  1. Thanks so much, Ian and Susan.

  2. As you've probably worked out, my name's Archie, pastor in training here.

  3. If you do want to have that open in front of you, John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  4. it's on page 1069 of the Pew Bible.

  5. So do get that open in front of you.

  6. And as you do that, let me pray.

  7. Heavenly Father, by your Holy Spirit,

  8. in the hearts of each and every one of us,

  9. in my heart, would you do your work to open our eyes and our ears

  10. that we might see Jesus this morning for who he says that he is,

  11. that we might hear and believe,

  12. and that we might desire him for your glory.

  13. Amen.

  14. I wonder who you think Jesus is.

  15. Is he a prophet?

  16. A good man?

  17. A teacher?

  18. A political revolutionary?

  19. The son of God?

  20. Whoever Jesus was, we know history would tell us

  21. that two millennia ago he died hanging on a cross.

  22. And the claim is, of course, that he rose again the first Easter.

  23. But who do you think that he was?

  24. And maybe more importantly for us this morning,

  25. what do you think or desire that he would do for you today?

  26. That's where we're headed this morning.

  27. Who is Jesus?

  28. And what has he got for you?

  29. Let's begin with a story.

  30. Adolf Beck was a Norwegian man living in London in the 1890s.

  31. He was a short, stout, gray-haired man, and there he is, epic moustache.

  32. And on an ordinary cold December morning,

  33. he stepped out of his house only to be blocked by a young woman.

  34. This young woman accused him of having stolen from her a watch and some jewellery.

  35. Outraged, he brushed her aside.

  36. He went on his way.

  37. But she followed him and continued to make this accusation known.

  38. Before long, Beck appealed to a nearby policeman,

  39. claiming that this woman was harassing him.

  40. The woman demanded that the policeman arrest Beck.

  41. And so they were both taken down to the station.

  42. And the story was told.

  43. She claimed that he had tricked her by claiming to be a wealthy man in order to woo her,

  44. and then borrowing her jewellery and her watch to go and get more expensive equivalents made in her size.

  45. And it turned out that over the last two years,

  46. 22 women had reported almost exactly the same sort of crime.

  47. And when they were asked to pick the man from a lineup,

  48. they all accused Beck.

  49. And so at trial, he was found guilty,

  50. sentenced to seven years in prison.

  51. Five years later, he was released on parole.

  52. But then just three years after that,

  53. a woman reported a crime identical to those that Beck was originally convicted of.

  54. And so he was arrested again.

  55. But at this point, Wilhelm Meyer enters our story.

  56. Because this time, while Beck was in prison,

  57. Meyer was caught red-handed,

  58. caught committing a crime with the same unusual pattern as those Beck had been convicted of.

  59. He was also short and stout and grey-haired and had an epic moustache.

  60. Turned out, Meyer had been the culprit all along.

  61. And Beck was given a pardon.

  62. He was given £5,000, something like £20,000 in today's money.

  63. Not sure I'd take £20,000 for five years in prison, but there you go.

  64. It's a terrible case, isn't it, of mistaken identity.

  65. It almost sounds like something from an Arthur Conan Doyle novel.

  66. And it's a familiar storyline, the mistaken identity storyline.

  67. Maybe you know it from some of these films, like The Big Lebowski,

  68. or The Life of Brian, or Dumb and Dumber, or North by Northwest.

  69. It's a gripping storyline.

  70. Often it's a hilarious storyline.

  71. But it can be deathly serious.

  72. I mean, it was pretty rubbish for Adolf Beck.

  73. It's even more rubbish for those over the years who have been sentenced to death

  74. and having been executed turned out to be innocent.

  75. If you're the prosecution or the judge or the jury or whatever,

  76. ensuring that you don't have a case of mistaken identity is super important.

  77. Here's the point.

  78. Getting identity right, there is no case in which this is more important than with Jesus.

  79. Because in those films, the consequences of mistaken identity are often hilarious.

  80. In the case of Beck and Maya, the consequences are pretty brutal.

  81. On death row, it can be life or death.

  82. Well, here, with Jesus, it is eternal life that is at stake.

  83. If you've got that Bible open in front of you,

  84. if you don't, get it open at chapter 6 and have a look at verse 40.

  85. I know this isn't in the passage that we've read,

  86. but it's sort of a preview of where we're going in the next couple of weeks.

  87. Verse 40.

  88. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him

  89. shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

  90. You see what's at stake here?

  91. The claim is that Jesus is offering eternal life.

  92. And so we've got to ask, who is this Jesus?

  93. And what does it mean to believe in him?

  94. Even as we begin, who is Jesus?

  95. But you know, the passage that Susan has read for us this morning goes even further than that.

  96. It's not just who is Jesus,

  97. but what would we desire that he would do for us today?

  98. We've seen over the last few months in John's Gospel

  99. that Jesus has gathered quite the following.

  100. Have a look in verse 2 of chapter 6.

  101. It's a great crowd.

  102. And why is it that they're following him still in verse 2?

  103. It's because they've seen the signs.

  104. We've seen this sort of language before from John

  105. as people see the signs that Jesus is performing,

  106. and they're amazed, and they follow him.

  107. But we've got to ask, and John is encouraging us to ask,

  108. what is it that they want from Jesus?

  109. We'll see in this chapter, again, they see Jesus perform this sign,

  110. and they make it pretty clear what they want from him.

  111. But then Jesus gets to teaching.

  112. This is really a preview of the next couple of weeks.

  113. He tells them why he's come.

  114. And see how they react.

  115. Sorry, I know we're jumping about a bit, but down in verse 60.

  116. See how they react.

  117. On hearing it, many of his disciples, that's not the 12,

  118. that's just those who are following him.

  119. Many of his disciples said, this is a hard teaching.

  120. Who can accept it?

  121. And the kicker in verse 66.

  122. From this time on, many of his disciples turned back

  123. and no longer followed him.

  124. This teaching from Jesus that we're going to see over the next few weeks

  125. that reveals what his signs point to

  126. is like a church growth strategy gone very badly wrong.

  127. From a crowd in verse 1

  128. to many no longer following him here in verse 66.

  129. And so I guess a warning for us over the next few weeks.

  130. If we're willing to be really honest with ourselves,

  131. I think this might get quite uncomfortable.

  132. As we ask, who is Jesus?

  133. Like, who do we really believe that he is?

  134. And what do I desire that he would do for me?

  135. Why am I here?

  136. Like, what brings me to church?

  137. Why am I following him?

  138. Because our answer to those questions, I think,

  139. might be challenged by John over the next couple of weeks.

  140. Let's dive into the text then with those questions in the back of our mind

  141. and see how this story works.

  142. In verses 1 to 3, John sort of sets the scene.

  143. In verse 1, we get the where this happens.

  144. It's on the far shore of the Sea of Galilee.

  145. The far shore, i.e. from the scene before.

  146. They're now on the other side of the sea.

  147. That is the Sea of Tiberias.

  148. It's quite strange for John to give us the Roman name of the sea there,

  149. the Sea of Tiberias.

  150. Just keep that in your back pocket for later.

  151. But this is where it's happening.

  152. And more specifically, it's up on a mountainside in verse 3.

  153. And then we also get the when in verse 4.

  154. The Jewish Passover festival was near.

  155. Why does John record these details as he sets the scene?

  156. I mean, I take it is because this is when and where it happened.

  157. But it's not just random.

  158. The original readers of this gospel and the people there at the time,

  159. their minds would have gone straight to the Exodus here,

  160. to Moses, to that story that Ian has just read for us.

  161. If you know the history of Israel, they were slaves in Egypt.

  162. God raises up Moses to be a prophet and a leader for them,

  163. to lead them out of slavery.

  164. And that's where the Passover festival comes from,

  165. as God provides away the Passover lamb for his judgment to come on to Egypt

  166. and not on to his people, the Israelites.

  167. And more than that, the imagery of mountainside is also straight out of that Exodus.

  168. And mountains come to have this significance for Israel.

  169. It was on a mountain that Moses encountered God,

  170. where God reveals his name to Moses, the I am who I am.

  171. Again, keep that in your back pocket for later.

  172. But for now, back in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  173. the people who have followed Jesus,

  174. what do they desire Jesus to do?

  175. Well, in those first few verses,

  176. all the stars are aligning for big, Exodus-like,

  177. led-by-Moses things to happen.

  178. And then we get this sign.

  179. See in verse 5,

  180. the people, they have nothing to eat.

  181. And it's such a big crowd in verse 7

  182. that it would take more than half a year's wages to feed them.

  183. And if you've got a slightly different translation,

  184. you might just have 200 denarii there.

  185. The translators of the NIV don't bother with the unit.

  186. They just tell us rightly,

  187. and actually probably quite helpfully,

  188. that it's more than half a year's wages for these people.

  189. In other words,

  190. there's no way to feed this crowd of people.

  191. And then this boy appears in verse 9,

  192. and he has five small barley loaves and two small fish.

  193. Not exactly fine dining,

  194. but a pretty ordinary meal in the ancient Near East.

  195. And notice,

  196. John makes sure that we know

  197. that they're just very small loaves and small fish.

  198. Definitely not enough,

  199. in other words,

  200. to feed 5,000 people.

  201. And I guess we know what happens next.

  202. In verse 11,

  203. Jesus takes the loaves,

  204. he gives thanks,

  205. and everyone eats as much as they wanted.

  206. In fact,

  207. in verses 12 and 13,

  208. there's plenty left over,

  209. and the people are pretty impressed.

  210. Notice how they react in verse 14.

  211. Surely,

  212. this is the prophet who has come into the world.

  213. And then they try and make him king by force.

  214. They're impressed.

  215. We'll come back to that.

  216. Exactly what they desire Jesus to be.

  217. But then we get this second miracle.

  218. Notice it's the same day.

  219. It's in the evening.

  220. But this time,

  221. it's only the disciples who are there.

  222. In verse 15,

  223. Jesus has disappeared up a mountain again,

  224. and they're on their way back to Capernaum,

  225. back to the other side of the lake without him.

  226. Have a look at verse 17.

  227. It's dark.

  228. Verse 18,

  229. it's stormy,

  230. and they row out onto the lake about four or five miles in verse 19.

  231. In other words,

  232. they're not in the shallows anymore,

  233. and things are getting pretty hairy.

  234. And yet,

  235. there's Jesus,

  236. in verse 19,

  237. walking on the water.

  238. No wonder,

  239. they're frightened.

  240. And he tells them,

  241. doesn't he,

  242. not to be afraid.

  243. They bring him into the boat,

  244. and then all of a sudden,

  245. in verse 21,

  246. they've reached the other side.

  247. That's the story.

  248. What a day.

  249. Right?

  250. What a day.

  251. But what are we to make of it?

  252. What are these two signs supposed to point to?

  253. Well,

  254. hopefully this will be helpful as we unpack the text under these two headings.

  255. Here are the headings.

  256. The king they really wanted,

  257. and the king they really needed.

  258. So first,

  259. the king they really wanted.

  260. Two things I think John wants us to see that this crowd wants,

  261. that they want Jesus to be for them.

  262. Firstly,

  263. a prophet king,

  264. and secondly,

  265. a military king.

  266. A prophet king.

  267. Again,

  268. we've seen the Moses imagery in verses three and four,

  269. the echoes of Exodus,

  270. as Jesus goes up a mountain,

  271. and it's Passover,

  272. and then Jesus performs this sign,

  273. providing bread for the people to eat.

  274. Providing,

  275. in verse 11,

  276. abundantly,

  277. so that each would have had as much as they wanted.

  278. Again,

  279. if you were listening,

  280. as Ian read from Exodus earlier,

  281. the people have been led out of slavery in Egypt.

  282. They're hungry.

  283. They grumble to Moses.

  284. Moses pleads with God.

  285. God sends them quail,

  286. but he also sends them manna,

  287. bread from heaven.

  288. And did you notice the way that it was described in those verses?

  289. They eat each of them as much as they need.

  290. Do you see in verse 14 who the people think Jesus is then?

  291. Not God himself providing the manna,

  292. but the prophet who has come into the world.

  293. They think Jesus is a new Moses,

  294. and that's what they want from him.

  295. A man who would provide for their physical hunger,

  296. their desires,

  297. by pleading to God on their behalf.

  298. A prophet king.

  299. And they also want him to be a military king.

  300. See back in verse 1,

  301. John gave us that Roman name for the Sea of Galilee,

  302. the Sea of Tiberias,

  303. because Galilee was part of the Roman Empire.

  304. Tiberias was the Roman emperor,

  305. the ruler,

  306. the monarch,

  307. and so this lake has been named after him.

  308. And John wants his readers to be thinking in terms of worldly power,

  309. and specifically Roman power.

  310. Why?

  311. Well, just notice two more details in the text.

  312. In verse 10,

  313. how many people are mentioned?

  314. It's actually quite hard to tell,

  315. isn't it,

  316. in verse 10,

  317. because it just says 5,000 men.

  318. And maybe that's recorded that way because it was a patriarchal society,

  319. and it's just numbered by the heads of the household.

  320. And really,

  321. we're meant to think many more than that,

  322. 10,

  323. maybe 20,000 people.

  324. But I wonder if there's something more going on here.

  325. See,

  326. a Roman legion,

  327. that's a unit of fighting men,

  328. numbered 5,000 men.

  329. I don't think that's an accident.

  330. In other words,

  331. this crowd is a very good number of men to be led by a military king.

  332. Indeed,

  333. in verse 15,

  334. Jesus knows that that is their intention,

  335. to make him a king by force.

  336. So who do they think Jesus is?

  337. What do they desire that he would do for them?

  338. I think he's a military king to challenge the occupying Romans.

  339. Now,

  340. the people here,

  341. they're not doing anything actually all that bad,

  342. certainly nothing evil.

  343. They've been waiting for the promised prophet king,

  344. the new Moses,

  345. for centuries.

  346. And they've been waiting for a military king to rescue them from Roman occupation.

  347. This is the king that they really want.

  348. I hope we're still asking ourselves the question,

  349. who is Jesus?

  350. Who do we want him to be?

  351. What do we desire that he would do for us today?

  352. This is who they think Jesus is.

  353. And this is who they really want him to be.

  354. But for John,

  355. and this is our second heading,

  356. this is the king that they really needed.

  357. See,

  358. Jesus was a prophet king.

  359. He came with a message from God.

  360. That's really what a prophet was.

  361. And he was a military king in the sense that he came to defeat God's enemies.

  362. Not that enemy,

  363. not the Romans,

  364. but the final enemy,

  365. death.

  366. And the reason that he could do that is because of who he is.

  367. As we'll see,

  368. the king of the universe.

  369. Notice the imagery in this second scene.

  370. We saw in verse 18,

  371. it's a stormy sea,

  372. and the wind is blowing.

  373. We've talked about it before,

  374. but the sea,

  375. especially the stormy sea,

  376. it's a sort of anti-God chaos image in the Bible.

  377. Think back to Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  378. the very first page of the Bible.

  379. Boom,

  380. creation happens.

  381. And the spirit of God,

  382. literally the wind of God,

  383. is hovering over the water.

  384. And from that moment on,

  385. you have all of these God and water moments where water is chaotic,

  386. but God,

  387. the king of the universe,

  388. is in control.

  389. I think of them,

  390. Noah and the flood,

  391. the Exodus again,

  392. as they part the Red Sea,

  393. the story of Jonah,

  394. and Job and the Leviathan,

  395. the entry into the promised land through the river Jordan.

  396. Water in all of those scenes is supposed to depict chaos,

  397. and only the God of the universe can command it.

  398. Now look at verse 19 again.

  399. Jesus is walking on the water.

  400. That is a massive statement from John.

  401. For only one who is fully God and fully man could do that.

  402. Only God can command the waters in this way,

  403. and only man can walk on them in this way.

  404. Next week,

  405. we're going to hear a song from Kids Church,

  406. at least I think we are,

  407. entitled,

  408. Totally God,

  409. Totally Man.

  410. And the chorus goes like this.

  411. To save the world,

  412. fulfill God's plan,

  413. he had to be

  414. totally God,

  415. totally man.

  416. The people in this story,

  417. they wanted Jesus to be their prophet king,

  418. and their military king,

  419. but he was so much more than that.

  420. Totally man,

  421. yes,

  422. but totally God,

  423. the king of the universe.

  424. And he needed to be both.

  425. Here's why.

  426. Human beings,

  427. that's me and you,

  428. we were created by a loving God

  429. to exist in a loving relationship with him.

  430. We walked away from that relationship,

  431. we rebelled against him,

  432. and there was and is a consequence for that.

  433. The loving relationship broken,

  434. and death is the end of that story.

  435. A consequence then,

  436. that only a human could face.

  437. For God cannot die,

  438. and only a human could die.

  439. See,

  440. a price that only a human could pay.

  441. And so Jesus had to be a human to pay that price.

  442. He also had to live the perfect life

  443. in relationship with the father

  444. that we haven't lived,

  445. because only then could he pay the price

  446. on our behalf.

  447. For a man who had not lived the perfect life

  448. would have his own price to pay.

  449. Instead,

  450. Jesus,

  451. the innocent man,

  452. pays ours.

  453. He had to be totally man.

  454. But to do that,

  455. he also has to be totally God.

  456. For only by his own divine power

  457. could he bear the weight

  458. of the sins of the world on his shoulders.

  459. And only by his own divine power

  460. could he rise again

  461. and secure eternal life with him.

  462. My rugby coach once said this.

  463. He once said this.

  464. We'd been pretty badly beaten on the Saturday.

  465. We were doing some video analysis

  466. of the match on the Tuesday night.

  467. And he really wanted us to see the good

  468. that we'd done despite being beaten.

  469. He said this.

  470. You are never as good as you think you are

  471. when you win.

  472. And you are never as bad

  473. as you think you are when you lose.

  474. That is gold.

  475. I immediately wrote that down.

  476. Not because it's true about rugby,

  477. though it is,

  478. but because I knew that one day

  479. it would be a really helpful

  480. gospel illustration.

  481. It's true.

  482. It is true.

  483. And here's a Christian way

  484. of putting something very similar.

  485. Graham, our pastor,

  486. tweeted this earlier this week

  487. from Jerry Bridges.

  488. Your worst days are never so bad

  489. that you are beyond the reach

  490. of God's grace.

  491. And your best days are never so good

  492. that you are beyond the need

  493. of God's grace.

  494. Aren't those wonderful truths?

  495. No wonder how bad you think

  496. you are this morning.

  497. You are not out of reach

  498. of God's grace.

  499. No matter how good you think

  500. you are this morning,

  501. you still desperately need

  502. God's grace.

  503. And because he is totally God

  504. and totally man,

  505. he can offer us forgiveness

  506. and freedom

  507. and forever life with him.

  508. This is the king

  509. that they really needed.

  510. But of course,

  511. the people in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  512. they don't know it.

  513. And this sign is supposed

  514. to show them.

  515. We'll do more of this next week

  516. and what a time it will be

  517. to do it on Easter Sunday.

  518. But have a look down

  519. in verse 20.

  520. Jesus is dropping breadcrumbs

  521. for his disciples here.

  522. He says,

  523. it is I,

  524. maybe more helpfully

  525. and literally,

  526. I am.

  527. This is precisely the name

  528. that God reveals

  529. to Moses on the mountain.

  530. Jesus is saying

  531. to his disciples,

  532. it's me.

  533. Don't you get it?

  534. The I am,

  535. the king of the universe.

  536. What does that have to do

  537. with the multiplication

  538. of bread?

  539. Well, have a look

  540. at verse 35.

  541. Again,

  542. more of this next week,

  543. but verse 35,

  544. I am

  545. the bread of life.

  546. Jesus isn't just

  547. providing bread for them

  548. to satisfy their physical hunger.

  549. It is to point to himself

  550. and who he really is.

  551. And ultimately,

  552. this is what is really on offer.

  553. Him.

  554. Back in verse 20,

  555. it is I,

  556. I am.

  557. Do not be afraid.

  558. He's saying the king

  559. of the universe is with you.

  560. You have him.

  561. You don't need to be frightened.

  562. I am

  563. is here.

  564. This is the king

  565. they really needed.

  566. The king who would fulfill

  567. their greatest need

  568. to pay the price

  569. for their sin,

  570. not just so that

  571. they might be forgiven,

  572. not just so that

  573. they might get a free pass

  574. to eternity,

  575. but why?

  576. So that they might get him.

  577. And here we really get

  578. to the point.

  579. Who is Jesus?

  580. And what do we desire

  581. that he would do for us today?

  582. Right?

  583. It's not just

  584. who do we think Jesus is.

  585. That is important.

  586. But who do we want

  587. Jesus to be?

  588. There are those,

  589. maybe this is you,

  590. who really want Jesus

  591. to just be a prophet.

  592. That's what Islam

  593. would say about Jesus.

  594. But actually,

  595. I think quite a lot

  596. of my friends think

  597. about something similar.

  598. Like he was probably

  599. a good guy,

  600. a religious sort of man,

  601. taught some good moral stuff,

  602. but they just rip God

  603. right out of it.

  604. Basically just a prophet,

  605. a teacher.

  606. Maybe that's you.

  607. There are those,

  608. maybe this is you,

  609. who primarily want Jesus

  610. to be the social justice guy.

  611. This is where lots of

  612. modern liberal Bible scholars

  613. would go with this.

  614. This isn't a miracle at all.

  615. Again,

  616. they just rip God

  617. right out of it.

  618. Instead,

  619. Jesus got the boy

  620. to share

  621. and then others

  622. just copied him.

  623. And so those who had plenty

  624. were giving to those

  625. who had none.

  626. And everyone is sharing.

  627. It's social justice,

  628. Jesus.

  629. Maybe that's you.

  630. There are those,

  631. maybe this is you,

  632. who really want Jesus

  633. to be like a vending machine

  634. of blessings,

  635. giving us all that we want,

  636. answering all of our prayers,

  637. often with a real focus

  638. on stuff in this life.

  639. Might be silly,

  640. practical stuff like,

  641. please Jesus,

  642. help me find the remote

  643. that I've lost.

  644. It might be deeper stuff

  645. like healing

  646. and life transformation

  647. and peace

  648. or help passing your exams

  649. or whatever else it is.

  650. Jesus giving us

  651. all we want today.

  652. It's vending machine Jesus.

  653. Maybe that's you.

  654. There are those,

  655. and I guess this is more of us,

  656. maybe most of us in the room,

  657. who really want Jesus

  658. to be the get out of hell free card.

  659. The get to heaven card.

  660. The get resurrection life card.

  661. The grace filled,

  662. forgiveness giving Jesus.

  663. We want Jesus to be the one

  664. who died in our place

  665. so that we can live forever.

  666. Maybe that's you.

  667. Now hear me loud and clear.

  668. Jesus is all of those things.

  669. He is a prophet.

  670. His teachings are incredible,

  671. transformational.

  672. Our whole society

  673. is really built on them.

  674. He is the ultimate

  675. social justice guy.

  676. He cares about the downs

  677. and the outs

  678. more than anyone in history,

  679. those in desperate need.

  680. He does answer prayer

  681. and give us all that we need.

  682. And of course,

  683. he offers us eternal life.

  684. This is Jesus.

  685. But the irony here,

  686. because all of that

  687. is from this angle,

  688. what can he do for me?

  689. None of that is about him.

  690. It's about us

  691. and what we can get from him.

  692. They're wonderful things,

  693. wonderful promises,

  694. but the very best thing

  695. on offer here

  696. is him.

  697. Dying on the cross,

  698. he gives us himself.

  699. But we're about to share

  700. in the bread and the cup together.

  701. We often call that communion, right?

  702. And there was a time

  703. when that language,

  704. communion with Jesus,

  705. didn't just mean

  706. eating bread and drinking wine.

  707. The Puritan John Owen

  708. wrote an amazing book,

  709. Communion with God.

  710. And there,

  711. he wasn't writing about

  712. this sacrament

  713. of bread and wine at all.

  714. He was writing about

  715. relationship.

  716. It was just common language

  717. for relationship.

  718. In that sacrament,

  719. God is communicating

  720. something about himself

  721. to us as we come

  722. to the bread and the cup together.

  723. But I think we need

  724. to know this morning

  725. that the primary way

  726. that this communicative

  727. relationship between

  728. creator and creature

  729. happens as he reveals himself

  730. to us by his word.

  731. In Deuteronomy chapter 8,

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  732. reflecting on the bread

  733. in the wilderness

  734. exodus thing

  735. that we've been looking at,

  736. Moses says this,

  737. man does not live

  738. on bread alone,

  739. but on every word

  740. that comes from

  741. the mouth of the Lord.

  742. If you've been here

  743. as we've gone through

  744. John's gospel,

  745. maybe you remember

  746. how John uses that language

  747. in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  748. The word became flesh

  749. and made his dwelling

  750. among us.

  751. In other words,

  752. Jesus is the word.

  753. This book that we call

  754. the Bible is God's word

  755. to us

  756. and that his word

  757. to us is Jesus.

  758. It's all about him.

  759. Every passage of scripture

  760. is about Jesus.

  761. And so if you want

  762. to invest in your

  763. relationship with him,

  764. you've got to start here.

  765. Don't run away

  766. from your Bible

  767. into the woods

  768. or into the mountains

  769. and expect to find

  770. Jesus there

  771. apart from his word.

  772. Don't hear me wrongly

  773. as I say that.

  774. There is nothing wrong

  775. with seeking God

  776. and his creation

  777. or through art

  778. or creativity

  779. or music

  780. or good food

  781. or whatever else.

  782. We're all wired differently.

  783. But would you let

  784. the Bible be the place

  785. where you go

  786. to commune with him?

  787. For man does not live

  788. on bread alone,

  789. but on every word

  790. that comes from

  791. the mouth of the Lord.

  792. For what it's worth,

  793. for me,

  794. that looks very often

  795. like getting up

  796. a little earlier

  797. than I'd like to.

  798. I don't always do this,

  799. but I try to.

  800. Making an unnecessarily

  801. expensive cup of coffee,

  802. sitting in my favorite chair,

  803. and just reading

  804. for 10 or 15 minutes.

  805. Some of you are like,

  806. are you kidding?

  807. I've got two kids

  808. under five.

  809. That is not happening.

  810. And that's fine.

  811. How you can access

  812. God's word

  813. might be very different

  814. from that.

  815. But make a habit

  816. of engaging

  817. with God's word.

  818. Turn it into a habit.

  819. It becomes easier

  820. and easier

  821. like any habit

  822. the more that you do it.

  823. We began with this story

  824. of Adolf Beck

  825. and Wilhelm Meyer

  826. where the mistaken identity

  827. storyline

  828. had real consequences.

  829. And that's true.

  830. Who Jesus is,

  831. his identity,

  832. is just so important.

  833. In fact,

  834. it's of first importance

  835. because eternal life

  836. is on the line.

  837. But more than that,

  838. it's not only

  839. who Jesus is,

  840. but what we would desire

  841. he would do for us.

  842. It was so encouraging

  843. to hear Bogdan's testimony

  844. as he was baptized

  845. last Sunday.

  846. He said lots of

  847. encouraging things.

  848. But what struck me

  849. most was this line.

  850. As he explained

  851. the hardships

  852. that he'd faced

  853. and his time

  854. in hospital

  855. and how through

  856. all of that

  857. he had turned up

  858. to church and prayed,

  859. but he really knew

  860. that he was seeking Jesus

  861. for what Jesus could do

  862. for him.

  863. And then this line,

  864. as he realized

  865. how empty

  866. that sort of religion was,

  867. he turned to Jesus

  868. and in Bogdan's own words,

  869. this might sound crazy,

  870. but it was the start

  871. of a relationship.

  872. Maybe that does sound

  873. crazy to you,

  874. but that's my story too.

  875. If you're a Christian

  876. in the room today,

  877. I guess it's yours.

  878. If I'm really honest,

  879. Jesus was just another way

  880. for me to get the things

  881. that I wanted in life.

  882. Not necessarily bad things

  883. and not necessarily

  884. material things,

  885. but things for me.

  886. Peace and community

  887. and approval

  888. and forgiveness,

  889. even eternal life.

  890. Good things,

  891. but the offer

  892. is so much more

  893. than those things.

  894. The offer here,

  895. what Jesus gives us,

  896. what he is offering,

  897. is himself.

  898. And he's the king

  899. that we really need

  900. this morning.

  901. Let's pray.

  902. Heavenly Father,

  903. we thank you so much

  904. for this wonderful passage

  905. of your words.

  906. We thank you that as we

  907. have spent time in it together,

  908. you have been at work

  909. by your Holy Spirit

  910. pointing us to your son.

  911. Lord, we thank you so much

  912. for him.

  913. We thank you as we

  914. come up to Easter

  915. and celebrate all that he did

  916. in dying and rising again.

  917. Lord, we thank you

  918. that we can

  919. have a relationship

  920. with him

  921. because of what

  922. he has done.

  923. Lord, as we

  924. think of all the

  925. wonderful things

  926. that he does for us

  927. and all the wonderful

  928. things that he promises

  929. to do for us

  930. in this life

  931. and the next,

  932. would you help us

  933. to keep our eyes

  934. fixed on him

  935. who is the prize

  936. and help us

  937. to value Jesus

  938. above all things

  939. in this life

  940. and above all other

  941. things that you

  942. might give us.

  943. Help us by your

  944. Holy Spirit

  945. to desire him

  946. for we pray

  947. in his precious name.

  948. Amen.
