  1. Good morning, everyone. Let me invite you to have that passage in Matthew open in front of you.

  2. And it might be worth having Isaiah 7 as well open as we turn to God's words this morning.

  3. But as we start our Christmas, our run up to Christmas today, let me tell you about this man called Matthew,

  4. the man Matthew who wrote this gospel. Little known fact about him is that he wasn't always known as Matthew.

  5. In fact, in a previous life, he was known as Levi. Now, Levi was a Jew and Levi was a tax collector.

  6. So his job was to collect money from his fellow Jews and give it to the Romans who were the despised occupying force of the day.

  7. And you can imagine, given the nature of that job, what he does for a living,

  8. because there was corruption and bribery going on absolutely everywhere, it was a very lucrative profession.

  9. And so if you add all that up, the two defining features about Levi's life,

  10. the two defining features, if they are number one, that you have sold out to the enemy.

  11. You are the definition of a turncoat.

  12. And defining feature number two is that you are most likely very rich.

  13. You can imagine like one of those good old Western films that we all love,

  14. that if Matthew, Levi were around today, he'd be the kind of guy that would walk into a bar

  15. and the music would suddenly stop and everyone would clench their fists, glare at them and say,

  16. son, you've got some neck showing your face in here.

  17. So Levi is that kind of guy.

  18. In fact, it was so despised that apparently the Jews didn't just view tax collectors as traitors.

  19. They viewed them as murderers.

  20. So you can imagine the utter horror when Jesus crops up in the scene

  21. and he doesn't just take an interest in Levi and his tax collector friends.

  22. He wants to know them.

  23. Actually, he calls Levi to be his disciple, to be his follower.

  24. And it's likely Jesus then that gives Levi his new name, Matthew, signifying his new start in life.

  25. Matthew, his name means, one of you knew this, that name means gift of God.

  26. Works in two ways.

  27. It's what Jesus is to Matthew, that the one who stepped into this man's life out of the blue,

  28. out of nowhere, and the one who brought forgiveness and newness of life,

  29. despite Matthew's, Levi's, horrendous life choices.

  30. Let me just say, if that's you here today, maybe you're feeling

  31. you've made some horrendous life choices.

  32. Maybe you're here today and you're thinking, why would anyone want to know me?

  33. Matthew would invite you into his gospel and say, think again.

  34. Think again, because that was me.

  35. It's who I was.

  36. It's why I've written this gospel, because people, outsiders like me,

  37. who thought we had no chance before this God,

  38. he came in the person of Jesus and showed us grace.

  39. And it's what Matthew and his gospel are to the church.

  40. They are a gift from God.

  41. As Matthew reflects on Jesus' life, as he looks back on it,

  42. he writes this gospel so that his fellow Jews will know who this man Jesus is.

  43. And so here is the key word in Matthew's gospel that comes up time and time and time again.

  44. If you're going to read it in your own times, look out for this word.

  45. As Matthew reflects on the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus,

  46. it's the word fulfillment.

  47. Fulfillment.

  48. It's as almost as if Matthew looks back on Jesus' life and everything that happened,

  49. and there's a light bulb that goes on in his head and in his heart,

  50. because he understands that the things that happened in Jesus' life were not random events

  51. that took place in a strange place in a far-off distant land.

  52. They're the very fulfillment of everything that God said was going to happen.

  53. And here's what I was thinking this week.

  54. You know, you've got authors today who revel in the element of surprise.

  55. You know, you heard that line?

  56. The author revels in the element of surprise.

  57. Matthew is the opposite.

  58. He's an author who revels in the element of unsurprise.

  59. This happened exactly like God said it would.

  60. And so the question that I want us to explore over these next four weeks

  61. is what is it that Matthew sees as being fulfilled?

  62. What is it in the birth of Jesus in particular that Matthew sees God was good to his words?

  63. Come with me to Matthew chapter 1 and to verse 18.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  64. We'll jump into the first of these today.

  65. And let me harness the momentum that Pete built up with the kids talk

  66. and tell you what underwhelmed me massively this week.

  67. Do you get any idea what your name means?

  68. I wonder if you were playing that game when Pete was up doing the thing.

  69. Do you know what your name means?

  70. Right?

  71. I wonder if we went around the room, we'd have some cracking backstories

  72. as to what people's names mean.

  73. But I'll tell you what underwhelmed me massively this week.

  74. I'll pick it up with my parents in three weeks' time.

  75. Graham apparently means grey outbuilding.

  76. That's what it means.

  77. Boring.

  78. Functional.

  79. And the irony is that six months ago I painted an outbuilding in our home.

  80. Grey.

  81. But my name means grey outbuilding.

  82. No doubt some cheeky monkey out there will say how fitting.

  83. But in our day, a name may well have some significance.

  84. We do this all the time, don't we, with children.

  85. Sometimes we name other things in our lives.

  86. Names perhaps carry a significant meaning.

  87. But in the Bible, names always carry significance and meaning.

  88. Always.

  89. And you'll see if you've got the text there that Matthew gives us two names in this passage.

  90. Two names that I think, as I've kind of wrestled with it this week,

  91. two names that are the key to understanding what Matthew sees as being fulfilled

  92. in the life and birth of Jesus.

  93. And the first thing to see about these two names is that they are two names with some serious background.

  94. So come with me to verse 22.

  95. This is what Matthew writes.

  96. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet.

  97. Now, the question is, who is the prophet?

  98. Because Matthew is thinking about the prophet Isaiah, the verses that we had read earlier.

  99. This man called Isaiah, this man who God sent to his people as his messenger,

  100. who is on the scene in Judah, circa 700 BC, call it that.

  101. And what's crucial about that time is it's a time when the kingdom of Israel,

  102. those 12 tribes, are divided into the north and the south.

  103. Ten in the north, two in the south.

  104. Judah's in the south.

  105. His people are rebellious.

  106. His borders are threatened.

  107. And his king in Jerusalem is sitting there all the while unconcerned.

  108. And yet the one thing that God's people do have,

  109. because they've got a ton of stuff that is not in their favor,

  110. yet the one thing that they do have is the promises of the covenant Lord.

  111. His word.

  112. Of how he will defeat the enemies of his people.

  113. Of how he will bring his people to a place of rest.

  114. Of how he will raise up a king who will come from David's line,

  115. who will usher it in, and who will be his king, and whose reign will be forever.

  116. And so King Ahaz, with all those promises in his back locker,

  117. with all the history of Israel,

  118. he looks at the enemies who are on the horizon.

  119. And make no mistake, they are big, bad, and scary.

  120. He looks at those enemies, and he's got a choice.

  121. And it's key that we see this choice,

  122. because we're going to come back to it at the end.

  123. The choice is, will he live by faith and God's promises,

  124. or will he live by sight?

  125. Will he live by faith, or will he live by sight?

  126. And so Isaiah goes to him and says,

  127. don't be afraid of your enemies.

  128. Don't be afraid of them.

  129. They might look big, bad, and scary to you.

  130. But understand that the Lord is no domesticated God.

  131. The Lord is the one who is all-powerful.

  132. The Lord is the one who is all-knowing.

  133. And because he is the one who knows the end from the beginning,

  134. we need to understand, remember who the Lord is.

  135. He's telling you that these two nations on the horizon,

  136. who are threats to you,

  137. and who are making insults at you,

  138. they will soon be in the course of history,

  139. two smoldering stubs.

  140. And to prove the point, let me ask you here today,

  141. I guarantee you that you've never heard of King Rezin of Aram.

  142. Have you?

  143. But I can guarantee you that you're sitting here today,

  144. all these years later,

  145. and you've heard of the baby who is to be born of this virgin.

  146. It's exactly what God's point is.

  147. But Ahaz said,

  148. I will not ask,

  149. I will not put the Lord to the test.

  150. Now that sounds pious,

  151. and you think,

  152. well,

  153. sounds plausible enough that he wouldn't want to test God.

  154. But actually,

  155. you look underneath it,

  156. and what he's saying

  157. is a way with your sign.

  158. A way with your sign.

  159. And Isaiah says,

  160. have it your way.

  161. Therefore,

  162. the Lord himself will give you a sign.

  163. The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son,

  164. and will call him Emmanuel.

  165. Now,

  166. what are we supposed to make of this sign?

  167. That God himself is going to arrive on earth

  168. to dwell with his people,

  169. having been birthed through an untouched female womb.

  170. Now,

  171. it's so above our capacity to fathom.

  172. It's so above our comprehension.

  173. It's so above our understanding.

  174. This is something that only God can do.

  175. And I think that's exactly the point.

  176. This isn't about Israel getting their act

  177. together,

  178. although they are called to repent

  179. and put their faith in the Lord.

  180. This is about God being the Lord.

  181. This is only something that God can do.

  182. And I think that because of that,

  183. this is the reason that it divides its hearers

  184. in this day and in our day.

  185. Because Ahaz probably thought

  186. this was a load of nonsense.

  187. But to the faithful believers

  188. in Israel,

  189. in Isaiah's day,

  190. down the ages,

  191. through the horrors,

  192. despite their failures as a people,

  193. those who are faithfully clinging to the promise

  194. that God will do this,

  195. this is a wonderful source of hope.

  196. that God will come,

  197. that God sees,

  198. that God knows,

  199. that God will make good in his promises.

  200. And he will come.

  201. He will come to dwell with us.

  202. And this child who's going to be born,

  203. if you flick on a few chapters in Isaiah,

  204. Isaiah chapter 9,

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  205. he will be wonderful counselor.

  206. He will be mighty God.

  207. He will be everlasting father.

  208. He will be prince of peace.

  209. And he will enlarge the nation.

  210. I take it that just means

  211. others from all over the world

  212. are going to come to know this child

  213. and everything that he is.

  214. This child king will defeat his enemies

  215. and he will save their people

  216. from their sin.

  217. So do you see how these two names

  218. come with some serious background?

  219. Those random things

  220. that come with some serious background

  221. and some serious history.

  222. And so what Matthew observes

  223. is happening in the birth in Bethlehem

  224. is that these two names

  225. with some serious background

  226. become two names

  227. that have come to the foreground.

  228. So in our story,

  229. here are Mary and Joseph

  230. flicking it onto Matthew 1.

  231. Here are Mary and Joseph.

  232. Here are this young,

  233. poor, engaged couple

  234. from this little backwater town

  235. of Nazareth.

  236. Now, you read the Gospels

  237. and Nazareth is a town

  238. that people joke about.

  239. You hear Nathaniel,

  240. what good could come from Nazareth?

  241. It's a town that carries with it

  242. a stigma of thinking

  243. there's nothing that goes on there.

  244. And yet this couple are from Nazareth.

  245. Now, you've got to understand

  246. that OK Magazine

  247. and their engagement

  248. aren't phoning them up

  249. and saying,

  250. can we do a full piece spread

  251. from your wedding?

  252. Okay, Mary's not climbing

  253. the corporate ladder.

  254. Joseph's not just completed

  255. his 15th Iron Man.

  256. The world are not standing up

  257. to attention

  258. when this couple

  259. come on the scene.

  260. Matthew's not bringing them

  261. to the surface

  262. saying, let's toast the success

  263. of Mary and Joseph

  264. in who they are.

  265. What is it Matthew

  266. draws our attention to?

  267. And I love seeing this this week

  268. and really, really seeing it

  269. in all these years

  270. of reading this passage.

  271. What is it that Matthew

  272. draws our attention to

  273. about them?

  274. It's not their success.

  275. It's their faithfulness.

  276. It's a wonderful lesson

  277. for us today.

  278. What is it that the Lord's

  279. interested in?

  280. What does God want

  281. from his people?

  282. It's not that we would

  283. up the game.

  284. It's that we would be faithful.

  285. We'd be faithful to him.

  286. That we would follow his word.

  287. We would cling to his promises

  288. and stake it all on him.

  289. It's their faithfulness

  290. that Matthew draws

  291. our attention to.

  292. Luke records Mary's

  293. Magnificat,

  294. her song of praise.

  295. It's clear that she knows

  296. God's promises.

  297. And Matthew,

  298. he focuses on Joseph.

  299. From David's line,

  300. he's a faithful to the law

  301. kind of man.

  302. Did you see that description there?

  303. He's a,

  304. I want to do the right thing

  305. by Mary kind of guy.

  306. These are faithful people.

  307. And I wonder whether

  308. they're the kind of

  309. representing,

  310. as it were,

  311. exactly the faithful

  312. kind of people

  313. that God's promise

  314. in Isaiah all those years

  315. before was for.

  316. Nothing going for them.

  317. Nothing going on

  318. in their lives.

  319. And yet they're walking

  320. day by day

  321. in faith that God

  322. would deliver on

  323. this promise.

  324. And yet we need to

  325. appreciate,

  326. and here's what I want

  327. you to know as well,

  328. they were faithful people,

  329. but they ain't gullible

  330. people.

  331. You see that in their

  332. reactions,

  333. it takes an angelic

  334. appearance to both of them

  335. individually to convince

  336. them that this is true.

  337. Joseph is about to end it

  338. with Mary when he finds out.

  339. Now what's the point?

  340. The point is that

  341. what C.S. Lewis called

  342. chronological snobbery,

  343. that just because we

  344. exist in 2021,

  345. we look back on this

  346. and think that somehow

  347. we're a lot more

  348. sophisticated,

  349. that we wouldn't have

  350. fallen for anything

  351. like this.

  352. People in this day

  353. aren't gullible.

  354. Mary and Joseph know

  355. how,

  356. this audience,

  357. her first reading

  358. this gospel,

  359. know how the birds

  360. and the bees work.

  361. Right?

  362. They know that

  363. this isn't how it

  364. goes down.

  365. They know that

  366. there's only one way

  367. for a woman to get

  368. pregnant,

  369. and that ain't

  370. happened.

  371. They're not gullible

  372. people.

  373. Matthew emphasizes

  374. that this pregnancy,

  375. do you see it?

  376. What's the Holy Spirit

  377. doing?

  378. This is the virgin birth.

  379. And maybe at that point,

  380. I don't know,

  381. maybe I've lost you.

  382. You know,

  383. the virgin birth,

  384. is that up there

  385. with Bigfoot,

  386. the Loch Ness Monster,

  387. and that guy in the red suit

  388. comes this time of year?

  389. Is it nonsense

  390. in your eyes,

  391. I wonder?

  392. And it's really right,

  393. and you've got to hear me

  394. right in this.

  395. It's good

  396. that we think long

  397. and hard about the

  398. plausibility of the Bible.

  399. And what you find,

  400. and I find this in my own life,

  401. when you really begin

  402. to research this,

  403. and there's some cracking

  404. resources I can recommend

  405. to you if you want to

  406. think more about this,

  407. this stuff historically

  408. really stands.

  409. It really stands.

  410. And it's important

  411. that we understand

  412. that our faith

  413. is not blind.

  414. Our faith

  415. is trust based on

  416. evidence.

  417. But Leonard put me to you,

  418. if you're struggling

  419. with this one,

  420. lovingly,

  421. that if there is

  422. an all-powerful God

  423. who created the world

  424. out of nothing,

  425. is this really all that hard

  426. for him to do?

  427. Well, you see,

  428. that's exactly it.

  429. I mean, I don't believe

  430. there's a God

  431. who created the world.

  432. I don't believe in miracles.

  433. Well, let me ask you again

  434. to think about it.

  435. And maybe think about

  436. the fact that you

  437. probably live your life

  438. in the light of

  439. more miraculous stuff

  440. than you think you do.

  441. For instance,

  442. take the creation

  443. of the world.

  444. You know, Stephen Hawking

  445. said,

  446. because there's a law

  447. like gravity,

  448. the universe can

  449. and will create itself

  450. out of nothing.

  451. You know,

  452. whilst there are elements

  453. of that that are true,

  454. it still doesn't explain

  455. why there's something

  456. and not nothing.

  457. I remember sitting

  458. in biology classes

  459. at school

  460. and listening to the teacher

  461. explain the theory

  462. of evolution to me

  463. and finding her argument

  464. intellectually unsatisfying.

  465. And that wasn't even

  466. beginning to scratch

  467. the surface of the why,

  468. let alone the how.

  469. Can I suggest

  470. that there's a truth

  471. in the slightly mischievous

  472. words of Glenn Scrivener

  473. who said,

  474. Christians believe

  475. in the virgin birth

  476. of Jesus.

  477. Atheists believe

  478. in the virgin birth

  479. of the universe,

  480. choose your miracle.

  481. And let me just recommend

  482. we're going to give this away,

  483. this book called

  484. Is Christmas Unbelievable?

  485. by a wonderful lady

  486. called Rebecca McLaughlin

  487. who's researched these things

  488. and written it down

  489. for sceptics.

  490. Is Christmas Unbelievable?

  491. We're going to be giving them away

  492. from next Sunday,

  493. the couple of Sundays after

  494. on our callers service as well.

  495. It's a wonderful book

  496. that you can take away

  497. but also just to give

  498. to people who perhaps

  499. struggle with this stuff.

  500. Is Christmas

  501. Unbelievable?

  502. But that the virgin birth

  503. happened is one thing.

  504. Why it happened

  505. is quite another

  506. and it's probably the thing

  507. that Matthew wants us

  508. to focus on.

  509. Because the answer

  510. to mankind's sin problem

  511. and history is a long

  512. testimony to this,

  513. is never going to come

  514. from the human gene pool.

  515. The saviour that we need

  516. needs to come from out with us

  517. so as to not be stained

  518. with our sin.

  519. And yet they need to be

  520. one of us

  521. if they are to stand

  522. in our place.

  523. And so the virgin birth,

  524. far from being a take it

  525. or leave it part

  526. of Christianity,

  527. it is one of the key

  528. building blocks

  529. of the Christian faith.

  530. Here is Jesus

  531. fully God

  532. and fully man.

  533. Here is Emmanuel.

  534. Here is God

  535. with us.

  536. God with us.

  537. Get your head around

  538. that one.

  539. I remember a friend of mine

  540. when he was young

  541. went to hospital

  542. for a major operation

  543. and he looks back

  544. on that time

  545. as the time

  546. when he found out

  547. that his parents

  548. really loved him.

  549. He heard them say it.

  550. Sure, the years come by

  551. but it was at the operation.

  552. Looking back,

  553. he remembered that

  554. they were there

  555. when he went to sleep.

  556. They were there

  557. when he woke up

  558. and they never left his side

  559. the whole time

  560. during the operation.

  561. What was it that convinced him

  562. that they loved him?

  563. It was their presence.

  564. Do you see how

  565. in the ultimate sense

  566. here is God

  567. showing a world

  568. and his people

  569. intent on sinful rebellion

  570. turned away from God

  571. running a hell-bound race.

  572. Here is God

  573. reaching down

  574. and saying

  575. this is not about you

  576. coming to find me

  577. because that would never happen

  578. because you love the darkness.

  579. This is about me

  580. because who I am

  581. coming to find you.

  582. And despite us

  583. giving this God

  584. all the reasons

  585. to cast us off,

  586. despite us giving him

  587. all the reasons

  588. to cut ties

  589. because we love the darkness

  590. rather than him,

  591. God came seeking us.

  592. that's what this screams

  593. that this God loves us

  594. and he's come after us.

  595. Jesus come

  596. to show us the Father.

  597. Here is Emmanuel

  598. and it's unfolding

  599. right in this

  600. little manger in Bethlehem.

  601. But here's another question

  602. I asked myself this week

  603. back in Matthew 1.

  604. Why does the angel

  605. not say to Joseph,

  606. you shall call him

  607. Emmanuel?

  608. You ever thought about that?

  609. It's a wee bit confusing

  610. to introduce another name

  611. at this point in the story.

  612. Why not just say

  613. you shall call him Emmanuel?

  614. Because then it would have been

  615. a lot more sense in a way.

  616. We would have known

  617. exactly what's going on.

  618. Where does this Jesus name

  619. come from?

  620. The more I've thought

  621. about it this week

  622. and I could be wrong,

  623. could be wrong,

  624. but here's a shot

  625. at an answer.

  626. Because when you consider

  627. who this God is,

  628. holy,

  629. three times holy,

  630. majestic,

  631. radiantly perfect,

  632. the eternal one,

  633. the one all-knowing,

  634. the one all-seeing,

  635. the fact that he is with us

  636. as sinful people

  637. could potentially be

  638. terrifying news,

  639. could it not?

  640. I know some of you

  641. have got WhatsApp groups

  642. for the street.

  643. Can you imagine a message

  644. that came in that WhatsApp group

  645. and said,

  646. big news,

  647. lying with us.

  648. How would that strike you?

  649. It would strike you

  650. as cool news,

  651. it would strike you

  652. as big news,

  653. but it would strike you

  654. potentially

  655. as terrifying news,

  656. would it not?

  657. Imagine that in the street,

  658. lying with us.

  659. Nobody's running out

  660. into the street

  661. grabbing a selfie

  662. with Simba, are they?

  663. They are locking the doors

  664. thinking we're not

  665. going out of there

  666. because we know

  667. the potential

  668. of the one

  669. who is on the street.

  670. I think that's why

  671. Matthew's quick

  672. to let us know here,

  673. but the angel

  674. said to Joseph

  675. that his name

  676. will be Jesus

  677. because God with us

  678. is wonderful news,

  679. it is potentially

  680. terrifying news,

  681. but God with us

  682. come to save us?

  683. That is incredible news.

  684. Let me quote Max Lucado,

  685. if our greatest need

  686. had been information,

  687. God would have sent us

  688. an educator,

  689. if our greatest need

  690. had been technology,

  691. God would have sent us

  692. a scientist,

  693. if our greatest need

  694. had been money,

  695. God would have sent us

  696. an economist,

  697. but since our greatest need

  698. is forgiveness,

  699. God sent us a saviour.

  700. And that's exactly

  701. what Jesus did

  702. all those years later

  703. as he goes to the cross

  704. to fulfil everything

  705. about his name.

  706. He saves us.

  707. And at the end

  708. of Matthew's gospel,

  709. the risen and soon

  710. to ascend Jesus says,

  711. Behold, I am with you

  712. to the end of the age.

  713. You see, this gospel

  714. is bookended

  715. by God's presence.

  716. Words true

  717. in a new and greater way

  718. by God's indwelling spirit

  719. living in the lives

  720. of his people.

  721. And we've got to understand

  722. that in him,

  723. in Jesus,

  724. we can also say,

  725. having been reconciled

  726. to our heavenly father

  727. through our faith

  728. in who this Jesus is

  729. and what he's done for us.

  730. We can know

  731. God with us, yes,

  732. but God for us.

  733. God for us.

  734. And this is the wonderful news

  735. of the gospel

  736. that's unfolding

  737. in Bethlehem.

  738. Here is Jesus.

  739. Here is Emmanuel.

  740. And both of those

  741. wonderful truths,

  742. those wonderful names,

  743. so wonderfully converge

  744. in the baby

  745. in Mary's womb.

  746. But back to Bethlehem

  747. as we begin

  748. to wrap this up.

  749. You know,

  750. after the angel

  751. appears to him

  752. in a dream

  753. and tells him

  754. about the name,

  755. Joseph's got a choice.

  756. It's the same one

  757. that Ahaz had

  758. all those years before

  759. as he too

  760. is presented

  761. with this child.

  762. Will he live by faith

  763. or will he live

  764. by sight?

  765. Now, make no mistake,

  766. we romanticize this often.

  767. For Joseph

  768. to associate himself

  769. with Mary

  770. and this child

  771. is to sign up

  772. for a life of ridicule.

  773. Right?

  774. Remember,

  775. this is an honor

  776. and shame culture.

  777. Remember,

  778. Nazareth is not a big place.

  779. Remember that people

  780. are people are people.

  781. Down the generations,

  782. people love to talk.

  783. So for him

  784. to associate with Mary

  785. is to sign up

  786. for a life of ridicule.

  787. And there's a wonderful

  788. little parallel there,

  789. give you this for free,

  790. between the life

  791. of the father

  792. and the life

  793. of the son.

  794. Life of ridicule.

  795. But the easy thing

  796. to do here for Joseph

  797. would be do what?

  798. Run.

  799. Bolt.

  800. Save your skin.

  801. Save your face.

  802. You take the sympathy.

  803. Let Mary take the hit.

  804. Let her take the shame.

  805. She can be on her own.

  806. You might have

  807. a fighting chance,

  808. another career,

  809. another job.

  810. I don't know.

  811. But Joseph says,

  812. verse 25,

  813. he will have the name Jesus.

  814. And it's more than Joseph

  815. just doing the decent thing here.

  816. It's him staking

  817. his whole life

  818. and his and his people's future

  819. on the identity

  820. of the one

  821. who is this child.

  822. He's leaning it all

  823. on the name Jesus.

  824. You know,

  825. just as we close,

  826. I remember when I first

  827. moved to Edinburgh

  828. trying to get my head

  829. around the local lingo.

  830. Found out that the locals here

  831. used this word,

  832. Ken.

  833. Okay,

  834. do you Ken?

  835. Why I Ken?

  836. And I soon find out

  837. that Ken means

  838. to know.

  839. Right?

  840. But to say that you

  841. Ken a person here

  842. doesn't mean that you

  843. know them.

  844. It just means that you

  845. kind of know who they are.

  846. And we know,

  847. don't we,

  848. that there's a world

  849. of difference between

  850. knowing somebody's name

  851. and knowing who they are

  852. and really knowing them.

  853. And the challenge

  854. I think this passage

  855. presents us with

  856. as we finish

  857. is do you know

  858. him as Jesus?

  859. Not do you Ken him,

  860. do you know him

  861. as your

  862. saviour?

  863. You know what I love

  864. about this passage?

  865. I love the fact,

  866. again,

  867. I thought about it this week.

  868. Mary and Joseph

  869. say nothing.

  870. They act,

  871. but they say nothing.

  872. In other words,

  873. this isn't about us

  874. upping our game.

  875. This isn't about us

  876. being the most

  877. spectacular people

  878. that God wants us to be.

  879. This is about us

  880. stepping out in faith

  881. and living our lives

  882. in light of everything

  883. that God will do

  884. to save us.

  885. And I wonder whether

  886. some of us here today

  887. have walked in here

  888. in the spirit of law

  889. thinking that we need

  890. to perform for our

  891. Heavenly Father.

  892. And this would say,

  893. no,

  894. this is not about us

  895. up in the game.

  896. This is about Jesus.

  897. This is about who he is.

  898. And if you're here today

  899. and you're struggling

  900. with your guilt,

  901. come to him

  902. as the one who saves us.

  903. Come to him

  904. and know him

  905. as Jesus.

  906. I'll praise the name

  907. of this God

  908. that he would do this for us.

  909. Let's pray.

  910. And so,

  911. our loving Heavenly Father,

  912. we just praise you

  913. for this time of year.

  914. And just remembering

  915. the birth of Jesus.

  916. And I pray, Father,

  917. for some of us here today

  918. who are perhaps

  919. struggling in life,

  920. who are perhaps

  921. feeling guilty

  922. of their sin,

  923. who are feeling

  924. maybe like Matthew

  925. did at the beginning

  926. that we thought about,

  927. who are struggling

  928. with who they are.

  929. Father,

  930. I pray through your Spirit

  931. that you would give us

  932. a fresh understanding

  933. of the one

  934. whose name is Jesus.

  935. Oh, Father,

  936. help us to live our lives

  937. in the light

  938. of who he is

  939. and what he's done

  940. for us.

  941. The wonderful Counselor,

  942. mighty God,

  943. Prince of Peace,

  944. everlasting Father.

  945. and it's in his

  946. wonderful name

  947. that we pray.

  948. Amen.
