  1. Thanks, Aaron and Danny and the band.

  2. Before we turn to God's word,

  3. please do have that passage open in front of you

  4. as we walk through it,

  5. but let us come to God in prayer.

  6. Let's pray together.

  7. Our Heavenly Father, we come before you this evening

  8. and we thank you for the joy it is

  9. to be able to open your word together.

  10. And Father, we pray that you would bless

  11. the words of my mouth

  12. and the meditations of all of our hearts

  13. and would it all be pleasing to you,

  14. our rock and our Redeemer.

  15. And it's in his name that we pray.

  16. Amen.

  17. Now, one of the things that you may

  18. or may not know about me

  19. is that I have a terrible memory

  20. and it is unbelievably annoying.

  21. So we all know that feeling, right?

  22. You remember something as you're sitting on the couch,

  23. probably on a Friday night.

  24. You're really comfy, but you've remembered

  25. and so you traipse upstairs to the room

  26. or to the office and you open the door

  27. and something magical happens

  28. in a negative sense of the word.

  29. You completely forget what you wanted to do.

  30. You forget why you entered into the room

  31. and you stand amazed that your brain

  32. has just simply stopped working.

  33. Or you leave the house with a shopping list

  34. of one thing, a pint of milk.

  35. You walk around the shop,

  36. you get distracted by everything else on the shelves,

  37. you pick up a few bargains here or there,

  38. you remember a few things.

  39. And then you get home to realize

  40. the one thing you went for

  41. is the thing you forgot to get.

  42. Now, I know that that isn't just me.

  43. People forget things all the time

  44. and we know it,

  45. which is why you get reminder letters

  46. from the dent or texts

  47. from dentists and doctors offices.

  48. It's why there are tons of different apps

  49. that ping you notifications on your phone

  50. to remind you of deals or upcoming events

  51. that may interest you.

  52. And it's why we have strings on our glasses

  53. because we know if we put them down,

  54. we will never find them again.

  55. We are a people who need to be reminded.

  56. And as we turn to 2 Peter 3 this evening,

  57. Peter gives us and his readers,

  58. original readers, a reminder.

  59. Peter says, remember that Jesus is coming back.

  60. So live holy and godly lives.

  61. Now, why did his first readers need this reminder?

  62. Well, because there were false teachers,

  63. as we've seen through this series,

  64. who were saying, forget about Jesus.

  65. He hasn't come back.

  66. He isn't coming back.

  67. So you can live as you please.

  68. And so out of love for his fellow Christians,

  69. Peter turns his attention

  70. to the return of Jesus,

  71. which he's already touched on before in the letter.

  72. Remember chapter 1, verses 16 to 18.

  73. Peter said that he was an eyewitness

  74. of the majesty of Jesus at the transfiguration,

  75. which points us to the future return

  76. and glory of Jesus.

  77. And in chapter 1, verses 19 to 20,

  78. Peter told us that scripture teaches us

  79. that Jesus will return.

  80. And in chapter 2, verses 1 to 10,

  81. he told us that there are real historical stories

  82. that tell us of a time where God will judge the wicked

  83. and save the righteous.

  84. These have all been building blocks,

  85. pointing us to this part of the letter

  86. where Peter speaks about the return of Jesus

  87. and why it is so important that we remember

  88. Jesus is coming back.

  89. So Peter says,

  90. remember that Jesus is coming back

  91. and so live holy and godly lives.

  92. That's the main message for tonight

  93. and that's the sentence that we'll use

  94. to think about these verses.

  95. So the first thing we see

  96. is Peter's call to remember

  97. in verses 1 to 7.

  98. Remember.

  99. Peter begins his reminder in verse 1.

  100. Read it with me.

  101. Dear friends,

  102. this is now my second letter to you.

  103. I have written both of them

  104. as reminders to stimulate you

  105. to wholesome thinking.

  106. Now the NIV says,

  107. Dear friends,

  108. but a better translation of that word

  109. is beloved.

  110. Like a close friend or family member,

  111. Peter calls his readers his loved ones,

  112. which reminds them of both his love for them,

  113. but also of God's love for them

  114. shown in Christ Jesus.

  115. And this is Peter's second letter to them.

  116. We talked about that

  117. in the first sermon in this series.

  118. The first letter was either 1 Peter

  119. or a lost letter that we no longer have.

  120. I think it's probably 1 Peter.

  121. And the good thing is

  122. that Peter doesn't leave us guessing

  123. why he has written to them.

  124. The end of verse 1.

  125. Both letters are reminders

  126. to stimulate the readers

  127. to wholesome thinking.

  128. So Peter wants his readers

  129. to think sincerely

  130. and properly

  131. about their faith

  132. and to not have any

  133. hidden motives or agendas

  134. like the false teachers did.

  135. Now how do we do this?

  136. Well, we remember.

  137. Peter says to remember

  138. two things in verse 2.

  139. Do you see them?

  140. The words spoken in the past

  141. by the holy prophets

  142. and the command given

  143. by our Lord and Saviour

  144. through your apostles.

  145. The words spoken

  146. by the holy prophets

  147. refers to the whole Old Testament

  148. which points forward

  149. to the coming of Jesus

  150. and the forgiveness

  151. and reconciliation with God

  152. that is only to be found

  153. through him.

  154. Peter says that these words

  155. continue to testify today.

  156. serving believers

  157. as they point us

  158. to the good news

  159. of Jesus Christ.

  160. And the command given

  161. by our Lord and Saviour

  162. through the apostles

  163. is most likely

  164. a reference to the gospel.

  165. Peter's reminding his readers

  166. of Jesus' command

  167. to repent

  168. and follow him.

  169. That same message

  170. was passed down

  171. from Jesus

  172. to the apostles

  173. and to all churches

  174. ever since

  175. through their testimony.

  176. And it spread

  177. as people became Christians.

  178. As fallible human beings

  179. we need reminders.

  180. Peter isn't telling

  181. these people

  182. anything new right now

  183. but he's saying

  184. remember what you have been taught.

  185. Remember

  186. what Jesus said.

  187. And then in verse 3

  188. we see why it's so important

  189. to have this reminder.

  190. Now there are

  191. degrees of importance

  192. in reminders

  193. aren't there?

  194. For example

  195. this past month

  196. I've had two reminders.

  197. One was to sign up

  198. to the gym

  199. and the other one

  200. was to be a witness

  201. in a court case.

  202. Both reminders

  203. but with varying degrees

  204. of importance.

  205. One is good

  206. for my health

  207. and my ever-expanding

  208. waist.

  209. but the other

  210. is important

  211. because

  212. only if I show up there

  213. will justice be served.

  214. Both reminders

  215. with very different degrees

  216. of importance.

  217. But I still needed

  218. reminding of both things.

  219. And so Peter helps

  220. his readers

  221. see why it's so important

  222. for them to remember

  223. the truth of the gospel

  224. and to remember

  225. that Jesus is coming back.

  226. Read verse 3 with me.

  227. Above all

  228. you must understand

  229. that in the last days

  230. scoffers will come.

  231. Scoffing and following

  232. their own evil desires.

  233. Now scoffers get a kick

  234. out of mocking people

  235. or ideas

  236. and the dangerous thing

  237. that these particular

  238. scoffers were doing

  239. is that they are

  240. toying with

  241. and mocking ideas

  242. and promises

  243. that Jesus Christ gave.

  244. And by doing so

  245. they are showing

  246. their arrogance

  247. and contempt

  248. for the truth.

  249. Peter says,

  250. remember these people

  251. will come

  252. in verse 3

  253. in the last days.

  254. Now the last days

  255. is a term

  256. that the Bible

  257. uses to describe

  258. the time between

  259. Jesus' birth

  260. or the New Testament

  261. uses to describe

  262. the time between

  263. Jesus' birth

  264. and his second coming.

  265. Which is a future date

  266. when Jesus will come

  267. and will judge

  268. the wicked

  269. and save those

  270. who believe in him

  271. as verse 13

  272. tells us.

  273. But following

  274. their evil desires

  275. as the end of verse

  276. 3 says,

  277. what will these

  278. scoffers say?

  279. In verse 4

  280. they will say,

  281. where is this coming

  282. he promised.

  283. Ever since

  284. our ancestors died

  285. everything goes on

  286. as it has

  287. since the beginning

  288. of creation.

  289. Do you see

  290. how flippantly

  291. these scoffers

  292. were responding

  293. to promises

  294. that Jesus said?

  295. They're basically

  296. calling Jesus

  297. a liar.

  298. Saying,

  299. well,

  300. if he said

  301. he would come

  302. where is he?

  303. Also saying

  304. that from the beginning

  305. of time

  306. things have just happened.

  307. God has had no hand

  308. in anything.

  309. He hasn't intervened

  310. at all in creation.

  311. And so Peter sets them

  312. right in verses

  313. 5 to 7

  314. because these scoffers

  315. are deliberately

  316. forgetting.

  317. They are deliberately

  318. intentionally

  319. ignoring the truth

  320. that verse 5

  321. God created

  322. the world

  323. by his word

  324. in Genesis 1 and 2.

  325. And they continue

  326. to ignore the truth

  327. that verse 6

  328. God also judged

  329. the world

  330. by water

  331. in the flood

  332. in Genesis 6 to 8.

  333. See,

  334. these scoffers

  335. are mocking

  336. these truths

  337. and deliberately

  338. ignoring

  339. the warnings

  340. that the Bible

  341. gives.

  342. Both in the Old Testament

  343. and in the teaching

  344. of Jesus

  345. that judgment

  346. will fall

  347. on all those

  348. who reject him.

  349. That's why Peter

  350. says in verse 7

  351. by the same word

  352. the present heavens

  353. and earth

  354. are reserved

  355. for fire

  356. being kept

  357. for the day

  358. of judgment

  359. and destruction

  360. of the ungodly.

  361. Do not be ignorant

  362. of this fact

  363. that scoffers

  364. will come.

  365. Do not be ignorant

  366. that people

  367. will mock the truth

  368. and stand up

  369. and say that judgment

  370. doesn't exist.

  371. And people

  372. will say

  373. that a loving

  374. God

  375. wouldn't judge

  376. people

  377. that hell

  378. is just

  379. a creation

  380. of the church.

  381. All of these

  382. things are lies

  383. that act like

  384. a comfort blanket

  385. to people

  386. whilst they walk

  387. on their path

  388. to hell

  389. and judgment.

  390. Deliberately

  391. forgetting

  392. truths

  393. that the Bible

  394. makes abundantly

  395. clear.

  396. Friends,

  397. if you're flirting

  398. with these ideas,

  399. if you're flirting

  400. with preachers

  401. and people

  402. who promote

  403. these ideas

  404. in any form

  405. whether that's

  406. sermons,

  407. books,

  408. blog posts,

  409. whatever,

  410. be careful.

  411. And remember

  412. the truth of Scripture.

  413. Remember the gospel

  414. of Jesus Christ

  415. and run a mile

  416. from all teaching

  417. that would seek

  418. to distract you

  419. from Him.

  420. As Christians

  421. we need to be able

  422. to discern

  423. the truth.

  424. We need

  425. to know the Bible

  426. because doing that

  427. we will remember

  428. what we need to.

  429. We need to get

  430. into our Bibles

  431. to know God's Word

  432. well and that way

  433. we can discern

  434. what is true

  435. and what is false.

  436. So Peter says

  437. remember.

  438. And the second thing

  439. we see Peter saying

  440. is that Jesus

  441. is coming back

  442. in verses 8 to 10.

  443. Jesus is

  444. coming back.

  445. See one of the things

  446. that these false

  447. teachers were using

  448. as their so-called

  449. evidence for Jesus

  450. not coming back

  451. is that it hadn't

  452. happened yet.

  453. But Peter was a witness

  454. of Jesus' promises.

  455. Peter saw the amazing

  456. miracles that Jesus

  457. did.

  458. He was a witness

  459. of all Jesus said

  460. and did

  461. through his time.

  462. and Peter

  463. saw some of the

  464. things Jesus said

  465. come true

  466. in his life.

  467. So Peter says

  468. in verse 8

  469. do not forget

  470. this one thing

  471. dear friends

  472. with the Lord

  473. a day is like

  474. a thousand years

  475. and a thousand years

  476. are like a day.

  477. The Lord is not

  478. slow in keeping

  479. his promise

  480. as some understand

  481. slowness.

  482. Instead

  483. he is

  484. patient with you.

  485. Not wanting

  486. anyone to perish

  487. but everyone to come

  488. to repentance.

  489. Peter says

  490. don't be like

  491. the false teachers

  492. and the scoffers

  493. who deliberately

  494. forget in verse 5

  495. but instead

  496. remember

  497. that God's timing

  498. is not our own.

  499. Timing has been

  500. a distraction

  501. for people

  502. for thousands

  503. of years.

  504. In every generation

  505. there is normally

  506. at least one person

  507. somewhere on the planet

  508. who

  509. says that they

  510. have a specific date

  511. that they know

  512. Jesus will come back on.

  513. The day comes

  514. the day goes

  515. and nothing happens.

  516. That doesn't mean

  517. we aren't waiting

  518. eagerly for that day.

  519. See realistically

  520. I think many of us

  521. would like Jesus

  522. to return now

  523. wouldn't we?

  524. We turn on our news

  525. and we see news

  526. we see reports

  527. of war in Ukraine

  528. not to mention

  529. the ongoing wars

  530. in Syria

  531. Yemen

  532. Mozambique

  533. war crimes

  534. hatred

  535. murder

  536. bombing

  537. school shootings

  538. we see all of these events

  539. and we think

  540. Jesus

  541. why have you not

  542. come back yet?

  543. And because of our

  544. natural

  545. good

  546. God-given

  547. desire for justice

  548. we want to see

  549. Jesus come

  550. as judge

  551. and because

  552. people are eager

  553. for Jesus'

  554. return

  555. when we read

  556. verses like

  557. verse 8

  558. that with the

  559. Lord a day

  560. is like a thousand

  561. years and a thousand

  562. years are like a day

  563. the temptation

  564. is to read that

  565. like a mathematical

  566. formula

  567. and to pin down

  568. a day when we

  569. think Jesus

  570. will return

  571. but that's not

  572. what Peter's saying

  573. remember he was

  574. there

  575. physically with

  576. Jesus in act

  577. 1

  578. where Jesus

  579. said about his

  580. second coming

  581. it is not for you

  582. to know the times

  583. or dates

  584. that the father

  585. has set by his

  586. own authority

  587. Peter is saying

  588. that God's

  589. relationship

  590. with time

  591. goes beyond

  592. what our finite

  593. minds can imagine

  594. because

  595. God has always

  596. existed

  597. as Psalm 90

    Psalms 90:4

  598. verse 4

  599. tells us

  600. which Peter's

  601. alluding to

  602. here

  603. see the reason

  604. Jesus hasn't

  605. returned yet

  606. is not because

  607. he's slow

  608. or reluctant

  609. it's not because

  610. he isn't planning

  611. on coming through

  612. on his promises

  613. but Jesus

  614. hasn't returned

  615. yet because

  616. God is merciful

  617. God's patience

  618. is evident

  619. in verse 9

  620. God is patient

  621. with you

  622. not wanting

  623. anyone to

  624. perish

  625. but everyone

  626. to come

  627. to repentance

  628. God's patience

  629. is a common

  630. theme throughout

  631. the Bible

  632. but God

  633. isn't just

  634. God isn't

  635. being patient

  636. because he

  637. doesn't want

  638. to come

  639. and judge

  640. God's

  641. patience

  642. is intended

  643. to lead

  644. people to

  645. repentance

  646. as Romans

    Romans 2:4

  647. chapter 2

  648. verse 4

  649. says

  650. because whilst

  651. God is

  652. merciful and

  653. wants people

  654. to be saved

  655. he is just

  656. and his

  657. sovereign

  658. he is sovereign

  659. over creation

  660. and judgment

  661. is coming

  662. verse 10

  663. but the day

  664. of the Lord

  665. will come

  666. like a thief

  667. the heavens

  668. will disappear

  669. with the roar

  670. the elements

  671. will be destroyed

  672. by fire

  673. and the earth

  674. and everything

  675. done in it

  676. will be laid

  677. bare

  678. the day

  679. of the Lord

  680. is a term

  681. used in the

  682. Bible

  683. to describe

  684. that final

  685. day of

  686. judgment

  687. that final

  688. day when

  689. all of

  690. humanity

  691. will stand

  692. before God

  693. and be

  694. judged

  695. and that day

  696. will come

  697. like a thief

  698. meaning that it

  699. will be sudden

  700. but it won't

  701. be a secret

  702. it cannot

  703. be missed

  704. and it

  705. cannot be

  706. avoided

  707. you don't

  708. get a save

  709. the date

  710. card through

  711. the post

  712. and you

  713. leave it

  714. sitting on

  715. the sides

  716. do you

  717. thinking

  718. or questioning

  719. whether the

  720. day is going

  721. to actually

  722. happen

  723. if you do

  724. that you'll

  725. probably miss

  726. a party

  727. or a wedding

  728. or some

  729. kind of

  730. special event

  731. no

  732. if you're

  733. told that

  734. something's

  735. coming up

  736. you prepare

  737. for it

  738. don't you

  739. you make

  740. sure you're

  741. free

  742. you look

  743. forward to

  744. you plan

  745. around it

  746. well whilst

  747. we do not

  748. know the

  749. date

  750. we can be

  751. certain

  752. that a

  753. day is

  754. coming

  755. where this

  756. world will

  757. be transformed

  758. and everything

  759. in it will

  760. be laid

  761. bare

  762. verse 10

  763. that means

  764. that all of

  765. humanity will

  766. stand before

  767. God and

  768. give an

  769. account of

  770. their actions

  771. in this

  772. life and

  773. how they

  774. responded to

  775. Jesus

  776. so this

  777. is your

  778. save the

  779. date card

  780. that day

  781. is coming

  782. are you

  783. ready for

  784. it

  785. the false

  786. teachers

  787. weren't

  788. they mocked

  789. God

  790. they distorted

  791. the truth

  792. they lived

  793. as they

  794. pleased

  795. deliberately

  796. ignoring the

  797. truth that

  798. Jesus was

  799. coming back

  800. friends please

  801. please do

  802. not be like

  803. them

  804. do not go

  805. through the

  806. motions but

  807. remember that

  808. Jesus is

  809. coming back

  810. and let that

  811. truth challenge

  812. your heart

  813. and how you

  814. respond to

  815. Jesus but

  816. also make it

  817. challenge your

  818. heart as you

  819. look out to a

  820. world that is

  821. dying without the

  822. saving knowledge

  823. of Jesus

  824. do you love

  825. this world

  826. as God

  827. does are you

  828. actively sharing

  829. the gospel or

  830. are we simply

  831. playing lip

  832. service to a

  833. belief system

  834. without actually

  835. caring about

  836. people's eternal

  837. state before

  838. God

  839. Jesus is

  840. coming back

  841. the day of

  842. the Lord

  843. the day of

  844. judgment is

  845. coming

  846. what are we

  847. doing about

  848. it

  849. and that's

  850. what Peter

  851. touches on in

  852. the last section

  853. of our passage

  854. tonight he

  855. says remember

  856. that Jesus is

  857. coming back

  858. and so live

  859. godly lives

  860. in verses

  861. 11 to 13

  862. live holy

  863. and godly

  864. lives

  865. Peter is

  866. saying to

  867. these Christians

  868. in light of

  869. the knowledge

  870. that one day

  871. Jesus will

  872. judge the

  873. world that

  874. all the actions

  875. of people will

  876. be laid bare

  877. then we are

  878. to live holy

  879. lives

  880. so the reality

  881. of the day of

  882. the Lord demands

  883. us to live a

  884. certain way

  885. not because a

  886. moral life makes

  887. us right with

  888. God but because

  889. our salvation

  890. through Jesus

  891. and his death

  892. and resurrection

  893. should result

  894. in us

  895. wanting to

  896. live the way

  897. God created

  898. us to live

  899. and so Peter's

  900. summary is

  901. live holy

  902. and godly

  903. lives

  904. we see the

  905. same Peter

  906. making the same

  907. call in 1

    1 Peter 1:15–16

  908. Peter 1

  909. verses 15

  910. to 16

  911. that Christians

  912. should live

  913. holy lives

  914. why

  915. because Christians

  916. are called to

  917. be holy

  918. because God

  919. is holy

  920. 1 Peter 1

  921. 15 to 16

  922. because God

  923. has made us

  924. into a holy

  925. priesthood

  926. 1 Peter 2

    1 Peter 2:5

  927. verse 5

  928. and a holy

  929. nation

  930. 1 Peter 2

    1 Peter 2:9

  931. verse 9

  932. therefore the

  933. life of every

  934. Christian

  935. the life of

  936. every church

  937. should be

  938. different

  939. set apart

  940. for God

  941. following his

  942. will

  943. following his

  944. word

  945. following his

  946. plans

  947. living this

  948. kind of life

  949. is necessary

  950. for every

  951. Christian

  952. but it is

  953. also the

  954. fruit of

  955. looking forward

  956. to the day

  957. of the

  958. Lord

  959. with eager

  960. anticipation

  961. so it is

  962. looking forward

  963. to the day

  964. of the Lord

  965. is waiting

  966. but it isn't

  967. passive

  968. now we're all

  969. used to waiting

  970. for things

  971. but it doesn't

  972. mean that we

  973. like it

  974. but we know

  975. what it means

  976. to wait

  977. maybe you're

  978. like me

  979. and you get

  980. impatient

  981. you're standing

  982. at the bus

  983. stop

  984. you've got

  985. the app

  986. open

  987. with the

  988. live updates

  989. on when

  990. the bus

  991. will arrive

  992. constantly

  993. checking the

  994. app

  995. refreshing

  996. constantly

  997. looking around

  998. the corner

  999. waiting

  1000. this happened

  1001. to Sabina

  1002. and I

  1003. this week

  1004. we were

  1005. standing

  1006. waiting

  1007. for the

  1008. bus

  1009. that just

  1010. decided

  1011. it wasn't

  1012. going to

  1013. show up

  1014. but we

  1015. kept

  1016. looking

  1017. waiting

  1018. doing a

  1019. little bit

  1020. of complaining

  1021. too

  1022. but apart

  1023. from that

  1024. we could do

  1025. nothing

  1026. else

  1027. all we

  1028. could do

  1029. was stand

  1030. there

  1031. we were

  1032. passive

  1033. in our

  1034. waiting

  1035. but Peter

  1036. says that

  1037. doesn't work

  1038. with the

  1039. Christian life

  1040. but it's a

  1041. whole life

  1042. orientation

  1043. Christians should

  1044. be living

  1045. for the

  1046. day of

  1047. the Lord

  1048. when judgment

  1049. will fall

  1050. as verse

  1051. 12

  1052. reminds us

  1053. but also

  1054. the day

  1055. as verse

  1056. 13 says

  1057. that in

  1058. keeping with

  1059. his promise

  1060. we are looking

  1061. forward to a

  1062. new heaven

  1063. and a new

  1064. earth

  1065. where

  1066. righteousness

  1067. dwells

  1068. see the

  1069. day of

  1070. the Lord

  1071. isn't only

  1072. about judgment

  1073. but it is

  1074. the day

  1075. where salvation

  1076. is complete

  1077. the day

  1078. where all

  1079. Christians

  1080. will be in

  1081. the new

  1082. heavens

  1083. and the

  1084. new earth

  1085. the place

  1086. where

  1087. righteousness

  1088. dwells

  1089. that righteousness

  1090. refers to

  1091. those who have

  1092. been made

  1093. righteous

  1094. who are

  1095. right with

  1096. God

  1097. through

  1098. Jesus

  1099. but the

  1100. new creation

  1101. will be a

  1102. place of

  1103. righteousness

  1104. the place

  1105. that righteousness

  1106. dwells because

  1107. ultimately

  1108. God is there

  1109. and he is the

  1110. very definition

  1111. of righteousness

  1112. so what would it

  1113. look like for us

  1114. to live holy

  1115. and godly

  1116. lives as we

  1117. eagerly look

  1118. forward to the

  1119. second coming

  1120. of Jesus

  1121. well it means

  1122. living a life of

  1123. holiness that the

  1124. Bible calls us to

  1125. it means standing

  1126. out for Jesus

  1127. it means relying

  1128. on him

1129. as we live in a

  1130. broken world

  1131. in our broken

  1132. bodies

  1133. it means living a

  1134. God orientated

  1135. life

  1136. living for his

  1137. glory

  1138. it means taking

  1139. our faith

  1140. seriously

  1141. investing time

  1142. to know the

  1143. truth

  1144. it means having

  1145. our whole life

  1146. shaped by our

  1147. new identity

  1148. in Jesus

  1149. it means gathering

  1150. with your brothers

  1151. and sisters in

  1152. Christ

  1153. encouraging them

  1154. building one

  1155. another up in

  1156. the faith

  1157. worshipping God

  1158. as a local

  1159. church and it

  1160. means taking

  1161. the good news

  1162. of Jesus to a

  1163. world because a

  1164. day is coming

  1165. where the

  1166. opportunity to

  1167. repent and

  1168. believe will

  1169. no longer be

  1170. there

  1171. so Peter says

  1172. to his readers

  1173. and to us this

  1174. evening remember

  1175. that Jesus is

  1176. coming back

  1177. so live holy

  1178. and godly

  1179. lives

  1180. we're a people

  1181. who constantly

  1182. need reminding

  1183. of things

  1184. that's why we

  1185. have shopping

  1186. lists

  1187. doctors and

  1188. dentists

  1189. appointment

  1190. reminder text

  1191. to-do lists

  1192. and so on

  1193. but the most

  1194. important thing

  1195. that we can

  1196. and should

  1197. remember in this

  1198. life

  1199. is that as

  1200. Christians we

  1201. are not our

  1202. own

  1203. we live for

  1204. God and we

  1205. should be

  1206. constantly reminding

  1207. one another of

  1208. the truth that

  1209. Jesus is coming

  1210. back and

  1211. discipling one

  1212. another living the

  1213. Christian life

  1214. together in

  1215. eager anticipation

  1216. of the day when

  1217. we will meet

  1218. Jesus face to

  1219. face

  1220. brothers and

  1221. sisters remember

  1222. that Jesus is

  1223. coming back

  1224. and live holy

  1225. and godly

  1226. lives

  1227. let us pray

  1228. together

  1229. heavenly father

  1230. we come before

  1231. you and we

  1232. ask for forgiveness

  1233. for the times

  1234. where we coast

  1235. through the

  1236. Christian life

  1237. where we don't

  1238. think about the

  1239. second coming of

  1240. Jesus and we

  1241. go about our

  1242. day to day as

  1243. if it will

  1244. never happen

  1245. but by your

  1246. spirit I pray

  1247. that you would

  1248. give us the

  1249. strength and

  1250. the ability to

  1251. fix our eyes on

  1252. Jesus

  1253. to eagerly await

  1254. the day when he

  1255. will come

  1256. and would that

  1257. day change the

  1258. way we live

  1259. would it give us

  1260. a burden for

  1261. those around us

  1262. to come to know

  1263. Jesus Christ as

  1264. their own Lord and

  1265. Savior would it

  1266. give us a burden

  1267. for our own lives

  1268. that we would live

  1269. in a way that

  1270. glorifies him

  1271. and father we pray

  1272. for that day

  1273. and we look

  1274. forward to the

  1275. day where there

  1276. will be no more

  1277. tears no more

  1278. pain no more

  1279. suffering and no

  1280. more death and

  1281. that you will dwell

  1282. with your people

  1283. that glorious day

  1284. when we will meet

  1285. you face to face

  1286. help us to

  1287. eagerly expect

  1288. that day in

  1289. Jesus name we

  1290. pray amen
