  1. Okay, good morning everyone. It's lovely to see you here today.

  2. Lovely to meet some new faces as well. You are so welcome here today.

  3. My name is Graham and I'm the pastor of the church here.

  4. So what I'd love you to do is to open your Bible and come back to John chapter 8

    John 8 chapter mention

  5. and this is where we're going to be in these verses today. Wonderful

  6. verses that have so much to teach us this morning and I've

  7. just been so thrilled and challenged to get into this today.

  8. But let's pray, will we, before we begin and then we'll get in.

  9. Father, I think of the words of Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  10. and what Paul would write, the plea to his readers

  11. to be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

  12. Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world.

  13. Father, we're so aware of the many things that we bring in here today.

  14. the worries, the concerns, the doubts, the questions,

  15. the grievances, the heartaches.

  16. Father, we pray that you would help fix our eyes

  17. on the one who's right at the centre of this passage,

  18. who holds out the offer of eternal life to us this morning.

  19. Father, we pray in your spirit's power

  20. and in the wonderful name of your son.

  21. Amen.

  22. Amen.

  23. So, with John chapter 8 open in front of you,

    John 8 chapter mention

  24. whoever you are here today,

  25. here is the central admission

  26. that this passage, as Jesus speaks,

  27. he invites us all to embrace today.

  28. And it's an admission that,

  29. according to research done by British car insurance company,

  30. Sheila's Wheels,

  31. remember them?

  32. Bonds are car insurance deals.

  33. According to them,

  34. the male of the species is less likely to make than the female.

  35. And it's an admission that our refusal to admit

  36. means that the average driver in the UK

  37. drives and get this,

  38. it's 276 miles more than they need to every single year.

  39. You with me?

  40. What's the admission?

  41. I don't know where I'm going.

  42. Okay?

  43. Asking for directions.

  44. You click it on, guys.

  45. I don't know where I'm going.

  46. Now, here's the question.

  47. When was the last time you put up your hands

  48. and admitted that?

  49. Yeah?

  50. You're lost.

  51. I don't know where I'm going.

  52. It's not a phrase, is it,

  53. that comes naturally to any of us.

  54. Because I think we live in a world

  55. where we're taught

  56. that we should know where we're going.

  57. Yeah?

  58. We love to think that we know where we're going.

  59. And the cultural air that we breathe in and out every day

  60. trains us to think that today,

  61. with all the opportunities that our generation enjoys,

  62. that we've got this.

  63. Okay?

  64. It's the first song you hear when you go into Disneyland.

  65. That lovely lullaby from Cinderella.

  66. No matter how your heart is grieving,

  67. if you keep on believing,

  68. the dream that you wish will come true.

  69. And that sounds very nice, doesn't it?

  70. It's lovely.

  71. But I don't think it's true for the vast majority of people

  72. who live in this world.

  73. Right?

  74. We drove in there past Sainsbury's,

  75. just at the Grange,

  76. and there's the lady sitting begging for money.

  77. I don't think that's coming true for her.

  78. And yet I wonder if you're convinced this morning

  79. if it's true for you.

  80. Let me give you two figures that I learned of this week

  81. that maybe will help us think

  82. on whether the things that the world tells us

  83. where life is to be found

  84. are actually where life is to be found.

  85. Here's the first one.

  86. Here's the number.

  87. 400.

  88. Any idea what that is?

  89. You won't?

  90. Let me tell you.

  91. That's the number of hours worth of video content

  92. that are uploaded to YouTube

  93. every single minute of every single day.

  94. Loving that?

  95. 400 hours worth of content.

  96. Podcasts, music, opinions, debates.

  97. We are a generation who is rich on information.

  98. In fact, I read a statistic this week

  99. that in the year 2018,

  100. 90% of the information we had as a species

  101. was ours only in the last two years.

  102. You got that?

  103. So 2016 to 2018,

  104. 90% of the information that we have

  105. as a species came in those two years.

  106. We are a generation that is rich on information.

  107. And yet here's the other figure for you.

  108. It's 9.4.

  109. So according to my friend

  110. that works with young people up and down the country

  111. as part of the Keswick Ministries team,

  112. that's the percentage of children

  113. aged between 3 and 17

  114. in our nation

  115. who were clinically diagnosed

  116. with anxiety

  117. between 2016 and 2019.

  118. That's heartbreaking, isn't it?

  119. If you think about it,

  120. with three little girls.

  121. That's heartbreaking.

  122. And a bit of the numbers now,

  123. since 2019,

  124. will be well higher than that.

  125. So overwhelmed

  126. are an emerging generation

  127. with reasons to be nervous

  128. about the future

  129. and burdened

  130. by that crushing pressure

  131. to make their life

  132. mean something.

  133. As M people sing away

  134. in the background,

  135. what have you done today

  136. to make you feel proud?

  137. Now we know

  138. that it's not quite a straight line

  139. between the first statistic

  140. and the second statistic, okay?

  141. It's way more complicated than that.

  142. But we have to say

  143. that those statistics

  144. are hugely revealing.

  145. And perhaps they suggest

  146. that the answers

  147. that we think we have

  148. in the world today

  149. from both within

  150. and without ourselves

  151. aren't quite as freeing

  152. as we perhaps think they are.

  153. Friends,

  154. when was the last time

  155. that you said to yourself,

  156. I don't know where I'm going?

  157. And here's why I want you to know

  158. that according to the Bible,

  159. to embrace that confession,

  160. to embrace that admission

  161. is not a sign of failure.

  162. On the contrary,

  163. that that is actually

  164. the beginning of wisdom.

  165. Why?

  166. Well, because when we begin

  167. that journey down the road

  168. that says,

  169. I don't know where I am going,

  170. standing at the other end

  171. of that road

  172. is an open-armed Jesus Christ

  173. whose words offer

  174. such deep refreshment

  175. and wonderful liberation

  176. for our thirsty

  177. and our weary human souls.

  178. Now, this is the claim here

  179. he makes today.

  180. That isn't a complicated claim.

  181. But boy, if we're up

  182. for seeing it today,

  183. it is a life-giving claim.

  184. And here it is,

  185. verse 12 of chapter 8,

  186. Jesus says,

  187. I am,

  188. taking the divine name of God there,

  189. we'll come back to that

  190. in a few weeks' time,

  191. I am the light of the world.

  192. And what will turn that

  193. from being a 2D black and white claim

  194. into a 3D color one

  195. is if we grasp the fact

  196. that Jesus doesn't make that claim

  197. at a random time

  198. and in an unspecified location, right?

  199. In other words,

  200. put it in modern terms,

  201. it's not like,

  202. if I can say reverently,

  203. that Jesus is sitting

  204. in his living room on Facebook,

  205. staring at that screen

  206. that says,

  207. what's on your mind today?

  208. And thinking to himself,

  209. do you know what?

  210. I am the light of the world,

  211. post-send.

  212. When and where Jesus

  213. makes this statement

  214. is hugely significant

  215. and it explains

  216. why it was so explosive.

  217. But before we get there,

  218. you might be asking,

  219. well, that's very good,

  220. but what happened

  221. to the first 11 verses

  222. of chapter 8, right?

  223. Some of you might have clocked that.

  224. What's happening

  225. to the first 11 verses

  226. of chapter 8?

  227. We kind of jumped over that here.

  228. Now, it's worth saying

  229. that your Bible might have

  230. that section in italics

  231. or with an asterisk

  232. at the bottom.

  233. Now, while there is

  234. no reason to doubt

  235. that that event

  236. between Jesus

  237. and the woman

  238. caught in adultery

  239. happened,

  240. and evidence

  241. from the early church fathers

  242. would strongly suggest that,

  243. it seems likely

  244. that someone added

  245. that event in

  246. to some of the early

  247. Greek manuscripts.

  248. So because it's unlikely

  249. to have been

  250. in John's original,

  251. we're going to skip

  252. over it for now,

  253. but let me just suggest

  254. two reasons

  255. why that should be comforting

  256. and good news

  257. for us today.

  258. Here's the first one.

  259. It should give us confidence

  260. that the words we have

  261. in our Bibles

  262. are trustworthy.

  263. Okay?

  264. That this isn't fables,

  265. we're not dealing

  266. in myths here.

  267. What we're dealing in

  268. is carefully

  269. and accurately

  270. translated history.

  271. And the fact

  272. that a discrepancy

  273. like that

  274. can be flagged

  275. only goes to show

  276. just how many

  277. original and

  278. identical copies

  279. of John's Gospel

  280. that we have.

  281. So it's good news

  282. that the Bible

  283. doesn't shy away

  284. from that little

  285. asterisk in your Bible.

  286. It's good news for us.

  287. Actually, it's astonishing

  288. when you look at

  289. the amount of

  290. early manuscripts

  291. of the New Testament

  292. that we have.

  293. Let me just say,

  294. if you want to think

  295. a little bit more

  296. about that,

  297. can I highly recommend

  298. two things.

  299. One is a book

  300. by this lady

  301. called Amy R. Ewing.

  302. She's a wonderful

  303. apologist

  304. who's based down

  305. south in Oxford,

  306. I think.

  307. And she's written

  308. a wonderful book

  309. called Why Trust

  310. the Bible?

  311. One of the best

  312. things I've read

  313. on this topic.

  314. And the QR code

  315. if you want to scan it

  316. will take you

  317. to a little conversation,

  318. a little interview

  319. between her

  320. and Andy Bannister

  321. who works for

  322. the Solas Public

  323. Centre of Christianity

  324. up in Dundee.

  325. It's just half an hour

  326. you can listen to it

  327. on your commute to work.

  328. And they just

  329. back that around

  330. what it means

  331. for people in our world

  332. today

  333. that the Bible

  334. is trustworthy.

  335. She's fantastic

  336. on this kind of stuff,

  337. Amy or Ewing.

  338. That's the first reason.

  339. But the second reason

  340. why that's important

  341. to see

  342. is that it means

  343. that verse,

  344. and track with me here,

  345. verse 12 of chapter 8

  346. flows directly

  347. from verse 52

  348. of chapter 7.

  349. Okay, just have a look

  350. in the Bibles there.

  351. Verse 12 of chapter 8

  352. flows directly on

  353. from verse 52

  354. of chapter 7.

  355. So, when Jesus says

  356. I am the light

  357. of the world,

  358. he's still speaking

  359. during this thing

  360. that we thought about

  361. last week,

  362. this Feast of Tabernacles.

  363. Okay, one of the

  364. great Jewish festivals

  365. that took place

  366. every year

  367. in Jerusalem.

  368. And here's why

  369. that is significant.

  370. Every year

  371. as part of this festival,

  372. four enormous lights

  373. are lit up.

  374. And they're lit up

  375. to commemorate

  376. the 40 years

  377. that Israel had spent

  378. wandering in the wilderness.

  379. Now, you can read about that

  380. in the book of Exodus

  381. if you want to

  382. catch up with that.

  383. And so, when the people

  384. light these four

  385. huge lights,

  386. they were remembering

  387. the fact that God

  388. had led them

  389. in the wilderness

  390. to the land

  391. that he had promised them.

  392. He had led them

  393. by light.

  394. Okay, more specifically,

  395. he'd led them

  396. by a pillar of fire

  397. at night.

  398. And he'd led them

  399. by a lighted cloud

  400. during the day.

  401. So, these four lights

  402. are going

  403. and this is the picture,

  404. this is the scene,

  405. this is the history

  406. that's in the minds

  407. of God's people

  408. as they watch this

  409. and celebrate.

  410. So, these four lights

  411. are lit all night.

  412. Lighting up the sky.

  413. Okay, picture the scene.

  414. This is something like

  415. Edinburgh Castle

  416. at New Year.

  417. Right?

  418. You just,

  419. wherever you are

  420. in the cities,

  421. you cannot miss

  422. that light.

  423. Some historians

  424. describe the scene

  425. with these four

  426. huge lights

  427. blazing away

  428. that it was like

  429. a spectacular diamond

  430. that's glowing

  431. in the night sky.

  432. So, bright

  433. was this spectacle.

  434. This wasn't just

  435. a festival

  436. that looked back though.

  437. This was a festival

  438. that looked forward.

  439. Isaiah had spoken

  440. about how God

  441. would one day

  442. visit his people

  443. and he would act

  444. to save them

  445. and he would lead

  446. them by light.

  447. This suffering servant

  448. who would come

  449. to make good

  450. on God's promises

  451. to bring them

  452. to fulfillment,

  453. he would not just

  454. be a light

  455. to Israel.

  456. He would be a light

  457. to the nations.

  458. And his Messiah,

  459. the one through whom

  460. he would do that,

  461. he would be a light

  462. to the world.

  463. Now this is clicking,

  464. isn't it,

  465. for where we've been

  466. in John's Gospel

  467. thus far.

  468. And so it's in this moment,

  469. in the most public place

  470. in the temple,

  471. in the Old Testament

  472. charged and filled

  473. night air,

  474. that Jesus chooses

  475. to declare to all

  476. who would have ears

  477. to hear him,

  478. he says,

  479. I am

  480. the light of the world.

  481. You don't know

  482. where you're going

  483. in life?

  484. I am

  485. the light

  486. of the world.

  487. You don't know

  488. what tomorrow holds?

  489. I am the light

  490. of the world.

  491. You don't have

  492. the answers in life?

  493. I am the light

  494. of the world.

  495. You're nervous

  496. about the future?

  497. I am the light

  498. of the world.

  499. Follow me.

  500. Follow me.

  501. That's his invitation

  502. to all who would

  503. listen to him.

  504. I am

  505. the light of the world.

  506. And maybe just to help

  507. us feel the pointy

  508. contours

  509. of Jesus' claim,

  510. all I want to do

  511. is just help us

  512. as a community

  513. this morning,

  514. ask two questions

  515. of ourselves

  516. as we think

  517. about his claim.

  518. You up for this?

  519. Okay, I'll take that.

  520. Helen says yes.

  521. Here's the first one.

  522. Okay, ask ourselves,

  523. are we in denial

  524. about our darkness?

  525. You see,

  526. Jesus lovingly says,

  527. would you see

  528. that without me

  529. you are lost

  530. in darkness?

  531. And he says

  532. to the Pharisees

  533. and you will die

  534. in your sin.

  535. And presumably

  536. that is a reference

  537. to those who wandered

  538. in the wilderness

  539. and who perished

  540. for their lack of belief

  541. in where God

  542. was taking them.

  543. You are in

  544. the darkness.

  545. And if you think about it,

  546. it's kind of what makes

  547. light, light,

  548. isn't it?

  549. Okay, I've never met

  550. a fireworks company

  551. whose business model

  552. is to put on displays

  553. during the day.

  554. It wouldn't last

  555. very long, would they?

  556. You see, the Pharisees

  557. in this context,

  558. they know exactly

  559. what Jesus is saying.

  560. They are offended

  561. by what he's implying,

  562. not just because

  563. of what he's saying

  564. about him,

  565. but because of what

  566. he is implying

  567. about them.

  568. And I have to say

  569. this is one of the things

  570. that I love most

  571. about Jesus.

  572. And there's a lot of things.

  573. But this is one of the things

  574. I love most.

  575. Do you spend enough time

  576. with him

  577. and you'll soon

  578. come to see

  579. that so unlike

  580. our politicians

  581. who pick their words

  582. based on whether

  583. they're going to attract

  584. voters or not,

  585. that one of the most

  586. refreshing things

  587. about Jesus of Nazareth

  588. is that he's never

  589. interested in winning

  590. popularity contests.

  591. There's something

  592. deeply endearing

  593. about his heart here

  594. and that means

  595. that we can trust

  596. his words.

  597. It means that

  598. we should be deeply

  599. sobered by what

  600. picture he's painting

  601. here of the human

  602. condition.

  603. Maybe three quick

  604. pit stops here

  605. if we're up for

  606. taking notes.

  607. Here's the first one.

  608. His origin should

  609. humble us.

  610. You see, Jesus says

  611. verse 23

  612. to the Pharisees,

  613. you are of this world.

  614. You see,

  615. I am not of this world.

  616. He's contrasting

  617. the two origins.

  618. He is from above.

  619. They, on the other hand,

  620. are of the flesh.

  621. You think in worldly terms

  622. and judge things

  623. by worldly standards.

  624. Jesus says,

  625. when you hear me speaking,

  626. you're hearing the very voice

  627. of your creator.

  628. And that should deeply

  629. humble us, I think,

  630. when we recognize

  631. his origin.

  632. And maybe secondly,

  633. his cross should convince

  634. us.

  635. Verse 28.

  636. Jesus says to the Pharisees,

  637. when you've lifted up

  638. the Son of Man

  639. to see it,

  640. and by lifting up there

  641. he's talking about

  642. his death,

  643. there's going to be

  644. something verifying

  645. about that event.

  646. For it proves

  647. that what he's saying

  648. is true

  649. about the darkness

  650. of our hearts

  651. and of our world

  652. that he's come

  653. to save us from.

  654. And he's saying

  655. that the cross

  656. is a place

  657. where we see

  658. that our sin

  659. is a much bigger

  660. problem in our lives

  661. than we think it is.

  662. It's a much bigger

  663. problem than we think

  664. it is.

  665. So often what happens

  666. when you put your car

  667. in for an MOT,

  668. isn't it?

  669. You get that dreaded

  670. phone call from the garage.

  671. It's never a good sign

  672. when often happens

  673. with me

  674. that the voice

  675. on the other end

  676. starts with the word

  677. right.

  678. Which is code for,

  679. isn't it?

  680. There's a lot more

  681. wrong under the bonnet

  682. than I think you

  683. thought there was.

  684. And life teaches you

  685. that, doesn't it,

  686. as you go on in life?

  687. Actually,

  688. you realize

  689. sin in my heart

  690. is a much bigger deal.

  691. There's tentacles

  692. in much

  693. further places

  694. than I ever thought

  695. was true.

  696. And here's what I love.

  697. I told you about that

  698. section in the bit

  699. before,

  700. about how we're

  701. skipping over it.

  702. Well, let me just

  703. skip into it

  704. just for a few seconds.

  705. Let me just show you

  706. something I had never

  707. seen before

  708. until this week.

  709. Come with me,

  710. okay?

  711. Verse

  712. nine.

  713. So when the Pharisees

  714. throw this adulterous

  715. woman into the middle

  716. of the circle

  717. and they say,

  718. Jesus,

  719. what are you going

  720. to do?

  721. Right?

  722. She deserves to die.

  723. She's got it wrong.

  724. She's messed it up.

  725. Jesus replies,

  726. verse seven.

  727. Do you see this reply?

  728. Let he who is without

  729. sin cast the first stone.

  730. I thought it was

  731. brilliant.

  732. Again,

  733. it's so,

  734. the thing that so often

  735. convinces me

  736. that he is from

  737. above,

  738. that his wisdom

  739. is unparalleled.

  740. Again,

  741. as we see politicians

  742. floundering when doing

  743. TV and radio interviews,

  744. tongue-tied,

  745. the PR teams in the

  746. background doing all

  747. sorts of charades

  748. trying to get them

  749. to stop talking.

  750. When Jesus is up

  751. against questions

  752. that put him in

  753. between a rock

  754. and a hard place,

  755. his answers are

  756. stunningly good.

  757. He is superbly

  758. unpredictable.

  759. And isn't it

  760. interesting,

  761. here's where we kick

  762. in with verse nine,

  763. isn't it interesting

  764. that as one by one

  765. they begin to drift

  766. away having felt

  767. the challenge of

  768. Jesus' call,

  769. who is it that

  770. leads the way?

  771. Look at it.

  772. Who is it that

  773. leads the way?

  774. Verse nine there.

  775. It's the older ones.

  776. Here is the strange

  777. thing about the

  778. Christian life,

  779. that as we grow

  780. and follow Jesus

  781. more, we become

  782. not less aware

  783. of our sin.

  784. We become more

  785. of the sin,

  786. more aware of the

  787. sin of the depth

  788. of it that resides

  789. in our human

  790. hearts.

  791. Is that not true?

  792. You're not more

  793. aware of the things,

  794. the ways that you

  795. get stuff wrong,

  796. as you think about

  797. who Jesus is,

  798. and yet at the

  799. same time running

  800. like a speed train

  801. on a parallel track

  802. to the sin train,

  803. is your awareness

  804. of the depths

  805. of the mercy

  806. and the love

  807. of Jesus Christ.

  808. Some of us will

  809. have grown up

  810. with the words

  811. of that old hymn,

  812. O the deep,

  813. deep love

  814. of Jesus,

  815. vast,

  816. unmeasured,

  817. boundless,

  818. free,

  819. rolling as

  820. a mighty ocean

  821. in its fullness

  822. over me.

  823. The gospel says

  824. that the Christian

  825. life is one

  826. where you realize

  827. you need Jesus

  828. more as you

  829. grow,

  830. not less.

  831. The gospel is not

  832. the stabilizers

  833. on the bike

  834. of the Christian

  835. life, right?

  836. We had that

  837. wonderful experience

  838. three weeks ago

  839. where a little girl,

  840. Grace,

  841. she cracked cycling,

  842. she cracked it.

  843. No need for stabilizers

  844. anymore.

  845. The world is yours.

  846. But it doesn't

  847. work like that

  848. in the Christian life,

  849. thinking that stabilizers

  850. are something

  851. we will eventually

  852. go out of.

  853. No friends,

  854. the grace of Jesus,

  855. we never graduate

  856. from it.

  857. We never graduate

  858. from it.

  859. And I always remember

  860. going to a men's

  861. Bible study

  862. when I used to

  863. live down in Bristol.

  864. And there was a man

  865. called Marcus there.

  866. Marcus holding down

  867. a full-time job.

  868. Marcus,

  869. three kids

  870. at home.

  871. Marcus trying to

  872. do his best.

  873. And there I was

  874. as an impressionable

  875. 25-year-old

  876. who thought he had

  877. the world sussed.

  878. And the conversation

  879. comes around to

  880. what is some of

  881. the insights

  882. that you're learning

  883. about parenting

  884. right now.

  885. And I'm fully

  886. expecting Marcus

  887. to say something

  888. like,

  889. here's the three

  890. top books.

  891. Here's the routine

  892. that we have

  893. on the fridge

  894. at home.

  895. And do you know

  896. what he said?

  897. He just said,

  898. I've come to see

  899. what was a

  900. throwaway line.

  901. All I want

  902. for my kids,

  903. the best thing

  904. I can give them

  905. is not a college

  906. education.

  907. The best thing

  908. that I can do

  909. for them

  910. is show them

  911. that I need

  912. Jesus

  913. just as much

  914. as they do.

  915. And it's so true.

  916. And I know

  917. some of you here,

  918. you're in that place

  919. and you're struggling

  920. with the fact

  921. that you cannot

  922. serve here

  923. as much as you

  924. can because

  925. home life is

  926. full on.

  927. And I just want

  928. you to know,

  929. do not underestimate

  930. the example that we

  931. can set for our

  932. children.

  933. That's what we want

  934. them to see,

  935. isn't it?

  936. Do not underestimate

  937. your volunteering

  938. time for Kids

  939. Church upstairs

  940. because we need

  941. to model to them,

  942. we need to example

  943. to them the fact

  944. that we need Jesus.

  945. We've never graduated

  946. from him.

  947. We've never diminished

  948. in our desire

  949. to seek him.

  950. It's the best thing

  951. that we can give

  952. our children.

  953. Is it not true

  954. in the Christian life

  955. that we are meant

  956. to be spiritual

  957. Benjamin Buttons?

  958. Now think about that

  959. for a second.

  960. Spiritual Benjamin Buttons.

  961. I've not seen that film,

  962. this will mean nothing

  963. to you,

  964. but go with me.

  965. That the older we get,

  966. the more like

  967. dependent little children

  968. we should look.

  969. We are more sinful

  970. than we dared imagine,

  971. but equally,

  972. the cross

  973. is where we see

  974. that we are more

  975. loved

  976. than we ever

  977. dared

  978. to think

  979. was possible.

  980. And in John 3,

  981. in the context,

  982. looking on Jesus,

  983. being lifted up.

  984. Oh yes,

  985. loved it,

  986. amen.

  987. Being lifted up

  988. is the place

  989. where we look

  990. and we will find

  991. life.

  992. His cross

  993. should convince us,

  994. dear friends,

  995. about the darkness

  996. in our hearts

  997. and his motives

  998. should expose us.

  999. Do you see what he says,

  1000. verse 29?

  1001. They are those

  1002. who do things

  1003. that are pleasing

  1004. to them,

  1005. the Pharisees here.

  1006. But Jesus says,

  1007. in contrast,

  1008. I always do

  1009. the things

  1010. that are pleasing

  1011. to the Father.

1012. And so as we gaze

  1013. upon the light

  1014. of the world,

  1015. we need to ask

  1016. ourselves,

  1017. honestly,

  1018. with the Spirit's help,

  1019. are we in denial

  1020. about the darkness?

  1021. forgiveness.

  1022. And secondly,

  1023. and this will be

  1024. a lot more quick,

  1025. flip it round.

  1026. Are we,

  1027. and as a community

  1028. today,

  1029. are we in pursuit

  1030. of his light?

  1031. And I take it

  1032. that as God's Word

1033. has come at us today

  1034. and as the Spirit

  1035. has taken it

  1036. and done his

  1037. shining and exposing

  1038. work in our hearts,

  1039. that we are going

  1040. to be challenged.

1041. And if you are here

  1042. today and you do

  1043. not know this Jesus,

  1044. that he is just

1045. a voice in the world,

  1046. his invitation

  1047. is for you

1048. to come to him today

1049. and see that he is

1050. the light of the world.

1051. Just some of us here

  1052. need to come

  1053. to the light.

  1054. We'll think about this

  1055. next week,

1056. that that is the place

  1057. for true freedom

  1058. is to be found.

1059. The call is to turn

  1060. from the darkness

  1061. that you're in.

  1062. It's what the word

  1063. repentance means.

1064. It's right at the heart

  1065. of that word.

  1066. It means to turn.

  1067. Turn from the darkness.

  1068. Turn to the light.

  1069. Turn from your sin.

  1070. Acknowledge Jesus'

  1071. righteousness.

  1072. Turn from the darkness

  1073. you're in

  1074. and run to his

  1075. gracious light.

  1076. And I guess

  1077. for others here today,

  1078. the question is,

  1079. are we walking

  1080. in the light?

  1081. As we bring ourselves

  1082. to his words.

  1083. I love it.

  1084. The psalmist talks about

  1085. Psalm 119,

  1086. God's word being

1087. a light to our path.

  1088. Talking about his word

  1089. being a lamp

  1090. to our feet.

  1091. And the way

  1092. that we pursue Jesus

  1093. is to submit ourselves

  1094. to his lordship

  1095. as we

  1096. allow him

  1097. to lead us

  1098. through his words.

  1099. Now some of us

  1100. I know here today

  1101. as we think about

  1102. the application of this

  1103. are making some

  1104. really big decisions

  1105. about our futures.

  1106. Right?

  1107. Students,

1108. you're coming to the end

  1109. of your degrees.

  1110. Others of us

1111. are coming to the end

  1112. of our working life

  1113. thinking about retirement.

1114. All sorts of other things,

  1115. big decisions

  1116. that we're making

  1117. in our lives.

  1118. Let me ask us,

  1119. are we making

  1120. these decisions,

  1121. bringing them

  1122. to the light

  1123. of the world?

  1124. There's a wonderful

  1125. lady in America

  1126. called Jen Wilkin

  1127. and I should have

  1128. put her quote up

  1129. but I forgot

  1130. to put it up.

  1131. Just finished

  1132. a wonderful book

  1133. of hers recently

1134. and here's what she says

  1135. about decision making.

  1136. She says,

  1137. what if the primary

  1138. question we asked

  1139. ourselves

  1140. wasn't what should

  1141. I do?

  1142. But above that

  1143. was the question

  1144. as we gazed

  1145. at God's word

  1146. and gazed

  1147. at the Lord Jesus,

  1148. who should I be?

  1149. Who should I be?

  1150. And to be honest,

  1151. there's tons of decisions

  1152. that we make

  1153. in our lives.

  1154. There's tons

  1155. of different options

  1156. but in that decision

  1157. making process,

  1158. who should we be?

  1159. People of grace,

  1160. people of patience,

  1161. people of love,

1162. the fruit of the spirit

1163. pouring out of our lives,

  1164. decisions in life.

  1165. How often is it

  1166. the default

  1167. that we run

  1168. to our own ability

  1169. to navigate

  1170. our way through life?

  1171. Actually,

  1172. the call here

  1173. is to show yourself

  1174. just dependent

  1175. on your heavenly father.

1176. That he is the light

  1177. of the world.

  1178. He is where

  1179. the place

  1180. I need to follow.

  1181. And friends,

  1182. our words and actions

  1183. as well,

1184. the way that we treat

  1185. and we speak

  1186. of one another,

  1187. are they driven

  1188. by the light

  1189. of the world?

  1190. You know,

1191. when was the last time

  1192. that because we looked

  1193. at the light,

1194. we saw that we got

  1195. something deeply wrong?

  1196. I always love

  1197. that the word

  1198. is described,

  1199. God's word is described

  1200. as something

  1201. that pierces the soul,

  1202. it's a sharp

  1203. double-edged sword.

  1204. When was the question,

1205. when was the last time

  1206. that word pierced

  1207. our intentions

  1208. and our motives?

1209. You see how this works?

  1210. Are we deliberate

  1211. in our pursuit

  1212. of the light?

  1213. In the words

  1214. of Matthew Roberts,

  1215. who's a pastor

  1216. down in York,

  1217. in his wonderful

  1218. little book

  1219. called Pride

  1220. and Idolatry,

  1221. he says,

  1222. abandoning sin

  1223. is not part

  1224. of the cost

  1225. but of the blessing

  1226. of discipleship.

  1227. It's almost

  1228. Jesus rips us out

  1229. of the darkness

  1230. that we are in

  1231. and puts us

  1232. on the right track

  1233. and says,

  1234. follow me.

  1235. It's the reason

  1236. that you and I

  1237. were made,

  1238. to worship

  1239. and to glorify

  1240. and to know

  1241. our maker.

  1242. Jesus saves us

  1243. out of it

  1244. and puts us

  1245. on track.

  1246. Do you see

  1247. what he's saying?

  1248. Abandoning sin

  1249. is not part

  1250. of the cost

  1251. but of the blessing

  1252. of discipleship.

1253. And so as we close

  1254. and maybe just

  1255. with the aim

  1256. of trying to bring

  1257. us back

  1258. to that central

  1259. admission,

  1260. let me tell you

  1261. about one of my

  1262. favorite all-time

  1263. comeback lines.

  1264. Ready for this?

  1265. My friend Carl

  1266. had this comeback line

  1267. and I loved it

  1268. and he used it

  1269. all the time.

  1270. We've got this

  1271. saying in our

  1272. culture that

  1273. so-and-so is a

  1274. self-made man.

  1275. You heard that

  1276. before?

  1277. So-and-so is a

  1278. self-made woman.

  1279. Normally appearing

  1280. in Dragon's Den

  1281. or something like

  1282. that.

  1283. People who we

  1284. look at and we

  1285. think that they've

  1286. done it all

  1287. themselves.

  1288. So my friend

  1289. Carl, when he

  1290. used to hear

  1291. somebody use this

  1292. line of themselves

  1293. and someone else,

  1294. he used to reply

  1295. and he used to

  1296. say,

  1297. huh,

  1298. that's interesting.

  1299. Tell me,

  1300. what part of

  1301. yourself did you

  1302. make?

  1303. Think about it.

  1304. What part of

  1305. yourself did you

  1306. make?

  1307. I love it.

  1308. Probably not a

  1309. conversation starter,

  1310. probably a conversation

  1311. ender, okay,

  1312. but it makes the

  1313. point,

  1314. is it not true

  1315. that 90% of the

  1316. stuff that happens

  1317. in our life,

  1318. to be honest,

  1319. was well beyond

  1320. our control?

  1321. What part of

  1322. yourself did you

  1323. make?

  1324. We love our

  1325. rags to riches

  1326. story in our

  1327. world, someone

  1328. who's lived the

  1329. American dream,

  1330. and yet Jesus,

  1331. the invitation he

  1332. makes here to us

  1333. today is to

  1334. embrace the

  1335. admission that we

  1336. don't know where

  1337. we're going.

  1338. Jesus says,

  1339. without me,

  1340. you are in the

  1341. darkness.

  1342. And his

  1343. gracious call,

  1344. the center of

  1345. it this morning

  1346. is a call to

  1347. renounce all

  1348. self-reliance

  1349. and follow him,

  1350. the one who

  1351. said that he

  1352. is the light

  1353. of the world.

  1354. Let's pray,

  1355. will we?

  1356. Lord Jesus,

  1357. we thank you so

  1358. much today that

  1359. you are the

  1360. one who came

  1361. to, as we

  1362. sang in that

  1363. song, lead us

  1364. out of darkness,

  1365. lead us out of

  1366. death.

  1367. Lord, I'll be

  1368. honest, I don't

  1369. have a clue where

  1370. this is landing in

  1371. people's lives

  1372. today, but I

  1373. thank you that

  1374. your spirit is at

  1375. work in our

  1376. hearts and in

  1377. our lives.

  1378. Lord, we long

  1379. that we would be

  1380. a community who

  1381. denounces all

  1382. self-reliance,

  1383. stakes it all in

  1384. pursuing you, the

  1385. light of the

  1386. world.

  1387. Father, help us

  1388. even in our

  1389. prayer life as a

  1390. church to

  1391. declare in

  1392. words, express

  1393. on our tongues

  1394. our utter reliance

  1395. on who you are.

  1396. And Lord, as your

  1397. spirit takes your

  1398. word, as he

  1399. pierces our

  1400. pride, as he

  1401. binds our

  1402. wounds,

  1403. love us.

  1404. Lord, thank you

  1405. that you're the

  1406. one who knows

  1407. exactly where

  1408. we're at.

  1409. Help us to

  1410. own that

  1411. confession.

  1412. Help us to

  1413. embrace that

  1414. admission that

  1415. where else will

  1416. we go?

  1417. For you have the

  1418. words of eternal

  1419. life.

  1420. Father, thank you

  1421. for your love for

  1422. us and we just

  1423. commit ourselves

  1424. and the rest of

  1425. our time together

  1426. today to you in

  1427. Jesus' wonderful name

  1428. we pray.

  1429. Amen.
