  1. Well folks do have that passage open in front of you. So critical that we have the Lord's

  2. word open in front of us so you can make sure that what I'm saying is what the passage is

  3. saying. So with John chapter 1 open in front of you I want to tell you about my friend

    John 1 chapter mention

  4. Terry. Okay Terry, I first met him when I was doing the Cornhill course in Glasgow.

  5. So Terry is a brilliant little guy. Terry is the founder of a charity that's called Hope

  6. for Glasgow. And what they do is they work to see people get off the streets, get clean

  7. from substance abuse and get connected to a local church where they will be loved, cared

  8. for and where they will be nurtured to come to see Jesus. And the reason Terry's heart

  9. is burdened for this work is that he spent a large part of his time, previous season of

  10. his life, on the streets in Glasgow. He was a self-confessed addict. And God in his kindness

  11. brought people into Terry's life who helped him recover and who introduced him to Christ.

  12. And Terry says as he looks back on that season of his life, he says this. He says, I had to

  13. get clean in order to see how dirty I really was. Now take that in for just a minute what

  14. he's saying. So once he got his mind back, he was confronted with the depths of his heart.

  15. Right? His shame, his guilt, his selfishness, his anger, his deep-seated and rooted bitterness.

  16. As it worked itself out in his life, both horizontally and most importantly, vertically, as he considered

  17. himself in light of this holy God who he just heard about. I had to get clean in order to see

  18. just how dirty I really was. And I find that a fascinating admission for two reasons. Firstly,

  19. because it's not how our culture would finish that sentence. I had to get clean to realize

  20. my full potential. I had to get clean in order to realize just how great I was. I had to get

  21. clean to realize that I'm worth it. You know that slogan from L'Oreal? I was reading this week

  22. that since it was introduced in 1971, it's been translated into over 40 different languages.

  23. Pretty good, isn't it? But why? Because it doesn't matter where you are in the world.

  24. We love hearing that we're worth it. And yet, here's what writer Rebecca McLaughlin points out in her

  25. brilliant book, Confronting Jesus. And she's a writer, if you've not read her, she's just a brilliant

  26. apologist for the Christian faith. There's a QR code there. Don't get distracted by it, but feel

  27. free to click it and you can check it out later, okay? She says this in this book that I'm reading

  28. just now. She says, isn't it striking that the people who are most drawn to Jesus, as you read

  29. about him graciously welcoming and transforming people in the gospels, isn't it striking that it's

  30. those people that believe about themselves the exact opposite? Which takes us to the second thing

  31. that's striking about Terry's comment? That he would be the first to tell you that him owning it

  32. proved to be for him not the gateway to despair. It proved to be for him the doorway to life.

  33. And if we're wondering to ourselves how on earth that works, which I take it, whatever is going on

  34. in our lives and whatever we think about the God of the Bible, we are, then this passage wonderfully

  35. tells us the answer. Primarily because it shows us what God has done to deal with our dirt.

  36. Now, if you've got the passage there today, you'll see John the gospel writer introduces us

  37. to two men. And the first man is at verses 19 to 28, and he's a servant who's in the business

  38. of pointing away. So his name is John, right? Not to be confused with John the author. This is John

  39. the Baptist. John the Baptist, at this point in time, is the new kid on the block in Galilee.

  40. If he was around today, he'd be trending on Twitter. His words would be getting shares on Facebook.

  41. His photos would be getting liked on Instagram. John the Baptist is big news in Galilee.

  42. And I think he's big news because he's not your average guy. Everything about John the Baptist,

  43. as you read about him in the gospels, is strange. Okay? Strange dress sense. A garment of camel's hair

  44. and a leather belt. Not going to see that one in Milan anytime soon, are we? Strange dress sense.

  45. Strange eating habits. Locusts and wild honey. Again, not going to be on the menu at the Shuma anytime

  46. soon, is it? Locusts and wild honey. And strange practices. So John the Baptist, it's in the name.

  47. What has he been doing? He's been baptizing. That's why he's making the headlines. Now, religious washings

  48. would appear to have been around at this time in the religious world, but there's clearly something

  49. striking and different as to the notch that John the Baptist is upping it to and his message that goes

  50. alongside it. Now, if you're in the text, verse 19, come with me.

  51. The religious authorities of the day send Levites and priests on a scouting mission. Do you see it?

  52. They send them to find out who this man really is. Simple question, verse 21. It's probably the one

  53. that we're all asking this morning. Three words. Who are you? Candidates, do you see them in the text?

  54. Are you Elijah? This Old Testament prophet who didn't die but was drawn up to heaven. Are you him?

  55. Come back. Are you the prophet of Deuteronomy 18? The man that Moses said that God would raise up

  56. after him who would speak to the people, the very words of God. Are you him? Who are you?

  57. Well, whilst everything on the surface may appear strange with this guy,

  58. look behind the scenes and John's arrival is profoundly significant when you consider the bigger

  59. Bible story. Now, John the writer has already introduced us to John the Baptist at verses

  60. six to eight of chapter one. Glance there if you want. Okay. He wants us to know that this man is a

  61. witness. Now, if you include the word testify there, you'll notice that between those verses six to eight

  62. of chapter one and our verses today, that concept comes up six times. So John the author wants us to

  63. know that John the Baptist is a witness, right? What's he witnessing to? That's the question. He's

  64. a witness. But John, the author, also wants us to know that John the Baptist, he also wants John

  65. the Baptist to speak for himself. Verse 23, who are you, John the Baptist? He is the voice of one crying

  66. in the wilderness, makes straight the way of the Lord. Now, he's quoting, and John tells us there,

  67. he's quoting the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. And specifically, he's quoting chapter 40. Now,

  68. if we get this, and this is a little bit of mental work, if we get this, we will see why John the Baptist

  69. appearing is such brilliant news for us here today. Okay. Isaiah chapter 40, God has been making a

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  70. promise to his people who are in exile in Babylon. Okay. They're away from their homeland.

  71. Their enemies have defeated them. They're away over there, suffering under cruel impressors. God has

  72. made a promise to his people over there that he's going to come to them, he's going to rescue them,

  73. and he's going to lead them out to the place where he's prepared for them. And God is saying,

  74. you will know that that promise is about to kick in, that I've come to deal with your biggest problem.

  75. You'll know it's about to kick in when you hear a voice telling you to get ready.

  76. I'm going to send somebody up front, just out ahead, who's going to tell you that I'm coming.

  77. And he's going to say, God's coming just over my shoulder. You've got to get ready. And do you know

  78. what? He's coming to save us. This is the voice that God is going to send. Right? Do you know,

  79. my brother sent a video last week on our family WhatsApp group? Okay. I love a family WhatsApp

  80. group. Brother lives in Stockbridge, just north of the city. And so last week, I forget which day it

  81. was. He goes up to Queen's Furry Roads and he goes up to see the Queen's Hearst coming into Edinburgh.

  82. Right? And so he videos this thing. What an incredible thing to say that you've witnessed. And it was a

  83. five minute walk from his flat. Incredible. Right? One of those once in a lifetime moments. But he sends

  84. this video around. And what's striking about the video is that the first thing that you see

  85. is not the hearse. The first thing that you see and you hear are the flashing lights of the police

  86. motorbikes who've gone up ahead. And they've got one job. Their one job is to make sure what is clear.

  87. The roads are clear. Right? People are off to the side. There's no bits of metal or anything in the road

  88. that's going to burst the tires. Everything has to be ready. Clear the way. Because the car's coming

  89. just behind me. And sure enough, as soon as the people in the video, we could see it. As soon as

  90. they saw the bikes, there they are with their cameras out. Because they know that the bikes tell

  91. them that the very thing that they're waiting on is just about to come. Friends, John the Baptist is the

  92. motorbike in this day. He's gone out ahead. He's getting people ready. He's saying, God is coming.

  93. You need to get ready. His message is a moral one. Okay? He's saying, get your life in gear. Change

  94. your ways. Lift your eyes. Stop cheating. Stop lying. Clean up your act. Because our creator, our God,

  95. is coming. And boy, do people respond when you put it together with the other gospels. All strata of

  96. society respond to his message. Tax collectors respond. Roman soldiers respond. They say, what do

  97. we need to do? I imagine that they respond because they're people who know that their lives are those

  98. that need to get ready. But notice the attitude by which John does his baptizing. Verse 27.

  99. He says, the one who comes after me, the one I'm telling you is just about to come, I'm not even

  100. worthy to untie the straps of his sandals. Now listen, you might be here and see the thought of feet.

  101. It gives you the heebie-jeebies, right? But just be thankful that you don't live in the first century

  102. where people's feet into the bargain are sweaty and dirty. Now you read around this and a pupil,

  103. is they sit under the teaching of a rabbi, right? There's many things that they would do to serve

  104. their rabbi, the one that they're learning from. But the one thing that was off bounds,

  105. the one thing is a no-go, the one thing that is not even a pupil should have to stoop down to

  106. is washing feet. And yet John considers the greatness of the one who's just coming behind him.

  107. And he says, I'm not even worthy to do that job.

  108. Such is the humility. Do you not love his humility?

  109. The one who's coming, don't look at me. I'm ducking out of the way. Don't look at me. Look at him who's coming.

  110. There's a story told about Alexander the Great,

  111. the great leader of ancient Greece.

  112. A story told about how he proudly just

  113. parades into town on his horse,

  114. right?

  115. Wants his people to see how great he is.

  116. And he goes up to

  117. an individual called

  118. Diogenes. He goes up to him,

  119. he puffs out his chest, gets down off the horse,

  120. and this big brute of a man goes over to

  121. Diogenes and says,

  122. what do you want me to do for you?

  123. And Diogenes

  124. cheekily replies,

  125. I just want you to move to the side

  126. because you're blocking the sun.

  127. Do you not love the

  128. humility here of John the Baptist?

  129. I don't want to get in the way of the sun.

  130. And I take it

  131. evangelistically, that's a lesson for us

  132. as well, as we think about our life as disciples.

  133. We just want to get

  134. out of the way of the sun.

  135. It's not about us.

  136. It's not about us.

  137. It's about him.

  138. The disciples of Jesus

  139. saying, don't look at me.

  140. Look at him.

  141. He is the

  142. servant, John the Baptist, who's in the business

  143. of pointing away.

  144. And he's pointing away

  145. secondly, verse 29 to 34,

  146. to the king who's in the business

  147. of taking away.

  148. So back in the text, you see the next

  149. day John saw Jesus

  150. coming. And notice the description

  151. of who John says that Jesus is.

  152. And remember, John, the writer,

  153. is recording all this

  154. for a reason.

  155. You don't waste ink in this day.

  156. You don't waste thoughts.

  157. It's not kind of

  158. tweeting or blogging or Facebook posts.

  159. There's a lot of effort goes into

  160. documenting this.

  161. So you want people to know this.

  162. Who does John know that Jesus is?

  163. He is the one who existed before me.

  164. He's the one

  165. who is greater than me.

  166. The reason I came baptizing.

  167. And at last, John answers the question.

  168. Verse 31.

  169. Here's the reason I came.

  170. I came that he might be revealed

  171. to Israel.

  172. Who is he?

  173. Just notice the two titles

  174. that John gives Jesus here.

  175. He is the

  176. lamb who's come to take away

  177. the sin of the world.

  178. And here's what I reckon, John,

  179. knowing

  180. who he is,

  181. what he thinks,

  182. as he looks at Jesus.

  183. And at this point in the narrative,

  184. do you see his

  185. clock dies on Jesus.

  186. Here's what I reckon

  187. is going through

  188. John's

  189. mind.

  190. Isaiah 40.

  191. God declares to his people

  192. who are in exile,

  193. I'm coming to rescue you

  194. and take you out.

  195. But right at the beginning

  196. of Isaiah chapter 40,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  197. the only reason

  198. that God can do that

  199. is because

  200. he's dealt with

  201. our

  202. iniquity.

  203. The only reason

  204. it's possible

  205. that God can say

  206. he's coming to save

  207. is because your

  208. iniquity,

  209. your sin

  210. that caused me

  211. to send you

  212. into exile

  213. in the first place.

  214. That sin,

  215. I have dealt

  216. with it,

  217. is pardoned,

  218. is not swept

  219. under the carpet,

  220. is not written off

  221. as a bad debt.

  222. This God,

  223. he's coming

  224. to deal with it.

  225. Now what kind of God

  226. would he be

  227. if that's how he treated

  228. and viewed all the wrongs

  229. in the world?

  230. That he swept them

  231. under the carpet,

  232. that he wrote them off

  233. as a bad debt?

  234. No, this God

  235. and remember

  236. who he is,

  237. the one who knows

  238. the end from the beginning

  239. as he considered

  240. the lamb

  241. who was slain

  242. before the foundation

  243. of the world.

  244. This God says

  245. not I will deal

  246. with it,

  247. this God says

  248. I've dealt

  249. with it.

  250. But you're still

  251. reading it

  252. and you're asking

  253. how?

  254. How have you dealt

  255. with it?

  256. Remember that?

  257. Your math teacher

  258. at school,

  259. remember what they said

  260. you got marks for?

  261. Not so much the answer

  262. although that definitely

  263. helped.

  264. What did you get marks for?

  265. Showing you're working,

  266. right?

  267. So what's happened

  268. to that iniquity

  269. that God said

  270. has been pardoned?

  271. Isaiah chapter 40,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  272. you go on a few chapters

  273. to Isaiah 53

  274. and you read about

  275. God's saviour

  276. who will be a man

  277. of sorrows

  278. acquainted

  279. with grief

  280. who will be like

  281. a sacrificial lamb

  282. and who God

  283. will take

  284. and lead

  285. to the slaughter

  286. and who

  287. on whom

  288. God will

  289. lay like straw

  290. all the iniquity

  291. of his people.

  292. He will lay it

  293. all on him.

  294. This is how God

  295. is going to pardon

  296. his people's iniquity.

  297. He is going to lay it

  298. all on the sacrificial lamb.

  299. How will God deal

  300. with the iniquity

  301. of his people?

  302. He'll lay it

  303. on the lamb.

  304. The lamb will die

  305. instead of the people

  306. and the people

  307. will live

  308. instead of the lamb.

  309. And in that context

  310. you see what this does?

  311. As John sees Jesus,

  312. God come to save,

  313. God coming over my shoulder,

  314. he says,

  315. Behold

  316. the lamb

  317. of God.

  318. Because this lamb

  319. has come

  320. to bear

  321. our iniquity

  322. on himself.

  323. words that will be

  324. fulfilled

  325. as Jesus goes

  326. to the cross,

  327. silently endures

  328. unjust torture

  329. and death,

  330. bearing the punishment,

  331. the iniquity

  332. of his people

  333. on himself.

  334. He bears

  335. their

  336. dirt.

  337. And if your trust

  338. is in him

  339. today,

  340. no matter how weak

  341. you think your faith

  342. is,

  343. if you're looking

  344. to him,

  345. know that the lamb

  346. took your iniquity

  347. on himself.

  348. You need not

  349. pay for it

  350. anymore

  351. because the lamb

  352. died

  353. in your place.

  354. The iniquities,

  355. all of our iniquities

  356. were on him

  357. laid.

  358. And that's why

  359. Christians down the

  360. centuries have

  361. rejoiced in this

  362. chapter of Isaiah

  363. 53.

  364. We all like sheep

  365. have gone astray,

  366. each one to his own

  367. way,

  368. but the Lord

  369. has laid

  370. on him

  371. the iniquity

  372. of his all.

  373. And John

  374. says,

  375. behold,

  376. the lamb

  377. of God

  378. who takes

  379. away

  380. the sin

  381. of the

  382. world.

  383. Brothers and

  384. sisters,

  385. if you are

  386. struggling with

  387. guilt and shame

  388. today,

  389. if you are

  390. struggling with

  391. your dirt,

  392. look to the

  393. lamb.

  394. He never

  395. ceases to be

  396. a lamb who

  397. was slain.

  398. Yes,

  399. he is king

  400. in glory,

  401. but what is

  402. described in

  403. Revelation?

  404. At the

  405. throne is

  406. a lamb who

  407. was slain.

  408. He's died

  409. for our

  410. iniquity.

  411. My sin

  412. put him

  413. there.

  414. Some of you

  415. might know

  416. Rembrandt

  417. famously painted

  418. the crucifixion

  419. scene.

  420. What you might

  421. not know is

  422. that Rembrandt

  423. painted himself

  424. into that

  425. crucifixion

  426. scene.

  427. He painted

  428. himself into

  429. the scene as

  430. one of the

  431. men who was

  432. crucifying Jesus,

  433. as if to say,

  434. in one sense,

  435. I wasn't there

  436. that day.

  437. But in

  438. another sense,

  439. I absolutely

  440. was.

  441. It was my

  442. sin that put

  443. him there.

  444. It was my

  445. iniquity that

  446. he died

  447. for.

  448. Behold,

  449. the Lamb

  450. of God,

  451. the words of

  452. the old hymn,

  453. t'was I that

  454. shed the sacred

  455. blood.

  456. I nailed him

  457. to the tree.

  458. I crucified

  459. the Christ

  460. of God.

  461. I joined

  462. the mockery.

  463. It was our

  464. sin that he

  465. took.

  466. It was my

  467. sin that

  468. put him

  469. there.

  470. Don

  471. Carson,

  472. I think,

  473. New Testament

  474. commentator,

  475. helpfully clarifies

  476. the meaning of

  477. the word

  478. world here.

  479. The Lamb

  480. of God

  481. takes away

  482. the sin

  483. of the

  484. world.

  485. That is to

  486. all human

  487. beings without

  488. distinction,

  489. though not to

  490. all without

  491. exception.

  492. I was reading

  493. an article this

  494. week in the

  495. Telegraph that

  496. reflected on the

  497. events of the

  498. last ten days

  499. and it was

  500. reflecting on the

  501. fact that

  502. subconsciously,

  503. and I think

  504. this is true,

  505. we kind of all

  506. believed the

  507. Queen was going

  508. to live forever.

  509. She was just

  510. always there.

  511. How many people

  512. have you heard

  513. reflect on the

  514. fact that our

  515. whole life she

  516. was just always

  517. there?

  518. And how this

  519. week we've all

  520. been reminded of

  521. our own mortality.

  522. Everyone dies.

  523. Here then is an

  524. invitation to all

  525. the world to

  526. trust in Jesus

  527. and by faith

  528. know the truth

  529. that there is

  530. forgiveness in

  531. the Lamb who

  532. takes away our

  533. sin.

  534. And let me just

  535. lovingly say by

  536. implication, all

  537. those who don't

  538. trust in the

  539. Lamb, the math

  540. says that that

  541. iniquity still

  542. sits on you.

  543. We're all going

  544. to have to give

  545. an account in the

  546. end before our

  547. righteous and

  548. just creator.

  549. How we've lived

  550. before him.

  551. And in light,

  552. friends, of who

  553. we all are, do

  554. see the good

  555. news that the

  556. Lamb of God has

  557. come to take

  558. away the sin of

  559. the world.

  560. He is the

  561. Lamb of God

  562. and he is the

  563. Lamb, verse 33,

  564. who gives the

  565. spirit.

  566. As Jesus is

  567. baptized, and I

  568. think that's what

  569. John is reflecting

  570. on here.

  571. Jesus baptized,

  572. and be clear on

  573. this, not to

  574. repent of his

  575. own sin, but to

  576. associate himself

  577. with the very

  578. people that he's

  579. come to save.

  580. The Holy Spirit

  581. comes down, do

  582. you notice in the

  583. text, in the

  584. form of a

  585. dove?

  586. Right?

  587. Likely a, I

  588. don't fall out,

  589. maybe disagree

  590. over this, but

  591. likely a symbolic

  592. presence of God's

  593. peace.

  594. Okay, just as in

  595. the days of Noah,

  596. the dove returns,

  597. symbolizing that

  598. peace between God

  599. and man was

  600. here.

  601. I think similarly,

  602. the ultimate peace

  603. between God and

  604. man that that no

  605. episode points us

  606. to will be what

  607. Jesus is.

  608. Death and resurrection

  609. will accomplish for

  610. all who believe,

  611. peace with God.

  612. But John's

  613. emphasis here is

  614. that that dove,

  615. the spirit,

  616. remains on Jesus.

  617. So the word

  618. remains, I think,

  619. with the emphasis

  620. is he remains on

  621. Christ.

  622. You see, in the

  623. Old Testament, the

  624. spirit came on an

  625. individual, empowered

  626. them for a God-given

  627. task.

  628. But in those

  629. instances, the

  630. spirit empowering

  631. was temporary.

  632. So it's striking

  633. here then that John

  634. wants us to know

  635. that the spirit, as

  636. the spirit falls on

  637. Jesus, remains.

  638. Right?

  639. Enabling him to

  640. live the perfect

  641. life, I take it

  642. enabling him to

  643. know the love of

  644. his father.

  645. John's baptism

  646. could only really

  647. instruct somebody

  648. externally.

  649. It could only

  650. really encourage

  651. somebody morally.

  652. But Jesus is

  653. baptism.

  654. Not the

  655. baptism as

  656. anything special.

  657. But understand,

  658. it's what it

  659. symbolizes.

  660. As our lives

  661. become wholly

  662. bound to his,

  663. that's what we're

  664. doing as we go

  665. under the water

  666. and come back up.

  667. The shape of

  668. Jesus' life is the

  669. shape of our

  670. lives now.

  671. If you haven't

  672. been baptized,

  673. you've got to do

  674. it.

  675. Come and do it.

  676. Make it happen.

  677. That baptism is

  678. Jesus gives us

  679. the spirit,

  680. the very presence

  681. of God coming

  682. to live inside

  683. of us.

  684. That baptism

  685. doesn't change

  686. us externally.

  687. It changes

  688. us internally.

  689. As the very

  690. presence of God

  691. takes up residence

  692. in the life's

  693. of his people.

  694. And he

  695. transforms us

  696. from the inside

  697. out.

  698. That's what

  699. John's baptism

  700. couldn't do.

  701. That this is

  702. what Jesus'

  703. baptism will

  704. do.

  705. And so the

  706. question is,

  707. as we respond

  708. to this this

  709. morning,

  710. are we living

  711. our every day

  712. in light of

  713. the Lamb?

  714. You know,

  715. just as we

  716. close,

  717. and maybe to

  718. help us

  719. think about

  720. it,

  721. friends,

  722. let me tell

  723. you about the

  724. car that we

  725. drove in

  726. America.

  727. John and

  728. Kelsey generously

  729. lent us their

  730. car when we

  731. were over

  732. there.

  733. Olin,

  734. who's here,

  735. drove it down

  736. to Chicago,

  737. we picked it

  738. up there.

  739. Incredibly

  740. generous of

  741. them.

  742. But the

  743. minute I

  744. stepped into

  745. this car,

  746. I realised

  747. that things

  748. were different.

  749. Automatic,

  750. steering wheel

  751. on the other

  752. side,

  753. driving on

  754. the right

  755. side of the

  756. road.

  757. That is a

  758. royal flush

  759. of differences.

  760. for the

  761. first few

  762. days,

  763. all I

  764. heard in

  765. the car

  766. was beep,

  767. beep,

  768. beep,

  769. beep,

  770. beep,

  771. beep,

  772. beep.

  773. No idea

  774. what this

  775. noise is.

  776. Beep,

  777. beep,

  778. beep,

  779. beep,

  780. beep,

  781. beep,

  782. beep.

  783. Okay,

  784. that's

  785. getting

  786. annoying.

  787. Beep,

  788. beep,

  789. beep,

  790. beep,

  791. beep,

  792. beep,

  793. beep.

  794. This is

  795. a four-hour

  796. journey,

  797. and I'm

  798. going to

  799. follow up

  800. with someone

  801. if I don't

  802. find out

  803. what this

  804. noise is.

  805. Beep,

  806. beep,

  807. beep,

  808. beep,

  809. beep,

  810. beep.

  811. Do you

  812. know what

  813. telling me

  814. that I

  815. was drifting?

  816. And beep,

  817. beep,

  818. beep,

  819. beep,

  820. beep was

  821. code for

  822. get yourself

  823. back to

  824. the center.

  825. Friends,

  826. what we've

  827. looked at

  828. this morning,

  829. the lamb

  830. who takes

  831. away the

  832. sin of

  833. the world,

  834. the gospel,

  835. is the

  836. center of

  837. Christianity.

  838. It is

  839. the wondrous

  840. heartbeat

  841. of God,

  842. the center

  843. of our

  844. faith,

  845. and the

  846. question is,

  847. friends,

  848. is it the

  849. center of

  850. our lives?

  851. And as we

  852. think about

  853. our lives in

  854. response to

  855. this passage

  856. today,

  857. here's an

  858. observation.

  859. How easy

  860. is it to

  861. drift?

  862. How easy

  863. is it to

  864. think to

  865. myself as I

  866. go about my

  867. day every

  868. day,

  869. do I really

  870. need the

  871. lamb?

  872. Do I really

  873. need him?

  874. Does he make

  875. any difference

  876. to my

  877. life?

  878. Do you

  879. know how I

  880. see myself

  881. drifting?

  882. Two ways.

  883. It's when my

  884. default reaction

  885. to my sin is

  886. one of two

  887. things.

  888. Firstly,

  889. it's that I

  890. try and

  891. cover up.

  892. When I get

  893. it wrong,

  894. it's just to

  895. write it off.

  896. It's not

  897. really that

  898. big a deal,

  899. my sin.

  900. I try and

  901. justify it to

  902. myself that I

  903. only thought that

  904. or said that

  905. because it was

  906. the other

  907. person's fault.

  908. they're the

  909. ones that got

  910. me riled up.

  911. It's their

  912. sin.

  913. No,

  914. it's not.

  915. It's my

  916. sin.

  917. It's my

  918. sin.

  919. Friends,

  920. let me just

  921. ask you,

  922. when was the

  923. last time you

  924. said sorry?

  925. When was the

  926. last time you

  927. got clean and

  928. said a costly,

  929. I got it

  930. wrong,

  931. to your

  932. spouse,

  933. to your

  934. children?

  935. Most

  936. importantly,

  937. our

  938. children,

  939. I say this

  940. all the

  941. time,

  942. listen,

  943. daddy needs

  944. Jesus just

  945. as much as

  946. you do.

  947. Oh,

  948. friends,

  949. to your

  950. colleagues,

  951. to your

  952. flatmates,

  953. how easy

  954. is it to

  955. cover up

  956. our sin?

  957. Or secondly,

  958. I try and

  959. cover up,

  960. secondly,

  961. I try and

  962. make up.

  963. I think to

  964. myself,

  965. tomorrow is

  966. going to be

  967. a better

  968. day,

  969. tomorrow I'm

  970. going to

  971. get up at

  972. five o'clock

  973. and read my

  974. Bible,

  975. tomorrow I'm

  976. going to

  977. try harder.

  978. Well,

  979. friends,

  980. covering up

  981. and making

  982. up,

  983. not only

  984. are they

  985. exhausting

  986. ways to

  987. live,

  988. but they

  989. are deeply

  990. anti-gospel,

  991. anti-Lamb

  992. ways of

  993. living that

  994. rob us of

  995. knowing the

  996. sweetness of

  997. Jesus'

  998. forgiveness

  999. and grace.

  1000. And the

  1001. liberating news

  1002. here,

  1003. because the

  1004. Lamb has

  1005. paid for

  1006. my sin,

  1007. my past

  1008. sin,

  1009. my present

  1010. sin,

  1011. my future

  1012. sin,

  1013. as I

  1014. contemplate

  1015. my dirt,

  1016. the news

  1017. is that I

  1018. don't need

  1019. to pretend

  1020. that I'm

  1021. sorted.

  1022. This

  1023. liberates me

  1024. to hold

  1025. my hands

  1026. up and

  1027. say,

  1028. here is

  1029. a sinner

  1030. who's also

  1031. in need

  1032. of God's

  1033. grace.

  1034. Not a

  1035. once-in-a-lifetime

  1036. decision,

  1037. it's a

  1038. lifetime.

  1039. John Calvin

  1040. called the

  1041. Christian life

  1042. a lifetime

  1043. of repentance.

  1044. It's why

  1045. we do

  1046. what we do

  1047. every Sunday.

  1048. Let me

  1049. just say,

  1050. have you ever

  1051. clocked that?

  1052. There's a lot

  1053. of effort

  1054. goes into

  1055. picking the

  1056. readings and

  1057. the songs

  1058. and everything

  1059. else that

  1060. goes on

  1061. here.

  1062. Why?

  1063. Because all

  1064. of us

  1065. drift.

  1066. What do we

  1067. need as we

  1068. come in here

  1069. on a Sunday?

  1070. And let me

  1071. just say,

  1072. this is why

  1073. church membership

  1074. is so important.

  1075. What do we do

  1076. to one another

  1077. when we gather

  1078. on a Sunday?

  1079. What do we

  1080. remind ourselves

  1081. of?

  1082. What do we

  1083. read about?

  1084. What do we

  1085. celebrate?

  1086. What do we

  1087. sing?

  1088. We sing

  1089. about the

  1090. center.

  1091. we sing

  1092. about the

  1093. lamb who

  1094. was slain

  1095. before the

  1096. foundation of

  1097. the world.

  1098. We sing

  1099. about the

  1100. lamb who

  1101. was slain

  1102. for the

  1103. sins of

  1104. the world.

  1105. We sing

  1106. about the

  1107. lamb who

  1108. has come

  1109. to deal

  1110. with the

  1111. dirt of

  1112. his people.

  1113. We sing

  1114. about the

  1115. lamb who

  1116. takes away

  1117. the sin

  1118. of the

  1119. world.

  1120. So brothers

  1121. and sisters,

  1122. as we

  1123. close,

  1124. is this

  1125. the center?

  1126. Have you

  1127. drifted this

  1128. morning?

  1129. Have you

  1130. drifted?

  1131. come back

  1132. to him.

  1133. Isn't it

  1134. amazing that

  1135. Jesus is

  1136. here?

  1137. The lamb

  1138. who has

  1139. come to

  1140. take away

  1141. the sin

  1142. of the

  1143. world.

  1144. Let's

  1145. pray.

  1146. So

  1147. father, we

  1148. just thank

  1149. you this

  1150. morning for

  1151. John's

  1152. gospel.

  1153. We thank

  1154. you,

  1155. Lord, that

  1156. we have it

  1157. in our

  1158. language.

  1159. We thank

  1160. you,

  1161. father, that

  1162. we can

  1163. understand it.

  1164. We thank

  1165. you most

  1166. of all that

  1167. you are a

  1168. God who

  1169. has revealed

  1170. yourself and

  1171. done something

  1172. to save us

  1173. from our

  1174. deepest

  1175. problem.

  1176. Father, would

  1177. you help us

  1178. this morning as

  1179. a local

  1180. church, as

  1181. a family,

  1182. oh, Lord, to

  1183. help one

  1184. another, keep

  1185. each other's

  1186. eyes on the

  1187. lamb.

  1188. Thank you

  1189. that our

  1190. lives are

  1191. caught up

  1192. with him.

  1193. Thank you

  1194. that his

  1195. death is

  1196. our death.

  1197. Thank you

  1198. that his

  1199. life is

  1200. our life.

  1201. Father, I

  1202. pray that if

  1203. there's any

  1204. here this

  1205. morning who

  1206. don't know

  1207. the lamb,

  1208. oh, Father,

  1209. by your

  1210. spirit, you

  1211. would open

  1212. their eyes

  1213. to see the

  1214. grace and

  1215. truth that

  1216. are to be

  1217. found in

  1218. Jesus Christ.

  1219. Father, we

  1220. thank you for

  1221. this morning.

  1222. Be with us,

  1223. Lord, as we

  1224. sing, as we

  1225. close, and as

  1226. we spend

  1227. time together.

  1228. Oh, Father,

  1229. may we know

  1230. just a sweet

  1231. time of

  1232. knowing your

  1233. peace and your

  1234. greatness together.

  1235. Father, in

  1236. Jesus' name

  1237. we ask.

  1238. Amen.

  1239. Amen.
