  1. Well, folks, come back to me with those two of those verses in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  2. You know, one of the many reasons that people the world over have found such wonderful comfort in Jesus

  3. is that if you spend any amount of time with him,

  4. you'll soon run into somebody who speaks into the very biggest issues which we face in our lives.

  5. Right. And today we're going to think about the biggest one that faces all of us.

  6. Now, if you turned on BBC One about eight o'clock last Sunday night,

  7. you'll have tuned into the biggest party in the country.

  8. Now, I think we'll all agree that the King's Coronation Party as an event was absolutely superb.

  9. So the great and the good of British society were there.

  10. Shimmying away in the royal box.

  11. Take that and Lionel were reminding us all once again that they really are the gift that keeps on giving.

  12. And if you watch that evening, halfway through,

  13. what you will have seen is Prince William give his short speech.

  14. And if you listened carefully enough to that speech,

  15. you'll have heard him use a line, a line to describe the late Queen.

  16. And this line really got me thinking.

  17. He said this.

  18. He said really simply,

  19. I know she's up there fondly keeping an eye on us.

  20. And the crowd cheered and the royal box nodded away.

  21. And I have to admit that something deep inside of me,

  22. as I responded emotionally in the moment, wanted to do exactly the same.

  23. And yet I heard him say it.

  24. And I thought to myself, when the dust settled on the emotion,

  25. I thought to myself, how do you know?

  26. How do you know that she's up there?

  27. Now, notwithstanding what would appear to be the genuineness of the Queen's faith in Jesus,

  28. what William declared to be true in that moment is so revealing of how so often we as human beings

  29. try and square the circle of the inevitability of death.

  30. Now, two things as I see it and as I live my life in the world and as I speak to different people,

  31. there are two things that we are often inclined to do when we think about death.

  32. Here's the first one.

  33. The first one is simply to deny it.

  34. And we use lines, don't we?

  35. Like they've just moved upstairs.

  36. It was their time to go.

  37. They're now dancing with the angels.

  38. You know, someone said to me recently, and see if you think this is true or not,

  39. that in a generation past, everyone talked about and was aware of death

  40. and sex and sexuality was taboo.

  41. Now, generations on, we've completely flipped it, haven't we?

  42. That everybody wants to talk about sex and sexuality.

  43. You're kind of strange if you don't, but death is taboo.

  44. Let's not talk about it.

  45. We try and deny it.

  46. Or secondly, and I think this is true to say it's a lot more common in my generation,

  47. the other response is to defy it.

  48. Because we recognize that life is short and you hear people say that you only live once

  49. and they shorten it down to YOLO.

  50. And so they say, make your life count.

  51. You've got to make your life count.

  52. Again, it's interesting.

  53. Somebody said to me from a previous generation that it was common for people to have

  54. one job for life.

  55. Many of us will know family members, friends who had one job for life.

  56. It was the same for me, for my dad, for his dad.

  57. One job for life.

  58. And yet now, according to recent statistics, did you know that the average person

  59. will have 12 jobs during their lifetime in this generation?

  60. 5.7 careers.

  61. Now, listen, I'm not saying that there are bad reasons for making a job change.

  62. I did it.

  63. But so often, isn't it birthed from a desire to do something fulfilling and rewarding as

  64. we react to our three score in 10 existence?

  65. And we find ourselves in the West, certainly, living in what people have dubbed today as the

  66. new age of uncertainty.

  67. You'll have seen that there's billionaires in Silicon Valley at the minute investing their

  68. time and their precious money into life extension research under the banner of we think we can

  69. cheat death.

  70. Right?

  71. Guy from Amazon.

  72. Guy from Google.

  73. It's what they're investing in just now.

  74. Trying to cheat death.

  75. So do you see it?

  76. Is this ringing true, what we try and do as human beings?

  77. We either deny it or we defy it.

  78. And yet, is it not true that death, it still lurks like a shadow over us.

  79. It gets its pain into us.

  80. We feel it.

  81. And we know it's not right.

  82. So let me ask you this morning, how do you process it?

  83. You see, into our hopeless chasm where we don't know where to run, where we go looking

  84. for answers in all the wrong places, Jesus steps with real life-giving words of hope.

  85. And boy, do we need these this morning as a church family.

  86. You might need them in a way that I just don't know, particularly in your life right now.

  87. Many of us with friends and family who are just suffering just now, don't know what tomorrow

  88. holds.

  89. Our dear friends just now, don't know what tomorrow holds.

  90. But there's wonderful comfort for those for whom this is real and for some of us this morning

  91. for whom this is really raw in what Jesus says.

  92. Because of Jesus, friends, we are a community of hope.

  93. That is the defining feature, one of the defining features of our church family.

  94. And it's a wonderful evangelistic opportunity in a world that doesn't know where the answers are,

  95. that we can shine because Christ shines in us, the light of the world as we thought about

  96. at the beginning of chapter eight.

  97. And we are a beacon of hope.

  98. And this morning, I want you to know and celebrate and breathe in the truth that Jesus says,

  99. don't deny it, don't defy it, know and trust that I've come to deal with it.

  100. And here's what he says, verse 51, and this is the key verse.

  101. And if you go away from one thing this morning, may it be this verse, verse 51.

  102. He says this really simply, very truly, I tell you, and we'll come back to this,

  103. that whoever obeys my words will never see death.

  104. We thought about how humanity, we are lost in darkness.

  105. That was kind of the first part of chapter eight.

  106. Then we thought about last week, how we are slaves to our sin.

  107. This week, we are thinking about the inevitability of death.

  108. And there is the human condition right there.

  109. And into that gap steps Jesus who says, I am the light of the world.

  110. I am the one who's come to free you from sin.

  111. And I am the one who's come to lead you through death.

  112. And it's wonderful, the hope that the risen Jesus holds out to us today.

  113. And if we're to feel the full impact of this and embrace the refreshing hope that's on offer today in his words,

  114. we need to get our heads around this man called Abraham.

  115. You see, he's the central debating point in this discussion between Jesus and the Pharisees.

  116. Now, let me just say, just in case you're thinking of switching off at this point,

  117. if we get our heads around him, and this will just be five, ten minutes this morning thinking about him

  118. and the shape of his life, not only will that take us right to the center of the Christian faith,

  119. but it will take us to the beating heart of the great Christian hope.

  120. Because the Pharisees, if you want to understand, in the passage,

  121. they have got this man, Abraham, according to Jesus, they've got him all wrong.

  122. Come with me to the passage.

  123. You see, they think that they are right with God because of the fact that Abraham is in their family tree.

  124. So something of his DNA is in their physical bodies.

  125. And Jesus challenges them in this passage to think about the fact that they're asking themselves the wrong question.

  126. The question is not, are you descended from him physically?

  127. The question is, are you related to him spiritually?

  128. Now, we meet this man, Abraham, and his wife, Sarai, in the very first book of the Bible called Genesis.

  129. And they come on the end of chapter 11, beginning of chapter 12.

  130. Now, they come on the scene, and we have to understand this,

  131. against the backdrop of Noah and the flood,

  132. and against the backdrop of the Tower of Babel.

  133. Both episodes scream to us that rebellion against God has taken over humanity's hearts.

  134. And human beings in that backdrop have no right, no expectation to get anything from God other than judgment.

  135. And into this backdrop steps the Lord of grace.

  136. And God makes Abraham a promise,

  137. a promise that through him,

  138. all the nations,

  139. all the peoples of the world,

  140. will be blessed.

  141. Now, if you just want to think about this now,

  142. look around the room.

  143. I wonder if we did a show of hands this morning.

  144. Of all the different countries that we were born in,

  145. where would that put us?

  146. And you begin to see just how this is a microcosm of what God has promised here for the world.

  147. And that's a big promise, isn't it?

  148. As he thinks about the world,

  149. I mean, none of this kind of starts small and build it up.

  150. God just goes straight in there and says,

  151. from you I'm going to make a great nation.

  152. I'm going to bless the peoples of the world.

  153. Do you want to do that?

  154. What I want you to do, Abraham,

  155. is I want you to go.

  156. I want you to go.

  157. I want you to come and I want you to follow me to the land where I am taking you.

  158. And that is the greatest defining feature about the land.

  159. What is it?

  160. It's about the fact that God is there.

  161. So God is saying,

  162. come and find me.

  163. Come on a journey to where I am taking you.

  164. We need to understand that that is the goal of the Christian life.

  165. It is not stuff.

  166. It is not self-improvement.

  167. The goal of the Christian life,

  168. and we'll come back to this,

  169. is to be with our God and to know him.

  170. And God says to Abraham,

  171. I am your great reward.

  172. And the thing is that Abraham is 75 at this point.

  173. Now he's no spring chicken.

  174. Right?

  175. And so God is asking him to leave the security of his life,

  176. everything that he knows,

  177. his family,

  178. his home,

  179. and leave it all behind and stake it all on this promise.

  180. And he chooses to go.

  181. And you fast forward a couple of chapters to Genesis 15.

  182. God reiterates that promise.

  183. And he says,

  184. go out,

  185. go out,

  186. Abraham,

  187. and look at the stars.

  188. Now he's not a city center.

  189. We need to understand.

  190. He's way in the middle of the Middle East and desert.

  191. Right?

  192. Counting the stars.

  193. Right?

  194. Have you ever had that experience of being out in the middle of nowhere?

  195. No light pollution.

  196. Get a cracking view of the stars.

  197. God says,

  198. count them.

  199. I love to think that Abraham took that challenge up.

  200. One,

  201. two,

  202. three,

  203. four,

  204. five,

  205. six,

  206. seven,

  207. eight.

  208. And then he eventually got the point of what God was saying.

  209. You've got no idea,

  210. Abraham,

  211. what I'm going to do.

  212. It's just so much bigger than you can get your head around.

  213. But I want you to stake it all in the fact that you can trust who I am.

  214. God's promising Abraham a people.

  215. He's promising him a place.

  216. And he's promising that through him,

  217. blessing and favor will come to the world.

  218. And the key line is at verse six of Genesis 12,

  219. that Abraham believed God.

  220. He trusted God.

  221. And it was counted to him as righteousness.

  222. So he is right with God.

  223. Because he believed and he acted on what God has said.

  224. And let's be honest,

  225. he had every reason not to.

  226. God is saying that from him,

  227. I mean,

  228. it's all well saying it,

  229. that he's going to bless the world from him.

  230. It's going to come a great nation.

  231. But the reality of it is that he doesn't even have a son at this point.

  232. And Sarah's getting old.

  233. She's not getting pregnant anytime soon.

  234. So what did Abraham have to go on?

  235. He had nothing other to go on than God's unchanging character.

  236. Wonderful truth about our God is that he doesn't change.

  237. It's not like our tastes.

  238. Have you ever had that experience when you dig up an old photo album or on your iPhone,

  239. it comes up,

  240. this is what you were doing 15 years ago.

  241. And you think to yourself,

  242. what was I wearing?

  243. Why did I think double denim was cool?

  244. Our tastes change.

  245. We change.

  246. But this God stays the same.

  247. He's the same yesterday,

  248. today,

  249. and forever.

  250. This God is faithful.

  251. That's why C.S. Lewis,

  252. and I love it in his famous line,

  253. he famously said,

  254. that anything that is not eternal is eternally out of date.

  255. And this God never changes.

  256. He is faithful.

  257. And that means if God pledges himself to something,

  258. if he commits himself to something,

  259. or to use the biblical term,

  260. if he covenants himself to something,

  261. then it's a done deal.

  262. It's a done deal.

  263. And so Abraham was fully convinced that God was able to do what he said he'd do.

  264. Abraham,

  265. and I think this is where this is beginning to connect with us this morning,

  266. he sees his little life in the context

  267. and in light of the bigger story of God's plans and purposes in and for the world.

  268. So often what I know the mistake that I make,

  269. so often I just get focused on my little story.

  270. And Abraham has been a wake-up call for me this week

  271. to think about my place because of God's grace in his bigger story.

  272. Right?

  273. You've had that experience when you walk in halfway through a film

  274. and you say to yourself,

  275. I haven't watched it for two minutes,

  276. I don't get this,

  277. it doesn't make any sense.

  278. Right?

  279. Alex will tell you that is my worst trait.

  280. But of course you don't get it.

  281. You've only walked in and saw two minutes of the thing.

  282. You need to take in the whole thing.

  283. You've only seen a tiny slither of it.

  284. And I think it's exactly the same with our lives.

  285. Abraham's life becomes all about God's bigger story

  286. and faith and looking forward and trusting

  287. that somehow through his offspring,

  288. God would act to bring about those promises.

  289. And so that's why Jesus says, verse 56,

  290. Abraham, and this is a huge claim.

  291. Don't miss it.

  292. We just read it in our English versions.

  293. This was dynamite in the day when Jesus said it.

  294. Verse 56, Abraham rejoiced.

  295. Do you see it in the text?

  296. Abraham rejoiced to see my day.

  297. He saw it and was glad.

  298. Glad.

  299. In other words, Abraham was saved

  300. because he lived his life looking forward

  301. and anticipating and rejoicing in my arrival

  302. and what I'm going to accomplish

  303. and what I'm going to do through my death and resurrection.

  304. And so if you've ever wondered

  305. how people in the Old Testament times were saved,

  306. this passage is your answer.

  307. They were saved in exactly the same way that we are,

  308. except, sorry, exactly the same way as we are,

  309. trusting and rejoicing in Jesus' day,

  310. except they were looking forward

  311. and we are looking back.

  312. We are trusting in the work of Jesus on the cross

  313. and his resurrection for us to bring us to God.

  314. Wherever you are in history,

  315. that is the moment that you are looking to.

  316. And as the question for us,

  317. do we rejoice as we think about that day?

  318. We're going to think about another day in a minute,

  319. but do we rejoice when we think about,

  320. this is what we try and do in the opening,

  321. all of our service,

  322. but particularly the opening section,

  323. celebrate the gospel.

  324. We rejoice to see Jesus' day.

  325. And so here is the biblical definition of faith.

  326. It is trust based on evidence.

  327. It is walking in light of the promises of God.

  328. And it's with one eye in the future.

  329. That's what it is to be God's people of faith.

  330. Do we need to be reminded of that today?

  331. People of faith, a community of faith.

  332. Do you know what the most annoying question

  333. on the long car journey is?

  334. Normally it comes from the back seat.

  335. Are we there yet?

  336. Yeah, and you think to yourself as a parent,

  337. when you hear it,

  338. man, this is going to be a long one.

  339. Don't forget the border.

  340. We're not even at the bypass yet.

  341. Are we there yet?

  342. But I take it there's a sense

  343. as we journey together in this life of faith,

  344. that we're always to be mindful

  345. like that child in the car

  346. of that final destination.

  347. Now, whatever is going on

  348. in our lives today,

  349. whatever tomorrow holds,

  350. we need to understand

  351. that the most sure thing about our lives

  352. is that they will end with us

  353. in the presence of Jesus.

  354. That is the most important thing

  355. about your life today.

  356. If your faith is in him,

  357. that's where the journey is ending.

  358. You might not know what tomorrow holds.

  359. You might be really fearful about the future,

  360. that that is where the story ends.

  361. It's where it ends with him.

  362. He is our great reward,

  363. is Jesus.

  364. You know, my friend Tim is here this morning.

  365. Tim's over here.

  366. Tim works for Open Doors,

  367. working with persecuted Christians

  368. all over the world,

  369. thinking about how to support them

  370. and pray for them.

  371. Oh, you can speak to him after the service.

  372. He'll tell you stories,

  373. more about his work.

  374. But I've often wondered for our dear brothers and sisters

  375. in places like North Korea,

  376. in places living in the Middle East,

  377. all over the world,

  378. what is it that gets you through?

  379. What is it that holds you together

  380. when all of life seems uncertain,

  381. when so many of your physical possessions are gone,

  382. when you're fearful about the knock on the door?

  383. What is it that gets you through?

  384. It's the fact that the most sure thing about your life

  385. is that it's going to end with you

  386. in the presence of Jesus.

  387. I love the way Dutch Holocaust survivor

  388. Corrie ten Boom puts it.

  389. She says,

  390. never be afraid to trust an unknown future

  391. to a known God.

  392. The Bible presents Abraham

  393. as the father of faith.

  394. And so that is why Jesus says,

  395. verse 39,

  396. and I know it's slightly outsider verses this morning,

  397. but it's the run up to this section.

  398. The challenge to the Pharisees,

  399. the challenge to every generation who read that,

  400. is do what Abraham did.

  401. Do the works that Abraham did.

  402. And so in the time we have remaining,

  403. I just want us to see

  404. that Jesus offers us in these verses

  405. two rock solid things

  406. to walk the life of faith with.

  407. You want to think about this?

  408. This is like a cross country skier with two poles.

  409. And they come by way,

  410. if you look at the text of the two

  411. truly, truly statements that Jesus makes

  412. and truly, truly just means,

  413. and my friend Wayne always says this,

  414. it crubbers,

  415. get a load of this.

  416. Get a load of this.

  417. In other words,

  418. you need to get this.

  419. This is really important,

  420. says Jesus to this generation.

  421. So here's the first pole.

  422. And these will be really quick.

  423. Verse 51.

  424. The first pole

  425. is that as we journey in this life of faith,

  426. we can say to ourselves

  427. and to one another

  428. that my life is untouchable.

  429. And this is all to do with Jesus' ability.

  430. That he can say that

  431. whoever obeys my words

  432. will never see death.

  433. Now I've heard people make some big claims in life,

  434. but you have to say that

  435. that is the biggest claim

  436. that anyone has made.

  437. That you will never die.

  438. What?

  439. How can he say that?

  440. Well, he can say it

  441. because this gospel will end

  442. with him tasting death.

  443. Bearing the guilt and punishment for sin

  444. that his people deserved,

  445. he once and for all took it

  446. and he rose on the third

  447. and our lives are caught up

  448. with the risen king.

  449. The Pharisees don't understand that.

  450. They say,

  451. you claim that no one who trusts in you

  452. tastes death.

  453. Let me give you two examples

  454. of people who did.

  455. Abraham died.

  456. What's more, the prophets died.

  457. How can you claim that?

  458. And you have to say on one hand

  459. they're buying on the money.

  460. Humanly speaking, they did die.

  461. But in another sense,

  462. they live

  463. because their lives

  464. are caught up

  465. with Christ on high.

  466. They're with him.

  467. Waiting for him to bring

  468. in the new creation.

  469. This is where

  470. we are journeying.

  471. Those who have died,

  472. who were people of faith,

  473. they're with the Lord.

  474. With the Lord.

  475. You have to ask yourself

  476. if you're here

  477. and you don't believe

  478. in this Jesus.

  479. That is not where your life will end.

  480. Think about the future.

  481. But as I thought about this week,

  482. do you know what?

  483. I just thought to myself,

  484. do you know what?

  485. The fact that Christ

  486. is the end sorted,

  487. that is the most liberating thing

  488. I could ever know in my life.

  489. And it should free me

  490. to take risks

  491. and live the life of faith

  492. for the glory of Jesus

  493. in the present.

  494. Do you know,

  495. I remember having this

  496. distinct thought

  497. driving back from the hospital

  498. at Christmas time

  499. when my uncle died.

  500. Taking in the brevity of life,

  501. I'd never seen a dead body before

  502. and I walk in,

  503. bang,

  504. I'd just missed him

  505. by two minutes

  506. and there he is.

  507. Driving home,

  508. thinking to myself,

  509. do you know what?

  510. If Christ has my present,

  511. if Christ has my future,

  512. then why not take risks

  513. speaking for him?

  514. What does it matter

  515. if my neighbours think

  516. I'm loopy?

  517. They do already.

  518. What does it matter

  519. if my friends think

  520. I'm bonkers?

  521. Who cares?

  522. They should free us

  523. from the paralysing fear of man

  524. that so often grips

  525. my tongue.

  526. Knowing that my life

  527. in him

  528. is untouchable.

  529. And the second poll,

  530. really quickly,

  531. is that my God

  532. is incomparable,

  533. which is all to do

  534. with knowing Jesus' identity.

  535. The Pharisees say,

  536. verse 48,

  537. that you are a Samaritan,

  538. you have a demon,

  539. which is both an insult

  540. and smokescreen,

  541. smokescreen,

  542. from having to wrestle

  543. with the big questions

  544. that Jesus is asking them

  545. to think about.

  546. And let me just say,

  547. we live in a world

  548. that does exactly the same.

  549. That there's no end

  550. to the things in our world

  551. that it offers us

  552. to keep us from thinking

  553. about the biggest questions

  554. in life.

  555. You know,

  556. I was reading a stat

  557. the other day

  558. that apparently

  559. Netflix's biggest competitor

  560. is human sleep.

  561. Feeding us entertainment,

  562. keeping us awake,

  563. giving us things.

  564. Jesus says,

  565. have a think about

  566. who I am,

  567. who he is.

  568. Well, Jesus says,

  569. verse 58,

  570. before Abraham was,

  571. I am.

  572. And don't skip that.

  573. Jesus is unashamedly

  574. claiming the divine name

  575. of God,

  576. the one that God used

  577. when revealing himself

  578. to Moses,

  579. in Exodus chapter 3.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  580. And Jesus is saying,

  581. I am.

  582. I am the self-existent one.

  583. I am the eternal one.

  584. I am the unrivaled one.

  585. I am the timeless one.

  586. I am the everywhere present,

  587. all-knowing,

  588. all-seeing,

  589. unchanging one.

  590. And Jesus draws

  591. a straight line

  592. between God's declaration

  593. in Exodus 3

  594. and what he is saying

  595. about himself.

  596. And he is claiming

  597. nothing less

  598. than divinity.

  599. Let me just say,

  600. our Jehovah's Witnesses friends

  601. would consider Jesus,

  602. as I understand it,

  603. to be a created being.

  604. Our Mormon friends

  605. believe,

  606. as I understand it,

  607. that Jesus was

  608. the firstborn

  609. spirit child

  610. of the heavenly father

  611. and a heavenly mother,

  612. which is why

  613. a great question

  614. to ask

  615. when you're in conversation

  616. with somebody

  617. is,

  618. which Jesus

  619. are we talking about?

  620. And they will say

  621. to us,

  622. but Jesus never

  623. claimed to be God.

  624. And we want to

  625. lovingly

  626. and respectfully

  627. say

  628. from this passage

  629. that the original

  630. hearers

  631. would not have

  632. picked up stones

  633. by which to kill him

  634. for blasphemy

  635. under the Old Testament law

  636. if they didn't know

  637. in this moment

  638. exactly what he was

  639. claiming.

  640. Let me say,

  641. why does that matter?

  642. Let me just say,

  643. if he wasn't fully God,

  644. then he'd not be able

  645. to save us.

  646. He wouldn't be able

  647. to live a life

  648. unstained by sin,

  649. to live a life

  650. fully obedient

  651. to the father,

  652. no righteousness

  653. of his own

  654. to share with us.

  655. It really matters

  656. that Jesus

  657. is claiming

  658. divinity here.

  659. Now,

  660. just imagine

  661. if you think about it,

  662. if you were to come

  663. before a king,

  664. you were to come

  665. up to the gates

  666. and you look down

  667. and this is kind

  668. of your nightmare,

  669. isn't it,

  670. that your shirt

  671. is ripped,

  672. your mud stains

  673. all over your trousers,

  674. your ties all over

  675. the place,

  676. your hair's mud,

  677. what would you need?

  678. You would need

  679. two things.

  680. You would need

  681. to take your dirty

  682. clothes off,

  683. get rid of them

  684. and you would need

  685. somebody to come

  686. and give you

  687. perfectly white

  688. new ones.

  689. And when we think

  690. about what Jesus

  691. has done,

  692. we need to think

  693. about those two

  694. aspects of it.

  695. We are forgiven

  696. in him.

  697. As far as the east

  698. is from the west,

  699. that's how far

  700. he's removed

  701. our sin from us

  702. and in him

  703. we are clothed

  704. with his perfect

  705. righteousness

  706. and he has made

  707. us his.

  708. Do you know

  709. there will never

  710. be a moment

  711. that Jesus

  712. isn't on our side.

  713. Not for a nanosecond

  714. will he cease

  715. from lovingly

  716. praying for us

  717. in heaven

  718. as those who

  719. have been lovingly

  720. brought into

  721. the very family

  722. of God.

  723. Friends,

  724. my life is

  725. untouchable

  726. because of what

  727. he's done for me

  728. and my life

  729. is incompatible,

  730. my God is

  731. incomparable

  732. because of who

  733. he is for me.

  734. And this is what

  735. Jesus offers us

  736. this morning.

  737. Do you need to

  738. hear it?

  739. Do you need to

  740. hear it?

  741. Let me just close.

  742. I'll tell you about

  743. a guy I played

  744. football with

  745. in Aberdeen.

  746. His name was

  747. Dane.

  748. Dane was hard

  749. as nails.

  750. Loved playing

  751. with Dane

  752. because he did

  753. all the dirty

  754. work and I did

  755. all the running.

  756. But do you know

  757. what he did

  758. to fund himself

  759. through university?

  760. Being a fishing

  761. village boy,

  762. here's what he

  763. did.

  764. His little side

  765. hustle is that

  766. he was a

  767. lobster fisherman.

  768. Okay,

  769. get that,

  770. students.

  771. That's what he

  772. did to fund

  773. himself through

  774. university.

  775. And he invited

  776. me out one day

  777. with him on his

  778. boat.

  779. And I say

  780. invited,

  781. it makes it

  782. sound like a

  783. glamorous thing.

  784. It was brutal.

  785. And we went

  786. out on this

  787. boat,

  788. we sailed out

  789. to his

  790. pots,

  791. the waters

  792. are going,

  793. and I

  794. watch him

  795. draw them

  796. up.

  797. And I

  798. watch him

  799. take out

  800. the lobsters.

  801. And I

  802. watch as

  803. these things

  804. go swinging

  805. for him.

  806. Swinging

  807. for him.

  808. And what he

  809. does in that

  810. moment is that

  811. he takes an

  812. elastic band

  813. and he

  814. humanely

  815. and gently

  816. just places

  817. the elastic band

  818. over the

  819. pincer.

  820. And he does

  821. exactly the same

  822. with the other

  823. pincer.

  824. and he

  825. just

  826. neutralizes

  827. the threat.

  828. And in

  829. that moment

  830. I'm looking

  831. at these

  832. creatures

  833. and they

  834. are still

  835. terrifying

  836. to me.

  837. Still

  838. terrifying

  839. to me.

  840. They are

  841. enormous.

  842. Their

  843. beady eyes

  844. staring at

  845. me.

  846. Their

  847. thing's

  848. going.

  849. I pick

  850. them up.

  851. I feel

  852. the sharp

  853. edges.

  854. I feel

  855. the pain

  856. and on top

  857. of it all

  858. they smell

  859. awful.

  860. But the

  861. thing is

  862. because of

  863. what he

  864. had done

  865. they

  866. couldn't

  867. get me.

  868. They

  869. couldn't

  870. get me.

  871. And in

  872. exactly the

  873. same way

  874. brothers and

  875. sisters because

  876. of what

  877. Jesus has

  878. done

  879. because of

  880. what he

  881. has done

  882. the Bible

  883. would say

  884. that in

  885. him we

  886. can face

  887. up to

  888. death

  889. knowing

  890. that he

  891. has taken

  892. out the

  893. one thing

  894. that can

  895. never get

  896. us.

  897. In

  898. him we

  899. can face

  900. up to

  901. death

  902. and through

  903. the pain

  904. and even

  905. though the

  906. thought of

  907. it still

  908. looks and

  909. feels horrible

  910. nevertheless

  911. the Bible

  912. would say

  913. that we

  914. can say

  915. where oh

  916. death is

  917. your sting

  918. where oh

  919. grave is

  920. your victory

  921. for my

  922. life is

  923. caught up

  924. in the

  925. one who

  926. acted to

  927. defeat

  928. you

  929. and he

  930. loves me.

  931. Oh my

  932. life is

  933. untouchable

  934. and my

  935. God is

  936. incomparable

  937. Jesus says

  938. to all

  939. those who

  940. would listen

  941. don't deny

  942. it

  943. don't defy

  944. it

  945. know and

  946. trust that

  947. I've come

  948. to deal

  949. with it.

  950. Here is the

  951. promise

  952. verse 51

  953. Jesus says

  954. very truly

  955. I tell you

  956. whoever

  957. obeys my

  958. word

  959. will never

  960. see

  961. death.

  962. Let's pray

  963. will we?

  964. And so

  965. in the

  966. silence

  967. now

  968. Father

  969. I ask

  970. that by

  971. your

  972. precious

  973. Holy

  974. Spirit

  975. that you

  976. would be

  977. ministering

  978. to us

  979. this morning

  980. some of

  981. us in

  982. that place

  983. of being

  984. really

  985. scared

  986. about what

  987. tomorrow

  988. holds

  989. as we

  990. think about

  991. ourselves

  992. as we

  993. think about

  994. those who

  995. are nearest

  996. and dearest

  997. to us

  998. as we

  999. think about

  1000. friends and

  1001. family for

  1002. whom this

  1003. is really

  1004. raw

  1005. Lord be

  1006. at work

  1007. this morning

  1008. by your

  1009. spirit

  1010. bringing that

  1011. fresh assurance

  1012. of the fact

  1013. that our

  1014. lives are

  1015. caught up

  1016. in the

  1017. one who

  1018. lives

  1019. and so

  1020. Father we

  1021. thank you

  1022. that your

  1023. love has

  1024. been poured

  1025. into our

  1026. hearts

  1027. through the

  1028. Holy Spirit

  1029. that you

  1030. have given

  1031. us

  1032. Father thank

  1033. you

  1034. for this

  1035. wonderful

  1036. picture of

  1037. Jesus

  1038. that we've

  1039. seen in

  1040. John chapter

    John 8 chapter mention

  1041. 8

  1042. thank you

  1043. for the

  1044. Bible

  1045. in our

  1046. own

  1047. language

  1048. that we

  1049. can read

  1050. and understand

  1051. and know

  1052. that he

  1053. is the

  1054. light of

  1055. the world

  1056. that he

  1057. is the

  1058. one who

  1059. has come

  1060. to liberate

  1061. us from

  1062. our sin

  1063. and he

  1064. is the

  1065. one who

  1066. has come

  1067. to lead

  1068. us through

  1069. death

  1070. so Father

  1071. be at work

  1072. this morning

  1073. as we

  1074. finish our

  1075. time together

  1076. Lord be

  1077. at work

  1078. in our

  1079. conversations

  1080. Lord help

  1081. us to be

  1082. those who

  1083. pray and

  1084. stand and

  1085. journey with

  1086. one another

  1087. Father above

  1088. all keep

  1089. our eyes

  1090. fixed on

  1091. Christ

  1092. and it's

  1093. in his

  1094. name that

  1095. we pray

  1096. Amen
