  1. Okay, so with Acts 11, those verses open in front of you.

  2. Thanks so much, Colin and Ellen, for reading them.

  3. Here's a thing that until last week I didn't know was a thing.

  4. People leaving Google reviews of this church online.

  5. Intrigued?

  6. Want to see three of them?

  7. You want to see three of them, don't you?

  8. Right, someone going by the name E.W. wrote,

  9. Nice interior architecture in a nice location.

  10. Okay, these people might be here today, I don't know if you see.

  11. Dr. Whale Abdu said,

  12. We're a great venue for birthday parties.

  13. Give an amen to that one.

  14. Great venue for birthday parties.

  15. Local tour guide Chris Middleton said,

  16. We're a fantastic community hub.

  17. So you bring that together on Google,

  18. we're getting 4.8 out of 5 stars currently.

  19. Yeah?

  20. Now I'm going to give our building team a few seconds to enjoy that.

  21. And then I'm going to burst our bubble

  22. and say,

  23. That's not really what we're interested in.

  24. To nick a line from the rhyme,

  25. you might remember from when you were little,

  26. We're not interested in the church.

  27. Not really all that interested in the steeple.

  28. But what we're really interested in

  29. is what people would see when they look inside

  30. and see all the people.

  31. Here's a question we're going to be challenged with today.

  32. Would our community call us Christians?

  33. Sound a strange question?

  34. Would our community call us Christians?

  35. Come with me to Acts chapter 11.

    Acts 11 chapter mention

  36. I'll show you what I mean by that.

  37. If there was a lonely planet guide to the Roman Empire

  38. in the first century,

  39. three most biggest influential and biggest cities you would have.

  40. Right?

  41. Number one, Rome.

  42. Number two, Alexandria.

  43. Number three,

  44. this place called Antioch.

  45. You'll find it in the map.

  46. It's kind of the top north one.

  47. What you see about Antioch

  48. is you're looking at something about half a million people.

  49. You see in the map,

  50. it's geographically a cracking location to be, isn't it?

  51. You can kind of go around the corner.

  52. You can go down.

  53. You can go into Asia.

  54. It's a good big city.

  55. People even from China there.

  56. All sorts of different people.

  57. Jews, Greeks, Romans, Persians, Indians.

  58. People from far away as China.

  59. And the locals,

  60. and I think they're called Antiochians.

  61. I think that is the thing.

  62. Okay?

  63. Apparently, they are famous for loving a joke.

  64. Right?

  65. Loving a bit of banter.

  66. They love nothing more.

  67. And this is what historians around the time will say.

  68. Nothing more than to dish out a witty nickname.

  69. That's what you do when you're from Antioch.

  70. And here's why that's significant.

  71. Because when the local people in Antioch looked at these first disciples of Jesus,

  72. watching these people like dandelions in the sun,

  73. just cropping up everywhere, out of nowhere.

  74. We just cannot predict where the next one is going to come from.

  75. Here is what they called these early disciples.

  76. Verse 26.

  77. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

  78. Now, if you're here today and you're wondering,

  79. what is a Christian?

  80. You've come here with all sorts of ideas in your mind.

  81. Ideas, I imagine, from the media.

  82. Ideas, I'd imagine, from your upbringing.

  83. Perhaps what you've seen in the place that you live.

  84. Perhaps from television.

  85. The Vicar of Dibley.

  86. What was that show on BBC a few years ago called Rev?

  87. If all these kind of things are in your mind.

  88. You've picked a great Sunday to be with us.

  89. Because this is the origin of the name.

  90. Do you know what it means?

  91. Christian means literally many Jesus.

  92. So when the locals saw Jesus at work in the lives of these people,

  93. when they heard Jesus being proclaimed and praised from their lips,

  94. they laughed and they teased and they said,

  95. ha-ha, you guys are just little Jesuses.

  96. You know the kind of thing?

  97. Here comes the God Squad.

  98. Look out.

  99. Here come the Jesus freaks.

  100. Way-oh.

  101. Here are the Bible bashers.

  102. Here are the Holy Joes.

  103. Okay?

  104. It's what people see in Antioch when they look at these early disciples.

  105. You guys are just little Jesuses.

  106. Now that's a nickname worth having, isn't it?

  107. So the name Christian in its original context is a nickname.

  108. And Luke lets us see in this passage, I think,

  109. what it was about the lives of these disciples in Antioch

  110. that caused the locals to say that.

  111. There's four of them.

  112. We're going to look at them in just a second.

  113. But before we get there, see what's going on in the book of Acts.

  114. Here's the question.

  115. How did the gospel, how did the news of Jesus even get to a place like Antioch on the map?

  116. Well, verse 19 in the text, if we get into it,

  117. it connects us back to the persecution that happened in Jerusalem,

  118. if you remember in chapter 8.

  119. The early followers of Jesus, they were chased out of Jerusalem.

  120. And they ran to Judea and Samaria.

  121. Now, of course, they are being pushed out of their city.

  122. But what's going on, remember, Alistair took us there a number of weeks ago,

  123. is that Jesus' plan for the spread of the gospel is happening.

  124. Man's worst plays into God's plans and his best.

  125. So Jesus said, you're going to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, ends of the earth.

  126. How is that going to happen?

  127. How are people going to go?

  128. In this case, it is persecution.

  129. It is driving out the people.

  130. It's fulfilling Jesus' plan.

  131. And here in verse 11 of chapter 11, verse 19 of chapter 11,

  132. here's what we learn about those people who went.

  133. They went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch.

  134. And like bees carrying pollen.

  135. And notice, by the way, that these aren't apostles.

  136. The apostles are the guys who are staying in Jerusalem.

  137. These are just ordinary believers, ordinary disciples of Jesus.

  138. They carry the message about Jesus wherever they go, like bees carrying pollen.

  139. And hey, presto, by God's grace, through the work of his Holy Spirit,

  140. spiritual pollination happens everywhere they go.

  141. The gospel is going long.

  142. That's what Luke's telling us.

  143. The gospel is going long.

  144. And the gospel is going deep.

  145. Because in Antioch, look at what happened at verse 21.

  146. The Lord's hand was at work.

  147. These are the descriptions of a historian who wants people down the line to know the details.

  148. So he's taking his time to tell us this.

  149. The Lord's hand was at work.

  150. And great numbers turned to the Lord.

  151. And Luke tells us that again at verse 24.

  152. To bookend that wee bit.

  153. A great number of people were brought to the Lord.

  154. So Luke wants us to know that what happened in Antioch was no drop in the ocean.

  155. What happened in Antioch was an unmissable act of God.

  156. Great number of people become Christians.

  157. And reports of this filter back from Antioch, filter back all the way down to Jerusalem.

  158. And verse 22, what they do is they send Barnabas from Jerusalem to go back to Antioch,

  159. almost as their ambassador, to go to Antioch and to see if what is happening is the real deal.

  160. And what happens is that Barnabas confirms what the people in Antioch are saying about the disciples,

  161. that yes, they are many Jesuses.

  162. Look at verse 23.

  163. When he sees his disciples going for it, what is he?

  164. He's glad.

  165. Right?

  166. I take it that's always one of the marks of the Holy Spirit in our lives,

  167. when we see what God is doing somewhere else,

  168. and it makes us glad.

  169. It's not all about here, is it?

  170. Makes us glad when we see what God is doing elsewhere.

  171. These guys are Christians, says Barnabas.

  172. They've got it.

  173. It's real.

  174. God is at work.

  175. Last week we thought about the first Gentile Christian.

  176. Do you remember his name was Cornelius?

  177. If you want to listen back, you can on the website.

  178. If not, just read it in your own time.

  179. Cornelius, the first Gentile Christian.

  180. Now do you see what's going on?

  181. We've got the first Gentile church.

  182. The gospel's growing.

  183. It's going long.

  184. It's going deep.

  185. And here are the four reasons the people in Antioch called these people Christians.

  186. And as we look at these, remember the question we're asking ourselves.

  187. Would our community call us Christians?

  188. So here is number one.

  189. What do they see about these guys?

  190. They see, first of all, that these people are worshipping somebody else.

  191. What did Barnabas see?

  192. Verse 23.

  193. He saw what the grace of God had done.

  194. Now just take in that phrase.

  195. It's not about these people that they've turned over a new leaf.

  196. They've decided to be better.

  197. Decided to have a crack at this Christianity thing.

  198. No, no, no, no.

  199. This is about God giving them new hearts as he, and like only he can do,

  200. as he breathes in life to spiritual dead bodies.

  201. He takes souls and he transfers them from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.

  202. And that means that if you are a Christian, that is what's going on in your life.

  203. It doesn't matter if you've had an amazing testimony.

  204. It doesn't matter if you've been brought up as a Christian, all of you.

  205. What is going on is a miracle that God has taken you from darkness

  206. and transferred you to light through the work of his son on the cross.

  207. It's what he's done.

  208. It's what's going on here in Antioch.

  209. The grace of God is at work, which is tremendously freeing

  210. because that means you and I did not get into God's good books because of our works.

  211. It means that we've been saved purely by his grace and his compassion and his love

  212. because he is that kind of God.

  213. What's going on in Antioch?

  214. There's new creations everywhere.

  215. You can imagine, right?

  216. Cosmopolitan city that prizes material prosperity and beauty,

  217. thinks nothing of cutting someone down with a bit of wit.

  218. And you're living in a place all under the banner of Caesar is Lord.

  219. That's really who's worshipped here.

  220. Yes, we can do stuff under his, but that's the banner we're operating under.

  221. You can imagine if you're somebody who says, actually, no,

  222. there was a man who came back from the dead and he's Lord of all.

  223. And he controls my tongue, my thoughts and my wallet.

  224. You can imagine that that is your confession in a place like Antioch.

  225. You're going to stand out like a mile, stand out a mile like a sore thumb.

  226. I loved it.

  227. It was down, um, uh,

  228. Wee Cafe in Birdie House with Grace yesterday.

  229. Just opened it.

  230. It's a kind of 20 schemes thing where they're trying to get people back into work.

  231. They've opened this cafe in this community.

  232. And I loved it just on the door.

  233. Nailing their colours to the mass in the community, what they're all about.

  234. Jesus, I'm the bread of life.

  235. There it is.

  236. Bang.

  237. This is who we are.

  238. Loved it.

  239. These people are worshipping someone else.

  240. There's something else that makes them tick.

  241. There's someone else who they're all about.

  242. I guess the question I was asking myself this week is,

  243. Do people in my life know what I'm all about?

  244. Do they know that I worship somebody else?

  245. Think about it.

  246. In your workplace, in your school, in your university,

  247. do people know?

  248. Your family friends, do they know?

  249. That these people are worshipping somebody else.

  250. That's what they're saying in Antioch.

  251. Secondly, these people, they think they're heading somewhere else.

  252. And here's your boy Barnabas.

  253. Right?

  254. You might remember Luke introduced us to him at the end of chapter 4.

  255. His name's not Barnabas.

  256. That's the interesting thing about Barnabas.

  257. His name's not Barnabas.

  258. His name is Joseph.

  259. Barnabas, if you remember, is his nickname.

  260. It means son of encouragement.

  261. So the believers see this guy doing his thing,

  262. and they say the defining feature of your life

  263. is that you're an encourager.

  264. Love that.

  265. You've had a hard day.

  266. Barnabas is the guy you want to call.

  267. Your life's rocking all over the place.

  268. You don't know if you're going to make it tomorrow.

  269. He's the guy that you want to turn up at the door.

  270. Barnabas is an encourager.

  271. And I think that's why they send him to this church in Antioch.

  272. Tough place to be a Christian.

  273. Who are we going to send?

  274. We're going to send the encourager.

  275. Luke gives us a wee description of him again at verse 24.

  276. He's a good man.

  277. He's full of the Holy Spirit and faith.

  278. And boy, is he using those gifts in Antioch.

  279. And we're not just told about him.

  280. We're told what he's saying.

  281. What he's saying,

  282. he was glad

  283. and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.

  284. That's what he's saying.

  285. That's his message to the disciples.

  286. You want to boil it down?

  287. It just means keep on going.

  288. Remain true to the Lord.

  289. Keep on persevering.

  290. Right?

  291. I was thinking about it this week.

  292. This is like Dory from Finding Nemo.

  293. Do you remember her phrase?

  294. What's her phrase?

  295. Keep on swimming.

  296. Just keep on swimming.

  297. Just keep on swimming.

  298. So she says,

  299. just keep on swimming.

  300. Keep on going.

  301. And that's Barnabas.

  302. She says,

  303. just keep on going.

  304. Just keep on going.

  305. I know it's tough.

  306. Just keep on going.

  307. Life following Jesus is tough.

  308. Finding life exhausting as a parent,

  309. wondering if you can keep on going.

  310. The ups and downs of your health

  311. making you anxious about the future.

  312. The death of a loved one

  313. left a huge hole in your heart.

  314. The uncertainty about what tomorrow looks like,

  315. let alone plans coming together for next year.

  316. Is it crippling you?

  317. All meaning that you might be here physically today,

  318. but spiritually inside you are struggling.

  319. Barnabas is the kind of person

  320. who draws alongside

  321. and he brings people back.

  322. And I take it this morning.

  323. I think all of us need that.

  324. To draw alongside

  325. and to say,

  326. I know life's tough.

  327. But let's keep on going.

  328. Let's keep on going.

  329. Where does Barnabas bring them back to?

  330. He brings them back to the Lord.

  331. Love this guy.

  332. Can you imagine him doing this thing in the church?

  333. I'm all ears.

  334. I love you.

  335. Tell me what's going on in your life.

  336. I want to listen.

  337. And that sounds brutal.

  338. Oh, isn't life

  339. just so complicated and hard sometimes?

  340. But here's what you and I need.

  341. Just look at Jesus.

  342. Would you look at him?

  343. Would you remember who he is?

  344. Remember what he's done?

  345. Would you remember what he's doing?

  346. The right hand of God.

  347. He's praying for us.

  348. Do you remember what he said was going to happen?

  349. Do you remember how he said

  350. he wouldn't leave us as orphans?

  351. He would come back?

  352. Do you remember how he said that?

  353. Do you remember how the Bible is the story of the God

  354. who is faithful to keeping his promises?

  355. Not one of God's good plans will ever fail.

  356. Do you remember that?

  357. Do you remember how Jesus said

  358. that heaven's ahead of us?

  359. Do you remember how he said

  360. in the words of the old hymn

  361. he will hold us fast.

  362. He will hold us fast.

  363. Where I fear my faithful fail

  364. he will hold us fast.

  365. Barnabas draws alongside

  366. and he just says

  367. let's just keep on going.

  368. Let's just keep on going.

  369. You know about the Sally Lloyd-Jones

  370. thoughts to make your heart sing.

  371. We do it with the kids sometimes.

  372. She's got a wonderful way

  373. of just phrasing it at the end.

  374. There's three travellers just going on

  375. and one at the front

  376. says to the guys at the back

  377. listen, talking of Jesus

  378. he's already gone ahead of us

  379. into the new day.

  380. He knows the way.

  381. He knows what will happen.

  382. He is all we need.

  383. Let's keep on walking.

  384. It's another Christian life sometimes.

  385. Day after day after day

  386. just plodding

  387. slogging it out

  388. in the paths of faithfulness.

  389. Living by faith

  390. not in today

  391. but living by faith

  392. in what God has said

  393. is true about the future

  394. and the heavenly city

  395. which is ahead of us.

  396. Do we need,

  397. some of us need

  398. some of that today.

  399. Do we need to draw

  400. alongside one another

  401. and do what Barnabas M. Seuer

  402. is doing in Antioch.

  403. Life's tough.

  404. I get it.

  405. I know.

  406. Oh, it's hard

  407. but Jesus

  408. aren't just Barnabas

  409. the kind of guy

  410. who would make

  411. a really good friend.

  412. Imagine that

  413. in Antioch

  414. you're just

  415. people looking at you.

  416. Life is incredibly tough

  417. for them

  418. but somehow

  419. they're just

  420. keeping on going

  421. with Jesus.

  422. It's people

  423. they think

  424. they're heading

  425. somewhere else.

  426. Number three,

  427. these people

  428. they're devoted

  429. to learning

  430. something else.

  431. See Barnabas

  432. verse 25

  433. and again

  434. I love this

  435. in the text

  436. he goes to Tarsus.

  437. See,

  438. remember our map

  439. it was just

  440. around the corner

  441. he goes to Tarsus

  442. because he knows

  443. that that's where

  444. Paul is.

  445. Now Paul's there

  446. because the disciples

  447. had smuggled him

  448. out of Jerusalem

  449. and sent him

  450. to Tarsus

  451. on a boat

  452. when the Jews

  453. made an attempt

  454. of his life

  455. that's back

  456. in chapter 9

  457. and Barnabas

  458. gets there

  459. and thinks

  460. no, no

  461. I'm not the guy

  462. for this job

  463. I need Paul

  464. and I love

  465. the humility

  466. that Barnabas

  467. shows here

  468. because this is

  469. a chance

  470. for Barnabas

  471. to put his name

  472. on the map.

  473. Right,

  474. who wouldn't

  475. want to be part

  476. of the first

  477. Gentile church

  478. to be the guy

  479. that God used

  480. to go and say

  481. hey,

  482. I played a part

  483. in this,

  484. right,

  485. established Barnabas

  486. International Ministries

  487. you know,

  488. could get all this

  489. kind of stuff out

  490. but Barnabas

  491. knows the guy

  492. who Jesus said

  493. was going to be

  494. the minister of his

  495. to the Gentiles

  496. was Paul

  497. and Barnabas

  498. says,

  499. you know what,

  500. no,

  501. Jesus said it was him

  502. and he goes to get him

  503. and he brings him back

  504. and the two of them

  505. do it together

  506. and the two of them

  507. get involved

  508. in the lives

  509. of the people

  510. in Antioch

  511. get involved

  512. in what's going on

  513. and they teach

  514. so what they do

  515. is the word in the text

  516. that Luke tells us

  517. they teach

  518. they teach

  519. these young believers

  520. they get them

  521. in their Bibles

  522. to see

  523. who Jesus is

  524. come and see

  525. come and learn

  526. what he's done

  527. why it matters

  528. what it is

  529. to be a child of God

  530. what it means

  531. to live the Christian life

  532. what happens

  533. after death

  534. the whole shebang

  535. what Paul would call

  536. later

  537. the whole

  538. council of God

  539. and you see

  540. how they do it

  541. not just for a one-off course

  542. they do it

  543. verse 26

  544. for a whole

  545. year

  546. just nurturing

  547. these

  548. young believers

  549. in the ways

  550. of the Christian faith

  551. it's why

  552. in our meetings

  553. that the Bible

  554. is central

  555. it's why

  556. we do Bible studies

  557. during the week

  558. in our small groups

  559. it's why we do

  560. one-to-ones

  561. reading the Bible

  562. together

  563. because this is

  564. what we need

  565. the gospel

  566. to quote Tim Keller

  567. it's not the ABC

  568. of the Christian life

  569. it's the A to Z

  570. of the Christian life

  571. we never graduate

  572. from this

  573. these guys

  574. have a heart

  575. for nurturing

  576. the young believers

  577. and the fundamentals

  578. of the faith

  579. you know

  580. my dad sent me

  581. a picture on

  582. family whatsapp group

  583. sure you've got them

  584. he did it

  585. I think it was November

  586. I get so confused

  587. about what storm

  588. was what

  589. he just sent me

  590. a picture

  591. and I'm pretty sure

  592. it was storm

  593. Arwen

  594. is that the one

  595. storm Arwen

  596. he sends me

  597. a picture

  598. of a huge tree

  599. in the garden

  600. that's come down

  601. and what's happened

  602. it's come down

  603. but all you see

  604. is just roots

  605. in the picture

  606. just roots

  607. these roots

  608. that have just

  609. been nourishing

  610. this tree

  611. for years

  612. and years

  613. and years

  614. these roots

  615. there seems to be

  616. hundreds of them

  617. these roots

  618. there's not just

  619. tons of them

  620. there's metres

  621. and metres

  622. of these roots

  623. and what's happened

  624. is he's been brave

  625. he's gone online

  626. he's bought a chainsaw

  627. to try and free the tree

  628. and he's cut a few things off

  629. to loosen it

  630. and all of a sudden

  631. bam

  632. the tree's gone back

  633. the roots have brought it back

  634. and he flings the chainsaw

  635. and he jumps out

  636. over the other side

  637. the roots were so down in it

  638. it's true isn't it

  639. what we want for our lives

  640. the roots of our lives

  641. to be deep in the word

  642. to be deep in the word

  643. and is it not true

  644. that storms reveal

  645. in our lives

  646. storms reveal

  647. where our roots

  648. really are

  649. alright

  650. I remember one of the first

  651. hospital visits

  652. ever did in this church

  653. was to go and see

  654. a lady called Ruby

  655. Ruby was

  656. she was dying of cancer

  657. down at the western

  658. some of you will know her

  659. remember her

  660. some of you won't

  661. but just what a wonderful

  662. godly lady

  663. remember going to see her

  664. she's sitting there

  665. she is a shadow

  666. of her former self

  667. as she just said

  668. I'm scared

  669. and I loved her honesty

  670. she said I'm scared

  671. I'm scared

  672. refreshing

  673. about how she was feeling

  674. but she said something else

  675. she just said

  676. but I know

  677. Christ

  678. has me

  679. and that's roots

  680. they taught them

  681. for a year

  682. these guys

  683. they're learning

  684. something else

  685. it comes out

  686. in the storms

  687. of their life

  688. people in Antioch

  689. looking and saying

  690. they're learning

  691. something else

  692. something else

  693. is making them tick

  694. roots down in the words

  695. and fourthly

  696. these people

  697. they're up for helping

  698. someone else

  699. and I love this

  700. verse 27

  701. this man

  702. this prophet

  703. called Agabus

  704. and remember

  705. I think we're to understand

  706. that these are unique

  707. things that happened

  708. in this time

  709. God tells them

  710. about a severe famine

  711. that's going to hit

  712. the Roman world

  713. and historians back up

  714. the authenticity

  715. of this

  716. and the response

  717. of the believers

  718. is they hear

  719. they see what it is

  720. right

  721. we hear of a recession

  722. we hear

  723. of financial troubles

  724. that might be coming

  725. what's our first thought

  726. as a culture

  727. it's make sure

  728. that we've got enough

  729. make sure that you have

  730. enough in the pension pot

  731. make sure that you have

  732. enough in your savings account

  733. make sure that you've got

  734. the toilet roll

  735. when it's about to go

  736. make sure you've got the milk

  737. before everyone else buys it

  738. that's not these guys

  739. first reaction

  740. it's not to look after

  741. number one

  742. they think

  743. of their poorer

  744. brothers and sisters

  745. who are back in Jerusalem

  746. for whom this is going to

  747. hit them really

  748. really hard

  749. that's their first thought

  750. we see on a personal level

  751. we can work that out

  752. is there someone

  753. in our church family

  754. here

  755. who's going through

  756. a hard time

  757. maybe financially

  758. maybe we've got a duty

  759. to help

  760. it's a church family

  761. we want to be the kind

  762. of church family

  763. who's looking out

  764. for one another

  765. and wider as well

  766. I've been added

  767. to a whatsapp group

  768. that's been set up

  769. by a ton of churches

  770. down south

  771. and up here as well

  772. just thinking about

  773. how we can support

  774. our brothers and sisters

  775. in Ukraine

  776. prayer updates

  777. coming in

  778. different pictures

  779. being sent

  780. how can we support

  781. our brothers and sisters

  782. over there

  783. not just in Ukraine

  784. but the surrounding

  785. countries as well

  786. who are taking refugees

  787. and I take it

  788. that should be our heart

  789. to want to help

  790. our brothers and sisters

  791. we'll think about ways

  792. potentially that we could

  793. do that

  794. I'm sure

  795. but there's something

  796. bigger going on

  797. I think we need to see here

  798. and this is

  799. this is where we need to see

  800. this is more than just

  801. an office whip round

  802. for a good cause

  803. this is Gentiles

  804. wanting to care

  805. for their Jewish

  806. brothers and sisters

  807. because

  808. their common faith

  809. in Jesus

  810. has connected them

  811. and they've decided

  812. to do this

  813. notice that word

  814. in the text

  815. that it's not just

  816. something they feel

  817. obliged to do

  818. they want to do this

  819. it's a choice

  820. it's a gut conviction

  821. because they realise

  822. that they have got

  823. a Christ shaped duty

  824. to look after

  825. their fellow brothers

  826. and sisters

  827. and again

  828. do you see

  829. how the gospel

  830. Luke is showing us

  831. is smashing down

  832. worldly barriers

  833. you guys

  834. are just little

  835. Jesuses

  836. you're little

  837. Jesuses

  838. and so here's

  839. the question then

  840. would our

  841. community

  842. call us

  843. Christians

  844. by that definition

  845. let me flip it around

  846. are we giving

  847. our community

  848. and you can

  849. broaden that out

  850. our neighbours

  851. our work colleagues

  852. whatever it is

  853. you want

  854. are we giving

  855. our community

  856. cause

  857. to call us

  858. Christians

  859. and here's

  860. where I'm reminded

  861. just as we close

  862. of my friend

  863. Thomas

  864. right

  865. Thomas was one of

  866. my best friends

  867. growing up

  868. and we were

  869. kind of students

  870. at roughly the same

  871. time

  872. I was up in

  873. Aberdeen

  874. he was down

  875. in Edinburgh

  876. and what we used

  877. to do

  878. like most students

  879. do

  880. is during the

  881. summer in particular

  882. get work

  883. so I used

  884. to work

  885. at banks

  886. Thomas used

  887. to work

  888. at bars

  889. one of the

  890. bars he used

  891. to work

  892. at in the

  893. summer

  894. was Edinburgh

  895. University

  896. TV at

  897. bar

  898. that's where

  899. he used

  900. to work

  901. and he used

  902. to work

  903. there during

  904. August

  905. during the

  906. Edinburgh

  907. festival

  908. now that is

  909. a tough

  910. environment

  911. to be a

  912. Christian in

  913. with every

  914. angle you

  915. look at that

  916. from

  917. long hours

  918. that kind

  919. of work

  920. temptation

  921. everywhere

  922. but the

  923. people in

  924. his team

  925. watched Thomas

  926. and they

  927. watched what

  928. he didn't

  929. do

  930. how he

  931. didn't

  932. join in

  933. going big

  934. on the

  935. booze

  936. he didn't

  937. join in

  938. the crude

  939. chat

  940. and they

  941. watched

  942. what he

  943. did

  944. do

  945. how he

  946. spoke

  947. about

  948. Jesus

  949. he was

  950. just a

  951. good guy

  952. to work

  953. with

  954. and the

  955. end of the

  956. whole summer

  957. of working

  958. together

  959. his non-Christian

  960. supervisor

  961. who I found out

  962. this week

  963. from him

  964. was called

  965. Lucy

  966. posted a picture

  967. on Facebook

  968. and I spent

  969. hours trying to

  970. find it this

  971. week and I

  972. couldn't

  973. picture on

  974. Facebook

  975. best Christian

  976. I've ever

  977. met

  978. now that's

  979. a Google

  980. review worth

  981. having isn't

  982. it

  983. what I loved

  984. about the

  985. story I

  986. texted Thomas

  987. this week

  988. said do you

  989. remember that

  990. photo he

  991. said I

  992. remember that

  993. photo it was

  994. back in 2009

  995. and he said I

  996. remember it

  997. because Lucy

  998. she lives in a

  999. totally different

  1000. part of the

  1001. world now she's

  1002. doing something

  1003. completely different

  1004. but every now

  1005. and then I

  1006. hear from her

  1007. life's going

  1008. really hard

  1009. Thomas would you

  1010. pray for me

  1011. I just need

  1012. someone to

  1013. chat to

  1014. Thomas if

  1015. you get 10

  1016. minutes to

  1017. speak on the

  1018. phone would

  1019. you like to

  1020. FaceTime or

  1021. Zoom

  1022. Christian

  1023. let's just

  1024. never underestimate

  1025. the power of

  1026. just a simple

  1027. witness to the

  1028. grace of Jesus

  1029. and let that

  1030. encourage you this

  1031. morning if you're

  1032. in a place and

  1033. you're just finding

  1034. it hard to

  1035. witness for him

  1036. to just keep on

  1037. going never

  1038. underestimate what

  1039. God can do

  1040. through the

  1041. simple witness

  1042. of a Christian

  1043. would the people

  1044. in our community

  1045. call us

  1046. Christians

  1047. because the

  1048. disciples were

  1049. first called

  1050. Christians

  1051. here at

  1052. Antioch

  1053. let's pray

  1054. shall we

  1055. and so

  1056. heavenly father

  1057. we just thank

  1058. you for this

  1059. morning and

  1060. thank you for

  1061. the challenge

  1062. that this has

  1063. brought us

  1064. the challenge

  1065. to be

  1066. witnesses for

  1067. you in our

  1068. community

  1069. father thank you

  1070. for the comfort

  1071. that these

  1072. verses have

  1073. brought today

  1074. that if our

  1075. faith is in

  1076. you

  1077. if we believe

  1078. in the Lord

  1079. Jesus that is

  1080. not because

  1081. we've decided

  1082. to make a

  1083. decision that

  1084. is because first

  1085. and foremost you

  1086. are a God who

  1087. is gracious and

  1088. good and the

  1089. grace of God

  1090. has been at

  1091. work in our

  1092. lives and we

  1093. thank you for

  1094. the new life

  1095. that is found

  1096. in Jesus

  1097. and so father

  1098. I pray for

  1099. us today

  1100. particularly as

  1101. we come now

  1102. to remember

  1103. your son Jesus

  1104. and what he's

  1105. done for us on

  1106. the cross

  1107. as we take the

  1108. bread and the

  1109. wine together

  1110. father would you

  1111. be moving in

  1112. our midst

  1113. bringing that

  1114. sense of

  1115. knowledge of

  1116. who he is

  1117. and so father

  1118. I pray that you

  1119. would just be

  1120. with us as we

  1121. do that now

  1122. in Jesus

  1123. precious name

  1124. amen
