  1. Thanks, Jonathan, and thanks to Fiona again also for music this evening.

  2. We're continuing in the parables of Jesus and Luke's Gospel,

  3. and you might like to turn to Luke chapter 14 and just have your Bible open as we go along.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  4. It's a great parable, and it's a great invitation.

  5. And I just want to start by saying that this parable is for us today.

  6. It was spoken, of course, by Jesus all those years ago and written down.

  7. But the parable is for us today.

  8. The invitation, in fact, still stands, and you're invited to come to the great banquet.

  9. What does that mean?

  10. Well, with God's help, I'll try and explain the best I can as we go along.

  11. But the main point to say is that you're invited to come.

  12. And if I can do anything at all this evening, I just want to make that the main point,

  13. invite you to come and to put your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus.

  14. So if you're here in the church this evening or you're listening online,

  15. and you haven't yet accepted that invitation, then here's an opportunity to do so this evening.

  16. One day, of course, it will be too late, but now is the day of salvation.

  17. Now the invitation still stands.

  18. And if you're here this evening and you're already a Christian,

  19. you've accepted that invitation and you've trusted in the Lord,

  20. well, I hope that also in this passage you'll find a lot of encouragement

  21. and by way of challenge too.

  22. And I think there's some really deep theology in this passage as well.

  23. And so I think there'll be something for everyone here in this passage this evening.

  24. So let's dive right in.

  25. And the first question to ask really is, what are we reading about here?

  26. And the first thing to note was that Jesus was at a dinner and he was speaking about a dinner.

  27. And so I think the words of Jesus must have been especially relevant to those who originally heard Jesus.

  28. He was speaking to people right where they were at.

  29. He was speaking about a dinner and they were sitting at a meal table.

  30. But we also note that all was not well at the table.

  31. And you can read about this if you just glance back to the beginning of chapter 14.

  32. Jesus was in the house of a ruler of the Pharisees.

  33. And all the guests present were Pharisees and lawyers.

  34. And you can see that there was some unrest at the table,

  35. particularly about who would get the most important seats at the dinner.

  36. And you can just imagine the sort of thing that was going on here.

  37. One guy is maybe just a bit annoyed that someone else got the most important seat.

  38. Why should he get the important seat?

  39. That should be me that's sitting there next to Jesus.

  40. And so you can imagine the sort of thing that was going on in that occasion.

  41. People were trying to get the most important seat.

  42. And the whole thing was pretty sad.

  43. And so Jesus deals with the problem directly.

  44. And he reminds them that God's way is so different from the ways of the world.

  45. Now the way of the world is me first.

  46. But Jesus reminded them it's totally different in God's kingdom.

  47. Remember how Jesus humbled himself and became obedient to death.

  48. Even such a death as the death of the cross.

  49. And what humility that was.

  50. And as followers of Jesus, this is to be our way as well.

  51. Not me first.

  52. But rather we're to be others first.

  53. And how important is that in church life as well?

  54. And how sad when that humility is lacking.

  55. Jesus is our example.

  56. But Jesus is far more than just our example.

  57. And when we think of his atoning death on the cross,

  58. we remember that what he did was not just an example for us to follow,

  59. although certainly we are to take up our cross and follow him.

  60. But Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins,

  61. to take the punishment that we deserve,

  62. to pay the price that we could never pay.

  63. He was buried and rose again from the dead on the third day.

  64. And he's risen, ascended to the Father's right hand.

  65. And one day he will return in glory and in judgment.

  66. But for now the call goes out to all to come to him

  67. and to accept the invitation by faith.

  68. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son,

  69. that whosoever believeth in him should not perish,

  70. but have everlasting life.

  71. And those who accept the invitation will not perish,

  72. but will have eternal life.

  73. And Jesus reminds the people at the meal

  74. about the kind of people who are on God's guest list.

  75. It's not our rich neighbours or our own friends and relatives,

  76. but the poor and the crippled and the lame and the blind.

  77. And those who have no way of returning the favour.

  78. And what a difference that is.

  79. How different is God's kingdom to the way of the world?

  80. The world says meek is weak,

  81. but God says the meek shall inherit the earth.

  82. We're going to look at the parable of the banquet itself now,

  83. but you can see what I'm getting at with these words of introduction.

  84. A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.

  85. And this parable about an earthly banquet

  86. speaks of a heavenly banquet.

  87. An entrance to it is by faith in God,

  88. the one who has issued the invitation.

  89. So let's just take a minute to identify the main characters in the parable.

  90. Who do they refer to?

  91. Well, first of all, there's the master of the house.

  92. And the master of the house is God.

  93. The gospel invitation is sent out by the servant.

  94. And he goes out to invite people to come in.

  95. Now, who is the servant?

  96. Well, I think when it comes to this question,

  97. there are quite a range of opinions.

  98. There are those who refer to the servant as the prophets,

  99. or perhaps John the Baptist,

  100. or the evangelists, or the apostles.

  101. And maybe the servant refers to us as believers,

  102. or to Jesus himself.

  103. In the Bible, especially in the book of Isaiah,

  104. Jesus is spoken of as the great servant of the Lord.

  105. And you might like to turn to Isaiah 42.

  106. And we'll just read a few verses from there

  107. where Jesus is spoken of as the servant.

  108. Isaiah in chapter 42.

  109. Behold my servant, whom I uphold,

  110. my chosen, in whom my soul delights.

  111. I have put my spirit upon him,

  112. and he will bring forth justice to the nations.

  113. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice,

  114. or make it heard in the street.

  115. A bruised reed he will not break,

  116. and a faintly burning wick he will not quench.

  117. He will faithfully bring forth justice.

  118. He will not grow faint or be discouraged,

  119. till he has established justice in the earth,

  120. and the coastlands wait for his law.

  121. And then if we turn over to the New Testament as well,

  122. in Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  123. and some really well-known verses there.

  124. Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  125. and starting at verse 5.

  126. Philippians 2 verse 5.

    Philippians 2:5

  127. Have this mind among yourselves,

  128. which is yours in Christ Jesus,

  129. who, though he was in the form of God,

  130. did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

  131. but made himself nothing,

  132. taking the form of a servant,

  133. being born in the likeness of men.

  134. And being found in human form,

  135. he humbled himself by becoming obedient

  136. to the point of death,

  137. even death on a cross.

  138. Therefore, God has highly exalted him

  139. and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

  140. so that at the name of Jesus,

  141. every knee should bow in heaven

  142. and on earth and under the earth,

  143. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord

  144. to the glory of God the Father.

  145. So you see how the interpretation fits here.

  146. On the one hand,

  147. we as believers in the Lord Jesus

  148. are called to go out into all the world

  149. and to preach the gospel.

  150. We are ambassadors for Christ.

  151. So I think it's fair to say

  152. that all of the views I just mentioned

  153. about the identity of the servant in this parable

  154. are correct.

  155. Ultimately, the Lord Jesus

  156. is the great servant of the Lord,

  157. the one who is fully God and fully man.

  158. The word became flesh

  159. and dwelt among us,

  160. and who during his earthly ministry

  161. pursued his goal of calling people

  162. out of darkness

  163. and into his glorious light.

  164. But right down through the Bible history,

  165. we can see that the Old Testament prophets,

  166. people like John the Baptist

  167. and the apostles,

  168. all were in a very special way

  169. called to speak God's word

  170. and to invite people to come to him.

  171. But what about us today?

  172. I mean, none of us here are apostles

  173. or prophets,

  174. as Elijah was a prophet

  175. and Peter was an apostle.

  176. Peter and John were among the 12 apostles.

  177. But those of us who are believers

  178. in the Lord Jesus

  179. are sent ones.

  180. We are sent out with the gospel.

  181. That's what the word apostle means

  182. in the original.

  183. We are not apostles with a capital A

  184. as the 12 apostles of the Lord,

  185. but certainly with a small a.

  186. And we have a great commission

  187. and we are called to go

  188. into all the world.

  189. We are servants

  190. and we are called to go out

  191. and to invite.

  192. We may be unworthy servants,

  193. but we can do what we can.

  194. We can serve the Lord

  195. and preach the gospel

  196. and invite people to come in

  197. and as our text says,

  198. to compel people to come in.

  199. And so there's the master of the house,

  200. there's the servant

  201. who goes out with the invitation to all,

  202. to the streets and lanes

  203. and to the highways and hedges.

  204. And finally,

  205. there are two groups of people.

  206. The first group are those

  207. who accept the invitation

  208. and come to the great banquet.

  209. And then there's a second group

  210. are those who reject the invitation.

  211. And we'll see that they make excuses

  212. and they turn down the invitation.

  213. They reject it and they rubbish it.

  214. And they are ultimately excluded

  215. from the banquet.

  216. And ultimately, of course,

  217. in the teaching of the parable,

  218. remembering that there's a heavenly meaning

  219. in the story,

  220. those who reject the invitation

  221. will not be in heaven.

  222. They will not take part

  223. in God's heavenly banquet.

  224. But just as in Jesus' day,

  225. there were those who accepted

  226. the invitation

  227. and those who rejected

  228. the invitation.

  229. Even so,

  230. when the invitation is given

  231. nowadays,

  232. amongst those who hear it,

  233. some will accept it

  234. and others will reject it.

  235. But we're reminded

  236. the invitation is very great

  237. and it's an invitation

  238. to eternal life.

  239. And how wise it is

  240. to take it

  241. and to accept it

  242. right now,

  243. well, there is time.

  244. And to enter into God's banquet

  245. and to his kingdom

  246. and ultimately

  247. to have that hope

  248. and assurance

  249. of a place

  250. at God's banquet

  251. in heaven.

  252. And so with these things in mind,

  253. let's look at verse 15

  254. of our text.

  255. And this is a really key verse

  256. to our understanding

  257. of what follows.

  258. We read that

  259. one of those

  260. who reclined at table

  261. with Jesus

  262. made a comment.

  263. And the comment

  264. he made

  265. was in response

  266. to Jesus' teaching

  267. about the sort of people

  268. who are on God's guest list.

  269. And this man

  270. made a comment

  271. at the dinner

  272. and he said,

  273. blessed is he

  274. who shall eat bread

  275. in the kingdom of God.

  276. I guess we all make

  277. all kinds of comments

  278. at dinner tables

  279. and we talk

  280. about all sorts

  281. of things

  282. at home

  283. or families

  284. and we're out

  285. with friends

  286. for a meal.

  287. Sometimes there's silence

  288. at the table

  289. as is in the case

  290. when Jesus healed

  291. the ill man

  292. over in chapter 14

  293. and verses 4 and 6.

  294. But on this occasion

  295. at the meal,

  296. this particular Pharisee

  297. who also

  298. must have been

  299. an expert

  300. in the law,

  301. he made a serious comment

  302. to be sure

  303. we don't really know

  304. what the man's thoughts were

  305. but we can only guess

  306. if his words

  307. were truly genuine

  308. or whether

  309. there was a hint

  310. of hypocrisy

  311. in what he said.

  312. And so we're left

  313. with many questions.

  314. And when he said,

  315. blessed is he

  316. who shall eat bread

  317. in the kingdom of God,

  318. was he

  319. somehow presuming

  320. that one day

  321. he would make it to heaven

  322. when in fact

  323. he had no right

  324. to expect this?

  325. Was it just a sort of

  326. a pious comment

  327. by a Pharisee

  328. seeking to impress

  329. the other Pharisees

  330. and lawyers

  331. at the meal?

  332. Or was this man

  333. really genuinely

  334. longing to be present

  335. with the Lord

  336. in heaven

  337. and to partake

  338. of the heavenly banquet?

  339. We just don't know

  340. for sure.

  341. But what we do know

  342. is that Jesus

  343. told this parable

  344. in response

  345. to the man's comment.

  346. Jesus said

  347. in verses 16

  348. and 17,

  349. the man once

  350. gave a great banquet

  351. and invited many.

  352. And at the time

  353. for the banquet

  354. he sent to his servant

  355. to say to those

  356. who had been invited,

  357. come

  358. for everything

  359. is now ready.

  360. The banquet

  361. described here

  362. would have been

  363. a formal dinner,

  364. a great feast

  365. and the invitation

  366. went out.

  367. In fact,

  368. I don't know if you

  369. spotted this

  370. but there's a double

  371. invitation here,

  372. a two-part invitation.

  373. Firstly,

  374. in verse 16

  375. we read that

  376. many were invited

  377. and then in verse 17

  378. there's a command,

  379. come for all things

  380. are now ready.

  381. And when you think

  382. of this

  383. it makes perfect sense.

  384. In Jesus' day

  385. there was no such thing,

  386. certainly we're talking

  387. about a formal banquet,

  388. there's no such thing

  389. as fast food.

  390. Animals would have

  391. had to be slaughtered

  392. and roasted

  393. and so this would have

  394. taken quite a bit

  395. of time.

  396. And also it's such

  397. an obvious thing

  398. to say

  399. but people didn't

  400. have watches.

  401. So their sense of time

  402. would have been

  403. quite elastic

  404. and of course

  405. they didn't have

  406. the sort of

  407. communications networks

  408. that we have today.

  409. But can you see

  410. the two parts

  411. of the invitation here?

  412. Firstly,

  413. in verse 16

  414. the many are invited

  415. and secondly

  416. the call went out,

  417. come for all things

  418. are now ready.

  419. It was a two-part invitation.

  420. There's another

  421. really great example

  422. of this in the Old Testament.

  423. If you know your Bible well

  424. you'll remember

  425. in the book of Esther

  426. Queen Esther invited

  427. the king and Haman

  428. to a banquet

  429. and remember

  430. the banquet was announced

  431. and that was the first part

  432. of the invitation

  433. in chapter 5

  434. verse 8

  435. but it wasn't until later

  436. chapter 6

  437. verse 14

  438. when the king's servant

  439. brought Haman

  440. to the banquet.

  441. So it's the exact same thing

  442. is happening there.

  443. There's the initial call

  444. that goes out

  445. and then

  446. the second part

  447. has basically come

  448. where all things

  449. are now ready.

  450. So the master

  451. of the house

  452. gave the invitation

  453. to the servant

  454. and the servant

  455. went out

  456. to bring the people in.

  457. But the astounding thing

  458. is that despite

  459. the kindness

  460. of the master

  461. and his generosity

  462. and gracious invitation

  463. to come to

  464. such a lavish banquet

  465. there are many

  466. who declined

  467. the offer.

  468. And not only so

  469. but they did it

  470. in such

  471. an ungrateful

  472. manner.

  473. We read that

  474. they all alike

  475. with one accord

  476. made excuses

  477. and three excuses

  478. are mentioned

  479. in verses 18 to 20

  480. and we'll look at

  481. those just now.

  482. If you're taking notes

  483. the heading here

  484. is

  485. silly excuses

  486. verses 18 to 20.

  487. the first two excuses

  488. have a sort of

  489. formality

  490. attached to them

  491. request to be excused

  492. whereas the third

  493. excuse

  494. while seemingly

  495. quite plausible

  496. is just downright

  497. blunt

  498. and no hint

  499. of politeness

  500. in it at all.

  501. All three excuses

  502. are lame excuses

  503. and quite ridiculous

  504. to the point

  505. of being absurd.

  506. When you think about it

  507. no wonder

  508. that the master

  509. of the house

  510. was angry

  511. as we read

  512. in verse 21.

  513. I guess

  514. in everyday life

  515. we all have excuses

  516. for various

  517. things

  518. that we don't

  519. want to do.

  520. Maybe like me

  521. you could write a book

  522. on excuses

  523. that you've used

  524. in the past

  525. but as we look

  526. at the excuses

  527. in the parable

  528. the amazing thing

  529. is

  530. although the lifestyle

  531. and culture

  532. of the time

  533. the parable

  534. is written

  535. is vastly different

  536. from our own day.

  537. The excuses given

  538. for not taking seriously

  539. the call

  540. to faith in God

  541. are much the same.

  542. And in our text

  543. here in Luke 14

  544. clearly those

  545. mentioned

  546. considered

  547. other things

  548. more important

  549. than coming

  550. to the banquet.

  551. Now here are

  552. the excuses.

  553. Excuse number one

  554. I've bought a piece

  555. of ground

  556. and I must go

  557. and see it.

  558. And so we wonder

  559. why the man

  560. didn't go

  561. and see the land

  562. first

  563. before

  564. he bought it.

  565. Would you really

  566. buy some land

  567. without first

  568. viewing it?

  569. I think that's

  570. certainly possible

  571. but it's certainly

  572. not a wise

  573. thing to do.

  574. Excuse number two

  575. I've bought

  576. five yoke

  577. of oxen

  578. and I'm going

  579. to test them.

  580. and he was

  581. actually on

  582. his way

  583. to test

  584. the oxen

  585. and again

  586. beggars belief

  587. why the man

  588. would not have

  589. tested the oxen

  590. first

  591. for their usefulness

  592. before he brought

  593. the animals.

  594. How foolish

  595. or maybe

  596. just how ridiculous.

  597. And so you get

  598. the impression

  599. that the man

  600. was speaking

  601. as he was walking.

  602. I don't know

  603. if he would even

  604. have stopped

  605. for a moment

  606. to speak

  607. to the servant

  608. out of courtesy.

  609. He made his

  610. excuse

  611. and he was off.

  612. He was going.

  613. And then excuse

  614. number three

  615. I've married a wife

  616. and therefore

  617. I cannot come.

  618. And this excuse

  619. is really the most

  620. blunt of the three.

  621. It's abrupt

  622. and the man

  623. doesn't even

  624. say please

  625. can you have me

  626. excused.

  627. He just

  628. rejects the invitation

  629. outright.

  630. That said

  631. at first glance

  632. this excuse

  633. might seem

  634. to be plausible

  635. at least

  636. on the basis

  637. of the Old Testament.

  638. If you know

  639. your Bible well

  640. you remember

  641. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 24:5

  642. 24

  643. verse 5

  644. a man

  645. who just got

  646. married

  647. was exempt

  648. from military

  649. service for a year

  650. and also

  651. from other

  652. certain responsibilities

  653. in business.

  654. But even so

  655. the excuse

  656. is quite ridiculous

  657. and the banquet

  658. has nothing

  659. to do with

  660. military service

  661. and in any case

  662. the man's wife

  663. would have been

  664. most welcome

  665. to come to the banquet

  666. as well.

  667. And so there are

  668. three silly

  669. excuses here.

  670. But what about

  671. here and now

  672. today?

  673. I preached on

  674. this passage

  675. in Peebles

  676. a few months ago

  677. and in such

  678. a rural

  679. and farming

  680. community

  681. I guess

  682. there may have

  683. been some

  684. people

  685. in the church

  686. who would be

  687. in the business

  688. of buying land

  689. and buying animals

  690. but I expect

  691. for us here

  692. today

  693. in the big city

  694. as none of us

  695. will be

  696. I think

  697. anyway

  698. going out

  699. to buy land

  700. or five yoke

  701. of oxen

  702. tomorrow morning.

  703. But in fact

  704. regardless

  705. of our culture

  706. or location

  707. people have

  708. many many excuses

  709. for not accepting

  710. God's invitation

  711. and the excuses

  712. are essentially

  713. the same

  714. as the ones

  715. we just read about

  716. although the culture

  717. of the day

  718. was very different

  719. from ours

  720. and none of those

  721. excuses

  722. that were made

  723. or can ever

  724. be made

  725. are valid.

  726. There are many

  727. things that are

  728. important in life

  729. our families

  730. our friends

  731. our employment

  732. our homes

  733. our families

  734. are very dear

  735. to us in fact

  736. and other things

  737. are necessary

  738. our work

  739. and a home

  740. to live in

  741. but there's nothing

  742. more important

  743. in all the world

  744. than how we respond

  745. to God's invitation

  746. and you can accept

  747. it or you can

  748. reject it

  749. but by putting

  750. it off

  751. till another time

  752. because you're

  753. too busy

  754. or now's

  755. not a convenient

  756. time

  757. it's just the same

  758. as rejecting it

  759. and rejecting

  760. the invitation

  761. comes with

  762. consequences

  763. as we'll see

  764. in a moment

  765. in the following

  766. verses

  767. but my first point

  768. was to

  769. draw your attention

  770. to the silly

  771. excuses

  772. of the parable

  773. and now

  774. in verses

  775. 22 and 23

  776. we're looking

  777. at surprises

  778. and we see

  779. that the master

  780. of the house

  781. is angry

  782. because the

  783. excuse is given

  784. by those who

  785. rejected his

  786. kind invitation

  787. and no wonder

  788. and so he sends

  789. the servant

  790. out again

  791. this time

  792. in great haste

  793. and you can

  794. almost imagine

  795. the servant

  796. being driven out

  797. by his master

  798. into the city

  799. and after all

  800. the banquet

  801. was ready

  802. and there was

  803. no time

  804. to lose

  805. time was short

  806. and there was

  807. a certain

  808. urgency

  809. about the matter

  810. and he says

  811. go out quickly

  812. but here the

  813. surprising thing

  814. is that he

  815. didn't say

  816. go out quickly

  817. to the rich

  818. and to the

  819. important people

  820. to the people

  821. of high standing

  822. and the wealthy

  823. influential

  824. but he says

  825. bring in the poor

  826. and the maimed

  827. and the lame

  828. and the blind

  829. and how interesting

  830. that is

  831. those who

  832. in effect

  833. had nothing

  834. at all

  835. to give in return

  836. were invited

  837. but we need to be

  838. careful here as well

  839. not misunderstand

  840. what's being said

  841. remember there's a

  842. heavenly meaning

  843. in the parable

  844. and so the poverty

  845. and the blindness

  846. spoken of here

  847. doesn't refer

  848. to physical

  849. disability

  850. but rather

  851. to spiritual

  852. condition

  853. in other words

  854. those who are

  855. spiritually blind

  856. those who are

  857. poor in spirit

  858. those who are

  859. crippled spiritually

  860. and unable

  861. to straighten

  862. themselves up

  863. again

  864. and so the servant

  865. goes out

  866. at the master's

  867. command

  868. into the streets

  869. and lanes

  870. of the city

  871. and yet

  872. there was still

  873. room

  874. and so the master

  875. sends them out

  876. again

  877. this time

  878. to the highways

  879. and hedges

  880. with the command

  881. compel them

  882. to come in

  883. the streets

  884. and lanes

  885. probably refer

  886. to cities

  887. and towns

  888. whereas the highways

  889. and hedges

  890. the rural areas

  891. the countryside

  892. areas

  893. and we can see

  894. here clearly

  895. I think that the gospel

  896. is to go out

  897. to all people

  898. in every place

  899. the gospel

  900. is to be preached

  901. everywhere

  902. to all nations

  903. in fact

  904. in the cities

  905. and in the streets

  906. and lanes

  907. in the countryside

  908. everywhere

  909. and people

  910. are to be compelled

  911. to come in

  912. how are we going

  913. to compel people

  914. to come in

  915. we're not going

  916. to use force

  917. and certainly

  918. we're not going

  919. to use the sword

  920. or persecution

  921. but a genuine

  922. concern

  923. and courtesy

  924. and love

  925. were to compel

  926. them to come in

  927. but that's not

  928. the end of the story

  929. point number one

  930. was that there were

  931. silly excuses

  932. point number two

  933. there were surprises

  934. and my final point

  935. number three

  936. there is still room

  937. verse 22 says

  938. master it is done

  939. as you commanded

  940. and still there is room

  941. there is still room

  942. there is a great banquet

  943. and you are invited

  944. to come

  945. and there are still

  946. spaces at the table

  947. and that's the good news

  948. the Lord says come

  949. for all things

  950. are now ready

  951. there is so much

  952. more that could be said

  953. about this parable

  954. but for now

  955. it's time to draw

  956. things to a close

  957. and just very

  958. brief thoughts

  959. by way of conclusion

  960. three brief thoughts

  961. there is an invitation

  962. to be accepted

  963. and there is a warning

  964. here as well

  965. to be heeded

  966. and there is a mission

  967. to be accomplished

  968. first of all

  969. there is an invitation

  970. to be accepted

  971. and that's very clear

  972. I think from this passage

  973. this evening

  974. wouldn't it be great

  975. if someone here

  976. or if you listen

  977. to a recording of this

  978. wouldn't it be great

  979. if someone accepted

  980. God's invitation

  981. to come

  982. maybe you don't feel

  983. very good

  984. or worthy to come

  985. maybe you don't feel

  986. very religious

  987. all I can say

  988. is the invitation

  989. is addressed to you

  990. personally

  991. and maybe the concerns

  992. of life

  993. have taken first place

  994. in your life

  995. and maybe over many years

  996. in fact

  997. your career

  998. and your job

  999. your professional development

  1000. your home

  1001. and family

1002. and a hundred other things

1003. have got in the way

  1004. your business of life

  1005. and all the things

1006. that you need to do

1007. or you want to do

  1008. you're so busy

  1009. that you don't have

  1010. time for God

  1011. maybe the Lord

  1012. is saying to you

  1013. this evening

  1014. now is the time

1015. to put first things first

  1016. and no excuses

  1017. there are other things

  1018. of course

  1019. that are really important

  1020. in life

  1021. but this

  1022. takes a priority

1023. this is the first thing

1024. and this is the most

  1025. important thing

  1026. maybe you don't feel

  1027. worthy enough

1028. to come to the Lord

  1029. well

  1030. all I can say

  1031. is that this parable

  1032. is for you

  1033. who did the master

  1034. of the house

  1035. invite

  1036. those who are

  1037. spiritually poor

  1038. and maimed

  1039. and blind

  1040. those are the ones

  1041. who are welcomed

  1042. with open arms

  1043. to come

  1044. to the banquet

  1045. there's a

  1046. kindness

  1047. and a graciousness

  1048. in this invitation

  1049. that he would invite

  1050. people like us

  1051. to come

  1052. to the great banquet

  1053. to come

  1054. into his kingdom

1055. and that's the good news

  1056. you see

  1057. secondly here

  1058. there's a warning

  1059. to be heeded

  1060. a warning

  1061. to the religious

  1062. and that might seem

  1063. like a

  1064. quite a strange

  1065. thing to say

  1066. but remember

  1067. when Jesus spoke

1068. the words of this parable

1069. who was he speaking to

  1070. he was speaking to

  1071. people who were

  1072. very very

  1073. very religious

  1074. there were people

  1075. who were

  1076. known to be

  1077. very religious

  1078. and outstandingly

  1079. so in fact

  1080. they were Pharisees

  1081. the people

  1082. looked up to them

  1083. as religious people

1084. but we have the benefit

  1085. of hindsight

  1086. today

1087. and we have the whole

  1088. Bible

  1089. in our hands

  1090. and we know

  1091. that on the part

  1092. of the Jews

  1093. there was a rejection

  1094. of the gospel

  1095. they were the ones

  1096. who first were invited

  1097. and they rejected

  1098. the invitation

  1099. and then what happened

  1100. next

  1101. they were cut off

  1102. for a season

  1103. and you can read

  1104. all about that

1105. in the book of Romans

  1106. particularly

  1107. from 9 onwards

  1108. chapter 11

  1109. as well

  1110. and so the invitation

  1111. has gone out

  1112. to the Gentiles

  1113. first

  1114. the invitation

  1115. has gone out

  1116. to the prophets

  1117. now in Jesus

  1118. the second invitation

  1119. is given

  1120. the religious elite

  1121. the Jews

  1122. rejected

  1123. the invitation

  1124. now the gospel

  1125. has gone out

  1126. to the Gentiles

  1127. there's some deep

  1128. theology

  1129. in these things

1130. and it's good for us

  1131. to think about it

  1132. and to ponder

  1133. God's plan

  1134. and his amazing ways

  1135. what does this mean

  1136. for us here today

  1137. here and now

  1138. of course it's not

1139. a bad thing per se

  1140. to be religious

  1141. but the fact is

  1142. it's possible to be

  1143. very very religious

1144. and yet not to be

1145. on the road to heaven

  1146. and that's just a plain fact

  1147. and read about that

  1148. through the Bible

  1149. and through the history

  1150. of the church

  1151. there's so many examples

  1152. of that

  1153. the Pharisee

  1154. who was sitting

  1155. at the table

  1156. with Jesus

  1157. of all people

  1158. could have sung

  1159. the words of that

  1160. really old hymn

  1161. that we very occasionally

  1162. rarely sing these days

  1163. when the trumpet

  1164. of the Lord

  1165. shall sound

  1166. when the roll

  1167. is called up

  1168. beyonder

  1169. I'll be there

  1170. but did he really

  1171. make it to heaven

  1172. we don't know that

  1173. and

  1174. you can see

  1175. he can be very

  1176. very religious

  1177. and yet not

1178. on the road to heaven

  1179. what can we do

  1180. about this

1181. or what can be done

  1182. about this

  1183. well I believe

  1184. the first thing

  1185. is this

  1186. to take heed

  1187. to the warning

  1188. here in this parable

  1189. and secondly

  1190. to pray

  1191. and to ask

  1192. for God's help

1193. that we may be assured

  1194. that we are

  1195. really trusting

  1196. in Jesus

  1197. not in anything else

1198. not in our good works

1199. not in who we are

  1200. the good things

  1201. that we have done

  1202. we are trusting

  1203. in Jesus alone

  1204. for salvation

  1205. and how important

  1206. this is

  1207. to

  1208. take such great care

  1209. if we find ourselves

  1210. drifting or wavering

  1211. in our faith

  1212. I was thinking

  1213. of an illustration

  1214. of this

1215. and a few months ago

  1216. I remember

  1217. there was that story

  1218. in the news

  1219. and there was

  1220. a P&O ferry

  1221. that

  1222. had gone adrift

  1223. it was

  1224. I think

  1225. going from

  1226. Cairn Ryan

  1227. over to Larn

  1228. and it lost

  1229. all power

  1230. in the engines

  1231. and here's this ferry

  1232. sort of drifting

  1233. drifting along

  1234. I thought

  1235. how good

  1236. an illustration

  1237. is that

  1238. is that

  1239. anyway like us

  1240. as Christians

  1241. at the time

  1242. we're sort of

  1243. drifting

  1244. an action

  1245. needs to be

  1246. taken

  1247. just supposing

  1248. the

  1249. captain

  1250. of that vessel

  1251. had said

  1252. to the first mate

  1253. on the boat

  1254. you know

  1255. we've lost

  1256. all power

  1257. in the engines

  1258. but not to worry

  1259. we'll just

  1260. we'll drift along

  1261. and a few hours

  1262. we'll drift

  1263. into Larn

  1264. everything

  1265. will be okay

  1266. well I think

  1267. you know

  1268. if the first mate

  1269. was

  1270. in any way

  1271. good at his job

  1272. he wouldn't be

  1273. too happy

  1274. with that

  1275. he'd be

  1276. saying

  1277. no no

  1278. we need

  1279. we need

  1280. to

  1281. put the

  1282. maide signal

  1283. out

  1284. we need

  1285. to get

  1286. the

  1287. we need

  1288. help

  1289. and of course

  1290. there was a

  1291. good outcome

  1292. to that

  1293. story

  1294. and you remember

  1295. that

  1296. after about

  1297. an hour

  1298. adrift

  1299. in the Irish

  1300. sea

  1301. ferry

  1302. got in

  1303. tow

  1304. tugboats

  1305. were sent

  1306. out

  1307. from

  1308. Belfast

  1309. and so

  1310. there was

  1311. a good

  1312. ending

  1313. and the

  1314. boat

  1315. got safely

  1316. into

  1317. the dock

  1318. but if

  1319. we're

  1320. in our

  1321. Christian

  1322. faith

  1323. if we're

  1324. drifting

  1325. if we're

  1326. wavering

  1327. if we're

  1328. not the

  1329. Christians

  1330. we used

  1331. to be

  1332. we're

  1333. going

  1334. back

  1335. instead

  1336. of going

  1337. forward

  1338. take heed

  1339. to the

  1340. warning

  1341. is what

  1342. this parable

  1343. says

  1344. don't go

  1345. on drifting

  1346. at the

  1347. end

  1348. you know

  1349. just like

  1350. the boat

  1351. you could

  1352. be dashed

  1353. on the

  1354. rocks

  1355. to use

  1356. the

  1357. illustration

  1358. but take

  1359. action

  1360. take the

  1361. warning

  1362. and pray

  1363. to God

  1364. for help

  1365. there's an

  1366. invitation

  1367. to be

  1368. accepted

  1369. there's a

  1370. warning

  1371. to be

  1372. heeded

  1373. and thirdly

  1374. and finally

  1375. there's a

  1376. mission

  1377. to be

  1378. accomplished

  1379. the man

  1380. at the

  1381. table

  1382. with

  1383. Jesus

  1384. said

  1385. blessed

  1386. is

  1387. everyone

  1388. who

  1389. will

  1390. eat

  1391. bread

  1392. in the

  1393. kingdom

  1394. of

  1395. God

  1396. let's

  1397. just

  1398. suppose

  1399. for a

  1400. minute

  1401. that

  1402. this

  1403. man

  1404. spoke

  1405. these

  1406. words

  1407. and he

  1408. spoke

  1409. them

  1410. really

  1411. genuinely

  1412. and let's

  1413. just suppose

  1414. for a

  1415. moment

  1416. and this

  1417. actually may

  1418. have been

  1419. the case

  1420. that the

  1421. man was

  1422. genuine

  1423. and like

  1424. so many

  1425. other of

  1426. the Pharisees

  1427. and his

  1428. expression

  1429. was a

  1430. real expression

  1431. of faith

  1432. in the

  1433. Lord

  1434. and he

  1435. had every

  1436. right to

  1437. say this

  1438. because he

  1439. was trusting

  1440. in the

  1441. Lord

  1442. and he

  1443. was actually

  1444. on the road

  1445. to heaven

  1446. and he

  1447. would eat

  1448. bread in

  1449. the kingdom

  1450. of God

  1451. and this

  1452. evening I'm

  1453. speaking

  1454. of every

  1455. reason to

  1456. believe to

  1457. genuine

  1458. Christians

  1459. and those

  1460. of you

  1461. here this

  1462. evening who

  1463. I know

  1464. and as a

  1465. matter of

  1466. fact some

  1467. of the

  1468. most

  1469. sincere and

  1470. outstanding

  1471. Christians I've

  1472. ever known

  1473. have been

  1474. members of

  1475. this church

  1476. some

  1477. are now

  1478. with the

  1479. Lord

  1480. but

  1481. I just

  1482. want to

  1483. encourage you

  1484. this evening

  1485. if you're

  1486. on the

  1487. road if

  1488. you're trusting

  1489. in the

  1490. Lord and

  1491. going on

  1492. with him

  1493. that there's

  1494. a lot of

  1495. encouragement

  1496. here in

  1497. this parable

  1498. for you

  1499. as a

  1500. reminder that

  1501. there's a

  1502. mission to

  1503. be accomplished

  1504. those who

  1505. have never

  1506. heard the

  1507. invitation might

  1508. hear it

  1509. and the

  1510. great commission

  1511. of course

  1512. still stands

  1513. and people

  1514. need to hear

  1515. the life

  1516. changing message

  1517. of the gospel

  1518. and we're

  1519. facing a

  1520. task

  1521. unfinished

  1522. the great

  1523. commission

  1524. still stands

  1525. go therefore

  1526. and make

  1527. disciples of

  1528. all nations

  1529. baptizing them

  1530. in the name

  1531. of the

  1532. father and

  1533. of the

  1534. son and

  1535. of the

  1536. holy

  1537. spirit

  1538. teaching

  1539. them to

  1540. observe

  1541. all that

  1542. I've

  1543. commanded

  1544. you and

  1545. behold I

  1546. am with

  1547. you always

  1548. to the

  1549. end of

  1550. the age

  1551. what does

  1552. that mean

  1553. for us

  1554. well I

  1555. quoted an

  1556. old hymn a

  1557. few moments

  1558. ago and

  1559. here's another

  1560. verse from

  1561. that hymn

  1562. when the

  1563. trumpet of

  1564. the lord

  1565. shall sound

  1566. the words

  1567. are archaic

  1568. I know but

  1569. the sentiment

  1570. of this hymn

  1571. is absolutely

  1572. spot on

  1573. let me

  1574. labor for

  1575. the master

  1576. from the

  1577. dawn till

  1578. setting sun

  1579. let me talk

  1580. of all his

  1581. wondrous love

  1582. and care

  1583. then when

  1584. all of

  1585. life is

  1586. over and

  1587. my work

  1588. on earth

  1589. is done

  1590. and the

  1591. role is

  1592. called up

  1593. yonder

  1594. I'll be

  1595. there

  1596. do you

  1597. get it

  1598. it's old

  1599. language but

  1600. it's absolutely

  1601. right

  1602. let us

  1603. labor

  1604. for the

  1605. master

  1606. let's go

  1607. on trusting

  1608. in the

  1609. lord and

  1610. doing what

  1611. we can

  1612. in his

  1613. service

  1614. there may

  1615. be only

  1616. so much

  1617. that we

  1618. can do

  1619. in our

  1620. own life

  1621. situations

  1622. or our

  1623. sphere of

  1624. influence

  1625. but we

  1626. can pray

  1627. and we

  1628. can do

  1629. what we

  1630. can and

  1631. surely the

  1632. lord will

  1633. bless it

  1634. I'd like to

  1635. finish just

  1636. with a

  1637. very short

  1638. prayer

  1639. maybe you've

  1640. heard a

  1641. sermon like

  1642. this and

  1643. it's such a

  1644. clear gospel

  1645. sermon

  1646. such a

  1647. clear invitation

  1648. I don't

  1649. know if

  1650. anyone here

  1651. this evening

  1652. may want to

  1653. respond to

  1654. the teaching

  1655. of this

  1656. parable

  1657. the bible

  1658. that we

  1659. have read

  1660. respond to

  1661. the lord

  1662. and trust

  1663. in him

  1664. I'm going

  1665. to just

  1666. pray this

  1667. short prayer

  1668. and if you

  1669. can use some

  1670. of the words

  1671. in this

  1672. prayer that's

  1673. great

  1674. it's not

  1675. a sort

  1676. of a

  1677. magic

  1678. formula

  1679. if you

  1680. pray this

  1681. prayer then

  1682. you're a

  1683. Christian

  1684. certainly not

  1685. saying that

  1686. in any way

  1687. at all

  1688. but if you

  1689. can take

  1690. the sentiment

  1691. of the

  1692. words expressed

  1693. here

  1694. then our

  1695. heart's desire

  1696. in prayer is

  1697. that you

  1698. would come

  1699. to know

  1700. the lord

  1701. and put

  1702. your faith

  1703. and trust

  1704. in him

  1705. so let's

  1706. pray together

  1707. I'll just

  1708. pray this

  1709. very very

  1710. short

  1711. prayer

  1712. and if

  1713. you can

  1714. use it

  1715. then please

  1716. do take

  1717. it

  1718. and use

  1719. it

  1720. lord

  1721. jesus

  1722. christ

  1723. i admit

  1724. that i'm

  1725. weaker

  1726. and more

  1727. sinful

  1728. than i

  1729. ever before

  1730. believed

  1731. but through

  1732. you i'm

  1733. more loved

  1734. and accepted

  1735. than i ever

  1736. dare to

  1737. hope

  1738. i thank you

  1739. for paying

  1740. my debt

  1741. for bearing

  1742. my punishment

  1743. for offering

  1744. me forgiveness

  1745. for inviting

  1746. me to your

  1747. feast

  1748. and i turn

  1749. from my

  1750. sin

  1751. and receive

  1752. you as

  1753. my savior

  1754. amen
