  1. We've obviously got quite a lot to get through this evening.

  2. It would be great as ever if you keep that open in front of you.

  3. We're going to spend a lot of time in bits of it,

  4. scoot over other bits,

  5. but hopefully we'll get to the end in not too long.

  6. Let me pray.

  7. We all need God's help this evening.

  8. Heavenly Father,

  9. I pray that you would give us eyes to see,

  10. ears to hear,

  11. the truth of your promise in your word this evening.

  12. Help us, each of us, to trust in you,

  13. to have faith in you.

  14. Be with us by your Holy Spirit, we pray.

  15. In Jesus' name.

  16. Amen.

  17. And last week, we began by imagining ourselves,

  18. if you remember, in the English Channel.

  19. It was 1939.

  20. 1939, we were on our way to war in France,

  21. but there was a big storm.

  22. We were in a small boat.

  23. There was a big storm.

  24. And really, that was just a picture of the mess,

  25. a picture of the mess of life,

  26. the mess of the world around us,

  27. and being really honest with ourselves,

  28. the mess of our own lives,

  29. the mess in our own hearts.

  30. And this week, I want you to imagine,

  31. I guess, quite a similar picture.

  32. It's six years on, still World War II, 1945.

  33. It's D-Day.

  34. This time, your crossing to France was relatively smooth,

  35. but now, you can imagine yourself,

  36. you've come off the boat,

  37. and you're wading through the sort of waist-deep sea.

  38. The waves are starting to feel more intense,

  39. but that is nothing compared to the gunfire all around you,

  40. the shells dropping,

  41. the whistles,

  42. the screams.

  43. It's a mess.

  44. Last week, as we thought about the mess of the storm

  45. in our little boat

  46. on that very first crossing to France,

  47. well, if we're honest,

  48. the truth is that in life,

  49. mess is not reduced to a single moment.

  50. Life just seems to get messier all the time, doesn't it?

  51. Injustice gets sharper.

  52. Trauma gets increasingly painful.

  53. And on this side of the cross,

  54. we continue to ask,

  55. where is God in all of this mess?

  56. How are we supposed to have faith in the mess?

  57. Just a reminder of where we were last week

  58. in terms of the history of Habakkuk.

  59. Habakkuk is a prophet in the southern kingdom of Judah.

  60. The northern kingdom, Israel,

  61. has been conquered 100 years before.

  62. They've been carried off into exile.

  63. And in the south,

  64. things have been getting increasingly evil.

  65. For that 100 years,

  66. bad king after bad king.

  67. Habakkuk probably experienced something of a revival

  68. under the good king, Josiah.

  69. But now,

  70. under Josiah's son,

  71. Jehoiakim,

  72. there is a return to evil days.

  73. And so last week,

  74. in that context,

  75. Habakkuk cried out to God.

  76. He was, if you like,

  77. a faithful prophet

  78. in amongst the mess all around him.

  79. And he cries out,

  80. knowing God to be a God of justice,

  81. he cries out a super honest question.

  82. How long?

  83. How long until you come and do something

  84. about the injustice

  85. that is going on amongst your people, God?

  86. And we saw last week

  87. that God responded with this promise

  88. of surprising justice.

  89. God said,

  90. I'm going to raise up the Babylonians

  91. to bring that justice.

  92. The Babylonians,

  93. the violent and evil empire next door.

  94. Which obviously begs the question,

  95. and we'll see this evening,

  96. the question that Habakkuk asks,

  97. how can you let the guilty people of Babylon

  98. get away with the judgment of your people?

  99. Last week,

  100. we thought about the surprising justice

  101. of the cross,

  102. where the victory,

  103. the victory over sin and death

  104. really was won.

  105. And yet,

  106. living on this side of the cross,

  107. we still ask that question,

  108. don't we?

  109. What are you going to do

  110. about all the guilty people?

  111. It's now a week or so after D-Day.

  112. The war on the beaches was won,

  113. but it definitely isn't over.

  114. In fact,

  115. you're still fighting battles.

  116. Some of your friends

  117. probably won't make it.

  118. It's definitely still a mess.

  119. The world sometimes feels

  120. a bit like that,

  121. I think.

  122. For the Christian,

  123. we know,

  124. we're so often told,

  125. aren't we,

  126. Jesus is victorious.

  127. The victory is won.

  128. Justice has been achieved.

  129. If you're here this evening

  130. and you don't know Jesus,

  131. that is the message.

  132. Jesus is the one

  133. who brings justice.

  134. That his death on the cross

  135. is what did it,

  136. where he defeated evil,

  137. where he cried,

  138. it is finished.

  139. He rose again.

  140. He defeated death.

  141. That's the message.

  142. It's the big justice moment.

  143. And yet we look around today,

  144. 2,000 years later,

  145. and the world is still a mess.

  146. We thought last week

  147. about how we contribute

  148. to that mess.

  149. About how faith in Jesus,

  150. faith in that big justice moment,

  151. is so important for us.

  152. Because it was a just God

  153. making a way

  154. to justify his people,

  155. like we read in Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  156. just now.

  157. Clothing them

  158. in his righteousness,

  159. removing their guilt,

  160. those who have faith in him.

  161. But really,

  162. that's got to just be a start.

  163. Because ultimately,

  164. just like Habakkuk,

  165. on this side of that problem,

  166. on this side of that promise,

  167. sorry,

  168. we are left with questions.

  169. And so again,

  170. this week,

  171. we're going to ask them

  172. with Habakkuk,

  173. we're going to ask

  174. an honest question.

  175. And this time,

  176. we will see the promise.

  177. The promise from God

  178. is of complete justice.

  179. Let's begin.

  180. Let's begin with this honest question.

  181. Habakkuk begins,

  182. a bit like last week,

  183. actually,

  184. with an acknowledgement

  185. of who God is.

  186. You see in verse 12,

  187. have a look at verse 12

  188. in your Bible.

  189. Lord,

  190. are you not

  191. from everlasting?

  192. My God,

  193. my Holy One,

  194. you will never die.

  195. See the titles

  196. that Habakkuk uses

  197. to address God here.

  198. Again,

  199. he uses Lord

  200. in capital letters

  201. like that.

  202. We saw last week

  203. that's Yahweh.

  204. It's the word used

  205. to speak specifically

  206. of the God of Israel.

  207. It's the name

  208. that God revealed

  209. to Moses.

  210. It really just essentially

  211. means the one

  212. who was,

  213. who is,

  214. and who forever will be.

  215. And so comes

  216. the appropriate question

  217. of verse 12,

  218. are you not

  219. from everlasting?

  220. It's who you've told us

  221. you are.

  222. This is who you are.

  223. And you are

  224. my Holy One.

  225. My Holy One.

  226. Habakkuk actually does

  227. something incredibly

  228. profound here.

  229. Because not only

  230. does he describe

  231. God as holy,

  232. which is to say

  233. so utterly perfect

  234. that he is

  235. quite unlike

  236. anything in the

  237. created world.

  238. In fact,

  239. his holiness

  240. is so complete

  241. that to be unholy

  242. in his presence

  243. is impossible.

  244. And yet,

  245. he is mine,

  246. Habakkuk says.

  247. It is incredibly

  248. profound

  249. that the God

  250. of Israel

  251. is both holy

  252. and personal

  253. to his people.

  254. And it is because

  255. of that,

  256. that Habakkuk

  257. can confidently say,

  258. still in verse 12,

  259. actually the translation

  260. in the NIV

  261. I don't think

  262. is as good here.

  263. You might have a footnote,

  264. but in the ESV

  265. it's we will,

  266. we will never die.

  267. Habakkuk's theology

  268. is really good.

  269. He knows who God is,

  270. that he is eternal

  271. and holy.

  272. But he also knows

  273. that those who are his

  274. will live forever

  275. with him.

  276. His theology

  277. is really good.

  278. And not only

  279. does he know God,

  280. he also accepts

  281. that God's

  282. surprising promise

  283. of justice

  284. that we heard

  285. last week

  286. in chapter 1

  287. is true.

  288. He says,

  289. You, Lord,

  290. have appointed them

  291. to execute judgment.

  292. You, my rock,

  293. have ordained them

  294. to punish.

  295. Using that other title

  296. for God,

  297. my rock,

  298. in other words,

  299. the place I go

  300. to seek refuge.

  301. You send the Babylonians

  302. to do justice

  303. in this place

  304. and I will flee

  305. to you,

  306. my strong foundation.

  307. He knows

  308. who this God is

  309. and he accepts

  310. that this is what

  311. he said he'll do.

  312. This is what faith

  313. looks like

  314. in the mess.

  315. He's trusting

  316. that D-Day

  317. really was

  318. the victory.

  319. And as we keep reading,

  320. Habakkuk continues

  321. to illustrate

  322. really good theology.

  323. See, in verse 13,

  324. he knows what God

  325. is like.

  326. Your eyes

  327. are too pure

  328. to look on evil.

  329. You cannot tolerate

  330. wrongdoing.

  331. He's just saying

  332. you are so holy.

  333. And so he asks

  334. his honest question.

  335. Why then

  336. do you tolerate

  337. the treacherous?

  338. Why are you silent

  339. while the wicked

  340. swallow up those

  341. more righteous

  342. than themselves?

  343. Got to say

  344. that's a good question,

  345. isn't it?

  346. It's really the question

  347. we were left with

  348. last week.

  349. As God says

  350. he's going to raise up

  351. the Babylonians

  352. to bring his justice.

  353. But then

  354. in verse 11

  355. he describes them

  356. as guilty.

  357. In chapter 1,

  358. verse 11,

  359. the Babylonians

  360. are guilty.

  361. If God is too pure

  362. to look on evil,

  363. if he cannot tolerate

  364. wrongdoing,

  365. how can he possibly

  366. allow them

  367. to get away with it?

  368. Aren't we asking

  369. that question?

  370. Don't we ask it today?

  371. And if we stick

  372. with the World War II

  373. theme,

  374. it's true that

  375. Joseph Stalin

  376. died in his own bed,

  377. the man responsible

  378. for more deaths

  379. in the deadliest century

  380. in human history

  381. than any other,

  382. and he died

  383. in his own bed,

  384. comfortable,

  385. at home.

  386. He never faced

  387. the justice

  388. of a human court.

  389. How can we say

  390. that the cross

  391. brings justice?

  392. How could God

  393. possibly have allowed

  394. him to get away

  395. with it?

  396. Maybe that's a question

  397. that you have.

  398. I think it's really

  399. got to be a question

  400. that we're all asking.

  401. How can this God,

  402. knowing what this God

  403. is like,

  404. how can he possibly

  405. allow such evil?

  406. I guess for some

  407. of us in the room,

  408. this might be a really

  409. deeply personal question.

  410. If you've been

  411. betrayed or abused

  412. or wronged,

  413. if you've faced

  414. significant discrimination,

  415. if you've just

  416. experienced the sharp

  417. end of the messy

  418. world that we live in,

  419. I am sure you're

  420. asking this question

  421. with Habakkuk,

  422. how can they

  423. possibly have been

  424. allowed to get away

  425. with it?

  426. I'm not going to

  427. promise that you'll

  428. come away this evening

  429. with an absolutely

  430. satisfying answer

  431. to that question,

  432. but stay tuned

  433. because there is

  434. hope,

  435. there is comfort.

  436. Before we get there,

  437. see in verse 14,

  438. Habakkuk begins to

  439. lay out the charge

  440. against Babylon.

  441. Here he's actually

  442. speaking of the nations

  443. that Babylon are going

  444. to conquer.

  445. You have made the people

  446. or you have made mankind

  447. like the fish in the sea,

  448. like the sea creatures

  449. that have no ruler.

  450. I think maybe especially

  451. he's thinking of his own

  452. nation,

  453. Judah,

  454. with such a useless

  455. and evil king at home.

  456. It's as though the people

  457. have no ruler at all.

  458. Their wickedness,

  459. their violence

  460. are left to run wild.

  461. And then in verse 15,

  462. Habakkuk says,

  463. this is what the

  464. Babylonians are like.

  465. It's just as you say,

  466. God,

  467. this is what's coming.

  468. If we are the fish,

  469. then they come with

  470. their hooks

  471. and their nets

  472. and their dragnets

  473. to carry us off

  474. into exile.

  475. Just like we've seen

  476. happen to our brothers

  477. in the north.

  478. It's a stark image.

  479. It's also a real image.

  480. There are actually

  481. drawings of the

  482. Babylonian empire

  483. carrying off

  484. captives

  485. in nets

  486. like fishing nets

  487. and dragging people

  488. with hooks

  489. through their noses

  490. and their cheeks.

  491. These really are

  492. their tools of war.

  493. And here's the issue

  494. for Habakkuk

  495. in verse 16.

  496. Therefore,

  497. he sacrifices

  498. to his net

  499. and burns incense

  500. to his dragnet.

  501. These people

  502. that you are raising up,

  503. God,

  504. they want nothing

  505. to do with you.

  506. In fact,

  507. they'd rather worship

  508. their tools of war.

  509. They turn their

  510. military power

  511. into their gods.

  512. And in doing so,

  513. in the rest of verse 16,

  514. they're able to live

  515. in luxury.

  516. They're able to enjoy

  517. the choicest food.

  518. They are utterly evil

  519. and yet materially

  520. prosperous.

  521. I think it's worth

  522. pausing for a second here

  523. and just looking

  524. in the mirror together.

  525. Confessing that

  526. despite the prosperous

  527. years that our nation

  528. may have enjoyed

  529. and experienced,

  530. there are ways

  531. that we have

  532. contributed

  533. and continue

  534. to contribute

  535. to injustice

  536. in this world.

  537. And even more

  538. than nationally,

  539. more just individually

  540. in our relative

  541. prosperity,

  542. even as we think

  543. about the places

  544. where we buy things

  545. from,

  546. we've got to ask,

  547. are the producers,

  548. the farmers,

  549. the creatives,

  550. are they getting paid

  551. fairly for the goods

  552. that we use?

  553. Are the people

  554. making our clothes

  555. being treated

  556. with justice?

  557. As we look in the mirror,

  558. as we ask these questions,

  559. I think it just becomes

  560. increasingly obvious,

  561. doesn't it?

  562. Doesn't it become

  563. increasingly obvious

  564. that there are ways

  565. that we contribute

  566. to the injustice

  567. of this world,

  568. maybe even without

  569. thinking about it?

  570. But also,

  571. as like Habakkuk,

  572. we look out of the window,

  573. again,

  574. this ought to be

  575. a question

  576. that we have today,

  577. the injustice

  578. in the world.

  579. I'm sure that as he

  580. rests his head

  581. on his pillow tonight,

  582. Vladimir Putin

  583. will have the nicest

  584. silk sheets,

  585. the very best pillow.

  586. It remains true

  587. that those who seem

  588. to cause the most

  589. injustice in this world

  590. are also very often

  591. those living

  592. the most luxurious lives.

  593. And so we ask,

  594. along with Habakkuk

  595. in verse 17,

  596. is he,

  597. is the Babylonian

  598. to keep on emptying

  599. his net

  600. and destroying

  601. nations without mercy?

  602. That's the question,

  603. isn't it?

  604. It's very similar

  605. to the question

  606. of chapter one.

  607. How long

  608. are you going to

  609. let this persist?

  610. In chapter one,

  611. it was how long

  612. will you let

  613. the injustice

  614. at home persist?

  615. And now the question

  616. becomes universal.

  617. How long

  618. are you going to let

  619. injustice

  620. in this world

  621. continue?

  622. And so with Habakkuk

  623. in verse one

  624. of chapter two,

  625. I will stand

  626. at my watch

  627. and station myself

  628. on the ramparts.

  629. I will look

  630. to see what he

  631. will say to me

  632. and what answer

  633. I am to give

  634. to this complaint.

  635. In other words,

  636. I will wait.

  637. I've offered

  638. my honest question

  639. and now

  640. I will wait.

  641. Imagine again

  642. being in the army,

  643. D-Day has happened

  644. and every day,

  645. what are you doing?

  646. You're waiting

  647. for the announcement.

  648. War is over.

  649. It is finished.

  650. That's what Habakkuk

  651. is waiting for,

  652. for it to be done.

  653. Justice,

  654. complete justice

  655. to be done.

  656. And just before

  657. we move on

  658. to that promise,

  659. let's just learn

  660. from this honest question

  661. as we look at it

  662. as a whole.

  663. See how Habakkuk

  664. asks it.

  665. He doesn't doubt

  666. who God is.

  667. He doesn't deny

  668. who God has revealed

  669. himself to be.

  670. And so would we,

  671. as best as we know

  672. how,

  673. speak to God

  674. as he has revealed

  675. himself to us

  676. in his word.

  677. As both the everlasting

  678. God of judgment

  679. and also as my God,

  680. our God,

  681. the personal God.

  682. That is faith

  683. in the mess.

  684. When we pray,

  685. how often we fall

  686. into one of these traps.

  687. either seeing God

  688. as so distant,

  689. so holy,

  690. so other,

  691. so beyond us

  692. that in our reverence

  693. we fail to enjoy

  694. relationship with him.

  695. Friends,

  696. we can pray

  697. with Habakkuk,

  698. my God,

  699. and know

  700. that he is with us.

  701. We thought about

  702. that with Ray

  703. this morning

  704. for those of you

  705. who are here.

  706. And that's because

  707. of what Christ

  708. has done for us.

  709. Though he is

  710. utterly holy

  711. and totally beyond us,

  712. he is nevertheless

  713. our friend.

  714. But on the other side

  715. of that coin

  716. there is another trap,

  717. isn't there,

  718. where we pray to God

  719. as though he is not holy,

  720. as though he is not eternal,

  721. as though he were nothing

  722. but our best friend

  723. who does not want us

  724. to change,

  725. who is not looking

  726. for repentance

  727. and faith.

  728. We have got to see

  729. that our God

  730. is both way bigger

  731. than we could possibly imagine

  732. and way more familiar

  733. than we could possibly hope.

  734. Notice too

  735. how Habakkuk

  736. humbly and honestly

  737. asks his question

  738. and then

  739. waits.

  740. He waits

  741. for God

  742. to speak.

  743. Nowhere in the Bible

  744. does it tell us

  745. not to ask our questions.

  746. The more you ask

  747. questions of God,

  748. the more your faith

  749. will grow.

  750. But as we go

  751. to God

  752. with our questions,

  753. we have to be prepared

  754. for him to speak.

  755. I'm not talking

  756. about an audible voice.

  757. It might not even

  758. mean a supernatural

  759. sense of clarity

  760. revealed out of nowhere.

  761. And yet God

  762. has spoken

  763. and he does

  764. speak

  765. through his word

  766. today.

  767. And so

  768. as we pray,

  769. as we approach

  770. God with our

  771. honest questions,

  772. especially about

  773. justice this evening,

  774. will we be prepared

  775. to patiently

  776. study his word

  777. and hear

  778. what he has

  779. to say to us?

  780. Indeed,

  781. we see here

  782. in Habakkuk

  783. how God

  784. would respond

  785. to exactly

  786. this question.

  787. Last week

  788. with a surprising

  789. promise of justice,

  790. this week

  791. we see a complete

  792. promise,

  793. complete justice.

  794. See in verse 2

  795. as the Lord

  796. replies,

  797. write down

  798. the revelation

  799. and make it

  800. plain on tablets

  801. so that a

  802. herald may run

  803. with it.

  804. God is saying

  805. that these words

  806. that I'm speaking

  807. are meant to be

  808. permanent,

  809. written down,

  810. they're to be

  811. shared,

  812. they are for all

  813. to hear.

  814. And at this point

  815. I think we've got

  816. to understand

  817. this is why

  818. this book

  819. was written

  820. because this

  821. complete promise,

  822. it doesn't just

  823. apply to Habakkuk's

  824. question about

  825. Judah,

  826. it doesn't just

  827. apply to Babylon,

  828. it doesn't just

  829. apply to the

  830. 7th century BC,

  831. something much

  832. bigger is happening

  833. here because

  834. God's word

  835. speaks today.

  836. Indeed as we

  837. read on in

  838. verse 3,

  839. for the revelation

  840. awaits an

  841. appointed time,

  842. it speaks of

  843. the end

  844. and will not

  845. prove false.

  846. In other words

  847. this complete

  848. justice,

  849. it is ultimately

  850. a justice that

  851. will not come

  852. until the very

  853. end of the

  854. world.

  855. When the

  856. curtains are

  857. closed and

  858. the show is

  859. over,

  860. when the

  861. message comes

  862. over the

  863. wireless,

  864. the war in

  865. Europe is

  866. over.

  867. It may seem

  868. slow in the

  869. coming.

  870. Remember Habakkuk

  871. prays in chapter

  872. 1, how long?

  873. But God

  874. responds here

  875. still in verse

  876. 3,

  877. though it

  878. linger,

  879. wait for it,

  880. it will

  881. certainly come

  882. and will

  883. not delay.

  884. It may feel

  885. as though it's

  886. never going to

  887. come, but

  888. a thousand years

  889. is like a day

  890. for the eternal

  891. Lord of the

  892. universe.

  893. And the promise

  894. here is that it

  895. will come

  896. and that when it

  897. does, it will

  898. be swift.

  899. But we have to

  900. ask what exactly

  901. will that justice

  902. look like?

  903. What does God's

  904. justice actually

  905. do?

  906. Well read on

  907. with me.

  908. In verses

  909. 4 and 5

  910. we get another

  911. picture of the

  912. Babylonian from

  913. God here.

  914. He describes

  915. the Babylonian

  916. as puffed up,

  917. arrogant, as

  918. greedy as the

  919. grave.

  920. He gathers to

  921. himself all the

  922. nations and

  923. takes captive

  924. all the

  925. peoples.

  926. It is primarily

  927. a picture of

  928. the Babylonian.

  929. But as we dig

  930. into these

  931. verses, isn't

  932. this really just

  933. a picture of

  934. humanity?

  935. Humanity whose

  936. desires are not

  937. upright, who

  938. is never at

  939. rest, never

  940. satisfied.

  941. In other words,

  942. a humanity that

  943. lives as though

  944. God does not

  945. exist.

  946. And so indulging

  947. all our own

  948. desires and yet

  949. in doing so

  950. never finding

  951. rest for our

  952. souls, never

  953. finding true

  954. satisfaction.

  955. The picture here

  956. is of a people

  957. who are utterly

  958. self-reliant and

  959. self-indulgent.

  960. People who are,

  961. at the beginning

  962. of verse 4,

  963. enemies of

  964. God.

  965. And so what

  966. will God's

  967. justice do?

  968. Well, before

  969. we get there,

  970. have a look at

  971. this wonderful

  972. promise.

  973. Sorry, I'll go

  974. back.

  975. There's this

  976. but at the

  977. end of verse 4.

  978. It's one of my

  979. favorite buts in

  980. the Bible.

  981. But the

  982. righteous person

  983. will live by

  984. his faithfulness.

  985. There is

  986. another way.

  987. The promise is

  988. that we do not

  989. need to be

  990. self-reliant.

  991. That we can

  992. instead rely on

  993. God, trust

  994. him, be

  995. faithful to

  996. him and be

  997. found to be

  998. righteous in

  999. him.

  1000. This is such an

  1001. important concept

  1002. for the Christian

  1003. gospel.

  1004. It's picked up by

  1005. writers in the

  1006. New Testament.

  1007. They say the

  1008. righteous shall

  1009. live by faith.

  1010. And it's

  1011. really what we

  1012. saw last week.

  1013. That is the

  1014. surprising promise

  1015. as we look to

  1016. Jesus who

  1017. lived a

  1018. perfectly

  1019. righteous life

  1020. in our place,

  1021. who took the

  1022. justice of the

  1023. world on his

  1024. shoulders so

  1025. that by faith

  1026. his righteousness

  1027. might be freely

  1028. given to us.

  1029. If you're here

  1030. and you don't

  1031. know Jesus,

  1032. that is the

  1033. message.

  1034. It's right at

  1035. the heart of

  1036. what we believe

  1037. as Christians.

  1038. And so it's in

  1039. the context of

  1040. that promise

  1041. that we read

  1042. the woes that

  1043. follow.

  1044. If you scan

  1045. your eyes over

  1046. the rest of

  1047. chapter 2,

  1048. we're going to

  1049. speed up quite a

  1050. lot here, but

  1051. that's what we

  1052. get.

  1053. Five woes.

  1054. If you see that

  1055. repeated refrain

  1056. in the rest of

  1057. chapter 2 at the

  1058. beginning of each

  1059. paragraph and then

  1060. again at the

  1061. beginning of verse

  1062. 19, woe to

  1063. him.

  1064. In other words,

  1065. judgment is

  1066. coming to

  1067. him.

  1068. We don't

  1069. have time to

  1070. unpack each of

  1071. these in detail,

  1072. but see what

  1073. God's justice

  1074. looks like.

  1075. That's the

  1076. question we want

  1077. to answer.

  1078. Track with me.

  1079. The first is

  1080. there in verses

  1081. 6 and 7.

  1082. He piles up

  1083. stolen goods.

  1084. God says he

  1085. has taken things

  1086. that don't belong

  1087. to him.

  1088. It's theft.

  1089. And then the

  1090. judgment comes in

  1091. verse 8.

  1092. The peoples who

  1093. are left will

  1094. plunder you.

  1095. The second is

  1096. similar.

  1097. It's empire

  1098. building through

  1099. injustice.

  1100. See in verse

  1101. 9, he builds

  1102. his house by

  1103. unjust gain,

  1104. setting his

  1105. nest on high to

  1106. escape the

  1107. clutches of

  1108. ruin.

  1109. He's amassing

  1110. wealth.

  1111. The picture here,

  1112. it's like he's a

  1113. killer magpie,

  1114. right?

  1115. Not just pinching

  1116. the shiny necklace

  1117. and carrying it

  1118. off to the safety

  1119. of his nest,

  1120. but also pecking

  1121. the wearer to

  1122. death.

  1123. death.

  1124. And the

  1125. judgment for the

  1126. Babylonian is in

  1127. verse 10.

  1128. It's shame for his

  1129. house and ultimately

  1130. death coming to him

  1131. himself.

  1132. The third woe begins

  1133. to focus more sharply

  1134. on violence.

  1135. See in verse 12,

1136. it is the bloodshed of

  1137. empire building.

  1138. And so comes the

  1139. judgment in verse 13.

  1140. As they bring

  1141. destruction, so will

  1142. they be destroyed.

1143. They will be fuel for

  1144. the fire.

  1145. And then the image

  1146. in the fourth woe,

  1147. I think, becomes much

  1148. more personal.

  1149. The charge here,

  1150. degrading their

  1151. enemies.

  1152. See in verse 15,

  1153. it's like an ancient

  1154. date rape drug.

  1155. He gets them drunk

  1156. and gazes upon their

  1157. nakedness.

  1158. Terrific abuse,

  1159. that.

  1160. And the judgment in

  1161. verse 16,

  1162. he will be filled

  1163. with shame.

1164. It is his turn to be

  1165. filled with wine and

  1166. exposed.

  1167. And the fifth and

1168. final woe, this is the

  1169. climax of it all,

  1170. idolatry.

  1171. Putting man-made

  1172. things, images and

  1173. carvings, putting them

1174. in the place of God

  1175. and saying to them,

  1176. come to life,

  1177. which of course they

  1178. can't.

  1179. The Lord, on the

  1180. other hand, in verse

1181. 20, he is in his

  1182. holy temple.

  1183. Be silent before him.

  1184. Why?

1185. For he does have life,

  1186. he will speak,

  1187. and his judgment

  1188. will come.

1189. So these are the five

  1190. woes proclaimed

  1191. against Babylon.

  1192. As we read them,

  1193. what does that justice

  1194. look like?

  1195. What does God's

  1196. justice do?

  1197. Well, two key things

  1198. for us.

  1199. Firstly, notice how

  1200. God's justice is

  1201. just.

  1202. The punishment fits

  1203. the crime.

  1204. As the Babylonian

  1205. plunders, so will

  1206. he be plundered.

  1207. As he builds a

  1208. house, his house

  1209. will be put to

  1210. shame.

  1211. As he brings

  1212. destruction, he

  1213. will be destroyed.

  1214. As he shames his

  1215. enemies, he will be

  1216. shamed.

  1217. And ultimately, as he

  1218. glorifies idols,

  1219. God will be seen

  1220. to be glorious.

  1221. God's justice

  1222. is just.

  1223. Notice in that

  1224. that it's not the

  1225. one who has been

  1226. wronged who executes

  1227. that justice.

  1228. God is the judge

  1229. and he brings

  1230. justice himself

  1231. by his own

  1232. means.

  1233. God's justice

  1234. is just.

  1235. Secondly, God's

  1236. complete justice

  1237. is ultimately

  1238. eternal.

  1239. See back in

  1240. verse 3,

  1241. way back in

  1242. verse 3, we

  1243. saw it speaks

  1244. of the end.

  1245. This is not

  1246. just a promise

  1247. to Habakkuk

  1248. that Babylon

  1249. would not be

  1250. spared God's

  1251. judgment.

  1252. Take it, that's

  1253. why it is to

  1254. be written

  1255. down.

  1256. And so we

  1257. see in verse

  1258. 14 that the

  1259. earth will be

  1260. filled with the

  1261. knowledge of the

  1262. glory of the

  1263. Lord as the

  1264. waters cover the

  1265. sea.

  1266. This is an

  1267. image of God's

  1268. glory in saving

  1269. his people,

  1270. bringing justice

  1271. to the Babylonians

  1272. so that through it

  1273. and through his

  1274. people the whole

  1275. world might know

  1276. him.

  1277. But the final

  1278. fulfillment of that

  1279. promise, it is

  1280. ultimately an

  1281. eternal promise.

  1282. promise.

  1283. It is a promise

  1284. that is made

  1285. good upon

  1286. Jesus' return.

  1287. As he paid the

  1288. price for that

  1289. justice to be

  1290. done on the

  1291. cross, as he

  1292. proved that he

  1293. had done so as

  1294. he rose again,

  1295. and he promised

  1296. that he would

  1297. ultimately return

  1298. to carry out that

  1299. justice and

  1300. completion.

  1301. Why?

  1302. So that the

  1303. whole earth might

  1304. be filled with

  1305. his glory.

  1306. For us, there

  1307. is immense

  1308. comfort in

  1309. this, as

  1310. well as

  1311. holy fear.

  1312. Comfort, because

  1313. we can know

  1314. that every

  1315. injustice will

  1316. be dealt

  1317. with.

  1318. That really

  1319. is huge.

  1320. But if God's

  1321. justice is

  1322. just, then

  1323. every single

  1324. injustice of

  1325. human history,

  1326. every murder,

  1327. every rape,

  1328. every war

  1329. crime, every

  1330. theft, every

  1331. lie, whether

  1332. they are dealt

  1333. with humanly or

  1334. not, whether

  1335. they are dealt

  1336. with on this

  1337. side of eternity

  1338. or not, God's

  1339. justice is

  1340. just.

  1341. That means

  1342. that Stalin

  1343. did not get

  1344. away with

  1345. it, not

  1346. really.

  1347. That means

  1348. that any

  1349. injustice that

  1350. you have

  1351. faced, if

  1352. there is a

  1353. specific person

  1354. or a group

  1355. of people that

  1356. have wronged

  1357. you, they

  1358. have not and

  1359. they will not

  1360. get away with

  1361. it.

  1362. There is

  1363. comfort here,

  1364. but I think

  1365. there also

  1366. ought to be a

  1367. holy fear.

  1368. For if we're

  1369. honest, we

  1370. know, don't

  1371. we, that

  1372. there are

  1373. things that

  1374. we have

  1375. done,

  1376. contributions

  1377. to injustice

  1378. that we have

  1379. not paid

  1380. for, that

  1381. we could

  1382. never pay

  1383. for.

  1384. And so if

  1385. God's justice

  1386. is just,

  1387. then we

  1388. too must

  1389. face it.

  1390. And this

  1391. is the

  1392. wonderful good

  1393. news of the

  1394. Christian gospel.

  1395. We know

  1396. that if we

  1397. will be found

  1398. in Christ,

  1399. if we would

  1400. trust in him,

  1401. if we would

  1402. have faith in

  1403. him, then

  1404. on that

  1405. final day,

  1406. we might be

  1407. spared his

  1408. justice, not

  1409. because he

  1410. is not

  1411. just, but

  1412. because for

  1413. those who

  1414. trust in

  1415. him, his

  1416. justice has

  1417. been done

  1418. on the

  1419. cross.

  1420. And for

  1421. us, this

  1422. is a

  1423. wonderful

  1424. truth.

  1425. For in

  1426. it, there

  1427. is a

  1428. forever

  1429. hope, not

  1430. simply that

  1431. we, though

  1432. guilty, might

  1433. be justified,

  1434. but that we

  1435. might live

  1436. forever in

  1437. a new and

  1438. perfect world,

  1439. world filled

  1440. with the

  1441. glorious

  1442. presence of

  1443. the Lord,

  1444. a world

  1445. where we

  1446. know him

  1447. perfectly.

  1448. And friends,

  1449. knowing that

  1450. today changes

  1451. everything.

  1452. It changes

  1453. our desire to

  1454. tell people

  1455. about Jesus.

  1456. If there

  1457. really is no

  1458. other way to

  1459. this wonderful

  1460. eternity, do

  1461. we not want to

  1462. point people to

  1463. him?

  1464. change is

  1465. how we use

  1466. our money.

  1467. With our

  1468. eyes fixed

  1469. on eternity,

  1470. material things

  1471. just pale in

  1472. comparison,

  1473. changes how we

  1474. spend our

  1475. time.

  1476. It changes

  1477. how we worry

  1478. about things

  1479. in this world.

  1480. It is the

  1481. real and only

  1482. secret to

  1483. true and

  1484. lasting contentment

  1485. and satisfaction

  1486. in this life.

  1487. The forever

  1488. hope of

  1489. complete,

  1490. eternal

  1491. justice.

  1492. faith in

  1493. the mess.

  1494. Let me take

  1495. you back just

  1496. as we finish

  1497. to World War

  1498. II, to

  1499. that strange

  1500. in-between.

  1501. D-Day has

  1502. happened.

  1503. You can look

  1504. back at

  1505. D-Day and

  1506. say that the

  1507. victory is

  1508. sure, despite

  1509. the mess all

  1510. around you.

  1511. But you can

  1512. look forward

  1513. to waiting

  1514. patiently for

  1515. the war to

  1516. be over.

  1517. So too in

  1518. life, as we

  1519. look back at

  1520. the surprising

  1521. justice of the

  1522. cross, we

  1523. know that

  1524. victory has

  1525. been secured.

  1526. And though

  1527. life feels

  1528. like a real

  1529. mess today,

  1530. and though we

  1531. like Habakkuk

  1532. wait patiently

  1533. in the watchtower,

  1534. God's promise

  1535. is of complete

  1536. justice.

  1537. And in

  1538. Christ we

  1539. wait,

  1540. looking to

  1541. an eternity

  1542. with a sure

  1543. hope in

  1544. him.

  1545. This is

  1546. faith in

  1547. the mess.

  1548. Let me

  1549. pray.

  1550. Heavenly

  1551. Father, we

  1552. thank you so

  1553. much for the

  1554. surprising

  1555. justice of

  1556. the cross.

  1557. Lord, we

  1558. confess that

  1559. we deserve

  1560. your justice.

  1561. And so we

  1562. thank you very

  1563. much for

  1564. Jesus.

  1565. We thank you

  1566. for the

  1567. complete promise

  1568. of eternal

  1569. justice.

  1570. Pray that you

  1571. would apply

  1572. that promise

  1573. to our hearts

  1574. by your spirit

  1575. this evening.

  1576. allow us to

  1577. be comforted

  1578. by it,

  1579. to find

  1580. hope in

  1581. it.

  1582. Would you

  1583. help us to

  1584. persevere,

  1585. to have

  1586. faith even

  1587. in the

  1588. mess?

  1589. In Jesus'

  1590. name.

  1591. Amen.
