  1. Okay folks, keep that passage in Malachi chapter 2 open in front of you.

    Malachi 2 chapter mention

  2. So this is the proverbial cod liver oil tablet passage.

  3. Really hard to swallow, but really good for our bodies.

  4. Really good for us to take in the message, the central message of this passage today.

  5. So my laptop's in for repair, so there's no PowerPoint today.

  6. So you're going to have to concentrate extra hard.

  7. But this is really good for us to take in this passage.

  8. So, you up for some song lyrics as we begin?

  9. You're getting song lyrics as we begin.

  10. I'm free to do what I want any old time.

  11. And I'm free to be who I choose any old time.

  12. If you're a culture vulture, which many of you are,

  13. you will recognise those as the lyrics that the Soup Dragons sang back in 1990.

  14. That was the anthem of my childhood growing up.

  15. I'm free to do what I want any old time.

  16. If you're a culture dweller though, and that's all of us by definition,

  17. you will recognise those lyrics as the drumbeat of our day.

  18. It's the drumbeat of the Western world where we celebrate individual expression

  19. and we elevate our own personal happiness as being the ultimate goal of our lives.

  20. That you and I need to be our true selves,

  21. regardless of the people who like skittles in a bowling alley we happen to knock down

  22. in the process of trying to get there.

  23. This is the mindset of our world.

  24. I'm free to do what I want any old time.

  25. I'm free to choose to be who I want any old time.

  26. And the thing is, if you search your hearts this morning,

  27. and I really searched mine in preparation for this this week.

  28. The truth of it is, like flavouring in your morning coffee,

  29. sometimes you can drink this every day

  30. and not even realise that it's in your system.

  31. This mindset.

  32. Do you see it in your own heart?

  33. I'm free to do what I want any old time.

  34. You see, that's the mindset that as we look at this generation of God's people,

  35. who we'll see in a minute have bought it hook, line and sinker.

  36. That's the mindset that God is going to challenge in each of our hearts this morning.

  37. Particularly in terms of how we understand this whole area of sex and marriage.

  38. That's the presenting issue here in this day.

  39. Now your reaction to me saying that is likely to be one of two things.

  40. Number one is that you'll switch on.

  41. Number two is that you'll switch off.

  42. Right?

  43. Maybe wondering, why on earth would I care that God has something to say about that?

  44. Why is he meddling in this field?

  45. I met a guy in America whose surname was Meddler.

  46. I thought it was quite funny.

  47. Why is God meddling in this field?

  48. Why should I care what he thinks?

  49. You maybe see God like C.S. Lewis did before he became a Christian.

  50. He outlines it in his book.

  51. Remember reading it as a young Christian, surprised by joy.

  52. Right?

  53. And it's a tale of how he came to faith as a kind of atheist, agnostic.

  54. How he came to believe in the God of the Bible.

  55. Before he believed, he called God, in his own words, the grand interferer.

  56. Right?

  57. Maybe that's how you understand God today.

  58. Well, it's been my prayer for you this week that you might detect the scent of the sweet answer that the Bible has for you on that.

  59. Right?

  60. As we contemplate how and why Jesus calls his followers to adopt a different mindset from that of the world.

  61. Now, we've seen over the last number of weeks, God's stinging words of rebuke to the priests.

  62. Do you remember that?

  63. That was kind of chapter two.

  64. Well, now God turns to address the people.

  65. The people.

  66. Now, let me just say two really quick things to try and create a canvas for this sermon so that we can see clearly the picture where we're going to end with this that's right at the center of it.

  67. Right?

  68. I want us to see the word of the text.

  69. Now, if you've got it there, just have a look.

  70. Glance over it.

  71. Remember what John was reading.

  72. The word of the text is the word faithless.

  73. Now, if you scan your eye over the passage, you'll clock that it comes up five times in this passage.

  74. So this is Malachi addressing the people.

  75. God's speaking through Malachi, addressing the people.

  76. And it's almost as if God is saying that that's the word that I'd use to sum up what I see when I look at you, this generation of my people.

  77. Faithless.

  78. Faithless.

  79. And from the word of the text, I want us to be honest about the pain of the topic.

  80. Because the issue here, on the surface, is that easy to force has become a thing amongst God's people.

  81. And I recognize that for many of us, even just the mention of that word might be touching some really sensitive and painful nerves right now.

  82. Whether you know that word personally, you know the pain of it, or maybe that you've seen it from a distance, how it's affected your closest friends and family.

  83. In ways that words can't even begin to put that, you can't even begin to put that into words.

  84. Isn't it true that Hollywood almost presents it to us as a harmless and almost natural conclusion to a marriage relationship?

  85. Remember a number of years ago, what was that phrase that was made popular by Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow?

  86. To describe their divorce back in 2014.

  87. They called it a conscious uncoupling.

  88. Do you remember that?

  89. You might get away with that if you've got tons of money in the bank.

  90. But I've got friends who work in different areas of this city.

  91. And let me say, when it happens, it causes utter chaos.

  92. Utter chaos.

  93. Utter pain.

  94. Now it's worth saying that even though God hates divorce, we see it clearly in this passage.

  95. The Bible has so much more to say on that, that we're going to have time to cover today.

  96. Regarding the times when it is sadly and regrettably permissible.

  97. But if you have questions on this, and I take it many of us will, a lot of us will,

  98. then please come and speak to one of the elders.

  99. We're here this morning to answer your questions about this topic.

  100. And just to chat and to pray and to listen.

  101. Because we want to strive to be that kind of church community where we have that spirit of honesty and love for one another.

  102. And we can walk with one another compassionately through the things that really hurt in life.

  103. That's the community we want to be, is it not?

  104. That's the community we want to be.

  105. And if nothing else, I want us to be greatly heartened this morning by the fact that the God of the Bible would speak into the most painful and deepest wounds and sorest of wounds with his words.

  106. This is why he speaks here.

  107. To offer words of challenge and to pour gallons of grace on the people who are behind this text.

  108. He loves us.

  109. The God of the Bible is committed to his glory.

  110. And he's committed, determined to bring the people, the world over to see his goodness, love and grace.

  111. And he is a good father.

  112. Maybe for some of us here this morning, and again, this has been my prayer,

  113. that this might even be by God's sheer goodness and grace, the start of that long road that is the healing process.

  114. And so let's get into the meat of this.

  115. And again, here is the structure for today.

  116. It's really simple because there's no PowerPoint.

  117. Here it is, 3, 2, 1.

  118. Okay?

  119. Here's the three.

  120. Notice the three names of God that Malachi uses right up top.

  121. Give us an indication into who he is and why he's speaking here.

  122. Here's the first one.

  123. He's our father.

  124. Verse 10.

  125. Do you see it?

  126. He's our father.

  127. God speaking through Malachi reminds them that as a nation, they are his special possession.

  128. Right?

  129. He is the father of the like, and they are all his children.

  130. So this is him saying, it's not like we happen to have all pitched up and live in the same street.

  131. No, God has brought us together.

  132. He saved us as a people.

  133. He's bound us and bonded us together.

  134. He's our father.

  135. So it's a family metaphor that Malachi is using here.

  136. He's our father.

  137. We're his children.

  138. And do you see he say, has not one God created us?

  139. Now, the Hebrew word there is the Genesis 1 word for God.

  140. This God, says Malachi, remember, he's our creator.

  141. Look at your hands.

  142. Take a breath.

  143. Sing a song.

  144. It's him that's given us all the abilities that we have.

  145. He's our creator.

  146. He is the one.

  147. He is the three in one God who's made us in his image.

  148. And because the three in one God has made us in his image, we are deeply relational beings.

  149. That is not an accident.

  150. And friends, that is why many of us, all of us really struggled with COVID being inside, not together.

  151. Because we're wired.

  152. We're wired like this.

  153. We are deeply relational beings.

  154. In other words, the grand watchmaker knows how we tick.

  155. He's made us in his image.

  156. He's the relational God, father, son, spirit, loving each other perfectly.

  157. Since before eternity began.

  158. Therefore, particularly when it comes to human relationships, and I take it this is Malachi's point, and sexuality.

  159. And how they will flourish best.

  160. It seems that there is great wisdom in acknowledging that perhaps the God who framed us and knows us and who loves us.

  161. Might have something to say for our good into that.

  162. Now, it's Glenn Harrison, Christian doctor and psychologist who's working down in Bristol.

  163. In his wonderful little book, A Better Story.

  164. God, Sex, and Human Flourishing.

  165. And this is one of the best books I've read on this that somebody has produced really recently.

  166. He says this.

  167. He says,

  168. The gospel calls us to learn to be God's creatures all over again.

  169. Because this is his reality, not ours.

  170. And we will flourish when we work in harmony with our creator's reality.

  171. And I think that's so helpful.

  172. This gospel calls us to learn to be God's creatures all over again.

  173. If you want to check this out, just come and grab it.

  174. It will be on the stage afterwards.

  175. But it's a really good book worth checking out.

  176. This is what Malachi is saying.

  177. He is our God.

  178. He's the God.

  179. He's the God who made us.

  180. He designed it all.

  181. And lastly, thirdly, he is, verse 12, the Lord of hosts.

  182. Do you see that?

  183. He is the God of angel armies.

  184. So this is a serious thing.

  185. Not only when we lean into our own wisdom and neglect deliberately his,

  186. but it's a serious thing when we inflict pain, not just on any human being,

  187. but particularly when we inflict it in this context on God's children.

  188. And we've got to answer to him at the end of the day for how we've treated others.

  189. So do you see the three aspects to God there?

  190. He's our father.

  191. He loves us.

  192. He knows us.

  193. He saved us.

  194. He's our God.

  195. He's the one who framed us.

  196. He knows us.

  197. And he's the Lord of angel armies.

  198. He's the one who we'll have to give account to.

  199. They just frame this whole discussion that this is who God is.

  200. And really quickly, from the three names of God,

  201. see the two problems with this generation.

  202. And the first one is most clearly seen at the end of verse 15,

  203. where Malachi says, guard yourselves in your spirit, right?

  204. Heart, your inner self.

  205. Guard yourselves in your spirit and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth.

  206. So there's an easy divorce culture developing in Israel.

  207. And there's two angles on this as to why God takes it so seriously.

  208. Firstly, there's a horizontal angle.

  209. Simply, the detrimental impact that the unfaithfulness has on other people.

  210. As men in this generation, I take it,

  211. normalize and legitimize ditching their wives

  212. and going after the woman of the nations round about them,

  213. thinking to themselves,

  214. simply, I take it, I want a bit of that.

  215. They are flourishing.

  216. They are pretty.

  217. Life might go better for me over there.

  218. And so they go.

  219. Which in this culture,

  220. to do that, you are consigning the wife of your youth.

  221. And just notice the details who God witnessed you to get married.

  222. Verse 14,

  223. he witnessed you pledge yourself to her.

  224. What you're doing is causing her to move back in with her parents.

  225. And you're inflicting a shed load of shame and pain

  226. on her, her family and their community.

  227. And the thing is, where did that all start?

  228. It started in their spirits.

  229. That's why Malachi says, guard your spirits, guard your hearts.

  230. It all started in there.

  231. All started, in other words, from the vertical angle.

  232. Right?

  233. Horizontal, vertical angle.

  234. These men being unfaithful to their wives and to their community,

  235. why did they do it?

  236. Because, first of all,

  237. their hearts had given up on being faithful to the Lord.

  238. Being satisfied with who he is.

  239. In love with who he is.

  240. Desiring to be obedient to what he said.

  241. Because God's instruction to his people throughout the Old Testament is explicit.

  242. Don't marry foreign wives.

  243. Now, you've got to be really clear here, right?

  244. That this instruction is not an ethnic thing.

  245. Hear me loud and clear on that.

  246. Neither is it a racial thing.

  247. Again, hear me loud and clear on that.

  248. But hear me loud and clear on this.

  249. What is it?

  250. It's a worship thing.

  251. It's a worship thing.

  252. Because why did God give them that law?

  253. Because he knew the hearts of his people,

  254. that if they did,

  255. they would wander right into idolatry.

  256. They would take up the customs of the nations round about,

  257. of the small g gods,

  258. and they would run

  259. into the direction of rebellion against Yahweh.

  260. This is a worship thing.

  261. And the second problem,

  262. verse 13,

  263. is that these same men

  264. waltz into God's temple,

  265. throw crocodile tears of contrition before him,

  266. weeping and groaning,

  267. and they're puzzled when God doesn't seem to answer their prayers.

  268. They even have the brass neck to ask in their hearts,

  269. verse 14,

  270. why does he not?

  271. And the answer,

  272. I take it,

  273. is that God will not be played for a fool.

  274. And so it's little wonder that Malachi says to this generation,

  275. guard your spirits,

  276. guard your hearts,

  277. because this is a worship thing.

  278. So true in our lives,

  279. isn't it,

  280. friends?

  281. This is,

  282. everything else flows downstream from here.

  283. downstream from here.

  284. This is a worship thing.

  285. And when you frame it like that,

  286. that is why,

  287. even though we are not Old Testament Israel,

  288. it is not unsurprising that a command

  289. to only marry a believer

  290. is repeated in the New Testament.

  291. Now again,

  292. I recognize that that is going to be painful

  293. for many of us.

  294. And again,

  295. we'd love to chat and pray with you

  296. if you want to after this.

  297. But I remember this,

  298. growing up.

  299. If you're single here today,

  300. I get that this is tough.

  301. It is so good to have non-Christian friends.

  302. So good.

  303. But let us not go fishing there for romance.

  304. It's just not good for us to do it.

  305. And you ask in your hearts,

  306. I remember this,

  307. thinking,

  308. oh,

  309. but people are so much fun.

  310. It's,

  311. I can maybe attract them to Christian friends.

  312. It rarely goes well.

  313. And God has said,

  314. don't do it.

  315. This is a worship thing.

  316. He knows our hearts.

  317. And so here is the question

  318. that's right at the heart of this.

  319. Do we love the Lord?

  320. Do you love him?

  321. Do we trust what he says?

  322. Do we trust his blueprint

  323. for human relationships

  324. and particularly for sex

  325. in the context for that

  326. where it's going to go the best

  327. the way that he's designed it to

  328. is a marriage between one man

  329. and one woman?

  330. Are you convinced

  331. that that is the best?

  332. Do we trust Jesus

  333. with our relationship status?

  334. the fact that we worship

  335. a single man

  336. who lived the most full

  337. and most satisfied human life

  338. that ever existed.

  339. I take it that

  340. whoever we are today

  341. and whatever angle

  342. we're coming at this passage from,

  343. I take it

  344. that should be a great source

  345. of comfort to us.

  346. Do you see how Jesus Christ

  347. is the stone in the shoe

  348. of the sexual revolution

  349. that the world

  350. is trying to tell us?

  351. that you cannot be satisfied

  352. unless you give

  353. some kind of outlet,

  354. you find some kind of partner

  355. where you can be sexually fulfilled

  356. and Jesus Christ would say

  357. that's not true.

  358. He's the stone in the shoe

  359. to the sexual revolution

  360. as the world

  361. is trying to sell it to us.

  362. Friends,

  363. do you trust God's blueprint

  364. for your body?

  365. You know,

  366. we had that discussion recently

  367. around the dinner table

  368. with our kids

  369. about special parts

  370. of the body.

  371. He said,

  372. isn't that not just

  373. a revealing thing

  374. about our society,

  375. our culture today

  376. that we're having

  377. to have that conversation

  378. with six and seven year olds?

  379. I don't think I was 14

  380. until we got that at school.

  381. But it's true, isn't it?

  382. But what did we say to them?

  383. You don't let just anyone go there.

  384. Okay?

  385. That's why I take it

  386. when sex goes wrong,

  387. the pain of it

  388. is not like you've just

  389. fallen off your bike

  390. and skinned your knee

  391. in the playground, is it?

  392. The pain of it,

  393. it feels like

  394. sacred space

  395. has been intruded upon.

  396. Now, why do we feel like that?

  397. I take it because

  398. God has designed this

  399. purposefully.

  400. That there is great sanctity

  401. in sex,

  402. that God designed it

  403. for more than just

  404. mere pleasure.

  405. God designed it

  406. in order to help us

  407. grasp something

  408. profoundly bigger

  409. and more real

  410. and satisfying

  411. about who he is

  412. and about his love

  413. for us.

  414. Because that's true,

  415. the question is,

  416. is Jesus worth

  417. more to us

  418. than the fleeting

  419. pleasures and lusts

  420. of this world?

  421. Will we trust him

  422. when he says,

  423. whoever wants to come

  424. after me must deny himself,

  425. take up his cross,

  426. and follow me?

  427. That whoever would

  428. lose his life

  429. for my sake

  430. in the gospel

  431. will gain his life.

  432. And part of that denial,

  433. I take it,

  434. of self

  435. is saying no

  436. to anything

  437. that would cause us

  438. to go against

  439. King Jesus.

  440. And that takes us

  441. to the one,

  442. right,

  443. no great surprise here,

  444. he is the one.

  445. Right,

  446. three names of God,

  447. two problems

  448. with this generation,

  449. and the one person

  450. that we need to run to here.

  451. It's fascinating

  452. if you look at it

  453. and glance at it

  454. if you want

  455. in Mark chapter 10.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  456. This topic of divorce

  457. is put to Jesus.

  458. Right,

  459. the Pharisees,

  460. the religious lawyers

  461. of the day,

  462. they quiz him on it,

  463. they want to know

  464. what he thinks about it.

  465. And notice the clues

  466. as to the state

  467. of their hearts

  468. and how this conversation

  469. goes down.

  470. And I take it

  471. that's always a good thing

  472. that is worth doing

  473. when there's a question

  474. asked of Jesus

  475. and Jesus asks

  476. a question the other way.

  477. Put yourself in the shoes

  478. of the one

  479. who's asking the question.

  480. Because it's so often

  481. when Jesus answers

  482. a question with a question

  483. that the question

  484. reveals the heart

  485. of the questioner.

  486. Right?

  487. That makes sense.

  488. Reveals the heart

  489. of the questioner.

  490. And otherwise,

  491. Jesus asks questions

  492. to bring out

  493. what's really going on

  494. in the heart.

  495. That's what happens here,

  496. Mark chapter 10.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  497. They ask Jesus,

  498. Jesus,

  499. is it lawful

  500. for a man

  501. to divorce his wife?

  502. Now notice

  503. that they don't ask

  504. is it right

  505. for a man

  506. to divorce his wife?

  507. They don't ask

  508. is it wise for,

  509. they ask

  510. is it lawful

  511. for a man

  512. to divorce his wife?

  513. And again,

  514. that's just the first clue

  515. as to the state

  516. of their hearts

  517. and what they're

  518. really worried about.

  519. And Jesus,

  520. in classic Jesus style,

  521. answers their question

  522. with a question.

  523. He says,

  524. what did Moses say?

  525. Which is a good question.

  526. And they reply,

  527. he permitted us

  528. to write a certificate

  529. of divorce

  530. and to send her away.

  531. And again,

  532. that's the second clue

  533. as to the coldness

  534. of the question.

  535. What's going on

  536. in their hearts?

  537. To send her away?

  538. How chilling is that

  539. as a response?

  540. Again,

  541. the conversation

  542. could have ended there

  543. because the question

  544. technically has been answered.

  545. But Jesus wants them

  546. to see when it comes

  547. to this whole area

  548. of sex and marriage

  549. that they've

  550. totally missed

  551. the wood from the trees

  552. in the most chilling

  553. and in the most heartless

  554. of ways.

  555. He says,

  556. this is true

  557. because of the hardness

  558. of your hearts.

  559. In other words,

  560. the problem isn't marriage.

  561. No,

  562. the problem

  563. is the sinful human heart.

  564. He reaffirms

  565. that God made them

  566. in the beginning

  567. male and female.

  568. And he designed marriage

  569. so that the two

  570. would become one flesh.

  571. In other words,

  572. there's a design purpose

  573. to the way God

  574. has put this together.

  575. You need to see it

  576. and you ain't seeing it,

  577. says Jesus to the Pharisees.

  578. Now,

  579. a good question

  580. to ask at this point

  581. is why is Jesus

  582. so strong in this?

  583. It seems to be a good question.

  584. Let me put it another way.

  585. Have you ever asked yourself

  586. why God gave us sexuality?

  587. Now,

  588. that's a conversation starter

  589. when you meet your friends

  590. after this.

  591. But it's a question

  592. I want to know

  593. that if you're a Christian

  594. here today,

  595. the Bible has a wonderfully

  596. profound answer to you

  597. for that question.

  598. Why has God designed sexuality?

  599. I'll get the how,

  600. but why has he designed it?

  601. If you're here today

  602. and you don't believe

  603. any of the stuff

  604. that I've said,

  605. there's a question

  606. for you to chew on.

  607. Why is it even...

  608. God could easily have made us

  609. without that being necessary,

  610. right?

  611. Why did God design sexuality?

  612. Well,

  613. I take it

  614. it's a question

  615. that one that Jesus

  616. in the context of Mark

  617. is about to show us

  618. the answer to

  619. because he's about to fulfill.

  620. Remember this,

  621. where this comes,

  622. Mark chapter 10,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  623. Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  624. If you want to read it through

  625. in your own time after this,

  626. that's where the penny drops

  627. as to who Jesus is.

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  628. Chapters 1 to 8,

  629. almost who he is,

  630. what the kids are doing upstairs.

  631. Chapters 8 to 16,

  632. this is why he came.

  633. Where does this come?

  634. Chapter 10,

  635. it's the beginning of

  636. why he came.

  637. He is everything

  638. that marriage is pointing to.

  639. He is the divine bridegroom

  640. who's come on a rescue mission

  641. to woo

  642. and to win his people

  643. as his bride to himself.

  644. And he does it

  645. because he's going to the cross

  646. to win his people

  647. for himself,

  648. going to the cross

  649. to pay for their sin.

  650. And whoever we are here today,

  651. we've all made mistakes

  652. in this field.

  653. All of us have made mistakes

  654. in this field,

  655. regardless of what your relationship status

  656. is here today.

  657. And this is why he's the one person

  658. that we need to get to.

  659. And he's the one person

  660. that we need to see.

  661. No, our identity is in him

  662. and who he is

  663. and what he's done for us.

  664. That's where we need to get to

  665. because he on the cross

  666. took all of our shame

  667. and our sin,

  668. all of our past regrets,

  669. all of our secret

  670. and hidden mistakes,

  671. all the pain that's wrapped up,

  672. not just in this area,

  673. but every area.

  674. He goes to the cross

  675. to make our problems

  676. and our shame

  677. and our sin

  678. his own.

  679. And whoever you are here today,

  680. that's where we need to get to

  681. because there is forgiveness

  682. and there is gallants of grace

  683. to be found

  684. in Jesus.

  685. Because where you and I

  686. are faithless,

  687. he is faithful.

  688. Human marriage is a pale

  689. and imperfect reflection of

  690. and one that points to

  691. the relationship

  692. that Jesus Christ has

  693. with his church.

  694. For those who are married

  695. here today,

  696. is this not a wonderful reminder,

  697. one that we will never

  698. be able to measure up to

  699. and yet wonderfully

  700. is our call

  701. to make our marriages

  702. about the bigger

  703. and ultimate purpose

  704. of Jesus

  705. and his church.

  706. It's why,

  707. husbands,

  708. if we're here today,

  709. the call to sacrificially

  710. serve

  711. and give yourself

  712. for

  713. and have eyes

  714. only for

  715. our wives

  716. is the call

  717. on us

  718. and it's why

  719. wives,

  720. God calls you

  721. to choose

  722. to follow

  723. the servant-hearted,

  724. loving lead

  725. of your husband

  726. and to submit

  727. to him

  728. as the church

  729. does to Jesus

  730. because we recognize

  731. that there's a bigger

  732. game in which

  733. we're playing.

  734. Right?

  735. And I watched it

  736. over Christmas time,

  737. my aunt,

  738. she cried over

  739. my uncle

  740. when he died

  741. but at the end

  742. of the pain

  743. of half an hour

  744. she walked out

  745. of the room

  746. and they pulled

  747. down the blinds

  748. and do you know

  749. what she said?

  750. I'll see him

  751. in glory

  752. because there's

  753. a bigger game

  754. that we're playing

  755. in,

  756. there's a bigger

  757. marriage that

  758. we're involved

  759. in and whoever

  760. you are here

  761. today,

  762. that wedding

  763. photo at the

  764. end of time,

  765. you will be in it

  766. by your faith

  767. in Christ

  768. when the wedding

  769. photo of Jesus

  770. and his church

  771. happens

  772. and the thing

  773. is you won't

  774. just be a face

  775. in the crowd,

  776. your face

  777. will be caught

  778. up in the face

  779. of the bride

  780. and that's where

  781. this is pointed

  782. to this whole

  783. thing,

  784. your face

  785. will be in that

  786. wedding photo.

  787. Friends,

  788. just as we close,

  789. do you see

  790. how Jesus

  791. calls us

  792. to dance

  793. to a new

  794. tune?

  795. The world

  796. says I'm free

  797. to do what I

  798. want any old

  799. time and I'm

  800. free to be who

  801. I choose any

  802. old time.

  803. Do you want to

  804. know the other

  805. song that's been

  806. in my head all

  807. week from a

  808. generation even

  809. before this?

  810. It's a song by

  811. T-Rex and a

  812. handful of you

  813. will know what

  814. that song is.

  815. They sang the

  816. song, do you

  817. remember it,

  818. Children of the

  819. Revolution?

  820. Remember that song

  821. Children of the

  822. Revolution?

  823. Some of you are

  824. nodding, some of

  825. you don't have a

  826. clue.

  827. But this is

  828. what you are if

  829. you're a Christian

  830. here today and

  831. you adopt this.

  832. You're a child

  833. of the

  834. revolution.

  835. The eternal

  836. sexual revolution

  837. that Jesus

  838. Christ unveiled

  839. 2,000 years

  840. ago in a

  841. Greco-Roman world

  842. that prized

  843. power and

  844. dominance and

  845. saw women and

  846. children as

  847. inferior,

  848. encouraged men

  849. not to hold

  850. back on

  851. unleashing their

  852. sexual desires.

  853. You can imagine

  854. the revolution that

  855. kicked off in

  856. this time.

  857. And it might

  858. just be that the

  859. scales are on the

  860. other side in our

  861. culture today.

  862. But make no

  863. mistake, it is

  864. still as

  865. revolutionary then

  866. as it is today.

  867. So the question

  868. is, friends, do we

  869. love him?

  870. Do we love Jesus?

  871. Will we take him

  872. up at his words

  873. that what he says

  874. his way is the

  875. best?

  876. Will we allow him

  877. to pour gallons

  878. of grace into our

  879. wounds in this

  880. whole area?

  881. And will we take

  882. up our cross,

  883. deny self,

  884. and follow him?

  885. Let me just give

  886. you a real concrete

  887. example as we

  888. finish as to how

  889. I saw this play

  890. out in my time

  891. at Brunsfield.

  892. I remember a

  893. girl here years

  894. ago.

  895. She was engaged

  896. to her soon-to-be

  897. husband.

  898. And as is the

  899. nature of renting

  900. in this city,

  901. he needed to be

  902. out of his flat

  903. before they got

  904. married.

  905. And you can

  906. imagine the

  907. issues that that

  908. caused.

  909. Anyone looking on

  910. would see that the

  911. easy thing for them

  912. to do was just to

  913. move in together.

  914. It would save on

  915. money, tons of

  916. money for two or

  917. three months before

  918. they got married.

  919. All the hassle of

  920. trying to find

  921. somewhere to put

  922. your stuff.

  923. Not to mention the

  924. inconvenience of

  925. rocking up at

  926. someone's house and

  927. saying, can I just

  928. stay over for a

  929. little bit of time?

  930. Why bother?

  931. Well, they made the

  932. call that to do so,

  933. to move in together,

  934. would not only be

  935. potentially damaging

  936. to their witness in

  937. front of the watching

  938. world, they would

  939. make their own

  940. conclusions as to what

  941. they were doing, but

  942. it would just

  943. unnecessarily put them

  944. in temptation's way.

  945. And so they made

  946. the call, no, we're

  947. going to live in

  948. separate places until

  949. we get married.

  950. And it cost them, it

  951. cost them money, it

  952. cost them the

  953. inconvenience of

  954. having to do it, but

  955. they wanted to do it

  956. to show the world,

  957. actually our lives are

  958. caught up in the

  959. truer marriage.

  960. And we want to

  961. honour him right at

  962. the beginning of our

  963. married life.

  964. But what a powerful

  965. statement to the

  966. watching world.

  967. not just that we

  968. honour Jesus, but

  969. that we understand

  970. the bigger story

  971. which God has

  972. called us to in

  973. him.

  974. The one of which

  975. the Apostle Paul,

  976. another single man,

  977. could see is a

  978. profound mystery.

  979. And it's a mystery

  980. because it points to

  981. the profound

  982. marriage between

  983. Jesus Christ and

  984. his church.

  985. Now we're going to

  986. move into a time of

  987. communion in just a

  988. minute, we'll sing

  989. one song and then

  990. do it.

  991. But I hope this

  992. just lends itself

  993. so naturally to

  994. that being a

  995. fitting climax to

  996. our time together

  997. this morning.

  998. Because that is

  999. exactly what we're

  1000. celebrating, isn't

  1001. it?

  1002. As we take the

  1003. bread and the

  1004. wine, we're

  1005. celebrating the

  1006. union that we

  1007. have with our

  1008. divine husband, with

  1009. Jesus.

  1010. Friends, I recognise

  1011. that this would have

  1012. been a painful topic

  1013. for many of us

  1014. today and that it

  1015. really is a genuine

1016. offer if you want to

  1017. chat or to pray.

  1018. And again, just

  1019. maybe to anyone

  1020. sitting around

  1021. about you to do

  1022. that.

  1023. Again, we just want

  1024. to foster that

  1025. culture where we're

  1026. just praying together

  1027. is just a natural

  1028. thing that we do.

  1029. But I'm going to

  1030. pray just now.

  1031. I'm just going to

  1032. pray particularly that

  1033. God would be with

1034. us as we journey on

  1035. this morning.

  1036. So let us pray.

  1037. Amen.

  1038. And so Father, I

  1039. just pray, Lord, that

  1040. by your Holy Spirit,

  1041. Lord, that you would

  1042. be bringing words

  1043. right now, I take

  1044. it, of challenge

  1045. and perhaps of

  1046. painful prodding in

  1047. areas where we need

  1048. to change.

  1049. Oh, but Father, would

  1050. he also be bringing

  1051. words of comfort,

  1052. and words of

  1053. grace.

  1054. Father, as you, as

  1055. we've looked at this

  1056. morning, speak those

  1057. words into some of

  1058. the most painful and

  1059. sensitive of places.

1060. So Lord, I pray that

  1061. wherever we are today,

  1062. Lord, that we

  1063. wouldn't leave this

1064. place with a spirit of

  1065. judgment or condemnation

  1066. upon us.

  1067. But Lord, we would

  1068. leave this morning

  1069. having met with the

  1070. gracious King, Jesus

  1071. Christ.

  1072. gracious Father, we

  1073. just commit ourselves

  1074. into your hands, the

1075. hands that hold us, the

  1076. hands and heart that

  1077. love us.

  1078. We just pray these

  1079. things to you, our

  1080. good Father, in Jesus

  1081. name.

  1082. Amen.
