  1. Good morning, everyone. Thank you for your warm welcome. Good to be with you this morning.

  2. A long time ago, I used to live just two streets up from here. Well, roughly two streets, Montpelier Park.

  3. And I don't think I appreciate what a great church there was just down the road.

  4. But lovely to be with you today and to be able to open God's Word.

  5. So if you've got a Bible, it'd be great if you'd open it at Acts chapter 12 that we just had read for us.

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  6. That's what we're going to be thinking this morning.

  7. So as you get to the end of chapter 11 in Acts, we're told there's a famine coming.

  8. And when you get to chapter 12, the problems for the church there are not that there's going to be no food,

  9. but rather that there's no protection.

  10. They find themselves in this war zone here.

  11. And if you've been working your way through Acts, you know that Acts is full of this kind of opposition and persecution.

  12. Largely coming from the Jews, the Sanhedrin, the kind of leaders who put Jesus to death.

  13. But then now Herod, the kind of politician, is getting involved in the act.

  14. Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.

  15. He killed James.

  16. He proceeded to seize Peter also.

  17. This is the decapitation of the church that you're witnessing here.

  18. Now the obvious question to ask is, why is God allowing these things to happen?

  19. You might have the same question when you watch the news.

  20. Afghanistan, Myanmar, Yemen, Syria, the Ukraine.

  21. Why is God allowing this to happen?

  22. And Acts chapter 12 does give you a moment's pause, doesn't it?

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  23. David Attenborough, who's the great naturalist, was asked if he believed in God.

  24. He answered tentatively.

  25. He said, sometimes I stand beside a termite mound,

  26. and I wonder what knowledge they could have of me.

  27. Now it's not a ringing endorsement of the reality of God,

  28. but you can see what he's edging towards.

  29. The Bible opens with this statement.

  30. In the beginning, God created.

  31. And in that statement, you get a gulf that is far vaster than termite to human being.

  32. An infinite, eternal, omnipotent God.

  33. And my tiny, little, microscopic life,

  34. what knowledge would the termite have of God, of a human being?

  35. What of my knowledge of this infinite, eternal being?

  36. I've called this first part of the sermon today,

  37. The Uncertain Will of God.

  38. Now, if you want the kind of more classier description,

  39. it is the unsearchable will of God.

  40. But let's just talk about uncertainty for a moment or two.

  41. It doesn't mean that God's unpredictable, or that he's fickle,

  42. but it does mean we are not able to second-guess him

  43. when the Bible hasn't told us what to expect.

  44. Will he heal?

  45. Will he not heal?

  46. Will he intervene?

  47. Will he not intervene?

  48. James was killed with a sword.

  49. Peter was seized.

  50. Now, notice, will you, that we've given the time of year.

  51. Luke's a kind of precise historian, isn't he?

  52. And he just kind of puts in this date for us.

  53. He tells us that it happened, end of verse 3,

  54. during the festival of unleavened bread.

  55. And then he goes on to tell us that Peter's trial

  56. is slated for after the Passover.

  57. This is Easter.

  58. That's where we are.

  59. We're 12 years previously.

  60. This is AD 44.

  61. Maybe 14 years previously.

  62. Jesus was on trial.

  63. And prior to his trial, this is how he prayed.

  64. And going a little further, Jesus fell to the ground and prayed

  65. that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

  66. And he said,

  67. Abba Father, all things are possible for you.

  68. Remove this cup from me.

  69. Yet not what I will, but what you will.

  70. Now, you can hear the tension in those words, can't you?

  71. If it were possible.

  72. All things are possible for you.

  73. If the Son of God in his humanity struggled,

  74. how much more us?

  75. How much more people like us?

  76. And this passage poses two questions we're going to think about this morning.

  77. And the first question is this.

  78. How does it look, what does it look like to trust an unsearchable God?

  79. Or maybe put it slightly differently.

  80. What does faithful Christianity look like in a world where evil is real

  81. and you are uncertain of what God is planning?

  82. That's our world.

  83. That's where we live.

  84. Okay, look at verse 6.

  85. Verse 6 states, doesn't it?

  86. The night before Herod was to bring him, Peter, to trial,

  87. Peter was pacing the floor,

  88. trembling with anxiety,

  89. filled with fury at what happened to him.

  90. Not any of the above.

  91. Peter was.

  92. It's one of these great anti-climaxes in the Bible, isn't it?

  93. Sleeping.

  94. And I think you could almost insert the word soundly into that sentence

  95. in the light of the effort that has to be made to wake him up.

  96. It has to be slapped in the side to bring him to consciousness.

  97. Now, here's the thing.

  98. How can you sleep soundly when you know you're going to die?

  99. I think a lot of us would really like to know the answer to that question.

  100. How can you sleep soundly when you know you're going to die?

  101. Now, very helpfully, Peter, when he talked to the children this morning,

  102. took us back into that incident that took place in the Gospels on the boat.

  103. And we've had it unpacked for us.

  104. The storm.

  105. The disciples think they're going to die.

  106. Jesus is asleep.

  107. He gets up.

  108. He tells the wind to be quiet.

  109. Now, if you're reading Matthew's Gospel, just before that incident,

  110. Matthew tells us that a man came to Jesus and said,

  111. I will follow you wherever you go.

  112. And Jesus said to the guy,

  113. foxes of a hole, birds of the air of a nest,

  114. but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

  115. My home,

  116. my family,

  117. my money

  118. are the reassuring

  119. facts,

  120. factors about my life

  121. that gives me a sense that I'm in control.

  122. I've got a place to live.

  123. I've got some people that quite like me.

  124. I've got some cash we can manage.

  125. Right?

  126. I'm in control.

  127. Jesus takes his disciples

  128. onto the boat

  129. and into the storm

  130. to the place

  131. where it doesn't really matter

  132. if you've got a great house

  133. and loads of money in the bank.

  134. You are not in control.

  135. But hey,

  136. Jesus is in control.

  137. He can control the storm.

  138. He can keep us safe

  139. in the storm.

  140. That's a great bit of news.

  141. Jesus leads his people

  142. into the storm.

  143. Make no mistake,

  144. he will lead his people

  145. into the storm.

  146. Undoubtedly so.

  147. It's part of God's

  148. unsearchable ways.

  149. Illness

  150. or redundancy

  151. or bereavement

  152. or discrimination

  153. or whatever else

  154. you might like to think of.

  155. But Peter,

  156. Peter can sleep

  157. in the storm

  158. because he knows

  159. as Jesus

  160. has led him

  161. into this place.

  162. He will lead him

  163. through this place.

  164. You see,

  165. the thing about death is

  166. death is that

  167. terrible,

  168. terrible

  169. dead end.

  170. That horrible,

  171. horrible cul-de-sac

  172. that nobody knows

  173. what it's going to be like

  174. except Jesus

  175. who says to us

  176. even though

  177. we walk

  178. through the valley

  179. of the shadow of death,

  180. we should fear no evil

  181. for he will be with us

  182. and his rod and staff

  183. will come for us.

  184. Peter knew that.

  185. Now there's a second

  186. little aspect

  187. to this.

  188. Living in

  189. these unsearchable

  190. ways of God

  191. and it's the church

  192. that prays.

  193. Don't say Peter here

  194. as a solitary hero.

  195. Peter struggles with fear

  196. all the days

  197. of his life.

  198. It dogs his life

  199. verse 4.

  200. Herod sees Peter

  201. and put him in prison

  202. verse 5.

  203. Ernest prayer

  204. was made for him

  205. in the church

  206. and those two things

  207. are,

  208. they are closely linked.

  209. Peter slept

  210. because the church

  211. didn't sleep.

  212. Now this is not

  213. a perfect church.

  214. This is not a church

  215. that's kind of

  216. oh,

  217. we know what's going

  218. to happen here.

  219. That's why we're praying.

  220. You can see

  221. there's this

  222. lovely irony

  223. in the passage

  224. isn't there?

  225. Where this

  226. iron gate

  227. in the prison

  228. just kind of

  229. opens by itself

  230. but Peter

  231. can't get into

  232. the pyramid.

  233. Can't get the door

  234. to open

  235. because the people

  236. inside are not

  237. you know,

  238. they're not tuned in

  239. to everything

  240. that's going on.

  241. But make no mistake,

  242. their praying

  243. makes a difference

  244. and above all

  245. it makes a difference

  246. to Peter.

  247. Peter,

  248. or Jesus

  249. urged his disciples

  250. to pray with him

  251. and sadly

  252. they left him

  253. to sweat

  254. and agonise

  255. and wrestle

  256. alone.

  257. And I suspect

  258. there's

  259. a lot of that

  260. going on these days.

  261. These are not

  262. good days

  263. for commitment.

  264. People choose

  265. churches on the

  266. basis of the music

  267. or the preaching

  268. or the kids' work

  269. and feel liberty

  270. to opt out

  271. or in

  272. as these things

  273. are or aren't

  274. being delivered.

  275. Now that is

  276. a bad plan.

  277. Sooner or later

  278. you and I

  279. will find

  280. ourselves

  281. in the storm

  282. and we will

  283. need people

  284. to pray for us.

  285. Now this may not

  286. be the best reason

  287. for church membership

  288. but this much

  289. is true

  290. that the more

  291. deeply woven

  292. into the fabric

  293. of the church

  294. family we are

  295. the more we will

  296. benefit from the

  297. prayers of God's

  298. people.

  299. Not the best

  300. reason for being

  301. a church member

  302. but it's certainly

  303. an important reason.

  304. So here's how you

  305. trust in an

  306. unsearchable God.

  307. You trust him

  308. to lead you

  309. through the storm

  310. and you join

  311. the imperfect

  312. prayers of his

  313. people.

  314. Now let me

  315. switch your

  316. attention from

  317. the uncertainty

  318. to the certainty

  319. in this passage.

  320. So Acts 12

  321. is about

  322. powerful people

  323. pursuing

  324. their agendas.

  325. Herod,

  326. the Jews,

  327. increased their

  328. grip on power

  329. by raising

  330. their approval

  331. ratings.

  332. And that's

  333. what we see

  334. around our

  335. world,

  336. isn't it?

  337. Leaders and

  338. regimes

  339. squashing

  340. dissent,

  341. locking up

  342. those who

  343. don't agree

  344. with them.

  345. And it could

  346. be all those

  347. places we

  348. mentioned at

  349. the beginning.

  350. It could even

  351. be Scotland

  352. with its

  353. woke agenda.

  354. You don't

  355. want to upset

  356. these people.

  357. And these

  358. kind of

  359. pictures all

  360. too easily

  361. fill our

  362. minds with

  363. fear.

  364. You don't

  365. want to

  366. follow Herod

  367. or any

  368. of his

  369. many

  370. successors.

  371. But notice

  372. in this

  373. passage that

  374. there are

  375. two agendas,

  376. not just

  377. one.

  378. So it's not

  379. just Herod

  380. playing out

  381. his plans.

  382. We read

  383. of an

  384. angel.

  385. Well,

  386. maybe two

  387. angels,

  388. but there's

  389. certainly two

  390. incidents that

  391. concern angels.

  392. One who

  393. facilitates

  394. Peter's release

  395. and the other

  396. that brings

  397. Herod to the

  398. end of

  399. his life.

  400. And this

  401. section of

  402. Acts that

  403. was not

  404. written in

  405. chapters but

  406. in chunks

  407. runs through

  408. from 932 to

  409. chapter 1224.

  410. And there's a

  411. woman who's

  412. raised from

  413. the dead and

  414. there's a man

  415. who has a

  416. vision and

  417. there's a

  418. prophet who

  419. predicts that

  420. there's going

  421. to be a

  422. famine.

  423. And here's

  424. Luke's

  425. summary of

  426. what is

  427. really going

  428. on.

  429. So you

  430. look at

  431. verse 24

  432. and this

  433. is his

  434. little,

  435. let me tell

  436. you what's

  437. really happening

  438. here.

  439. But the

  440. word of

  441. God continued

  442. to spread

  443. and flourish.

  444. Here's the

  445. certain plan

  446. of God.

  447. Okay.

  448. So,

  449. which of

  450. these agendas

  451. has got

  452. your attention?

  453. Who's,

  454. which of

  455. these agendas

  456. are you

  457. investing in?

  458. there's one

  459. that's visible

  460. and you can

  461. see it around

  462. us here in

  463. this country

  464. and you can

  465. see it as

  466. you switch on

  467. the news,

  468. the agendas

  469. of the

  470. world or

  471. there's an

  472. agenda set out

  473. here in the

  474. scriptures.

  475. Now,

  476. let me draw

  477. your attention

  478. to a few

  479. aspects of

  480. what is true

  481. of God's

  482. agenda.

  483. Let's start

  484. with the

  485. grace of

  486. God.

  487. Now,

  488. one of the

  489. strange things

  490. about this

  491. chapter is

  492. why does

  493. Herod last

  494. until verse

  495. 23?

  496. Or,

  497. let me put it

  498. to you another

  499. way,

  500. is enjoying

  501. people's

  502. flattery worse

  503. than murdering

  504. somebody?

  505. Oh,

  506. why do you

  507. get struck

  508. down when

  509. he just

  510. kind of gets

  511. a bit carried

  512. away with

  513. the audience?

  514. Now,

  515. I made

  516. the point

  517. at the

  518. start that

  519. God's

  520. ways are

  521. not our

  522. ways,

  523. and that

  524. passage we

  525. read,

  526. we heard

  527. from Isaiah,

  528. Isaiah 55,

  529. is probably

  530. the clearest

  531. passage in

  532. the Bible

  533. that makes

  534. that point.

  535. For my

  536. thoughts are

  537. not your

  538. thoughts,

  539. neither are

  540. your ways my

  541. ways,

  542. declares the

  543. Lord,

  544. for as the

  545. heavens are

  546. high above

  547. the heavens,

  548. high above

  549. the earth,

  550. so are my

  551. ways above

  552. your ways.

  553. Now,

  554. what you need

  555. to know is

  556. the for,

  557. for my

  558. ways are

  559. not your

  560. ways.

  561. So,

  562. what has he

  563. just said

  564. that shows

  565. that his

  566. ways are

  567. not our

  568. ways?

  569. Listen to

  570. what it

  571. says,

  572. seek the

  573. Lord while

  574. he may be

  575. found,

  576. let the

  577. wicked forsake

  578. his way,

  579. and the

  580. unrighteous

  581. man his

  582. thoughts,

  583. let them

  584. return to

  585. the Lord

  586. that he

  587. may have

  588. compassion

  589. on him,

  590. and to

  591. our God

  592. for he

  593. will

  594. abundantly

  595. pardon.

  596. What's

  597. God been

  598. doing in

  599. Acts chapter

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  600. 12?

  601. He's been

  602. saying to

  603. this wicked,

  604. unrighteous

  605. king,

  606. seek the

  607. Lord.

  608. He's been

  609. saying it

  610. through his

  611. involvement with

  612. people like

  613. James and

  614. Peter and

  615. seeing the

  616. way they

  617. are,

  618. but above

  619. all,

  620. he's been

  621. doing it

  622. as he

  623. researches,

  624. as he

  625. scrutinizes

  626. this escape,

  627. as he

  628. thinks.

  629. It's got

  630. God's

  631. fingerprints

  632. all over

  633. the thing.

  634. The door

  635. just opened,

  636. the chains

  637. fell off.

  638. Do you

  639. hear?

  640. God is

  641. speaking into

  642. his life.

  643. Oh my

  644. goodness.

  645. God has

  646. been holding

  647. out his

  648. hands to

  649. this evil

  650. seek the

  651. Lord,

  652. turn,

  653. repent.

  654. so what

  655. is it

  656. that

  657. distinguishes

  658. God

  659. from

  660. me?

  661. The

  662. measure of

  663. his

  664. grace.

  665. If you

  666. listen to

  667. this and

  668. you're not

  669. a Christian,

  670. understand

  671. that your

  672. past,

  673. whatever

  674. your past

  675. has

  676. involved,

  677. does not

  678. disqualify

  679. you from

  680. knowing God

  681. as your

  682. father.

  683. let

  684. Herod

  685. encourage

  686. you to

  687. see that

  688. if God

  689. pursued

  690. this evil

  691. king,

  692. he is

  693. inviting you

  694. to seek

  695. him.

  696. But let

  697. Herod also

  698. be a

  699. warning.

  700. The window

  701. of opportunity

  702. does not

  703. remain open

  704. forever.

  705. Seek the

  706. Lord while

  707. he may be

  708. found.

  709. When you

  710. go to

  711. 24,

  712. you can't

  713. find him

  714. anymore.

  715. It's too

  716. late.

  717. There is a

  718. too late.

  719. And if

  720. you're a

  721. Christian,

  722. remember,

  723. it's not

  724. for us

  725. to decide

  726. who God

  727. is going

  728. to hold

  729. his hands

  730. out to.

  731. In Luke's

  732. first volume,

  733. Luke 23,

  734. Jesus shows

  735. mercy to a

  736. criminal who's

  737. dying beside

  738. him.

  739. In Luke's

  740. second volume

  741. in Acts

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  742. chapter 9,

  743. he shows

  744. mercy to the

  745. chief of

  746. sinners.

  747. It kind

  748. of blows

  749. away the

  750. whole idea

  751. of worthiness,

  752. doesn't it?

  753. God's

  754. ways really

  755. aren't our

  756. ways.

  757. The gospel

  758. is God's

  759. unstoppable

  760. mission to

  761. deliver compassion

  762. and pardon to

  763. the wicked and

  764. the unrighteous.

  765. Are you in

  766. step with

  767. that?

  768. Really?

  769. Or are

  770. there some

  771. people that

  772. you go,

  773. nah,

  774. not him.

  775. Second

  776. thing,

  777. the

  778. pastor of

  779. Jesus.

  780. verse 17

  781. ends by

  782. telling us

  783. that Peter

  784. departed and

  785. went to

  786. another place.

  787. Now,

  788. as you know,

  789. up to this

  790. point,

  791. Peter has

  792. been the

  793. leader of

  794. the church.

  795. He's the

  796. rock that

  797. Jesus spoke

  798. of.

  799. He's

  800. preached

  801. those great

  802. sermons

  803. in Acts.

  804. He's

  805. operated the

  806. keys that

  807. let the

  808. Gentiles

  809. into the

  810. church.

  811. But now

  812. that's it.

  813. You almost

  814. hear nothing

  815. else of

  816. Peter in

  817. the rest

  818. of Acts.

  819. get a

  820. glimpse of

  821. him in

  822. 15.

  823. But he's

  824. getting off

  825. the stage.

  826. He's

  827. vacating the

  828. platform.

  829. He's

  830. stepping down.

  831. Another guy

  832. called

  833. Saul,

  834. Paul,

  835. is going

  836. to become

  837. the main

  838. person

  839. from here

  840. on.

  841. And

  842. Peter's

  843. okay with

  844. that.

  845. He

  846. leaves

  847. for another

  848. place,

  849. a less

  850. significant

  851. place,

  852. a less

  853. prominent

  854. place.

  855. here's

  856. how life

  857. normally

  858. works.

  859. Okay?

  860. You would

  861. describe it

  862. the normal

  863. direction of

  864. travel is

  865. to be

  866. upwardly

  867. mobile.

  868. You get a

  869. slightly better

  870. house.

  871. You might

  872. get a

  873. better car.

  874. You get a

  875. little bit

  876. of a step

  877. up at

  878. work.

  879. You have

  880. a little

  881. bit more

  882. dough.

  883. You go

  884. on slightly

  885. better

  886. holidays.

  887. That's

  888. the usual

  889. direction

  890. of travel.

  891. Though

  892. he was

  893. in the

  894. form of

  895. God,

  896. he did

  897. not count

  898. equality a

  899. thing to

  900. be grasped,

  901. but emptied

  902. himself,

  903. taking the

  904. form of a

  905. servant.

  906. Do you

  907. see where

  908. Jesus is

  909. going?

  910. Downward

  911. mobility.

  912. So he

  913. associates

  914. with the

  915. marginalized,

  916. the lepers

  917. and the

  918. beggars.

  919. He mixes

  920. with the

  921. despised

  922. tax collectors

  923. and prostitutes.

  924. And these

  925. things trash

  926. his reputation.

  927. They

  928. ultimately,

  929. they give him

  930. a place

  931. among the

  932. criminals to

  933. die.

  934. But of

  935. course,

  936. you see,

  937. this is the

  938. thing,

  939. isn't it?

  940. Jesus is

  941. not pursuing

  942. his own

  943. agenda.

  944. He isn't

  945. asking what

  946. he would

  947. enjoy doing.

  948. What would

  949. I like to

  950. do?

  951. He's

  952. serving his

  953. father's

  954. plan.

  955. He's

  956. looking for

  957. his father's

  958. approval.

  959. And Peter

  960. is heading in

  961. the same

  962. direction.

  963. Out of the

  964. limelight,

  965. off the

  966. platform,

  967. down into

  968. some less

  969. prominent but

  970. no less

  971. significant

  972. ministry.

  973. the

  974. progress of

  975. the

  976. gospel or

  977. the

  978. progress of

  979. me,

  980. my agenda

  981. or his

  982. agenda.

  983. Those are the

  984. kind of

  985. choices that

  986. we have.

  987. Now,

  988. it's about

  989. our thinking.

  990. It's about an

  991. attitude in

  992. our minds.

  993. So we're

  994. all used to

  995. seeing the

  996. images of

  997. the Ukrainian

  998. president,

  999. Zelensky,

  1000. with his

  1001. kind of

  1002. five o'clock

  1003. shadow and

  1004. his battle

  1005. fatigues as

  1006. if he's just

  1007. come off

  1008. patrol.

  1009. And there's

  1010. something entirely

  1011. appropriate about

  1012. that, of course,

  1013. isn't there?

  1014. There's a war

  1015. on.

  1016. You don't

  1017. expect to see

  1018. him walking

  1019. down a red

  1020. carpet to get

  1021. into a big

  1022. stretch limo where

  1023. somebody opens

  1024. the door for

  1025. him.

  1026. You think,

  1027. no, no, no,

  1028. that's all

  1029. wrong.

  1030. Peter had

  1031. that wartime

  1032. mentality.

  1033. As he heads

  1034. off to play

  1035. a different

  1036. part that

  1037. his commanding

  1038. officer has

  1039. just assigned

  1040. him to,

  1041. and

  1042. consequently,

  1043. the word of

  1044. God increases

  1045. and multiplies.

  1046. I'm going to

  1047. say one other

  1048. thing.

  1049. This is the

  1050. certain plan of

  1051. God.

  1052. This is how

  1053. it happens

  1054. as we start

  1055. to get in

  1056. step with

  1057. the grace

  1058. of God

  1059. that reaches

  1060. down to

  1061. the wicked

  1062. and the

  1063. unrighteous.

  1064. As we

  1065. start to be

  1066. ready to

  1067. step down,

  1068. down,

  1069. down,

  1070. down.

  1071. And then

  1072. clearly,

  1073. as we

  1074. cooperate and

  1075. participate in

  1076. the prayers of

  1077. the church.

  1078. So twice in

  1079. this chapter,

  1080. we're reminded

  1081. of the prayer

  1082. meeting.

  1083. Verse 4,

  1084. verse 12.

  1085. And we

  1086. are most

  1087. certainly meant

  1088. to make that

  1089. connection

  1090. between the

  1091. prayer of the

  1092. church and

  1093. the progress

  1094. of the

  1095. gospel.

  1096. Listen to

  1097. what Jesus

  1098. said on

  1099. those two

  1100. subjects.

  1101. truly I say

  1102. to you,

  1103. whoever says

  1104. to this

  1105. mountain,

  1106. be taken

  1107. up and

  1108. thrown into

  1109. the sea and

  1110. does not

  1111. doubt in

  1112. their heart,

  1113. but believes

  1114. that what

  1115. they say

  1116. will come

  1117. to pass,

  1118. it will be

  1119. done for

  1120. him.

  1121. Therefore,

  1122. whatever you

  1123. ask in

  1124. prayer,

  1125. believe that

  1126. you have

  1127. received it

  1128. and it

  1129. will be

  1130. yours.

  1131. Now,

  1132. Jesus spoke

  1133. those words

  1134. just after

  1135. he had

  1136. driven the

  1137. traders out

  1138. of the

  1139. temple and

  1140. he had

  1141. pronounced

  1142. judgment on

  1143. Jerusalem's

  1144. religion by

  1145. means of

  1146. the fig tree.

  1147. Curse the

  1148. fig tree,

  1149. died,

  1150. withered,

  1151. boom.

  1152. Jesus is

  1153. referring here

  1154. in this

  1155. section to

  1156. Jerusalem when

  1157. he says,

  1158. whoever says,

  1159. he didn't

  1160. say,

  1161. whoever says

  1162. to a

  1163. mountain,

  1164. he said,

  1165. whoever

  1166. says to

  1167. this

  1168. mountain,

  1169. the mountain

  1170. is Jerusalem.

  1171. Okay.

  1172. Now,

  1173. the book of

  1174. Acts shows

  1175. you that

  1176. Jerusalem is

  1177. a massive

  1178. obstacle to

  1179. the progress

  1180. of the

  1181. church.

  1182. They're

  1183. trying to

  1184. dampen

  1185. the

  1186. enthusiasm,

  1187. they're

  1188. trying to

  1189. kill their

  1190. leaders,

  1191. they're

  1192. trying to

  1193. crush the

  1194. whole thing

  1195. at the

  1196. outset.

  1197. Now,

  1198. if you've

  1199. been around

  1200. in Jerusalem

  1201. in those

  1202. days,

  1203. and you'd

  1204. seen the

  1205. Sanhedrin

  1206. and the

  1207. Pharisees

  1208. who control

  1209. the police

  1210. and who run

  1211. the courts

  1212. and who've

  1213. got the

  1214. ear of the

  1215. Roman

  1216. governor,

  1217. and you've

  1218. got Jesus

  1219. and his

  1220. little band

  1221. of followers,

  1222. and you've

  1223. been asked,

  1224. which one of

  1225. these two do

  1226. you think

  1227. will survive?

  1228. I don't

  1229. think it

  1230. would have

  1231. been a

  1232. hard question

  1233. to answer.

  1234. But within

  1235. 40 years

  1236. of the

  1237. death of

  1238. Jesus,

  1239. the mountain

  1240. has been

  1241. moved out

  1242. the road.

  1243. Judaism

  1244. is no

  1245. longer the

  1246. threat that

  1247. it was to

  1248. the church

  1249. and the

  1250. progress of

  1251. the gospel

  1252. goes on

  1253. to the

  1254. world.

  1255. Come with

  1256. me to

  1257. the 16th

  1258. century.

  1259. 16th

  1260. century,

  1261. the church

  1262. is moribund.

  1263. The medieval

  1264. church is

  1265. just a

  1266. mass of

  1267. money-making

  1268. schemes.

  1269. And a

  1270. friar called

  1271. Martin Luther

  1272. in a

  1273. backwater

  1274. called

  1275. Wittenberg

  1276. in Germany

  1277. rediscovers

  1278. the gospel

  1279. and stands

  1280. against the

  1281. Pope and

  1282. the Holy

  1283. Roman

  1284. Empire.

  1285. Not

  1286. alone,

  1287. but

  1288. pretty much

  1289. alone.

  1290. And God

  1291. moves this

  1292. mountain out

  1293. of the

  1294. way.

  1295. We've

  1296. heard today

  1297. about

  1298. Romania.

  1299. Go back

  1300. just over

  1301. 35 years

  1302. and you

  1303. would not

  1304. have heard

  1305. that kind

  1306. of report

  1307. in church.

  1308. Go back

  1309. to the

  1310. bad old

  1311. days of

  1312. the 70s

  1313. and the

  1314. Soviet

  1315. Union

  1316. and Romania

  1317. under the

  1318. rule of

  1319. Ceausescu

  1320. and nobody's

  1321. setting up

  1322. these kind

  1323. of places.

  1324. It's all

  1325. underground.

  1326. Oh,

  1327. the gospel's

  1328. there,

  1329. but it's

  1330. underground.

  1331. 1989,

  1332. the mountain

  1333. moves.

  1334. mountain

  1335. that you

  1336. and I

  1337. are

  1338. conscious

  1339. of

  1340. today

  1341. is

  1342. Islam.

  1343. Some of

  1344. you may

  1345. have read

  1346. or heard

  1347. of a

  1348. book

  1349. written by

  1350. David

  1351. Garrison

  1352. called

  1353. The Wind

  1354. in the

  1355. House of

  1356. the House

  1357. of Islam.

  1358. It's

  1359. quite a

  1360. challenging

  1361. book to

  1362. read because

  1363. it's got

  1364. so many

  1365. statistics

  1366. in it.

  1367. It's so

  1368. carefully

  1369. researched.

  1370. Garrison

  1371. has

  1372. noted that

  1373. there's been

  1374. 82

  1375. movements

  1376. in the

  1377. entire

  1378. history of

  1379. Islam

  1380. from 600

  1381. AD

  1382. to the

  1383. present.

  1384. Now,

  1385. a movement

  1386. in

  1387. Garrison's

  1388. research

  1389. is

  1390. a

  1391. thousand

  1392. baptized

  1393. believers

  1394. or a

  1395. hundred

  1396. churches

  1397. planted.

  1398. That's a

  1399. movement,

  1400. either or.

  1401. Thousand

  1402. baptized

  1403. believers,

  1404. hundred

  1405. churches

  1406. planted.

  1407. Now,

  1408. there have

  1409. only been

  1410. 82 in

  1411. the whole

  1412. of the

  1413. life of

  1414. Islam,

  1415. but 69

  1416. of those

  1417. movements

  1418. have taken

  1419. place between

  1420. 2000 and

  1421. 2012.

  1422. There has

  1423. never been

  1424. a time

  1425. in history

  1426. where more

  1427. Muslims are

  1428. coming to

  1429. Christ than

  1430. today.

  1431. On the

  1432. eve of the

  1433. 79 Islamic

  1434. Revolution in

  1435. Iran,

  1436. there were

  1437. reckoned to

  1438. be no more

  1439. than 500

  1440. Muslim

  1441. background

  1442. believers

  1443. in a

  1444. nation of

  1445. 40 million.

  1446. Forty years

  1447. later,

  1448. there are

  1449. hundreds of

  1450. thousands of

  1451. Iranian

  1452. Muslims who

  1453. have given

  1454. their lives

  1455. to Christ.

  1456. Now,

  1457. be clear,

  1458. this is

  1459. still a

  1460. small

  1461. percentage of

  1462. a huge

  1463. empire.

  1464. I think

  1465. there's

  1466. 1.9

  1467. billion Muslims

  1468. in the

  1469. world.

  1470. And there

  1471. are pockets,

  1472. so he

  1473. talks about

  1474. this house

  1475. of Islam

  1476. in terms

  1477. of rooms,

  1478. different

  1479. parts of

  1480. the world,

  1481. and there

  1482. are some

  1483. parts of

  1484. the world

  1485. where there

  1486. is very

  1487. little

  1488. happening.

  1489. But

  1490. central to

  1491. that

  1492. progress

  1493. are the

  1494. prayers of

  1495. God's

  1496. people.

  1497. So let

  1498. me end,

  1499. I'm going

  1500. to finish

  1501. with this,

  1502. I'm going

  1503. to end

  1504. with this.

  1505. Here's the

  1506. question that

  1507. all this

  1508. poses for

  1509. us,

  1510. okay,

  1511. very simple

  1512. question.

  1513. Would you

  1514. have been at

  1515. the prayer

  1516. meeting?

  1517. Will you be

  1518. at the prayer

  1519. meeting?

  1520. Let me pray,

  1521. then we're

  1522. going to sing.

  1523. Heavenly Father,

  1524. thank you

  1525. for helping

  1526. us to live

  1527. in a world

  1528. of uncertainty,

  1529. to know

  1530. how to

  1531. sleep in

  1532. the storm.

  1533. Thank you,

  1534. Lord God,

  1535. that you

  1536. are

  1537. outstandingly

  1538. gracious

  1539. to the

  1540. wicked

  1541. and to

  1542. the

  1543. unrighteous.

  1544. We pray,

  1545. Lord,

  1546. that you

  1547. would help

  1548. us as we

  1549. seek to

  1550. invest in

  1551. your agenda

  1552. and walk

  1553. in step

  1554. with your

  1555. plans.

  1556. We ask

  1557. this for

  1558. Jesus'

  1559. sake.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. Amen.
