  1. Folks, let me encourage you to do everything that you can, and I mean that, to have John chapter 4 open in front of you.

    John 4 chapter mention

  2. I don't think this is any exaggeration for me to say.

  3. I think this, these verses, are some of my favourite in the whole Bible.

  4. And I'd love for you to see what I've seen this week in them, how glorious they are.

  5. So please get John chapter 4 open in front of you.

    John 4 chapter mention

  6. Anyone ever read Vanity Fair?

  7. Talk about the magazine.

  8. Hans, we've heard of Vanity Fair.

  9. Right, we've heard of it.

  10. Okay, so, good, good.

  11. Madonna did an interview with Vanity Fair in 1991.

  12. An interviewer asked her how she was coping with her newfound musical stardom in 1991, right?

  13. What do you make of what she said?

  14. Here's what she said.

  15. My drive in life comes from this horrible fear of being mediocre.

  16. I still have to prove that I'm somebody.

  17. My struggle has never ended, and it probably never will.

  18. So there's Madonna talking in 1991.

  19. In her words, she longs to be somebody.

  20. And I take it she's talking about that deep longing inside of her

  21. that yearns to be fully known,

  22. fully loved,

  23. and fully satisfied,

  24. and for that combination of those feelings to be in her life and to stay.

  25. So every human being on this planet longs for, right?

  26. To be fully known,

  27. fully loved,

  28. fully satisfied.

  29. And the problem is that we as human beings go searching for this in all kinds of places in our lives.

  30. Job promotions,

  31. house extensions,

  32. romantic relationships,

  33. online purchases,

  34. social media likes.

  35. And is it not true, friends,

  36. that like Madonna,

  37. we find that these things can never quite give us the thing that we're grasping for,

  38. to be a somebody.

  39. I love what C.S. Lewis once said.

  40. He said,

  41. if I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy,

  42. the only logical explanation for it is that I was made for another world.

  43. And you see,

  44. into this human satisfaction vacuum,

  45. the astounding claim that Jesus makes in John chapter 4

    John 4 chapter mention

  46. is that only he can give us what we're searching for.

  47. Right?

  48. Only he can do this in our lives.

  49. And the added wonder of what Jesus says is that he offers it in conversation with a woman who society has concluded is not a somebody.

  50. Society has concluded that she is a nobody.

  51. Now,

  52. if Jesus had a PR manager,

  53. and I've checked,

  54. and I don't think he did,

  55. someone helping him with his public image,

  56. somebody with the job of trying to help him climb the opinion polls,

  57. they would be freaking out at this encounter we read about in John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  58. Because it defies the social etiquette and the social expectations of the day.

  59. And what we're going to see here as we journey through this is that Jesus tears up and throws out the boundaries playbook

  60. in just about every conceivable way as he lovingly goes all out in his pursuit of the heart of this woman.

  61. Let's see these, will we?

  62. Here's what he does.

  63. First of all,

  64. he defies the racial boundary.

  65. Verse 4.

  66. Do you see where he is?

  67. Where's he going?

  68. He's on his way with his disciples back up north to Galilee.

  69. And he's going through this area called Samaria.

  70. An area that as far as the Jews of this day are concerned is enemy territory.

  71. You see,

  72. this is historical tension all to do with the kind of people that are living in Samaria.

  73. Who they are,

  74. how they got there,

  75. what they stand for.

  76. And in the eyes of the Jews of this day,

  77. the people just to the north in Samaria,

  78. aren't thoroughbred.

  79. Right?

  80. They are sellout pick and mix Jews whose religious lives are kind of like looking at a knickerbocker glory ice cream.

  81. Right?

  82. If you can picture that in your head.

  83. All sorts of different worldly colors and religious flavors going on in this one bowl.

  84. One of which is Judaism.

  85. It's all kind of mixed up.

  86. And no one really kind of knows what's going on.

  87. All sort of things going on.

  88. And the Jews look at it and they say,

  89. knickerbocker glory.

  90. They are.

  91. But we are pure vanilla.

  92. Right?

  93. We're thoroughbred.

  94. We are the Jewish people.

  95. These guys aren't.

  96. Their very existence makes a mockery of who we are and what we stand for.

  97. And if you look at verse nine,

  98. it's not just my opinion on that.

  99. John tells us at the day,

  100. do you see?

  101. These two groups of people don't mix.

  102. They don't associate.

  103. It goes both ways.

  104. Jews hate Samaritans.

  105. Samaritans hate Jews.

  106. So what Jesus is doing here,

  107. we've got to understand.

  108. It's like a Russian man popping up in a cafe in Kiev and saying,

  109. can I have a latte, please?

  110. This is hot and this is tense,

  111. what Jesus is doing here.

  112. He's defying the racial playbook

  113. and he's defying the gender playbook.

  114. Here is a man talking with a woman.

  115. Here is a rabbi,

  116. a religious teacher,

  117. who in this day to be talking with a woman

  118. would be seen as a waste of his time.

  119. That's why verse 27,

  120. if you cast your eyes beyond our verses this morning in this chapter,

  121. the disciples return to this scene

  122. and they are surprised.

  123. Do you see that word?

  124. As they see Jesus talking to this woman,

  125. they are surprised.

  126. Our English word,

  127. I don't think quite captures the strength of it here.

  128. In Greek,

  129. it's more like they were absolutely gobsmacked

  130. that Jesus was talking with this woman.

  131. He's ripping up the gender playbook

  132. and he's ripping up the social one as well.

  133. Verse 6,

  134. when does Jesus stop for a drink?

  135. And I love all these details that John gives us.

  136. When did he stop for a drink?

  137. Thirsty from the walk as he would have been

  138. as a human being.

  139. He stops at noon.

  140. You see,

  141. he stops at the hottest part of the day

  142. in search for a drink.

  143. Now, have you ever been in a hot country?

  144. You know that feeling.

  145. You plan your day around the morning

  146. and the evening

  147. because in the afternoon,

  148. when it comes,

  149. it's factor 50 on

  150. and you're hunting for the shade.

  151. You're staying inside.

  152. It's what we did when we were in Louisville.

  153. We planned our day around the morning

  154. and Aircon was our friend in the afternoon.

  155. And in this day,

  156. women would go in groups to the well

  157. to get water first thing.

  158. Makes sense, doesn't it?

  159. You wouldn't go at the height of the day.

  160. You would go first thing.

  161. And yet,

  162. here is our woman

  163. on her own,

  164. do you see,

  165. at the height of the day.

  166. Which tells us,

  167. what about her

  168. in terms of how she's viewed

  169. in her community?

  170. It tells us

  171. that she has been shunned.

  172. And it tells us

  173. that her life

  174. is now about

  175. not showing face

  176. in public.

  177. Lest anybody

  178. see you.

  179. Should we be around today?

  180. This would be

  181. baseball cap on,

  182. hoodie up,

  183. shades on,

  184. doing her shopping

  185. in the 24-7 Asda at midnight.

  186. Desperate to get in and out

  187. before anyone clocks

  188. that I'm here.

  189. What is it we would say

  190. if she were around today?

  191. This is somebody

  192. who we wouldn't touch

  193. with a barge pole.

  194. Just don't want to go near her.

  195. Don't associate with her.

  196. Jesus is ripping up

  197. the social playbook.

  198. And,

  199. he's ripping up

  200. the moral one as well.

  201. And this is maybe

  202. where we'll slow down

  203. just a little bit

  204. and think about

  205. what we're told

  206. about this woman.

  207. because as Jesus

  208. meets her,

  209. do you see

  210. how he brings up

  211. and deliberately so

  212. the most painful

  213. feature

  214. of her life

  215. to date?

  216. That's why I never

  217. think

  218. Jesus would make

  219. a good

  220. Brit.

  221. He doesn't do

  222. small talk,

  223. does he?

  224. He goes straight

  225. for the issue.

  226. The Lamb of God

  227. goes for the elephant

  228. in the room.

  229. The very reason

  230. that this woman

  231. is being shunned.

  232. And he does it.

  233. We need to understand

  234. this as we think

  235. about its application

  236. to our own lives.

  237. One of the ways

  238. is that Jesus

  239. does this not

  240. to shame her.

  241. He does it

  242. not to

  243. out her.

  244. He does it

  245. to win her.

  246. This is the woman

  247. that he's come

  248. for.

  249. And this is the

  250. God who knows

  251. her and sees

  252. her as a good

  253. physician,

  254. desperate to treat

  255. the wound

  256. with his scalpel

  257. of grace.

  258. Here is the God

  259. of the psalmist

  260. who would bend

  261. near and knows

  262. the brokenhearted.

  263. Here is the God

  264. who is close to

  265. those who call

  266. on him.

  267. And here he is,

  268. verse 16,

  269. and what does he say?

  270. And this is it.

  271. What does he say?

  272. And it kind of

  273. comes out of left field,

  274. really.

  275. Trying to get my

  276. head around that

  277. all week.

  278. How did it go

  279. from water to husband?

  280. How did it get there?

  281. What does he say?

  282. He says,

  283. go and get your husband.

  284. And she replies,

  285. verse 17,

  286. I have no husband.

  287. You're right,

  288. says Jesus.

  289. You have had

  290. five husbands

  291. and the man

  292. that you're now with

  293. is not your husband.

  294. Jesus,

  295. fully man,

  296. fully knowing God.

  297. Now listen,

  298. we need to resist

  299. the temptation

  300. to think of this woman

  301. like some kind of character

  302. from Sex and the City

  303. or Friends.

  304. Like those sitcoms

  305. that we used to watch

  306. in the 90s.

  307. She is this free

  308. and modern,

  309. independent woman

  310. who's casually

  311. slipping out seamlessly

  312. from one relationship

  313. to another.

  314. Right?

  315. No right,

  316. no wrong,

  317. no rules for me.

  318. This is this woman.

  319. No,

  320. that is to read her

  321. through 21st century

  322. Western eyes.

  323. But she's a first century

  324. Middle Eastern woman.

  325. She's had five husbands

  326. who are no longer

  327. her husband.

  328. And the only way

  329. that that can happen

  330. in this day

  331. as I understand it

  332. is through one of two ways.

  333. It's through death

  334. or it's through divorce.

  335. Friends,

  336. personally,

  337. I know that for many of us

  338. that words will bring

  339. to our minds

  340. all sorts of painful memories.

  341. And I'm so sorry.

  342. But perhaps in particular

  343. this morning,

  344. you need to see

  345. how Jesus loves this woman

  346. for whom that has been

  347. the heartbreaking reality

  348. of her life.

  349. for when it comes to divorce,

  350. as I understand it

  351. in this day culturally,

  352. the expectation

  353. is that the power

  354. to initiate that

  355. is not on her side.

  356. It's on the man's side.

  357. So could it be

  358. that this woman

  359. has been on the receiving

  360. end of divorce

  361. five times?

  362. Could it be

  363. that she's been used

  364. and treated like trash

  365. by men

  366. for what must have felt

  367. like her entire life?

  368. Could it be

  369. that divorce

  370. has only got easier

  371. for him

  372. and more painful

  373. for her

  374. each time it happens

  375. as each husband

  376. comes and goes?

  377. And could it be

  378. that the guy

  379. that she's with now

  380. will not marry her

  381. because he doesn't want

  382. the baggage

  383. that goes with her

  384. and the baggage

  385. that goes with that?

  386. And you bring

  387. all that together.

  388. When she says,

  389. I have no husband,

  390. friends,

  391. our hearts should break

  392. for this woman.

  393. And then our hearts

  394. should be captivated

  395. by how the God

  396. of the universe

  397. come down in human flesh

  398. treats this woman.

  399. As Jesus

  400. and this woman

  401. meet,

  402. friends,

  403. there are alarm bells

  404. going off all over

  405. the shop with this one.

  406. Racial,

  407. gender,

  408. social,

  409. moral.

  410. She is the last person

  411. conceivably

  412. on planet earth

  413. that you'd expect

  414. and you'd be advising

  415. Jesus to associate with

  416. and yet,

  417. and yet,

  418. friends,

  419. he wonderfully does.

  420. And I love

  421. John chapter four.

  422. Do you know why?

  423. Because I think

  424. there's a big banner

  425. that says right above it,

  426. welcome to the

  427. dignity revolution.

  428. welcome to the sexual

  429. revolution.

  430. As Jesus steps in,

  431. maybe even the first man

  432. in this woman's life

  433. interested in her,

  434. not because of what he thinks

  435. he can get from her,

  436. but steps in longing to know her

  437. because of what he can

  438. give to her.

  439. As the one who knows

  440. all things about this woman,

  441. and rather than that knowledge

  442. repelling him from her,

  443. do you see how the knowledge

  444. of that,

  445. it almost as if it wonderfully

  446. draws him to her.

  447. Oh, I love that Nicodemus,

  448. Israel's finest,

  449. and we're trying to

  450. see this in the context

  451. of John,

  452. Nicodemus,

  453. Israel's finest

  454. back at chapter three

  455. came looking for Jesus

  456. here in wonderful

  457. and beautiful

  458. and powerful contrast.

  459. Jesus initiates

  460. the loving pursuit

  461. of Sumeria's worst.

  462. As author Rebecca McLaughlin

  463. so powerfully puts it

  464. in her wonderful

  465. little book,

  466. Jesus Through the Eyes

  467. of Woman,

  468. we see Jesus

  469. as a magnet

  470. for those who feel

  471. like scraps of human metal

  472. on life's junk heap,

  473. picking up the broken

  474. and abused

  475. and drawing them

  476. into his kingdom

  477. of love.

  478. This is who Jesus

  479. is.

  480. And he's still

  481. this Jesus today.

  482. And friends,

  483. what does he offer

  484. her?

  485. He offers her two things.

  486. He offers her,

  487. first of all,

  488. to be the perfect

  489. husband.

  490. Her perfect husband.

  491. And I'd never seen

  492. this before

  493. until probably

  494. about six months ago

  495. when we were planning

  496. and thinking about

  497. this series.

  498. Come with me

  499. and see this.

  500. What number man

  501. is Jesus

  502. on the scene

  503. of this woman's life?

  504. You have a bit

  505. of maths this morning.

  506. What number man

  507. is he

  508. on the scene

  509. in this woman's life?

  510. She has had

  511. five husbands

  512. and the man

  513. that she's with

  514. is not her husband.

  515. Which means

  516. that Jesus

  517. steps on the scene

  518. of this woman's life

  519. as the what number

  520. of man?

  521. The seventh man.

  522. Seven,

  523. that number

  524. in the Bible

  525. that represents

  526. and symbolizes

  527. God's perfection.

  528. Jesus steps

  529. on the scene

  530. of this woman's life

  531. as the seventh man.

  532. Where all before

  533. her previous husbands

  534. had failed her.

  535. Jesus has come.

  536. He knows her.

  537. He's come to win her

  538. and to draw her in

  539. to be part of his bride.

  540. Not through cheap grace,

  541. but through the thing

  542. that every husband

  543. was called to be

  544. and at Jesus

  545. as he personifies this

  546. he calls every single husband

  547. ever since

  548. as we focus on him

  549. to be.

  550. He has come

  551. to win her

  552. through costly

  553. sacrifice.

  554. Jesus will own

  555. her shame.

  556. Jesus will pay

  557. the price

  558. for her mistakes.

  559. Jesus will take

  560. her sins

  561. on himself.

  562. Jesus will bear

  563. the punishment

  564. of the condemnation

  565. that stands over her

  566. if you flick back

  567. to chapter 3

  568. where the world

  569. labels her

  570. damaged goods.

  571. Jesus goes

  572. to the cross

  573. to make her

  574. pure and spotless.

  575. As he dies

  576. and he sheds

  577. his precious blood

  578. on the cross

  579. for her.

  580. The woman

  581. that society

  582. said

  583. was not worth it.

  584. Jesus says

  585. yes she is.

  586. And he says

  587. to this woman

  588. and get this

  589. friends,

  590. daughter

  591. no longer

  592. do your scars

  593. define you.

  594. Come to me

  595. and let my scars

  596. define you.

  597. That's what he offers

  598. us this morning.

  599. life

  600. in his

  601. scars.

  602. That's what she

  603. gets in him

  604. and in turn

  605. by her faith

  606. in him.

  607. That's what Jesus

  608. gives her.

  609. She comes to share

  610. in his perfect

  611. righteousness

  612. and life

  613. and to have

  614. Jesus'

  615. father

  616. as her

  617. father.

  618. Friends,

  619. who's getting

  620. the better deal

  621. here?

  622. Is not the

  623. gospel wonderfully

  624. magnificent?

  625. This is what's

  626. held out to us

  627. this morning

  628. in Christ

  629. as Jesus

  630. embodies the

  631. words that we

  632. hear the groom

  633. vow at weddings.

  634. It's always

  635. one of my

  636. favorite parts.

  637. All that I am

  638. I give to you

  639. and all that I

  640. have I share

  641. with you.

  642. And it's why

  643. I always think

  644. that it's so

  645. profound in our

  646. culture that

  647. traditionally when

  648. a man and a

  649. woman get married

  650. the woman takes

  651. the man's

  652. name as if

  653. to say

  654. everything about

  655. her life is

  656. now caught up

  657. in his name

  658. and who he

  659. is.

  660. And of course

  661. our marriages

  662. friends are

  663. temporary.

  664. They're pointing

  665. to the great

  666. marriage that

  667. is the reality.

  668. That's exactly

  669. what it is to

  670. be the bride

  671. of Christ.

  672. If you're a

  673. Christian here

  674. this morning

  675. your life is

  676. caught up in

  677. his name.

  678. Friends,

  679. the gospel is

  680. astonishingly

  681. good news.

  682. Lord,

  683. to that hymn

  684. that many of

  685. us would have

  686. grown up singing,

  687. I love it,

  688. blessed assurance

  689. Jesus is mine.

  690. Oh,

  691. what a foretaste

  692. of glory divine,

  693. heir of salvation,

  694. purchase of God's,

  695. born of his spirit,

  696. washed in his blood.

  697. Those are things

  698. that are true of you.

  699. See,

  700. Christ offers to be

  701. to this nobody.

  702. He offers to be

  703. her perfect husband.

  704. And he offers

  705. to give her

  706. life,

  707. deep life

  708. satisfaction.

  709. Verse 10,

  710. taking the language

  711. here,

  712. he offers to give

  713. to this woman

  714. living water.

  715. Living water.

  716. Verse 14,

  717. what does he say?

  718. The water I give

  719. you will be like

  720. a spring of water

  721. that wells up

  722. into eternal life.

  723. Of course,

  724. as she goes back

  725. and forth

  726. and back and forth

  727. and back and forth

  728. and back and forth

  729. and back and forth

  730. from her home

  731. to this well

  732. every day.

  733. Jesus taps into

  734. the reality

  735. of her every day.

  736. Home with a bucket,

  737. water runs out,

  738. thirsty again,

  739. back you go,

  740. caught up in this

  741. endless Middle Eastern

  742. cycle of always

  743. being thirsty,

  744. never quite

  745. having enough.

  746. Jesus taps into it

  747. to get her

  748. to understand

  749. the nature

  750. of the restless,

  751. always searching

  752. but never arriving

  753. spirit that human

  754. beings have

  755. and he says,

  756. I can give you

  757. and I take it

  758. by his spirit

  759. in us,

  760. drawing us

  761. to him,

  762. a spring in your

  763. heart

  764. whereby your thirst,

  765. the thirst of your

  766. soul can be quenched

  767. and you need go

  768. searching in life

  769. no more.

  770. No more.

  771. Well friends,

  772. that takes us

  773. to the first

  774. of the two questions

  775. I think we need

  776. to ask ourselves

  777. as we take in

  778. what Jesus is saying

  779. here and it'll be

  780. really quick,

  781. okay?

  782. As we think about

  783. the claim that he

  784. makes,

  785. friends,

  786. what's going

  787. into our systems?

  788. Just think about it,

  789. just take the language

  790. he's using,

  791. are we drinking

  792. from the fountain

  793. of him

  794. that he talks

  795. about here?

  796. What's going

  797. into our systems?

  798. In 1901,

  799. it was an American

  800. doctor called

  801. John Harvey

  802. Gerdner

  803. who coined

  804. the term

  805. New Yorkitis

  806. because he

  807. watched the way

  808. his fellow

  809. New Yorkers

  810. were living

  811. their right

  812. lives.

  813. They were running

  814. around from

  815. thing to thing

  816. and how he

  817. perceived in so

  818. many of them

  819. because of the

  820. way that they

  821. were living,

  822. they were producing

  823. edginess and

  824. impulsiveness

  825. and that was

  826. 1901.

  827. That's the world

  828. that we're living

  829. in, isn't it?

  830. That's the

  831. places, the

  832. things that the

  833. world offers

  834. us.

  835. Isn't it

  836. not true that

  837. our world

  838. attaches significance

  839. to a person's

  840. life so often

  841. around their

  842. perceived busyness

  843. and productivity?

  844. Because important

  845. people are busy

  846. people and you're

  847. not important,

  848. you're not busy,

  849. you're not

  850. important.

  851. It's why when

  852. Facebook founder

  853. Mark Zuckerberg

  854. came out,

  855. I can't remember

  856. when it was,

  857. and he talked

  858. about how in

  859. his wardrobe

  860. he's only got

  861. one outfit

  862. because he

  863. doesn't want to

  864. waste time in

  865. the morning

  866. thinking about

  867. what he's going

  868. to wear so he's

  869. got the same

  870. outfit all the

  871. way through.

  872. We hear that,

  873. we love it

  874. because we think

  875. yes, he's

  876. important, he's

  877. busy, that's

  878. what we need

  879. to do.

  880. And yet into

  881. our world that

  882. says your

  883. significance is

  884. tied up with

  885. what you do,

  886. Jesus steps

  887. in and he

  888. saves us out

  889. of it and

  890. says come and

  891. find rest,

  892. little child

  893. in who I

  894. am today

  895. and who

  896. you are

  897. because you're

  898. in me.

  899. Do you find

  900. that in your

  901. heart all the

  902. time as we

  903. live our lives

  904. in this world

  905. running about

  906. from thing to

  907. thing?

  908. It's probably

  909. the biggest

  910. thing that I

  911. was convicted

  912. of in

  913. sabbatical.

  914. Just run

  915. around doing

  916. thing after

  917. thing after

  918. thing after

  919. thing.

  920. And I see

  921. in my heart,

  922. I see what

  923. were the two

  924. things he

  925. said?

  926. Impulsiveness

  927. and edginess.

  928. I see it all

  929. the time.

  930. And Jesus

  931. calls us to

  932. be fully

  933. satisfied in

  934. him.

  935. Do not let

  936. the world

  937. define who

  938. you are,

  939. but to be

  940. fully complete

  941. in him.

  942. Friends,

  943. are we

  944. drinking from

  945. the water

  946. he gives

  947. us?

  948. And that's

  949. a big

  950. challenge of

  951. this passage,

  952. isn't it,

  953. to us?

  954. Are we

  955. drinking from

  956. the water

  957. he gives

  958. us?

  959. Are we

  960. carving out

  961. time to

  962. listen to

  963. his voice

  964. as we

  965. open our

  966. Bibles and

  967. finding rest

  968. for our

  969. souls in

  970. the places

  971. that Jesus

  972. tells us

  973. we'll find

  974. rest?

  975. And it's

  976. why our

  977. gatherings,

  978. as we

  979. gather together

  980. on a

  981. Sunday,

  982. they are

  983. soaked in

  984. scripture.

  985. Because these

  986. are the

  987. words of

  988. eternal life.

  989. These are

  990. places where

  991. we want to

  992. drink as we

  993. feast on

  994. God's word,

  995. get it into

  996. our systems.

  997. Friends,

  998. are you

  999. soaking your

  1000. soul and

  1001. drinking deep

  1002. from the

  1003. fountain that

  1004. Jesus calls

  1005. us to drink

  1006. from?

  1007. Getting these

  1008. things into

  1009. our system and

  1010. delighting ourselves

  1011. in his

  1012. promises.

  1013. You know,

  1014. I've got a

  1015. good friend

  1016. called Pete

  1017. who I see

  1018. every day on

  1019. the school

  1020. run.

  1021. And I

  1022. clocked a few

  1023. weeks ago that

  1024. he's got a

  1025. tattoo.

  1026. Right?

  1027. Strange place,

  1028. strange tattoo.

  1029. It's on his

  1030. inner left thigh

  1031. he's got a

  1032. tattoo.

  1033. And it's of a

  1034. bird.

1035. And I said to him,

  1036. Pete, buddy,

  1037. if you don't mind

  1038. me asking,

  1039. why a bird?

  1040. Of all the

  1041. things that are

  1042. kind of trendy

  1043. just now,

  1044. bird ain't one

  1045. of them.

  1046. And do you

  1047. know what he

  1048. said?

  1049. He said,

  1050. this tattoo

  1051. I've got

  1052. here,

  1053. it's a

  1054. sparrow.

  1055. Because what

  1056. he does,

  1057. he cycles

  1058. everywhere in

  1059. town,

  1060. and I'm

  1061. not a

  1062. cyclist,

  1063. I don't

  1064. know,

  1065. but apparently

  1066. when he

  1067. goes to

  1068. cycle every

  1069. day,

  1070. and I

  1071. see him

  1072. do it,

  1073. he lifts

  1074. up the

  1075. bottom of

  1076. his

  1077. trousers.

  1078. I don't

  1079. know why

  1080. he does

  1081. it,

  1082. he just

  1083. does it,

  1084. he just

  1085. lifts up

  1086. his

  1087. trousers,

  1088. and he

  1089. sees the

  1090. sparrow

  1091. every

  1092. morning.

  1093. And he

  1094. says,

  1095. every morning

  1096. I remind

  1097. myself of

  1098. what Jesus

  1099. said about

  1100. the

  1101. sparrows.

  1102. What did

  1103. he say?

  1104. He says,

  1105. one of

  1106. them falls

  1107. to the

  1108. ground

  1109. without my

  1110. father

  1111. knowing

  1112. about it.

  1113. And because

  1114. that's true,

  1115. how much

  1116. more does

  1117. your father

  1118. know your

  1119. needs?

  1120. How much

  1121. more does

  1122. he care

  1123. for you?

  1124. And he

  1125. says,

  1126. I look

  1127. at it

  1128. every day

  1129. on my

  1130. calf as

  1131. a cycle,

  1132. and it

  1133. reminds me

  1134. what Jesus

  1135. has said

  1136. is true

  1137. of me

  1138. as his

  1139. child.

  1140. Friends,

  1141. every day

  1142. drinking from

  1143. the fountains

  1144. that Jesus

  1145. tells us to

  1146. drink from.

  1147. I'm not

  1148. encouraging you

  1149. to get a

  1150. tattoo,

  1151. it's your

  1152. call,

  1153. right?

  1154. But what

  1155. can we do

  1156. to be getting

  1157. Jesus'

  1158. life-giving

  1159. water into

  1160. our systems?

  1161. What's going

  1162. into our

  1163. systems?

  1164. And second

  1165. of all,

  1166. what's going

  1167. on in our

  1168. hearts?

  1169. In terms

  1170. of how we

  1171. view different

  1172. people in

  1173. our world.

  1174. I love,

  1175. and here's

  1176. what I love,

  1177. and I was

  1178. thinking about

  1179. it this week,

  1180. I love seeing

  1181. the young

  1182. John,

  1183. and I take

  1184. it he's

  1185. writing here

  1186. as an older

  1187. man,

  1188. let's just

  1189. assume that

  1190. as he writes

  1191. this gospel,

  1192. I love

  1193. seeing the

  1194. young

  1195. John in

  1196. action as

  1197. you read

  1198. him in

  1199. the other

  1200. gospels,

  1201. learning the

  1202. discipleship ropes

  1203. from Jesus.

  1204. Now you can

  1205. look at this

  1206. in your own

  1207. time,

  1208. in Luke

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1209. chapter 9,

  1210. if you look

  1211. that one

  1212. up later,

  1213. you see

  1214. Jesus passing

  1215. through Samaria

  1216. with his

  1217. disciples,

  1218. and you see

  1219. Jesus being

  1220. rejected by

  1221. the Samaritans.

  1222. And it's

  1223. John,

  1224. along with his

  1225. brother James,

  1226. who are

  1227. fuming that

  1228. the Samaritans

  1229. have the

  1230. brass neck,

  1231. to turn

  1232. down their

  1233. Messiah.

  1234. How dare

  1235. they?

  1236. What do they

  1237. say?

  1238. If you read

  1239. it up,

  1240. they say,

  1241. Jesus,

  1242. will we

  1243. call fire

  1244. down from

  1245. heaven on

  1246. them,

  1247. and we'll

  1248. watch as

  1249. the Samaritan

  1250. village gets

  1251. singed?

  1252. Genuine

  1253. question.

  1254. There's bitterness

  1255. raging in

  1256. John's heart as

  1257. he thinks about

  1258. this group of

  1259. people.

  1260. There's anger

  1261. as he thinks

  1262. about them.

  1263. It's ugly

  1264. as you see

  1265. John's heart

  1266. in Luke

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1267. chapter 9.

  1268. And yet,

  1269. here he is,

  1270. isn't it not

  1271. incredible,

  1272. writing as an

  1273. older man,

  1274. with the

  1275. spirit of God

  1276. having worked

  1277. away in him

  1278. as he mulls

  1279. deeply on who

  1280. the crucified

  1281. and the risen

  1282. Jesus is,

  1283. and Jesus'

  1284. love for him.

  1285. As John

  1286. writes his

  1287. gospel,

  1288. what conversation

  1289. that Jesus

  1290. has with

  1291. anybody

  1292. gets the

  1293. most air

  1294. time?

  1295. What is the

  1296. one that's

  1297. almost right

  1298. up top as

  1299. if to say

  1300. this is who

  1301. Jesus is?

  1302. It ain't a

  1303. conversation

  1304. with Nicodemus.

  1305. It's a

  1306. conversation

  1307. with this

  1308. Samaritan

  1309. woman.

  1310. Friends,

  1311. I love it.

  1312. It's almost

  1313. as if John

  1314. as he holds

  1315. her up,

  1316. is holding

  1317. his hands

  1318. up and

  1319. saying,

  1320. how wrong

  1321. was I?

  1322. I went

  1323. all anger

  1324. and bitterness,

  1325. but Jesus

  1326. chose compassion

  1327. on the cross

  1328. and his

  1329. way

  1330. wins.

  1331. And his

  1332. way always

  1333. wins as we

  1334. think about

  1335. people in

  1336. our world

  1337. and as we

  1338. take in the

  1339. dignity revolution

  1340. that Jesus

  1341. offers us

  1342. here.

  1343. Friends,

  1344. let me just

  1345. give you a

  1346. case in

  1347. point as

  1348. we close.

  1349. I'll tell you

  1350. about a woman

  1351. who most of

  1352. us in the

  1353. UK,

  1354. back in the

  1355. early 2000s,

  1356. used to

  1357. laugh at.

  1358. And her

  1359. name was

  1360. Jade.

  1361. Jade Goody,

  1362. if that

  1363. name means

  1364. anything to

  1365. you.

  1366. She became

  1367. famous in

  1368. our culture

  1369. as one of

  1370. the first

  1371. contestants ever

  1372. to appear

  1373. in the UK

  1374. version of

  1375. Big Brother.

  1376. And people

  1377. in our world

  1378. used to call

  1379. her the

  1380. blonde

  1381. South London

  1382. Chav.

  1383. That's what

  1384. she was

  1385. nicknamed

  1386. as.

  1387. It's always

  1388. good for a

  1389. funny,

  1390. silly line.

  1391. But she

  1392. made a big

  1393. mistake on

  1394. a celebrity

  1395. edition of

  1396. Big Brother.

  1397. In the

  1398. heat of the

  1399. moment,

  1400. she uttered

  1401. an unacceptable

  1402. racist word

  1403. to another

  1404. contestant,

  1405. and it was

  1406. caught on

  1407. camera.

  1408. And she

  1409. immediately

  1410. apologised to

  1411. the lady,

  1412. and they

  1413. made up.

  1414. But that

  1415. wasn't caught

  1416. on camera.

  1417. Damage was

  1418. done, and

  1419. all of a

  1420. sudden, she

  1421. becomes the

  1422. most hated

  1423. woman in

  1424. Britain,

  1425. spending her

  1426. days trying

  1427. to avoid the

  1428. cameras, avoid

  1429. the spotlight with

  1430. her young

  1431. family.

  1432. And Jade

  1433. developed

  1434. cerebral

  1435. cancer years

  1436. later after

  1437. this, and

  1438. the tragedy

  1439. was that she

  1440. spent a number

  1441. of years

  1442. believing the

  1443. lie that her

  1444. cancer condition

  1445. was punishment

  1446. for what she

  1447. said, in

  1448. her own

  1449. words.

  1450. And she

  1451. died in

  1452. March 2009

  1453. at the age

  1454. of 27.

  1455. By all

  1456. thinking it

  1457. was a tragic

  1458. case.

  1459. But here's

  1460. what I read

  1461. about Jade

  1462. only three or

  1463. four weeks

  1464. ago, and I

  1465. can send

  1466. you the

  1467. link if

  1468. you want

  1469. it.

  1470. Here's what

  1471. I didn't

  1472. know about

  1473. Jade.

  1474. Not so

  1475. long before

  1476. she died,

  1477. she became

  1478. a Christian.

  1479. And at her

  1480. funeral, this

  1481. is what the

  1482. minister of

  1483. the church

  1484. that she

  1485. went to,

  1486. who knew

  1487. her, talked

  1488. about.

  1489. He talked

  1490. about her

  1491. love for

  1492. Luke's

  1493. gospel.

  1494. And he

  1495. said this

  1496. at her

  1497. funeral,

  1498. Jade read

  1499. there how

  1500. Jesus welcomed

  1501. those who

  1502. weren't

  1503. particularly

  1504. religious,

  1505. and how

  1506. Jesus spent

  1507. time with

  1508. people like

  1509. her,

  1510. down-to-earth

  1511. people whose

  1512. lives, like

  1513. Jade's,

  1514. were at

  1515. times flawed

  1516. and difficult,

  1517. but whose

  1518. lives were

  1519. precious to

  1520. God.

  1521. Fully

  1522. known,

  1523. fully loved,

  1524. and I take

  1525. it fully

  1526. loved, fully

  1527. forgiven, and

  1528. fully satisfied

  1529. in who Jesus

  1530. is.

  1531. Friends, this is

  1532. what he offers

  1533. us this

  1534. morning.

  1535. life.

  1536. He offers

  1537. us life.

  1538. And maybe

  1539. just the

  1540. band guys

  1541. could come

  1542. back up if

  1543. you want.

  1544. There's been

  1545. three people

  1546. who've been in

  1547. my mind and

  1548. my heart as

  1549. I've been

  1550. thinking about

  1551. this week,

  1552. as we think

  1553. about responding

  1554. to this.

  1555. The first one

  1556. is if you

  1557. don't know the

  1558. life and love

  1559. that Jesus is

  1560. talking about

  1561. here.

  1562. Friends,

  1563. the invitation

  1564. to you today

  1565. is to respond

  1566. to what Jesus

  1567. has said and

  1568. to come and

  1569. drink from the

  1570. living waters

  1571. that he gives

  1572. us.

  1573. Second of all,

  1574. friends, if you

  1575. hear and you

  1576. feel the pain

  1577. of this woman

  1578. and in some

  1579. level you know

  1580. what it is to

  1581. be at your

  1582. lowest,

  1583. because I want

  1584. you to know

  1585. that Jesus

  1586. knows you,

  1587. he loves you,

  1588. he died for

  1589. you, and

  1590. the same

  1591. invitation he

  1592. makes to

  1593. that woman

  1594. is true for

  1595. you.

  1596. Do not let

  1597. your scars

  1598. define you.

  1599. Come and

  1600. let his

  1601. define you.

  1602. And the

  1603. third group

  1604. of people,

  1605. I love how

  1606. often the

  1607. psalmist would

  1608. talk about

  1609. recalling the

  1610. joy of our

  1611. salvation.

  1612. For others

  1613. of us here

  1614. today, we

  1615. need to

  1616. recall who

  1617. Jesus is,

  1618. rejoice in

  1619. who he is,

  1620. and just

  1621. lap up the

  1622. living waters

  1623. that he gives

  1624. us as we

  1625. take him in.

  1626. So in a

  1627. moment I'm

  1628. just going to

  1629. pray and

  1630. then we're

  1631. going to

  1632. sing two

  1633. songs just

  1634. to give us

  1635. the space and

  1636. time for these

  1637. truths to sink

  1638. in.

  1639. Two songs that

  1640. talk about who

  1641. Jesus is,

  1642. where he is

  1643. now, and the

  1644. fact that one

  1645. day he's coming

  1646. back.

  1647. So let's just be

  1648. silent, and I'm

  1649. going to pray, and

  1650. then we're going to

  1651. stand to sing.

  1652. Heavenly Father,

  1653. thank you that the

  1654. psalmist calls you

  1655. the father of the

  1656. fatherless.

  1657. Thank you that that

  1658. is who you are.

  1659. You are the God

  1660. who welcomes the

  1661. outsider.

  1662. You are the God

  1663. who sent your

  1664. son to die for

  1665. sinners.

  1666. And Father, just

  1667. pray this morning

  1668. for those three

  1669. categories that we've

  1670. thought about.

  1671. Father, for those

  1672. who don't know

  1673. you, Father, for

  1674. those this morning

  1675. for whom this is

  1676. really painful, life

  1677. right now is tough.

1678. And for those of us

  1679. here today, Father,

  1680. that we would recall

  1681. the joy of our

  1682. salvation as we

  1683. think about who

  1684. Jesus is.

  1685. Father, be moving

  1686. amongst us by your

  1687. spirit, I ask and

  1688. pray.

  1689. Father, would you be

  1690. bringing by your

  1691. spirit in us healing

  1692. and assurance

  1693. and knowledge

  1694. and joy

  1695. and that sense

  1696. of peace

  1697. because of who

  1698. he is.

  1699. Father, help this

  1700. week our hearts to

  1701. be fully satisfied

  1702. in Jesus.

  1703. In his name we

  1704. pray.

  1705. Amen.

  1706. Amen.

  1707. Amen.

  1708. Amen.

  1709. Amen.

  1710. Amen.

  1711. Amen.

  1712. Amen.

  1713. Amen.

  1714. Amen.

  1715. Amen.

  1716. Amen.

  1717. Amen.

  1718. Amen.

  1719. Amen.

  1720. Amen.

  1721. Amen.

  1722. Amen.

  1723. Amen.

  1724. Amen.

  1725. Amen.
