  1. Well, thank you very much, Johan, and everyone else who's been involved in the service.

  2. Please do have that Bible passage open in front of you, as we'll be diving in and out of it throughout this evening.

  3. In August 2021, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, and the persecution of Christians absolutely rocketed.

  4. Afghanistan is now the number one country in the world where Christians are persecuted, according to the charity Open Doors.

  5. There were reports early on of Taliban soldiers going door to door, killing Christians and hurting anyone who helped hide them.

  6. Similar stories come out of Iran.

  7. One story I read this week was a couple who had become Christians from a Muslim background,

  8. and they began to attend their underground church network.

  9. But one night, their door was kicked in.

  10. They were arrested, blindfolded, beaten, interrogated, and imprisoned.

  11. Only months later to be released to flee Iran, never to return for fear of their lives.

  12. The persecution in these places is a constant threat.

  13. And those are just the stories we know about.

  14. There are countless, or there will be countless of stories across the world of Christians being persecuted and mistreated for their faith in Jesus.

  15. But it isn't always systematic and physical, is it?

  16. We'll probably all know stories of Christians being rejected for certain jobs and professions in this country for their faith.

  17. Scientists mocked.

  18. Politicians scorned.

  19. Teachers looked at with intrigue to see whether their teaching is right and what conversations they're having with their students.

  20. Or Christians being denied access to venues for a conference because of the message that they will proclaim about Jesus.

  21. Christians being silenced or fired from their jobs for their views that run contrary to the world.

  22. Christians in the West, generally speaking, aren't persecuted physically, but we are certainly not welcomed with open arms.

  23. Whilst our physical well-being might not be in danger, there are plenty of other ways that the world uses to make a stand against Christians and our faith.

  24. With so much going on against Christians, it can be easy to think that God is blind to the persecution and oppression of his people.

  25. But we'll see the truth this evening.

  26. The truth I want us to fix our eyes on is to remember, as we turn to 2 Thessalonians, that God is not blind.

  27. There is not a second of suffering that his people endure for his name that he doesn't see and that doesn't grieve him.

  28. Remember the context of this letter that we looked at last week.

  29. This church in Thessalonica were being persecuted physically.

  30. So how does Paul encourage and build up these Christians who are in a daily battle?

  31. Well, in our passage for tonight, he gives them a signpost.

  32. A signpost of the future that awaits them and awaits those who persecute them.

  33. These Christians were being attacked, attacked from outside and from within.

  34. False teachers inside spreading lies about the return of Jesus.

  35. And so this is a hurting church.

  36. Maybe they thought that God was blind to their suffering.

  37. And so Paul steps in and encourages them by giving them certainty of the future.

  38. The future that awaits the wicked.

  39. Those who are persecuting this church.

  40. Those who reject Jesus.

  41. And the future of Christians.

  42. The future that we await as Jesus returns and the struggles in this life are over.

  43. And my hope is that as we study these two truths together from our passage,

  44. that we'll be encouraged and to stand firm in our faith.

  45. And in the midst of suffering for the name of Jesus,

  46. that we'll be comforted with the knowledge that whatever we face in this life,

  47. God sees it all and he will bring justice.

  48. And if you're here and you're not a Christian this evening,

  49. I hope you see just how important the decision is whether you follow Jesus

  50. or whether you reject him.

  51. So please keep that passage in 2 Thessalonians open in front of you

  52. because we're going to jump about in these verses.

  53. Looking first at the future of the wicked and then the future of the faithful.

  54. So the first thing we see in this passage is the future of the wicked.

  55. In verses 6 and in verses 8 and 9.

  56. The future of the wicked.

  57. Now the world is full of stories of people

  58. who've gotten away with atrocities against others.

  59. You see it on a global level.

  60. Wars being fought out of selfishness of one man or of one nation.

  61. History is full of powerful figures

  62. who were responsible for killing thousands upon thousands of people

  63. and they thought they were untouchable.

  64. It's easy for people to think that they might be above the rules

  65. because they have power,

  66. that they won't suffer any consequences for their actions.

  67. And so they oppress.

  68. They persecute.

  69. They hurt those who don't quite fit with their agenda

  70. or with their goals.

  71. That's the context of the Thessalonian church, isn't it?

  72. These Christians were coming under attack,

  73. suffering at the hands of wicked people.

  74. These Christians were living counter-cultural lives.

  75. They were different.

  76. The people in this church had changed.

  77. They'd started living for Jesus.

  78. And so the community around this church began to hate them.

  79. And they probably thought that they were going to get away with it

  80. because after all,

  81. the church is the minority in this situation.

  82. But look at what Paul says in verse 6.

  83. Read that with me.

  84. God is just.

  85. He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you.

  86. Paul is encouraging these suffering Christians by saying,

  87. don't worry, God is not blind.

  88. He has seen all of your afflictions,

  89. all of your pain,

  90. all of your suffering for his name,

  91. and he will bring justice.

  92. Now the judgment that's predicted here in these verses

  93. is God's ultimate judgment on that final day.

  94. When all of humanity will stand before him.

  95. God is not blind

  96. to the goings-on of this world

  97. and how people treat Christians

  98. and how they respond to God.

  99. And in these verses about God's judgment,

  100. we see three things about God's judgment

  101. that give us a holistic picture

  102. of the future of the wicked

  103. as they will suffer under God's judgment.

  104. The first is that God is just.

  105. Verse 6 says,

  106. God is just.

  107. He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you.

  108. Now God being just isn't a simple characteristic.

  109. of how he acts.

  110. God is the very definition of justice.

  111. It means that he is perfectly righteous

  112. and good in how he responds to his creation.

  113. As human beings, we love justice

  114. and we hate it when injustice rules.

  115. We get angry when we see people

  116. getting away with things they've done wrong.

  117. Committing evil deeds

  118. and yet walking away scot-free.

  119. When we look at atrocities

  120. committed against people,

  121. we rightly cry out for injustice.

  122. We rightly cry out for justice, sorry.

  123. When we think about God being just,

  124. we need to remember that God

  125. is the very standard of what justice is.

  126. Because when we cry out for justice,

  127. it's normally out of a sense

  128. that we've been wronged

  129. and we want revenge.

  130. We were hurt.

  131. And so,

  132. with impatience,

  133. we cry out for justice

  134. and we want it right now.

  135. We don't want it in six months

  136. or a year

  137. or ten years.

  138. We want it now.

  139. Our justice can be a bit like that

  140. of a child

  141. who justifies

  142. punching their brother

  143. because they did it to me first.

  144. But God is not like us.

  145. His punishment

  146. punishment

  147. and judgment

  148. on those who stand against him

  149. isn't revenge.

  150. He doesn't stand in heaven

  151. rubbing his hands

  152. eagerly with joy

  153. waiting for the day

  154. that he can finally get back

  155. at evil people.

  156. But God's judgment

  157. comes out of his desire

  158. for justice.

  159. God has made it clear

  160. how his creation

  161. should and can

  162. live in harmony

  163. with him.

  164. And out of love

  165. throughout history

  166. God has called us

  167. a rebellious humanity

  168. to turn from our sin

  169. and be made right

  170. with him.

  171. But we reject God.

  172. That is our natural

  173. inclination.

  174. The Bible says

  175. in Romans 3.23

  176. that all have sinned

  177. and fall short

  178. of the glory of God.

  179. Elsewhere in Romans

  180. it says

  181. no one is righteous.

  182. No, not one.

  183. God being just

  184. means that something

  185. needed to happen.

  186. There needed

  187. to be judgment.

  188. But God being

  189. perfectly just

  190. made a way

  191. for people to be saved

  192. by putting the judgment

  193. on his son.

  194. So all those

  195. who put their trust

  196. in Jesus

  197. are free

  198. from that judgment.

  199. Because of our sin

  200. all of humanity

  201. is under the sentence

  202. of death

  203. in rebellion

  204. against God

  205. and deserving

  206. of his judgment.

  207. But for the Christian

  208. there is freedom

  209. because Jesus

  210. has paid the price.

  211. Jesus stood

  212. in our place

  213. and we'll come

  214. to celebrate that

  215. later on

  216. in our service

  217. together

  218. but for now

  219. I want us to see

  220. that for God

  221. to be just

  222. all rebellion

  223. and rejection

  224. of him

  225. must be punished.

  226. without justice

  227. sin would run

  228. unchecked

  229. and evil

  230. would reign

  231. but God

  232. being perfectly

  233. just

  234. and perfectly

  235. loving

  236. sets the standard

  237. of what true

  238. justice is.

  239. God's judgment

  240. is just.

  241. And the second

  242. thing

  243. about the future

  244. of the wicked

  245. and God's judgment

  246. is that it's

  247. frightening.

  248. Look at some

  249. of the words

  250. that Paul uses

  251. to describe

  252. God's judgment.

  253. I'll read the words

  254. from the ESV

  255. which is more

  256. of an accurate

  257. translation here.

  258. Verse 6

  259. says that

  260. God will repay

  261. the affliction

  262. with affliction

  263. those who

  264. afflict you.

  265. Verse 8

  266. says that

  267. God will

  268. be revealed

  269. that Jesus

  270. will be revealed

  271. on that final

  272. day in flaming

  273. fire

  274. inflicting

  275. vengeance

  276. on those

  277. who do not

  278. know God.

  279. and verse 9

  280. says that

  281. they will

  282. suffer the

  283. punishment

  284. of eternal

  285. destruction.

  286. Now put

  287. yourself in

  288. the place

  289. of these

  290. Christians

  291. as they

  292. look out

  293. to their

  294. city

  295. and see

  296. people

  297. waiting

  298. to attack

  299. them.

  300. It may

  301. seem

  302. that injustice

  303. has won

  304. but Paul

  305. says that

  306. God will

  307. have the

  308. last word

  309. on that

  310. final day

  311. when he

  312. brings

  313. judgment

  314. on those

  315. who are

  316. afflicting

  317. these

  318. Christians

  319. and those

  320. who do

  321. not know

  322. Jesus.

  323. the words

  324. affliction

  325. vengeance

  326. and destruction

  327. as the

  328. ESV

  329. puts them

  330. they're

  331. frightening

  332. but Paul

  333. doesn't use

  334. them to

  335. scare people

  336. into becoming

  337. Christians.

  338. Paul is

  339. using these

  340. words to

  341. warn those

  342. in the

  343. church

  344. this is a

  345. letter to

  346. a local

  347. church

  348. he's

  349. warning those

  350. in the

  351. church

  352. those

  353. attacking

  354. the church

  355. from inside

  356. that this

  357. is their

  358. future

  359. if they

  360. do not

  361. repent

  362. from their

  363. sin

  364. and follow

  365. Jesus.

  366. Paul is

  367. trying to

  368. encourage

  369. these

  370. hurting

  371. Christians

  372. to remember

  373. that God

  374. is not

  375. blind to

  376. their

  377. suffering

  378. he will

  379. act against

  380. those who

  381. are harming

  382. them

  383. but these

  384. words should

  385. also urge

  386. this church

  387. to go and

  388. tell people

  389. about Jesus

  390. because we

  391. don't want

  392. anyone to

  393. suffer under

  394. the judgment

  395. of God.

  396. God's judgment

  397. is frightening

  398. and the

  399. last thing

  400. about the

  401. future of

  402. the wicked

  403. and God's

  404. judgment

  405. is that it

  406. is final

  407. read verses

  408. 8 to 9

  409. with me

  410. he will

  411. punish those

  412. who do

  413. not know

  414. God and

  415. who do

  416. not obey

  417. the gospel

  418. of our

  419. Lord Jesus

  420. they will

  421. be punished

  422. with everlasting

  423. destruction

  424. and shut out

  425. from the

  426. presence of

  427. the Lord

  428. and from

  429. the glory

  430. of his

  431. might

  432. now Paul

  433. is a

  434. straight

  435. talker

  436. as he

  437. explains

  438. the ultimate

  439. future of

  440. every single

  441. person who

  442. does not

  443. respond in

  444. obedience to

  445. the gospel

  446. of Jesus

  447. for those

  448. who reject

  449. Jesus on

  450. that final

  451. day he

  452. will come

  453. as judge

  454. not as

  455. savior

  456. the question

  457. will be

  458. on that

  459. day how

  460. did you

  461. respond to

  462. Jesus in

  463. this life

  464. if you

  465. responded with

  466. faith and

  467. obedience you

  468. will have a

  469. glorious future

  470. that we will

  471. look at in a

  472. second

  473. but if you

  474. reject Jesus

  475. in this life

  476. and do not

  477. respond in

  478. obedience and

  479. follow him

  480. destruction and

  481. judgment awaits

  482. there will be no

  483. second chances

  484. no do-overs

  485. and so there is

  486. no time to

  487. waste

  488. if you want a

  489. Christian if you

  490. do not know

  491. Jesus if you

  492. are not living

  493. for him then

  494. this future of

  495. judgment is what

  496. awaits you at

  497. the end

  498. an eternal

  499. destruction shut

  500. out from the

  501. presence of

  502. God the place

  503. we often call

  504. hell a place

  505. of eternal

  506. conscious

  507. suffering

  508. now approximately

  509. 178,000 people

  510. die a day

  511. and for many of

  512. them this is the

  513. future that awaits

  514. please consider the

  515. claims of Jesus

  516. tonight and do

  517. not waste another

  518. day on the road

  519. that leads to

  520. hell but put your

  521. trust in Jesus

  522. the Bible describes

  523. those who reject

  524. Jesus as wicked

  525. because we are

  526. all born in sin

  527. and rebellion

  528. against God we

  529. could never do

  530. enough to be

  531. good enough to

  532. be right with God

  533. on our own

  534. we can only be

  535. right with God

  536. through Jesus

  537. and our creator

  538. knows what is

  539. best he wants

  540. people to be

  541. right with him

  542. put your trust in

  543. Jesus and live

  544. for him and

  545. this future that

  546. awaits the wicked

  547. should challenge us

  548. as Christians to

  549. take the gospel to

  550. this world that is

  551. dying and going to

  552. judgment without the

  553. saving knowledge of

  554. Jesus these are

  555. people in our

  556. homes people in

  557. our workplaces

  558. people in our

  559. neighborhoods in our

  560. streets people that

  561. we rub shoulders with

  562. every day we are

  563. the ones with the

  564. message that can

  565. bring hope the

  566. message that

  567. everyone needs to

  568. hear but we need

  569. to share it with

  570. them the message of

  571. the future of the

  572. wicked should also be

  573. a reminder to the

  574. suffering Christian

  575. that God is not

  576. blind he has not

  577. forgotten about or

  578. overlooked your

  579. suffering God is

  580. just as angered at

  581. our pain at the

  582. pain and suffering

  583. inflicted on his

  584. people as you are

  585. in fact God is more

  586. angered by it and it

  587. will not go unpunished

  588. the future of the

  589. wicked the future of

  590. all those who reject

  591. Jesus is God's

  592. judgment which is

  593. just frightening and

  594. final and the second

  595. thing I want us to

  596. see this evening from

  597. this passage is the

  598. future of the

  599. faithful in verses

  600. 6 and 7 and 10 and

  601. 12 the future of the

  602. faithful now in these

  603. verses we see

  604. marvelous truths that

  605. are specific to those

  606. who are suffering for

  607. the name of Jesus and

  608. because of their faith

  609. in him but we also

  610. see awe-inspiring

  611. truths of the reality

  612. of eternity that

  613. awaits every single

  614. Christian so if the

  615. first half of our time

  616. together was the hard

  617. news of the gospel the

  618. news of judgment and

  619. hell this is the good

  620. news forgiveness

  621. redemption perfect union

  622. with God and for us to

  623. share the true gospel the

  624. gospel the apostles preached

  625. the gospel that Jesus

  626. proclaimed then we need

  627. both sides of that coin

  628. both the good news and

  629. the hard news to read

  630. verses 6 to 7 with me

  631. God is just he will pay

  632. back those trouble to

  633. those who trouble you and

  634. give relief to you who are

  635. troubled and to us as

  636. well this will happen when

  637. the Lord Jesus is revealed

  638. from heaven in blazing fire

  639. with his powerful angels

  640. do you see that Paul is

  641. promising these Christians

  642. relief relief from their

  643. oppressors relief from

  644. persecution relief from

  645. suffering in the name of

  646. Jesus

  647. looking at their situation

  648. they probably didn't feel

  649. that that was ever going to

  650. happen

  651. they see the pain they feel

  652. the blow from the enemy

  653. they feel the attack that

  654. hits them on the back

  655. they see the physical

  656. dangers that surround them

  657. every day relief was

  658. probably the last thing

  659. they would have thought

  660. but Paul is inviting them

  661. to fix their eyes on

  662. eternal things on things

  663. that are unseen and to be

  664. comforted and notice how

  665. Paul says they aren't in

  666. alone because he includes

  667. himself in this verse by

  668. saying we too long for this

  669. relief it's the idea of rest

  670. eternal rest and relief from

  671. the enemies of God and in

  672. the presence of God forever

  673. now this doesn't mean that

  674. all of our troubles in this

  675. life will go away it doesn't

  676. mean that there won't be any

  677. rest or relief in this life if

  678. you look throughout church

  679. history there were times of

  680. great persecution against

  681. Christians there were also

  682. times of peace and rest

  683. but can you imagine just how

  684. comforting this message of

  685. this promise of relief would be

  686. to this suffering church

  687. it's a bit like those scenes

  688. from the movies where a little

  689. kid is being pushed around on

  690. the playground by a group of

  691. bullies they're physically

  692. bigger than him they're

  693. stronger and they decide to

  694. combine forces and push the

  695. wee guy to the floor now at this

  696. point in the movies it's

  697. normally where the teacher

  698. jumps in or the hero of the

  699. story comes in

  700. but in that moment the main

  701. concern of the little kid on

  702. the floor is the sheer size of

  703. the bullies towering over him

  704. it's natural to look at the

  705. dangers that are right in front

  706. of your face use the things you

  707. can see but Paul is telling

  708. these Christians don't look at

  709. the bullies don't look at those

  710. oppressing you don't look at your

  711. persecutors in verse 7 Paul

  712. says look at your lives look at

  713. your persecutions from an

  714. eternal perspective and

  715. remember the relief and rest is

  716. yours in Christ there is hope

  717. because on that final day Jesus

  718. will come in blazing fire with his

  719. holy powerful angels as the end of

  720. verse 7 says now both of those

  721. images fire and angels are images

  722. that the Bible uses to describe

  723. judgment and the punishment of

  724. evil

  725. through these Christians will find

  726. relief

  727. Paul is pointing them to their

  728. secure future in Jesus which will

  729. make when God will make his

  730. dwelling place with mankind

  731. those wonderful promises that on

  732. that day there will be no more

  733. crying

  734. no more pain

  735. no more death

  736. no more sin

  737. and we will Christians will live in

  738. the eternal glorious presence of

  739. God

  740. Paul says relief is coming

  741. and then he goes on in verses 10 to

  742. 12 read those with me

  743. on that day he he comes to be

  744. glorified in his holy people and to

  745. be marveled at among all those who

  746. have believed this includes you

  747. because you believed our testimony to

  748. you with this in mind we constantly

  749. pray for you

  750. that our God may make you worthy of

  751. his calling and that by his power he

  752. may bring to fruition your every

  753. desire for goodness and your every

  754. deed prompted by faith

  755. we pray this so that the name of

  756. Jesus Christ Jesus may be glorified in

  757. you and you in him according to the

  758. grace of our God and the Lord Jesus

  759. Christ

  760. these verses speak of it the day that

  761. Jesus will return and the rewards that

  762. all Christians will receive

  763. there are rewards both for the now in

  764. this life and the not yet as we wait

  765. for the future to be materialized

  766. so let's first look at the rewards for

  767. the not yet let's look at verse 10 where

  768. it says on the day he comes to be

  769. glorified in his holy people and to be

  770. marveled at among all those who have

  771. believed this includes you because you

  772. believed our testimony to you

  773. all the difficulties that we face in

  774. this life for the name of Jesus will

  775. fall into the background when we see the

  776. weight of eternal glory that awaits us

  777. it will make our problems disappear in

  778. this life but it will help us fix our

  779. eyes on Jesus even in the darkest of

  780. days the imagery of is of Jesus the king

  781. coming with crowds and crowds of people

  782. watching him it's a little bit like a

  783. bride walking into a church we had it

  784. here just a few months ago the groom

  785. standing up here with the pastor and

  786. then the music starts the crowd are told

  787. to stand for the bridal party and in

  788. comes the bride every single eye is on

  789. her little conversations in the pews

  790. everyone remarking just how beautiful

  791. she looks how wonderful the dress is and

  792. suddenly the minute the groom sees the

  793. bride all the nerves are gone the stress

  794. of the day the stress of preparations

  795. fall away as he stands and looks at his

  796. beautiful bride and on that day when

  797. Jesus comes all of his people will look

  798. at him with awe and marvel at his

  799. splendor and glory and you see what

  800. Paul says verse 10 this includes you

  801. Paul is saying look to the future return

  802. of Jesus and be encouraged be strengthened

  803. in your faith because you know that you

  804. will be with him for eternity

  805. so if that's the not yet element of these

  806. glorious truths then Paul goes on to

  807. speak about what it means for the lives

  808. of Christians every day in verses 11 to

  809. 12 Paul says in light of the truth of

  810. that glorious future from verse 10 that

  811. he constantly prays for the Thessalonian

  812. church for their day to day now what does

  813. he pray verse 11 that our God may make

  814. you worthy of his calling verse 11 that

  815. by his power he may spring to fruition

  816. your every desire for goodness verse 12

  817. that Jesus may be glorified in them

  818. these are things that we can pray for

  819. one another and we should pray for one

  820. another things that we can pray for the

  821. persecuted church and that we can pray

  822. for ourselves as believers now I would

  823. encourage you to take these three things

  824. from verses 11 and 12 and pray for three

  825. Christians this week use the language of

  826. the Bible and pray that God would work in

  827. the lives of those three people who are

  828. close to you and dear to you it will be a

  829. massive encouragement to them text them

  830. when you say you're praying for them as

  831. well

  832. these prayers of Paul show the importance of

  833. how the truth of the Christian faith should

  834. impact our daily lives the future promises of

  835. eternal glory must be met with practical

  836. everyday obedience in the Christian life

  837. as we eagerly long for heaven and look to

  838. the glorious future that awaits every

  839. Christian we need to remember that we still

  840. have work to do here and we must continue to

  841. serve Jesus every day until the day that he

  842. returns or we're called home

  843. now how are we made worthy of our calling as

  844. verse 11 says well we don't live the

  845. Christian life we don't obey God in order

  846. to be saved that's only possible through

  847. Jesus but we live the Christian life the

  848. obedient Christian life out of thankfulness

  849. and praise for what God has already done for

  850. us in Jesus we respond to what God has done

  851. out of thankfulness to him all of the work

  852. that we should be doing as a church and as

  853. individual Christians should be out of a

  854. desire to see God glorified to see Jesus

  855. glorified our faith being worked out as a

  856. declaration of praise to our great God which

  857. in turn will be a witness to the watching world

  858. around us because we're constantly pointing

  859. people to Jesus it's that same attitude of

  860. John the Baptist who in John 3 30 said that

  861. Jesus and his fame must increase and John and

  862. his fame his ministry must decrease because

  863. Jesus is the focus of his life the life of a

  864. Christian is one of humility that points to

  865. Jesus giving him all the glory as we wait for

  866. that wonderful day when we will see him and be

  867. in his presence forever

  868. so brothers and sisters look to the future

  869. that awaits you as a Christian be in awe of

  870. Jesus and how amazing it will be to spend

  871. eternity in his presence and then put that

  872. faith into action every single day

  873. glorify him now as you serve this local

  874. church glorify Jesus as you come alongside one

  875. another and care for each other glorify Jesus as

  876. you take the gospel to the world that needs him

  877. and glorify Jesus by following God's word and

  878. living obedient lives full of growth as we eagerly

  879. await his return and pray these prayers for one

  880. another pray for our persecuted brothers and

  881. sisters across the world live daily for the glory of

  882. God by the power of the spirit and point people to

  883. Christ share the gospel freely because only in

  884. Jesus can hope be found and no one can go too far for

  885. forgiveness no one can out sin God's grace no one is

  886. beyond the love of God but how will they know that if no

  887. one tells them we may not live in Afghanistan with the

  888. Taliban going door-to-door hunting Christians we may

  889. not be in Iran where we need to hide and meet in secret but

  890. we are in a spiritual battle where the world lives and

  891. breathes a hatred for God and for Christians that can and

  892. often does result in persecution and the oppression of

  893. Christians how do we respond to that we need to remember that

  894. God is not blind and we need to remember that there is not a

  895. second of suffering that his people endure for his name that

  896. he doesn't see and that doesn't grieve him we need to remember that

  897. there are two futures the future of the wicked and of judgment and

  898. eternal separation from God in hell and a future of the faithful one of

  899. glorious union with Jesus that will last forever that future should impact how

  900. we live now how we serve one another and how we think about pointing people to

  901. Jesus with every opportunity we have let's pray together

  902. heavenly father we thank you for your word we thank you that you have given us all that we need to

  903. know to obey you all that we need to know to

  904. respond with obedience to the gospel

  905. father this evening we have covered both the hard news and the good news and I pray

  906. that if we need to be unsettled that you would unsettle us

  907. and settle us with the truth of judgment of sin and of a life without you

  908. but father would you also comfort us that there is hope there is life that there is eternal life

  909. in your perfect presence through Jesus Christ

  910. and father would you help us live obediently to the gospel every single day

  911. and point people to Jesus that is what you've created us to do

  912. and help us serve you well by lifting the name of Jesus above every other name

  913. for the upbuilding of your kingdom and for the glory of Christ we pray

  914. amen
