  1. Now we are all lured in by the promise of quick fixes, aren't we?

  2. So we live in a world that wants things immediately and without much effort.

  3. So maybe you're like me and you're lured in by the promise of six pack abs in 60 days

  4. from someone who looks very athletic in the video.

  5. I'm pretty sure it's just the lighting.

  6. Maybe you want to lose weight and so you're pulled in by those adverts

  7. that speak about the next superfood or that fruit that basically burns fat as you chew.

  8. Maybe it's that cleaning product that promises to get away that stain

  9. that you've had on the carpet for 30 odd years.

  10. Or maybe it's that new kitchen appliance that the person on TV says you cannot live without.

  11. Or it's that face cream that promises to keep wrinkles at bay until your dying day.

  12. We all love a quick fix.

  13. But in reality, these kind of overnight success ideas,

  14. whilst they feed or desire for things to be done quickly,

  15. with minimal effort and with so-called guaranteed outcomes,

  16. they don't or they very rarely actually work.

  17. Because people achieve goals not by going with the newest quick fix fad or trend,

  18. but we achieve things by consistency.

  19. The key to getting better at something or achieving a certain goal that you have

  20. is not a quick dash, it's not a sprint,

  21. but the consistent, dedicated discipline of hard work that will get you there.

  22. Ask any doctor, any bricklayer, any plasterer, any muscly person,

  23. they will tell you that the key to their achievements and the place they are in their careers or their appearance,

  24. whatever it may be, the key is consistency.

  25. And the same is true for the Christian life.

  26. Because if we want to grow spiritually as a whole church family,

  27. if we want to become a church family that is rooted in the Bible,

  28. that has a desire to see the kingdom of God grow,

  29. if we want our faith as individuals to grow into maturity,

  30. then we need to be consistent.

  31. This morning, as we conclude our series in Acts,

  32. I want us to think about what that looks like.

  33. What is the consistent Christian life?

  34. In our short passage for today,

  35. we see three things that make up a consistent Christian life.

  36. And all of these things have come up in the book of Acts before,

  37. but now we see them all in one place.

  38. And so this morning we sit with Paul, who is still a prisoner,

  39. and we can learn that even now, right at the end,

  40. he has remained consistent in his walk with Jesus.

  41. What a wonderful thing to be considering today,

  42. as Jack has publicly declared his faith in Jesus.

  43. Now he's not here.

  44. Oh no, there he is.

  45. Jack, as you know, the Christian life will not be easy.

  46. Many bumps and obstacles will come in your way,

  47. and many people in this room can attest to that.

  48. But out of your love for Jesus,

  49. and out of your desire to serve him,

  50. live the consistent life until Jesus returns,

  51. or you are called home.

  52. And my prayer is that each of us would do the same

  53. as we go through this life.

  54. So here are three things that will help us consistently live

  55. the Christian life from the end of Acts chapter 28.

    Acts 28 chapter mention

  56. The first thing that we see is that like Paul,

  57. we should make the most of every opportunity

  58. in verses 17 to 23.

  59. So we need to remember that Paul has been in chains

  60. since chapter 21.

  61. He's been a prisoner.

  62. And as we saw last week with Ian,

  63. he eventually did travel all the way to Rome.

  64. Now whilst in prison,

  65. Paul wrote some of his letters to different churches,

  66. and we get a glimpse of how he was doing,

  67. what his priority was as he was imprisoned.

  68. Now I know that if I was wrongly imprisoned,

  69. on false charges that had no basis,

  70. I would be pleading my innocence non-stop,

  71. trying to convince my captors that they had the wrong guy,

  72. that I should be released.

  73. That's probably everyone's natural response, right?

  74. But what does Paul do?

  75. Well, we get a glimpse in Colossians chapter 4, verse 2,

    Colossians 4:2

  76. where Paul's writing to a church,

  77. and this is what he says.

  78. Devote yourselves to prayer,

  79. being watchful and thankful,

  80. and pray for us too,

  81. that God may open a door for our message,

  82. so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ

  83. for which I am in chains.

  84. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly,

  85. as I should.

  86. So as Paul is sitting in chains in Rome,

  87. most likely chained to a soldier,

  88. his prayer request isn't that these chains would be gone,

  89. isn't that he'd be found innocent,

  90. but he asks that the church would pray,

  91. that he would publicly and correctly

  92. make Jesus known to all those around him.

  93. Paul is living consistently,

  94. whether in chains or a free man,

  95. he always made the most of every opportunity

  96. to share Jesus.

  97. And he does the same in Acts chapter 28.

    Acts 28 chapter mention

  98. Look at verse 17 with me that we read earlier.

  99. Three days later,

  100. he, that's Paul,

  101. called together the local Jewish leaders.

  102. So not only was Paul under house arrest,

  103. as verse 16 says,

  104. which would probably mean a rotation of gods

  105. who were quite literally a captive audience

  106. to the message of Jesus.

  107. Verse 30 also says that he had visitors

  108. who came to the house who wanted to see him.

  109. And then in verse 17,

  110. he gathers local Jews to talk to them.

  111. So even in Rome,

  112. where he is in chains on false accusations

  113. from some Jews,

  114. even here he's trying to reach them

  115. with the message of Jesus.

  116. So Paul meets the Jews first in verse 17

  117. at his own request.

  118. And then again,

  119. a second time in verse 23 at their request.

  120. And this time it's a bigger crowd.

  121. Every opportunity Paul gets,

  122. he uses to share the gospel.

  123. Now, so often we wait for the so-called

  124. perfect conditions to share Jesus with people,

  125. don't we?

  126. We almost want people to come up to us

  127. and ask us,

  128. well, why do you believe in Jesus?

  129. But realistically,

  130. that won't happen all that often.

  131. Instead, we should be living

  132. the consistent Christian life

  133. and making the most of every opportunity.

  134. Telling people that we were at church

  135. on the weekend

  136. and what we were thinking about.

  137. Opening up about your struggles

  138. and how Jesus has helped you

  139. or is helping you

  140. through the storms of life.

  141. Explaining to people

  142. why you won't participate

  143. in certain activities or behaviors.

  144. explaining why you hold certain viewpoints

  145. on political or cultural issues.

  146. These are simple ways

  147. that we can make the most

  148. of every opportunity

  149. to share Jesus.

  150. But it also means standing up

  151. for our faith

  152. and taking opportunities

  153. to speak about Jesus,

  154. even in difficult circumstances.

  155. In verse 22,

  156. the Jews say that they hear

  157. people everywhere

  158. talking against this sect,

  159. meaning Christianity.

  160. And yet Paul continues to speak,

  161. as verse 31 says,

  162. with boldness

  163. and without hindrance.

  164. Now we've seen that before.

  165. Remember in Acts chapter 21,

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  166. after a big crowd

  167. started trying to beat Paul to death,

  168. what did he do?

  169. When he was saved

  170. by the Roman soldiers,

  171. he stopped and said,

  172. can I please speak to the crowd?

  173. And he started to teach them

  174. about Jesus.

  175. What does he do

  176. whilst he's a prisoner

  177. time and time again,

  178. as Paul has his back up against it?

  179. Threats coming at him

  180. from every side.

  181. He consistently lived

  182. the Christian life,

  183. made the most of every opportunity

  184. to share Jesus.

  185. And we should do the same.

  186. Make the most of every opportunity.

  187. And the second thing we see

  188. to help us consistently

  189. live the Christian life

  190. that we see in Paul here

  191. is that we should teach

  192. everyone about Jesus.

  193. Verses 23 to 31.

  194. As has happened before

  195. in Acts 13,

  196. the second time the Jews come

  197. to see Paul,

  198. a larger crowd appears.

  199. We see that in verse 23.

  200. So it's the Jews

  201. who arranged this second meeting

  202. because they're intrigued

  203. by what Paul thinks

  204. and want to hear him speak.

  205. So what does he do?

  206. Well, he talks to them

  207. in verse 20.

  208. He said in verse 23,

  209. it says,

  210. he witnessed to them

  211. from morning till evening,

  212. explaining about the kingdom of God

  213. and from the law of Moses

  214. and from the prophets,

  215. he tried to persuade them

  216. about Jesus.

  217. Now notice two key things

  218. about Paul's witnessing

  219. to these people in that verse.

  220. He spoke to them

  221. from morning till night

  222. and from cover to cover.

  223. This week at weekend

  224. at the holiday club

  225. that we've already heard about,

  226. Jack and I were leading

  227. a discussion group together.

  228. And one of the questions

  229. we asked the children was,

  230. if someone came to you

  231. and asked you to tell them

  232. about Jesus,

  233. what would you say?

  234. Now they gave some

  235. really good answers,

  236. most of them really helpful.

  237. But it probably took

  238. about three or four minutes

  239. and they were done.

  240. Often people are taught today

  241. to be able to share their story

  242. of how they came to know Jesus

  243. in three minutes.

  244. That is a good thing to do.

  245. But that's not what Paul does here.

  246. See, he doesn't give

  247. a short gospel presentation.

  248. He doesn't give his listeners

  249. a quick two ways to live booklet.

  250. Instead, he spends hours

  251. talking to these people

  252. about Jesus,

  253. explaining about the kingdom of God.

  254. Paul takes his time

  255. to explain God's great plan.

  256. Now we will most likely

  257. never be in a context to do this.

  258. I don't know anyone

  259. who will sit and have

  260. an engaged conversation

  261. about one topic

  262. or about something

  263. from morning until evening.

  264. But we can spend time

  265. with our non-Christian friends

  266. and family members

  267. and teach them about God.

  268. Invest in them.

  269. Talk about why we believe

  270. what we do,

  271. why we hold certain positions.

  272. Because witnessing to someone

  273. isn't a parachute situation

  274. where you mention Jesus,

  275. you maybe even quote John 3.16

  276. and then you're out the door again.

  277. Paul is investing time

  278. in these people

  279. and telling them about Jesus

  280. from morning till evening.

  281. But notice the second thing

  282. is that he does it

  283. from cover to cover.

  284. Paul doesn't just mention

  285. one little thing

  286. or one aspect of the gospel

  287. that is maybe bite-sized

  288. or easy to handle.

  289. But instead he sits them down

  290. for a very long Bible study.

  291. So often I hear people say

  292. that we only need to tell people

  293. that God is love.

  294. And that is right.

  295. God is love.

  296. And we do need to tell people that.

  297. But if we are to faithfully

  298. witness about God

  299. and teach everyone about Jesus,

  300. then we need to be holistic

  301. in our witnessing.

  302. So yes, we share that God is love.

  303. We also share that God is just,

  304. that God is good,

  305. and that God is judge.

  306. We need to share with people

  307. from Genesis to Revelation,

  308. the whole counsel of God.

  309. And that means

  310. that we need to know our Bibles.

  311. One of the most encouraging things

  312. when I do house visits

  313. is sitting with someone

  314. who's elderly

  315. and they pull out their Bible

  316. that has clearly been used

  317. and it is in bits.

  318. So encouraging.

  319. We have the immense privilege

  320. of having God's word

  321. in so many accessible ways today.

  322. We should use all of them

  323. for our own spiritual benefit,

  324. but also so that we can faithfully

  325. point people to Jesus

  326. from the beginning of the Bible

  327. to the end of God's big story.

  328. It is an absolute joy

  329. to be used by God

  330. to share the good news of Jesus.

  331. We sit here as a result

  332. of that this morning.

  333. Remember way back

  334. in the beginning of Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  335. the early church started

  336. with a small group

  337. in an upper room,

  338. but through the power of God,

  339. through a wonderful work

  340. of the Holy Spirit,

  341. through the efforts

  342. of God's people

  343. constantly sharing the gospel,

  344. we sit here

  345. having heard about Jesus.

  346. We are here as a result

  347. of what we see

  348. in the book of Acts.

  349. Now we can read Acts,

  350. which is a historical account

  351. of the beginning

  352. of the church.

  353. We can read the truth

  354. that the gospel grows

  355. as it is opposed

  356. and we can see God

  357. at work in wonderful ways,

  358. but it didn't stop

  359. in Acts chapter 28,

    Acts 28:31

  360. verse 31,

  361. because the same thing

  362. happens today.

  363. The Lord continues to work

  364. and the gospel continues

  365. to go forth

  366. as men and women,

  367. through the power

  368. of the Spirit,

  369. share Jesus with the world.

  370. And the responses

  371. will be the same now

  372. as they were back then.

  373. Look with me at verse 24.

  374. Some were convinced

  375. by what he,

  376. that's Paul,

  377. said,

  378. but others would not believe.

  379. They disagreed

  380. among themselves

  381. and began to leave

  382. after Paul made

  383. his final statement.

  384. Paul goes on to quote

  385. from Isaiah,

  386. highlighting that these people

  387. had eyes to see the signs.

  388. They had ears to hear

  389. the message of Jesus

  390. and yet their hearts

  391. were hard.

  392. They were unwilling

  393. to see the work of God

  394. that was happening

  395. right in front of them.

  396. They were unwilling

  397. to listen to the truth

  398. of Jesus

  399. and repent

  400. and put their trust in him.

  401. Now as we go out

  402. into this world

  403. and we share the gospel

  404. with people,

  405. there will be those

  406. who respond

  407. with faith

  408. and we greatly rejoice

  409. at that new life.

  410. There will also be those

  411. who reject the gospel

  412. and that is not on us.

  413. God is the one

  414. who brings about salvation.

  415. We just have the privilege

  416. of sharing Jesus

  417. with others.

  418. Living the consistent

  419. Christian life

  420. looks like making the most

  421. of every opportunity.

  422. It looks like teaching

  423. everyone about Jesus.

  424. And the third thing

  425. that we see in these verses

  426. is that to live

  427. the consistent Christian life

  428. we need to remember

  429. that the gospel comes

  430. with a house key.

  431. Look at verses 30

  432. to 31 with me.

  433. For two whole years

  434. Paul stayed there

  435. in his own rented house

  436. and welcomed all

  437. who came to see him.

  438. He proclaimed the kingdom

  439. of God

  440. and taught

  441. about the Lord Jesus Christ

  442. with all boldness

  443. and without hindrance.

  444. For two years

  445. Paul was under house arrest

  446. using the opportunity

  447. to teach those

  448. who visited him

  449. but also using it

  450. to write a lot.

  451. While he was in Rome

  452. he wrote the New Testament

  453. letters of Ephesians,

  454. Philippians,

  455. Colossians and Philemon.

  456. So even in the midst

  457. of all of Paul's limitations

  458. being under house arrest,

  459. under constant supervision,

  460. he wouldn't have been

  461. in a big mansion

  462. that would have allowed

  463. tons of people

  464. to come visit him

  465. all at once.

  466. But none of that stopped him.

  467. Paul used to travel

  468. from town to town,

  469. from synagogue to synagogue.

  470. He couldn't do that anymore.

  471. He's stuck in one place.

  472. Now he could have seen

  473. all of that as a hindrance

  474. to his ministry.

  475. He could have given up.

  476. He could have retreated

  477. into isolation,

  478. thrown down his tools,

  479. but instead he embraced it

  480. and used the circumstances

  481. that he was in

  482. to continue to share Jesus

  483. through hospitality

  484. for two years.

  485. He welcomed

  486. and he witnessed.

  487. He used the means

  488. that he had

  489. to proclaim

  490. the kingdom of God

  491. and teach people

  492. about Jesus.

  493. Now maybe you live alone.

  494. Maybe you think

  495. that you can't cook

  496. amazing food.

  497. Maybe you have

  498. a tiny dining room.

  499. Maybe you don't even

  500. have a dining room.

  501. None of those things

  502. are limitations

  503. to stop you

  504. inviting people

  505. into your life

  506. and sharing the gospel

  507. with them.

  508. Some of the best

  509. conversations

  510. I've had with people

  511. are sitting on a couch

  512. with a TV

  513. in the background

  514. with a takeaway

  515. on my knees

  516. or a cup of tea

  517. in my hand

  518. or a glass of water.

  519. We don't need

  520. to meet certain criteria

  521. to share Jesus

  522. in our homes.

  523. We can use

  524. what God has given us

  525. to welcome

  526. and witness.

  527. Paul wasn't the only one

  528. who did this.

  529. Jesus,

  530. most of Jesus'

  531. conversations

  532. about the kingdom of God

  533. and his teachings

  534. happened in hospitality

  535. settings

  536. around a dinner table

  537. or over a meal.

  538. See,

  539. we can look at people

  540. like Paul

  541. and maybe some of the

  542. well-known evangelists

  543. today

  544. and think that

  545. there's something

  546. special about them.

  547. That they're doing

  548. the work

  549. so I can sit back

  550. and relax

  551. and do nothing.

  552. The reality is

  553. that every single Christian

  554. has a unique

  555. opportunity

  556. to reach certain

  557. groups of people.

  558. You'll rob shoulders

  559. with your friends

  560. and family

  561. and I'll rob shoulders

  562. with mine.

  563. I probably won't be able

  564. to reach the wealthy

  565. businessman

  566. working in a law firm

  567. down on Lothian Road

  568. but you might.

  569. I won't have the opportunity

  570. to sit next to your

  571. colleagues at work

  572. in the lunch break

  573. during a lunch break

  574. but you do.

  575. I won't have the chance

  576. to speak to your friend

  577. who is struggling

  578. and looking for hope

  579. in life

  580. but you do.

  581. Your life

  582. and your home

  583. provides you

  584. with the perfect

  585. opportunity

  586. to live the Christian

  587. life.

  588. As you remember

  589. the gospel

  590. comes with a house key

  591. and you boldly

  592. without hindrance

  593. proclaim the kingdom

  594. of God

  595. and teach people

  596. about Jesus.

  597. Verse 31

  598. is the final thing

  599. said about Paul

  600. in Acts.

  601. It's a summary sentence

  602. of his last two years

  603. the last two years

  604. of his life.

  605. He proclaimed

  606. the kingdom of God

  607. and taught about

  608. the Lord Jesus Christ

  609. with all boldness

  610. and without hindrance.

  611. Now I wonder

  612. if you asked someone

  613. to summarize

  614. the last two years

  615. of your life

  616. in a sentence or two

  617. what would they say?

  618. Is the first thing

  619. that would come to mind

  620. that they would say

  621. about you

  622. that you proclaim

  623. the kingdom of God

  624. with all boldness?

  625. Is that a determining

  626. factor in your life?

  627. Or would it be

  628. that you're a nice person

  629. who's managed

  630. to perfect a new skill

  631. over lockdown?

  632. Or would it be

  633. that you're a busy person

  634. who still tries

  635. to make time

  636. to see other people?

  637. I would love it

  638. if all of our lives

  639. could be summarized

  640. by people saying

  641. that we are men

  642. and women

  643. who love the Lord

  644. who love his word

  645. who love his church

  646. who love the lost

  647. and who spent

  648. their time

  649. proclaiming Jesus

  650. to a world

  651. that is dying

  652. without him.

  653. This might sound

  654. like a really funny way

  655. to end the book of Acts.

  656. There's no mention

  657. of Paul meeting

  658. the church in Rome.

  659. No mention

  660. of his trial

  661. before Caesar.

  662. No mention

  663. of his death either.

  664. And I think Luke

  665. has done that deliberately

  666. to take the focus

  667. off of Paul

  668. and instead

  669. to focus

  670. on the continued work

  671. of the spread

  672. of God's word.

  673. You know those

  674. series you see

  675. on television

  676. or you watch online?

  677. You get to that final episode

  678. of the series

  679. where everything's

  680. been building up

  681. to this point.

  682. You're waiting

  683. for the conclusion

  684. and then it says

  685. to be continued

  686. and you scream

  687. at the telly.

  688. Verse 31

  689. is basically

  690. a big to be continued sign

  691. because the focus

  692. through our Acts

  693. has been the spread

  694. of God's word,

  695. the spread of the gospel.

  696. We see in Acts

    Acts 6:7

  697. chapter 6 verse 7

  698. in chapter 9

  699. verse 31

  700. in chapter 12

  701. verse 24

  702. in chapter 16

  703. verse 5

  704. in chapter 19

  705. verse 20

  706. time and time again

  707. the focus

  708. has been

  709. on the gospel

  710. spreading

  711. and it's always

  712. been the consistent

  713. same message

  714. of Jesus Christ.

  715. No frills,

  716. no softening it,

  717. no sugarcoating it

  718. but simply presenting

  719. the good news

  720. of Jesus

  721. to the world

  722. and leaving the results

  723. up to God.

  724. Friends,

  725. as we go into this world

  726. and we try

  727. to live the Christian life

  728. we need to know

  729. the gospel.

  730. We never graduate

  731. from the gospel

  732. but we should

  733. and we shouldn't be

  734. promoting

  735. any other messages

  736. but consistently

  737. telling people

  738. the same message

  739. that everyone

  740. is born

  741. into this life

  742. in rebellion

  743. against God.

  744. Naturally

  745. his enemies

  746. and deserving

  747. of his wrath

  748. that nobody

  749. can save themselves.

  750. We can never

  751. be good enough

  752. or do enough

  753. to be right

  754. with God

  755. on our own

  756. but God

  757. sent his son

  758. Jesus

  759. to take the

  760. punishment

  761. that we all

  762. deserve

  763. so that all

  764. those who

  765. believe in him

  766. are forgiven

  767. and made right

  768. with God.

  769. Jesus died

  770. on the cross

  771. dying the death

  772. that we all

  773. deserve.

  774. He rose victorious

  775. from the grave

  776. defeating sin

  777. defeating death

  778. and has gone

  779. to the Father

  780. in heaven

  781. where he is

  782. preparing a place

  783. for his people

  784. and one day

  785. when he returns

  786. all the Lord's

  787. people will gather

  788. in his presence

  789. for eternity

  790. and all those

  791. who reject

  792. Jesus

  793. will

  794. in this life

  795. will spend

  796. eternity

  797. under the just

  798. wrath of God.

  799. You see

  800. the end of Acts

  801. is just the end

  802. of the beginning

  803. of the story.

  804. The story

  805. of the spread

  806. of God's word

  807. continues today

  808. as Christians

  809. go out

  810. and consistently

  811. live the Christian

  812. life.

  813. As Jack

  814. as we all

  815. go into our work

  816. our friend circles

  817. our families

  818. as we make

  819. the most

  820. of every opportunity

  821. as we teach

  822. everyone

  823. about Jesus

  824. and as we remember

  825. that the gospel

  826. comes with a house key.

  827. See we're all

  828. lured in

  829. by the promise

  830. of a quick fix.

  831. We live in a world

  832. that want things

  833. that want things

  834. immediately

  835. without much effort

  836. whether that's

  837. getting six pack

  838. abs

  839. the newest

  840. kitchen gadget

  841. or a miracle

  842. cleaning product

  843. we love

  844. a quick fix

  845. but they rarely

  846. work

  847. because the key

  848. is consistency.

  849. That's how we

  850. become better

  851. at our jobs

  852. that's how we

  853. achieve the things

  854. we want

  855. and it's also

  856. how we continue

  857. to grow

  858. and mature

  859. in our faith

  860. as we consistently

  861. live the Christian

  862. life.

  863. That is how

  864. God's word

  865. spreads.

  866. See the book of Acts

  867. is a snapshot

  868. of how the early church

  869. grew and it should

  870. encourage us

  871. encourage us

  872. to see how great

  873. our God is

  874. and encourage us

  875. to continue that work

  876. for him

  877. and for his glory.

  878. Let's pray together.

  879. Heavenly Father

  880. we thank you

  881. for the immense

  882. privilege it is

  883. to be your

  884. witnesses in this

  885. world.

  886. Father we thank you

  887. for the book of Acts

  888. and all the things

  889. we've been learning

  890. over the months

  891. that we've been

  892. in this series

  893. but Lord we pray

  894. that by your spirit

  895. you would enable us

  896. to remember

  897. everything that we learn

  898. not only to remember

  899. it but also to put

  900. it into practice

  901. that we would be

  902. your witnesses

  903. in Edinburgh

  904. in our workplaces

  905. in our family circles

  906. and in our friend circles

  907. would we point people

  908. to you

  909. with that same

  910. consistent message

  911. of Jesus Christ.

  912. Father would you

  913. help us grow

  914. in our love for you

  915. our love for your church

  916. our love for your word

  917. and our love

  918. for the lost people

  919. of this world.

  920. In Jesus name we pray

  921. Amen.
