  1. Good evening everyone, it's really good to have you with us this evening. I think there are a few visitors, you are particularly welcome.

  2. As Danny said, we're continuing our series looking at This is Our God, and we're looking at Our Good God this evening.

  3. Some of you may know it, I'm a big fan of the Kindle e-reader. I find it portable, convenient and flexible, and for me that outweighs the benefits of having paper.

  4. A lot of the features of the Kindle try to replicate what you can do on paper, and one of them is the highlighting feature.

  5. So if you're reading a book, you might go through and underline a passage or get your highlight route, so you can be reminded of it when you come back again later.

  6. And you can do the same thing on the Kindle, just highlight the passage, and it will remind you that this is something that's important to you.

  7. What you can also do with the Kindle is see what passages other people have highlighted.

  8. So you can go in and find a list of the most common passages in the Bible or any other book that people have chosen to highlight to be reminded of.

  9. So I thought I'd do that. I did it for the NIV for the edition I've got on my Kindle.

  10. And I thought the top two, the two most popular verses, were quite interesting.

  11. So in second position is Romans 8 and verse 28, which says,

  12. And then in first place, the most popular highlight in the NIV at least, is Jeremiah chapter 29 and verse 11.

    Jeremiah 29 chapter mention

  13. And it says,

  14. So my not very scientific analysis suggests that, at least for readers of the NIV, one of the things that they want to be reminded of is the goodness of God.

  15. Two verses that very much bring before us the good plans that God has for his people.

  16. I think that probably is true of most of us as well.

  17. The goodness of God, the fact that God is good, is something that is really important to us and a great encouragement in our lives.

  18. But we have to ask ourselves, what do we mean when we say God is good?

  19. The word good is very common in the English language, and it's used in all sorts of different ways.

  20. So when we say God is good, what exactly do we mean?

  21. Let me put up a quote from the theologian Bruce Milne, a very interesting book on doctrinal theology, Know the Truth.

  22. And he says this,

  23. God's goodness is a perfection which can be classed equally under holiness or love,

  24. and as such underlies the impossibility of separating these two attributes.

  25. Take a second to think about that while I keep talking.

  26. But Bruce Milne is saying that goodness encompasses both God's holiness, which we looked at last week,

  27. and God's love, which we'll be looking at in more detail next week.

  28. And if you want to understand what it means that God is good,

  29. you have to bring these two elements of his character into it.

  30. I think we can maybe say that God's goodness is how his holiness and his love are seen in practice,

  31. how they make a difference in our lives.

  32. Now, if you were here last week, you may remember when Graham talked about God's holiness.

  33. He talked about God as being set apart and perfectly pure.

  34. I think it's probably the second of those that Bruce Milne is thinking of at this point.

  35. The God who is perfectly just, upright, righteous, who can't tolerate sin.

  36. And God's goodness must be based on God's holiness,

  37. on the fact that he can do no wrong and that he can tolerate no wrong.

  38. Now, God's love, I'm sure you'll have an understanding of.

  39. Do come back next week if you have any doubts about it.

  40. But it's these two things, I think, that we have to look at.

  41. One is the God who doesn't do any wrong.

  42. The other is the God who loves us and who demonstrates his care for us.

  43. Let's examine this a bit further, looking at some of the passages and verses that we've looked at already,

  44. maybe one or two others as well.

  45. The verse in Romans chapter 5, Romans chapter 5, verse 7, that says this.

Romans 5 chapter mention Romans 5:7

  46. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person,

  47. though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.

  48. But then verse 8, God commends, demonstrates his love for us in this.

  49. While we were still sinners, Christ dies, died for us.

  50. So I think what this verse is saying, if I've read it right,

  51. is that goodness goes beyond righteousness.

  52. So Paul is saying it's very unlikely to anyone want to die for someone who's just righteous,

  53. who kind of was a holier-than-thou kind of person.

  54. It's more likely, though still unlikely, Paul says, that they might die for a good person.

  55. So goodness, if we take this verse, has the element of righteousness,

  56. but goes beyond that and is reflected in care, in love for others.

  57. If we take the passage that Sabina read to us from the Gospels,

  58. of the rich ruler who came to Jesus and asked about eternal life,

  59. and Jesus says, why do you call me good teacher?

  60. There's no one good except God.

  61. And I think he carries that thought forward into the following verses,

  62. because the ruler is able to say, well, I'm an upright person.

  63. I've obeyed the commands.

  64. Now, undoubtedly, he hadn't completely obeyed the commands,

  65. but perhaps he was an upright person relative to other people.

  66. But what Jesus highlights then is,

  67. yes, you may not be doing much that's actively wrong,

  68. but are you really showing love for God and love for others?

  69. Or actually, is the main thing in your life the riches that you have?

  70. Righteousness must be accompanied by love.

  71. Goodness is holiness alongside love,

  72. when we think about God's goodness.

  73. Or look at the other way around.

  74. Is it enough just to love people?

  75. If I love people, does that make me a good person?

  76. We might in our society say someone's good because they do lots of good works.

  77. But again, love by itself isn't enough.

  78. There's from Jeremiah that we read,

  79. where God is making great promises to his people,

  80. that he has good plans for them,

  81. plans to prosper them in the future.

  82. But if we look at the context of that,

  83. it's in the context of God's judgment,

  84. of God's righteousness.

  85. Because the people are going to be in exile for 70 years,

  86. and then says, God, you will turn to me,

  87. and you will get all the benefits that I have promised.

  88. Or Romans 8, the other verse that we highlighted,

  89. that talks about God works everything for good for those who love him.

  90. The context of that, if we read on a verse or two,

  91. is about people being transformed into the image of Jesus,

  92. of being justified before God.

  93. In other words, alongside the love that is there,

  94. there is also God's justice, God's holiness.

  95. So God's goodness combines both his holiness and his love.

  96. Let me then put up a statement.

  97. I think one of the other who have taken this read

  98. have done something similar.

  99. So here's where we're going this evening,

  100. the things I want to talk about as we think of our good God.

  101. God is good.

  102. This is evident through his actions,

  103. his gifts, and his commands.

  104. And his goodness never changes.

  105. God is good.

  106. God's whole character is good.

  107. It's not that God is good sometimes and not good other times.

  108. God is always good.

  109. And that's the point Jesus is making, I think,

  110. in the passage from Luke,

  111. when he says,

  112. there is no one good except God.

  113. We can all do good things.

  114. We can all show love and concern for others.

  115. And yet by nature we are not good.

  116. By nature we are sinners who have rebelled against God.

  117. And God is the only one who is truly good.

  118. And how do we see this?

  119. We see this, I'm suggesting,

  120. through his actions, his gifts, and his commands.

  121. So what are the actions of God?

  122. Let me just highlight two.

  123. God is our creator.

  124. God made the universe and everything that's in it.

  125. And if we read through Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  126. we find again and again God comes to the end of the day

  127. and he looks at what he's made

  128. and he sees it is good.

  129. Or he sees it is very good.

  130. God has made his creation good.

  131. Now this is, I suppose, another quality of goodness,

  132. the quality of excellence to be able to do things well.

  133. But it is also, I think, when it says what God made is good,

  134. it means that it's more than just functional.

  135. It's not just in this world that we have food to eat.

  136. We have food to eat that, by and large,

  137. we can enjoy and gives us satisfaction.

  138. We can hear.

  139. We can hear music,

  140. as God has created our ears and the world around us

  141. so that we can hear and can enjoy things.

  142. We can see, we can look around us,

  143. and we can see the beauty of nature.

  144. And God's creation is not just functional,

  145. it's beautiful,

  146. it's there for our enjoyment,

  147. and it gives him pleasure too,

  148. the fact that he has made something,

  149. he's made everything,

  150. and it is good.

  151. Psalm 100 verse 3 that we read earlier,

    Psalms 100:3

  152. Know that the Lord is God,

  153. it is he who made us,

  154. and we are his,

  155. we are the sheep of his pasture.

  156. Our God is good,

  157. and he has shown it through his creation.

  158. And if we knew nothing else about God,

  159. but what we can see in creation,

  160. then we should still be attracted to him.

  161. Romans chapter 1 and verse 20,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  162. Paul says,

  163. For since the creation of the world,

  164. God's invisible qualities,

  165. his eternal power and divine nature

  166. have been clearly seen,

  167. being understood from what has been made,

  168. so people are without excuse.

  169. In other words,

  170. just looking at creation

  171. should lead us to believe

  172. in a God who is great,

  173. in a God who is good.

  174. But of course,

  175. we can look beyond that

  176. when we think about God's actions.

  177. And we think of God

  178. not just as our creator,

  179. but as our saviour.

  180. And God's greatest action

  181. was in sending his son

  182. into the world

  183. to be the saviour of the world.

  184. He sent the one

  185. who is most precious to him

  186. to live a life of poverty

  187. and to die on the cross

  188. for our sakes.

  189. And that action demonstrates

  190. above everything else

  191. the goodness of our God.

  192. It satisfies his holiness

  193. in that reparation was made for sin,

  194. the punishment that was due for sin

  195. has been taken.

  196. And it demonstrates his love,

  197. the love that was willing to give

  198. the one who was most precious to him

  199. for our sake.

  200. God is good

  201. and his goodness is shown

  202. in his actions.

  203. Then God's goodness is shown

  204. through his gifts.

  205. Now two ways again for that.

  206. God gives us

  207. what we need physically.

  208. I suspect few of any of us

  209. will go away this evening

  210. and won't have a shelter,

  211. a warm bed,

  212. food to eat

  213. and all that we need

  214. for our daily lives.

  215. And much more beyond

  216. a lot that can give us

  217. additional pleasure

  218. that God has given to us.

  219. Our God is a God

  220. who gives and gives

  221. and gives more

  222. than we could ever need.

  223. And he also gives to us spiritually.

  224. He gives us spiritual gifts

  225. that will help us

  226. to be fulfilled in our lives,

  227. will help us to serve others,

  228. to show goodness

  229. to others that God has shown to us

  230. and that will help us

  231. to serve him

  232. as we should.

  233. And these gifts too

  234. are a sign of God's goodness

  235. to us.

  236. He doesn't need us.

  237. He doesn't need us

  238. to exercise the gifts

  239. that he's given us

  240. but he has chosen

  241. to give us these gifts

  242. so that we can glorify him

  243. and so that we can enjoy him

  244. and enjoy being used by him.

  245. So we see God's goodness

  246. in his gifts.

  247. And then also thirdly,

  248. we see God's goodness

  249. in his commands.

  250. Romans 7 verse 12 says,

    Romans 7:12

  251. The law is holy

  252. and the commandment

  253. is holy,

  254. righteous,

  255. and good.

  256. And it may not seem so obvious

  257. that we see God's goodness

  258. through the commands

  259. he's given us.

  260. And yet is it not right

  261. that God has given us

  262. guidelines of how we should

  263. live our lives,

  264. how we are able to please him,

  265. how we are able to get the most

  266. out of being

  267. in this world.

  268. One of the greatest chapters

  269. in the Bible,

  270. as well as being the longest

  271. in the Bible,

  272. is Psalm 119.

  273. And the great theme

  274. of Psalm 119

  275. is that the psalmist

  276. loves God's word.

  277. He loves to go to his Bible,

  278. however much of it he had

  279. in those days,

  280. and to enjoy

  281. what God has said there.

  282. Let me reduce a few verses,

  283. verses 14 to 16.

  284. The psalmist writes,

  285. I rejoice in following

  286. your statutes

  287. as one rejoices

  288. in great riches.

  289. I meditate on your precepts

  290. and consider your ways.

  291. I delight in your decrees.

  292. I will not neglect your word.

  293. I delight in your decrees.

  294. Do we take great delight

  295. in what God has given us

  296. through his word,

  297. the pathway to life

  298. that he sets out before us

  299. as we serve him

  300. and seek to obey

  301. what he has given to us?

  302. God's commands,

  303. along with his actions

  304. and his gifts,

  305. are good

  306. and are beneficial to us.

  307. Our God is good.

  308. The key to that

  309. is that God's goodness

  310. goodness never changes.

  311. It never fails.

  312. And even in the difficult times,

  313. even when life is hard

  314. and we're finding

  315. it's a real struggle,

  316. we can go to God

  317. and we can rejoice

  318. in his goodness to us.

  319. And that's the key difference

  320. between us and God.

  321. We can do an element of good,

  322. not on the level that God can.

  323. We can do an element of good

  324. in our lives.

  325. God constantly does good.

  326. God is good.

  327. And where we are temperamental

  328. and very in the way we live,

  329. God never changes.

  330. Over the last three or four years,

  331. I guess,

  332. many of us have become familiar

  333. with the name Edward Colston.

  334. I think if you lived in Bristol

  335. before that,

  336. you would have been familiar with him,

  337. but not probably elsewhere.

  338. Edward Colston,

  339. for many years,

  340. was considered a great hero

  341. in the city of Bristol.

  342. He was a great philanthropist.

  343. He built schools,

  344. he built hospitals,

  345. he built churches,

  346. he built homes for pure people,

  347. and he was seen as someone

  348. who was good.

  349. And they named streets after him,

  350. they named a concert hall after him,

  351. they put a big statue up

  352. in the middle of the city.

  353. And then it emerged

  354. that Edward Colston

  355. had got his fortune

  356. through the slave trade.

  357. That because he was a slave trader,

  358. he was able to build

  359. by the vast amount of money

  360. and was then able to use it

  361. for good things.

  362. And these days,

  363. he's probably best remembered

  364. because his statue

  365. was thrown into the harbour

  366. at Bristol,

  367. and all the call

  368. and everything named after him

  369. has been renamed.

  370. He was someone

  371. who did good

  372. in some ways,

  373. but also did bad

  374. in other ways.

  375. And in a less extreme way,

  376. I guess we are all

  377. like that.

  378. We have some good things

  379. in our lives,

  380. we have some things

  381. that are virtuous,

  382. we have lots of things too

  383. that we're ashamed of,

  384. and that are certainly

  385. not good.

  386. Our God

  387. is not like

  388. that.

  389. Our God

  390. is perfectly good

  391. all of

  392. the time.

  393. Now I say that

  394. with confidence,

  395. but if you went out

  396. into the street,

  397. there will be a lot of people

  398. who would disagree

  399. with that.

  400. The so-called

  401. new atheists

  402. would tell us

  403. if there's a God,

  404. which they say there isn't,

  405. but if there's a God,

  406. he must be really cruel

  407. and caring

  408. because of all the suffering

  409. in this world,

  410. and indeed

  411. all the suffering

  412. that those who trust in him

  413. suffer alongside

  414. everyone else.

  415. Just because you trust

  416. in God,

  417. you're not exempt

  418. from suffering,

  419. and the atheists

  420. would then say,

  421. well, that proves

  422. there's not a God,

  423. or at least that he

  424. doesn't care for you

  425. if there is.

  426. Now before we dismiss

  427. that out of hand,

  428. let's just take a second

  429. to reflect on the fact

  430. that Christians

  431. do suffer.

  432. In this world,

  433. Jesus says,

  434. you will have trouble,

  435. and that is certainly true.

  436. If I look at this church,

  437. the church post-pandemic

  438. will be in many ways

  439. quite different

  440. from the church

  441. pre-pandemic

  442. because there are

  443. a large number of people

  444. who have been pillars

  445. of the church

  446. for many years

  447. who are now going

  448. through times

  449. of great suffering

  450. and are entable

  451. to be with us.

  452. The names will mean

  453. something to some people

  454. or a lot to some people

  455. or nothing to others,

  456. let me list a few.

  457. The Wilsons,

  458. the McMillans,

  459. the Millers,

  460. the Greys,

  461. the Pontons,

  462. all in their families

  463. and not just one person

  464. generally,

  465. have suffered

  466. and are suffering

  467. a great deal.

  468. Does that then demonstrate

  469. that actually God

  470. isn't good

  471. all the time?

  472. That actually

  473. we shouldn't be saying

  474. God is good

  475. because Christians

  476. can suffer greatly.

  477. Let's move away

  478. from the immediate

  479. local situation

  480. and let me introduce

  481. you to this couple.

  482. Their names are

  483. Joey and Rory

  484. and if you didn't get it

  485. from the name

  486. or the picture

  487. they're an all-American

  488. couple

  489. and very clean cut

  490. they're singers

  491. and came to prominence

  492. in one of these

  493. television music contests

  494. had some success

  495. following that

  496. and went to live

  497. on a farm

  498. and pursue their music

  499. alongside farming

  500. and were all set up

  501. to live happily

  502. ever after.

  503. And then Joey

  504. was diagnosed

  505. with cancer

  506. and it wasn't

  507. either a short

  508. sharp cancer

  509. or a cancer

  510. which got better

  511. over time.

  512. It was a cancer

  513. which lasted

  514. for a couple of years.

  515. She suffered

  516. a great deal

  517. of pain

  518. both from the cancer

  519. itself

  520. and from the chemo.

  521. Here's one thing

  522. that her husband

  523. Rory said

  524. when you see

  525. someone with

  526. so much faith

  527. go through

  528. something so painful

  529. you wish that

  530. somehow God

  531. would exempt them

  532. from so much

  533. heartache

  534. and pain.

  535. Maybe we can identify

  536. with that thought.

  537. Anyway,

  538. after a couple of years

  539. Joey lost her battle

  540. with cancer

  541. and she passed away

  542. leaving her husband

  543. Rory

  544. with a two-year-old

  545. daughter with

  546. Down syndrome

  547. and quite a number

  548. of valid challenges

  549. I won't go into.

  550. One of our closest friends

  551. was a songwriter

  552. and wrote a very

  553. personal

  554. quite sad song

  555. about her suffering

  556. and her death.

  557. And for our purposes

  558. tonight

  559. these are the two

  560. key lines in it.

  561. The song says

  562. I don't believe

  563. that Jesus

  564. that you love so much

  565. would put you

  566. through such pain.

  567. Take a thing

  568. to think about that.

  569. What the song

  570. is saying

  571. is that

  572. Joey

  573. loved the Lord Jesus

  574. but either

  575. he couldn't

  576. or he wouldn't

  577. save her

  578. from the pain.

  579. And so the songwriter

  580. says,

  581. I think he's concluding,

  582. she can't have

  583. a saviour

  584. who is good

  585. all the time

  586. who really

  587. loves her.

  588. Rory recorded

  589. that song

  590. as a direct

  591. with Dolly Parton

  592. but actually

  593. it wasn't

  594. his own sentiment.

  595. He was doing it

  596. recognising

  597. the honest feelings

  598. of a friend

  599. but it wasn't

  600. the way

  601. that he felt.

  602. here's what he said.

  603. Just because

  604. things don't

  605. work out

  606. the way

  607. that you hoped

  608. they would

  609. doesn't mean

  610. that God

  611. isn't still

  612. in charge.

  613. It's still

  614. his plans

  615. and not ours.

  616. So I don't

  617. feel like

  618. my faith

  619. has wavered

  620. at all.

  621. You see

  622. the difference

  623. between these

  624. two viewpoints.

  625. One is looking

  626. at the suffering

  627. of the person

  628. and concluding

  629. from that

  630. there isn't

  631. a God

  632. who cares

  633. and is able

  634. to help.

  635. There isn't

  636. a good God.

  637. The other

  638. is starting

  639. from the point

  640. of view

  641. that there

  642. is a good God.

  643. That we know

  644. God is good

  645. but we don't

  646. always understand

  647. his ways.

  648. And so although

  649. we can't understand

  650. the suffering

  651. that many people

  652. go through

  653. and it's not

  654. for us in this life

  655. to be able

  656. to understand it

  657. yet we can

  658. cling on

  659. to the confidence

  660. that God

  661. is good.

  662. God cares

  663. for us.

  664. The difference

  665. is how we

  666. view things.

  667. Do we start

  668. from the viewpoint

  669. that says

  670. I know God

  671. is good

  672. and we'll come

  673. back to why

  674. in a minute

  675. I know God

  676. is good

  677. therefore there

  678. must be

  679. a reason

  680. for what's

  681. happened.

  682. Or do we start

  683. from the viewpoint

  684. that says

  685. this thing's

  686. happened

  687. it's terrible

  688. that proves

  689. there isn't

  690. a good

  691. God.

  692. So how do

  693. we know

  694. that God

  695. is good?

  696. Well we know

  697. it for the reasons

  698. I said earlier.

  699. We know it

  700. through his creation

  701. we know it

  702. through his

  703. daily provision

  704. for us

  705. and we know

  706. it above all

  707. through the

  708. Lord Jesus.

  709. Our good

  710. God

  711. our saviour

  712. God

  713. Jesus

  714. was willing

  715. to suffer

  716. much more

  717. than we

  718. ever will.

  719. And the

  720. confidence

  721. that we can

  722. have in his

  723. goodness

  724. comes primarily

  725. from our

  726. knowledge of

  727. Jesus

  728. and the

  729. fact that

  730. he went

  731. to the

  732. cross

  733. he took

  734. the punishment

  735. for our

  736. sins

  737. and he

  738. demonstrated

  739. there

  740. in an

  741. absolute

  742. way

  743. the

  744. goodness

  745. of

  746. God.

  747. A couple

  748. of verses

  749. on from the

  750. verse in

  751. Romans that

  752. we quoted

  753. earlier

  754. it says

  755. this

  756. he who

  757. did not

  758. spare his

  759. own

  760. son

  761. but gave

  762. him up

  763. for us

  764. all

  765. how will

  766. he not

  767. also

  768. along with

  769. him

  770. graciously

  771. give us

  772. all things.

  773. So no matter

  774. what the

  775. storms of

  776. life may be

  777. no matter

  778. how much

  779. pain we

  780. may experience

  781. or see

  782. other people

  783. suffering

  784. no matter

  785. how much

  786. we may

  787. pray for

  788. something

  789. and it

  790. seems that

  791. God hasn't

  792. answered our

  793. prayers

  794. certainly not

  795. in the way

  796. that we

  797. expected.

  798. We can

  799. still be

  800. confident

  801. that our

  802. God

  803. is good

  804. and even

  805. in a time

  806. of suffering

  807. we can

  808. experience

  809. his peace

  810. and we can

  811. know that

  812. although we

  813. may have

  814. a thorn

  815. in the

  816. flesh

  817. that we

  818. have to

  819. endure

  820. yet his

  821. grace

  822. is sufficient

  823. for us.

  824. he never

  825. leaves us

  826. he's never

  827. not there

  828. for us

  829. and everything

  830. that happens

  831. ultimately

  832. will fulfill

  833. his good

  834. purposes.

  835. God

  836. is

  837. good

  838. and we

  839. need to

  840. hang on

  841. to that

  842. in every

  843. aspect

  844. of our

  845. lives.

  846. As the

  847. psalmist

  848. said

  849. in what

  850. we read

  851. earlier

  852. the Lord

  853. is good

  854. and his

  855. love

  856. endures

  857. forever.

  858. his

  859. faithfulness

  860. continues

  861. through

  862. all

  863. generations.

  864. Let's

  865. pray together.

  866. Father we

  867. thank you

  868. that you

  869. are a

  870. good

  871. God.

  872. We

  873. thank you

  874. that you

  875. are a

  876. God

  877. who cares

  878. for us

  879. in every

  880. aspect

  881. of our

  882. lives.

  883. And

  884. although we

  885. may not

  886. always

  887. understand

  888. your

  889. ways

  890. we

  891. thank you

  892. that they

  893. are always

  894. good

  895. and they

  896. are always

  897. right.

  898. Thank you

  899. for your

  900. holiness

  901. that you

  902. are so

  903. far above

  904. us

  905. in your

  906. purity

  907. and your

  908. greatness

  909. and your

  910. majesty.

  911. And we

  912. thank you

  913. for your

  914. love

  915. for the

  916. love that

  917. sent Jesus

  918. to be

  919. our

  920. saviour

  921. and to

  922. die

  923. on the

  924. cross

  925. for our

  926. sins.

  927. Help us

  928. to understand

  929. more

  930. of your

  931. goodness.

  932. Help us

  933. to rejoice

  934. in it.

  935. And when

  936. the time

  937. of trial

  938. comes as

  939. it will

  940. for all

  941. of us

  942. help us

  943. nevertheless

  944. to be

  945. able to

  946. continue

  947. to have

  948. confidence

  949. that you

  950. are a

  951. good God

  952. and that

  953. you care

  954. for us

  955. that you

  956. never

  957. change.

  958. Thank you

  959. for your

  960. presence as

  961. we've

  962. looked at

  963. your word

  964. together.

  965. We pray

  966. you'll be

  967. with us

  968. now as

  969. we come

  970. to remember

  971. the Lord

  972. Jesus

  973. together.

  974. We give

  975. you thanks

  976. in his

  977. name.

  978. Amen.
