  1. Great. Well, it's a privilege to be here this evening and I'd just like to extend again a warm welcome to you all.

  2. Let me just pray for us as we begin.

  3. God and Father, we thank you that we can meet freely in this country in public and can read your word and can study it.

  4. And we just ask your blessing on it and pray that you'll speak to each one of us.

  5. We pray all this in the name of the Lord Jesus. Amen.

  6. So thank you to Andrew Neller for reading for us.

  7. So we are in Isaiah chapters 28 and 29.

    Isaiah 28 chapter mention

  8. It would be great if you could have it open as we'll be referring to it throughout.

  9. So just as a way of a catch up or an introduction, I'm not sure if you've been following along,

  10. whether you've been in the other series in this, but we're in Isaiah.

  11. So we are about 700 BC. That is the timeline we're at.

  12. The nation of Israel is split into the two kingdoms.

  13. We have the north or Israel.

  14. And in here it is referred to as Ephraim.

  15. Well, it is the capital Samaria that is the focus.

  16. And in the south, we have Judah and we have the capital Jerusalem,

  17. which is called Ariel in this passage.

  18. And Isaiah, you know, he is speaking in this book to the covenant people of God.

  19. He is speaking to the line of Abraham, to God's people.

  20. And, you know, tonight we're going to see a snapshot into what this nation is all about.

  21. You know, it was my cousin's wedding the other week and I was asked to,

  22. she got married 18 months ago, but this was the ceremony.

  23. And I was asked to do a slideshow of our wedding photos for the event.

  24. And, you know, we weren't there, but we got this real insight into what the day was like.

  25. We could see the joy in their faces.

  26. We could see what went on.

  27. And that is what we will have tonight.

  28. We will see this snapshot into the state of the nation.

  29. We see God's people, they are just going through the motions.

  30. They are doing technically what they should be doing.

  31. In many ways, they have their religion.

  32. And yet, God sees the heart.

  33. God sees the motives behind it all.

  34. And there's a lot of things that they're doing that is just plain wrong.

  35. And, you know, it is the state of the leaders of the people that has got them to this point.

  36. And today, we will have a big challenge to the leaders of Christians.

  37. The leaders and the people, well, they were trusting in themselves.

  38. They were trusting in their own wisdom.

  39. They were not relying on God.

  40. And that brings us to the question of what are we trusting in?

  41. Are we trusting in the wisdom of the world?

  42. Are we trusting in our bank accounts?

  43. Are we trusting in our job being secure?

  44. Or are we trusting in other people in relationships?

  45. Or are we trusting in the wisdom of God?

  46. Are we seeking first his kingdom?

  47. So tonight, we have a big passage.

  48. I don't know what you guys are like, but when you read something like this,

  49. and especially Isaiah, for some reason, I just read it and go,

  50. whoa, judgment, judgment.

  51. That's all I can see.

  52. But, you know, we're going to dive in.

  53. And there's many challenges in here, but there's also encouragement.

  54. So we're going to look.

  55. And I want you to keep the lens on the whole time of are we trusting in our own wisdom or in God's.

  56. And we're going to look in four twos.

  57. Hope you're good at math.

  58. Four twos.

  59. So we're going to look at two wreaths.

  60. We're going to look at two promises.

  61. We're going to look at two judgments.

  62. And we're going to look at two worships.

  63. So let's start with the very first verse.

  64. So first of all, two wreaths.

  65. Now, our first wreath is in the very first verse.

  66. Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim's drunkards, to the fading flower, his glorious beauty.

  67. This first wreath is talking about Samaria, the capital of this northern kingdom.

  68. Now, Samaria, it was physically on a hill.

  69. It was physically at this head of this valley, this fertile valley, and actually resembled a crown.

  70. But, you know, it was also regarded as such to the people.

  71. The equivalent today would be, oh, Edinburgh.

  72. Edinburgh's the place to be.

  73. Love Edinburgh.

  74. Edinburgh's great.

  75. That was what was happening here.

  76. But we see in this that there is drunkenness.

  77. There is pride of this as well.

  78. The people here, they had embraced the world.

  79. They had embraced the things of this world.

  80. We see in here the dangers of excess.

  81. The dangers of excess.

  82. You know, this disobedience here has turned this glorious beauty, as said in verse 1 and verse 4,

  83. into a fading flower.

  84. You know, we have these horrible images of tables covered with vomit.

  85. There is not a spot without filth.

  86. I hope you've never seen something like that before.

  87. And you know, Judah is just as bad.

  88. So we have Judah in verse 7, and these also stagger from wine and real from beer.

  89. Judah is just as bad.

  90. And you know, how have they got here?

  91. Well, there has been terrible leadership.

  92. The leaders of the people.

  93. Verse 7 again.

  94. Priests and prophets stagger from beer.

  95. They're befuddled with wine.

  96. They reel from beer.

  97. They stagger when seeing visions.

  98. They stumble when rendering decisions.

  99. That's the leaders of this people.

  100. No wonder the people are in this state.

  101. You know, this chapter 28 here, this really starts a new section of Isaiah where the leadership is challenged.

  102. It's going to be a real challenge for us as people who are leaders of Christians here today.

  103. It's going to be a real challenge these next few chapters.

  104. And you know, Jesus saw this in the Pharisees.

  105. He saw that they were leading their people in a way that wasn't good.

  106. We have in verse 9, there's quotation marks here.

  107. So this is the people speaking.

  108. The leaders speaking.

  109. They say, who is it he is trying to teach?

  110. We're talking about Isaiah.

  111. We're talking about Isaiah's teachings.

  112. Who is it he is trying to teach?

  113. To whom is he explaining his message?

  114. To children wean from milk?

  115. To those just taken from the breast?

  116. For it is do this, do that.

  117. A rule for this, a rule for that.

  118. A little here, a little there.

  119. They are mocking God's teachings.

  120. And you know, they aren't listening.

  121. Verse 12.

  122. To whom he said, this is the resting place.

  123. Let the weary rest.

  124. And this is the place of repose.

  125. But they would not listen.

  126. You know, leadership encouraged particular responsibility.

  127. Don't get me wrong.

  128. The people have followed along.

  129. They're in the wrong here as well.

  130. But the leaders have led them down this path.

  131. And you know, earthly wisdom, it tells us to follow the crowd.

  132. To do what the popular leaders, the strong and mighty,

  133. to follow them.

  134. To do what they would say.

  135. Go with the flow.

  136. That is the first wreath that we see here.

  137. You know, our second wreath couldn't be more different.

  138. We see in verse 5.

  139. In that day, the Lord Almighty will be a glorious crown.

  140. A beautiful wreath for the remnant of his people.

  141. What a contrast.

  142. What a difference.

  143. The Lord Almighty.

  144. And what leadership do we see there?

  145. Well, we see in verse 6.

  146. He will be a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgment.

  147. A source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.

  148. Justice and strength.

  149. And you know, this crown, this wreath, the Lord Jesus, this does not fade.

  150. The Lord does not fade.

  151. The Lord Almighty.

  152. I was reminded of the hymn lyrics,

  153. I will not boast in anything.

  154. No gifts, no power, no wisdom.

  155. But I will boast in Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection.

  156. Godly wisdom tells us to follow the Lord.

  157. To trust in him and to do as he would have us to do.

  158. What are we trusting in?

  159. What are we boasting in?

  160. So that is our first two.

  161. We've had our two wreaths.

  162. So in our second two, we've got our two promises.

  163. The first promise is found in verse 15.

  164. You boast.

  165. Once again, they are boasting.

  166. You boast.

  167. We have entered into a covenant with death.

  168. With the realm of the dead, we have made an agreement.

  169. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us.

  170. For we have made a lie our refuge.

  171. And falsehood our resting place.

  172. Our hiding place.

  173. So the historical context here, this covenant of death.

  174. So what this was, was that the people of the southern kingdom, they had made this arrangement with Egypt,

  175. which was a major power of the day, a battling nation.

  176. But the main threat of the day was from the east.

  177. It was Assyria.

  178. Assyria.

  179. And the agreement that the people of Jerusalem had made, the leaders had made,

  180. was that if Assyria was to attack and to defeat the northern kingdom,

  181. then the southern kingdom would be safe because they'd made this pact, this covenant with Egypt.

  182. And you know, they were boasting in it.

  183. But we see in 18 and 19, that although this was a great idea, according to man,

  184. you know, this was a great idea, it seemed the best thing to do.

  185. Why wouldn't you do this?

  186. And yet we see in 18, your covenant with death will be annulled.

  187. Your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand.

  188. When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by, you'll be beaten down by it.

  189. As often as it comes, it will carry you away.

  190. Morning after morning, by day and by night, it will sweep through.

  191. This earthly covenant was going to fail.

  192. And you know, verse 20, it mocks man-made covenants.

  193. Verse 20, we read,

  194. the bed is too short to stretch out on the blanket,

  195. too narrow to wrap around you.

  196. What's this saying?

  197. Well, it's saying that there's not adequate comfort or protection

  198. in this earthly promise.

  199. It fails to protect.

  200. You know, this was a terrifying message for the people,

  201. the leaders of Jerusalem.

  202. Terrifying.

  203. 19b says that at the end of 19,

  204. the understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.

  205. They were trusting in earthly things that were going to fail.

  206. But you know, this is so familiar.

  207. We are also in this precarious position.

  208. If we are trusting in things of this earth,

  209. if we are not trusting in God,

  210. then we have this false security.

  211. We are trusting in things that will fail.

  212. Once again, earthly wisdom, it tells us to trust in human packs,

  213. trust in others, trust in the strong and mighty.

  214. And are we liable to do that,

  215. to put our trust in these things?

  216. And once again, this is contrasted with the promise of Jesus.

  217. So this is our second promise,

  218. the promise of Jesus.

  219. In verse 16,

  220. So this is what the sovereign Lord says,

  221. See, I lay a stone in Zion,

  222. a tested stone,

  223. a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation.

  224. The one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.

  225. The cornerstone.

  226. We know that to be Jesus.

  227. We know that.

  228. We can read in 1 Peter 2 verse 6,

    1 Peter 2:6

  229. if you want to look that up later on,

  230. about the cornerstone.

  231. The promise of Jesus here.

  232. And what is the promise?

  233. Justice.

  234. Righteousness.

  235. You know, this promise of Jesus is sure.

  236. It's not a promise with Egypt.

  237. It is a promise that is guaranteed.

  238. You know, that means that we can truly rest in Christ

  239. if we have put our trust in him.

  240. Not panic like the leaders of Jerusalem.

  241. You can imagine when the northern kingdom falls,

  242. and the leaders of Jerusalem turn and go,

  243. Egypt, now's the time.

  244. And they're not there.

  245. You can imagine the panic.

  246. But we read a sure foundation.

  247. The one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.

  248. What relief,

  249. what joy,

  250. we can have by trusting

  251. in the one who is the cornerstone.

  252. We have that firm security

  253. in him.

  254. You know, God in his wisdom,

  255. he sent Jesus.

  256. God,

  257. Jesus didn't come into this world triumphantly.

  258. He didn't come in

  259. as a king.

  260. He came in weakness

  261. into a manger.

  262. Vulnerable.

  263. Jesus lived a life of humility

  264. and meekness.

  265. And yet through that,

  266. he conquered.

  267. He conquered the grave.

  268. Jesus was risen again from the dead

  269. to show that victory.

  270. Have we put our trust in him?

  271. So we've had our two wreaths.

  272. That's been our two promises.

  273. And now we're going to see two judgments.

  274. Two judgments.

  275. So first of all,

  276. we have a judgment

  277. against God's own people.

  278. So first of all,

  279. the thing to know about judgment

  280. against God's own people

  281. is that it is alien to God.

  282. God doesn't want to have to judge

  283. his own people.

  284. Verse 21,

  285. God doesn't want to have to.

  286. This is an alien thing to God

  287. and yet he has to

  288. because as we saw in verse 12,

  289. they would not listen.

  290. They would not listen.

  291. But you know,

  292. we see God's wisdom

  293. in judgment.

  294. We have this

  295. farming imagery

  296. going on in 23,

  297. so this is still in chapter 28,

  298. but verse 23

  299. down to 29.

  300. And you know,

  301. what we see in here

  302. is that

  303. when it comes to discipline,

  304. God gives us what we need.

  305. but is the gentlest

  306. possible touch.

  307. We see in 24,

  308. when a farmer

  309. plows for planting,

  310. does he plow continually?

  311. Does he keep on

  312. breaking up

  313. and working the soil?

  314. The answer is no.

  315. You know,

  316. the soil is broken up.

  317. It's to give fertility.

  318. It's to allow things to grow.

  319. That is why it happens.

  320. And you know,

  321. sometimes we need

  322. to be made smaller

  323. so that we are

  324. submissive to God

  325. and so that we can be fruitful.

  326. And you know,

  327. during this,

  328. we can take comfort

  329. that God will not push us

  330. beyond where we can go,

  331. beyond what we can take.

  332. If we are facing trials,

  333. it will not be too much for us.

  334. It's not to say

  335. that it's easy,

  336. but God will not push us

  337. beyond what we can take.

  338. In 27 and 28,

  339. it says,

  340. Carraway is not threshed

  341. with a sledge,

  342. nor is the wheel of a cart

  343. rolled over cumin.

  344. Carraway is beaten out

  345. with a rod

  346. and cumin with a stick.

  347. Grain must be ground

  348. to make bread.

  349. So one does not go on

  350. threshing it forever.

  351. However,

  352. the wheels of a threshing cart

  353. may be rolled over it,

  354. but one does not use horses

  355. to grind grain.

  356. Now, I'm no farmer

  357. and I take it

  358. you're not either.

  359. So this might be

  360. foreign to us

  361. and it probably is not

  362. even what happens

  363. nowadays.

  364. But what this is

  365. basically saying

  366. is that it's the gentlest

  367. possible way

  368. of getting out

  369. the various grains

  370. or to getting to the point

  371. that it needs to be

  372. in order to be useful,

  373. in order to be

  374. eaten or used.

  375. And that's the comfort

  376. that we can take,

  377. that God uses

  378. the gentlest touch

  379. possible.

  380. And you know,

  381. another encouragement

  382. is that God

  383. places his people

  384. orderly

  385. and he places them

  386. carefully.

  387. If God is using us,

  388. then we see in 25

  389. when he has leveled

  390. the surface,

  391. does he not

  392. sow carraway

  393. and scatter cumin,

  394. does he not

  395. plant wheat

  396. in its place,

  397. barley in its plot

  398. and spelt

  399. in its field?

  400. Now, have you ever

  401. walked past a farmer's

  402. field and just seen

  403. a mishmash of crops,

  404. loads of wavy lines

  405. because the farmer

  406. has not bothered

  407. where he's put them?

  408. No, we don't.

  409. You know, it's quite

  410. a beautiful thing

  411. to see a field

  412. and you see these

  413. straight lines

  414. of all the different crops

  415. and you can walk

  416. through them

  417. because they're planted

  418. so carefully.

  419. You know,

  420. God taught people

  421. to do that

  422. and that's because

  423. God does the same

  424. thing with us.

  425. He has a plan

  426. for each one of us.

  427. He uses us

  428. in different ways.

  429. It'll be different

  430. for each and every

  431. one of us.

  432. So we've seen

  433. God's judgment here,

  434. this first judgment

  435. and we've seen

  436. that his wisdom

  437. and judgment

  438. is perfect.

  439. That leaves us

  440. with the question,

  441. do we trust

  442. in God's plan

  443. even during

  444. a season of trials,

  445. even when it's difficult?

  446. And our second judgment,

  447. so our second judgment

  448. is judgment

  449. against the nations.

  450. So at the start

  451. of chapter 29,

  452. we see the judgment

  453. against Ariel

  454. or Jerusalem

  455. and we have

  456. that I will besiege,

  457. so this is verse 2,

  458. yeah, I will besiege Ariel.

  459. She will mourn

  460. and lament.

  461. She will be to me

  462. like an altar hearth,

  463. so like a,

  464. like a sacrifice.

  465. I will encamp

  466. against you

  467. on all sides.

  468. I will encircle you

  469. with towers

  470. and set up my siege works

  471. against you.

  472. Brought low,

  473. you will speak

  474. from the ground.

  475. Your speech will mumble

  476. out of the dust.

  477. Your voice will come

  478. ghost-like

  479. from the earth.

  480. Out of the dust

  481. your speech

  482. will whisper.

  483. When all seems lost,

  484. the enemy is at the gate.

  485. They've just about

  486. broken in.

  487. They are surrounded.

  488. Jerusalem is surrounded.

  489. The battle is nearly over

  490. and yet what do we see?

  491. Verse 5,

  492. But your many enemies

  493. will become like fine dust,

  494. the ruthless hordes

  495. like blown chaff.

  496. Suddenly in an instant

  497. the Lord Almighty

  498. will come with thunder

  499. and earthquake

  500. and great noise,

  501. with windstorm

  502. and tempest

  503. and flames

  504. of a devouring fire.

  505. God destroys

  506. the enemies

  507. of his people.

  508. God steps in

  509. and saves

  510. his own.

  511. You know,

  512. this was,

  513. comes down

  514. to the near

  515. and far prophecy

  516. that we often see

  517. in prophecy

  518. in the Old Testament.

  519. What that means

  520. is that there's often,

  521. so this was speaking

  522. to the people of Israel

  523. and you know,

  524. so then there was

  525. a near prophecy

  526. which we would

  527. have in our past

  528. but then there was

  529. also a far prophecy

  530. which is still

  531. to come for us.

  532. And you know,

  533. this here was partly

  534. fulfilled

  535. with the attacks

  536. of Assyria and Babylon.

  537. Assyria attacked,

  538. they surrounded

  539. but then they were defeated

  540. but they were not

  541. absolutely destroyed

  542. as we saw in verse 5,

  543. will become like

  544. fine dust.

  545. And so this part

  546. is still to be

  547. completely fulfilled

  548. in the future.

  549. If you're interested,

  550. you can read about that

  551. in Zechariah 14 and 2

  552. and in Revelation chapter 16.

    Revelation 16 chapter mention

  553. Bit of homework for you

  554. if you fancy it.

  555. And you know,

  556. the dreamers here,

  557. so the dreamers here

  558. are the enemy

  559. of God's people.

  560. We have that these people

  561. are dreaming

  562. and they're,

  563. it's a hungry person

  564. and they're dreaming

  565. of eating

  566. but they wake up

  567. and they are hungry still.

  568. And what this is saying

  569. is that the enemies of God,

  570. they attacked

  571. and yet they were sent back

  572. and it was as if

  573. they hadn't attacked at all.

  574. They achieved nothing.

  575. That is God's judgment

  576. against the nations.

  577. You know,

  578. the world will tell us

  579. that we can do

  580. what we want,

  581. that there's no consequences.

  582. But you know,

  583. God is judge.

  584. God is judge.

  585. Are you ready for that?

  586. God is judge.

  587. So finally,

  588. we've had our,

  589. we've had three twos.

  590. So for those that are good at maths,

  591. this is the last one.

  592. Our fourth two.

  593. We have two worships.

  594. So we've had our two wreaths,

  595. our two promises,

  596. our two judgments,

  597. and now we're going to see

  598. our two worships.

  599. First of all,

  600. the first worship

  601. is empty religion.

  602. We see in 29 verse 1,

  603. add year to year

  604. and let your cycle

  605. of festivals go on.

  606. Add year to year,

  607. let your cycle

  608. of festivals go on.

  609. This is just repetitive religion.

  610. You know,

  611. this is getting to the certain

  612. point of the year

  613. and going,

  614. well,

  615. this is what we do every year

  616. so we will do it again.

  617. You know,

  618. we have that to some degree.

  619. We have Christmas,

  620. we have many services,

  621. we celebrate with family,

  622. same with Easter.

  623. But you know,

  624. the Jewish calendar was full.

  625. You could hardly get by a week

  626. without doing a festival.

  627. They were celebrating things

  628. that had gone on

  629. in Israel's past,

  630. things that God had done

  631. for them.

  632. You know,

  633. these things weren't wrong,

  634. but it was

  635. the thought behind them.

  636. We see that,

  637. you know,

  638. these people were doing

  639. these things,

  640. but this is just before

  641. we see the judgment

  642. that came upon them.

  643. So,

  644. you know,

  645. these repetitive festivals,

  646. they did not stop

  647. God's judgment.

  648. And we see in verse 13

  649. of the complete

  650. and utter

  651. empty worship

  652. of the people.

  653. The Lord says,

  654. these people come near to me

  655. with their mouth

  656. and honor me

  657. with their lips,

  658. but their hearts

  659. are far from me.

  660. Their worship of me

  661. is based on merely

  662. human rules

  663. they have been taught.

  664. These people were doing

  665. the right things.

  666. They were attending

  667. the festivals.

  668. They were

  669. doing the things

  670. they should have done,

  671. but it was just

  672. human tradition.

  673. There was no heart

  674. behind what they were doing.

  675. You know,

  676. this was the epitome

  677. of the Pharisee.

  678. Jesus called out

  679. the Pharisees

  680. in the New Testament

  681. for what they were.

  682. They were just

  683. doing intellectual exercises.

  684. They were doing things

  685. to be seen.

  686. There was nothing

  687. behind what they were doing.

  688. Matthew 15,

  689. if you want to

  690. look at that.

  691. There was no heart

  692. in what the people

  693. were doing.

  694. And you know,

  695. this earthly wisdom

  696. is shown to be

  697. completely useless

  698. before God

  699. in verse 14.

  700. Therefore,

  701. once more,

  702. I will astound

  703. these people

  704. with wonder

  705. upon wonder.

  706. the wisdom

  707. of the wise

  708. will perish.

  709. The intelligence

  710. of the intelligent

  711. will vanish.

  712. Men prefer

  713. their own wisdom.

  714. They prefer

  715. their own way

  716. of doing things.

  717. But before God,

  718. these things

  719. are shown

  720. to be complete

  721. and utter foolishness.

  722. Are we just

  723. making sure

  724. that we're being seen

  725. to be doing

  726. the right things?

  727. Is our Christian life

  728. just a tick-the-box

  729. exercise?

  730. Are we just

  731. talking the right

  732. talk?

  733. But our second

  734. worship,

  735. we see true faith.

  736. Our second

  737. worship is true

  738. faith.

  739. We see

  740. and we can be

  741. so encouraged

  742. that the weak

  743. in earthly terms,

  744. those that are

  745. deaf, blind,

  746. poor, and meek,

  747. they will see

  748. and rejoice.

  749. verse 18,

  750. in that day

  751. the deaf

  752. will hear

  753. the words

  754. of the scroll

  755. and out of

  756. gloom and darkness

  757. the eyes

  758. of the blind

  759. will see.

  760. Once more

  761. the humble

  762. will rejoice

  763. in the Lord,

  764. the needy

  765. will rejoice

  766. in the Holy One

  767. of Israel.

  768. You know,

  769. God uses

  770. those who are

  771. weak in earthly

  772. terms.

  773. the poor

  774. are often

  775. afflicted by

  776. men

  777. and yet

  778. they are

  779. blessed by

  780. God.

  781. We see this

  782. here,

  783. but we see

  784. this throughout

  785. the New Testament

  786. as well.

  787. Those that others

  788. would have

  789. watched straight

  790. by,

  791. God uses

  792. for His

  793. work.

  794. And you know,

  795. true faith,

  796. true worship

  797. of God.

  798. It starts

  799. with a fear

  800. and reverence

  801. of God.

  802. Verse 23,

  803. when they see

  804. among them

  805. their children

  806. the work

  807. of my hands,

  808. they will

  809. keep my name

  810. holy.

  811. They will

  812. acknowledge

  813. the holiness

  814. of the Holy

  815. One of Jacob

  816. and will

  817. stand in awe

  818. of the God

  819. of Israel.

  820. True worship

  821. begins with

  822. the reverence

  823. of God.

  824. Let's have

  825. that appropriate

  826. reverence

  827. for God

  828. which brings

  829. out true

  830. and loving

  831. awe and

  832. worship of

  833. Him

  834. and all

  835. that He

  836. has done

  837. for us.

  838. True faith

  839. rather than

  840. empty religion.

  841. So we've

  842. seen this

  843. snapshot of

  844. the nation.

  845. We've seen

  846. where their

  847. heart is.

  848. We've seen

  849. behind it all.

  850. The people

  851. here,

  852. they had

  853. embraced the

  854. world and

  855. all it had

  856. to offer.

  857. They had

  858. taken things

  859. to the

  860. excess.

  861. They had

  862. made promises

  863. and they had

  864. trusted in

  865. these promises,

  866. these earthly

  867. things that

  868. were going

  869. to fail.

  870. This brought

  871. panic,

  872. this brought

  873. distress

  874. when judgment

  875. came.

  876. This judgment

  877. was necessary

  878. because they

  879. just wouldn't

  880. listen.

  881. And you

  882. know this

  883. was all

  884. brought about

  885. through empty

  886. worship.

  887. worship.

  888. They were

  889. technically

  890. doing the

  891. right things

  892. but there

  893. was no

  894. heart behind

  895. what they

  896. were doing.

  897. You know

  898. we've seen

  899. God's wisdom

  900. in these

  901. things.

  902. Isaiah here,

  903. he's writing

  904. because he

  905. wants to

  906. build the

  907. faith of

  908. the people

  909. and he

  910. does that

  911. by showing

  912. them that

  913. they need

  914. to run

  915. to God.

  916. They need

  917. to trust

  918. in God,

  919. not in

  920. themselves

  921. or not

  922. in others.

  923. we can

  924. take

  925. comfort

  926. that if

  927. we are

  928. in a

  929. season of

  930. trials then

  931. God will

  932. not go

  933. beyond what

  934. we can

  935. take.

  936. And God

  937. is looking

  938. for true

  939. faith,

  940. not this

  941. empty

  942. religion,

  943. but true

  944. faith.

  945. That's what

  946. he wants

  947. in his

  948. worshipers.

  949. I'm going

  950. to leave

  951. us by

  952. reading a

  953. New Testament

  954. passage.

  955. It's

  956. actually so

  957. it quotes

  958. verse 14

  959. of chapter

  960. 29 in it.

  961. So it's

  962. 1 Corinthians

  963. 1 if you

  964. want to

  965. look it up.

  966. 1 Corinthians

  967. 1.

  968. I'm going

  969. to read

  970. verses 18

  971. to 31.

  972. You know

  973. Archie

  974. actually

  975. had a bit

  976. of an

  977. embassy

  978. leaders get

  979. together the

  980. other week

  981. and he

  982. read this

  983. passage to

  984. us as an

  985. encouragement

  986. and as a

  987. challenge.

  988. And I

  989. trust that

  990. it will be

  991. the same

  992. for you

  993. tonight.

  994. So 1

  995. Corinthians

  996. 1 in

  997. verse 18.

  998. For the

  999. message of

  1000. the cross

  1001. is foolishness

  1002. to those

  1003. who are

  1004. perishing

  1005. but to

  1006. us who

  1007. are being

  1008. saved it

  1009. is the

  1010. power of

  1011. God.

  1012. For it

  1013. is written

  1014. I will

  1015. destroy the

  1016. wisdom of

  1017. the wise

  1018. the intelligence

  1019. of the

  1020. intelligent I

  1021. will frustrate.

  1022. Where is the

  1023. wise person?

  1024. Where is the

  1025. teacher of

  1026. the law?

  1027. Where is the

  1028. philosopher of

  1029. this age?

  1030. Has not God

  1031. made foolish

  1032. the wisdom

  1033. of the world?

  1034. For since

  1035. in the wisdom

  1036. of God the

  1037. world through

  1038. its wisdom

  1039. did not know

  1040. him.

  1041. God was

  1042. pleased to

  1043. the foolishness

  1044. of what was

  1045. preached to

  1046. save those

  1047. who believe.

  1048. Jews demand

  1049. signs,

  1050. Greeks look

  1051. for wisdom

  1052. but we

  1053. preach Christ

  1054. crucified,

  1055. a stumbling

  1056. block to

  1057. Jews and

  1058. foolishness to

  1059. Gentiles.

  1060. But to

  1061. those whom

  1062. God has

  1063. called both

  1064. Jews and

  1065. Greeks,

  1066. Christ the

  1067. power of

  1068. God and

  1069. the wisdom

  1070. of God.

  1071. For the

  1072. foolishness of

  1073. God is

  1074. wiser than

  1075. human wisdom

  1076. and the

  1077. weakness of

  1078. God is

  1079. stronger than

  1080. human strength.

  1081. Brothers and

  1082. sisters,

  1083. think of what

  1084. you were when

  1085. you were called.

  1086. Not many of

  1087. you were wise

  1088. by human

  1089. standards.

  1090. Not many

  1091. were influential.

  1092. Not many

  1093. were of

  1094. noble birth.

  1095. But God

  1096. chose the

  1097. foolish things

  1098. of the world

  1099. to shame

  1100. the wise.

  1101. God chose

  1102. the weak

  1103. things of

  1104. the world

  1105. to shame

  1106. the strong.

  1107. God chose

  1108. the lowly

  1109. things of

  1110. the world

  1111. and the

  1112. despised

  1113. things and

  1114. the things

  1115. that are

  1116. not to

  1117. nullify the

  1118. things that

  1119. are so

  1120. that no

  1121. one may

  1122. boast before

  1123. him.

  1124. It is

  1125. because of

  1126. him that

  1127. you are in

  1128. Christ Jesus

  1129. who has

  1130. become for

  1131. us wisdom

  1132. from God.

  1133. That is

  1134. our righteousness,

  1135. holiness and

  1136. redemption.

  1137. Therefore as

  1138. it is written,

  1139. let the one

  1140. who boasts

  1141. boast in

  1142. the Lord.

  1143. I just

  1144. ask that

  1145. God will

  1146. bless the

  1147. reading of

  1148. his word.
