  1. Well, good evening folks, as has been mentioned, my name is Alistair, the privilege of being the assistant pastor here at Brunsfield and this evening it is my joy to be leading us through the first installment of 2nd Thessalonians.

  2. I have had a wonderful week in this text and I hope that as we study it together, you will be blessed as well.

  3. Now, according to the World Health Organization, an organization we've got to know a little bit more over the last few years, the official definition of health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being.

  4. Now, maybe when you heard that, you thought, yeah, that's not me at all.

  5. Health isn't always easy to gauge, is it?

  6. And by such a broad definition, it's actually really hard and it's really difficult to gauge our own health as people who maybe aren't medically trained.

  7. And so the website Business Insider spoke to doctors and dieticians and asked them what are some of the general signs to indicate someone is in good health.

  8. Here are just a couple of the things they came up with.

  9. Number one, you eat when you're hungry and you stop when you're full.

  10. Number two, you can make it up two flights of stairs and feel pretty good.

  11. Three, you embrace your full range of emotions.

  12. Four, you can wake up without an alarm clock.

  13. And five, you have all the energy to do all the things you want to do.

  14. Now, if you're like me, you look at that list and you laugh.

  15. But joking aside, we can tell, generally speaking, can't we, when our bodies aren't healthy.

  16. We can feel when things aren't right and we see markers of when we need to think about going to the doctor.

  17. There are signs of what a healthy body looks like.

  18. Well, the same is true for the church, which is described in the Bible as the body of Christ, the body of believers.

  19. So while the church is different from a physical body, in many ways, there are some similarities.

  20. The body has many parts that each work in unison to help you walk and talk and go about your day-to-day lives.

  21. Each part has its role to play.

  22. And the same is true for the church, isn't it?

  23. Each member of the global and local body of Christ has their own part to play and their own gifts given to them by God.

  24. And like our bodies, there are signs of what a healthy church looks like.

  25. In our passage this evening, that's what we're coming to.

  26. We see four different signs of a healthy church.

  27. As we go through this passage together, I want us to think about whether this is the kind of local church we are striving to be.

  28. And whether this is the kind of church culture that we are trying to cultivate as individual members of this church.

  29. But before we dive into the specifics of the first five verses of 2 Thessalonians,

  30. we need to take a bit of a step back and think about the context of this book.

  31. So whenever you come to any book of the Bible, we need to ask ourselves at least three questions.

  32. Who wrote the book?

  33. Who was it written to?

  34. And what was the context of the first audience?

  35. So if you have 2 Thessalonians open in front of you, you'll see from verse 1 that the authors of this letter are Paul, Silas and Timothy.

  36. Paul being the main author.

  37. And they're writing this letter to the Christians in Thessalonica, just at the top left of that map on the screen.

  38. This was one of the largest cities in the northern part of modern day Greece, Macedonia at the time.

  39. And we get to know the context of Thessalonica from Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  40. Now you don't need to turn there, but I'll read a few verses.

  41. Paul and Silas were there and they had quite a successful time.

  42. Acts 17 verses 2 to 4 say this.

    Acts 17:2–4

  43. As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue.

  44. And on three Sabbath days, he reasoned with them from the scriptures,

  45. explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead.

  46. This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah, he said.

  47. Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.

  48. So Paul goes into Thessalonica and preaches Jesus in that city for three weeks.

  49. And within three weeks, a Christian community comes together, both Jews and Gentiles.

  50. People from different backgrounds, different worldviews, different cultures, different social classes,

  51. gathered as one community, united in their love for Jesus and their hope in the gospel.

  52. But a group of Jews were furious at the message of Jesus.

  53. And so they formed a mob and Paul with his companions were forced to leave Thessalonica.

  54. But you can take Paul out of Thessalonica, but you can't take the Thessalonians out of his heart.

  55. See, Paul longs to hear how this church is doing.

  56. And so he sends Timothy to them.

  57. We read about that in 1 Thessalonians chapter 3.

    1 Thessalonians 3 chapter mention

  58. Then he sends the letter of 1 Thessalonians, followed shortly after by 2 Thessalonians.

  59. So it was written by Paul.

  60. It was written to the Thessalonians.

  61. But why?

  62. Well, because this church was being attacked on two sides.

  63. One attack was coming from outside.

  64. These Christians were being persecuted by the world around them.

  65. It had become worse since Paul's first letter to them, just potentially as few as a few months earlier.

  66. Now they weren't just being shunned by society.

  67. They weren't just being looked at with suspicion.

  68. The world around them was looking for ways to physically harm them.

  69. The persecution had amped up.

  70. Paul saw a glimpse of that himself in Acts 17, but it had only gotten worse.

  71. So that's one attack against them.

  72. But the second war front that they had was more subtle, but more dangerous.

  73. And it was coming from within.

  74. There were people in this church who were teaching lies about the second coming of Jesus

  75. and the timing of when and how it would all happen.

  76. These false teachers were making people doubt the truth,

  77. casting doubt on Paul's teaching and contradicting what he said.

  78. And so this whole letter is from the Apostle Paul, who loves these people dearly.

  79. And he's writing to encourage them, to remind them of truth,

  80. and to spur them on to continue growing in light of the return of Jesus Christ, their Lord and Savior.

  81. So that's the letter as a whole.

  82. Why then does Paul start with four signs of a healthy church?

  83. Well, he is encouraging them that this is already happening amongst them,

  84. and he's helping them see that God is at work in their lives,

  85. even in all the difficulties they face.

  86. And so from these verses, we'll see what a healthy church looks like,

  87. and in turn, we should see the kind of church we should be striving to be at Brunsfield Evangelical.

  88. So the first mark of a healthy church is growing faith.

  89. Do you see that in verses one to three?

  90. Growing faith.

  91. Now Thessalonica was a strategically important city for the Roman Empire.

  92. It had a port on the Aegean Sea, and it was located on the Ignatian Road,

  93. a road that stretched just under 700 miles,

  94. connecting tons of little cities across the Roman Empire.

  95. So thousands, if not tens of thousands of sailors, travelers, immigrants,

  96. were making their way in and out of Thessalonica on a regular basis.

  97. Therefore, Thessalonica was a strategic place for gospel growth.

  98. And I think Paul and Silas and Timothy knew that if the gospel took root in that city,

  99. the potential for gospel growth would be amazing.

  100. And so Acts 17 happened.

  101. But then we turn to Paul's second letter to this church,

  102. and look how it begins with me in verse one.

  103. Paul, Silas, and Timothy,

  104. to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  105. Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  106. Now we can often skip over these initial verses of New Testament letters,

  107. but Paul starts by focusing on God.

  108. He's highlighting their connection as fellow believers who all have the shared privilege of calling God their Father.

  109. And he sends them a greeting with grace and peace.

  110. Grace given by God.

  111. That grace results in their relationship with God through Jesus,

  112. and peace is a result of that grace.

  113. Peace with God.

  114. This means that all Christians have been granted access into the family of God,

  115. his church.

  116. And as a family,

  117. we have one Father.

  118. The one who loves us,

  119. who brings us together,

  120. and encourages us to gather with one another and worship Jesus.

  121. Now if we miss this point,

  122. that the whole focus of this letter is God,

  123. and Jesus,

  124. and the gospel,

  125. then we miss the whole letter.

  126. Because this is the foundation.

  127. This is the wonderful union between God and his people through Jesus Christ.

  128. That is the focus.

  129. And from there,

  130. Paul goes on to encourage the church,

  131. doesn't he?

  132. In verse 3,

  133. read that with me.

  134. We ought always to thank God for you,

  135. brothers and sisters,

  136. and rightly so,

  137. because your faith is growing more and more.

  138. Now at first glance,

  139. it seems that Paul is saying

  140. that he feels obliged to give thanks for the Thessalonians.

  141. But you get a sense that

  142. after all Paul has seen,

  143. he just can't help but thank God for them.

  144. It's like he's saying,

  145. I've heard the stories of the oppression you face.

  146. I know the things you go through every single day,

  147. and I cannot help but thank God

  148. because you are growing every single day.

  149. Imagine what an encouragement that would be to this church.

  150. Constantly coming under fire,

  151. being persecuted left, right and centre,

  152. probably wrestling with their doubts,

  153. maybe even thinking,

  154. is this really worth it?

  155. With temptations around every corner,

  156. constant pressures,

  157. doubting whether they could carry on,

  158. Paul says,

  159. we thank God because despite all of that,

  160. you are continuing to grow.

  161. And the growth isn't small either.

  162. They aren't like a flower that you've planted in the spring

  163. and you're unsure whether it's actually growing or not.

  164. Something often grows so slow

  165. that maybe if you're like me,

  166. you're either googling whether you've killed it

  167. or you're taking pictures to see

  168. if it's actually growing at all.

  169. But the ESV translates verse 3,

  170. it translates it a little bit better

  171. and says that the church's faith is growing abundantly.

  172. Their growth is like that of a little child.

  173. One day it's born tiny and defenceless.

  174. It can do nothing by itself.

  175. And yet within the blink of an eye,

  176. that wee boy or wee girl is running around like mad.

  177. Come into church after a Sunday morning service

  178. and you'll see kids running around playing together.

  179. It's wonderful to see and it's crazy

  180. because some of them weren't even born

  181. when we first came to this church five years ago.

  182. And now they're proper little children.

  183. That's like the faith of these Thessalonians.

  184. Despite their circumstances,

  185. they were growing in their faith.

  186. And Paul is recognizing that God is at work

  187. in the lives of these Christians.

  188. Their growth isn't down to Paul.

  189. It isn't down to anything that he has done specially,

  190. but it is down to God and his work.

  191. One mark of a healthy church

  192. is the growing of their faith.

  193. Can we say that about our church?

  194. Can we say that about ourselves as individuals?

  195. It's often really hard to see growth in the moment.

  196. But I would encourage each of you

  197. to think this evening when you get home,

  198. look back over the last three years of your lives.

  199. Do you notice a difference in your knowledge of God?

  200. In your love for him?

  201. In your trust and dependence on him every single day?

  202. Our desire as Christians should be to grow,

  203. to become more like Jesus every day.

  204. That is the work of the Spirit in our lives.

  205. But there are also things that we can do

  206. to help grow our faith.

  207. We can do simple things like reading our Bibles every day.

  208. Actually wrestling with the text,

  209. not just treating it like a tick box exercise

  210. or the daily reading plan done for the day.

  211. Reading God's word and trying to dive deep

  212. and understand more of what he wants to communicate to us.

  213. And marvel at the creator we have and how good he is.

  214. We can gather with our brothers and sisters at church,

  215. yes, on Sunday, but also throughout the week

  216. to read the Bible together and encourage one another.

  217. We can read good Christian materials

  218. that help us grow in our knowledge of God and the Bible.

  219. Now let me challenge us as a church and as individuals.

  220. Are we taking steps of faith?

  221. Trusting in God that he will provide everything we need?

  222. Are we growing in our faith or are we trusting in ourselves?

  223. Relying on God and trusting in his provision on a daily basis

  224. will help grow our faith.

  225. Now these are practical things that we can do to grow our faith,

  226. but the primary way our faith grows

  227. is that we run to God in utter dependence

  228. and ask for him to constantly do a work in our lives.

  229. Our prayers should be that Jesus becomes more precious to us day by day

  230. and that we grow in his likeness

  231. and that the Holy Spirit would transform our hearts.

  232. So the first sign of a healthy church

  233. is that they have growing faith.

  234. The second sign of a healthy church

  235. is increasing love in verse 3.

  236. Increasing love.

  237. Now put yourself in the situation of this church.

  238. Surrounded by danger, attacks coming from outside and within,

  239. where would you find comfort?

  240. Yes, you find comfort in the gospel,

  241. the knowledge that Jesus lived the perfect life,

  242. that he died the death that we deserve on the cross,

  243. and that one day he's coming back.

  244. That is the knowledge that spurs them on and grows their faith.

  245. But they would also want comfort on the day-to-day

  246. as they gather with one another, wouldn't they?

  247. As they express their love for one another in church,

  248. they increase in their love for one another.

  249. Now maybe you've heard it said before

  250. that the church is a hospital for sinners,

  251. not a museum for saints.

  252. When you're ill,

  253. when you have wounds that need tending to,

  254. you go to the hospital,

  255. you go to a doctor,

  256. the people who are medically trained to care for your body.

  257. But where do you go when you're emotionally ruined?

  258. Who are the people you turn to

  259. when you're spiritually struggling?

  260. Who are the people you run to

  261. when you're at your wits end

  262. and you just need comfort?

  263. The answer, I hope,

  264. is the Lord's people.

  265. The church should be

  266. a loving community of believers

  267. who gather around you and care for you

  268. as they point you to Christ.

  269. Look at verse 3.

  270. We ought always to thank God

  271. for you, brothers and sisters,

  272. and rightly so,

  273. because your faith is growing more and more

  274. and the love all of you have

  275. for one another is increasing.

  276. Now this was a church community

  277. who were different from each other,

  278. different backgrounds,

  279. different cultures,

  280. different day-to-day lives.

  281. And yet as they gathered together

  282. to celebrate the Lord,

  283. they grew in their love for one another.

  284. They grew in their care for one another.

  285. Now why is this love

  286. that we have for each other

  287. so vital for the health of a local church?

  288. Well this is what Jesus says about love

  289. in John 13, 34-35.

  290. A new command I give you,

  291. love one another.

  292. As I have loved you,

  293. so you must love one another.

  294. By this everyone will know

  295. that you are my disciples

  296. if you love one another.

  297. Jesus shows us how faith and love work together.

  298. Faith is our response to the gospel,

  299. our response to Jesus' invitation

  300. to become his disciples

  301. and to follow him.

  302. And love is the proof that our faith is real.

  303. Love is faith worked out

  304. in the day-to-day of the Christian life.

  305. Now I don't think it's a coincidence

  306. that so many people have been drawn

  307. to see the good news of Jesus

  308. as beautiful and true

  309. because they've seen disciples

  310. loving one another.

  311. Or they've been recipients

  312. of the sacrificial love of people

  313. born out of their faith in Christ.

  314. An example of this is Rosaria Butterfield.

  315. She's a well-known Christian writer

  316. and speaks a lot about Jesus today.

  317. But she was previously lost

  318. and tangled up in all the things

  319. that this world has to offer.

  320. And the thing that started her journey of faith

  321. was simply that an older Christian couple

  322. invited her round for dinner.

  323. They showed her consistent love

  324. and started reading the Bible

  325. with her after meals

  326. and answering questions.

  327. What changes the lives

  328. of so many broken, hurting people today

  329. as they walk through the doors of churches

  330. and as they walk into homes of Christians?

  331. Well, it's the fact that they receive

  332. a loving, warm welcome

  333. and that they are pointed to the only place

  334. where true and lasting hope is found

  335. in Jesus Christ.

  336. Is that the kind of church that we are?

  337. We are constantly increasing

  338. in our love for one another.

  339. Now, I must say

  340. that a lot of this does happen

  341. and often it goes on behind the scenes.

  342. Sabina and I have personally experienced

  343. the love of this church,

  344. which is one of the reasons

  345. we're finding it so hard

  346. that we're leaving in a couple of months.

  347. When one of the...

  348. We can't become comfortable

  349. where we are in our love.

  350. We need to constantly grow.

  351. We should be striving to increase

  352. our love for one another.

  353. So let me challenge us.

  354. What does this look like

  355. on a Sunday morning?

  356. Are we the people who sit in the pew

  357. expecting to be part of a loving family

  358. but arrive late and leave early?

  359. Or we maybe only come to church

  360. every couple of months

  361. when it's convenient.

  362. Also think about how active you are

  363. in increasing your love

  364. for the whole church.

  365. On a Sunday,

  366. it's so easy to sit in the pew

  367. and do nothing,

  368. speak to no one.

  369. Expect others to come to us

  370. instead of us going to them.

  371. And think about who we speak to on Sundays.

  372. Do we go towards those

  373. who are only like us

  374. or do we go to everyone?

  375. We should be intentionally

  376. approaching people

  377. of different ages and stages

  378. as an expression of our love

  379. for the whole church family.

  380. That is how we grow,

  381. we increase in our love

  382. for one another.

  383. And I think we need to think honestly.

  384. How confident are we

  385. that as a church family,

  386. if someone were in trouble

  387. or if they were stuck

  388. in a situation,

  389. how comfortable would they be

  390. to approach us as a church

  391. and ask for help?

  392. How do we react

  393. to those who come to us

  394. who are struggling in life?

  395. To be a church

  396. that is increasing in love,

  397. we need to pray more

  398. for the people of our church.

  399. Invest time in getting

  400. to know those around us,

  401. having people around for meals,

  402. helping those who struggle,

  403. praying for those who are hurting,

  404. being a shoulder

  405. to cry on on a Sunday

  406. when people are hurting,

  407. being support in times

  408. that are hard

  409. and being a companion

  410. in both good and bad.

  411. All of that will produce in us

  412. a deeper love for one another.

  413. And it will be a witness

  414. to those around us as well

  415. because we're different.

  416. Why else would we all be

  417. in this room tonight?

  418. Different backgrounds,

  419. different cultures,

  420. different languages,

  421. different social classes,

  422. and yet united and bound together

  423. in Jesus

  424. and increasing in love

  425. for one another.

  426. That is the second sign

  427. of a healthy church.

  428. And the third sign

  429. of a healthy church

  430. is perseverance in trials

  431. in verse 4.

  432. Read verse 4 with me.

  433. Therefore,

  434. Paul says,

  435. among God's churches,

  436. we boast about your perseverance

  437. and faith

  438. in all the persecutions

  439. and trials

  440. you are enduring.

  441. So a growing faith

  442. will produce

  443. an increasing love

  444. for those around you

  445. and it will produce

  446. in you

  447. an internal hope

  448. and trust in God

  449. that will help you

  450. stand firm

  451. in the face

  452. of persecutions

  453. and trials.

  454. Paul says

  455. that this church

  456. is an example

  457. of what it means

  458. to persevere

  459. under persecutions

  460. and so he's boasting

  461. about them

  462. to other churches,

  463. using them

  464. as an example,

  465. not boasting

  466. in a negative sense

  467. but giving them credit

  468. where credit is due.

  469. The word used

  470. for persecutions

  471. is quite specific

  472. and it means

  473. that there were people

  474. actively trying

  475. to harm

  476. the Christians.

  477. And the word

  478. for trials

  479. is more general.

  480. It includes

  481. different kinds

  482. of sufferings

  483. and it obviously

  484. includes persecutions

  485. as well.

  486. Now these persecutions

  487. and trials

  488. were producing

  489. in them

  490. more faith

  491. and perseverance.

  492. I remember reading

  493. a few years ago

  494. the story of

  495. Richard Wurmbrand

  496. in a book

  497. called

  498. Tortured for Christ.

  499. If you want a copy

  500. speak to me afterwards.

  501. Richard was a pastor

  502. in Romania

  503. under communist rule.

  504. He was arrested

  505. for preaching

  506. the gospel,

  507. beaten and tortured

  508. for his faith

  509. and yet he refused

  510. to stop preaching

  511. the gospel

  512. to the other prisoners.

  513. So they put him

  514. in isolation

  515. because they couldn't

  516. shut him up.

  517. But even there

  518. prisoners remarked

  519. how he would simply

  520. shout his appeals

  521. for people

  522. to put their trust

  523. in Jesus

  524. from a distance.

  525. Even there

  526. people could hear

  527. him sing songs

  528. of God's goodness

  529. and God's majesty

  530. and they kept

  531. having to change

  532. the prison gods

  533. because they all

  534. wanted to know

  535. more about this

  536. man Jesus.

  537. How could the

  538. Thessalonians

  539. endure such

  540. persecution?

  541. How could

  542. Wurmbrand stand

  543. firm in the face

  544. of torture?

  545. Well they stood

  546. firm because they

  547. viewed their

  548. sufferings in light

  549. of the eternal

  550. hope that they

  551. have in Christ.

  552. Paul knew this

  553. to be true

  554. himself as he

  555. writes in 2

  556. Corinthians 12

  557. 9-10

  558. he says

  559. I will boast

  560. all the more

  561. gladly about

  562. my weaknesses

  563. so that Christ's

  564. power may rest

  565. on me.

  566. That is why

  567. for Christ's

  568. sake I delight

  569. in weaknesses

  570. in insults

  571. in hardships

  572. in persecutions

  573. in difficulties

  574. for when I

  575. am weak

  576. then I am

  577. strong.

  578. this is an

  579. attitude that

  580. sees the

  581. persecution and

  582. trials not

  583. simply as

  584. things to

  585. patiently endure

  586. but as

  587. opportunities to

  588. grow in our

  589. trust and love

  590. for Jesus.

  591. One final

  592. example of this

  593. is the

  594. persecution of

  595. the early

  596. church.

  597. In the

  598. second century

  599. killing Christians

  600. had become a

  601. bit of a sport.

  602. A spectacle for

  603. all to see

  604. branding Christians

  605. as criminals to

  606. be hated

  607. but it wasn't

  608. working.

  609. In fact it was

  610. actually having

  611. the opposite

  612. effect of what

  613. Rome wanted.

  614. People weren't

  615. growing in their

  616. hatred for

  617. Christians but

  618. they were joining

  619. them instead.

  620. Here's what

  621. Tertullian an

  622. early church

  623. father said

  624. We are not a

  625. new philosophy

  626. but a divine

  627. revelation.

  628. That's why you

  629. can't just

  630. exterminate us.

  631. The more you

  632. kill us the

  633. more we are.

  634. The blood of

  635. martyrs is the

  636. seed of the

  637. church because

  638. those who see

  639. us die wonder

  640. why we do.

  641. For we die

  642. like the men

  643. you revere not

  644. like slaves or

  645. criminals and

  646. when they find

  647. out they join

  648. us.

  649. This church is

  650. surrounded by a

  651. storm of

  652. persecution but

  653. instead of being

  654. blown away they

  655. are strengthened by

  656. Christ their

  657. anchor who holds

  658. them firm in

  659. him.

  660. Now are we a

  661. church who

  662. perseveres in

  663. trials?

  664. Suffering

  665. persecution and

  666. trials is never

  667. easy.

  668. The Bible is

  669. clear on that.

  670. We don't make

  671. light of

  672. suffering but

  673. how we respond

  674. matters.

  675. We can either

  676. run away from

  677. suffering and

  678. seek to live a

  679. life of peace

  680. and comfort.

  681. a life where

  682. we don't speak

  683. up for or

  684. about Jesus

  685. or we can

  686. see our

  687. trials in

  688. light of

  689. eternity and

  690. use them to

  691. help us grow

  692. in Christ

  693. likeness.

  694. We may not

  695. be suffering

  696. the blows of

  697. persecution like

  698. other of our

  699. brothers and

  700. sisters are

  701. around the

  702. world but we

  703. are suffering.

  704. we are facing

  705. trials nonetheless

  706. and in those

  707. trials in

  708. whatever form

  709. they come we

  710. must stand firm

  711. in our faith.

  712. See our

  713. trials from an

  714. eternal perspective

  715. and remember that

  716. we have an

  717. anchor and a

  718. hope that is

  719. safe and

  720. secure and his

  721. name is Jesus.

  722. a healthy

  723. church perseveres

  724. in trials.

  725. And the

  726. final sign of

  727. a healthy

  728. church is that

  729. they are counted

  730. worthy in

  731. verse 5.

  732. Read verse 5

  733. with me.

  734. All this Paul

  735. says is evidence

  736. that God's

  737. judgment is

  738. right and as a

  739. result you will

  740. be counted worthy

  741. of the kingdom of

  742. God for which you

  743. are suffering.

  744. Now we have

  745. difficulty today

  746. understanding why

  747. God uses

  748. sufferings and

  749. trials and

  750. pain to

  751. accomplish his

  752. greater purposes.

  753. We look at

  754. suffering mostly

  755. from an earthly

  756. perspective rather

  757. than an eternal

  758. one.

  759. But God can

  760. often use pain

  761. and suffering,

  762. trials and

  763. hardships for us

  764. to grow and

  765. to prepare us

  766. for an eternal

  767. glory and to

  768. produce in us

  769. something that is

  770. far more wonderful

  771. than we can see

  772. in this life.

  773. Paul is reminding

  774. this suffering

  775. church that

  776. their suffering

  777. is under the

  778. hand of a

  779. good God and

  780. that it can be

  781. used as a tool

  782. to push them

  783. into further

  784. dependence on

  785. him.

  786. It's not that

  787. their suffering

  788. makes them worthy

  789. of the kingdom

  790. of God, only

  791. Jesus can make

  792. that possible,

  793. but they are

  794. counted worthy

  795. for the kingdom

  796. of God because

  797. they are persevering

  798. in their sufferings

  799. for the name

  800. of Jesus.

  801. All the

  802. sufferings that

  803. these Christians

  804. were enduring

  805. is evidence

  806. to the watching

  807. world that they

  808. live for something

  809. else, that they

  810. live for someone

  811. else and therefore

  812. as they suffer

  813. and endure,

  814. their faith in

  815. Jesus shines all

  816. the brighter.

  817. Ultimately,

  818. Paul is saying

  819. that all the

  820. suffering you're

  821. going through

  822. right now,

  823. all the suffering

  824. that you're

  825. facing because

  826. of your faith

  827. in Jesus is

  828. producing in

  829. you more

  830. faith and

  831. dependence on

  832. Jesus which

  833. will result in

  834. you arriving

  835. in glory and

  836. hearing those

  837. life-giving words

  838. well done,

  839. good and

  840. faithful servant.

  841. It's similar

  842. to what Paul

  843. said to the

  844. Romans in

  845. Romans 5,

  846. 3-5.

  847. But we also

  848. glory in our

  849. sufferings because

  850. we know that

  851. suffering produces

  852. perseverance.

  853. Perseverance

  854. character and

  855. character hope

  856. and hope does

  857. not put us to

  858. shame because

  859. God's love has

  860. been poured into

  861. our hearts through

  862. the Holy Spirit

  863. who has been

  864. given to us.

  865. From the moment

  866. we become

  867. Christians, God

  868. begins a work in

  869. us by God the

  870. Spirit of shaping

  871. and molding us to

  872. become more like

  873. Jesus and

  874. oftentimes God

  875. can use suffering

  876. to do that.

  877. every Christian

  878. can be certain

  879. that the

  880. suffering they

  881. are going

  882. through for

  883. their faith is

  884. not meaningless

  885. but it is

  886. producing in

  887. them something

  888. far greater and

  889. preparing them for

  890. the eternal glory

  891. that awaits them

  892. in Jesus.

  893. Friends, as you

  894. go through this

  895. life, endure all

  896. things with the

  897. knowledge that you

  898. have a future that

  899. is secure in

  900. Jesus.

  901. Nothing can take

  902. that away.

  903. That through his

  904. death and his

  905. resurrection you

  906. have been reconciled

  907. to God and that

  908. even the sufferings

  909. of living in a

  910. world that hates

  911. God and hates

  912. his people are

  913. preparing you for

  914. the day where you

  915. will meet him face

  916. to face in the

  917. glorious new

  918. creation.

  919. The sign of a

  920. healthy church is

  921. that they are

  922. counted worthy of

  923. suffering for the

  924. name of Jesus.

  925. Jesus.

  926. I think back to

  927. where we started

  928. off with some

  929. doctors and

  930. dieticians who've

  931. come up with

  932. different signs that

  933. point to the

  934. general health of

  935. an individual.

  936. The Bible, in the

  937. Bible we see signs of

  938. what a healthy church

  939. looks like and that

  940. is a picture we

  941. should be striving

  942. for as a local

  943. church family.

  944. We should be

  945. looking to see

  946. these signs in our

  947. own lives as

  948. individuals too.

  949. Let us strive to

  950. be a church and

  951. a Christian who

  952. is growing in

  953. faith, who is

  954. increasing in

  955. love, who is

  956. persevering in

  957. trials and who

  958. will one day be

  959. counted worthy as

  960. they, as we enter

  961. into eternity with

  962. God our Father.

  963. Let's pray.

  964. Heavenly Father, we

  965. thank you for this

  966. letter of 2nd

  967. Thessalonians.

  968. Thank you for all

  969. the things that it

  970. will teach us, for

  971. all the challenges

  972. that it will bring.

  973. And Father, I pray

  974. that as we go

  975. through this series

  976. that you would be

  977. lifted up, that you

  978. would get all the

  979. glory and that it

  980. would help us to be

  981. better disciples and

  982. a better church that

  983. constantly points

  984. people to you.

  985. Jesus, would you

  986. help our faith grow?

  987. Would you help us

  988. love one another more?

  989. Would you help us

  990. persevere in trials?

  991. And would you give

  992. us hope, certain

  993. definite hope, that

  994. on that day we will

  995. see you and we will

  996. be counted as worthy

  997. because you have kept

  998. us by your

  999. faithfulness.

1000. We pray this for the

  1001. upbuilding of your

1002. kingdom and in the name

  1003. of our Lord Jesus

  1004. Christ.

  1005. Amen.

  1006. Amen.

  1007. Amen.

  1008. Amen.

  1009. Amen.

  1010. Amen.

  1011. Amen.

  1012. Amen.

  1013. Amen.

  1014. Amen.

  1015. Amen.

  1016. Amen.
