your enemies will be

  371. clothed in shame

  372. and the tents of the wicked

  373. will be no more.

  374. Bildad says,

  375. Job,

  376. if only you were a good guy.

  377. If only you did

  378. what was right

  379. in front of God,

  380. none of this

  381. would be happening to you.

  382. These are words

  383. that wound.

  384. Words devoid

  385. of grace

  386. with no concept

  387. of undeserved suffering,

  388. no idea of suffering

  389. for God's glory

  390. and no concept

  391. of forgiveness.

  392. Job's suffering

  393. is not as black

  394. and white as that.

  395. We know

  396. that life

  397. is not as black

  398. and white as that.

  399. Even for those

  400. who have completely

  401. messed up

  402. and gone against God

  403. every single opportunity

  404. they can

  405. in their lives,

  406. there is still

  407. forgiveness

  408. and grace

  409. through Jesus Christ.

  410. let's never be

  411. those friends

  412. who pour more

  413. insults on open wounds

  414. without any godly wisdom

  415. because it misrepresents

  416. God

  417. and it hurts

  418. our friends.

  419. Half the time

  420. the reason people

  421. move churches

  422. is not because of

  423. theological

  424. differences

  425. but because of

  426. hurtful words

  427. of other Christians.

  428. Now we need

  429. to sit

  430. with those

  431. who are in pain.

  432. We should never

  433. assume

  434. we know

  435. the reason

  436. behind their

  437. suffering

  438. but we are

  439. to point them

  440. to the hope

  441. that is found

  442. in the gospel.

  443. The promised

  444. presence of God

  445. even in the trenches

  446. and midst

  447. of great suffering

  448. and we need

  449. to be that shoulder

  450. for people

  451. to cry on

  452. in their times

  453. of need.

  454. Bildad is arrogant

  455. and he thought

  456. that he knew

  457. what was going on.

  458. His words

  459. were daggers

  460. that were plunged

  461. into Job's heart

  462. inflicting pain

  463. and because

  464. Bildad wasn't

  465. suffering

  466. he thought

  467. he was wise

  468. and he had

  469. all the right answers.

  470. Friends,

  471. please never

  472. be a Bildad.

  473. Let's not be

  474. Bildad.

  475. Let's not assume

  476. we know everything

  477. but let's be patient

  478. with those

  479. who suffer

  480. and let us

  481. support them

  482. well.

  483. So Bildad

  484. spoke words

  485. that wound

  486. and the second

  487. thing we see

  488. in this passage

  489. are the words

  490. of the wounded

  491. in chapters 9

  492. and 10

  493. the words

  494. of the wounded.

  495. In the midst

  496. of great suffering

  497. we don't always

  498. say what we

  499. actually think

  500. right?

  501. So we may know

  502. that something

  503. is true

  504. but in that

  505. moment of agony

  506. logic seems

  507. to just go

  508. out the window.

  509. the pain

  510. is overbearing

  511. and the words

  512. that often

  513. leave our mouths

  514. without thinking

  515. it through

  516. properly

  517. is quite normal.

  518. What we say

  519. isn't always

  520. right

  521. and that is

  522. the same

  523. with Job.

  524. In these two

  525. chapters

  526. and in other

  527. parts of the book

  528. Job says

  529. things about

  530. God that

  531. aren't right

  532. and aren't

  533. true.

  534. But at the

  535. end of the book

  536. in Job

    Job 42:7

  537. chapter 42

  538. verse 7

  539. God commends

  540. Job for

  541. having spoken

  542. what is right.

  543. So how do we

  544. handle this

  545. apparent contradiction?

  546. Because God

  547. affirms in both

  548. the beginning

  549. and the end

  550. of the book

  551. of Job

  552. that he is

  553. a genuine

  554. believer.

  555. So this

  556. apparent

  557. contradiction

  558. can be resolved

  559. by understanding

  560. that whilst

  561. Job knows

  562. the truth

  563. about God

  564. and he

  565. believes the

  566. truth about

  567. God

  568. in the midst

  569. of his pain

  570. he doesn't

  571. feel it.

  572. And so he

  573. says wrong

  574. things about

  575. God and if

  576. you have

  577. suffered at

  578. all in

  579. your life

  580. you know

  581. how easy

  582. it is to

  583. be swept

  584. up in

  585. the feelings

  586. of pain

  587. and in

  588. the emotions

  589. of suffering.

  590. We might

  591. say that

  592. God is

  593. unloving

  594. that he

  595. has abandoned

  596. us even

  597. though that

  598. is not

  599. true.

  600. We might

  601. say that

  602. God doesn't

  603. care.

  604. because we

  605. don't

  606. understand

  607. what's

  608. going on.

  609. That's

  610. not true.

  611. We might

  612. even say

  613. that God

  614. doesn't

  615. love us

  616. because he

  617. is allowing

  618. such great

  619. suffering to

  620. happen in

  621. our lives.

  622. Friends,

  623. that is

  624. not

  625. true.

  626. You are

  627. never

  628. ever

  629. beyond

  630. the love

  631. of God.

  632. And in

  633. those moments

  634. of suffering

  635. we need to

  636. remember the

  637. truth about

  638. who God

  639. is and

  640. the truth

  641. that our

  642. circumstances,

  643. our pain,

  644. our suffering,

  645. our emotional

  646. and mental

  647. turmoil,

  648. our shame,

  649. our guilt,

  650. our feelings

  651. of despair

  652. are in no

  653. way,

  654. absolutely no

  655. way,

  656. a representation

  657. of how God

  658. views us.

  659. so let's

  660. listen to

  661. the words

  662. of the

  663. wounded.

  664. Read

  665. chapter 9

  666. verse 2

  667. with me.

  668. Job says,

  669. Indeed,

  670. I know

  671. that this

  672. is true,

  673. but how

  674. can me

  675. immortals

  676. prove their

  677. innocence

  678. before God?

  679. Though

  680. they wished

  681. to dispute

  682. with him,

  683. they could

  684. not answer

  685. him one

  686. time out

  687. of a

  688. thousand.

  689. Job

  690. says,

  691. I know

  692. that God

  693. is just.

  694. I know

  695. that he

  696. is right

  697. in all

  698. that he

  699. does.

  700. I know

  701. that the

  702. wicked

  703. receive

  704. judgment

  705. from God.

  706. I know

  707. that God

  708. is perfectly

  709. just.

  710. But what

  711. I don't

  712. know,

  713. Bildad,

  714. is why

  715. I'm

  716. suffering.

  717. And in

  718. these two

  719. chapters,

  720. Job uses

  721. courtroom

  722. language.

  723. He wants

  724. to take

  725. God to

  726. court,

  727. basically,

  728. to put

  729. him on

  730. the stand

  731. and ask

  732. his

  733. questions.

  734. Job

  735. wants to

  736. make a

  737. defense of

  738. his own

  739. innocence

  740. because he

  741. sees no

  742. sin in

  743. his life

  744. that

  745. deserves

  746. such

  747. great

  748. suffering.

  749. But he

  750. realizes that

  751. he cannot

  752. stand before

  753. God because

  754. God is so

  755. mighty.

  756. That's what

  757. verses 4 to

  758. 10 of

  759. chapter 9

  760. are all

  761. about.

  762. Speaking

  763. about God,

  764. Job says

  765. that he

  766. is wise

  767. in heart

  768. and mighty

  769. in strength

  770. in verse

  771. 4.

  772. That he

  773. can move

  774. mountains,

  775. verse 5.

  776. That he

  777. commands the

  778. sun in

  779. verse 7.

  780. That he

  781. put the

  782. stars in

  783. space in

  784. verse 9.

  785. Job is

  786. saying this

  787. is how

  788. big God

  789. is.

  790. No one

  791. can contend

  792. with him.

  793. He is so

  794. mighty that

  795. no amount

  796. of words

  797. could even

  798. scratch the

  799. surface of

  800. his greatness.

  801. He is so

  802. wise that

  803. all the

  804. wise people

  805. in the

  806. world

  807. couldn't

  808. even begin

  809. to compare

  810. to how

  811. wise God

  812. is.

  813. And God

  814. is beyond

  815. comprehension,

  816. Job says in

  817. verse 11.

  818. Now these

  819. verses in

  820. any other

  821. context would

  822. be a

  823. wonderful

  824. declaration

  825. of praise.

  826. And yet in

  827. this moment

  828. to Job

  829. it's a

  830. lament.

  831. Because he

  832. says,

  833. he thinks

  834. that this

  835. mighty,

  836. this powerful

  837. God has

  838. turned against

  839. him.

  840. Job is

  841. saying,

  842. how can I

  843. even dream

  844. of standing

  845. before this

  846. kind of God

  847. and question

  848. him?

  849. He is

  850. too

  851. great.

  852. And so he

  853. sits on the

  854. ash heap and

  855. as he looks

  856. over his

  857. life and

  858. his suffering

  859. he's crying

  860. out and

  861. he's asking

  862. why?

  863. Why has

  864. this great

  865. powerful God

  866. turned

  867. against me?

  868. Job then

  869. wrongly

  870. concludes in

  871. verses 12

  872. to 21 of

  873. chapter 9

  874. that God

  875. is unjust.

  876. In the

  877. midst of

  878. his

  879. suffering

  880. Job is

  881. coming to

  882. the wrong

  883. conclusions

  884. because he

  885. doesn't see

  886. how his

  887. suffering could

  888. bring him

  889. any good.

  890. He knows

  891. that he

  892. is innocent

  893. and yet he

  894. says in

  895. verse 20

  896. that even

  897. if he is

  898. innocent God

  899. would pronounce

  900. him guilty

  901. anyway.

  902. And it

  903. brings Job

  904. to the point

  905. of despair

  906. and he

  907. despises

  908. his life.

  909. And the

  910. lament continues

  911. in chapter 10.

  912. Job's

  913. friends have

  914. basically been

  915. telling him

  916. to fake it

  917. until you

  918. make it.

  919. Slap a fake

  920. smile in your

  921. face and get

  922. on with life.

  923. And so Job

  924. says in

  925. chapter 10

  926. verse 1

  927. I loathe

  928. my very

  929. life.

  930. Therefore

  931. I will give

  932. free reign

  933. to my

  934. complaint and

  935. speak out

  936. in the

  937. bitterness of

  938. my soul.

  939. And I

  940. say to

  941. God do

  942. not declare

  943. me guilty

  944. but tell

  945. me what

  946. charges you

  947. have against

  948. me.

  949. Tell me

  950. why?

  951. Does it

  952. please you

  953. to oppress

  954. me, to

  955. spurn the

  956. works of

  957. your hands

  958. while you

  959. smile on

  960. the plans

  961. of the

  962. wicked?

  963. Job doesn't

  964. see what's

  965. going on.

  966. He knows

  967. that God

  968. is just

  969. but his

  970. situation

  971. is sending

  972. him into

  973. a spiral

  974. of confusion.

  975. In

  976. verses 8

  977. to 12

  978. Job speaks

  979. about how

  980. he is one

  981. of God's

  982. creations.

  983. Verse 11

  984. you clothe

  985. me with

  986. skin and

  987. flesh.

  988. You have

  989. granted me

  990. life and

  991. steadfast love.

  992. Verse 12

  993. So why,

  994. why am I

  995. suffering?

  996. Verses 13

  997. to 17

  998. Job says

  999. if it's

  1000. because I've

  1001. sinned and

  1002. I'm deserving

  1003. of this agony

  1004. reveal it to

  1005. me.

  1006. Show me

  1007. what I have

  1008. done.

  1009. Show me

  1010. your evidence.

  1011. Bring it

  1012. to the

  1013. courtroom and

  1014. let's chat

  1015. it out

  1016. together.

  1017. Let's sort

  1018. it out.

  1019. But he

  1020. sees no

  1021. sense and

  1022. he loathes

  1023. his life.

  1024. So he

  1025. says in

  1026. verse 18

  1027. of chapter

  1028. 10,

  1029. why then

  1030. did you

  1031. bring me

  1032. out of

  1033. the womb?

  1034. I wish

  1035. that I

  1036. had died

  1037. before any

  1038. eye saw

  1039. me.

  1040. If only

  1041. I had

  1042. never gone,

  1043. never come

  1044. into being,

  1045. or had

  1046. been carried

  1047. straight from

  1048. the womb

  1049. to the

  1050. grave.

  1051. Are not

  1052. my few

  1053. days almost

  1054. over?

  1055. Turn away

  1056. from me

  1057. so that I

  1058. can have a

  1059. moment's joy

  1060. before I

  1061. go to the

  1062. place of

  1063. no return,

  1064. to the

  1065. land of

  1066. gloom and

  1067. utter

  1068. darkness.

  1069. Job says,

  1070. God,

  1071. leave me

  1072. alone.

  1073. Give me

  1074. a few

  1075. minutes of

  1076. rest before

  1077. I breathe

  1078. my last

  1079. and enter

  1080. into an

  1081. eternity of

  1082. darkness and

  1083. despair.

  1084. In his

  1085. suffering,

  1086. Job has

  1087. lost all

  1088. hope of

  1089. eternity with

  1090. God.

  1091. God,

  1092. he can't

  1093. see the

  1094. hope for

  1095. all the

  1096. despair in

  1097. his life.

  1098. Job is

  1099. consumed with

  1100. the question

  1101. why.

  1102. Friends,

  1103. have you

  1104. been there?

  1105. That place

  1106. where you're

  1107. looking at the

  1108. situation around

  1109. you and you're

  1110. consumed by it

  1111. and you see

  1112. no hope,

  1113. is the

  1114. question of

  1115. why eating

  1116. you alive and

  1117. all you want to

  1118. do is scream

  1119. it out?

  1120. There is

  1121. nothing wrong

  1122. with voicing

  1123. your frustrations.

  1124. There is

  1125. nothing wrong

  1126. with asking

  1127. the hard

  1128. questions.

  1129. They are

  1130. not a

  1131. sign of

  1132. unfaithfulness.

  1133. They are

  1134. not a

  1135. sign of

  1136. doubting

  1137. God.

  1138. It is a

  1139. sign that

  1140. you are

  1141. genuinely

  1142. wrestling with

  1143. the situation

  1144. and you want

  1145. to understand

  1146. what God's

  1147. doing.

  1148. That is a

  1149. good thing.

  1150. but you

  1151. need to know

  1152. that the

  1153. answers may

  1154. never come.

  1155. We may

  1156. never truly

  1157. understand what

  1158. is going on

  1159. but regardless

  1160. of the outcome

  1161. God never

  1162. changes.

  1163. God is

  1164. good.

  1165. God is

  1166. faithful.

  1167. And in the

  1168. midst of

  1169. suffering it

  1170. is important

  1171. to keep on

  1172. talking to

  1173. God.

  1174. Do not

  1175. shut him

  1176. out.

  1177. keep on

  1178. asking for

  1179. the suffering

  1180. to be

  1181. gone.

  1182. Keep on

  1183. asking for

  1184. strength.

  1185. Keep

  1186. listening.

  1187. God is

  1188. listening.

  1189. He has

  1190. not

  1191. abandoned

  1192. you.

  1193. Talking

  1194. to him

  1195. in the

  1196. midst of

  1197. great

  1198. pain

  1199. is

  1200. important.

  1201. And to

  1202. accuse God

  1203. of being

  1204. unjust

  1205. means that

  1206. we think

  1207. God owes

  1208. us a

  1209. good life.

  1210. A life

  1211. of joy

  1212. and happiness

  1213. all the

  1214. time that

  1215. it's

  1216. unfair for

  1217. any kind

  1218. of suffering

  1219. to come

  1220. our way.

  1221. But the

  1222. book of

  1223. Job isn't

  1224. here to

  1225. tell us

  1226. that life

  1227. is fair.

  1228. It's

  1229. here to

  1230. tell us

  1231. that even

  1232. in this

  1233. extreme

  1234. suffering

  1235. God is

  1236. good.

  1237. God is

  1238. sovereign.

  1239. God is

  1240. wise and

  1241. God is

  1242. 100%

  1243. just.

  1244. So friends

  1245. in your

  1246. pain ask

  1247. the hard

  1248. questions.

  1249. God is

  1250. God is

  1251. God is

  1252. God's

  1253. love for

  1254. or approval

  1255. of you.

  1256. There is

  1257. nothing you

  1258. can do

  1259. to stop

  1260. you being

  1261. his child.

  1262. Job saw

  1263. this mighty

  1264. awesomeness

  1265. wisdom and

  1266. power of

  1267. God and

  1268. declares that

  1269. it is impossible

  1270. to stand

  1271. before him.

  1272. in chapter

  1273. 9 verse

  1274. 2 he

  1275. says how

  1276. can a

  1277. man be

  1278. in the

  1279. right before

  1280. God?

  1281. In chapter

  1282. 9 verse

  1283. 33 he

  1284. cries out in

  1285. frustration if

  1286. only there

  1287. was someone

  1288. to mediate

  1289. between us.

  1290. If only

  1291. there was

  1292. someone who

  1293. could bring

  1294. us together.

  1295. If only

  1296. there was

  1297. one who

  1298. could

  1299. plead my

  1300. cause before

  1301. this holy

  1302. God.

  1303. Brothers and

  1304. sisters we

  1305. have that

  1306. mediator.

  1307. we have

  1308. that person

  1309. who is

  1310. perfect,

  1311. who is

  1312. righteous,

  1313. who is

  1314. fully God

  1315. and fully

  1316. man.

  1317. The only

  1318. one who

  1319. can stand

  1320. before a

  1321. holy God

  1322. on our

  1323. behalf.

  1324. We have

  1325. Jesus.

  1326. We have

  1327. a mediator

  1328. who stands

  1329. before God

  1330. and when

  1331. Satan the

  1332. accuser comes

  1333. with his

  1334. list of

  1335. sins that

  1336. we commit

  1337. every single

  1338. day and

  1339. he says

  1340. look at

  1341. Alistair

  1342. God,

  1343. the greatest

  1344. sinner of

  1345. them all,

  1346. Jesus says

  1347. paid for.

  1348. Jesus says

  1349. God the

  1350. curse of

  1351. your righteous

  1352. wrath that

  1353. Alistair

  1354. deserves

  1355. was taken

  1356. on me as

  1357. I hung on

  1358. that cross.

  1359. And so

  1360. Satan's

  1361. accusations

  1362. are muted

  1363. because

  1364. Jesus wins.

  1365. Job thinks

  1366. that he needs

  1367. a mediator

  1368. because in

  1369. this moment

  1370. he is not

  1371. seeing the

  1372. whole picture.

  1373. He's standing

  1374. at the back

  1375. of the

  1376. tapestry

  1377. seeing all

  1378. the chaos

  1379. and all

  1380. the mess,

  1381. all the

  1382. cords leading

  1383. nowhere and

  1384. it makes no

  1385. sense.

  1386. But God

  1387. is the good

  1388. and loving

  1389. father who

  1390. stands at

  1391. the front of

  1392. the tapestry.

  1393. He sees

  1394. the whole

  1395. picture and

  1396. he is in

  1397. control.

  1398. God is

  1399. weaving a

  1400. glorious picture

  1401. in your life

  1402. that we don't

  1403. see yet.

  1404. We don't

  1405. fully understand

  1406. and we may

  1407. never comprehend

  1408. it in this

  1409. life but

  1410. we are in

  1411. the hands

  1412. of a good

  1413. God.

  1414. Jesus is

  1415. the perfect

  1416. mediator who

  1417. being fully

  1418. God stepped

  1419. in and took

  1420. the ultimate

  1421. suffering that

  1422. we deserve.

  1423. Friends,

  1424. this is the

  1425. mediator that

  1426. Job wanted.

  1427. This is the

  1428. mediator that

  1429. we have.

  1430. And in the

  1431. middle of

  1432. suffering,

  1433. in the middle

  1434. of the open

  1435. wounds and

  1436. the agony,

  1437. in the middle

  1438. of despair

  1439. and the

  1440. emotional,

  1441. physical,

  1442. mental pain,

  1443. do not

  1444. forget Jesus

  1445. Christ who

  1446. bridged the

  1447. gap between

  1448. you and

  1449. God.

  1450. Jesus,

  1451. God in the

  1452. flesh,

  1453. stepped into

  1454. our suffering

  1455. world,

  1456. took on

  1457. suffering

  1458. himself

  1459. so that

  1460. we may be

  1461. reunited with

  1462. God and

  1463. have eternal

  1464. hope where

  1465. suffering,

  1466. sin and

  1467. death are

  1468. no more.

  1469. Sticks and

  1470. stones may

  1471. break my

  1472. bones but

  1473. words will

  1474. never hurt

  1475. me is

  1476. nonsense.

  1477. words matter.

  1478. The words

  1479. we hear in

  1480. our suffering

  1481. matter, the

  1482. words we

  1483. say in

  1484. our suffering

  1485. matter.

  1486. But the

  1487. most important

  1488. words that

  1489. you must

  1490. remember as

  1491. you're in the

  1492. trenches in the

  1493. despair of

  1494. suffering is

  1495. the cry of

  1496. Jesus Christ

  1497. on the cross

  1498. as he said,

  1499. it is

  1500. finished.

  1501. that is the

  1502. comfort that

  1503. you need in

  1504. your suffering.

  1505. That is

  1506. that there is

  1507. an end to

  1508. it all because

  1509. Jesus paid

  1510. it all.

  1511. Jesus paid

  1512. it all,

  1513. all to him

  1514. I owe.

  1515. Sin had

  1516. left a

  1517. crimson stain

  1518. and he

  1519. washed it

  1520. white as

  1521. snow.

  1522. And when

  1523. before the

  1524. throne I

  1525. stand,

  1526. in him

  1527. complete,

  1528. Jesus died

  1529. my soul

  1530. to save,

  1531. my lips

  1532. shall still

  1533. repeat.

  1534. Jesus paid

  1535. it all.

  1536. Let's pray

  1537. together.

  1538. Father, we

  1539. come before

  1540. you and we

  1541. ask that in

  1542. the good

  1543. times and

  1544. the bad,

  1545. in the

  1546. joys and

  1547. happiness of

  1548. life and

  1549. in the

  1550. sorrows and

  1551. despair of

  1552. suffering and

  1553. turmoil,

  1554. would you

  1555. by your

  1556. spirit help

  1557. us remember

  1558. the wonderful

  1559. truths of

  1560. who you

  1561. are.

  1562. And

  1563. Father, if

  1564. there is

  1565. anyone here

  1566. in the

  1567. building or

  1568. listening at

  1569. home who

  1570. thinks that

  1571. their

  1572. circumstances

  1573. are a

  1574. representation

  1575. of your

  1576. love for

  1577. them,

  1578. Lord, I

  1579. ask that by

  1580. the power of

  1581. the spirit you

  1582. would transform

  1583. their minds,

  1584. that you

  1585. would help

  1586. them cling to

  1587. that wonderful

  1588. truth that

  1589. Jesus has

  1590. paid it all

  1591. and it is

  1592. only through

  1593. him that

  1594. we can stand

  1595. boldly and

  1596. declare that

  1597. we belong to

  1598. you, that

  1599. we are part of

  1600. your family

  1601. because of

  1602. Christ.

  1603. Father,

  1604. remind us of

  1605. those truths in

  1606. the difficulties

  1607. of life.

  1608. we ask

  1609. this in

  1610. Jesus'

  1611. holy and

  1612. precious name.

  1613. Amen.
