  1. Oh folks, John chapter 10. My soul needed this this week in John chapter 10 and it needs it this morning.

John 10 chapter mention John 10 chapter mention

  2. And can I suggest that you need the truth of John chapter 10 this morning.

    John 10 chapter mention

  3. And just in terms of being reminded this week of one of the things we know to be true about God, that he is sovereign.

  4. He knows the end from the beginning. He knows what is happening in each of our lives.

  5. He knows what we would be facing this week as a church.

  6. And in his sovereignty, his total control, I could not have picked a better passage to be preaching today had I been given the whole Bible to pick from as the one that we're in.

  7. And so John chapter 10 is just the most profound of passages.

    John 10 chapter mention

  8. So please do have it open in front of you as we get into this today.

  9. But let me just to get us into it. Let me ask us at the start.

  10. If you were an animal, what would you be?

  11. Right? Have a think about it. It's one of those awkward icebreaker questions that we all love.

  12. And we're all so glad when people ask it, aren't we?

  13. If you were an animal, what would you be?

  14. And I have to be honest and say that everything inside me wants to answer that question and say tiger.

  15. Okay? King of the jungle.

  16. These guys are top of the food chain.

  17. They're brave. They're powerful. They're large. They're in charge.

  18. You fend for yourself.

  19. And I want everything that's true of a tiger to be true of me.

  20. And I hear Katy Perry sing in the background.

  21. I've got the eye of the tiger, a fighter dancing through the fire because I am a champion.

  22. And you're going to hear me roar.

  23. And I think to myself, I would love to be a tiger.

  24. I would love to have the things that are true of a tiger and have them true of my life as I lead it in the world.

  25. Except the thing is, I know none of that is true for me.

  26. Right? Powerful.

  27. How about he needs his eight hours sleep a night minimum or he's a walking zombie the next day?

  28. How about brave?

  29. Well, how about somebody who gets so easily distracted, his emotions are up and down,

  30. and so often I sit under a dark cloud of discouragement?

  31. Okay?

  32. I am no lion.

  33. And that's why I think I have found, by God's goodness, such strength in being reminded of the wonderful and liberating truth

  34. that comes if you and I embrace the animal that Jesus says we are in this passage.

  35. This animal is not top of the food chain.

  36. This animal has fleas.

  37. This animal doesn't know what it's doing, and yet this animal is where we will find freedom today in embracing that we are it.

  38. Because what this has done this week, in all honesty, is being in this place again and reminding myself of this truth.

  39. It's taken the eyes of my heart off of a weak me,

  40. and it's flung them onto a strong Christ.

  41. It's taken them off of how I'm feeling,

  42. which is always such a sugary peg on which to build the foundation of our lives,

  43. and instead it's fixed them on what I know to be true.

  44. Can I suggest if that's you here this morning,

  45. and you're coming in here and you're not feeling great,

  46. what you need this morning is not people telling you that you should be feeling better.

  47. What you need to be this morning is to be in a place where you're reminded of what is true.

  48. Because Jesus says quite simply, and this is one of the most simple yet profound statements

  49. I think any human being has ever made.

  50. Jesus says, I am the good shepherd.

  51. And it's unique among the I am statements, the other ones that we get in John's gospel.

  52. All the others reveal something about him,

  53. except this one also reveals something humbling and freeing about us.

  54. You know, years ago there was a Scottish minister and hymn writer called Horatius Bonnard.

  55. They don't do first names like that anymore, do they?

  56. Horatius Bonnard.

  57. He lived in Broughton on the other side of the city early 1800s.

  58. I've loved learning about Horatius Bonnard over the years.

  59. That's why many of you know the Bonnard Trust that we're involved with as a church,

  60. is where they take their name.

  61. I think it was Andrew Bonnard, Horatius Bonnard.

  62. Anyway, big brain, he penned these words to a hymn to describe what his soul found in Jesus.

  63. And this is one of my favourite hymns.

  64. And if you want to go home and go on YouTube, you'll find a wonderful version of it by a lady called Audrey Assad.

  65. Simply says this, here it is.

  66. I heard the voice of Jesus say, come unto me and rest.

  67. That's what Luke I read at the start.

  68. Lay down thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast.

  69. I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad.

  70. And I found in him a resting place.

  71. And he has made me glad.

  72. And that is the song of someone who's embraced what it is to be a sheep.

  73. I find myself coming back to that song again and again and again and again in the Christian life.

  74. And so what we're going to do over the next half hour or so,

  75. is we're just going to bleat our way through this passage of scripture.

  76. And here's the beat of the bleat.

  77. It just says, how good is our shepherd?

  78. Now if we're going to savour the sweetness of what Jesus says here even more,

  79. we need to understand that he's saying it at a particular time in this gospel.

  80. With Jesus, if you've learnt anything, it's that timing is everything with him.

  81. No opportunity is wasted.

  82. No moment is squandered.

  83. No, Jesus says it in John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  84. Here's the first thing that we need to understand.

  85. is that there's bad shepherds in the background of this.

  86. So come with me.

  87. Verse 1, Jesus says,

  88. Truly I say to you.

  89. And immediately we should be asking who is the you that he's speaking to.

  90. And if you glance back to verse 40 of chapter 9,

  91. you just go back a few verses,

  92. you will see that Jesus is still talking to the Pharisees.

  93. In the immediate context of John chapter 9,

    John 9 chapter mention

  94. Ian took us through that last week.

  95. Jesus has just given sight to this blind man.

  96. And he has become,

  97. verse 38,

  98. look at that little description there we get of him.

  99. What did he do?

  100. He worships the Lord.

  101. He worships Jesus.

  102. This man has become a worshipper of the living God.

  103. And is that not a wonderful description of what it is to be a Christian?

  104. Worshipping Jesus.

  105. Jesus has quite literally given this man his life back.

  106. And you think everybody should be rejoicing in this scene,

  107. but verse 34,

  108. the Pharisees cast him out of the synagogue.

  109. You're a liar.

  110. You're not speaking the truth.

  111. And so when Jesus speaks in this passage of thieves and robbers,

  112. when he speaks about hired hands,

  113. who don't give two hoots about the sheep,

  114. this is a jab at the Pharisees.

  115. Now these men would know that this isn't the first time that God's had some really chilling words to say

  116. about bad and selfish leaders of his people.

  117. Ezekiel chapter 34.

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  118. Ezekiel,

  119. one of the prophets that we get in the Old Testament,

  120. speaks to his generation.

  121. God,

  122. through Ezekiel,

  123. speaks to his generation of really,

  124. really bad and selfish leaders.

  125. And you get it in Ezekiel 34.

  126. You can read it in your own time,

  127. a little snapshot of it there.

  128. These leaders are not feeding the sheep.

  129. They're not caring for the sheep.

  130. They're not running to meet the needs of the sheep.

  131. They're not tracking down the sheep who have run way,

  132. way off course.

  133. And as a result of that,

  134. God's people are massively suffering at the neglect

  135. of this generation of God's leaders.

  136. And the root cause of it,

  137. I think,

  138. is that the relationship between God's leaders,

  139. if you like,

  140. the under shepherds,

  141. and God the great shepherd,

  142. that relationship that's meant to be driving everything that they do,

  143. is non-existing.

  144. Now it was Robert Murray McShane,

  145. who was another Scottish pastor from way back,

  146. he observed that what his people needed most from him

  147. was his own holiness.

  148. Now what he meant by that is if he's saying,

  149. if I'm not pursuing the Lord,

  150. if I'm not loving him and worshipping him,

  151. I've got nothing to pass on to my people.

  152. I'm in no fit place to lead them in worship of the Lord.

  153. He recognized that in order to serve and love God's people,

  154. you need to do so out of an overflow of a heart

  155. that's captivated by a wonderful Christ.

  156. Something that we're always asking ourselves as elders of this church.

  157. We did it a few weeks ago as we went away.

  158. Is this job,

  159. is this role still a joy to us?

  160. Because we love the Lord Jesus.

  161. We love him,

  162. and that love for him spills out in a love for his people.

  163. Because no one is more committed to his people than Jesus,

  164. as we'll see.

  165. We serve you,

  166. dear friends,

  167. and it is a joy to do that,

  168. because we love him.

  169. And we love him,

  170. and get this right,

  171. because he first loved us.

  172. And there's none of that going on in Ezekiel 34,

  173. and God says to those shepherds,

  174. I am against you.

  175. But in the very next breath,

  176. God promises,

  177. not only to deal with the bad shepherds,

  178. but also gloriously and graciously,

  179. God promises,

  180. not to post an advert on S1 jobs for a better shepherd.

  181. Not to try and recruit and go head hunting to get more shepherds.

  182. God says,

  183. he promises to be to his people.

  184. He will come and be the good shepherd that they need.

  185. John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  186. that's the context.

  187. There's bad shepherds in the background,

  188. but the good shepherd is in the foreground.

  189. And I just want us to hear,

  190. if we can do this today,

  191. right,

  192. as we hear his voice,

  193. I just want us to hear,

  194. as he speaks,

  195. three wonderful tones

  196. in the voice of our good shepherd today.

  197. If you're a note taker,

  198. these are three C's.

  199. And hear him speak to you today.

  200. He says,

  201. I want to be your shepherd.

  202. I want to be your shepherd.

  203. Here's the first.

  204. Hear in his voice,

  205. him express,

  206. his complete care of us.

  207. Jesus says,

  208. verse 3,

  209. and just take it what he's saying here.

  210. I call my own by name.

  211. Verse 14,

  212. he says,

  213. I know my own,

  214. and my own know me.

  215. So in terms of his relationship with his sheep,

  216. Jesus doesn't know of his sheep.

  217. He doesn't just know about his sheep.

  218. He knows his sheep.

  219. Now many of you will have that experience

  220. of running a race,

  221. right?

  222. It's marathon day today.

  223. I didn't even know that until yesterday.

  224. Marathon day today in our city.

  225. You know what it's like when you do these races

  226. and what do you get on your chest to put on?

  227. You get a number,

  228. don't you?

  229. And nothing makes you feel special

  230. and known like knowing

  231. that you are number 44978,

  232. does it?

  233. That's not far off being a telephone number,

  234. in truth, is it?

  235. 44978.

  236. We cannot get our heads around

  237. knowing that amount of people.

  238. But Jesus is not like us.

  239. He's not just like us on our best day.

  240. Right?

  241. The all-knowing one.

  242. When Jesus says he knows his sheep,

  243. we need to understand

  244. that we are not a number to him.

  245. You are a name to him.

  246. These are wonderfully intimate words

  247. that convey his wonderful

  248. and perfect knowledge

  249. of every detail of our lives.

  250. And that's the metaphors

  251. what a shepherd in this day would do.

  252. He would sleep beside the sheep.

  253. He would camp out

  254. and eat with the sheep.

  255. He'd even have nicknames for his sheep.

  256. Because in this day,

  257. his flock

  258. is his livelihood.

  259. Right?

  260. It is his bank account,

  261. if you want to put it like that.

  262. He loves his sheep.

  263. They are his sheep.

  264. And Jesus is saying

  265. in a greater way,

  266. he knows his sheep.

  267. Right?

  268. And you need to take this in today

  269. if you are his.

  270. He knows every single struggle

  271. that's going on in your heart today.

  272. And he knows every single weakness

  273. that you're carrying

  274. in your life today.

  275. And he knows every fear

  276. that's in your mind

  277. that's dominating you today.

  278. And he knows every need of your soul.

  279. And so when we call out to him,

  280. this is not like

  281. when you phone your insurance company

  282. and you get

  283. the customer services line

  284. that says,

  285. your call is important to us,

  286. your number 18 in the queue.

  287. And you think,

  288. how can I be important to you

  289. if I'm 18 in the queue?

  290. Friends, when we pray

  291. to our Father

  292. in the name of Jesus,

  293. we need to understand

  294. that he is right there

  295. at the right hand of God

  296. interceding for us

  297. by name, by need.

  298. And when we pray,

  299. we have the ear of God.

  300. Not begrudgingly,

  301. but delightfully.

  302. He loves us.

  303. He loves us.

  304. You know, Chloe did that the other day.

  305. She came down into our room

  306. at one o'clock in the morning.

  307. I want a drink of water.

  308. I can't get to sleep.

  309. Now, who does that?

  310. Only somebody who's got

  311. the confidence

  312. that they're going to a parent,

  313. not a teacher, right?

  314. That we have that kind of access

  315. before this God.

  316. We can pray to him

  317. knowing that he loves us

  318. because of the son.

  319. In the words of the late Tim Keller

  320. who died and went to be

  321. with Jesus last week,

  322. Tim Keller,

  323. profound influence

  324. on my life

  325. and many others in the world,

  326. he says this

  327. and take this in.

  328. To be loved

  329. but not fully known

  330. is superficial.

  331. To be known

  332. but not loved

  333. is our worst nightmare.

  334. Only Jesus

  335. knows us to the bottom

  336. and he loves us

  337. to the sky.

  338. Hear the complete care

  339. this morning

  340. of your shepherd's voice.

  341. And hear secondly,

  342. hear the total commitment

  343. to you in his voice.

  344. Verse 10,

  345. Jesus says,

  346. others have come

  347. to steal,

  348. kill and destroy.

  349. And you see,

  350. it's just a contrast

  351. that he's setting up here.

  352. He talks about

  353. the hired hand.

  354. The hired hand

  355. sees the wolf coming

  356. and he thinks to himself,

  357. I'm getting out of there.

  358. This is not my job.

  359. I did not sign up for this.

  360. I'm not taking on the wolf

  361. for this sheep.

  362. I'm not paid enough

  363. for this.

  364. Right?

  365. I remember doing that

  366. one of my first ever jobs

  367. as a student

  368. during the summers.

  369. One of those old school

  370. restaurants we used

  371. to have to go to.

  372. Some of you remember

  373. this kind of thing.

  374. You had to clock in

  375. and stamp.

  376. Yeah?

  377. Stamp, clock,

  378. that was you in.

  379. When you left,

  380. stamp, clock,

  381. that was you out.

  382. I'm doing my shift.

  383. And that's the hired hand.

  384. I'm only paid to do this.

  385. I don't care about the sheep.

  386. It's my job.

  387. But with Jesus,

  388. it's not a job.

  389. With Jesus,

  390. this is his calling.

  391. They say that,

  392. verse 12,

  393. because they don't own the sheep.

  394. They don't care

  395. what happens to the sheep.

  396. They just want to care themselves.

  397. Jesus, on the other hand,

  398. he could not be more in it

  399. for his sheep

  400. because he owns his sheep.

  401. Do you see that word?

  402. He owns them.

  403. And it's a wonderful thought today

  404. that if you're a Christian

  405. here this morning,

  406. that Jesus called you.

  407. Jesus bought you

  408. with his precious blood.

  409. Jesus took responsibility

  410. for you and I's sin.

  411. Jesus pulled out all the stops

  412. to make you and I his sheep.

  413. And the truth that we need

  414. to understand this morning

  415. is that this good shepherd,

  416. he has us.

  417. He has us.

  418. Our times are in his hands.

  419. No one is getting to us

  420. because our shepherd will defend us.

  421. Our shepherd has our times.

  422. Our shepherd has our lives.

  423. And as dark

  424. and as scary

  425. as the valley gets

  426. and as painful

  427. and as long as the path might be,

  428. even through death,

  429. this shepherd,

  430. not only is he with us

  431. in the darkest valley,

  432. this shepherd will lead us

  433. through to the other side.

  434. And no one will snatch us

  435. from his hand.

  436. We'll see that next week.

  437. No one will snatch us

  438. from his hand.

  439. And what I want us

  440. to know this morning

  441. as a church family

  442. is that no one

  443. is more committed

  444. to loving us

  445. than Jesus is.

  446. Jesus will never run away

  447. from us.

  448. Jesus knew exactly

  449. what he was taking on

  450. when he called us

  451. to himself.

  452. What makes him

  453. the good shepherd

  454. is verse 15.

  455. He says,

  456. I lay down my life

  457. for the sheep.

  458. He's talking there

  459. about the cross.

  460. In other words,

  461. if you were a roaming reporter

  462. going around the streets

  463. of Jerusalem

  464. on the day

  465. that Jesus was crucified

  466. and you held up

  467. a microphone

  468. to his mouth

  469. and said,

  470. Jesus,

  471. what are you doing

  472. up there?

  473. The answer

  474. which he could have given

  475. is I am laying down

  476. my life

  477. for my sheep.

  478. Friends,

  479. if you want to know

  480. his commitment

  481. to you,

  482. if you want to see

  483. his love for you

  484. demonstrated,

  485. that's where we look

  486. today.

  487. Hear in his voice

  488. his total

  489. commitment

  490. to you

  491. and thirdly,

  492. hear the absolute

  493. control

  494. in his voice.

  495. Jesus says,

  496. I lay down

  497. my life.

  498. That's verse 17.

  499. I lay,

  500. now just take that in,

  501. I lay down my life.

  502. In other words,

  503. he's no tragic hero.

  504. If you grew up in Scotland,

  505. you'll know Macbeth

  506. was standard reading.

  507. Shakespeare kind of

  508. created that term,

  509. didn't he?

  510. Tragic hero,

  511. classic,

  512. you take a good character,

  513. you show them

  514. making a bad choice,

  515. audience sympathizes,

  516. classic tragic hero.

  517. Jesus is no tragic hero.

  518. He lays down

  519. his life.

  520. He is in complete

  521. control of that.

  522. That is the very

  523. reason he came.

  524. He lays down

  525. his life.

  526. He's in charge.

  527. He lays it down

  528. and

  529. he takes it up

  530. again.

  531. He's talking about

  532. the resurrection.

  533. He lays down

  534. his life.

  535. He takes it up

  536. again.

  537. Jesus is in

  538. total control.

  539. And it reminded me

  540. this week of that song,

  541. Who's Afraid of the

  542. Big Bad Wolf?

  543. And as I think

  544. about the biggest

  545. wolf that's facing

  546. each of us

  547. in our lives,

  548. the wolf of death,

  549. we have to understand

  550. that Jesus

  551. has taken

  552. care of it.

  553. Because he laid

  554. down his life,

  555. because he took

  556. my sin,

  557. because he took

  558. my place,

  559. because the Father

  560. raised him in power,

  561. he took on

  562. death,

  563. which is the

  564. biggest wolf

  565. facing us,

  566. and he won.

  567. And in him,

  568. his victory

  569. is our

  570. victory.

  571. And what's

  572. driving all of

  573. this?

  574. What's driving

  575. all of this?

  576. You've got to see

  577. this.

  578. See the glorious

  579. answer at verse

  580. 15 and 17.

  581. What's the reason?

  582. 15 and 17.

  583. It's because of

  584. the loving

  585. relationship that

  586. exists between

  587. the Father and

  588. the Son.

  589. Jesus, the Son,

  590. obedient to death.

  591. The Father in

  592. heaven who sent

  593. the Son loves

  594. him for it.

  595. The Holy Spirit

  596. sent to apply

  597. that work to

  598. our lives.

  599. Salvation is the

  600. overflow of that

  601. loving relationship

  602. of our triune

  603. God that has

  604. existed for all

  605. eternity.

  606. And so when

  607. Jesus talks about

  608. life to the

  609. full, the life

  610. that he has come

  611. to give his

  612. sheep, life to

  613. the full, is

  614. life with our

  615. three-in-one

  616. God.

  617. And see the

  618. promise that

  619. Jesus makes at

  620. verse 16.

  621. He says, I

  622. have other

  623. sheep.

  624. Now in the

  625. context there,

  626. who's in his

  627. mind's eye?

  628. It's the

  629. Gentiles.

  630. Yeah?

  631. It's other

  632. sheep who in

  633. the years to

  634. come will hear

  635. the voice of

  636. the shepherd and

  637. will respond to

  638. his voice as

  639. his word goes

  640. forth.

  641. Before we

  642. move to

  643. Edinburgh, Alex

  644. and I spent

  645. five months in

  646. Malawi in this

  647. place called

  648. Blantyre.

  649. And it's called

  650. Blantyre because

  651. it's after one

  652. of Scotland's

  653. leading explorers

  654. slash missionaries

  655. called David

  656. Livingston.

  657. David Livingston

  658. takes the gospel

  659. to the people of

  660. Malawi.

  661. There's that close

  662. relationship that

  663. exists between

  664. Scotland and

  665. Malawi still to

  666. this day.

  667. I didn't know

  668. this, but in

  669. David Livingston's

  670. grave down in

  671. Westminster Abbey

  672. is this verse

  673. from John 10.

  674. I've got other

  675. sheep, says

  676. Jesus.

  677. I've got other

  678. sheep.

  679. In other words,

  680. I've got people

  681. all over the

  682. world, down the

  683. years, through

  684. the ages, who

  685. are going to

  686. respond to my

  687. voice as I

  688. call them to

  689. me.

  690. And here's the

  691. blessed thought

  692. this morning of

  693. you're a

  694. Christian.

  695. However weak

  696. you're feeling,

  697. however messy

  698. you think your

  699. life is, it's

  700. if your trust is

  701. in Jesus, you're

  702. here because you

  703. are in Jesus'

  704. mind as he

  705. said this.

  706. He called you

  707. by name.

  708. That should be a

  709. great evangelistic

  710. comfort to us,

  711. that Jesus is in

  712. the calling

  713. business.

  714. You know, my

  715. calls have little

  716. effect.

  717. We were at the

  718. Meadows Park

  719. yesterday, couldn't

  720. find one of our

  721. kids, shouting

  722. her name, no

  723. response.

  724. But Jesus

  725. calls his

  726. sheep and

  727. they respond to

  728. his voice.

  729. It's what's

  730. happening now.

  731. What gives us

  732. any confidence in

  733. evangelism is that

  734. Jesus, through his

  735. word as it goes

  736. forth, he has

  737. his people who

  738. will respond to

  739. his voice.

  740. As Danny goes

  741. off this morning,

  742. as she goes,

  743. and in her heart

  744. to go to

  745. Asia, what gives

  746. her any confidence

  747. this morning, and

  748. what gives us as

  749. we support her

  750. this morning as

  751. a church, any

  752. confidence that the

  753. Lord will do

  754. things through her

  755. and through her

  756. work, is this

  757. verse, that Jesus

  758. has other sheep.

  759. He has sheep all

  760. over the world who

  761. he wants to call

  762. to himself.

  763. I don't think

  764. anyone's expressed

  765. this better than

  766. American missionary

  767. D.L.

  768. Moody.

  769. He says this, and

  770. think about this, and

  771. I know for many of

  772. you God has laid

  773. things like this

  774. international mission

  775. work on your heart.

  776. He said this, God

  777. doesn't expect the

  778. impossible from us, but

  779. he wants us to

  780. expect the impossible

  781. from him.

  782. And you have to

  783. say, what a

  784. shepherd.

  785. Verse 20, some in

  786. this crowd say he's

  787. insane.

  788. Others, verse 21, say

  789. he couldn't have

  790. opened the eyes of

  791. the blind man if he

  792. wasn't who he says

  793. he is.

  794. And the question

  795. we've got to ask

  796. ourselves is how do

  797. we respond to the

  798. news of the good

  799. shepherd?

  800. Do you know his

  801. voice in your life

  802. presently?

  803. Maybe for some of

  804. us we've never heard

  805. nor responded to

  806. his voice.

  807. Well, I take it that

  808. as Jesus has walked

  809. off the pages of

  810. John chapter 10, and

    John 10 chapter mention

  811. as his voice has

  812. gone forth, that

  813. some of us need to

  814. stop and think about

  815. his claims about

  816. himself and about

  817. us.

  818. Dear friends, it is

  819. foolishness to go

  820. alone in life.

  821. But for us who

  822. know Jesus as our

  823. shepherd, I wonder

  824. if some of us just

  825. need to be still this

  826. morning and listen to

  827. him, to fix our eyes

  828. on him and follow.

  829. Let me ask you, are

  830. you, are we, letting

  831. the good shepherd feed

  832. and lead our souls as

  833. he speaks to us in his

  834. word?

  835. You know, there's a

  836. reason that so often

  837. the funerals that I've

  838. done over the years,

  839. 90% of them have

  840. featured Psalm 23.

  841. We don't have time

  842. this morning to go

  843. into the connections

  844. between Psalm 23 and

  845. John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  846. I would love to do

  847. that, except to say

  848. that Jesus steps right

  849. in to fulfill that

  850. psalm.

  851. But I love that bit in

  852. Psalm 23, as Jesus

  853. is the shepherd, leads

  854. us by still waters.

  855. What happens to our

  856. souls?

  857. He restores them by

  858. his word.

  859. What are you doing by

  860. means of cultivating

  861. that deep trust in and

  862. love for the great

  863. shepherd as he leads

  864. us through the ups and

  865. the downs of life?

  866. What a shepherd.

  867. You know, I heard, went

  868. for a walk with Ross this

  869. week and he said

  870. something about his

  871. dad.

  872. He said, my dad keeps

  873. saying, I just don't

  874. know how you would do

  875. this.

  876. I don't know how you

  877. would do this without

  878. Jesus.

  879. And it's so true, isn't

  880. it?

  881. It's so true.

  882. I just don't know how

  883. you would do it.

  884. I don't know how you

  885. would fathom it and get

  886. beyond it if it wasn't

  887. for the good shepherd.

  888. So friends, what animal

  889. would you be?

  890. And just as we close and

  891. as we think on that, and

  892. as we think about embracing

  893. the posture of a

  894. dependent sheep who's

  895. totally reliant on the

  896. good shepherd.

  897. You know, I had another

  898. shepherd in my mind this

  899. week.

  900. Life staging that.

  901. That I'm at.

  902. She's a shepherdess

  903. actually.

  904. I had little Bo Peep in

  905. my mind all this week.

  906. And I didn't know it

  907. until I googled it this

  908. week.

  909. And I don't know if you

  910. know this as well, that

  911. there's several verses to

  912. that nursery rhyme.

  913. Third verse.

  914. There's a lot of them.

  915. Goes like this.

  916. Little Bo Peep began to

  917. weep and lay down to rest

  918. for a while.

  919. She fell fast asleep while

  920. counting her sheep.

  921. Then dreamt they came

  922. home with a smile.

  923. And you have to say

  924. that's lovely and cute.

  925. And credit where credit's

  926. due, Bo Peep right there.

  927. She clearly loves her

  928. sheep.

  929. She loves her sheep.

  930. But she's also powerless

  931. to do anything to help

  932. them.

  933. And it strikes me that the

  934. Pharisees in John chapter

    John 10 chapter mention

  935. 10, sorry, in the

  936. background of John chapter

    John 10 chapter mention

  937. 10, do the opposite of

  938. Bo Peep.

  939. They've got all the power

  940. in the world to help

  941. people.

  942. All the power in the world

  943. to help the sheep.

  944. But because they don't

  945. love the sheep, they're not

  946. bothering.

  947. But what I want us to

  948. understand as we finish

  949. this morning about Jesus.

  950. Jesus is one who has both

  951. the power to help his sheep

  952. and the love for them that

  953. drives him to act.

  954. He is all power and he is

  955. all compassion.

  956. And they are married, both

  957. of those things, in the

  958. person of Jesus.

  959. Friends, our lives could not

  960. be in better hands than the

  961. hands of the good shepherd.

  962. And so three quick things as

  963. we close.

  964. Let's know his voice.

  965. Let's trust his heart.

  966. And let's follow his lead.

  967. Let's pray together.

  968. And so Father, I just pray in

  969. the silence now.

  970. Lord Jesus, as we've heard

  971. your voice in John chapter

    John 10 chapter mention

  972. 10, as you walk off the

  973. pages of the Bible.

  974. Lord, I pray that this voice

  975. would come as a challenge to

  976. many of us.

  977. I pray that it would come as a

  978. comforting balm to some of

  979. us.

  980. And Lord, it would come with

  981. great strength to all of us.

  982. And I pray particularly for

  983. those here today who are

  984. walking some of the darkest

  985. paths, through some of the

  986. darkest and scariest valleys,

  987. that they would be so aware of

  988. your rod and your staff in their

  989. lives.

  990. Lord, they would be so aware of

  991. your presence with them as you

  992. lead them and love them through

  993. the good shepherd.

  994. So I just close with that thought

  995. that Fraser brought this week to

  996. me.

  997. That I just don't know how you

  998. would do this without Jesus.

  999. And so Lord, I pray that as we

1000. finish our service and as we spend

1001. time together and as you, as we

1002. speak, Lord, that your spirit would be

1003. ministering to us in our

1004. conversations, that we would be

1005. bringing the truth of God's word to

  1006. bear on our lives.

1007. Father, help us to be a community

1008. that is founded on the truth of the

  1009. gospel.

1010. Father, we just thank you as we

1011. close for your incomparable love

  1012. and commitment to us.

1013. In Jesus is worthy and in his

  1014. precious name we pray.

  1015. Amen.
