  1. Well folks, as we turn to that passage, please do have it open in front of you.

  2. We'll be dipping in and out of it, so it'll be great if you have it open in front of you in the pew Bibles,

  3. if that's convenient for you.

  4. Let us pray before we think about this passage together.

  5. Let's pray.

  6. Heavenly Father, when we come to a passage like this, we have questions.

  7. We have maybe doubts of what it could teach us.

  8. Father, I pray that you would help me to preach faithfully.

  9. Father, would you bless the meditations of our hearts and the words of my mouth.

  10. Would it all be pleasing to you, our wonderful rock and our redeemer.

  11. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  12. Now, have you ever read a story, watched a movie or seen an episode series

  13. and it doesn't quite pan out like you think it would.

  14. There's that moment where you're following along, everything is happy and fine,

  15. the story makes sense, but then something happens and it throws it.

  16. It throws you completely off.

  17. You're left shocked, unsure of what will happen next.

  18. You are confused and you have questions.

  19. That's similar to where I think we find Paul this morning.

  20. He's been one of the most well-known people in the New Testament who went from town to town,

  21. telling people about Jesus, planting churches, encouraging Christians.

  22. But then last week in Acts chapter 21, we saw that he was told he would be bound in Jerusalem

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  23. and handed over to the Gentiles.

  24. That is not what you would expect of this great apostle.

  25. What good can come from this, we might be asking.

  26. Now, maybe you found yourself in that situation as well.

  27. Questioning why God has placed you where you are.

  28. Why God has placed you around the people that you are around.

  29. It all seems hard and you have no idea what good could come from any of this.

  30. Well, two things we can learn from Paul this morning as he found himself in a similar situation.

  31. Always be ready to give a reason for your faith in Jesus

  32. and remember that God's ways are not your ways.

  33. Now, we'll cover that passage that Alistair read to us under two headings

  34. that summarise the teaching points of these verses.

  35. But also that help us think about how to apply this passage to our lives.

  36. Let me give you a quick overview of what happened in the passage.

  37. So a group of Jews were angry with Paul and they gather a mob.

  38. They create absolute chaos with false accusations and they try to kill him

  39. until the Roman authorities step in.

  40. Then Paul asks to speak to the crowd who just tried to kill him.

  41. And he tells the story of his own life and what God has done.

  42. He then stands before the religious high court and another chaotic scene breaks out.

  43. There's another plot to kill Paul, but it is all discovered by the Romans

  44. who, as we'll see next week, take steps to keep him safe.

  45. Now, what can we learn from this historical retelling of one man's story

  46. intertwined with courtrooms, with chaos and with religious customs?

  47. Well, we can learn that we always need to be ready to give a defence for our faith

  48. and that God's ways are not our ways.

  49. So let's look at this passage together with those two things in mind.

  50. The first thing we see in this passage is that Christians should always be ready

  51. to give a defence of their faith.

  52. Always be ready to give a defence.

  53. Now, last week we looked at the beginning of Acts chapter 21

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  54. and saw that Paul was told he would be bound in Jerusalem

  55. and handed over to the Gentiles.

  56. And people begged him not to go to Jerusalem.

  57. But Paul says in Acts chapter 20 verse 22

    Acts 20:22

  58. that he is compelled by the Holy Spirit to go to Jerusalem.

  59. And the prophecy from last week happens in verse 27.

  60. Read it with me.

  61. When the seven days were nearly over,

  62. some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple.

  63. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him.

  64. Now, these are probably Jews from Ephesus because of verse 29

  65. where it tells us that they recognised one of Paul's travel companions

  66. and assumed that Paul had taken a non-Jewish friend into the temple.

  67. Look at their accusations in verse 28.

  68. They say,

  69. Fellow Israelites, help us.

  70. This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere

  71. against our people and our law and this place, meaning the temple.

  72. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple

  73. and defiled this holy place.

  74. See, these men are accusing Paul of things

  75. they haven't actually even seen themselves.

  76. But they've assumed.

  77. They are hostile and lying in order to get the result they want.

  78. They want Paul dead.

  79. Now, this is a pattern we've already seen in Acts before, isn't it?

  80. Paul is accused of teaching against the Jews,

  81. against Jewish law and against the temple.

  82. But this time they create a mob.

  83. And verse 30 says that the whole city was aroused

  84. and people were running from every direction to join in.

  85. The Romans arrive and they bind Paul with chains

  86. and try to figure out what all the commotion is about.

  87. But look at verse 34.

  88. The crowd is confused.

  89. One shouting one thing, one another.

  90. They have no idea what they're even there for.

  91. This has all come about through hostility and lies.

  92. Now, what would you do in a situation

  93. where people have already started beating you to death?

  94. I think you'd see the police coming

  95. and you would welcome the rescue, wouldn't you?

  96. You'd go into custody.

  97. You would try to get as far away from the mob

  98. as humanly possible.

  99. It is our natural instinct to run from danger,

  100. to preserve our lives,

  101. to keep on fighting for another day.

  102. What does Paul do?

  103. At the end of verse 39, Paul says,

  104. please let me speak to the people.

  105. Paul responds to the hostility and lies of the crowd

  106. with honesty and loyalty.

  107. Look at chapter 22, verse 1.

  108. Paul says,

  109. brothers and fathers, listen to my defense.

  110. Paul begins like this to highlight their shared heritage

  111. and also his respect for the Jews.

  112. He doesn't go in all guns blazing.

  113. He isn't wanting payback.

  114. He isn't out to launch an attack on them.

  115. He simply wants to be honest about who he is

  116. and how his life has been changed.

  117. So Paul tells his story.

  118. He tells them what happened to make him so different

  119. from the Paul they maybe remember from a few years back.

  120. The Paul who went around persecuting Christians,

  121. who spent time going from town to town

  122. hunting Christians and throwing them in prison.

  123. Now we've already heard Paul's story before in Acts 9,

  124. haven't we?

  125. And we'll hear it again in Acts 26.

  126. But maybe as Alistair read it to us,

  127. you thought that it sounded a little bit different.

  128. That there were additional details or phrases

  129. used that we haven't seen before.

  130. Now why is that?

  131. It's because Paul is intentionally using words and concepts

  132. that would be easy for Jews to understand

  133. so that he can witness to them.

  134. He's highlighting that he is one of them,

  135. that they have the same background,

  136. but he's also highlighting his Jewish pedigree.

  137. He's showing them his religious CV,

  138. which for a Jew was very important.

  139. And so in verse 3, Paul says,

  140. I am a Jew born of Tarsus of Cilicia,

  141. but brought up in this city, meaning Jerusalem.

  142. I studied under Gamaliel and was thoroughly trained

  143. in the law of our ancestors.

  144. I was just as zealous for God as any of you are today.

  145. He then says how he persecuted Christians

  146. and even brings in the high priest

  147. and the whole council in verse 5 as his witnesses

  148. to the man he used to be.

  149. But something changes, doesn't it, in verse 6.

  150. Paul says on traveling to Damascus,

  151. about noon as I came near Damascus,

  152. suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me.

  153. And Jesus spoke to Paul from this bright light

  154. and asked, why are you persecuting me?

  155. Now again, notice how close Jesus is with his people.

  156. Jesus doesn't say, why are you persecuting my people?

  157. Jesus says, Saul, why are you persecuting me?

  158. And for a Jewish audience,

  159. that bright light from heaven in verse 6

  160. would make them think of nothing else

  161. other than God's presence,

  162. because God's presence was revealed to them

  163. in the Old Testament by a bright light.

  164. So Paul has been blinded by this light

  165. and is told by Jesus to go to Damascus

  166. where he'll meet Ananias,

  167. who Paul describes in verse 12

  168. as a devout observer of the law

  169. and highly respected by all the Jews living there.

  170. See, the accusations against Paul

  171. are that he is disregarding

  172. and encouraging Jews to disregard the law.

  173. He highlights that Ananias

  174. was a devout observer of the law.

  175. So with each little phrase,

  176. Paul is showing respect

  177. and being honest about his life story,

  178. highlighting that along the way

  179. he has met faithful, devout people

  180. who are all doing the will of God.

  181. And then in verse 14,

  182. after Paul has miraculously received his sight,

  183. Ananias says, read with me, verse 14,

  184. the God of our ancestors has chosen you

  185. to know his will

  186. and to see the righteous one

  187. and to hear words from his mouth.

  188. Now at this point,

  189. every Jew would know

  190. that the righteous one

  191. is a reference

  192. to God's promised Messiah

  193. from the Old Testament,

  194. the one who would come

  195. and save God's people.

  196. Then in verse 16,

  197. Paul is told to call

  198. on the name of Jesus,

  199. God's Messiah,

  200. to be saved through his death

  201. and resurrection

  202. and to be baptized.

  203. Now that is abundantly clear

  204. to everyone in this crowd

  205. listening to this.

  206. Paul isn't hiding anything.

  207. He isn't holding anything back.

  208. And so far,

  209. they've listened to him

  210. until verse 21,

  211. where he says,

  212. then the Lord said to me,

  213. go and I will send you

  214. far away to the Gentiles.

  215. Now the crowd hear this

  216. and they go wild.

  217. They conclude that

  218. the only good outcome

  219. from this

  220. is that Paul needs to die.

  221. They work themselves

  222. into a frenzy

  223. and in verse 23,

  224. they start throwing their cloaks

  225. and dust into the air.

  226. Expressions of lament,

  227. condemnation and anger.

  228. But notice through

  229. this whole interaction,

  230. Paul hasn't once

  231. gone on the offensive.

  232. He hasn't attacked

  233. those who attacked him,

  234. but he has faithfully

  235. and honestly relayed

  236. the story of his life

  237. and how Jesus changed him.

  238. Friends,

  239. as we go into a world

  240. that is increasingly moving

  241. away from the Bible,

  242. a world that is becoming

  243. increasingly antagonistic

  244. towards Christianity,

  245. a world where it feels like

  246. Christians are being sidelined

  247. for our faith,

  248. attacked maybe on every side,

  249. we need to do two things.

  250. First,

  251. we need to remember

  252. that Christianity,

  253. that the church

  254. has been opposed

  255. from the very beginning.

  256. This is nothing new.

  257. And yet,

  258. the Lord has continued

  259. to grow his kingdom,

  260. hasn't he?

  261. What started

  262. some 2,000 years ago

  263. with a small number

  264. of followers

  265. is now

  266. a number,

  267. a group of billions

  268. of Christians worldwide.

  269. Nothing will stop

  270. God's plan

  271. for people

  272. to hear

  273. about Jesus Christ.

  274. No amount

  275. of opposition

  276. will prevent

  277. the kingdom of God

  278. from growing

  279. and God

  280. will never,

  281. ever leave

  282. his people.

  283. The pattern

  284. throughout Acts

  285. and arguably

  286. throughout the whole

  287. of church history

  288. is that the gospel

  289. grows

  290. as it is opposed.

  291. See,

  292. when we become Christians,

  293. we are signing up

  294. for a life

  295. of being sidelined,

  296. a life of difficulty,

  297. a life of constant

  298. spiritual battle

  299. where people

  300. will try to silence us,

  301. people will try

  302. to stop us

  303. talking about Jesus,

  304. people will question

  305. our beliefs

  306. and the way

  307. we live our lives.

  308. But it is a glorious,

  309. glorious life

  310. of forgiveness,

  311. a glorious life

  312. of a relationship

  313. with our Creator

  314. and a life

  315. of eternal significance

  316. because we are living

  317. and working for God,

  318. the one who holds

  319. all things together

  320. and one day

  321. we will be

  322. in his presence forever.

  323. That is the future

  324. that awaits

  325. every Christian

  326. and no amount

  327. of opposition

  328. should hinder us

  329. from living

  330. for Jesus.

  331. The second thing

  332. we need to remember

  333. is that like Paul,

  334. we should always be ready

  335. to give a defense,

  336. always be ready

  337. to explain to people

  338. why we have hope

  339. in Jesus,

  340. why we live our lives

  341. for him

  342. and why they should

  343. listen to the message

  344. of forgiveness

  345. and peace with God

  346. that is offered

  347. through Jesus' death

  348. and resurrection.

  349. And the way we do that

  350. is important.

  351. The manner in which

  352. we speak with people

  353. about Jesus

  354. really matters.

  355. The only offensive thing

  356. about any Christian

  357. sharing the gospel

  358. should be the gospel

  359. itself.

  360. The gospel will

  361. naturally offend people.

  362. The Bible makes

  363. that clear.

  364. But like Paul does here,

  365. we need to be honest

  366. and respectful

  367. to those we share

  368. the gospel with

  369. and why we trust Jesus.

  370. Now this goes for

  371. in-person discussions

  372. and online interactions

  373. and the way we live

  374. our life.

  375. How many of you

  376. became Christians

  377. because someone

  378. was trying to win

  379. an argument

  380. rather than winning

  381. the person they

  382. were talking to?

  383. How many of you

  384. became Christians

  385. because someone

  386. pointed out your hypocrisy

  387. on a Facebook post comment?

  388. I'd say probably

  389. next to none.

  390. The way we speak

  391. to people about Jesus

  392. really matters.

  393. The life of a Christian

  394. should be one of

  395. constant witness

  396. to the goodness

  397. of Jesus

  398. and so we always

  399. need to be ready

  400. to give a defense.

  401. But the second thing

  402. we see in this passage

  403. is that God's ways

  404. are not our ways.

  405. God's ways

  406. are not our ways.

  407. So this crowd

  408. have just absolutely

  409. lost it with Paul

  410. and the Romans

  411. have to step in

  412. again and protect him

  413. but their means

  414. of getting to the truth

  415. also wasn't really ideal.

  416. Read verse 24 with me.

  417. The commander

  418. ordered that Paul

  419. be taken into the barracks.

  420. He directed

  421. that he be flogged

  422. and interrogated

  423. in order to find out

  424. why the people

  425. were shouting at him

  426. like this.

  427. See the Roman commander

  428. wanted to get to the truth

  429. of why the crowd

  430. was so mad at Paul

  431. because at this stage

  432. Christians were seen

  433. as a subsect

  434. of Judaism.

  435. They had no idea

  436. that Judaism

  437. and Christianity

  438. were different.

  439. That realization

  440. would come later on

  441. in the Roman Empire.

  442. So the commander

  443. decides to get

  444. to the truth

  445. by torture.

  446. And they stretch

  447. Paul out to be flogged

  448. but it all comes

  449. to a halt

  450. in verse 25

  451. when Paul asks

  452. the question

  453. is it legal

  454. for you to flog

  455. a Roman citizen

  456. who hasn't even

  457. been found guilty?

  458. See Paul knew

  459. that it was illegal

  460. to beat a Roman citizen

  461. without a fair trial

  462. and a guilty verdict.

  463. And so he uses this

  464. to his advantage

  465. as he has done

  466. before in Acts

  467. and so they retreat

  468. with their tail

  469. between their legs.

  470. Verse 29 says

  471. they withdraw

  472. immediately

  473. and are alarmed.

  474. Now this might sound

  475. like a minute detail

  476. but it gives Paul

  477. the opportunity

  478. to stand before

  479. the high court

  480. of the religious leaders

  481. in Acts 23.

  482. Look at chapter 22

  483. verse 30.

  484. The commander

  485. wanted to find out

  486. exactly why

  487. Paul was being

  488. accused by the Jews.

  489. So the next day

  490. he released him

  491. and ordered the chief priests

  492. and all the members

  493. of the Sanhedrin

  494. that's the Jewish

  495. high court

  496. to assemble.

  497. Then he brought Paul

  498. and had him stand

  499. before them.

  500. Paul stands

  501. before this group

  502. of men

  503. and basically says

  504. in chapter 23

  505. verse 1

  506. I'm innocent

  507. of the charges

  508. you bring against me.

  509. The only thing

  510. I have done

  511. is exactly

  512. what God

  513. has called me to do.

  514. Now he isn't saying

  515. he's a perfect man

  516. but he's saying

  517. that he has been faithful

  518. in carrying out

  519. his calling

  520. from God

  521. and the chief priest

  522. hears that

  523. and orders the man

  524. standing next to Paul

  525. to punch him

  526. in the face

  527. because he doesn't

  528. want to hear anything

  529. from this perceived

  530. blasphemer

  531. and Paul responds

  532. in verse 3

  533. by saying

  534. God will strike you

  535. you whitewashed wall

  536. you sit there

  537. to judge me

  538. according to the law

  539. yet you yourself

  540. violate the law

  541. by commanding

  542. that I be struck.

  543. Now at this point

  544. Paul could be

  545. denouncing

  546. faithless

  547. and corrupt

  548. leadership

  549. within the religious

  550. leaders of Jerusalem

  551. but it's more likely

  552. that he's just

  553. responding out of anger.

  554. I mean he's just

  555. been beaten

  556. by a mob

  557. nearly flogged

  558. by the Romans

  559. and now he's

  560. standing before

  561. the very court

  562. of religious leaders

  563. who are supposed

  564. to recognize

  565. God's work

  566. and he gets

  567. punched in the face.

  568. Paul is a human.

  569. He gets angry

  570. to be honest

  571. if that was me

  572. I would be raging

  573. but then he composes

  574. himself

  575. and after finding out

  576. that it was the

  577. high priest

  578. he had snapped at

  579. he says in verse 5

  580. brothers I did not

  581. realize that he was

  582. the high priest

  583. for it is written

  584. do not speak evil

  585. about the ruler

  586. of your people.

  587. Paul's being smart here.

  588. He's using the

  589. Old Testament law

  590. as part of his

  591. apology highlighting

  592. as he did with the

  593. crowd earlier on

  594. in the passage

  595. that he has

  596. respect for the

  597. Jewish leaders

  598. and their shared

  599. heritage

  600. and so Paul gets

  601. to speak again

  602. and very cunningly

  603. because he knows

  604. the political feel

  605. in the room

  606. he says in verse 6

  607. read it with me

  608. my brothers

  609. I am a Pharisee

  610. descended from

  611. Pharisees

  612. I stand on trial

  613. because of the

  614. hope of the

  615. resurrection of the

  616. dead

  617. and again

  618. this unleashes

  619. chaos

  620. because the

  621. Sadducees

  622. other religious

  623. leaders who were

  624. present didn't

  625. believe in the

  626. resurrection

  627. but this isn't

  628. quite like we see

  629. in the House of

  630. Commons in Westminster

  631. so you've probably

  632. seen clips of the

  633. different parties of

  634. the House of

  635. Parliament shouting

  636. across the benches

  637. at each other

  638. right laughing

  639. and passing

  640. what I assume

  641. are little jokes

  642. about each other's

  643. policies and

  644. character etc

  645. when it all starts

  646. to get a bit heated

  647. in the in Parliament

  648. the speaker says

  649. order

  650. and it may take a few

  651. moments but it goes

  652. quiet

  653. there is no speaker

  654. in this Jewish

  655. courtroom

  656. they are divided

  657. and it gets so

  658. heated

  659. the Romans

  660. have to take

  661. Paul away

  662. because it

  663. became so

  664. violent

  665. verse 10

  666. says that they

  667. feared he would

  668. be torn

  669. to pieces

  670. now put yourself

  671. in Paul's

  672. shoes

  673. his own

  674. countrymen

  675. people who

  676. he maybe even

  677. studied with

  678. people who

  679. he maybe stood

  680. shoulder to

  681. shoulder with

  682. in debates

  683. as they were

  684. praying in the

  685. temple

  686. people who

  687. maybe he even

  688. looked up to

  689. I've just

  690. tried to kill

  691. him twice

  692. can you imagine

  693. the betrayal he

  694. would feel

  695. imagine the pain

  696. he'd be in both

  697. physically and

  698. emotionally

  699. but I can also

  700. imagine him

  701. sitting there

  702. thinking I

  703. used to be

  704. these guys

  705. I have been

  706. on the other

  707. side

  708. because Paul

  709. went from being

  710. the persecutor

  711. to the

  712. persecuted

  713. Paul can

  714. speak so

  715. well to

  716. these people

  717. because he

  718. used to be

  719. in their

  720. shoes

  721. and many

  722. of us will

  723. remember a

  724. time when we

  725. weren't Christians

  726. we all know to

  727. some extent what

  728. it's like not to

  729. know the truth

  730. about Jesus

  731. and it should

  732. give that should

  733. give us a deep

  734. empathy and love

  735. for people rather

  736. than an attitude

  737. of I'm better

  738. than you

  739. because that's not

  740. true

  741. it should

  742. conjure in us

  743. a love for a

  744. world that is

  745. lost without

  746. Jesus

  747. Paul must be

  748. so hurt at

  749. this point

  750. but do you see

  751. that God is not

  752. distant

  753. God cares for

  754. his people

  755. look with me

  756. at verse 11

  757. the following

  758. night the Lord

  759. stood near Paul

  760. and said

  761. take courage

  762. as you have

  763. testified about

  764. me in Jerusalem

  765. so you must

  766. also testify

  767. in Rome

  768. now from a

  769. human perspective

  770. we might be

  771. tempted to look

  772. at Paul's time

  773. in Jerusalem

  774. and think that

  775. it was an

  776. evangelistic failure

  777. we have no

  778. record that

  779. anyone came to

  780. faith

  781. the only thing

  782. we know is

  783. that chaos

  784. and confusion

  785. ruled

  786. and yet Jesus

  787. appears to Paul

  788. and encourages him

  789. whilst this must

  790. be hard and

  791. maybe confusing

  792. for Paul

  793. this has been

  794. part of God's

  795. plan for the

  796. spread of the

  797. gospel

  798. from the very

  799. beginning

  800. remember back

  801. to Acts

    Acts 1:8

  802. chapter 1

  803. verse 8

  804. where Jesus

  805. said to his

  806. followers

  807. you will be

  808. my witnesses

  809. in Jerusalem

  810. and in all

  811. Judea and

  812. Samaria

  813. and to the

  814. ends of the

  815. earth

  816. all of this

  817. going on

  818. is part of

  819. God's plan

  820. that will take

  821. the gospel

  822. to places

  823. of power

  824. to people

  825. in power

  826. and to people

  827. who aren't

  828. in power

  829. why

  830. because every

  831. single person

  832. needs to hear

  833. about Jesus

  834. now when

  835. you're feeling

  836. completely out

  837. of place

  838. questioning

  839. why you are

  840. where you are

  841. questioning

  842. maybe even

  843. why you're

  844. here

  845. why has

  846. God put

  847. you in

  848. the place

  849. you are

  850. at that

  851. specific

  852. time

  853. prayerfully

  854. consider

  855. that you

  856. have

  857. opportunities

  858. to share

  859. the gospel

  860. maybe that's

  861. why God

  862. has placed

  863. you where

  864. you are

  865. Paul is

  866. here in

  867. the midst

  868. of this

  869. crowd

  870. who want

  871. him dead

  872. why

  873. to share

  874. the gospel

  875. you may

  876. be in a

  877. job that

  878. has no

  879. future

  880. prospects

  881. you may

  882. be looking

  883. to move

  884. house and

  885. it's just

  886. not coming

  887. about and

  888. you are

  889. getting

  890. frustrated

  891. could it

  892. be

  893. that God

  894. has placed

  895. you in

  896. those social

  897. networks

  898. to share

  899. Jesus with

  900. people

  901. think and

  902. pray

  903. why has

  904. God placed

  905. you where

  906. you are

  907. God wants

  908. all people

  909. to hear

  910. about Jesus

  911. so maybe

  912. that's why

  913. you are

  914. in that

  915. classroom

  916. that you

  917. really

  918. don't

  919. like

  920. maybe

  921. that's

  922. why

  923. you are

  924. in that

  925. particular

  926. flat

  927. with some

  928. housemates

  929. that you

  930. really

  931. struggle

  932. with

  933. maybe

  934. that's

  935. why

  936. you are

  937. with work

  938. colleagues

  939. who

  940. just

  941. wind you

  942. up the

  943. wrong

  944. way

  945. share

  946. Jesus

  947. with

  948. people

  949. God's

  950. ways

  951. are not

  952. our

  953. ways

  954. Jesus

  955. words

  956. in verse

  957. 11

  958. confirms

  959. Paul's

  960. own

  961. understanding

  962. of his

  963. calling

  964. to go

  965. to Jerusalem

  966. from chapter

  967. 19

  968. verse 21

  969. and the

  970. word spoken

  971. through the

  972. high priest

  973. in chapter

  974. 9

  975. verses 15

  976. to 16

  977. Paul was

  978. set aside

  979. to take

  980. the gospel

  981. to the

  982. Gentiles

  983. and he

  984. will

  985. suffer

  986. for the

  987. gospel

  988. that happens

  989. as another

  990. plot is

  991. discovered

  992. in chapter

  993. 23

  994. verses 12

  995. to 22

  996. to kill

  997. Paul

  998. and he

  999. will

  1000. eventually

  1001. end up

  1002. in Rome

  1003. God's

  1004. ways

  1005. are not

  1006. our

  1007. ways

  1008. we

  1009. are not

  1010. promised

  1011. a bed

  1012. of roses

  1013. we're not

  1014. promised

  1015. a pain

  1016. and suffering

  1017. free life

  1018. we are

  1019. promised

  1020. that a

  1021. life

  1022. of humble

  1023. submission

  1024. to Jesus

  1025. and faithfully

  1026. living for

  1027. him will

  1028. lead to a

  1029. life of

  1030. suffering

  1031. and persecution

  1032. and rejection

  1033. but it will

  1034. also lead

  1035. to people

  1036. hearing about

  1037. Jesus

  1038. and some

  1039. of them

  1040. coming to

  1041. eternal

  1042. life in

  1043. him

  1044. God

  1045. has a

  1046. plan

  1047. God

  1048. has a

  1049. mission

  1050. and nothing

  1051. no chaotic

  1052. group of

  1053. religious leaders

  1054. no Roman

  1055. commander

  1056. no slander

  1057. from your

  1058. work colleagues

  1059. no insults

  1060. from family

  1061. or friend

  1062. members

  1063. no oppression

  1064. or persecution

  1065. will ever

  1066. stop God's

  1067. plan from

  1068. happening

  1069. we're not

  1070. all called

  1071. to do

  1072. something

  1073. spectacular

  1074. we're not

  1075. all called

  1076. to go to

  1077. the far

  1078. off land

  1079. and proclaim

  1080. Jesus

  1081. to hostile

  1082. people

  1083. but we

  1084. are all

  1085. called

  1086. to go

  1087. to the

  1088. people

  1089. who we

  1090. live

  1091. next to

  1092. to live

  1093. faithfully

  1094. and to

  1095. proclaim

  1096. Jesus

  1097. to them

  1098. we all

  1099. know those

  1100. moments that

  1101. take us

  1102. by surprise

  1103. whether it's

  1104. in stories

  1105. movies

  1106. or in

  1107. real life

  1108. we're left

  1109. with questions

  1110. and we are

  1111. confused

  1112. asking ourselves

  1113. what good

  1114. could come

  1115. from any

  1116. of this

  1117. that's where

  1118. Paul found

  1119. himself in a

  1120. similar situation

  1121. this morning

  1122. and we

  1123. can learn

  1124. from how

  1125. he dealt

  1126. with it

  1127. and do

  1128. the same

  1129. in our

  1130. lives

  1131. too

  1132. Christians

  1133. always be

  1134. ready to

  1135. give a

  1136. defense of

  1137. your faith

  1138. always be

  1139. ready to

  1140. tell people

  1141. why you

  1142. have hope

  1143. in Jesus

  1144. and always

  1145. remember

  1146. that God's

  1147. ways are

  1148. not our

  1149. ways

  1150. let us pray

  1151. together

  1152. heavenly

  1153. heavenly father

  1154. with the

  1155. ups and

  1156. downs of

  1157. life

  1158. we realize

  1159. it's so

  1160. easy for

  1161. us to

  1162. feel that

  1163. you have

  1164. abandoned

  1165. us

  1166. we look

  1167. at our

  1168. lives

  1169. we look

  1170. at our

  1171. world

  1172. and we

  1173. think

  1174. that you

  1175. maybe

  1176. have

  1177. turned

  1178. away

  1179. father

  1180. we thank

  1181. you for

  1182. the truth

  1183. of your

  1184. word

  1185. that you

  1186. never

  1187. leave

  1188. your

  1189. people

  1190. lord

  1191. would you

  1192. help us

  1193. to live

  1194. according

  1195. to your

  1196. will

  1197. help us

  1198. to have

  1199. good

  1200. conversations

  1201. with people

  1202. about Jesus

  1203. help us

  1204. to willingly

  1205. and openly

  1206. share our

  1207. faith

  1208. and point

  1209. people to

  1210. the hope

  1211. that we

  1212. have

  1213. that eternal

  1214. hope

  1215. eternal

  1216. life that

  1217. is found

  1218. through Jesus

  1219. and his

  1220. death and

  1221. resurrection

  1222. and help

  1223. us remember

  1224. that your

  1225. ways are

  1226. not our

  1227. ways

  1228. but lord

  1229. doing this

  1230. by ourselves

  1231. is impossible

  1232. we need

  1233. you by

  1234. your holy

  1235. spirit to

  1236. come and

  1237. give us

  1238. strength

  1239. to give

  1240. us

  1241. opportunities

  1242. and to

  1243. give us

  1244. boldness

  1245. to take

  1246. them when

  1247. they arise

  1248. father help

  1249. us be

  1250. faithful

  1251. as we

  1252. serve you

  1253. in Jesus

  1254. name we

  1255. pray

  1256. amen
