  1. Thank you, Abby.

  2. Well, folks, as we dive into those passages,

  3. before we do so, let us pray together.

  4. Let's pray.

  5. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the wonderful privilege

  6. it is to gather around your word again this evening.

  7. And Lord, I pray that as we do so,

  8. you would soften our hearts, open our ears.

  9. And may the words of my mouth

  10. and the meditations of all of our hearts

  11. be pleasing to you, our rock and our redeemer.

  12. Amen.

  13. Amen.

  14. Have you ever had a movie recommended to you?

  15. You know those movie recommendations.

  16. People give you just enough details of the plot line

  17. and the events that happen that you are invested.

  18. You are hooked.

  19. Your interest is piqued.

  20. And they point out different parts of the movie

  21. that they'll think you will enjoy.

  22. And so you eagerly go down to the cinema

  23. or if you're like me, you find it on Netflix

  24. and you settle in to watch it.

  25. For me recently, it was The Revenant.

  26. Maybe for you, it was Inception or The Matrix.

  27. I'm not endorsing any of those movies.

  28. But for most of us, if not all of us,

  29. have been in that situation, haven't we?

  30. So you've got your popcorn,

  31. you've got your drink of choice,

  32. and you are committed to this movie.

  33. But as it goes on,

  34. you find out that it's actually completely different

  35. from what you're expecting.

  36. You'd been sold a superficial run-through

  37. of a plot line that was actually really, really complex.

  38. And so you leave the cinema confused,

  39. thinking you've wasted your time and your money

  40. and you're trying to connect the dots in your head

  41. of what you've just seen.

  42. You were sold a simple story,

  43. but it turned out to be very complex.

  44. That is the book of Jonah.

  45. See, as we start this series,

  46. maybe you're expecting to hear a lot about a big fish.

  47. Maybe you're expecting us preachers to stand up here

  48. and say, Jonah is a bad man.

  49. Don't be like him.

  50. Or maybe you've got images of children's story Bibles

  51. that make this story seem very, very simple.

  52. Well, the longer I've studied Jonah over the last few months,

  53. the more confusing I found it.

  54. See, on one level, this story is simple

  55. and a child can pick up the book of Jonah

  56. and read it and get something from it.

  57. But when you get into the details of the book,

  58. it really isn't that straightforward.

  59. And that's why tonight we're going to do

  60. an introductory sermon,

  61. thinking about Jonah and his background,

  62. giving a bit of an overview of the book,

  63. and then some of the specific challenges

  64. that it brings us today.

  65. And as we go through this series,

  66. what I want us to do is forget everything we know

  67. about the book of Jonah.

  68. And instead, let the text of God's word inform our minds,

  69. challenge our hearts, and impact our lives.

  70. See, this book will both convict and comfort us

  71. as it presents us with its main message,

  72. which the Lord saves.

  73. So the first thing I want us to consider tonight

  74. is Jonah's background.

  75. Look at Jonah chapter one, verse one.

  76. It says,

  77. The word of the Lord came to Jonah, son of Amittai.

  78. We get a little bit of more information about Jonah

  79. as Abby read to us in 2 Kings chapter 14.

    2 Kings 14 chapter mention

  80. If you turn there in your Bibles,

  81. we'll spend a little bit of time there.

  82. See, this passage introduces us to the prophet Jonah

  83. and helps us see the context and background

  84. that he's coming from.

  85. Now, knowing someone's background

  86. helps us make sense of their present actions, doesn't it?

  87. I'll give you a silly example of this.

  88. Sabina and I have a friend

  89. who makes spaghetti bolognese

  90. in the most bizarre way I've ever seen.

  91. So once the meat is cooked and everything,

  92. they blend it with a soup mixer

  93. into some kind of strange, chunky, smooth sauce.

  94. And now it's perfectly fine

  95. if you have a gag reflex at that

  96. because I know we did when we first heard it.

  97. Now, when I heard that,

  98. I thought it was unbelievably strange.

  99. But when she explained

  100. that that's how her parents had done it,

  101. that's how they taught her

  102. how to cook spaghetti bolognese,

  103. it made sense.

  104. Background is important.

  105. And the same is true for Jonah.

  106. We need to see his background

  107. to understand why he acts the way he does

  108. in this, in the book of Jonah.

  109. So in 2 Kings 14, verse 23,

    2 Kings 14:23

  110. we're introduced to the king of Israel.

  111. Read it with me.

  112. In the 15th year of Amaziah, son of Joash,

  113. king of Judah,

  114. Jeroboam, son of Jehoiash, king of Israel,

  115. became king in Samaria,

  116. and he reigned 41 years.

  117. Jeroboam II was the most significant political king

  118. of the northern tribe of Israel.

  119. Now, you've got to remember the history

  120. of the Old Testament here.

  121. After King Solomon died,

  122. the 12 tribes of Israel split,

  123. 10 remaining in the north,

  124. which then became known as the country of Israel,

  125. and two in the south, known as Judah.

  126. The southern kingdom included Israel.

  127. They had the temple,

  128. and they were the more faithful of the two,

  129. but by no means perfect.

  130. They were captured and taken into captivity

  131. to Babylon first.

  132. But the northern kingdom,

  133. where Jeroboam was king

  134. and where Jonah was prophet,

  135. that was a whole different story.

  136. As you read the book of Kings,

  137. you'll see time and time again

  138. that repeated phrase,

  139. as it does here in verse 24,

  140. the king did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  141. Now, Jeroboam II led Israel

  142. in a time of prosperity,

  143. but it was also a rocky time

  144. because of the idolatry

  145. that had taken root in their country

  146. and in the hearts of its people.

  147. See, the tribes of Israel

  148. were told to travel to the temple in Jerusalem

  149. where they were to worship God.

  150. But in a political move,

  151. Jeroboam II set up two golden calves

  152. and shrines,

  153. one in the north and one in the south

  154. of the kingdom of Israel.

  155. Private places of worship

  156. and golden calves,

  157. two things that should send alarm bells ringing

  158. in our minds for the nation of Israel.

  159. And as yeast spreads through bread,

  160. impacting every part of it,

  161. so the yeast of idolatry

  162. has taken a hold of this nation.

  163. It was a religious melting pot of ideas

  164. that stood against everything

  165. God had commanded his people to do.

  166. And that's the context Jonah was in,

  167. a land of prosperity and idolatry.

  168. And yet God was still working

  169. and the expansion of this kingdom

  170. was his doing.

  171. Look at verse 25.

  172. The expansion of the kingdom,

  173. it was done in accordance

  174. with the word of the Lord,

  175. the God of Israel,

  176. spoken through his servant Jonah,

  177. son of Amittai,

  178. the prophet from Gath-Hefer.

  179. It was Jonah who communicated

  180. God's will to this evil king

  181. to lead the northern country of Israel

  182. in their prosperity.

  183. All of it is God's will.

  184. And then in verse 26,

  185. it says,

  186. the Lord had seen how bitterly

  187. everyone in Israel,

  188. whether slave or free,

  189. was suffering.

  190. There was no one to help them

  191. and since the Lord had not said

  192. he would blot out the name of Israel

  193. from under heaven,

  194. he saved them by the hand

  195. of Jeroboam,

  196. son of Jehoiash.

  197. God was the one who put Jeroboam

  198. on the throne.

  199. Prior to his rule,

  200. Israel was suffering.

  201. It was poor.

  202. It was neglected.

  203. So God delivered them

  204. by giving them this king.

  205. And this teaches us

  206. that God can be at work

  207. and ultimately use things,

  208. people,

  209. and nations

  210. that are evil

  211. for his own good purposes

  212. and to fulfill

  213. his own good plan.

  214. We may not understand that.

  215. We certainly probably all

  216. have questions

  217. about how that works

  218. as we think of examples

  219. in our minds.

  220. But that's the reality

  221. of what this passage teaches us.

  222. God can use

  223. all things,

  224. even evil things,

  225. for his good.

  226. God is compassionate

  227. to the rebellious

  228. people of Israel.

  229. So whilst we may not

  230. understand it fully,

  231. it is a wonderful thing

  232. because it is that same

  233. compassion of God

  234. that results in sinners

  235. like you and like me

  236. having the opportunity

  237. to hear the gospel

  238. and to be made right

  239. with God.

  240. So Jonah was a prophet

  241. to Jeroboam II.

  242. And in verse 25,

  243. he's mentioned

  244. a little bit like

  245. a prophet of the court,

  246. a prophet of God

  247. who would advise

  248. the king

  249. or the government

  250. on matters

  251. and be a voice of reason.

  252. So Jonah lived

  253. a very comfortable life.

  254. He had a place

  255. of power

  256. and honor

  257. in the courtroom

  258. of an evil king.

  259. But he wasn't

  260. the only prophet

  261. active at this time.

  262. Amos and Hosea

  263. were active

  264. at the same time.

  265. And if you read

  266. their books

  267. in the Old Testament,

  268. which I'd encourage you

  269. to do,

  270. you'll see that

  271. they spoke very,

  272. very bluntly

  273. against the idolatry

  274. going on

  275. in the northern kingdom

  276. of Israel.

  277. But not Jonah.

  278. So we have no indication

  279. that he spoke

  280. against idolatry.

  281. And what we do know

  282. of him

  283. from the book of Jonah

  284. doesn't really fill us

  285. with confidence,

  286. does it?

  287. A prophet of God

  288. who might not be

  289. promoting idolatry,

  290. but he is idly

  291. standing by

  292. and he is present

  293. when it's happening.

  294. He doesn't seem

  295. to be calling it

  296. to stop.

  297. Could it be

  298. that the comfort

  299. Jonah enjoyed

  300. in Israel

  301. under Jeroboam II

  302. has led

  303. to spiritual

  304. lukewarmness?

  305. Look at the places

  306. in the world

  307. where there is largely

  308. peace and prosperity.

  309. They are generally

  310. the places

  311. that are also

  312. spiritually lukewarm.

  313. And those places

  314. in the world

  315. where the church

  316. is growing

  317. and thriving

  318. are often

  319. the places

  320. where peace

  321. and plenty

  322. are not the norm.

  323. So the reality

  324. of our human hearts

  325. is that when we

  326. get comfortable

  327. in life,

  328. when things

  329. are going well

  330. for us,

  331. we assume

  332. that we have

  333. the Lord's favour.

  334. Jeroboam

  335. and Israel

  336. show us

  337. that that isn't

  338. always true.

  339. They had peace

  340. and plenty

  341. and yet they were

  342. still seen

  343. as evil

  344. in God's sight.

  345. Now there are

  346. two challenges

  347. for us today

  348. as we think

  349. about Jonah's

  350. background.

  351. The first

  352. is that a nation

  353. can be prosperous.

  354. It can be

  355. a place

  356. of peace

  357. and plenty

  358. and still

  359. be evil

  360. in the Lord's eyes.

  361. Think

  362. of our home.

  363. In times

  364. when our nation

  365. is prospering

  366. which it has

  367. been doing

  368. for a very

  369. long time,

  370. we might

  371. be tempted

  372. to be proud

  373. and think

  374. that we're

  375. blessed by God.

  376. We must be

  377. doing something

  378. right or

  379. we must be

  380. something special.

  381. We do that

  382. on a national

  383. level but we

  384. do it

  385. in our

  386. individual

  387. lives too,

  388. don't we?

  389. We speak

  390. a lot about

  391. idolatry in our

  392. own hearts,

  393. things that we

  394. worship,

  395. the bigger

  396. bank balance,

  397. the bigger

  398. house,

  399. the faster

  400. car,

  401. the newest

  402. phone.

  403. We always

  404. want more

  405. and we

  406. never seem

  407. to have

  408. enough.

  409. We're so

  410. focused on

  411. the temporary

  412. things of

  413. this life

  414. that we

  415. forget about

  416. the important

  417. and eternal

  418. things that

  419. really matter.

  420. See,

  421. in comfort

  422. it's easy

  423. to neglect

  424. our spiritual

  425. welfare.

  426. Maybe you

  427. think you're

  428. fine because

  429. you're living

  430. in a lovely

  431. city,

  432. because you're

  433. going to

  434. church every

  435. Sunday,

  436. you're doing

  437. and saying

  438. all the

  439. right things

  440. in front

  441. of people,

  442. you have

  443. the outward

  444. appearance

  445. that everything

  446. is fine,

  447. but inside

  448. you're spiritually

  449. anemic.

  450. Could we

  451. be doing

  452. our normal

  453. routine and

  454. still be

  455. called evil

  456. in the

  457. Lord's

  458. sight?

  459. Now we

  460. must understand

  461. that a

  462. Christian is

  463. secure in

  464. Christ because

  465. it is God

  466. who saves.

  467. Not our

  468. morality,

  469. not our

  470. religiosity.

  471. Jesus and

  472. his sacrifice

  473. are the only

  474. way that a

  475. person can

  476. be saved

  477. and that

  478. salvation is

  479. secure in

  480. him.

  481. But we

  482. must challenge

  483. ourselves and

  484. ask if we're

  485. just going

  486. through the

  487. motions or

  488. are we truly

  489. following Christ?

  490. So the

  491. book of Jonah

  492. should act as

  493. a warning not

  494. to become

  495. comfortable and

  496. reject faithful

  497. devotion to

  498. God.

  499. But the

  500. second challenge

  501. that it

  502. brings to

  503. us is we

  504. need to ask

  505. ourselves if

  506. we are like

  507. Jonah.

  508. If we're

  509. blending in.

  510. If we're

  511. being so

  512. influenced,

  513. if we're being

  514. influenced more

  515. by our

  516. surroundings than

  517. we are by what

  518. God has revealed

  519. to us in his

  520. word.

  521. Whose agenda

  522. are we

  523. following?

  524. have we

  525. become so

  526. comfortable in

  527. this world that

  528. we no longer

  529. stand out?

  530. We blend in

  531. so much that

  532. people don't

  533. even know we're

  534. Christians.

  535. Do your

  536. community,

  537. your family,

  538. our friends,

  539. our work

  540. colleagues notice

  541. a difference in

  542. the way that we

  543. live, the way

  544. that we talk,

  545. the way that we

  546. think and the

  547. way we approach

  548. people?

  549. Do they see

  550. a fundamental

  551. difference that

  552. we are living

  553. for something,

  554. for someone

  555. else?

  556. So our lives

  557. as Christians

  558. shouldn't be,

  559. should be

  560. counter-cultural,

  561. not cultural

  562. conformists.

  563. That's Jonah's

  564. background.

  565. He was a

  566. prophet in a

  567. rebellious nation

  568. under a

  569. rebellious king

  570. who lived a

  571. life of peace,

  572. plenty,

  573. and promise.

  574. dominants.

  575. The second

  576. thing I want

  577. us to think

  578. about this

  579. evening is

  580. Jonah's book.

  581. Now turn back

  582. with me to the

  583. book of Jonah.

  584. And the big

  585. question we need

  586. to ask when we

  587. come to any

  588. book of the

  589. Bible is,

  590. who was it

  591. written by,

  592. and who was

  593. it written for?

  594. Now we aren't

  595. told who wrote

  596. it, but there

  597. are details in

  598. this book that

  599. only Jonah

  600. himself would

  601. know.

  602. So personally,

  603. I think this

  604. book was written

  605. by Jonah after

  606. the events,

  607. after everything

  608. had taken

  609. place.

  610. So Jonah was

  611. written to the

  612. Israelites, the

  613. people that we

  614. were just

  615. thinking about in

  616. Jonah's background.

  617. Let me tell you

  618. why I think

  619. this.

  620. As you go

  621. through the

  622. book, you'll

  623. see that Jonah

  624. has certain

  625. ideas about who

  626. and where,

  627. to who,

  628. sorry, and

  629. where God's

  630. love and mercy

  631. should be shown.

  632. And the

  633. whole point of

  634. this book is

  635. to help the

  636. readers see that

  637. God's love,

  638. God's compassion

  639. is not limited to

  640. a certain people

  641. in a certain

  642. place, but it

  643. extends far,

  644. far wider than

  645. we can even

  646. begin to

  647. imagine.

  648. So if you're

  649. looking for a

  650. statement that

  651. summarizes Jonah

  652. and this sermon

  653. series, it is

  654. that the Lord

  655. saves.

  656. Let's dive into

  657. the specifics of

  658. the book itself.

  659. See, Jonah's

  660. one of those

  661. books that most

  662. people who've

  663. spent any time

  664. in church at

  665. all will have

  666. heard it.

  667. Children's

  668. Bible story

  669. books will

  670. normally have a

  671. story about it,

  672. but do we

  673. really understand

  674. what this book

  675. teaches?

  676. For example,

  677. most of you,

  678. when you think

  679. about the book

  680. of Jonah,

  681. will think,

  682. and hopefully

  683. you can engage

  684. with me a little

  685. bit and join in

  686. and finish this

  687. sentence for me,

  688. Jonah and the

  689. whale.

  690. Jonah or the

  691. big fish.

  692. That's immediately

  693. what we think

  694. about, isn't

  695. it?

  696. Well, Jonah has

  697. four chapters.

  698. It is made up

  699. of 48 verses,

  700. and guess how

  701. many of those

  702. are dedicated

  703. to the fish?

  704. Two.

  705. Jonah 1.17.

  706. Now the Lord

  707. provided a huge

  708. fish to swallow

  709. Jonah, and Jonah

  710. was in the belly

  711. of the fish three

  712. days and three

  713. nights.

  714. And then in

  715. chapters 2,

  716. verse 10,

  717. and the Lord

  718. commanded the

  719. fish and it

  720. vomited Jonah

  721. onto dry ground.

  722. One mentioned

  723. when Jonah was

  724. swallowed and the

  725. next when he was

  726. spat out on the

  727. sea, on the

  728. beach.

  729. See, I don't

  730. think, I don't

  731. know, I don't

  732. think we know

  733. this book as well

  734. as we think we

  735. do.

  736. Because we

  737. associate it with

  738. an event that's

  739. actually only

  740. mentioned twice,

  741. or referenced

  742. twice, and in

  743. passing at that.

  744. So what I want

  745. us to do is

  746. forget everything

  747. we know about

  748. Jonah and

  749. have the Bible

  750. inform our

  751. understanding of

  752. it.

  753. See, the book

  754. can be summarized

  755. like this.

  756. God tells Jonah

  757. to go to a

  758. scary people,

  759. the Ninevites.

  760. Jonah runs the

  761. opposite way.

  762. Prophet goes to

  763. the sea, he's

  764. eaten by a

  765. fish.

  766. Jonah repents

  767. in that fish

  768. and is puked up

  769. on the beach.

  770. Jonah goes to

  771. the bad people

  772. of Nineveh.

  773. They repent.

  774. Jonah is

  775. angry.

  776. And so

  777. usually the

  778. application that

  779. people come to

  780. when they read

  781. Jonah is, Jonah

  782. is a bad

  783. racist man.

  784. Do not be

  785. like Jonah.

  786. But that

  787. doesn't quite

  788. fit.

  789. Because in the

  790. New Testament,

  791. in Luke 11,

  792. Jesus compares

  793. himself to

  794. Jonah.

  795. So surely

  796. we can't say

  797. that Jonah is

  798. bad and we

  799. shouldn't be

  800. like him.

  801. This book

  802. does raise a

  803. lot of

  804. questions that

  805. we'll get

  806. to over the

  807. next four

  808. weeks.

  809. Questions like

  810. why is

  811. Jonah so

  812. angry, both

  813. of the

  814. Ninevites and

  815. at God?

  816. Why exactly

  817. didn't he want

  818. to go to the

  819. Ninevites?

  820. What are his

  821. motives behind

  822. all of this?

  823. Why does this

  824. book end the

  825. way it does?

  826. See, Jonah

  827. isn't like any

  828. other prophetic

  829. book in the

  830. Old Testament.

  831. Most other

  832. books focus on

  833. the message of

  834. the prophet.

  835. They're basically

  836. full of speeches

  837. that God has

  838. commissioned

  839. prophets to go

  840. and communicate

  841. to people, to

  842. call them to

  843. repent and

  844. turn to God.

  845. But Jonah

  846. isn't really

  847. about his

  848. message, but

  849. it's about his

  850. journey.

  851. Jonah's actual

  852. message is in

  853. chapter 3, verse 4,

  854. where it says

  855. this, 40

  856. more days and

  857. Nineveh will

  858. be overthrown.

  859. The shortest

  860. sermon you've

  861. ever heard in

  862. your life.

  863. A message that

  864. is actually only

  865. five words in

  866. the Hebrew

  867. language.

  868. See, Jonah's

  869. a bit like a

  870. Hollywood thriller

  871. movie.

  872. You know those

  873. movies, they're

  874. full of ups and

  875. downs, plot

  876. twists and turns.

  877. One minute you

  878. think the main

  879. character will do

  880. one thing, but

  881. then you're left

  882. absolutely confused

  883. as it twists and

  884. they do something

  885. completely different.

  886. That's Jonah.

  887. He is a classic

  888. example of Hebrew

  889. literature, which

  890. Archie will touch

  891. on next week.

  892. There are intricate

  893. structure, parallels,

  894. humour, irony, all

  895. put together in a

  896. masterpiece to help

  897. us see the truth

  898. that the Lord

  899. saves.

  900. But why did

  901. Israel get this

  902. book?

  903. Well, my personal

  904. opinion is that

  905. Jonah wrote this

  906. after the events

  907. took place because

  908. he got home to

  909. the nation of

  910. Israel and he

  911. saw the danger

  912. of their view of

  913. God.

  914. He saw how their

  915. understanding of

  916. God's love and

  917. mercy was restricted

  918. to them as a

  919. people.

  920. And so in

  921. humility, Jonah

  922. penned this book

  923. using himself as

  924. an example of

  925. that change that

  926. needed to happen

  927. in the hearts of

  928. Israel.

  929. See, it's as if

  930. Jonah got back to

  931. the land of

  932. Israel after all

  933. of this had

  934. happened, saw

  935. those attitudes

  936. that he saw in

  937. himself and he

  938. says, everyone

  939. come in, story

  940. time.

  941. Let me tell you

  942. about a time in

  943. my life that you

  944. need to hear as

  945. well.

  946. See, this book

  947. focuses on God's

  948. control over all

  949. creation, people and

  950. planet alike and it

  951. is God's decision

  952. salvation who he

  953. showers his love

  954. and mercy on because

  955. it is the Lord who

  956. saves.

  957. That's what this

  958. book will teach us.

  959. But the third and

  960. final thing I want us

  961. to think about this

  962. evening is Jonah's

  963. challenge.

  964. And by that I mean

  965. what this book means

  966. for us today.

  967. So it presents us

  968. with that wonderful

  969. truth that the Lord

  970. saves.

  971. And the impact of

  972. that message has

  973. consequences on how

  974. we view ourselves

  975. as Christians and

  976. how we view and

  977. act towards non

  978. Christians around

  979. us.

  980. See, as Christians

  981. we understand the

  982. gospel.

  983. We know the

  984. life-saving message

  985. of Jesus' death and

  986. resurrection which is

  987. wonderful but it

  988. can also produce

  989. pride in us.

  990. See, it can lead to

  991. what I call Christian

  992. snobbery.

  993. The idea that

  994. because of our faith

  995. we're somehow

  996. better than everyone

  997. else out there

  998. can lead to

  999. Christians looking

  1000. down on others

  1001. instead of showing

  1002. them love and

  1003. being witnesses to

  1004. them like we were

  1005. called to do.

  1006. This book also

  1007. views, so challenges

  1008. the way we view

  1009. other people.

  1010. Now Jonah did

  1011. express a sense of

  1012. toxic nationalism and

  1013. racism towards the

  1014. Ninevites.

  1015. As an outsider

  1016. looking in on the

  1017. city of Nineveh,

  1018. Jonah saw a

  1019. ruthless people,

  1020. brutal in their

  1021. attacks and who

  1022. would stop at

  1023. nothing to expand

  1024. their borders.

  1025. Historical paintings

  1026. and artifacts

  1027. highlight the

  1028. brutality of this

  1029. kingdom that was,

  1030. would become the

  1031. biggest power at

  1032. the time.

  1033. and who would

  1034. eventually attack

  1035. and conquer the

  1036. northern kingdom

  1037. of Israel.

  1038. See, it's as if

  1039. when Jonah heard

  1040. God tell him,

  1041. go and preach to

  1042. Nineveh, he said,

  1043. the Ninevites?

  1044. Why would I

  1045. preach to the

  1046. Ninevites?

  1047. They don't deserve

  1048. a relationship with

  1049. God.

  1050. They only deserve

  1051. punishment for their

  1052. sins and their

  1053. stupidity.

  1054. they don't deserve

  1055. forgiveness.

  1056. Now, maybe we

  1057. don't use those

  1058. words, but that

  1059. sentiment is alive

  1060. today.

  1061. Because like Jonah,

  1062. in our time of

  1063. peace and plenty,

  1064. we have forgotten

  1065. the urgency and

  1066. the necessity to

  1067. share the good

  1068. news of Jesus

  1069. Christ with all

  1070. people as we've

  1071. been thinking in

  1072. the book of Acts

  1073. in the morning

  1074. service.

  1075. See, we're

  1076. tempted to look

  1077. at others and

  1078. their conduct and

  1079. think that we are

  1080. superior to them

  1081. and they don't

  1082. deserve the gospel.

  1083. We might see a

  1084. non-Christian living

  1085. out a party

  1086. lifestyle and

  1087. feeling the

  1088. effects of that

  1089. on their body,

  1090. on their mental

  1091. health, on their

  1092. finances, and we

  1093. might think they're

  1094. being stupid.

  1095. What we should

  1096. actually be doing

  1097. is coming alongside

  1098. that person because

  1099. they're hurting.

  1100. standing on the

  1101. sidelines in

  1102. judgment whilst

  1103. people are hurting

  1104. is never something

  1105. we should do.

  1106. And it is not

  1107. something the Bible

  1108. tells us to do

  1109. either.

  1110. The problem was

  1111. that Jonah looked

  1112. at other people and

  1113. all he saw was

  1114. enemies instead of

  1115. viewing them as

  1116. people in need of

  1117. God's salvation.

  1118. See, Jonah looked

  1119. at Nineveh and saw

  1120. people deserving of

  1121. judgment.

  1122. Jesus looked at

  1123. people and saw

  1124. he saw all the

  1125. chaotic worlds that

  1126. we live in.

1127. He saw the mess of

  1128. their lives.

  1129. He saw rebellion and

  1130. sin.

1131. And what did he say?

  1132. Matthew 9 verse 36

    Matthew 9:36

  1133. says, when he,

  1134. Jesus, saw the

  1135. crowds, he had

  1136. compassion on them

  1137. because they were

  1138. harassed and helpless

  1139. like sheep without a

  1140. shepherd.

1141. So as you look out of

  1142. the people on this

  1143. world, they are not

  1144. enemies.

  1145. They are human beings

1146. made in the image of

1147. God who need to be

  1148. told the life-changing

  1149. message of Jesus.

  1150. And we need to

1151. remember that it is the

  1152. Lord who saves.

  1153. No amount of

  1154. religiosity, no amount

  1155. of moral living will

  1156. ever be enough.

  1157. Nobody is saved

  1158. outside the saving

  1159. work of God through

  1160. his son, Jesus Christ.

  1161. And the turning

  1162. point to an extent

  1163. for Jonah was when

1164. he was in the belly

  1165. of the fish.

  1166. God worked out his

  1167. sovereign plan by

  1168. sending his man into

  1169. the depths for three

  1170. days and three nights.

  1171. How does that change

  1172. come about in our

  1173. hearts?

  1174. Well, through the

  1175. greater servant, the

  1176. ultimate servant of

  1177. God, Jesus, the

  1178. suffering servant who

  1179. was nailed to a

  1180. cross, murdered the

  1181. though innocent,

  1182. placed in a borrowed

  1183. tomb for three days

  1184. and yet who rose

  1185. victorious, defeating

  1186. sin, defeating death

  1187. and bringing forgiveness

  1188. to all who would

  1189. call on his name.

  1190. That is the change

1191. of heart that we need

1192. in order to view this

  1193. world not as enemies

  1194. but to have compassion

  1195. on them because they

  1196. are harassed and

  1197. helpless like sheep

  1198. without a shepherd.

  1199. God's love for you.

  1200. God's love for you.

  1201. God's love for you.

  1202. This book, Jonah,

  1203. challenges us and

  1204. challenges our view of

  1205. God, our view of

1206. others and our view of

  1207. ourselves.

  1208. The message that it

  1209. leaves ringing in our

  1210. ears is the Lord

  1211. saves.

  1212. The book of Jonah

  1213. ends with a question

  1214. and is deliberately

  1215. being written like that

1216. so that the reader can

  1217. ask themselves that same

  1218. question.

1219. At the end of Jonah

  1220. in chapter 4, God

  1221. simply asks Jonah and

  1222. I'm paraphrasing but he

  1223. basically says, and we

  1224. need this question today

  1225. too, isn't it right,

1226. God says, for me to

1227. show love and mercy to

  1228. all people, not only

  1229. those that you think

  1230. deserve it?

1231. So you think back to

  1232. that movie recommendation

  1233. from a friend.

1234. That turns out to be

  1235. much more complex than

1236. they said it would be.

  1237. Jonah is like that.

1238. On the surface, it is

  1239. simple but it presents

1240. us with a lot of hard

  1241. questions.

1242. The book of Jonah isn't

  1243. a kid's story that we

  1244. can easily skip over

  1245. because it's short and

1246. simple but it is part of

1247. God's word and it will

  1248. challenge our minds, it

  1249. will stretch our

  1250. imagination of who God

  1251. is and how he

  1252. approaches people and it

1253. will encourage us to see

  1254. that his limitless love

  1255. and mercy extends way

  1256. beyond we can even

  1257. imagine to people who

  1258. are harassed like sheep

  1259. without a shepherd.

  1260. Let's pray together.

1261. Heavenly Father, we thank you

  1262. for your word.

1263. We thank you for the

  1264. wonderful news that you

1265. alone are the one who

  1266. saves.

1267. Father, forgive us for the

1268. times where we have looked

1269. down on others, where we

1270. have thought that we are

  1271. superior because of our

  1272. faith in you.

  1273. Lord, help us remember

1274. that we are solely saved

1275. by your grace and that

  1276. nobody is deserving of

  1277. salvation.

1278. But also, Lord, we ask

1279. that you would be with

  1280. those who maybe think

  1281. that they are beyond

  1282. salvation, that they've

1283. done too much, that they've

  1284. gone too far.

1285. As we journey through the

1286. book of Jonah, would the

1287. truth ring in their minds

1288. that there is no one who

  1289. can out-sin God's grace?

1290. Father, would you lift our

  1291. eyes to Jesus?

1292. And would we be better

1293. disciples of him as we

1294. wrestle with the book of

  1295. Jonah?

1296. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1297. Amen.
