  1. It was very kind of Ian to include me amongst the young preachers.

  2. I could probably double the rage in some of them.

  3. Thank you for giving me the privilege of sharing God's Word tonight with you this evening.

  4. Thank you also for extending to me the courtesy of allowing me to sit to speak.

  5. Unfortunately, I have back trouble and that prevents me from standing for very long.

  6. So it would be a very short sermon if I did.

  7. That might be an option you wish you had taken later.

  8. Just a quick prayer.

  9. Father, as we turn to your Word, may your Holy Spirit take it and comfort us where we need to be comforted.

  10. Encourage us where we need to be encouraged.

  11. And challenge us where we need to be challenged.

  12. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  13. Can I ask you to take your Bibles please and open them at James chapter 5 as we continue our series in that book.

    James 5 chapter mention

  14. Reading verses 7 to 12.

  15. So that's James chapter 5, verses 7 to 12.

    James 5:7–12

  16. This is the Word of God.

  17. Be patient then, brothers, until the Lord's coming.

  18. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop.

  19. How patient he is in the autumn and spring rains.

  20. Brothers, you too, be patient and stand firm.

  21. Because the Lord's coming is near.

  22. Don't grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged.

  23. The judge is standing at the door.

  24. Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering.

  25. Take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

  26. As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered.

  27. You've heard of Job's perseverance.

  28. And have seen what the Lord finally brought about.

  29. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

  30. Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or by earth or by anything else.

  31. Let your yes be yes and your no be no.

  32. Or you will be condemned.

  33. Amen.

  34. When I was a lad, and that wasn't yesterday,

  35. the only phone we had in the house was in the hall.

  36. And it was attached by a cord to the wall, to a box in the wall.

  37. It sat on a telephone table, especially because...

  38. And it had a seat as a part of its construction.

  39. Where you sat and made your calls.

  40. If the person you were calling was not in, or was engaged in another call,

  41. you simply called them back later.

  42. It was a major step forward in technology when we got an answering machine.

  43. The nearest thing to a mobile phone was the call box at the end of most streets.

  44. Today, the majority of us probably carry one of these.

  45. With it, we can call, message, and send emails all over the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  46. If you're anything like me, then when, for example, I send a WhatsApp message,

  47. and the message has been...

  48. There's a marker there that shows that the message has been delivered.

  49. And then it changes colour when the person, the recipient, has read it.

  50. Impatience then builds as I wait for the person to respond.

  51. The patience levels of our society have plummeted,

  52. and we live in a world demanding instant responses.

  53. During this period of lockdown, forcing many of us to work from home,

  54. one of the partners in the firm I work for found it necessary to send out an instruction to all staff

  55. saying that we were no longer allowed to use ASAP, i.e. as soon as possible,

  56. on any of our emails or Teams messages,

  57. and we had to start showing an increased level of patience.

  58. So as we study this passage in James chapter 5,

    James 5 chapter mention

  59. God calls us, especially those within his church,

  60. to a life of patience in that world of urgency.

  61. Our key verse is found at verse 7,

  62. when it says,

  63. Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming.

  64. So I'd like us to consider this passage under three headings.

  65. First, faithful patience.

  66. Secondly, obedient patience.

  67. Thirdly, fulfilled patience.

  68. That's faithful patience.

  69. Obedient patience.

  70. Fulfilled patience.

  71. So faithful patience.

  72. In verse 7, we are given the example of the farmer.

  73. He will have lovingly prepared the soil,

  74. ploughing it, removing all possible stones and weeds

  75. to ensure it gives the best environment possible for the seed to flourish.

  76. He will then have planted the best seed available to him,

  77. but, and that's a big but,

  78. he is powerless in making that seed germinate and produce a crop.

  79. For that, he looks upwards in faith to his heavenly Father

  80. to bring the rains, and hopefully the sunshine,

  81. to allow that seed to grow and mature.

  82. Is that a blind faith?

  83. No.

  84. As a farmer in New Testament times,

  85. he will have known the Old Testament promises of God,

  86. including those in Isaiah 55 that talk about God bringing the rains.

  87. Like most farmers of his day,

  88. he will be totally reliant on that crop

  89. to provide for his family for the coming year,

  90. and therefore his faith is absolute in God

  91. as he waits in expectation for what will happen later that year.

  92. We are then in verses 10 to 12,

  93. given the examples of Job and a number of the Old Testament prophets.

  94. The patience of Job is an expression that's used in our world today.

  95. If you Google it,

  96. the dictionary definition is

  97. the ability to remain patient

  98. and do what you think you should do

  99. despite having many problems.

  100. Unfortunately, the dictionary has totally missed the point.

  101. As we've been discovering in our Sunday morning series,

  102. Job's patience and perseverance

  103. is rooted not in a self-reliance

  104. or the stiff upper lip

  105. to keep going through adversity,

  106. but has its foundations

  107. built on that rock that is God.

  108. It's his faith and knowledge

  109. and the promise that God would never forsake him

  110. that sees him through this period of trial and tribulation.

  111. Job may have voiced complaints about his circumstances,

  112. but he did not stop trusting and putting his faith in God.

  113. Job 1.21, for example, says,

  114. Naked I have come from my mother's womb,

  115. and naked I will depart.

  116. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away.

  117. May the name of the Lord be praised.

  118. The farmer Job and the other prophets referred to

  119. took God at his word

  120. and found him to be faithful.

  121. We have God's word

  122. in the form of our Bibles

  123. and that is full of his promises

  124. and that we can cling to

  125. and put our faith in

  126. as we live our lives.

  127. In some senses,

  128. we have it relatively easy

  129. in this country

  130. compared to the difficulties

  131. many of our brothers and sisters

  132. around the world face.

  133. Increasingly, however,

  134. there are battles to face

  135. and thankfully the Lord

  136. has blessed the Christian community

  137. in this country recently

  138. with some significant victories.

  139. There's a case of the advertising

  140. for the Festival of Hope Christian event

  141. in Lancashire

  142. where Franklin Graham,

  143. son of Billy Graham,

  144. was to be the headline speaker.

  145. As a result of his views

  146. on biblical marriage,

  147. the local council banned

  148. the adverts for the event

  149. from their buses.

  150. Recently, a court

  151. found that the Christian organizers

  152. of the event

  153. had been unfairly discriminated against

  154. and ordered the council

  155. to pay over £100,000 in damages.

  156. Similarly, the case of the elder

  157. in Stirling Free Church

  158. who is the chief executive officer

  159. of the Robertson Trust

  160. was sacked after nine years at the helm.

  161. An industrial tribunal found

  162. that he had been unlawfully

  163. discriminated against

  164. and again because of his

  165. Christian views on marriage.

  166. Job and the prophets

  167. such as Elijah and Daniel

  168. stood firm in the face of testing.

  169. And in verse 8,

  170. we are called to do likewise

  171. when it says,

  172. you too be patient

  173. and stand firm

  174. because the Lord's coming

  175. is near.

  176. Are there situations

  177. we are going through at work

  178. or in our personal lives

  179. that we are tempted

  180. to throw in the towel?

  181. We're encouraged here

  182. to look to our Heavenly Father

  183. in faith,

  184. in the knowledge

  185. that he's always there

  186. and he will carry us through

  187. the trial we're going through

  188. just as he did with Job

  189. and the other prophets.

  190. So secondly,

  191. we have obedient patience.

  192. Verse 7 says,

  193. be patient.

  194. This is not a request

  195. or an optional extra.

  196. This is a command,

  197. firstly for us

  198. as a body of believers,

  199. but subsequently for us

  200. to be a shining example

  201. to our communities

  202. outside these four walls.

  203. The world we live in

  204. has increasingly become

  205. a place that seeks

  206. instant gratification.

  207. This can be quite innocently

  208. things like instant coffee

  209. or that instant meal

  210. we zap in the microwave.

  211. However,

  212. I doubt that many

  213. would say that

  214. an instant coffee

  215. trumps the freshly brewed

  216. version

  217. or a ready meal

  218. tastes as good

  219. as one lovingly prepared

  220. from scratch

  221. by a talented cook or chef.

  222. As the world

  223. turns its back

  224. on its creator,

  225. it tries to short circuit

  226. God's plans

  227. and aims to scratch

  228. where it itches.

  229. There's a desire

  230. for sex

  231. without patiently

  232. waiting for the

  233. God-given relationship

  234. of marriage,

  235. the rise in casual

  236. relationships

  237. and the increased

  238. availability and use

  239. of pornography

  240. bringing with it

  241. a big impact

  242. on our society.

  243. There's the desire

  244. to have the latest

  245. and the best

  246. right now

  247. even if we can't

  248. afford it.

  249. This has given rise

  250. to a huge debt problem

  251. and people

  252. attempt to keep up

  253. with the Joneses.

  254. But many have turned

  255. to serious gambling

  256. in this respect

  257. to satisfy their

  258. discontentment

  259. with their present

  260. position.

  261. Our TV screens

  262. are full of adverts

  263. attempting to

  264. reel vulnerable

  265. people in.

  266. God would say to us

  267. to be content

  268. with what we have

  269. and patiently work

  270. with what we'd like

  271. to achieve.

  272. However,

  273. in our passages,

  274. we as God's people

  275. are given two

  276. very specific areas

  277. to live out

  278. obedient patience.

  279. In verse 9

  280. it says,

  281. don't grumble

  282. against each other

  283. brothers

  284. or you will be judged.

  285. The judge

  286. is standing

  287. at the door.

  288. Why would there

  289. be grumbling

  290. amongst us?

  291. I would suggest

  292. it arises

  293. when we lose

  294. patience with one

  295. another.

  296. It leads us

  297. to putting ourselves

  298. on that pedestal

  299. rising us up there

  300. as we look down

  301. on our brothers

  302. or sister.

  303. It can be very

  304. easy to point

  305. the finger

  306. at somebody

  307. at someone's

  308. perceived shortcomings

  309. but we do not

  310. always know

  311. the full story

  312. of what they're

  313. going through.

  314. I read an

  315. interesting article

  316. recently that

  317. highlighted the fact

  318. that if you

  319. physically point

  320. the finger

  321. at somebody

  322. then three fingers

  323. of your same hand

  324. are pointing

  325. right back at you.

  326. Think about it.

  327. Try it.

  328. The second half

  329. of verse 9

  330. warns us

  331. that if we go

  332. about judging

  333. one another

  334. then we face

  335. a judgment

  336. from God.

  337. Our command

  338. is not to grumble

  339. but I believe

  340. that that

  341. should be evident

  342. in the way

  343. that we do

  344. the opposite

  345. and treat each

  346. other with

  347. compassion

  348. and mercy

  349. just so

  350. as God

  351. treats each

  352. one of us.

  353. Secondly

  354. in verse 12

  355. there's a command

  356. about our speech.

  357. Above all

  358. my brothers

  359. do not swear

  360. by heaven

  361. or by earth

  362. or by anything

  363. else.

  364. Let your yes

  365. be yes

  366. and your no

  367. no

  368. or you will

  369. be condemned.

  370. What we say

  371. and how we say

  372. it

  373. has been a

  374. common thread

  375. through the book

  376. of James

  377. so far.

  378. This parallels

  379. with Jesus'

  380. words in Matthew

  381. 5

  382. 34 to 37

  383. and I encourage

  384. you to check

  385. these verses

  386. out at your

  387. leisure.

  388. oaths in

  389. this context

  390. were often

  391. used to

  392. sound impressive

  393. to puff

  394. somebody up

  395. and give

  396. the impression

  397. of truth.

  398. However

  399. the honesty

  400. of these oaths

  401. was often

  402. questionable.

  403. James is

  404. therefore telling

  405. us that we

  406. should have

  407. no part

  408. in that

  409. practice.

  410. We are to

  411. be people

  412. of integrity

  413. and what we

  414. say should

  415. be honest

  416. and trustworthy.

  417. As part

  418. of God's

  419. family

  420. is our

  421. word

  422. our bond.

  423. Are we

  424. totally honest

  425. in all our

  426. dealings

  427. when around

  428. us

  429. others

  430. venture

  431. into those

  432. grey areas

  433. of truth?

  434. An added

  435. dimension is

  436. often found

  437. that when

  438. we have

  439. lost our

  440. patience

  441. with someone

  442. or in some

  443. situation

  444. we become

  445. exasperated

  446. and we lose

  447. self-control.

  448. This is

  449. evident to

  450. those

  451. around us

  452. when we

  453. come out

  454. with some

  455. form of

  456. expletive.

  457. Consistent

  458. with the rest

  459. of scripture

  460. God is

  461. calling us

  462. to exercise

  463. self-control

  464. and bring

  465. the situation

  466. that's causing

  467. us stress

  468. to him

  469. in prayer

  470. and let him

  471. deal with it.

  472. So we've

  473. got faithful

  474. patience

  475. patience

  476. and got

  477. obedient

  478. patience

  479. and thirdly

  480. fulfilled

  481. patience.

  482. For the

  483. farmer

  484. fulfilled

  485. patience

  486. is seen

  487. in a crop

  488. to be

  489. harvested

  490. and provide

  491. for his

  492. family

  493. over the

  494. coming year.

  495. For Job

  496. it was an

  497. end to

  498. that period

  499. of testing

  500. and a

  501. restoration

  502. of God's

  503. blessing.

  504. For many

  505. going through

  506. suffering

  507. the fulfillment

  508. of their

  509. patience

  510. may not

  511. be seen

  512. in these

  513. earthly

  514. lives

  515. but when

  516. they are

  517. called

  518. home

  519. by God.

  520. For me

  521. personally

  522. I can

  523. honestly say

  524. that I

  525. had a real

  526. sense of

  527. joy

  528. at both

  529. the funerals

  530. of my

  531. dad

  532. and the

  533. more recently

  534. my mum.

  535. Yes for me

  536. there was a

  537. deep

  538. grieving

  539. and a real

  540. sense of

  541. loss

  542. but I

  543. realised

  544. for them

  545. for both

  546. of them

  547. that they

  548. had been

  549. released

  550. from the

  551. suffering

  552. that they

  553. had

  554. increasingly

  555. been

  556. experiencing

  557. as their

  558. earthly

  559. bodies

  560. deteriorated

  561. and now

  562. we're in

  563. the presence

  564. of their

  565. Lord and

  566. Saviour

  567. which was

  568. better by

  569. far.

  570. I'm sure

  571. many here

  572. can echo

  573. that experience.

  574. Verse 7

  575. commands us

  576. to be

  577. patient

  578. until the

  579. Lord's

  580. coming

  581. which means

  582. there is a

  583. finite point

  584. in time

  585. when God

  586. is going to

  587. make all

  588. things right

  589. it will be

  590. a total

  591. game changer

  592. but the

  593. Lord has

  594. already been

  595. and when

  596. he came

  597. the first

  598. time he

  599. was the

  600. greatest

  601. fulfilment

  602. of patience

  603. this world

  604. has ever

  605. seen.

  606. Looking back

  607. at our

  608. studies in

  609. the book

  610. of Leviticus

  611. earlier this

  612. year we

  613. learnt that

  614. the ordained

  615. access into

  616. God's

  617. presence was

  618. once a

  619. year by

  620. one man

  621. the high

  622. priest and

  623. on the

  624. appointed

  625. day he

  626. went behind

  627. the curtain

  628. into the

  629. temple with

  630. the blood

  631. of a

  632. sacrificed

  633. animal and

  634. offered it

  635. as a

  636. sin offering

  637. on behalf

  638. of the

  639. people.

  640. On that

  641. first Good

  642. Friday when

  643. Jesus was

  644. crucified on

  645. that cross

  646. at Calvary

  647. and exclaimed

  648. it is

  649. finished

  650. the curtain

  651. in the

  652. temple was

  653. torn from

  654. top to

  655. bottom

  656. giving

  657. access

  658. into

  659. God's

  660. presence

  661. to all

  662. who are

  663. willing to

  664. repent

  665. and believe.

  666. The access

  667. is not there

  668. just once a

  669. year but

  670. every hour

  671. of every

  672. day wherever

  673. we are.

  674. When Jesus

  675. returns as

  676. described in

  677. verse 7

  678. it won't be

  679. as a baby

  680. in a manger

  681. but it will

  682. be in all

  683. his glory

  684. and majesty

  685. it will be

  686. both a

  687. fearful day

  688. and a

  689. day of

  690. great joy

  691. fearful

  692. because it

  693. will be a

  694. day of

  695. judgment

  696. and

  697. accountability

  698. joyful

  699. for those

  700. who are

  701. in Christ

  702. that they

  703. will go

  704. and spend

  705. eternity

  706. in the

  707. presence of

  708. God.

  709. We live

  710. today in

  711. a period

  712. of God's

  713. patience

  714. between the

  715. first coming

  716. of Jesus

  717. and his

  718. return.

  719. for all

  720. of us

  721. today

  722. that has

  723. critical

  724. significance.

  725. For the

  726. believer

  727. who has

  728. already

  729. come in

  730. repentance

  731. and put

  732. our trust

  733. in Jesus

  734. the Savior

  735. and Lord

  736. we are

  737. firstly

  738. commanded to

  739. live our

  740. lives with

  741. evident

  742. patience.

  743. Borrowing a

  744. phrase from a

  745. preacher I

  746. heard recently

  747. we are to

  748. follow the

  749. compass and

  750. not the

  751. clock.

  752. Follow the

  753. compass and

  754. not the

  755. clock.

  756. In other

  757. words live

  758. faithfully in

  759. accordance with

  760. the direction

  761. of God's

  762. word whilst

  763. leaving the

  764. timing of

  765. our circumstances

  766. in God's

  767. hands.

  768. Following on

  769. from that we

  770. have been

  771. given the

  772. privilege of

  773. sharing the

  774. good news of

  775. the gospel to

  776. the world

  777. outside these

  778. walls that

  779. desperately needs

  780. to hear it.

  781. Like the

  782. farmer we

  783. can prepare the

  784. soil in our

  785. friends and

  786. relatives and

  787. help them to

  788. remove some

  789. of the weeds

  790. and stones of

  791. issues that

  792. may be a

  793. hindrance.

  794. We can plant

  795. the seed by

  796. introducing them

  797. to Jesus but

  798. just as the

  799. farmer had to

  800. look to his

  801. heavenly father

  802. to provide the

  803. weather to make

  804. the seed germinate

  805. and grow, we

  806. too are totally

  807. reliant on God

  808. through the Holy

  809. Spirit to work a

  810. miracle in the

  811. lives of those

  812. we are seeking

  813. to reach out

  814. to.

  815. We wait

  816. patiently for

  817. the Lord.

  818. Our time on

  819. this earth is

  820. short and

  821. temporary and

  822. it's not our

  823. forever home so

  824. let's not get

  825. too comfortable.

  826. if you may be

  827. here today or

  828. tonight and

  829. you've not yet

  830. put your trust

  831. in Jesus as

  832. your Saviour

  833. and Lord

  834. then this passage

  835. comes with a

  836. warning.

  837. God has an

  838. appointed time

  839. when his son

  840. the Lord Jesus

  841. will return in

  842. all his glory

  843. and as I said

  844. earlier it will

  845. be a day of

  846. judgment and

  847. accountability.

  848. None of us

  849. know when that

  850. will happen.

  851. It could be

  852. tomorrow or it

  853. might be a

  854. considerable time

  855. yet.

  856. The important

  857. point is until

  858. that happens

  859. there is still

  860. an opportunity

  861. to respond and

  862. accept the

  863. gift of a

  864. restored relationship

  865. with God

  866. through what

  867. Jesus accomplished

  868. in his death

  869. and resurrection.

  870. If you're in

  871. that position

  872. tonight then

  873. can I please

  874. urge you to

  875. take time out

  876. to consider the

  877. gift of eternal

  878. life that Jesus

  879. offers you.

  880. Don't put it

  881. in the back

  882. burner of your

  883. life.

  884. If you want to

  885. talk further

  886. then please

  887. come speak to

  888. me or speak

  889. to one of the

  890. leaders of this

  891. church or the

  892. person that's

  893. brought you

  894. along tonight.

  895. Let's pray.

  896. Father I just

  897. thank you for

  898. this passage

  899. from scripture.

  900. I thank you for

  901. what you've been

  902. saying to us

  903. and may Lord

  904. by your Holy

  905. Spirit cement in

  906. our hearts

  907. what's the

  908. application of it

  909. to our lives.

  910. We pray in

  911. Jesus name.

  912. Amen.

  913. Thank you.
