  1. Good morning everyone, have Acts 17 open in front of you, this is where we're going to be today.

  2. And here's what I want to do as I start, I want to tell you about my good friend called Gordon.

  3. Gordon is a pastor in another part of the city.

  4. Gordon and his family just live around the corner from us in Libertin.

  5. Gordon's a really good friend and here's why I love Gordon, I love his passion for Jesus.

  6. And here's what he started doing on Tuesday afternoons over the last couple of months.

  7. He gets on a bus at Libertin, jumps on it, he pays the fare and he makes his way all the way down to Edinburgh University campus.

  8. And here's what he's doing, he's talking to people.

  9. So no agenda really, he's just talking to people.

  10. He's lovingly interested in what is going on in people's lives.

  11. So he asks them, tell me about some of the biggest problems that you're facing in your life right now.

  12. What are they?

  13. Tell me about some of your biggest fears.

  14. It's amazing, he was telling me the other day what's coming back.

  15. I'm sure it won't surprise you.

  16. Mental health concerns, the pain of loneliness, the worries about the cost of living.

  17. Am I going to be able to finish this degree?

  18. What comes after it?

  19. But here's what he does.

  20. He concludes every single conversation with this question.

  21. He says, would you consider yourself a religious or a spiritual person?

  22. So he's telling me the other day, he's spoken to 25 students over the last couple of months.

  23. Which I think is pretty good going actually, 25 students.

  24. Question for you, how many of them do you think identified as Christian?

  25. None of them.

  26. None of them.

  27. I wonder how that strikes you this morning.

  28. Maybe it's something you identify with.

  29. Maybe you're here and you would say, that's exactly where I'm at.

  30. I just want you to know you're so welcome here.

  31. I love that you're here.

  32. Or maybe you listen to it and it causes you to despair.

  33. Here's my reaction to it.

  34. I heard Gordon say it and immediately I'm asking the question in my mind.

  35. I wonder if it's the one that hit you.

  36. That when it comes to reaching people in our city, for whom Jesus just isn't even on the radar.

  37. Can Christianity cut it?

  38. In the book of Acts, last week, do you remember where we were?

  39. Here, flick back to the first half of 17.

  40. We can kind of get our heads around the fact that the gospel, the message of Jesus,

  41. made a big splash in a place like Thessalonica.

  42. I can kind of get your head around that one, okay?

  43. Because verse 2 of chapter 17, come with me.

  44. What do these people know?

  45. What do these people have?

  46. What do these people know inside out?

  47. What do these people devote themselves to?

  48. Do you see the words?

  49. Scriptures.

  50. The Scriptures.

  51. This is what the people in Thessalonica have.

  52. So if you like, the religious kindling was already there for Paul to kind of use it and

  53. place it and pray that the Holy Spirit would take it and get the Jesus fire started, yeah?

  54. But Athens, this is a different ballgame completely.

  55. This is the intellectual capital of the world we're talking about here.

  56. This is the place where culture is shaped, just to throw some names at you.

  57. This is Plato.

  58. This is Aristotle.

  59. This is Socrates.

  60. All these years later, we've even heard of these guys.

  61. This is Athens.

  62. This is where the leading thinkers of the day all come together to do their thing.

  63. And I think somebody rightly compared the Athens then, everything that it represented,

  64. to the Oxford and Cambridge of today.

  65. I think that's a pretty good comparison if you're trying to get your head around it.

  66. So can Christianity cut it in a place like Athens?

  67. The message of Jesus, the gospel, will it run out of gas?

  68. Has the gospel made its match?

  69. Here's why whoever you are here today, whatever you think about this God,

  70. whatever that survey would find you, I want you to listen to what this passage is telling you.

  71. It's telling you that nothing is going to stop the Spirit of God doing the work of God

  72. as he takes the Word of God, where we read about the Son of God,

  73. and he applies it to the hearts of people all over the world despite their background.

  74. This should give us confidence, I take it today, that the gospel works.

  75. And it's because of who this God is,

  76. and it's because of who you and I are as human beings.

  77. Here's what I loved being reminded of this week.

  78. Ready for this?

  79. One truth to carry with us through this.

  80. Everyone's a worshiper.

  81. Everyone's a worshiper.

  82. Everyone's worshipping something.

  83. What was that Bob Dylan song?

  84. We have a certain era.

  85. You've got to serve somebody.

  86. Right?

  87. Maybe the Lord, maybe the devil, but you've got to serve somebody.

  88. Everyone's worshipping something.

  89. So there's that inbuilt desire,

  90. one that's hardwired into the DNA of every single human being

  91. that longs to find something to live for.

  92. You see, in Athens, hardly anybody's heard of Jesus,

  93. and yet the local comics in the day used to joke about the fact that it was a city

  94. where it was more likely that you were going to bump into a god than you were to a man.

  95. These gods, or as the passage says, to get into it, it says idols.

  96. Now, what's an idol?

  97. Try not to think miniature Buddha.

  98. Get it way bigger.

  99. Way bigger.

  100. What's an idol?

  101. It's something that I'm ploughing myself into

  102. because I'm convinced that that is the thing

  103. that will in turn provide me

  104. with satisfaction and meaning and pleasure in my life.

  105. It's an idol.

  106. It's an idol.

  107. You've got to see before it's a physical thing.

  108. It's a heart thing.

  109. There was a female American tennis player years ago called Chris Avert.

  110. She was one of the greatest singles players the women's game has ever seen.

  111. She gave a fascinating interview towards the end of her career.

  112. A journalist asks her,

  113. how are you feeling about retirement?

  114. And she said she was petrified.

  115. Why?

  116. And this was her line.

  117. Because tennis makes me feel like I'm somebody.

  118. Isn't it fascinating?

  119. Tennis makes me feel like I'm somebody.

  120. You take the word tennis out,

  121. insert in it whatever you will.

  122. Is that not what we're all longing for?

  123. Is that not the thing we're all searching for,

  124. that we're pursuing?

  125. Is it not why people in our city

  126. are throwing money at cars?

  127. Is it not why people in our city

  128. are queuing outside the Apple store

  129. to get the latest iPhone?

  130. If you get caught up in that trap,

  131. when it comes out,

  132. got an iPhone myself,

  133. nothing wrong with an iPhone.

  134. Is it not why people plow themselves

  135. into showing themselves in the best light

  136. on social media?

  137. Is it not why the house market

  138. in our city right now is bonkers?

  139. Because people are throwing money at things,

  140. thinking if only I get that,

  141. then that will provide me with the lifestyle

  142. that I want to get the things

  143. that I need in my life.

  144. Is it not why the magazines at WH Smiths

  145. are full of celebrity magazines?

  146. Because we want to know

  147. what that life is like.

  148. Is it not why the magazines

  149. are also full of self-help and image?

  150. Is it not why we still talk about

  151. this thing called midlife crisis?

  152. Because people hit post 45,

  153. having run hard at life for a season,

  154. and get to a point,

  155. they think to themselves,

  156. when the monotony of it kicks in,

  157. that they stop and say,

  158. what on earth is my life all about?

  159. Edinburgh's full of idols.

  160. Our hearts are full of idols.

  161. Everyone's a worshipper.

  162. The question is not if we're worshipping.

  163. The question is what we're worshipping.

  164. I love C.S. Lewis.

  165. This is the most over-quoted thing

  166. I've ever heard,

  167. but I tell you it

  168. because I think he gets it

  169. bang on the money.

  170. Here's what he says about human beings.

  171. And I love C.S. Lewis

  172. because he just makes observations

  173. about human beings

  174. that we know are true.

  175. He said this,

  176. we are half-hearted creatures,

  177. fooling about with drink and sex

  178. and ambition when infinite joy

  179. is offered us.

  180. Like an ignorant child

  181. who wants to go on

  182. making mud pies in the slum

  183. because he cannot imagine

  184. what is meant by the offer

  185. of a holiday at the sea,

  186. we are far too easily pleased.

  187. What he's saying is that

  188. we were made in the image of God.

  189. We were made to know him.

  190. We were made to enjoy him forever.

  191. But what's happened is

  192. the sin in each of our hearts

  193. has bent us in on ourselves

  194. so that we take the good things

  195. that God gives us

  196. and we make them God things.

  197. The tragedy of humanity

  198. is that we prefer to worship

  199. the created

  200. rather than the creator.

  201. And that's idolatry.

  202. Athens is a city full of gods

  203. because its people's hearts

  204. are full of idols.

  205. And so here goes Paul

  206. into this city

  207. with the message of Jesus.

  208. Really quickly Paul,

  209. Luke tells us

  210. four things happen to Paul

  211. when he hits Athens.

  212. We'll run through these

  213. really quickly, okay?

  214. Here's number one.

  215. His heart breaks.

  216. Verse 16.

  217. He's waiting for Silas and Timothy

  218. to come from Thessalonica.

  219. You see?

  220. And he goes sightseeing.

  221. So verse 16.

  222. Luke wants us to know

  223. what's going on in Paul's heart.

  224. Are you going to come with me

  225. and see the words here?

  226. He wasn't impressed.

  227. Do you see the words?

  228. He was distressed.

  229. Because the praise

  230. that God alone deserves,

  231. the people of Athens

  232. are taking it

  233. and they're giving it

  234. to something else.

  235. The word distressed,

  236. it's almost like,

  237. it's like a jealous yearning for.

  238. Remember,

  239. Paul's grown up steeped

  240. in the scriptures.

  241. God has consistently said

  242. all the way through

  243. the Old Testament,

  244. I will not give my glory

  245. to another.

  246. You will have no other God

  247. before me.

  248. I will be number one

  249. in your life.

  250. Long to be number one

  251. in your life.

  252. And you can imagine Paul

  253. then he's with each

  254. passing idol

  255. saying to himself,

  256. God alone should get

  257. that praise.

  258. the God alone

  259. who has made you

  260. so that you would

  261. give him that praise

  262. and you would enjoy

  263. him forever.

  264. You see the idolatry

  265. that's going on in Athens,

  266. it breaks Paul's heart.

  267. And you've got to understand

  268. it brings God's judgment.

  269. And so the question

  270. I think we've got to ask ourselves

  271. as we respond to this

  272. is do our hearts

  273. feel the same?

  274. Do our hearts long

  275. that the people of our world

  276. lovingly

  277. would take their eyes

  278. off their idols

  279. and give praise to God

  280. alone that he deserves?

  281. You've got to say

  282. who's Paul emulating here?

  283. Where's he got this from?

  284. He's got it from

  285. the Lord Jesus.

  286. You know, I love it

  287. when reading the Sporn

  288. in Mark chapter 10

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  289. where the rich young ruler

  290. comes to Jesus.

  291. What must I do?

  292. He says,

  293. I've kept the commands

  294. and Jesus says,

  295. sell all that you have

  296. and give it to the poor

  297. and the young man

  298. walks away empty.

  299. Why?

  300. Because he had tons of stuff.

  301. And I love it there.

  302. Why did Jesus speak to him?

  303. Why did Jesus tease out

  304. the idol in his life?

  305. Because he loved them.

  306. I love it.

  307. And then the same Jesus

  308. would sit on the cusp

  309. of the city

  310. and would say,

  311. Jerusalem, Jerusalem,

  312. how often I would have

  313. gathered you like a hen

  314. gathers her chicks

  315. but you would not come.

  316. His heart breaks

  317. for the idolatry

  318. in people's hearts.

  319. And that's why he goes

  320. to the cross.

  321. This is the gospel.

  322. Jesus, the perfect worshiper,

  323. goes to the cross

  324. to die the death

  325. and to take the punishment

  326. that idolaters

  327. like you and me deserve.

  328. He takes our hell.

  329. He dies

  330. and he takes it

  331. on himself

  332. by grace alone.

  333. His heart breaks

  334. and I take it

  335. that's what's going on

  336. here with Paul.

  337. His heart breaks.

  338. His heart is distressed

  339. for what's going on

  340. in people's lives.

  341. His heart breaks

  342. and his eyes look.

  343. Number two,

  344. where does he go?

  345. Verse 17.

  346. He goes to the synagogue

  347. and he goes

  348. to the marketplace.

  349. You see?

  350. So what's he going

  351. in search of?

  352. He's going in search

  353. of people.

  354. Verse 17.

  355. He reasoned.

  356. He spoke.

  357. Presumably he listened.

  358. What's he doing?

  359. I think he's just

  360. listening for clues

  361. as to what makes people think.

  362. What are they doing?

  363. What do they value?

  364. Where are they?

  365. Where are they?

  366. What are they believing?

  367. How are they living?

  368. He's spending time

  369. with people

  370. so much so

  371. that he can

  372. get up in front

  373. of the Areopagus

  374. which I guess

  375. in this day

  376. is like a mashup

  377. between a debating chamber,

  378. a high court,

  379. and a university

  380. teaching department.

  381. And he can say

  382. verse 22, 23.

  383. People of Athens,

  384. I see

  385. that in every way

  386. you are very religious.

  387. For as I walked around

  388. and looked carefully

  389. at your objects

  390. of worship.

  391. Do you see what he's doing?

  392. He's saying

  393. I walked around,

  394. I listened,

  395. I looked.

  396. He talked,

  397. he observed,

  398. he engaged.

  399. Do you know what I love?

  400. I love how ordinary

  401. that is.

  402. It's not like

  403. he's enrolled

  404. in night classes

  405. at the Athenian college.

  406. Would you teach me

  407. how the locals think?

  408. He's not got one

  409. of those tapes

  410. listening to how

  411. the locals speak,

  412. has he?

  413. He doesn't bring

  414. his PhD game

  415. to the floor.

  416. He just spent time

  417. with people.

  418. You know,

  419. comedians today

  420. they always talk

  421. about observational comedy.

  422. I take it

  423. this passage

  424. challenges us

  425. and calls us

  426. to be observational evangelists.

  427. You know,

  428. I was spending time

  429. with people.

  430. I was spending time

  431. lovingly listening

  432. to where people are at,

  433. what's going on.

  434. You know,

  435. I've got a friend

  436. called Pete

  437. who lives in Glasgow.

  438. He's a fellow pastor

  439. and also a parent.

  440. He was telling me

  441. the other day

  442. what he does

  443. to help him

  444. get good at this

  445. is he just blocks out

  446. in his calendar

  447. 8.30 to 9.30

  448. every Monday to Friday

  449. blocks it out.

  450. Do you know why?

  451. School run time.

  452. He says,

  453. I make time,

  454. we get there early

  455. so we can spend time

  456. with the parents.

  457. I want to know them.

  458. I want to listen

  459. and when I've dropped

  460. the kids off

  461. I give myself

  462. a good half an hour

  463. just to be available

  464. for people

  465. if they want to talk.

  466. Are you walking

  467. that route?

  468. I'll come that route

  469. with you.

  470. Just speaks to them.

  471. Take it,

  472. that's the heart

  473. behind

  474. our evangelism cards.

  475. Just writing names

  476. down of people.

  477. Who can we

  478. care and serve

  479. this week?

  480. Who can we invite

  481. to come and see?

  482. Who can we

  483. go and get to know

  484. and go and tell?

  485. This is about people.

  486. Long to hear

  487. people,

  488. what makes them tick.

  489. Do you know

  490. a wonderful way

  491. of doing it

  492. is you're going

  493. to work tomorrow

  494. listing what

  495. makes people tick?

  496. What did you do

  497. at the weekend?

  498. Wonderful opportunity.

  499. I always find it

  500. on a Friday

  501. what do people ask you?

  502. What are you doing

  503. at the weekend?

  504. On Monday

  505. what do they ask you?

  506. What did you do

  507. at the weekend?

  508. Two wonderful

  509. opportunities.

  510. You miss the boat

  511. on a Friday

  512. get in on a Monday.

  513. Telling people

  514. what you did.

  515. Listening to people

  516. what they did.

  517. What's going on

  518. in their lives.

  519. But do you see

  520. how Paul looks?

  521. He looks.

  522. And number three

  523. his mind thinks.

  524. How can I connect

  525. these people

  526. with the Bible story?

  527. He's got a grasp

  528. of a biblical

  529. world view.

  530. You know I love

  531. how he convinced

  532. this morning

  533. that the world

  534. the Bible describes

  535. as the world

  536. that you're living in.

  537. Are you convinced

  538. that the biblical

  539. world view

  540. is the best?

  541. It makes sense

  542. of life.

  543. That God

  544. by his grace

  545. has opened our eyes

  546. to see it.

  547. I was thinking

  548. this week

  549. but for the grace

  550. of God

  551. what are the things

  552. that I would be

  553. pursuing in my life?

  554. By his grace

  555. he's opened my eyes

  556. to see that this

  557. Bible story

  558. this world

  559. that I'm living in

  560. he helps me

  561. understand it.

  562. The world

  563. that the Bible

  564. describes

  565. I'm convinced

  566. that it

  567. makes sense

  568. of the world

  569. in which you

  570. and I live

  571. every day.

  572. And so what he does

  573. is he takes Athens

  574. and he tries to

  575. connect them

  576. into the biblical

  577. world view.

  578. Do you see

  579. it's in

  580. verse 23

  581. he spots

  582. an idol

  583. with a line

  584. on the front

  585. to an unknown

  586. God.

  587. This is what he

  588. quotes.

  589. I take it

  590. what's going on

  591. here

  592. the Athenians

  593. are just

  594. spreading their

  595. bets.

  596. They set up

  597. an idol

  598. to a random

  599. God

  600. just in case

  601. they've

  602. accidentally

  603. missed one

  604. out

  605. and they

  606. offend

  607. them.

  608. Your hearts

  609. are so full

  610. of idols

  611. says Paul

  612. that you

  613. worship a

  614. God

  615. you don't

  616. even know.

  617. And here's

  618. his end.

  619. How much

  620. more then

  621. should you

  622. worship the

  623. God of the

  624. Bible

  625. the creator

  626. of the

  627. world

  628. who has

  629. made himself

  630. known?

  631. And I

  632. take it

  633. this is the

  634. whole point

  635. of what

  636. Paul does

  637. here is

  638. he just

  639. talks about

  640. the God

  641. who has

  642. made himself

  643. known.

  644. And it's

  645. such an

  646. important point

  647. that we

  648. understand

  649. what he's

  650. doing.

  651. You know

  652. one of the

  653. toys that's

  654. been passed

  655. down through

  656. our children

  657. is Mr.

  658. Potato Head.

  659. Remember him?

  660. Mr.

  661. Potato Head

  662. a classic

  663. timeless toy.

  664. Why it's so

  665. much fun?

  666. It's Mrs.

  667. Potato Head

  668. as well

  669. isn't it

  670. now?

  671. You can

  672. make Mr.

  673. Potato Head

  674. look however

  675. you want him

  676. to look

  677. can't you?

  678. Take his

  679. nose out

  680. put it

  681. where his

  682. arms should

  683. be.

  684. Mustache

  685. on or

  686. off.

  687. Angry

  688. eyes or

  689. normal eyes.

  690. You can

  691. make Mr.

  692. Potato Head

  693. look however

  694. you want

  695. him to

  696. look.

  697. But you

  698. can't do

  699. that with

  700. God.

  701. It's like a

  702. WhatsApp chat

  703. isn't it?

  704. Where you

  705. can see but

  706. you cannot

  707. comment.

  708. You cannot

  709. make it

  710. fit to

  711. your own

  712. image.

  713. God has

  714. made himself

  715. known.

  716. Right?

  717. He's revealed

  718. himself in

  719. creation.

  720. He's revealed

  721. himself in

  722. his words.

  723. He's written

  724. because we're

  725. made in his

  726. image.

  727. Our

  728. consciences.

  729. What we

  730. understand to

  731. be right and

  732. wrong.

  733. Again it

  734. comes from

  735. the fact that

  736. God has

  737. made himself

  738. known and

  739. he's revealed

  740. himself supremely

  741. in the person

  742. of Jesus.

  743. If you hear

  744. today and you

  745. wonder what is

  746. this God?

  747. Who is this

  748. God?

  749. What is he

  750. like?

  751. You look at

  752. Jesus Christ.

  753. He's the

  754. image of the

  755. invisible God.

  756. What Paul

  757. does in

  758. verse 23 is

  759. he connects

  760. Athens to

  761. Genesis.

  762. You spend

  763. your time

  764. trying to

  765. make a

  766. home for

  767. your God

  768. so that

  769. they can

  770. live in

  771. your world.

  772. But let me

  773. tell you about

  774. the God of

  775. the Bible who

  776. made you and

  777. you're living in

  778. his world.

  779. You spend

  780. your time

  781. making your

  782. own gods,

  783. making gods

  784. in your

  785. image.

  786. But let me

  787. tell you about

  788. the God of

  789. the Bible who

  790. made you and

  791. made you in

  792. his image.

  793. That yes, I

  794. was reading a

  795. stat this week

  796. that if the

  797. chemical elements

  798. of your body

  799. were lumped

  800. together and

  801. sold you

  802. wouldn't have

  803. enough money

  804. to buy two

  805. flat whites.

  806. But make no

  807. mistake that

  808. you're matter

  809. that matters.

  810. Why?

  811. Because you're

  812. made wonderfully

  813. and beautifully

  814. in the image of

  815. God.

  816. And it's why

  817. it's so important

  818. isn't it when we

  819. look at stuff

  820. that's going on

  821. in America that

  822. will probably

  823. come here that

  824. we understand

  825. that from the

  826. moment of

  827. conception every

  828. life matters.

  829. Every life

  830. matters.

  831. And you can't

  832. help but not

  833. get involved in

  834. that.

  835. That every life

  836. whoever you are

  837. has value,

  838. has dignity,

  839. has worth.

  840. Not because you

  841. earned it.

  842. Because this God

  843. made you in his

  844. image.

  845. Paul is saying

  846. the very breath

  847. that you breathe,

  848. God who created

  849. all things,

  850. gave you that

  851. breath.

  852. The very food

  853. that you eat,

  854. God who makes

  855. all things and

  856. sustains all

  857. things,

  858. he's given you

  859. life.

  860. You see what

  861. he's saying?

  862. It's what

  863. scientists today,

  864. I take it they

  865. observe when they

  866. call what's going

  867. on in the world,

  868. they call it

  869. fine tuning.

  870. And as a result,

  871. because you're

  872. made in God's

  873. image, you're

  874. accountable to

  875. him.

  876. You see,

  877. he even quotes

  878. some of their

  879. own poets to

  880. help them see

  881. that deep down

  882. you all know

  883. this to be true.

  884. Something in you

  885. that clicks with

  886. what I'm saying.

  887. But you see

  888. what he's doing?

  889. He taps into

  890. what they are

  891. doing and he

  892. unearths their

  893. inconsistencies and

  894. he lovingly and

  895. logically connects

  896. them to the

  897. Bible story.

  898. So simple and

  899. yet so brave to

  900. do it.

  901. You know,

  902. comedian Frank

  903. Skinner, who

  904. from what I can

  905. tell has got some

  906. kind of belief in

  907. God.

  908. I love this story.

  909. He was debating

  910. with a friend of

  911. his who refused to

  912. believe that God

  913. created the world.

  914. So the two of them

  915. are going back,

  916. back and forth and

  917. his friend said,

  918. we're getting

  919. nowhere with this,

  920. listen, do you

  921. fancy a cuppa?

  922. So his friend goes

  923. away and puts the

  924. kettle on, turns

  925. around and gets

  926. back into the saddle

  927. of the conversation

  928. and they chat some

  929. more and all of a

  930. sudden they hear

  931. the kettle, it

  932. pings and his

  933. friend comes out

  934. with the line, I

  935. better go and see

  936. to that cup of

  937. tea because that

  938. cup of tea won't

  939. make itself, will

  940. it?

  941. To which Frank

  942. Skinner simply

  943. said, why not?

  944. You know, there's a

  945. simple logic to what

  946. Paul is doing here.

  947. He's taken something

  948. unknown, something

  949. people haven't quite

  950. thought about and

  951. he's just bringing

  952. out the simplicity

  953. of it.

  954. his mind thinks

  955. and then lastly,

  956. his number four,

  957. his mouth speaks.

  958. You see verse 18,

  959. Paul's taken to the

  960. Areopagus and you

  961. see how he's been

  962. taken there by the

  963. people who heard him

  964. speak in the

  965. marketplace.

  966. I was thinking

  967. about this week,

  968. this wasn't part of

  969. the script, this

  970. wasn't part of the

  971. plan, this wasn't

  972. the diary that Paul

  973. would end up getting

  974. this opportunity to

  975. speak and yet to

  976. see how God is

  977. sovereign over every

  978. single incident.

  979. Becky Manley

  980. Pippert in her

  981. wonderful book,

  982. Out of the Salt

  983. Shaker and Into

  984. the World, she

  985. calls these kind of

  986. things the divine

  987. appointments, love

  988. that, as if to say

  989. there is no such

  990. thing as chance.

  991. Every single person

  992. that we come across

  993. in our lives is

  994. somebody who God

  995. has ordained would

  996. be there and it

  997. changes how you

  998. think about your

  999. life, doesn't it,

  1000. what you do.

  1001. Paul preaches the

  1002. cross, I take it

  1003. Luke's focus here

  1004. is on the

  1005. resurrection because

  1006. that's the thing

  1007. that brought the

  1008. sneers, you see

  1009. verse 32, quite

  1010. literally they

  1011. burst out laughing,

  1012. that's what that

  1013. sneering word means,

  1014. they burst out

  1015. laughing.

  1016. Who is this

  1017. babbler?

  1018. The image there,

  1019. I think the word

  1020. is of a little

  1021. pigeon going around

  1022. just picking up

  1023. little seeds,

  1024. different seeds and

  1025. trying to cobble it

  1026. together in its

  1027. mouth, that's what

  1028. they're saying of

  1029. Paul, he's just

  1030. picking up threads

  1031. and nonsense and

  1032. trying to patch it

  1033. together and make

  1034. something.

  1035. The Greeks thought

  1036. that any notion of

  1037. an afterlife was

  1038. laughable, but what

  1039. does it prove?

  1040. It proves the

  1041. resurrection that

  1042. this Jesus, we

  1043. will all need to

  1044. give account to

  1045. him for how we've

  1046. lived before him

  1047. and God has raised

  1048. this Jesus and

  1049. seated him in the

  1050. place of all

  1051. authority and one

  1052. day he will return

1053. and I want you to

  1054. hear those words

  1055. and perfect justice

  1056. will be done when

  1057. this King Jesus

  1058. returns.

  1059. Perfect justice.

  1060. We've seen in the

  1061. world this week,

  1062. haven't we?

  1063. Soldiers being

  1064. caught and the

  1065. only reason they

  1066. were caught is

  1067. because we happen

1068. to see it on the

  1069. CCTV.

  1070. Makes you think,

  1071. doesn't it, what on

1072. earth is going on in

  1073. the world right now

1074. in that part of the

  1075. world that we will

  1076. never see and no

  1077. one will know about

  1078. except those who've

  1079. been murdered.

  1080. But this God sees,

  1081. he sees everything

  1082. and one day perfect

  1083. justice will be done

  1084. by King Jesus.

  1085. The fact that he

1086. has not come yet is

  1087. nothing to do with

  1088. his incompetence as

  1089. we thought about a

  1090. few weeks ago, it's

  1091. to do with his

  1092. mercy.

  1093. He longs for people

  1094. who are lost in

  1095. idolatry to come to

  1096. know him.

  1097. People sneer,

  1098. others mull, we

  1099. want to hear you

  1100. again in this, I

  1101. take it that's what

  1102. that means.

  1103. People think there

  1104. might be something

  1105. in this, can I

  1106. rethink it through?

1107. Let me just say we

  1108. flagged this book

  1109. last week and it

  1110. really hit with a

  1111. lot of people which

  1112. is wonderful and I

  1113. bought 25 copies

  1114. that are out the

  1115. front, just grab

  1116. your own, put a

  1117. little donation in

  1118. if you want, it's

  1119. just called Are

  1120. You 100% Sure You

  1121. Want to Be an

  1122. Agnostic?

  1123. And it's a

  1124. wonderful little

  1125. book that just

  1126. takes you through

  1127. some questions.

  1128. If you're in this

  1129. category of mulling,

  1130. we might want to

  1131. hear you again on

  1132. this, is there

  1133. something in this

  1134. Christianity business

  1135. will really help you

  1136. think through some

  1137. big questions you

  1138. might have.

  1139. But as we draw

  1140. this to a close,

  1141. do you see how

  1142. other people join?

  1143. verse 33, people

  1144. believed.

1145. Have a look at the

  1146. two people who Luke

  1147. specifically mentions at

  1148. verse 34.

  1149. And again, nothing is,

  1150. no name is wasted

  1151. here.

  1152. Don't just skip over

  1153. the names, think about

  1154. what's going on, right?

  1155. The two people,

  1156. Damaris.

  1157. So Luke's dignifying

  1158. her by mentioning her

  1159. name.

  1160. Again, what we saw

  1161. about the counter-cultural

  1162. nature of the gospel,

  1163. because Athens in

  1164. particular, a woman's

1165. role was to serve her

  1166. husband and her home,

  1167. whereas the man, I

  1168. take it, was expected

1169. the boys will be boys.

  1170. And Luke is saying,

  1171. Jesus rescued Damaris,

  1172. and I'm honouring her

  1173. by telling you about

  1174. her response of faith.

  1175. But talking to which,

  1176. who's the other guy?

  1177. Dionysus.

1178. This guy who was named

1179. after the Greek god of

  1180. wine and revelry.

  1181. And maybe he lived

1182. right up to that name,

  1183. we don't know.

1184. Maybe he was caught up

1185. in the worship of those

  1186. gods, thinking that

  1187. those things would

  1188. fulfil and satisfy him.

  1189. Because that's essentially

  1190. what an Epicurean is,

  1191. if you're wondering

  1192. about that.

  1193. What's life about?

  1194. It's about squeezing

1195. as much pleasure as you

  1196. can out of it.

  1197. Right?

1198. I take it as what

  1199. young people today

  1200. call YOLO, right?

  1201. You only live once.

  1202. I've got to squeeze

  1203. as much pleasure

1204. out of life as I can,

  1205. possibly, because time

  1206. is short.

  1207. God, I've heard that

  1208. one before, people

  1209. living for that.

1210. But his story, I take it

1211. as he comes to believe,

1212. is that of Psalm 4.

  1213. That God, you filled

  1214. my heart with greater

  1215. joy than when

  1216. their grain and

  1217. new wine abode.

  1218. There is a greater

  1219. pleasure in

  1220. Dionysus' life.

  1221. But more importantly,

  1222. do you see what

  1223. he's part of?

  1224. And Luke wants us

  1225. to see this.

1226. What is he part of?

  1227. He's part of the

  1228. Areopagus.

  1229. Can Christianity

  1230. cut it?

  1231. The Dionysus says,

  1232. yes it can.

  1233. I've heard no message

  1234. like the risen Jesus.

1235. You know, just as we

1236. close, let me take you

  1237. back to my mate

  1238. Gordon.

  1239. Remember him?

  1240. He's doing his thing

  1241. down Edinburgh

  1242. Uni campus on a

  1243. Tuesday afternoon.

  1244. Spoken to 25 people.

  1245. And he has spoken

  1246. to 25 people.

  1247. One said, no sorry,

  1248. none said they were

  1249. Christian.

  1250. Question, I've given

  1251. away the answer.

  1252. How many people do

  1253. you think said they

  1254. were atheist?

  1255. One.

1256. Now in my day when I

  1257. was at university,

  1258. that would have been

  1259. at least double digits

  1260. there.

  1261. But one person said

  1262. they were.

  1263. Which means that the

1264. other 24 he told me

  1265. said they were open,

  1266. curious or agnostic.

  1267. Is that not

  1268. interesting?

  1269. Is that not

  1270. interesting that all

  1271. these years later,

  1272. when you ask people

  1273. what their lives are

  1274. all about, what they

  1275. believe, what they're

  1276. doing, that people

  1277. still go, I don't

  1278. know.

  1279. I don't know.

  1280. Friends, what an

  1281. opportunity we have

  1282. right now to display

  1283. the countercultural

  1284. nature of who our

  1285. God is.

  1286. Because what does

  1287. Paul do?

1288. He says to people who

  1289. said that they worship

  1290. an unknown God.

  1291. He says, let me

  1292. declare to you the

  1293. God who's made

  1294. himself known.

  1295. Everyone's a

  1296. worshipper.

  1297. the question is,

  1298. what are you

  1299. worshipping?

  1300. Just close with

  1301. this lovely line

  1302. from Richard

  1303. Chevenot Trench.

  1304. An Anglican

  1305. Archbishop from

  1306. way back in the

  1307. day said this,

  1308. none but God

  1309. can satisfy the

  1310. longings of an

  1311. immortal soul

  1312. that as the heart

  1313. was made for him

  1314. so only he

  1315. can fill it.

  1316. So let us just

  1317. be quiet then,

  1318. just as we close

  1319. and sing our

  1320. song and then

  1321. we'll spend time

  1322. together.

  1323. I take it as God's

  1324. word has gone

  1325. forth.

  1326. His spirit will be

  1327. taking it and

  1328. moving amongst us.

  1329. So why don't we

  1330. just be quiet and

  1331. now is a wonderful

  1332. opportunity to think

  1333. about the things

  1334. we've been speaking

  1335. about this morning.

  1336. Where do you stand

  1337. before this God?

  1338. And then I'll pray.

  1339. And so Father,

  1340. I pray particularly

  1341. this morning for

  1342. those who would

  1343. not know you.

  1344. Oh Father,

  1345. I pray that by

  1346. your spirit as

  1347. your word goes

  1348. forth today that

  1349. you would make

  1350. yourself known.

  1351. That as the old

  1352. hymn says,

  1353. flowers unfold,

  1354. hearts unfold like

  1355. flowers before you

  1356. responding to the

  1357. sun of day.

  1358. Lord, would you

  1359. shine on hearts

  1360. today and open

  1361. blind eyes and

  1362. unblock deaf ears

  1363. to understand who

  1364. you are.

  1365. Just thank you for

  1366. your word,

  1367. Heavenly Father.

  1368. give us confidence

  1369. today that wherever

1370. we are in the world,

  1371. whoever we're

  1372. rubbing shoulders

  1373. with, that your

  1374. gospel is sufficient

  1375. and your word is

  1376. true.

  1377. And Father, I pray

  1378. that you would help

  1379. us to compassionately

  1380. love the people of

  1381. our city, in our

  1382. offices, in our

  1383. universities, in our

  1384. homes, in our

  1385. streets, in our

  1386. communities.

  1387. Father, would you

  1388. help us display the

  1389. compassion of Christ.

  1390. Christ.

  1391. So Father, I pray

  1392. that you would be

  1393. with us as we

  1394. finish this morning,

  1395. as we spend time

  1396. together.

  1397. Lord, would you

  1398. glorify yourself.

  1399. We pray these things

  1400. in Jesus' worthy

  1401. name.

  1402. Amen.
