  1. Good morning folks, it's great to see you. My name is Graham. For those who are new this morning, it's just so lovely to have you with us.

  2. Folks, let me invite you to grab your Bibles and come to John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  3. We're back in this story today as Jesus encounters this Samaritan woman.

  4. It was so brilliant to hear last week as we began this chapter, as we were just speaking after the service,

  5. hearing how God has been moving in people's lives as we've encountered His Son in the pages of His Word.

  6. And let's just keep that momentum up. We want to create just a good space for us to have spiritual conversations as God's people.

  7. So this is incredible until we get back into John chapter 4 today.

    John 4 chapter mention

  8. So here's a question for you as we begin. How's your Spanish?

  9. Okay, if it's as good as mine, it's com si com sa.

  10. I've got one word. You can figure that out later, okay?

  11. I've got one word in my lingual locker in Spanish.

  12. And it's the word adoración.

  13. Now, I probably butchered that, but I checked how Google Translate this morning.

  14. And that's what it came back with.

  15. Any Spanish speakers this morning, your native tongue, what does adoración mean?

  16. It means worship.

  17. Okay?

  18. So it's the one word I know in Spanish. Here's how I know it.

  19. I went to a conference in the States over the summer.

  20. 500 people were in attendance at this conference.

  21. Half of them had Spanish as their mother tongue.

  22. The other half had English as their mother tongue.

  23. So the organizers of this conference, what they did is every song that we sang,

  24. every alternate verse of the song was either in English or Spanish.

  25. And they did it deliberately to help us understand two things.

  26. Firstly, that in our different languages, as one, we were worshiping the same God.

  27. And secondly, they were helping us anticipate what it will be like one day in heaven.

  28. Because the scene at the end of the Bible story is a quite remarkable one.

  29. Revelation 7.

  30. There are all of God's people, a great multitude that no one can count,

  31. that God has gathered together in the name of his Son,

  32. in the new heavens and in the new earth,

  33. that God will bring about a place where righteousness reigns,

  34. where death is no more, where pain is no more,

  35. and when God has defeated his enemies.

  36. Where are those people from?

  37. They're from all over the world.

  38. They're from every tribe, every tongue, and every nation.

  39. I think it's one of the most distinctive features about Christianity

  40. when you compare it to the other major religions of the world today.

  41. Generally speaking, Christianity is not geographically tied.

  42. The scene at the end of the Bible is these people are,

  43. God has gathered them from all places of the world,

  44. all ends of the globe, down through the ages.

  45. He's gathered them together.

  46. He's made them one.

  47. This God is in the business of making and gathering worshippers.

  48. And this is why this passage is so exciting.

  49. Because John 4 is the wonderful star of the river

  50. that leads to the ocean that is the scene in Revelation 7.

  51. How is this God going to unite his people from all around the world

  52. under the banner of his Son?

  53. How is he going to do it?

  54. And Jesus continues this conversation with this Samaritan woman.

  55. And as we're to get the earth-shattering worldview changing enormity of this,

  56. we need to get back in her world.

  57. Her world is a world of pain.

  58. Her world is a world of regret.

  59. Her world is a world of hostility.

  60. Her world is a world of division.

  61. Her world is a world of shame.

  62. And as I've mulled on it a bit more this week,

  63. in light of last week,

  64. I wonder whether that's why we don't even know her name.

  65. Okay?

  66. John chapter 3, Nicodemus.

    John 3 chapter mention

  67. Everybody knows that guy's name.

  68. But could it be that no one has bothered to learn hers,

  69. such as society's disgusted who she is?

  70. Well, into her dusty and thirsty world,

  71. Jesus has stepped.

  72. And speaking is the one who knows her better than she knows herself.

  73. He has just offered her, verse 10, come with me in the text.

  74. He has offered her living water.

  75. He has offered her an inner spring of life

  76. that flows from his spirit living inside of her.

  77. This is what Jesus has stepped into her world.

  78. And this is what Jesus has offered her.

  79. And I reckon she perceives something

  80. of what Jesus is offering her.

  81. And she twigs that it's got something to do

  82. with worship.

  83. But in her mind, she thinks,

  84. well, that's all well and good for you and yours.

  85. Right?

  86. Go back down south and offer that to the Jewish people.

  87. Right?

  88. Maybe it's for them.

  89. But it's not for my people.

  90. And it's certainly not for me.

  91. And what Jesus does this morning

  92. is that he redefines what worship is.

  93. The kind that God has both made possible

  94. and delights in.

  95. Folks, we need to get this this morning.

  96. It's brilliant.

  97. Okay?

  98. Here is one thing that Jesus says,

  99. one thing that worship isn't about.

  100. Come with me to verse 20.

  101. Do you see?

  102. It's not about a place.

  103. Here's what she says.

  104. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain.

  105. But you Jews claim that the place

  106. where we must worship is in Jerusalem.

  107. So the Samaritans go to this place

  108. called Mount Gerizim to offer their worship.

  109. That's the monument, sorry,

  110. the mountain that she's referring to.

  111. So as well as many other religious things,

  112. the Samaritans recognised the Pentateuch.

  113. So pent meaning five.

  114. Pentateuch is the first five books

  115. that are in our Old Testaments, right?

  116. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.

  117. The Samaritans recognise and follow the Pentateuch.

  118. And if you read there,

  119. Shechem is the first place

  120. that Abraham offered worship

  121. when he entered the promised land.

  122. So if you're going to drop a pin anywhere,

  123. if you're going to build a temple somewhere,

  124. then that's the place that makes sense to do it.

  125. So they worship at Mount Gerizim.

  126. That's the place where they head.

  127. Meanwhile, talking of temples,

  128. the Jews believe in the rest of the Old Testament.

  129. So they recognise Jerusalem as the place

  130. where God's king would reign

  131. and where God's presence would be.

  132. And we get the story there of David's son Solomon

  133. building the temple.

  134. That's where they worship.

  135. So this is two tribes going to war, right?

  136. She is asking who is right.

  137. Which horse are you backing?

  138. Where is the place where we need to go

  139. to worship on your terms?

  140. And to be honest,

  141. I think this is how we naturally think

  142. as human beings, is it not?

  143. That we have to go to special places

  144. to worship.

  145. The special places hold some kind

  146. of religious significance.

  147. You know, there's been one of the newest trends

  148. in the UK right now

  149. is this thing called champing.

  150. Camping in churches.

  151. So instead of booking a night away on Airbnb,

  152. you can now stay overnight in a church building.

  153. Right?

  154. What's the appeal?

  155. Well, the traditions and surroundings

  156. combined with the silence and solitude

  157. come together,

  158. meaning that you can have a religious experience

  159. as you stay overnight somewhere.

  160. Right?

  161. We think there are special places

  162. where we go to worship.

  163. I remember there was a guy called Rory

  164. who used to come to Basics Bank

  165. back in the days

  166. where we used to have breakfast

  167. in this corner when people used to come.

  168. Came in wearing his flat cap

  169. every time he came on a Friday.

  170. Took off his flat cap when he came in.

  171. Told his mate off every time that he swore

  172. because in his words,

  173. we are in the house of God.

  174. Right?

  175. We think places of worship.

  176. How many of us grew up

  177. coming to church on a Sunday

  178. wearing our Sunday best?

  179. Why?

  180. Because we need to dress smart

  181. if we're going to come into the presence

  182. of a king.

  183. We think places of worship.

  184. And so she's asking Jesus to pick a winner

  185. and surely we and John's readers

  186. would fully expect him

  187. as a devout Jew to pick what?

  188. Pick where?

  189. Jerusalem.

  190. Yeah?

  191. That that would be the horse

  192. that he would back.

  193. And add to that the fact

  194. that this encounter happens where?

  195. Back at verse 5.

  196. If you look at it there,

  197. in fact verse 5,

  198. where is it happening?

  199. It's happening.

  200. This encounter

  201. at Sychar.

  202. Which is literally

  203. the place.

  204. I didn't realize this until Friday

  205. and it's always good to look up

  206. the geography of what the Bible

  207. is telling us.

  208. That place is literally

  209. at the bottom of Mount Gerizim.

  210. So Jesus has walked up

  211. to this place

  212. which is in effect

  213. the very epicenter

  214. of Samaritan religious activity.

  215. What he's done here

  216. is the equivalent

  217. of walking right into Mecca

  218. and saying this is not the place

  219. where you worship.

  220. You can imagine

  221. the local Jews reading this

  222. thinking to themselves

  223. that's right Jesus

  224. you go right over there

  225. and you tell them

  226. that they're wrong.

  227. Right?

  228. We love our boy.

  229. You go and tell them

  230. that's not the place

  231. where they worship.

  232. You tell them

  233. they've got to get down here.

  234. But he says

  235. verse 21

  236. place?

  237. Question mark?

  238. Neither.

  239. And to get

  240. how

  241. he can say

  242. neither

  243. and why

  244. there's one thing

  245. that true worship

  246. isn't about.

  247. We have to listen

  248. to him

  249. tell us

  250. about the two things

  251. that true worship

  252. is about.

  253. And here's the first one.

  254. What is it about

  255. according to Jesus?

  256. It's about

  257. truth.

  258. Now here

  259. Jesus right here

  260. despite not citing

  261. Jerusalem

  262. as the place

  263. of worship

  264. see how he is clear

  265. in his validation

  266. of Jewish

  267. teaching.

  268. Verse 22

  269. what does he say?

  270. He says salvation

  271. is from the Jews.

  272. We worship

  273. what we know.

  274. They are

  275. the Jews

  276. God's chosen vehicle

  277. by which

  278. he would drive

  279. his promised

  280. blessing

  281. to the peoples

  282. of the world.

  283. It's why we need

  284. our Old Testament.

  285. really matters.

  286. All of scripture

  287. is God breathed.

  288. It's why we need

  289. our Old Testament.

  290. And getting into

  291. our systems

  292. the intentions

  293. the promises

  294. and the character

  295. of the God

  296. who has revealed

  297. himself there.

  298. And we need

  299. the Old Testament

  300. to make sense

  301. of Jesus

  302. and flip

  303. we need

  304. Jesus to make sense

  305. of the Old Testament.

  306. He validates

  307. the Jews

  308. and their

  309. heritage

  310. and their teaching.

  311. But notice

  312. when it comes

  313. to worship

  314. what does

  315. Jesus say

  316. verse 24

  317. that God is?

  318. God

  319. is

  320. spirit.

  321. spirit.

  322. I was chatting

  323. to my mum

  324. earlier this week

  325. and she was

  326. telling me

  327. that she went

  328. last week

  329. on her first

  330. ever art class.

  331. Right?

  332. Loving retirement

  333. life is my mum.

  334. And here's what

  335. happened at that

  336. art class

  337. that she found

  338. a bit strange.

  339. She thought

  340. they do

  341. what they normally

  342. do at one of

  343. these classes

  344. you've ever been

  345. to them.

  346. People come

  347. they sit in a

  348. circle

  349. with their

  350. canvases

  351. and the thing

  352. you're meant

  353. to draw

  354. is right in

  355. the middle.

  356. It's kind of

  357. how it goes.

  358. You can see

  359. the object

  360. that you're

  361. painting.

  362. But she said

  363. what was strange

  364. is that when I

  365. got there

  366. there wasn't

  367. anything physical

  368. for me to look

  369. at in the middle.

  370. And the teacher

  371. comes on board

  372. and asks him

  373. to draw a river.

  374. This is what

  375. my mum ended up

  376. drawing,

  377. a river.

  378. She was showing

  379. me it.

  380. But the teacher

  381. said draw a river

  382. but go off

  383. what that river

  384. looks like

  385. in your

  386. imagination.

  387. What does it

  388. look like

  389. in your mind?

  390. How do you

  391. picture it?

  392. You see

  393. friends

  394. when Jesus

  395. is talking

  396. about God

  397. the Father

  398. as spirit

  399. he's saying

  400. that you

  401. cannot visibly

  402. see him.

  403. He has

  404. no form.

  405. You cannot

  406. hope to

  407. contain him.

  408. You cannot

  409. hope to

  410. control him.

  411. You cannot

  412. paint him

  413. because he's

  414. so different

  415. from us.

  416. He's so

  417. high above

  418. the things

  419. of this

  420. earth.

  421. How often

  422. I think

  423. of God

  424. as just

  425. a kind

  426. of me

  427. on my

  428. best day.

  429. No,

  430. no,

  431. no.

  432. He's so

  433. far above

  434. the things

  435. of this

  436. earth.

  437. So far

  438. above

  439. the things

  440. of me.

  441. As the

  442. old hymn

  443. says,

  444. immortal,

  445. invisible,

  446. God only

  447. wise,

  448. in light

  449. and accessible,

  450. hid from

  451. our eyes.

  452. God is

  453. spirit.

  454. spirit.

  455. Which means

  456. that if

  457. God had

  458. not taken

  459. the initiative

  460. in disclosing

  461. himself to

  462. us,

  463. we would

  464. be like

  465. my mum

  466. delving

  467. into our

  468. imaginations,

  469. trying to

  470. understand who

  471. he is,

  472. what he

  473. looks like.

  474. And left

  475. on our

  476. own,

  477. not only

  478. would we

  479. worship him

  480. wrongly,

  481. which is

  482. what the

  483. Bible calls

  484. idolatry,

  485. worshipping a

  486. God in our

  487. image,

  488. according to

  489. our tastes,

  490. which play

  491. out in our

  492. times.

  493. Friends,

  494. we would

  495. never begin

  496. to imagine

  497. how gracious

  498. and good

  499. this God

  500. is left

  501. to our

  502. own

  503. devices.

  504. But it's

  505. as if

  506. Jesus,

  507. as the

  508. one who

  509. is the

  510. image of

  511. the

  512. invisible

  513. God,

  514. has walked

  515. into the

  516. art class,

  517. taken a

  518. seat in

  519. the middle

  520. and said,

  521. do you

  522. want to

  523. know what

  524. God is

  525. like?

  526. Look at

  527. me.

  528. Because

  529. John has

  530. just unveiled

  531. him,

  532. hasn't he?

  533. Right at the

  534. beginning of

  535. the gospel,

  536. Jesus Christ

  537. full of

  538. grace and

  539. truth.

  540. Look at

  541. me,

  542. says Jesus,

  543. and listen

  544. and live

  545. your life

  546. according to

  547. what I

  548. say is

  549. true.

  550. And so

  551. when Jesus

  552. says that

  553. we must

  554. worship the

  555. Father in

  556. truth,

  557. it means

  558. that the

  559. only true

  560. worship of

  561. the Father

  562. is the

  563. worship that

  564. is done

  565. in and

  566. through

  567. him.

  568. He is

  569. back at

  570. chapter 2

  571. verse 21.

  572. He is,

  573. Alistair took

  574. us there a

  575. few weeks

  576. ago,

  577. the new

  578. temple,

  579. the place

  580. where God

  581. dwells.

  582. He is

  583. God come

  584. to dwell

  585. on earth.

  586. It's after

  587. his death

  588. that the

  589. curtain of

  590. the temple

  591. tears in

  592. two,

  593. meaning that

  594. access to

  595. God

  596. where before

  597. denied to

  598. sinful human

  599. beings is

  600. now open

  601. for all

  602. who trust

  603. in him.

  604. Through

  605. what Jesus

  606. has done,

  607. we can

  608. have the

  609. audacity

  610. to address

  611. this holy

  612. God who

  613. is invisible,

  614. but we do

  615. it by trusting

  616. in his son,

  617. looking to

  618. him,

  619. we can call

  620. him

  621. father.

  622. And that's

  623. not just a

  624. theological

  625. hang-up,

  626. okay?

  627. Let me tell

  628. you why that

  629. was really

  630. practically true

  631. for me this

  632. week.

  633. On Thursday

  634. night we

  635. met to

  636. pray for

  637. the McLaren

  638. family on

  639. Zoom and

  640. to pray for

  641. them what

  642. they're going

  643. through just

  644. now.

  645. Friends,

  646. let me ask

  647. you what

  648. came to my

  649. mind with

  650. this passage.

  651. What confidence

  652. do I have?

  653. Do we have

  654. as we met

  655. on that call?

  656. What confidence

  657. do we have

  658. that God

  659. hears our

  660. prayers?

  661. who am I

  662. speaking to

  663. a computer

  664. thinking that

  665. the God of

  666. the universe

  667. who created

  668. all things

  669. would hear

  670. my cry?

  671. What confidence

  672. do we have

  673. that this God

  674. knows?

  675. When you pray

  676. to him,

  677. what confidence

  678. do you have

  679. that he hears?

  680. What confidence

  681. do you have

  682. today that he

  683. loves you?

  684. And however it

  685. plays out

  686. according to

  687. his sovereign

  688. will,

  689. that he

  690. has their

  691. lives in

  692. his good

  693. and sovereign

  694. hands?

  695. What confidence

  696. do we have?

  697. It comes in

  698. that line

  699. that we say

  700. just before

  701. we say

  702. amen at the

  703. end of our

  704. prayers.

  705. What do we

  706. say?

  707. We say

  708. in Jesus

  709. name.

  710. Now that

  711. is not a

  712. spiritual

  713. abracadabra.

  714. That is not

  715. you say those

  716. words and you

  717. will get heard.

  718. It's not that,

  719. okay?

  720. It captures

  721. the very

  722. essence of

  723. the very

  724. reason that

  725. you and

  726. I have

  727. the brass

  728. neck to

  729. say this

  730. God,

  731. I know

  732. that you

  733. hear me

  734. and you

  735. love me

  736. because we

  737. pray in

  738. Jesus'

  739. name.

  740. We pray

  741. in his

  742. name and

  743. he stands

  744. there at

  745. the right

  746. hand of

  747. the Father

  748. holding our

  749. lives in

  750. his hands.

  751. And that's

  752. why this

  753. matters.

  754. We worship

  755. him in

  756. truth.

  757. You know

  758. the friend

  759. Dean at

  760. university

  761. always leant

  762. into this

  763. truth and

  764. I love

  765. that he

  766. always said

  767. he used

  768. the picture

  769. as he

  770. prayed

  771. God

  772. reaching

  773. down from

  774. heaven with

  775. a massive

  776. ear to

  777. hear his

  778. cry and

  779. he was

  780. the little

  781. mouse whispering

  782. into the

  783. ear.

  784. That's a bit

  785. cheesy but it

  786. makes the

  787. point, yeah?

  788. God hears

  789. our prayers.

  790. Why does he

  791. hear our

  792. prayers?

  793. Because we

  794. pray them

  795. in Jesus'

  796. name.

  797. We worship

  798. this God

  799. in truth.

  800. When it

  801. comes to

  802. worshipping the

  803. Father truly,

  804. Jesus is

  805. saying don't

  806. think place

  807. God

  808. because that

  809. place was

  810. always meant

  811. to find

  812. its

  813. fulfilment

  814. as the

  815. place where

  816. God lives

  817. and where

  818. you go to

  819. worship him

  820. in me.

  821. Friends,

  822. the first

  823. thing that

  824. true worship

  825. is about

  826. is truth

  827. and the

  828. second thing

  829. that Jesus

  830. says it's

  831. about is

  832. the spirit

  833. and that's

  834. a direct

  835. reference,

  836. I think we've

  837. got to read

  838. it this way,

  839. to the

  840. conversation that

  841. Jesus has

  842. just had with

  843. Nicodemus back

  844. at chapter 3.

  845. You want to

  846. flick there,

  847. you can do

  848. that.

  849. You must be

  850. born again

  851. the spirit

  852. of God

  853. needs to

  854. move in

  855. your life

  856. and make

  857. you alive.

  858. He needs

  859. to awaken

  860. your soul

  861. to the

  862. all-surpassing

  863. greatness

  864. and sweetness

  865. of Jesus

  866. because it's

  867. not us who

  868. came up with

  869. that,

  870. it's the

  871. spirit of

  872. God who

  873. puts that

  874. desire in

  875. our hearts.

  876. He needs

  877. to take

  878. out our

  879. dead heart

  880. of stone

  881. and he

  882. needs to

  883. put in

  884. its place

  885. a heart

  886. that beats

  887. for him.

  888. He needs

  889. to reach in

  890. there and

  891. give us

  892. new desires

  893. new loves

  894. new passions

  895. that want

  896. to follow

  897. after Jesus.

  898. Oh friends,

  899. our affections

  900. matter greatly

  901. to God.

  902. All the way

  903. through the

  904. Old Testament,

  905. God's people

  906. are consistently

  907. rebuked for

  908. doing the

  909. religious thing,

  910. saying the

  911. words,

  912. going to the

  913. place,

  914. all the while

  915. lacking the

  916. reverent heart

  917. that should

  918. have accompanied

  919. it.

  920. Isaiah 29,

  921. here's just

  922. one example,

  923. these people

  924. come near to

  925. me with

  926. their mouth

  927. and honour

  928. me with

  929. their lips

  930. but their

  931. hearts are

  932. far from

  933. me.

  934. In other

  935. words,

  936. here's the

  937. subtext to

  938. that,

  939. God will

  940. not be

  941. mocked,

  942. he will

  943. not be

  944. fobbed off

  945. by some

  946. pious words,

  947. he will

  948. not pull

  949. the wool

  950. over his

  951. eyes by

  952. some kind

  953. of religious

  954. performance.

  955. Friends,

  956. bring those

  957. two things

  958. together and

  959. I'm going

  960. to stop

  961. saying the

  962. word friends,

  963. okay?

  964. Truth that

  965. has no

  966. impact on

  967. the affections,

  968. emotions that

  969. aren't informed

  970. and led by

  971. the truth of

  972. God's word.

  973. By declaring

  974. that true

  975. worshippers are

  976. those who

  977. worship in

  978. spirit and

  979. in truth,

  980. Jesus is

  981. saying that

  982. when it

  983. comes to

  984. worshipping

  985. God truly,

  986. it's only

  987. possible with

  988. both.

  989. Spirit and

  990. truth and

  991. there ain't

  992. no dichotomy

  993. between the

  994. two.

  995. And I

  996. know so

  997. many of

  998. us are

  999. growing up

  1000. and we're

  1001. students in

  1002. particular,

  1003. I think those

  1004. churches that

  1005. worship in

  1006. spirit and

  1007. those churches

  1008. that worship

  1009. in truth,

  1010. they're really

  1011. into the

  1012. Bible,

  1013. these guys

  1014. are really

  1015. into singing,

  1016. it's not

  1017. a choice.

  1018. Jesus says

  1019. the true

  1020. worshippers

  1021. of him will

  1022. worship him

  1023. in spirit and

  1024. in truth in

  1025. the words of

  1026. my friend Bob

  1027. Coughlin in

  1028. his book

  1029. True

  1030. Worshippers.

  1031. Every church

  1032. or Christian

  1033. who claims to

  1034. be spirit led

  1035. must be

  1036. word fed.

  1037. If we want

  1038. to know more

  1039. of the spirit's

  1040. power in our

  1041. lives we would

  1042. be wise to

  1043. fill ourselves

  1044. with the riches

  1045. of his word.

  1046. Light in the

  1047. mind leading

  1048. to heat in the

  1049. heart.

  1050. And two things

  1051. for us just to

  1052. think about as we

  1053. wind this up this

  1054. morning.

  1055. Two things I

  1056. think we need to

  1057. do is we embrace

  1058. what Jesus is

  1059. saying here.

  1060. Here's the first

  1061. one.

  1062. Let's embrace

  1063. this as an

  1064. all of life

  1065. thing.

  1066. Subtext.

  1067. Let's think

  1068. bigger than

  1069. singing.

  1070. Now please

  1071. don't hear what

  1072. I'm not saying.

  1073. I'm just looking

  1074. at the text and

  1075. I'm thinking isn't

  1076. it interesting that

  1077. Jesus in his most

  1078. clear teaching about

  1079. the nature of

  1080. true worship

  1081. doesn't reference

  1082. music once.

  1083. Now friends I

  1084. love to sing.

  1085. I love to sing.

  1086. Do you not love

  1087. it when you come

  1088. in here on a

  1089. Sunday and just

  1090. declare God's

  1091. praise.

  1092. His music is just

  1093. the wonderful

  1094. vehicle through

  1095. which we can

  1096. express our

  1097. thanksgiving to

  1098. him for who he

  1099. is and what he's

  1100. done.

  1101. And do you not

  1102. find the more,

  1103. I find this more

  1104. in life the more

  1105. I come here on a

  1106. Sunday.

  1107. I need this more

1108. not less as I go

  1109. on in life.

  1110. I need the songs

  1111. that we sing

  1112. because they

  1113. remind so often

  1114. my weary and

  1115. tired.

  1116. and sleepy

  1117. and guilty

  1118. soul of the

  1119. gospel and why

  1120. we've got something

  1121. to sing about and

  1122. celebrate.

  1123. And they're so so

  1124. good for that.

  1125. Love to sing.

  1126. We should love to

  1127. sing as a church

1128. and we just want to

  1129. honour those who

  1130. lead us up the

1131. front not just on a

  1132. Sunday but all the

  1133. work that goes in

  1134. behind the scenes to

  1135. pick the songs that

  1136. are the best songs

  1137. for today.

  1138. There's real thinking

  1139. that's gone into the

  1140. songs that we're

  1141. singing to help us

  1142. meditate more on

  1143. God's words.

  1144. Just thank the

  1145. guys that serve up

  1146. the front today for

  1147. what they do.

  1148. Thank the tech guys

  1149. as well.

  1150. They put it all

  1151. together on the

  1152. slides for us to

  1153. sing.

1154. So good at it that

1155. we just take it for

  1156. granted sometimes.

  1157. We should love to

  1158. sing as a church.

  1159. Got a friend CJ

  1160. in America.

  1161. Pastor he would

  1162. always say in the

  1163. Monday morning oh

  1164. how many sleeps to

  1165. Sunday.

  1166. How many sleep.

1167. Oh I wish it were

  1168. Sunday.

  1169. Because Sunday is a

1170. big deal when we get

  1171. together as God's

  1172. people.

  1173. It is a massive

  1174. thing that we're

  1175. doing.

1176. The aim is to get

  1177. the song of the

  1178. gospel in our

  1179. hearts.

1180. But that and this is

  1181. my point this should

  1182. spill out into every

  1183. area of our lives.

  1184. work, home, gym,

  1185. family gatherings,

  1186. drinks with friends.

  1187. Because as we'll see

1188. next week the song in

  1189. this woman's heart

  1190. it leads to her

  1191. telling people about

  1192. Jesus.

  1193. It's like a worship

  1194. in a big picture.

  1195. Oh I've heard stories

  1196. of and I won't name

  1197. you two students this

  1198. week taking bold steps

  1199. to share their faith

  1200. with their peers.

  1201. That is worship.

  1202. Others respectfully

  1203. resisting the pressure

  1204. to wear a rainbow

  1205. lanyard at work.

  1206. Loving the people

  1207. that you're working

  1208. with but because you

  1209. value being faithful

  1210. to Jesus more.

  1211. You're willing to

1212. take the hit of their

  1213. raised eyebrows while

  1214. you're not joining in.

  1215. That's worship.

  1216. Others checking in on

  1217. and seeking to care

  1218. for brothers and

  1219. sisters in this church

  1220. who are going through

  1221. or have gone through

  1222. hard times.

  1223. That is worship.

  1224. We've got to understand

1225. this is a bigger thing

  1226. spirit and truth

  1227. worshippers of God.

1228. When we do this for

1229. his glory it brings him

  1230. praise and it delights

  1231. him.

1232. Let's embrace this as an

1233. all of our life's thing

  1234. and let's embrace this

1235. as an all of the world

  1236. thing.

  1237. Subtext.

  1238. Let's think bigger than

  1239. where we're living.

1240. You don't find it so

  1241. difficult in your life

1242. at times to raise your

1243. eyes to what God is

  1244. doing over the world.

  1245. You see when Jesus

  1246. declares that he is

  1247. the Messiah, the

  1248. long awaited king

  1249. right at the end

  1250. there.

  1251. Verse 25 that God

  1252. would raise up to

  1253. save his people.

  1254. This moment isn't it

  1255. glorious and isn't it

  1256. wonderful that the

  1257. first person he

  1258. declares that to.

  1259. And the first person

  1260. invited to become

1261. to him and become a

  1262. spirit and truth

  1263. worshipper of the

  1264. living God is this

  1265. shamed outcast

  1266. Samaritan woman.

1267. That is Jesus to a

  1268. T.

  1269. See the word that

  1270. Jesus uses to

  1271. describe the heart of

  1272. the father at verse

  1273. 23.

  1274. What's this God doing?

  1275. Have a look.

  1276. He's seeking his

  1277. people.

  1278. It's an active

  1279. word.

  1280. And Jesus is there

1281. not only to tell her

  1282. about the father

  1283. seeking such

  1284. worshippers.

  1285. This gospel ends

  1286. with Jesus going to

  1287. the cross to shed

  1288. his blood in her

  1289. place for her sin

  1290. taking her guilt and

  1291. condemnation and

  1292. shame on himself

1293. to make her into a

  1294. worshipper spirit and

  1295. truth worshipper of the

  1296. living God.

  1297. See the divine groom

  1298. has come to win

  1299. gather and give life

1300. to his bride which is

  1301. all his people.

  1302. And Jesus will not

  1303. have his bride

  1304. inanimate.

  1305. Rather by the work

  1306. of his spirit

  1307. opening the eyes

  1308. of his people to

  1309. his all surpassing

  1310. glory she will

  1311. radiate with

  1312. affection for him.

  1313. Now as we close

  1314. do you want to

  1315. bring this together?

1316. Do you want to hear

  1317. a really encouraging

  1318. stat I heard this

  1319. week?

  1320. Yeah?

  1321. And it will shine

  1322. even more blightly

  1323. when we consider

  1324. what is quite

  1325. literally kicking off

  1326. in about two hours

  1327. time.

  1328. FIFA seeking to

  1329. harness the power

  1330. of football to

  1331. unite and bring

  1332. the nations of the

  1333. world together

  1334. in Qatar.

  1335. And yet are we

  1336. not acutely aware

  1337. that the whole

  1338. build up to this

  1339. World Cup has been

  1340. dominated by

  1341. spotlighting the

  1342. huge and hostile

  1343. differences and

  1344. worldviews that

  1345. still exist between

  1346. the peoples and

  1347. nations of this

  1348. world.

  1349. As FIFA and I

  1350. was reading the

  1351. BBC yesterday as

  1352. FIFA try and

  1353. dance with a

  1354. Muslim state.

  1355. And in contrast

  1356. to that according

  1357. to research done

  1358. by a church

  1359. pastor in Miami

  1360. let me ask you

  1361. who do you think

  1362. the average

  1363. Christian is in

  1364. the world today?

  1365. You know what I

  1366. mean by average

  1367. okay?

  1368. Who do you think

  1369. that person is?

  1370. The average

  1371. Christian in the

  1372. world today.

  1373. This church

  1374. research that

  1375. went on.

  1376. And I love

  1377. this.

  1378. She is a 22

  1379. year old black

  1380. female who's

  1381. living her life

  1382. in the third

  1383. world.

  1384. That is the

  1385. average Christian

  1386. in the world

  1387. today.

  1388. Now as we sit

  1389. here I guess

  1390. as a predominantly

  1391. white middle

  1392. class people living

  1393. our lives in the

  1394. first world.

  1395. what is that

  1396. telling us about

  1397. what God is

  1398. doing in our

  1399. midst?

  1400. See the invitation

  1401. to lift our

  1402. eyes to what

  1403. God is doing

  1404. around the globe

  1405. down the ages

  1406. is telling us

  1407. that this God

  1408. is gathering

  1409. making and

  1410. uniting

  1411. worshippers

  1412. from everywhere.

  1413. Everywhere.

  1414. People that we

  1415. will never meet

  1416. but we will be

  1417. sharing glory with

  1418. them one day.

  1419. For what are the

  1420. different peoples of

  1421. the world doing

  1422. together in that

  1423. scene at the end

  1424. of the Bible

  1425. in God's very

  1426. presence?

  1427. What are they

  1428. doing?

  1429. They're worshipping

  1430. him as one.

  1431. Salvation belongs

  1432. to our God who

  1433. sits on the throne

  1434. and to the Lamb.

  1435. The invitation this

  1436. morning is to

  1437. come and become

  1438. a spirit and

  1439. truth worshipper

  1440. of the living God.

  1441. God.

  1442. Let's pray,

  1443. will we?

  1444. Perhaps in the

  1445. silence now,

  1446. maybe bring your

  1447. own prayers to

  1448. God.

  1449. As we think

  1450. about what the

  1451. Lord Jesus has

  1452. taught us this

  1453. morning and that

  1454. we can address

  1455. this God through

  1456. him and his

  1457. work on the cross

  1458. for us and his

  1459. resurrection, we

  1460. can know and

  1461. address this God

  1462. as our Father.

  1463. Father, we ask

  1464. that by your

  1465. spirit moving

  1466. amongst us just

  1467. now, that he

  1468. would be doing

  1469. his work in our

  1470. hearts of

  1471. transforming us

  1472. more into the

  1473. likeness of Jesus.

  1474. Lord, we pray

  1475. that you would put

  1476. new affections for

  1477. him and what he's

  1478. done into our

  1479. hearts.

  1480. And Father, may

  1481. it just overflow

  1482. into every area

  1483. of our lives.

  1484. Thank you, God,

  1485. that this tells us

  1486. what kind of God

  1487. that you are.

  1488. You are a God

  1489. who is seeking

  1490. such people

  1491. to worship you.

  1492. Father, thank you

  1493. for this time.

  1494. In Jesus' name we

  1495. pray.

  1496. Amen.
