  1. Well, morning everyone. It's lovely to have you with us. Do keep that passage open in

  2. John chapter 4 as we get into this final section in Jesus' encounter with this Samaritan woman.

    John 4 chapter mention

  3. And it's been so good to hear the things that God has been teaching us by his Spirit as

  4. we've spent time in this little section of John's Gospel over the last number of weeks.

  5. So spending time in this section this week for me has reminded me of my friend Ollie.

  6. So Ollie lives with his family in a place right down at the bottom of the UK called St. Agnes

  7. in a place called Cornwall. If you've ever been there on your holidays, it's always a nice place to go, Cornwall.

  8. But last time we visited Ollie and his family, Ollie had a go at teaching me some Cornish slang.

  9. I don't know why I ever thought I would use that in my life, but here we are and I'm using it today.

  10. So it's come in handy. He said, down here folks use this word directly.

  11. Right? I'd probably say it better than that, directly or something.

  12. And I said, Ollie, you've got to give me this in a sentence, but why would a local use the word directly?

  13. And he said, okay, if you were to ask somebody if they have finished a job or not,

  14. and they responded with the word directly, what they are telling you is that that job is one that they're going to get to later.

  15. Right? That they'll get to it. It's coming. They'll get to it.

  16. And the subtext of directly is that there are more important things to me right now.

  17. So somebody answers you that word in Cornwall, that's what they mean.

  18. The thing that you're asking me to do is not a priority.

  19. And here's why Ollie and this one word came to mind this week.

  20. Because this is about the one thing that's the most important to Jesus.

  21. This is about his focus. This is about his heartbeat.

  22. This is about his desire.

  23. And this is about the one thing that he's engaged in, not later, but the thing that he's engaged in now.

  24. And if you come with me to the text, you'll see it at verse 34.

  25. So this is the key verse in this section of John's gospel this morning.

  26. Jesus says, speaking to his disciples,

  27. My food, and by food he means the thing that sustains and satisfies him,

  28. the thing that he wakes up every day determined to do.

  29. My food, says Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

  30. So carrying out the will of his father is to Jesus his number one priority.

  31. Do you see him state it?

  32. What is his father's will?

  33. Well, we saw it in chapter 3 and verse 16.

  34. And there's a reason that people often refer to this verse as Christianity in a nutshell.

  35. Because it's so good.

  36. What is the father's priority?

  37. Well, here we have it.

  38. God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him will not perish,

  39. but have eternal life.

  40. The two W's there.

  41. The world.

  42. Remember the world that rejected God?

  43. God's enemies.

  44. This is a world that God loved.

  45. And the second W, whoever.

  46. Wide open to come and put your trust in Jesus and have life in his name.

  47. So Jesus' joy is carrying out the will of his father,

  48. which is saving people from the just condemnation of God

  49. and flowing from that the eternal separation from him

  50. that hangs over every human being out with of Jesus.

  51. Jesus' number one aim is to rescue people from that.

  52. And more than that, reconcile them to God.

  53. Make them right with their creator.

  54. And make a way for them to be adopted into the family of God.

  55. That's the gospel in a nutshell.

  56. That is the core thing of Christianity.

  57. Maybe you're here today and this is new to you.

  58. Here is the very crux of our faith.

  59. The Evangelion.

  60. The gospel.

  61. A word that when William Tyndale translated the Bible from Latin into English,

  62. he said of this word,

  63. it's a word that means news,

  64. that makes a person's heart glad

  65. and makes him sing, dance and leap for joy.

  66. That's the gospel.

  67. And everything Jesus does has as its goal

  68. the finishing of that work.

  69. And the next time you see that word finish come up in this gospel

  70. is from Jesus' lips

  71. as he hangs there suspended on the cross.

  72. With his final breath, his final words,

  73. it is finished.

  74. Jesus dying on the cross is the event that will open up the wonder of the Father's plan

  75. to the peoples of the world to respond.

  76. And that's what's most important to Jesus.

  77. And that's his heart as he lays out here in this section for his disciples.

  78. Why does he put it out there?

  79. He puts it out there for them to catch.

  80. Right?

  81. Catch it.

  82. Get it in their lungs.

  83. This is what he's about.

  84. Those who follow him,

  85. he wants them to make this their mission.

  86. And so as we consider this passage today

  87. and what God is doing in the world today,

  88. here's three things that this passage invites us not to do.

  89. Not to do.

  90. Here's the first.

  91. Not to underestimate the power of our witness.

  92. Remember, all this comes in the context

  93. of Jesus' encounter with this Samaritan woman.

  94. Scan your eyes back over the first two sections of chapter four if you want.

  95. Jesus, the man who knows every skeleton in her closet.

  96. Jesus, the man who has invited her to become a worshiper of the living God.

  97. Look what she does.

  98. Verse 28.

  99. She hears that news

  100. and she leaves her water jar.

  101. Do you see all these details in the text here?

  102. She leaves her water jar.

  103. Remember, this is noon.

  104. This is the height of the day.

  105. This is when you're most thirsty.

  106. This is the whole reason that she's come out in the first place.

  107. But why would you leave your water jar?

  108. You leave it because something bigger has happened in your life, right?

  109. And she heads back into town.

  110. And notice these two surprising details in the text here.

  111. I love thinking about this week.

  112. Who does she speak to?

  113. Do you see?

  114. Fair enough.

  115. You run back home.

  116. You go to your own room and you meditate sweetly on that thought that you've just met Jesus.

  117. No, who does she speak to?

  118. She speaks to the people.

  119. Do you see it?

  120. Who are these people?

  121. Well, these are the people in her community who had shunned her.

  122. And these are the people who she was avoiding at all costs.

  123. And so maybe even for the first time in years, she speaks to them.

  124. And what does she say?

  125. She says, come and meet them.

  126. A man who told me, do you see there, everything that I've ever done.

  127. Everything that's happened in my life.

  128. And you think to yourself, honestly, everything?

  129. He's told you everything?

  130. That this woman's life was a mixture of regret and mistakes and pain and hurt.

  131. And you think to yourself, you want people knowing that?

  132. Do you know what?

  133. If somebody knew everything about me, the last thing I'd want to do is to broadcast that fact to the world.

  134. And then even more than that, invite people to come and meet the person who knows every single thing about me.

  135. Right?

  136. That's not what I would do.

  137. I would either silence that person who knew everything about me,

  138. or I would do what the 12 powerful men that apparently Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes and lover of a practical joke, did

  139. when they received a telegram from him that simply said, flee, all has been discovered.

  140. So he sends this to 12 of the most powerful men in his society.

  141. Flee, all has been discovered.

  142. And the story goes that within 24 hours, all 12 of those people had legged out of the country.

  143. That's what I would do.

  144. I would silence him or I would get out of the country.

  145. The thought of people finding out everything about us is terrifying, is it not?

  146. Which makes this woman's vulnerability here even more remarkable.

  147. That she's okay with that.

  148. And more than that, she's wearing it.

  149. She's embracing it.

  150. Which shows us what about the grace of Jesus?

  151. That the grace of Jesus liberates us from pretending we're sorted.

  152. There is no freer place to be than to live our lives in light of the grace and knowledge and love and forgiveness that is in Christ Jesus.

  153. He is the strong tower that the righteous can run into and be saved.

  154. And that's not massively attractive.

  155. In our world right now where many of us struggle with imposter syndrome.

  156. That we think we think we don't deserve to be somewhere.

  157. That we think if only they knew.

  158. We feel so out of place.

  159. We feel like we're not good enough.

  160. Do you see how this woman shows us that there is no freer place to be than to live our lives in light of the grace of Jesus?

  161. And do you see how we get it again at verse 39?

  162. I mean this must have been the standout feature for so many.

  163. Do you see how that's repeated twice here in these verses?

  164. He told me everything.

  165. The people realize they have told her everything.

  166. Everything?

  167. Her?

  168. Him?

  169. Everything?

  170. Everything?

  171. But you see how when many heard that and saw the difference, the transformation that's gone on in this woman's life, they believed.

  172. And is it not so beautiful that the first Gentile evangelist in John's gospel,

  173. God's plan since before the foundation of the world to gather a people from the ends of the earth to himself,

  174. who is the first person beyond the border of Israel who is invited to become a worshiper of God and go and tell everyone else who is it?

  175. It's this despised, shunned, Samaritan woman.

  176. Oh, how God can powerfully use the story of just a simple, transformed life that says,

  177. Jesus saved me from my sin and there's joy and there's life in knowing him.

  178. And this is the Sam Albrey quote on the screen.

  179. I think this is so wonderful.

  180. Sam Albrey's a Christian apologist from down south.

  181. He's now over in Nashville in the States, but he just writes some wonderful stuff.

  182. Here's what he said, and I love this.

  183. I don't need to look good so that Jesus can look good.

  184. Feel the weight of that off your shoulders.

  185. I need to be honest about my colossal spiritual need so that he can look all sufficient.

  186. First thing we've not to do is to underestimate the power of our witness,

  187. how the Lord can use that to bring people to himself.

  188. You think you've not got a story?

  189. You think you've not got a dramatic story?

  190. Let me just say it wasn't a dramatic stories of conversion

  191. and people doing wonderful things in far off lands for Jesus that convinced me that Christianity was true.

  192. Do you know what it was?

  193. It was seeing people for whom I could tell that knowing Jesus made a difference to every single detail of their lives.

  194. The way they went to work.

  195. The way they did the dishes at night.

  196. The way that they enjoyed time with their children.

  197. The way that they were honest about falling out with their spouse.

  198. The way that they went out of their way just to love people in simple ways in our church congregation growing up.

  199. Those were the things where I could see that they knew Jesus.

  200. Don't underestimate the power and how God can use your simple witness.

  201. Here's the second thing not to do.

  202. It's not to overlook the people around us.

  203. Back in the text you see verse 35.

  204. How the camera almost pans back to the disciples.

  205. And I love this right?

  206. I kind of love slapstick comedy.

  207. I wonder how this is kind of how it went.

  208. Maybe they even witness her drop her bucket.

  209. Smash.

  210. And off she runs.

  211. And they come into the scene wondering what on earth has gone on here.

  212. But they come back to the scene.

  213. The camera moves from the woman.

  214. She's run back into town.

  215. The camera moves to the disciples.

  216. What's on their minds?

  217. Do you see?

  218. What are they thinking about this whole time?

  219. They're thinking about food.

  220. Jesus, have you had something to eat?

  221. They're wondering if he's got some kind of secret stash that he's drawing on.

  222. Has somebody given him something to eat?

  223. Why is he not answering this question?

  224. And he so wonderfully, masterfully uses that desire for bread to teach them about his priorities.

  225. And to get them thinking about harvest time.

  226. See verse 35.

  227. He says, don't you have a saying that it's still four months until harvest?

  228. Do you see it?

  229. It's probably just something that the locals said to each other at a certain point of year.

  230. Kind of like the way, and I was thinking about it this week.

  231. Kind of like the thing that we're all saying in Scotland at this time.

  232. If you've grown up here, if you've been here for any length of time, here's a saying that we always say in November.

  233. What do we say about the knights?

  234. What are they doing?

  235. They're fair drawing in.

  236. We always say it in November time in Scotland.

  237. Have you said that one recently?

  238. Yeah?

  239. Try not to clock anyone in the eyes.

  240. I've said that many times.

  241. Something that we say at a certain time of year.

  242. I think this is what's going on here.

  243. Is it not four months until harvest time?

  244. And yet Jesus says, way out of harvest time, lift up your eyes and see.

  245. Which begs the question, doesn't it?

  246. What would they have seen?

  247. So what would they have seen?

  248. They would have seen brown, empty fields.

  249. And that makes what Jesus says next really strange.

  250. He says, look and see that the fields are white unto harvest.

  251. They are ripe for harvest.

  252. So the disciples who were previously thinking of bread are now probably thinking,

  253. this guy is a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

  254. What is he talking about?

  255. What's on the horizon?

  256. Rather, flip the question, who's on the horizon?

  257. As he likely, and many commentators point this out,

  258. as he likely directs their gaze back towards the city where they've just come from

  259. and where the Samaritan woman has ran to.

  260. That's where their gaze is.

  261. And Jesus says, look, what do you see?

  262. I'm telling you that the fields are white unto harvest.

  263. So what do they see?

  264. They see people from that Samaritan village coming out of the Samaritan village on their way to meet Jesus.

  265. Because if he has transformed this lady's life, this woman's life,

  266. then we need to kind of see who this guy is and what he's about.

  267. And as they're making their way across, Jesus is saying, do you see the harvest?

  268. Do you see the people?

  269. He's talking about a soul harvest.

  270. Now here's why I think I'm so like the disciples in this scene.

  271. I like to picture them this week.

  272. Remember, they've just come from that Samaritan village, right?

  273. They went in there to buy bread and they've come back out to Jesus.

  274. Remember this whole Jew, Jew, Israelite, Jew, Samaritan thing that's going on,

  275. the hostility between the two.

  276. Can you imagine the scene when they're in that village trying to get bread?

  277. Right?

  278. Twelve of them thinking, where's the shop?

  279. There's the shop.

  280. Tell you what, two of you come in, ten of us will stand outside,

  281. but we'll keep a lookout just in case things kick off out here.

  282. Can you imagine saying to the person who's selling you the bread,

  283. can you have bread?

  284. He's very aware of your Galilean accent.

  285. He knows you're not from here.

  286. All of them are panicking.

  287. And what's their only thought?

  288. Their only thought is we want to get in and we want to get out and back to Jesus.

  289. as quickly as we can.

  290. Their tunnel vision on that.

  291. Not even for a minute did it cross their minds

  292. that Jesus actually might have things to do in the lives of these people,

  293. that Jesus might actually be interested in the lives of these people.

  294. I do that all the time.

  295. Tunnel vision on my to-do list.

  296. Autopilot in the mornings because I've got things to do.

  297. And do you know what?

  298. I fail to stop and look at the people who are in my path.

  299. I just take the time to listen and to look.

  300. I tried to do it the last few days this week.

  301. Have a look.

  302. It's the lollipop lady there today.

  303. The guy on the tills in Aldi.

  304. The dentist.

  305. I got no feelings.

  306. The fellow parents who are on the school run.

  307. The barista who makes my drink.

  308. All of these people who are in our lives on a day-to-day basis.

  309. That we speak to.

  310. That we interact with.

  311. If we believe in the sovereignty of God, and we do,

  312. then that means that no one who's in your path today is there by chance.

  313. You know, there was a Greek goddess who people worshipped in the first century

  314. because she was thought to oversee the fortunes of the city.

  315. That goddess's name, when translated roughly into English,

  316. you know what it was?

  317. What it is?

  318. Luck.

  319. Luck doesn't control your day.

  320. Luck doesn't control your day.

  321. Fortuna, who was the Roman goddess, she doesn't control your day either.

  322. Fortuna, fortune.

  323. Right?

  324. Fortune cookie.

  325. You see where we've derived all of our language from.

  326. No, no, no.

  327. This God is so sovereign that he controls your day.

  328. And we think about it.

  329. If this is the game that this God is in,

  330. and he uses us as we take his word to the peoples of this world,

  331. and as he speaks through that word,

  332. if he uses us as the means to reach people,

  333. then it's game on when we look at the people around us every single day.

  334. So let's allow what Jesus is saying here to transform how you and I

  335. see the people around us every day.

  336. The people who you will go to tomorrow,

  337. and who you'll be sitting next to in your lecture hall.

  338. And the people who you go tomorrow,

  339. or this week,

  340. and you're sharing a room with in your office.

  341. The person in your office who you have to go and visit

  342. to get their signature in something,

  343. or their input in something.

  344. The person who you sit next to on the Christmas night out.

  345. The person who buys the house next door and moves in.

  346. The people who, in your stairwell,

  347. will invite you to the Christmas mulled wine and mince pie party that goes on.

  348. The new kid that joins your class.

  349. All of these different things.

  350. If this God is sovereign,

  351. and he wants to reach the peoples of the world,

  352. we have to understand that he's put people in our paths for a reason.

  353. Let's not overlook the people around us.

  354. And lastly,

  355. let's not lose heart

  356. as we sow the seed.

  357. Sticking with the harvest metaphor,

  358. do you see verse 36?

  359. The disciples get a lesson in sowing and reaping.

  360. As people come to faith from this Samaritan village,

  361. Jesus wants them to understand

  362. that they are reaping the produce of someone else's labor.

  363. Verse 38.

  364. And in the context,

  365. I had never really appreciated it before

  366. until I got into it.

  367. In the context,

  368. John the Baptist,

  369. when he's baptizing back at verse 23 of chapter 3,

  370. I'd never appreciated before

  371. that he's doing that in Samaria.

  372. Not too far, actually,

  373. from where this encounter is happening.

  374. So he's been speaking about the kingdom of God in Samaria already.

  375. He's been calling people to repent.

  376. He's been telling people,

  377. do you remember those opening chapters

  378. about the Lamb of God?

  379. And clearly not only has his message

  380. had an impact in the moment,

  381. but his message is clearly still doing the rounds

  382. in the region, do you see?

  383. So he's been faithfully sowing.

  384. And Jesus is helping them understand

  385. that they are about to reap

  386. what John the Baptist was sowing.

  387. I love that.

  388. Do you imagine that this woman runs back

  389. to this town and says,

  390. this man met Jesus.

  391. Could he be the Messiah?

  392. Could he be the Christ?

  393. And people think,

  394. do you know what?

  395. I've heard that name before.

  396. I've heard about the Lamb of God.

  397. I think I've heard of something like that before.

  398. And so they're intrigued.

  399. They're curious.

  400. And out they go to meet Jesus.

  401. So he's been faithfully sowing John the Baptist.

  402. They're about to reap.

  403. For a new age is dawning

  404. as Jesus arrives in the world.

  405. An age that means,

  406. because of his death on the cross

  407. and his ascension into heaven

  408. and the sending of the Holy Spirit

  409. to apply that work to people's lives,

  410. to open their eyes

  411. to the all-surpassing beauty of Jesus,

  412. that means that it's harvest time.

  413. As the old hymn puts it,

  414. many of us would have grown up loving this song,

  415. and I think it captures it so well,

  416. talking about Jesus,

  417. who yielded his life and atonement for sin

  418. and opened the life gate that all may go in.

  419. This is this new age that Jesus is talking about.

  420. He's done the thing

  421. that's going to draw us back to God,

  422. forgiven, ransomed, restored,

  423. reconciled, loved, chosen, called.

  424. He's justified with a future.

  425. The Spirit sent.

  426. That it's harvest time.

  427. That God is going to bring in people

  428. from all over the world.

  429. And that's the truth,

  430. and that's the mindset

  431. that he calls his disciples to embrace.

  432. And so as we stand in this new age

  433. that will culminate one day in Jesus returning,

  434. sowing and reaping are going to be going on

  435. all the time.

  436. Do you see?

  437. All the time.

  438. And so here's the question, really simply.

  439. Are we sowing the gospel into all sorts of places

  440. and into the lives of all sorts of people?

  441. And here's the thing.

  442. We'll see a few examples of this in a moment.

  443. We've got no idea how God is going to use that down the line.

  444. Absolutely no idea how he's going to do it.

  445. But he will.

  446. His word will never return to him empty.

  447. And our labors for him are never in vain.

  448. So we sow faithfully,

  449. knowing that the Lord will use it.

  450. And so two quick fire questions

  451. to get us thinking about this.

  452. First of all,

  453. are we sowing gospel prayers?

  454. Are we praying about things?

  455. You know, one of my favorite stories here,

  456. and this is before probably 80% of us,

  457. well before my time,

  458. probably before 80% of us here,

  459. before any of our time.

  460. There was a lady here called Sheila McBride.

  461. And I never met Sheila,

  462. but I've heard all about her.

  463. Ruth Aird was telling me recently

  464. that the two of them used to meet up

  465. on a regular basis just over there

  466. and pray.

  467. And pray.

  468. And in the days when the church

  469. was struggling numerically,

  470. maybe growing a bit older,

  471. they prayed, she was telling me,

  472. that God would raise up

  473. the next generation

  474. who would carry on this gospel work

  475. and who would continue

  476. to be a witness in this community.

  477. Isn't that incredible?

  478. If you're here,

  479. look at us here today,

  480. you are here

  481. and we are an answer to that prayer.

  482. How God has answered that prayer.

  483. I love it,

  484. just sowing prayers.

  485. It was not an amazing thing

  486. to think about this week

  487. as I thought about it.

  488. Wouldn't it be great to pray

  489. for the Brunswick congregation

  490. who meet here in 30 years' time?

  491. Right?

  492. The things that we would love

  493. God to do in this community

  494. in 30 years' time,

  495. that there would continue

  496. to be a gospel witness here

  497. and there would be a generation here

  498. who would continue

  499. to be on fire for Jesus

  500. and witnessing to the people here.

  501. Would that be a great thing

  502. to pray?

  503. That babies would be born,

  504. that teens would come to faith,

  505. people would come to faith.

  506. The whole multi-generational thing

  507. would continue to carry on here

  508. as a witness

  509. to what God has done

  510. in our midst.

  511. So if you're here today

  512. and you're before Sheila's time

  513. just like me,

  514. we need to understand

  515. that we are standing

  516. on the shoulders

  517. of prayer warriors.

  518. Are we praying, friends,

  519. for the next generation?

  520. Are we praying for our friends?

  521. Are we praying for our neighbours?

  522. Are we praying for our family?

  523. And I love to think

  524. we can tell the generations to come

  525. that during COVID,

  526. we met every night to pray

  527. on Zoom.

  528. And they'll say,

  529. what was Zoom?

  530. And we'll be able to tell them.

  531. Met every night to pray on Zoom.

  532. And every Monday,

  533. I love that,

  534. that every Monday

  535. people meet to pray.

  536. Please do come and join

  537. if you haven't done that before.

  538. Another thing I invite you to do,

  539. email my address on the website

  540. with things that you would love

  541. us to pray about.

  542. And we'll make sure

  543. that they're prayed about on Monday,

  544. particularly people.

  545. As you think about Christmas invites,

  546. speaking to friends,

  547. if you email in with things

  548. and people you want to get prayed for,

  549. we'll make sure

  550. that they get prayed for

  551. on Monday,

  552. eight o'clock on Zoom.

  553. Are we sowing prayers

  554. as a church generation

  555. here today?

  556. Are we sowing gospel words

  557. to our non-believing friends?

  558. Yes,

  559. but maybe just

  560. broaden it out a little bit.

  561. To our non-believing friends

  562. as we think about them.

  563. Question,

  564. how many of us became believers

  565. when put up our hands

  566. because of the witness

  567. and words of a friend or parent?

  568. Just put up your hand

  569. if that was you.

  570. Somebody told you about Jesus.

  571. Right?

  572. That's how you came to faith.

  573. Whether they were in a church,

  574. whether they were at school,

  575. whatever,

  576. they just told you about Jesus.

  577. Do you see how this works?

  578. That God would use means

  579. to reach us?

  580. Be encouraged by that.

  581. That this is how God works.

  582. Are we sowing gospel words

  583. into people's lives?

  584. Non-believing friends.

  585. But just broaden it up a little bit.

  586. Are we sowing gospel words

  587. into our children?

  588. Parents,

  589. I get that it's hard,

  590. right,

  591. to keep on being faithful

  592. and sowing into their lives.

  593. Honestly,

  594. every night I have

  595. that inner wrestle

  596. in the chaos

  597. of family dinner time.

  598. WrestleMania happens

  599. on the couch over here

  600. and you're running about

  601. thinking,

  602. honestly,

  603. could we not just get

  604. through this night

  605. and we'll just get

  606. the kids down

  607. and we have a free evening?

  608. Right?

  609. Don't underestimate

  610. the spiritual battle of that.

  611. Why it's always

  612. the most difficult time of day

  613. at that point.

  614. But are we sowing

  615. the gospel seed

  616. into the lives

  617. of our children?

  618. And that's not just

  619. a parent's thing.

  620. All of us.

  621. Are we helping

  622. with this next generation?

  623. Right?

  624. It takes a community

  625. to raise a child,

  626. so goes the saying.

  627. Are we sowing gospel words

  628. into their lives?

  629. Are we encouraging Peter

  630. in his work?

  631. Don't underestimate

  632. what God can do

  633. as we continue

  634. to sow.

  635. Friends,

  636. to those who are suffering,

  637. going through hard times

  638. just now.

  639. Are we sowing

  640. the word of God

  641. into their lives?

  642. Sowing not cliches,

  643. but are we sowing

  644. verses,

  645. thoughts that we've

  646. really thought about

  647. and are praying for them?

  648. You know,

  649. there was the lady

  650. who we stayed with

  651. in the States

  652. over the summer.

  653. Her husband died slowly

  654. and I'm pretty sure

  655. it was of MS.

  656. And she said

  657. when it happened,

  658. the years of my pastors

  659. and my friends

  660. who for years before

  661. had been sowing

  662. the word of God

  663. into my life

  664. and into my heart

  665. and that moment

  666. for both of us,

  667. her husband and I,

  668. she said it really

  669. kicked in.

  670. Friends,

  671. are we sowing

  672. God's words,

  673. faithfully sowing

  674. into those

  675. who are suffering?

  676. And are maybe

  677. the last group

  678. as we think about,

  679. are we sowing

  680. into the lives

  681. of those

  682. who we might

  683. understand one day

  684. might move on?

  685. Right?

  686. It's one of the

  687. challenges of being

  688. a city centre church

  689. where there's a high

  690. turnover of people

  691. and I know that

  692. we're feeling it

  693. right now

  694. as people come

  695. and as people go

  696. and it's so hard

  697. to say goodbye

  698. to people that you love.

  699. But what a privilege

  700. is it not

  701. that God brings us

  702. people for a season

  703. for us to love

  704. and for us to care for,

  705. for us to invest in

  706. and that those people go.

  707. I get that it's hard.

  708. I get that it's hard.

  709. But let's view it

  710. like this.

  711. Do you know what?

  712. I want to encourage you

  713. this morning

  714. because I hear

  715. the other side of it

  716. and I speak to the

  717. pastors and church

  718. leaders of churches

  719. where people are going

  720. to move on to

  721. and they say to me

  722. just thank you so much

  723. as a church family

  724. for being faithful

  725. and investing in them

  726. for that season

  727. of their lives

  728. because they've come

  729. to us

  730. and they're such

  731. a blessing.

  732. I think I said

  733. we've got to think

  734. with this stuff,

  735. isn't it?

  736. We've got to think

  737. kingdom.

  738. Are we sowing faithfully

  739. into people's lives

  740. who we know

  741. might one day move on?

  742. We're not holding back

  743. from that.

  744. We're investing in people

  745. because this is an age

  746. to see where the reaper

  747. and the sower

  748. will rejoice together.

  749. In other words,

  750. this is not tribes.

  751. They realize that

  752. they're on the same team.

  753. Here is the thing

  754. that's most important

  755. to Jesus.

  756. Here is the Father's will.

  757. The Father's will

  758. to save and gather

  759. a people from all

  760. corners of the earth

  761. and gather them

  762. to him.

  763. And if you take

  764. one thing from this today,

  765. and I hope you take

  766. more than one thing,

  767. but if you take one thing,

  768. just remember

  769. that nothing is going

  770. to stop him doing this.

  771. Just as we close,

  772. let me tell you

  773. this one example of this

  774. that encouraged me

  775. that this is true.

  776. Last Sunday,

  777. after the service,

  778. last Sunday,

  779. I went to speak

  780. at Grace Mount

  781. Community Church.

  782. And I noticed this lady

  783. who was sitting

  784. right on the front row.

  785. And so I went up to her

  786. and I started chatting to her

  787. and introduced myself

  788. and she said back to me,

  789. she said,

  790. Hi, I'm Marion.

  791. I'm the one

  792. that used to spy on them.

  793. Now, I've heard many

  794. a first line from somebody

  795. when I've introduced myself.

  796. I've never heard that one.

  797. But this was Marion.

  798. Marion used to spy on them.

  799. So I've got the backstory.

  800. Here's the backstory.

  801. The church,

  802. when it first started,

  803. used to meet in a care home.

  804. Now, if you know Grace Mount,

  805. you know the leisure centre there.

  806. Opposite the leisure centre

  807. is the care home, right?

  808. So they used to meet there

  809. when they first started

  810. as a church plant.

  811. And as I understand it,

  812. the care home,

  813. we're happy for them to meet.

  814. But as you understand

  815. in our climate,

  816. a little bit nervous

  817. as to who they are

  818. and what they're about to teach.

  819. Okay?

  820. Underlying thing,

  821. are they a cult?

  822. So what they did

  823. is they sent along a cleaner

  824. who was about to clean

  825. after they'd left.

  826. Sent along the cleaner.

  827. Can you go just a little bit early

  828. and can you spy on them?

  829. Can you suss them out?

  830. What are they about?

  831. And Marion was that cleaner.

  832. So Marion turned up every week

  833. just a little bit early.

  834. Her suspicion turned to intrigue,

  835. turned to interest,

  836. turned to questions,

  837. turned to conversations,

  838. turned to coffees,

  839. turned to repentance

  840. and faith in Jesus

  841. and turned to baptism today.

  842. Isn't that cool?

  843. I loved it as well

  844. because during the notices

  845. they said,

  846. we've got a Christianity

  847. Explored course

  848. that we're running.

  849. Who's planning on coming?

  850. Marion's hand was straight up.

  851. And I don't mean like that.

  852. I mean like that.

  853. And she turns around

  854. to the rest of the congregation

  855. as if they say,

  856. come on guys,

  857. am I the only one?

  858. Am I the only one coming?

  859. Am I the only one

  860. going to invite friends?

  861. Love it.

  862. And I think that encouraged me

  863. so much because this is hard

  864. and let's not kid ourselves

  865. that this is not hard

  866. in the world in which we live.

  867. It's just hostile

  868. to the things of God.

  869. And again,

  870. this is what we expect

  871. as we read through Scripture.

  872. But let's be just

  873. as fortified

  874. and strengthened

  875. by the truth

  876. that Jesus is bigger.

  877. And this is true

  878. today

  879. ever as it was then

  880. that this is the business

  881. that he's employed in.

  882. And do you see

  883. how they finish there?

  884. What do they say of Jesus?

  885. What's the call

  886. of the Samaritans

  887. right at the end

  888. of that section there?

  889. Who is he?

  890. He's the Savior

  891. of the world.

  892. Again,

  893. just that world,

  894. that word world

  895. as John uses it,

  896. not just Israel.

  897. He's the Savior

  898. of all peoples.

  899. All those who would come

  900. to put their faith

  901. and trust in him.

  902. And maybe that's you

  903. here today.

  904. You need to do this

  905. for the first time maybe.

  906. Just put your trust

  907. in this Jesus.

  908. What's on offer today

  909. is somebody who knows you,

  910. somebody who's loved you

  911. by giving his life

  912. for you on the cross

  913. and somebody who calls you

  914. to come to him

  915. and know forgiveness

  916. and life

  917. that only he can offer.

  918. So here's what I want to do

  919. just really simply

  920. as we respond.

  921. And maybe the band folks

  922. can come back up

  923. at this point.

  924. I just want us to think

  925. about one friend.

  926. Okay,

  927. maybe one family member

  928. who you would just love

  929. to see come to know Christ.

  930. And wouldn't it be

  931. wonderful,

  932. great thought today

  933. if all of us

  934. offer up that one person

  935. and know that in this room

  936. 120 people or so

  937. are being offered up to God.

  938. Lord,

  939. would you save them?

  940. Would you open their eyes?

  941. I see, Lord,

  942. that the harvest is white.

  943. Would you help me be bold?

  944. Would you help me speak?

  945. But Father,

  946. by your spirit,

  947. would you open their eyes

  948. to see what I've come

  949. to see in Jesus?

  950. Truly he is the Savior

  951. of the world.

  952. So why don't we do that

  953. just now?

  954. We'll be quiet for a minute

  955. and then we'll maybe

  956. stand and sing

  957. just as we close.

  958. Amen.

  959. Amen.

  960. Amen.

  961. Amen.

  962. Amen.

  963. Amen.

  964. Amen.

  965. Amen.

  966. Amen.

  967. Amen.

  968. Amen.

  969. Amen.

  970. Amen.

  971. Amen.

  972. Amen.

  973. Amen.

  974. Amen.

  975. Amen.

  976. Amen.

  977. Amen.

  978. Amen.

  979. Amen.

  980. Amen.

  981. Amen.

  982. Amen.

  983. oh father you have no rival

  984. you have no equal

  985. truly there is none

  986. who matches and compares to you

  987. and loving father who hears our prayers

  988. because we offer them in Jesus' name

  989. Lord would you hear our cries just now

  990. for our friends

  991. for our family neighbours

  992. for those who will rub shoulders with tomorrow

  993. Lord would you give us the boldness to speak

  994. would the fire in our belly

  995. just like this Samaritan woman

  996. an overflowing love for you

  997. be the thing that moves our mouths

  998. Father we long that people would come to know him

  999. and see in Jesus

1000. what by your grace we have come to see in Jesus

1001. Father thank you for your grace

  1002. thank you Lord

1003. that the fields are white unto harvest

1004. because of what you have done

1005. and so father we commit all of these names to you

1006. Lord we commit our own struggles

1007. and our worries and our concerns to you

1008. knowing that you love us

1009. and that you care for us

1010. Father be with us the rest of our time

  1011. this morning

1012. and the rest of today

  1013. in Jesus' name

  1014. Amen

  1015. Amen

  1016. Amen

  1017. Amen

  1018. Amen

  1019. Amen

  1020. Amen

  1021. Amen

  1022. Amen

  1023. Amen

  1024. Amen

  1025. Amen

  1026. Amen

  1027. Amen

  1028. Amen

  1029. Amen

  1030. Amen

  1031. Amen

  1032. Amen

  1033. Amen

  1034. Amen

  1035. Amen

  1036. Amen

  1037. Amen

  1038. Amen

  1039. Amen

  1040. Amen

  1041. Amen

  1042. Amen
