  1. Great stuff folks. With God's word open in front of us, remember a number of years ago hearing someone refer to themselves as an Ikea kind of Christian.

  2. Now if you want to get what they're talking about, have a think about the last time that you found yourself building a little bit of flat pack furniture.

  3. So one of your experiences was anything like mine, which happened about three or four weeks ago. I'm trying to build a bed for a spare room.

  4. And if you've had an experience of anything like mine, here was the inner battle I faced every time I turned over a new page of instructions.

  5. In my mind I'm thinking to myself, reading the instructions, thinking to myself, do I really need another daul?

  6. You know what a daul is? You've got to learn the lingo with these Ikea flat packs, haven't you?

  7. Do I really need another daul? Does it really matter that the kind of size of screw that I need to put in that joint?

  8. There's got to be some kind of mistake here because the instructions don't quite seem right to me.

  9. Does it really matter that I've got that head poured back to front and upside down?

  10. Does that really matter for how this thing's going to turn out?

  11. Somebody hand me the phone because I'm calling customer services because these instructions don't quite seem right.

  12. Ever had that experience?

  13. You see, what my friend meant, this person meant, when they called themselves an Ikea kind of Christian,

  14. was that they had seen the goodness in following the Creator's design.

  15. And as we take in this passage in 1 Timothy today, that is Paul's plea to this church in Ephesus,

  16. particularly as he thinks about men and women.

  17. How God has made them purposefully different,

  18. and how they are to wonderfully work together in the church.

  19. This is what this is talking about, in the church, not in the world, in the church.

  20. Now here's two things I think we need to be aware of as we come at a passage like this.

  21. Firstly, we need to be aware of the cultural waters in which we all swim,

  22. and how they have influenced how we automatically think about so much of this stuff.

  23. It's a bit like, if you were to ask a goldfish in a bowl,

  24. and you say, do you like the water in which you're swimming?

  25. And a goldfish would turn around to you if it was able to speak,

  26. and it would say, what's water?

  27. Because sometimes we get so used to, don't we, just the environment in which we live,

  28. that we don't even notice that we are growing up in a certain culture that thinks a certain way.

  29. So we need to be aware of the cultural waters in which we're swimming,

  30. and we need to be aware of the church waters in which we're swimming.

  31. And we should expect the timeless word of the eternal God

  32. to challenge our ever-changing culture in the way it thinks.

  33. We need to be aware of the church waters in which we swim,

  34. because some of us here today, we will have never thought about this stuff,

  35. let alone heard it read.

  36. I think that's fair to say.

  37. Some of us will never have thought about this stuff.

  38. And on the other end of the spectrum,

  39. I'd imagine some of us have grown up in church circles here,

  40. where I don't think I'm exaggerating too much to say this is probably all we talked about growing up.

  41. And so I think what that calls for is you bring our cultural waters in which we're swimming

  42. and the church waters in which we're swimming,

  43. if you bring them together,

  44. friends, what this means is that we come to this passage today with great humility.

  45. And we choose to put ourselves under God's word, not over it.

  46. In other words, we don't tell God's word what it should say.

  47. We listen and we respond appropriately.

  48. And we come at this with a great love for one another.

  49. If nothing else, this passage today, I hope,

  50. by God's spirit, inflames our love for one another

  51. and our desire to see one another flourish.

  52. And so here's my aim today.

  53. I've got one aim.

  54. It's to help us see the beauty

  55. in being IKEA kind of Christians.

  56. Because this little section, remember,

  57. is tied so closely to

  58. verses 1 to 7 of chapter 2,

  59. which was all about

  60. the church sharing God's heart

  61. that the peoples of the world

  62. would come to know Jesus.

  63. It's so closely tied to it.

  64. And I think how the peoples of the world

  65. are going to see us in action

  66. is a big factor in our witness to the world.

  67. So the world should be able to look in and see

  68. a counter-cultural, Christ-like community

  69. of men and women together seeking to glorify God

  70. and enjoy him forever.

  71. So this stuff on men and women

  72. is part of that bigger mission

  73. that we saw in the opening verses of chapter 2.

  74. Now, to get into this today,

  75. come with me and look at chapter 4,

  76. verses 3 to 5.

  77. Opening chapter of this letter,

  78. we thought about the false teaching

  79. that was doing the rounds in Ephesus.

  80. And we kind of get little clues

  81. throughout the letter

  82. as to what the subject

  83. of that false teaching was.

  84. And we get another little snippet here.

  85. Some of the false teaching

  86. that's doing the rounds in this church

  87. is that marriage is a thing to be avoided.

  88. You see it?

  89. Chapter 4, verses 3 to 5.

  90. Some people are saying marriage

  91. is a thing to be avoided.

  92. And you can imagine the spill-on effects

  93. of that kind of teaching.

  94. So I'd imagine it's going something like this.

  95. People are saying truly spiritual people

  96. are the ones who have set themselves free

  97. from the old shackles of God's dusty old design

  98. for men and women.

  99. And why would you subject yourself

  100. to limits on your life?

  101. What you can do, what you can be.

  102. Think about how you can flourish

  103. if you go it on your own.

  104. And imagine that kind of teaching

  105. is going down a storm in Ephesus.

  106. And you can be quick to join the dots

  107. and see that it's a teaching

  108. that would go down a storm in Edinburgh today.

  109. Paul counters this, verse 4, chapter 4.

  110. He says, everything God created is good.

  111. Do you see that?

  112. Everything that God created is good.

  113. And so to this church

  114. who are maybe beginning to believe

  115. the false teaching, he says,

  116. get back to being Ikea kind of Christians

  117. and love it.

  118. And so what he does

  119. is he firstly turns to address

  120. the men in the church.

  121. And here's what he says, verse 8.

  122. Effectively he says,

  123. stop squabbling

  124. and start praying.

  125. It's interesting.

  126. See, when you read Acts 19,

  127. and you can go home

  128. in your own time and do that,

  129. when the gospel first hit Ephesus,

  130. the message of Jesus

  131. first hits this city,

  132. the men that you meet

  133. in the marketplace there

  134. who caused this rabble,

  135. what are they doing?

  136. The two things that they're doing

  137. in Ephesus,

  138. they're raising their voices

  139. and they're being angry.

  140. Right?

  141. That's the two characteristics

  142. of the men that you meet

  143. in Acts 19,

  144. what they're doing.

  145. It might be part and parcel

  146. of what it means

  147. to be a man in Ephesus

  148. in this day.

  149. I don't know.

  150. But could it be

  151. that some of those attitudes

  152. of being angry

  153. and raising your voice

  154. have made their way

  155. into the church?

  156. And that's why Paul says

  157. to the men,

  158. he says,

  159. don't be about disputing

  160. or anger.

  161. Do you see how he specifically

  162. goes for those things?

  163. Don't be known for being angry.

  164. Don't be known

  165. for your arguments.

  166. I don't know what's going on

  167. in the background here.

  168. It's almost impossible to tell

  169. if it's not for the little clues

  170. that you put together.

  171. Could it be that the men

  172. in this church

  173. are being envious

  174. of one another?

  175. Could it be that they are

  176. gossiping about one another

  177. behind each other's backs?

  178. Could it be that

  179. they love nothing more

  180. than an intellectual argument

  181. and winning it?

  182. Could it be that

  183. they're competing

  184. with one another in prayer?

  185. Who can pray better?

  186. Who's got more impressive prayers?

  187. Whatever it is,

  188. Paul says,

  189. guys, you've got to stop it.

  190. What are you doing?

  191. You've got to stop it.

  192. The anger that's in your heart,

  193. the competition

  194. against your brothers

  195. if you're somebody to beat,

  196. you've got to stop it.

  197. You've got to put aside

  198. your petty scrobbles

  199. and you've got to get praying.

  200. I love that simplicity

  201. of that command

  202. to get praying.

  203. Right?

  204. Get praying for the peoples

  205. of the world.

  206. Again,

  207. did you see it so tightly linked

  208. to what's come before?

  209. Get praying for the peoples

  210. of the world.

  211. Get praying with

  212. and get praying for

  213. your families.

  214. Get praying for your sisters

  215. in the church.

  216. Now here's what I want us

  217. to see.

  218. According to Paul,

  219. you see how a godly man

  220. is not somebody

  221. who can lift big at the gym.

  222. Do you see how

  223. a godly man

  224. is not somebody

  225. who's got the drive

  226. and the aspiration

  227. to climb the corporate ladder.

  228. He's not somebody

  229. who's handy

  230. with a black and decker drill.

  231. He's not somebody

  232. who runs the roost at home.

  233. He's not somebody,

  234. dare I even say,

  235. who's even married.

  236. That is not what defines

  237. a godly man.

  238. Oh friends,

  239. would we see

  240. that a godly man

  241. is one who will

  242. get on his knees

  243. and pray.

  244. Do you see that?

  245. And do you feel

  246. the challenge

  247. if you're a guy here?

  248. Are we known

  249. in this church,

  250. the men,

  251. for those who will

  252. get down on our knees

  253. and pray?

  254. And are we known

  255. for increasingly

  256. cultivating

  257. by God's grace

  258. a humble

  259. and a teachable spirit

  260. that loves

  261. to declare

  262. its dependence

  263. on God?

  264. And let me just say

  265. that if you think

  266. about the bigger

  267. Bible story,

  268. Genesis 1 and Genesis 2

  269. which we'll come back to.

  270. Friends,

  271. that's what Adam

  272. was created to do.

  273. Not to live

  274. independently

  275. from God

  276. but to live

  277. in relationship

  278. with God

  279. as he carried out

  280. the mission

  281. which God

  282. had gave him.

  283. And that's what

  284. was ruined

  285. at the fall.

  286. We thought about it

  287. a few weeks ago,

  288. our natural inclination

  289. towards independence,

  290. no political connotations

  291. given, okay?

  292. But it's our natural

  293. inclination,

  294. isn't it,

  295. to do it our own way,

  296. to be a self-made man

  297. to which we always say,

  298. what part of you

  299. did you make?

  300. It's why

  301. if we want to know

  302. what it is to be a man,

  303. we look to Jesus.

  304. Don't look to the world.

  305. We don't look to CR7,

  306. right?

  307. We look to Jesus

  308. because Jesus

  309. is the one

  310. who perfectly

  311. modeled this

  312. and he is the one

  313. who redeems us

  314. from the curse

  315. of the fall.

  316. And what it means

  317. to be sanctified

  318. is to grow more

  319. into his likeness.

  320. and letting those

  321. attitudes spill over

  322. into how we relate

  323. to and view others.

  324. Do you know what I thought

  325. was the most beautiful thing

  326. and this is going to stay

  327. with me for the rest

  328. of my days.

  329. I'll use this as a sermon

  330. illustration every time

  331. I don't preach here,

  332. right?

  333. I'm not going to look at him,

  334. I don't embarrass him.

  335. Stuart was up here last week

  336. and do you know what I loved?

  337. He talked about the passage

  338. in God's word

  339. which made an impression

  340. on him.

  341. Do you remember where he went?

  342. John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  343. How Jesus treated

  344. a woman

  345. who was an outcast

  346. in that society

  347. and how he treated her

  348. with dignity,

  349. how he knew her

  350. inside out,

  351. how he gave her respect,

  352. how he loved her

  353. and I love how he said

  354. that was Jesus in action

  355. that drew me to him.

  356. For as I take it,

  357. guys,

  358. if we are being made

  359. more into his image

  360. then we should see

  361. more of him

  362. in our lives

  363. as God's spirit

  364. transforms us.

  365. You know,

  366. this is going to affect

  367. how we view

  368. particularly our sisters

  369. in the church.

  370. Now,

  371. this is what I saw

  372. on Sky News

  373. the other day.

  374. I don't know if any of you

  375. saw this.

  376. I think it was on Twitter.

  377. I can't remember

  378. but the question was

  379. and I think it was

  380. in the context of

  381. violence against women

  382. in our society.

  383. The question

  384. was something like

  385. is porn

  386. part of the problem

  387. to view

  388. how men view women?

  389. Is porn

  390. part of the problem?

  391. I remember hearing it

  392. and thinking

  393. I cannot believe

  394. that's even been asked

  395. as a question.

  396. men,

  397. may it be

  398. something that the world

  399. would see something

  400. different

  401. when they come in here

  402. and they see

  403. how we treat

  404. our sisters in Christ.

  405. How we just

  406. treat women

  407. like Jesus treated them.

  408. May the world

  409. look in and see

  410. how we are for them,

  411. how we listen to them,

  412. how we value them,

  413. how we protect them,

  414. how we give ourselves

  415. in the church

  416. for their flourishing

  417. particularly in the context

  418. of their walk

  419. with Jesus.

  420. Agreed?

  421. Agreed.

  422. The challenge here

  423. is men,

  424. are we

  425. praying?

  426. You feel the challenge?

  427. Are we

  428. praying?

  429. Are we absorbed

  430. in silly competition

  431. against one another?

  432. Is there anger

  433. that's lingering

  434. in our hearts?

  435. Are we being led

  436. and fed

  437. by our pride?

  438. Stop squabbling

  439. and start praying

  440. says Paul.

  441. Oh man,

  442. how counter-cultural.

  443. I want a witness

  444. to the world

  445. this community

  446. will be

  447. if the men

  448. start behaving

  449. like this

  450. considering what

  451. the men

  452. in Ephesus

  453. were like.

  454. And to the woman

  455. in the church

  456. he says,

  457. in the context

  458. he says,

  459. stop distracting

  460. and start serving.

  461. You read the round

  462. on this?

  463. Women in the first century

  464. were famous

  465. for their elaborate

  466. hairstyles

  467. and their expensive

  468. clothes.

  469. It almost become

  470. a kind of status symbol

  471. as you walk

  472. around town

  473. everybody looks at you

  474. and they know

  475. who you are

  476. and they know

  477. what you're worth.

  478. Again,

  479. is Paul putting

  480. his finger

  481. on a cultural

  482. norm,

  483. a cultural attitude

  484. that has tiptoed

  485. its way into the church

  486. in the way

  487. that the women

  488. here are behaving?

  489. In terms

  490. of how they're

  491. conducting themselves.

  492. Now whatever

  493. they're doing

  494. in the background

  495. here,

  496. do you see

  497. it's disrupting

  498. things.

  499. Maybe for the men

  500. I imagine

  501. as well as the women

  502. it's distracting

  503. from the main thing

  504. how they're behaving

  505. and I think as well

  506. it's causing

  507. divisions in the church

  508. how they're conducting

  509. themselves.

  510. I know what he's

  511. talking about

  512. and be clear

  513. what he's not

  514. talking about.

  515. He's not talking

  516. about promoting

  517. ankle length skirts

  518. or anything like that.

  519. That's not what he's

  520. saying.

  521. He's saying to the woman

  522. think about

  523. others.

  524. What is it

  525. that you're

  526. prioritising

  527. in your life?

  528. Dear sisters

  529. here today

  530. what are the

  531. things that

  532. you might be

  533. doing

  534. in here

  535. out of here

  536. that are

  537. a cause

  538. for distraction

  539. and division?

  540. I tried to do

  541. a little bit

  542. of research

  543. on this

  544. asking

  545. different

  546. women

  547. in the church

  548. I don't

  549. know

  550. if this

  551. is going

  552. to hit

  553. I'm not

  554. a woman

  555. you'll see

  556. okay

  557. what is it

  558. you love

  559. to talk about?

  560. What is it

  561. you talk about

  562. when you

  563. hang out?

  564. What is it

  565. you talk about

  566. when you go

  567. for coffees?

  568. Is it

  569. houses?

  570. Is it

  571. wallpaper?

  572. The different

  573. things that you're

  574. planning on doing

  575. to your house?

  576. Is it

  577. who's got

  578. the better

  579. buggy?

  580. Is it

  581. jobs?

  582. Is it

  583. schools?

  584. Is it

  585. friendship groups

  586. that you're

  587. in or

  588. not

  589. in?

  590. For whatever

  591. it is

  592. think about

  593. it.

  594. That's what

  595. Paul was

  596. saying

  597. think about

  598. it.

  599. Wouldn't it

  600. be a great

  601. thing to

  602. do

  603. to have

  604. in your

  605. mind

  606. the next

  607. time you

  608. meet

  609. one of

  610. your

  611. friends

  612. whatever

  613. it is

  614. in the

  615. church

  616. that

  617. encouraging

  618. one

  619. another

  620. towards

  621. godliness

  622. was

  623. central

  624. to your

  625. conversation

  626. because

  627. the timeless

  628. principle

  629. I think

  630. here

  631. is that

  632. godliness

  633. is beautiful

  634. in God's

  635. eyes.

  636. Godliness

  637. is beautiful

  638. in God's

  639. eyes and

  640. the fruit

  641. of the

  642. spirit

  643. man that's

  644. what we

  645. all need

  646. as you

  647. too are

  648. transformed

  649. more into

  650. the likeness

  651. of Jesus.

  652. That's why

  653. I think he

  654. calls the

  655. woman in

  656. this culture

  657. again think

  658. about how

  659. counter-cultural

  660. this community

  661. is going to

  662. be.

  663. He calls

  664. them to

  665. be known

  666. for their

  667. good deeds.

  668. Listen I

  669. love this

  670. quote by

  671. Elizabeth

  672. Elliott

  673. I've used

  674. it before

  675. but I

  676. love it

  677. she said

  678. this

  679. she said

  680. the fact

  681. that I'm

  682. a woman

  683. does not

  684. make me

  685. a different

  686. kind of

  687. Christian

  688. underscore

  689. that

  690. but the

  691. fact that

  692. I'm a

  693. Christian

  694. does make

  695. me a

  696. different

  697. kind of

  698. woman.

  699. So Paul

  700. here he

  701. talks to

  702. the men

  703. and he

  704. talks to

  705. the woman

  706. and offers

  707. two

  708. counter-cultural

  709. yet

  710. wonderfully

  711. attractive

  712. ways

  713. that they

  714. can uniquely

  715. and together

  716. adorn the

  717. beauty of the

  718. gospel in

  719. their city

  720. of Ephesus.

  721. Do you

  722. see it?

  723. We need to

  724. take that

  725. into the

  726. next section.

  727. Now it's

  728. worth saying

  729. as we

  730. come to

  731. this section

  732. that many

  733. dear brothers

  734. and sisters

  735. around the

  736. city and let

  737. me just say

  738. personally some

  739. of my best

  740. friends see

  741. this very

  742. differently what

  743. comes up here

  744. and some of us

  745. here this

  746. morning will see

  747. this differently.

  748. We need to

  749. acknowledge that

  750. and in a

  751. world that

  752. handles its

  753. differences with

  754. people by

  755. saying tolerate

  756. we need to

  757. see that Jesus

  758. calls us to

  759. handle differences

  760. in the body

  761. of Christ by

  762. saying love.

  763. Demonstrating

  764. that love

  765. that would

  766. even die for

  767. its enemies

  768. that Christ

  769. showed us on

  770. the cross.

  771. We need to

  772. carry that

  773. with us and

  774. yet having

  775. said that

  776. we've got to

  777. wrestle with

  778. this stuff.

  779. I just

  780. take a line

  781. a byro and

  782. just score it

  783. out of our

  784. Bible.

  785. We've got to

  786. think about

  787. what he's

  788. saying and

  789. to get what

  790. he's saying.

  791. We need to

  792. see the

  793. context in

  794. which he

  795. draws on in

  796. the passage

  797. here.

  798. Do you see

  799. it?

  800. He says he

  801. talks about

  802. Adam and

  803. Eve.

  804. Again, do you

  805. see it in the

  806. passage?

  807. He's talking

  808. about Adam

  809. and Eve which

  810. is code for

  811. Timothy to

  812. get his Bible

  813. and turn to

  814. Genesis.

  815. Remember these

  816. two know each

  817. other really

  818. well.

  819. Timothy knows

  820. what Paul is

  821. getting at.

  822. Get to

  823. Genesis.

  824. Get to

  825. Genesis.

  826. And you

  827. turn to

  828. Genesis 1 and

  829. 2 and you

  830. will see two

  831. truths there.

  832. I think that

  833. Timothy has to

  834. draw upon here.

  835. Two truths

  836. about men

  837. and women.

  838. Firstly,

  839. equality.

  840. They are

  841. both made

  842. beautifully and

  843. equally in

  844. God's image.

  845. And if you're

  846. here today and

  847. you're feeling

  848. worthless, you're

  849. thinking, is life

  850. worth going on?

  851. Am I really

  852. valued?

  853. Would you know

  854. that you are

  855. made in God's

  856. image?

  857. Whoever you are

  858. here today, it's

  859. why as God's

  860. people, we

  861. care about all

  862. peoples of the

  863. world.

  864. We care about

  865. life and all

  866. its forms because

  867. every human being

  868. is stamped with an

  869. inherent dignity.

  870. It's not one that

  871. you've earned.

  872. You just have it

  873. because you've been

  874. made in God's

  875. image.

  876. You'll see

  877. equality between

  878. men and women.

  879. Every human being

  880. made in God's

  881. image.

  882. And you will see

  883. complementarity.

  884. Now, I couldn't

  885. think of a better

  886. English word.

  887. Not only we've got

  888. one, complementarity.

  889. God brings Eve on

  890. the scene as a

  891. helper to Adam.

  892. Now, before you

  893. jump on the

  894. conclusion that

  895. that's derogatory,

  896. remember throughout

  897. scripture God

  898. refers to himself

  899. as the helper to

  900. Israel.

  901. So it's

  902. dignifying.

  903. And God has

  904. given Adam the

  905. role of stewarding

  906. and cultivating

  907. creation.

  908. filling it

  909. under God's

  910. rule and for

  911. his glory.

  912. And as Adam

  913. leads, as God

  914. has commissioned

  915. him to do,

  916. Eve comes

  917. alongside and

  918. the two of

  919. them can do

  920. better the

  921. thing that Adam

  922. could not do

  923. on his own.

  924. Eve brings

  925. something to

  926. the table.

  927. She brings

  928. something to

  929. the game because

  930. of the way that

  931. God has uniquely

  932. wired her which

  933. perfectly suits

  934. the way that

  935. Adam has been

  936. designed.

  937. It's

  938. complementarity.

  939. Now, if you're

  940. struggling to

  941. picture that,

  942. let me just

  943. give you

  944. something to

  945. carry with

  946. you.

  947. This is

  948. where I

  949. love being

  950. Scottish.

  951. Okay?

  952. Because I was

  953. brought up in

  954. Cayley's.

  955. The guy does

  956. his role and

  957. the woman does

  958. her role and

  959. together it's a

  960. beautiful dance.

  961. It's growing up in

  962. the stuff.

  963. Or you want to

  964. change the analogy.

  965. Do you notice

  966. when we sang

  967. this morning as

  968. we brought the

  969. male and female

  970. voices together?

  971. Do you notice

  972. how beautifully

  973. they're harmonised?

  974. In my role, I've

  975. spoken at women's

  976. coffee mornings,

  977. I've spoken at

  978. men's breakfast,

  979. both of which

  980. involve singing.

  981. I remember hearing

  982. both of them and

  983. thinking, you two

  984. should really meet

  985. because your voices

  986. do something

  987. together which is

  988. beautiful.

  989. I think this is

  990. what Paul is

  991. talking about when

  992. he's talking about

  993. equal yet different.

  994. And of course

  995. that's exactly,

  996. to stretch you a

  997. little bit, what

  998. we find in the

  999. Godhead, isn't it?

  1000. Father, Son and

  1001. Spirit, we sang

  1002. about it this

  1003. morning.

  1004. Our God is

  1005. three in one,

  1006. all three equally

  1007. God but different

  1008. roles.

  1009. And if that is

  1010. who our God is,

  1011. then it would

  1012. make logical sense

  1013. if we're made in

  1014. his image that we

  1015. see something of

  1016. that complementary

  1017. design built into

  1018. the very DNA of

1019. what it means to be

  1020. a human being.

  1021. And yet that's

  1022. what went wrong

  1023. at the fall in

  1024. Genesis 3.

  1025. So you see,

  1026. Paul writes here,

  1027. we need to get

  1028. into this,

  1029. Adam was not

  1030. the one deceived,

  1031. Eve was.

  1032. So Eve ate the

  1033. apple that God

  1034. had forbidden

  1035. them to eat.

  1036. But listen to

  1037. this, I don't

  1038. think this is as

  1039. much a dig at

  1040. Eve as it's a

  1041. dig at Adam.

  1042. Because the

  1043. picture that you

  1044. get if you turn

  1045. to Genesis 3

  1046. is that Adam

  1047. is hiding in the

  1048. background as all

  1049. this is unfolding.

  1050. Adam is there,

  1051. he should have

  1052. been the one to

  1053. jump in and

  1054. said, Eve,

  1055. listen, we don't

  1056. do that.

  1057. Listen, our God

  1058. is so good,

  1059. he's told us how

  1060. we're to live,

  1061. he's told us what

1062. we're not to do to

  1063. show our love for

  1064. him, we don't do

  1065. that.

  1066. And yet Adam,

  1067. Eve takes it and

  1068. she hands some to

  1069. him, the image you

  1070. get is that Adam's

  1071. hiding in the

  1072. background when he

  1073. should have been

  1074. standing up and

  1075. speaking and

  1076. leading.

  1077. And he's the one

  1078. that God holds to

  1079. account.

  1080. He says, Adam,

  1081. where are you?

  1082. And I take it

  1083. as Paul's replay

  1084. in this scene

  1085. and I take it

  1086. Paul is saying

  1087. that this church

  1088. need to rediscover

  1089. something of the

  1090. beauty of that

  1091. original

  1092. complementarity.

  1093. Now, don't miss

  1094. the fact that

  1095. Paul in verse 11

  1096. is encouraging

  1097. the woman in the

  1098. church to learn.

  1099. Don't miss that.

  1100. Please don't miss

  1101. that.

  1102. So hugely

  1103. counter-cultural

  1104. in this day,

  1105. in the Greco-Roman

  1106. world to

  1107. encourage women

  1108. to learn.

  1109. It's so

  1110. counter-cultural.

  1111. Paul is so

  1112. pro-woman here.

  1113. And I take it

  1114. that when Paul

  1115. uses that word

  1116. quiet in verse

  1117. 12, he can't

  1118. be envisaging

  1119. absolute silence

  1120. because he's just

  1121. used, you see,

  1122. the same Greek

  1123. root word nine

  1124. verses earlier

  1125. at verse 2 of

  1126. chapter 2 when he

  1127. was talking there

  1128. about living a

  1129. life of godliness.

  1130. So I just don't

  1131. think absolute

  1132. silence is what

  1133. we should read

  1134. there.

  1135. So it would

  1136. seem strange,

  1137. wouldn't it,

  1138. if Paul was

  1139. meaning something

  1140. different.

  1141. And when he

  1142. says submissive,

  1143. the choice of

  1144. putting yourself

  1145. under someone,

  1146. friends, that does

  1147. not mean that a

  1148. woman has to

  1149. submit to every

  1150. man, get that

  1151. underscored.

  1152. I think in this

  1153. instance, it's a

  1154. reference to the

  1155. elders and the

  1156. public teaching of

  1157. the church, and

  1158. that calls exactly

  1159. the same on the

  1160. men.

  1161. Paul knows that

  1162. women have a

  1163. vital role to

  1164. play in this

  1165. church if it's

  1166. going to grow to

  1167. maturity.

  1168. And add to that

  1169. the fact that

  1170. elsewhere we see

  1171. him encouraging

  1172. women to teach

  1173. the younger

  1174. women, he's

  1175. encouraged them

  1176. to pray and

  1177. prophesy.

  1178. Some of Paul's

  1179. closest and

  1180. most dearest

  1181. co-workers are

  1182. women.

  1183. And yet I

  1184. take it what

  1185. he does

  1186. envisage is

  1187. that both the

  1188. authority and

  1189. the teaching

  1190. role in the

  1191. church is one

  1192. that he sees

  1193. right for men

  1194. to take based

  1195. on Genesis 1

  1196. and Genesis 2.

  1197. And the fact

  1198. that he roots

  1199. that instruction

  1200. in Genesis,

  1201. not Ephesus,

  1202. I think means

  1203. that it's a

  1204. timeless principle

  1205. because it's a

  1206. creational

  1207. principle.

  1208. Now what does

  1209. that mean for us

  1210. today at

  1211. Brunsfield?

  1212. Well it means

  1213. that we'll

  1214. continue to

  1215. encourage our

  1216. dear sisters to

  1217. participate when

  1218. we gather together

  1219. publicly like

  1220. this.

  1221. Leading things

  1222. like small group

  1223. Bible studies,

  1224. leading various

  1225. ministries that

  1226. we'll see next

  1227. week and kind of

  1228. come under the

  1229. umbrella of

  1230. deacon,

  1231. participating up

  1232. front on Sunday

  1233. and leading

  1234. worship,

  1235. reading,

  1236. praying and

  1237. speaking.

  1238. And we've been

  1239. so blessed as

  1240. we've journeyed

  1241. over the years

  1242. seeing women use

  1243. their gifts in

  1244. those capacities

  1245. on Sundays

  1246. and I hope

  1247. that by

  1248. Kate's

  1249. appointment you

  1250. see the

  1251. strategic investment

  1252. we're making

  1253. in women's

  1254. ministry and

  1255. seeing the

  1256. women of our

  1257. church flourish.

  1258. And yet friends

  1259. when it comes to

  1260. the office of

  1261. elder,

  1262. which we'll see

  1263. next week,

  1264. and the teaching

  1265. of the Bible

  1266. when we gather

  1267. together as a

  1268. church,

  1269. I think this

  1270. timeless principle

  1271. kicks in

  1272. and leads us to

  1273. conclude that

  1274. these roles should

  1275. be taken up

  1276. by men.

  1277. And not just

  1278. any men,

  1279. got to get that

  1280. right,

  1281. we'll see it

  1282. next week

  1283. where we'll see

  1284. God-loving men.

  1285. In our world

  1286. where there's a

  1287. leadership crisis,

  1288. the leadership

  1289. in the church

  1290. is vital.

  1291. Men who ooze

  1292. Christ-like

  1293. character,

  1294. men who have

  1295. been tested

  1296. and approved,

  1297. men who have

  1298. committed themselves

  1299. to sacrificing

  1300. themselves for

  1301. the good of the

  1302. church family

  1303. and seeing them

  1304. grow.

  1305. Do you see

  1306. Ikea kind of

  1307. Christians?

  1308. Let me just

  1309. say,

  1310. just swimmer

  1311. there,

  1312. when Paul

  1313. talks about

  1314. childbearing

  1315. at verse 15,

  1316. I take it

  1317. that's a

  1318. direct shot

  1319. at the

  1320. false teachers

  1321. who are

  1322. seeking to

  1323. downplay

  1324. marriage

  1325. and who

  1326. are by

  1327. implication

  1328. who are

  1329. downplaying

  1330. motherhood.

  1331. Now let me

  1332. just,

  1333. just because

  1334. we're in the

  1335. context of

  1336. motherhood

  1337. because,

  1338. listen,

  1339. dads were

  1340. called to

  1341. do exactly

  1342. the same.

  1343. Let me

  1344. just say

  1345. to you,

  1346. if you're

  1347. here today

  1348. and you're

  1349. a mum,

  1350. if you're

  1351. staying at

  1352. home to

  1353. look after

  1354. the kids,

  1355. if you've

  1356. stopped work

  1357. to look

  1358. after them,

  1359. if you're

  1360. sacrificing

  1361. yourself for

  1362. them,

  1363. if your

  1364. days are

  1365. changing

  1366. nappies

  1367. and running

  1368. errands,

  1369. falling into

  1370. bed at

  1371. night shattered,

  1372. all because

  1373. you long

  1374. for your

  1375. children to

  1376. grow up to

  1377. come to

  1378. know Jesus,

  1379. I want you

  1380. to know that

  1381. that is a

  1382. wonderful

  1383. call.

  1384. In our

  1385. culture,

  1386. one of the

  1387. things that

  1388. we have

  1389. is a very

  1390. core of

  1391. identity,

  1392. is it not?

  1393. When you ask

  1394. people,

  1395. you say,

  1396. what do

  1397. you do?

  1398. And friends,

  1399. how often do

  1400. those who are

  1401. in this

  1402. category,

  1403. do we kind

  1404. of reluctantly

  1405. say that

  1406. we're at home

  1407. looking after

  1408. the kids,

  1409. right?

  1410. I think this

  1411. calls us to

  1412. see that that

  1413. is a wonderful

  1414. thing.

  1415. And I take it

  1416. that's exactly

  1417. what Paul is

  1418. saying to

  1419. those women

  1420. in Ephesus.

  1421. Do not let

  1422. them downplay

  1423. the false

  1424. teachers.

  1425. what a

  1426. glorious thing

  1427. it is to

  1428. be a

  1429. sacrificial

  1430. mum.

  1431. Reject that

  1432. false teaching,

  1433. reject it,

  1434. and keep

  1435. going with

  1436. the grain

  1437. of God's

  1438. good design.

  1439. Now listen,

  1440. we've covered a

  1441. lot here today,

  1442. Kate,

  1443. I hope you

  1444. recognise it,

  1445. I could only

  1446. do so much

  1447. justice to it

  1448. in half an

  1449. hour,

  1450. and that's

  1451. why we

  1452. need to

  1453. be in our

  1454. small groups

  1455. thinking this

  1456. stuff out

  1457. together.

  1458. But let me

  1459. just close

  1460. by bringing

  1461. us back to

  1462. the big

  1463. thing.

  1464. The big

  1465. thing.

  1466. Now some

  1467. of you might

  1468. remember if

  1469. you're old

  1470. enough,

  1471. in 1992

  1472. there was a

  1473. book that

  1474. was released,

  1475. I can't

  1476. remember the

  1477. guy's name,

  1478. it was

  1479. American

  1480. Relationship

  1481. Guru called,

  1482. is it

  1483. John Gray?

  1484. I can't

  1485. remember.

  1486. You'll know

  1487. the title,

  1488. you know

  1489. the title,

  1490. Men Are

  1491. From Mars,

  1492. Women Are

  1493. From Venus?

  1494. You heard

  1495. that before,

  1496. that book?

  1497. Well let me

  1498. just take the

  1499. joke, it's

  1500. kind of been

  1501. a joke in

  1502. our culture

  1503. isn't it?

  1504. Let me

  1505. take the

  1506. joke and

  1507. turn it

  1508. around for

  1509. us as we

  1510. finish and

  1511. put it to

  1512. us as a

  1513. truth.

  1514. Now I

  1515. take it

  1516. that as

  1517. we live

  1518. our lives

  1519. together as

  1520. men and

  1521. women, as

  1522. we exhibit

  1523. what it means

  1524. to live under

  1525. the lordship of

  1526. Jesus together,

  1527. friends I

  1528. take it we

  1529. should show

  1530. the world

  1531. that we're

  1532. not from

  1533. here.

  1534. We show

  1535. the world

  1536. as we live

  1537. our equal

  1538. yet different

  1539. lives that

  1540. together we

  1541. are from

  1542. heaven.

  1543. Just think

  1544. how much of

  1545. a counter

  1546. cultural

  1547. community this

  1548. will be in

  1549. Ephesus.

  1550. And think

  1551. how much

  1552. of a

  1553. counter

  1554. cultural

  1555. community

  1556. this will

  1557. be in

  1558. Edinburgh.

  1559. What is

  1560. Paul saying?

  1561. He's

  1562. encouraging

  1563. them to

  1564. go with

  1565. the grain

  1566. of God's

  1567. good design.

  1568. And he's

  1569. pleading with

  1570. them to

  1571. be a key

  1572. kind of

  1573. Christians.

  1574. So let

  1575. me pray

  1576. and then

  1577. we will

  1578. close our

  1579. service.

  1580. Okay, let

  1581. me pray.

  1582. Heavenly

  1583. Father, we

  1584. thank you

  1585. so much

  1586. Lord for

  1587. your goodness

  1588. to us.

  1589. And I

  1590. just pray

  1591. Father that

  1592. your spirit

  1593. would be

  1594. moving amongst

  1595. us today.

  1596. Lord, we

  1597. long to be

  1598. those kind

  1599. of disciples

  1600. who are

  1601. fully submitted

  1602. to Jesus.

  1603. Lord, I

  1604. recognize that

  1605. much of what

  1606. we've spoken

  1607. about today,

  1608. it will come

  1609. at us in

  1610. unique and

  1611. in different

  1612. ways.

  1613. And so

  1614. Father, I

  1615. pray as

  1616. one who's

  1617. just pleading

  1618. that you

  1619. would do

  1620. your work

  1621. by your

  1622. spirit, that

  1623. you would be

  1624. bringing comfort

  1625. and challenge

  1626. and forgiveness

  1627. and healing

  1628. and restoration

  1629. and a

  1630. longing

  1631. for a life

  1632. that glorifies

  1633. you in every

  1634. way.

  1635. So Father, I

  1636. just thank you

  1637. for your

  1638. precious word.

  1639. While we

  1640. recognize that

  1641. it is eternal,

  1642. we recognize

  1643. that we are

  1644. finite.

  1645. And so

  1646. Father, I

  1647. pray today as

  1648. we respond to

  1649. this, that

  1650. you would help

  1651. us continue to

  1652. be disciples

  1653. who glorify

  1654. Jesus to the

  1655. watching world.

  1656. Father, help

  1657. us to love

  1658. one another, we

  1659. pray in Jesus'

  1660. precious name we

  1661. ask.

  1662. Amen.

  1663. Amen.
