  1. Thanks very much, Naomi. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Whether you're here in the church or online, I'm delighted to welcome you.

  3. As we've been reflecting, this has been a week when we have been weeping with those who weep as a church.

  4. Under these circumstances, there are two great resources that we have.

  5. One we've used already this morning, it is praying for one another,

  6. and particularly praying for those who are mourning,

  7. and I'm sure the McLaren family will be very much still in our prayers over the coming weeks.

  8. And the second great resource is God's Word, the Bible.

  9. And we go to it for comfort and for strength, and sometimes for challenge in times like this.

  10. And so this morning, we want to look at what God has to say to us through his Word,

  11. and particularly what God has to say to us about Jesus,

  12. and how Jesus can be with us even in the most difficult of times.

  13. Let me begin with one of my favourite Christian quotations.

  14. It is by the Swiss theologian Carol Barth.

  15. Carol Barth was widely recognised as one of the foremost Christian thinkers of the 20th century,

  16. and you may well be familiar with the quotation.

  17. Barth went on a lecture tour in the United States in the early 1960s,

  18. and as often happens with these things, he invited questions at the end of his lectures.

  19. And one of the students said to him,

  20. Professor Barth, are you able to summarise in one sentence the whole of your life's work in theology?

  21. So I'm going to challenge that.

  22. Summarise in one sentence the whole of his life's work.

  23. And Carol Barth said,

  24. Isn't that powerful?

  25. This great intellect, this man who studied in much more depth than any of us will ever be able to,

  26. God's Word.

  27. And yet when it came down to it, all boiled down to this,

  28. Jesus loves me.

  29. I was thinking also of the Apostle Paul,

  30. Paul who wrote almost half the books of the New Testament,

  31. whose theology particularly of what it means that Christ died for us,

  32. is by God's divine inspiration the basis for much of what we as Christians believe.

  33. Paul was in Philippi with his companion Silas.

  34. They were put in prison, and there was a great earthquake in the night.

  35. And the jailer ran in, and he was suicidal.

  36. And he said, what must I do to be saved?

  37. No time for Paul to explain the doctrine of justification by faith

  38. or any of the other things that we read in his letters.

  39. Very simply he said, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,

  40. and you will be saved.

  41. See, there are many difficult things in our Bibles.

  42. Many things we don't understand.

  43. But the basis of Christian faith,

  44. our trust in the Lord Jesus,

  45. is very simple.

  46. Jesus loves me.

  47. Jesus went to the cross and died for me.

  48. And if I believe in him,

  49. I can be forgiven for my sins.

  50. When we come to John's gospel,

  51. which we've been in for quite a while now,

  52. again, there's a lot of complexity.

  53. You may have come across some of that in your growth groups

  54. over the last few weeks.

  55. A lot of things that are difficult for us to understand.

  56. But very simply,

  57. John is just trying to present to us Jesus

  58. and to help us to come to belief in him.

  59. To believe that Jesus is the Son of God,

  60. that Jesus is the Messiah,

  61. that Jesus can be our Savior.

  62. Summed up, perhaps,

  63. very well for many of us in John 3, 16,

  64. God so loved the world

  65. that he gave his one and only Son

  66. that whoever believes in him

  67. shall not perish,

  68. but have eternal life.

  69. And as I've been studying in John 10 this week,

  70. I've been very struck

  71. by the basic simplicity that there is there,

  72. even though there's a lot of complexity.

  73. There are some things in this passage,

  74. and we won't be able to do more

  75. and scratch the surface of them.

  76. There are some things in this passage

  77. that keep people like Carol Barth

  78. occupied all their professional life.

  79. But very simply,

  80. there are two lessons

  81. which I have taken from it this morning.

  82. One is that we have to consider

  83. who Jesus is.

  84. There are two groups of people.

  85. There are some who believe in Jesus,

  86. and there are some who don't.

  87. We'll see that as we go through the passage.

  88. And John is saying to us,

  89. Jesus is saying to us in this passage,

  90. just look at the evidence.

  91. Look at who I am

  92. and what I've done

  93. and believe.

  94. And that's one thing

  95. we would want all of us

  96. to get to this morning,

  97. to look at the evidence of Jesus,

  98. to see him as he is,

  99. and to believe in him.

  100. The other is just one verse,

  101. one verse which,

  102. in the circumstances of this week,

  103. it really stood out to me.

  104. If you've got your Bibles,

  105. verse 28,

  106. where Jesus is talking about his sheep,

  107. and he says,

  108. I give them eternal life,

  109. and they shall never perish.

  110. No one will snatch them out of my hand.

  111. What a wonderful truth that is,

  112. that if we trust the Lord Jesus,

  113. if our faith is in him,

  114. if we are following him,

  115. if he is our shepherd,

  116. then there is nothing

  117. that can separate us from him.

  118. We can never be snatched away

  119. in good times or bad times,

  120. in health,

  121. in sickness,

  122. in life,

  123. in death.

  124. Our good shepherd is there for us,

  125. giving life that can never be taken away.

  126. And those who leave this world through death,

  127. if they know the Lord Jesus,

  128. they go to somewhere much better,

  129. and they have joy

  130. unconfined with their sufferings behind them.

  131. And that truth must be a great comfort to us this week.

  132. So, I want very simply to look through this passage.

  133. We'll divide it into three sections,

  134. and we'll draw some conclusions at the end

  135. about our faith in the Lord Jesus.

  136. Let's begin, though, with a bit of background.

  137. I think it's always good

  138. if we understand a passage

  139. in its original context.

  140. So, for the last couple of months or so,

  141. we've been going through a section of John's Gospel

  142. which runs from chapter 5

  143. through to chapter 10,

  144. and is built around the feasts,

  145. the festivals of the Jews.

  146. And this section is broadly made up of three things.

  147. There are miracles,

  148. there are what we might call monologues,

  149. Jesus' teaching,

  150. and there is dialogue,

  151. largely Jesus debating

  152. with the religious leaders.

  153. And John's purpose,

  154. and it has in all of his Gospel,

  155. is to demonstrate to us

  156. that Jesus is the Messiah,

  157. the Son of God.

  158. Over the last few weeks,

  159. we've been at the Feast of Tabernacles,

  160. which takes place around September time.

  161. Today, we've moved on,

  162. and we're at the Feast of Dedication.

  163. So, we're about three months

  164. before the death of the Lord Jesus

  165. in December.

  166. The Feast of Dedication

  167. is probably better known

  168. to most of us today

  169. as Hanukkah,

  170. one of the Jewish festivals

  171. which is reasonably well known

  172. and certainly is taught

  173. in many schools in our country.

  174. The Feast of Dedication

  175. remembered a time of the Jews

  176. which we won't find in our Bibles.

  177. It happened between the Old

  178. and the New Testament.

  179. And in that period,

  180. the nation was ruled

  181. by Greek Hellenic rulers,

  182. descendants or successors

  183. of Alexander the Great.

  184. And one of these

  185. was Antiochus Epiphanes.

  186. And he was a very cruel

  187. and uncaring ruler.

  188. One of the things he did

  189. was to say

  190. the Jewish religion is banned.

  191. You can no longer worship

  192. as you should.

  193. He desecrated the temple.

  194. He took away a lot

  195. of the religious objects

  196. and he forced the people

  197. to use pigs

  198. in their sacrifice

  199. which would be horrific

  200. for Jews.

  201. Now sadly,

  202. most of the priests

  203. at that time

  204. went along with them.

  205. They were more interested

  206. in saving their skin

  207. than they were

  208. in keeping true

  209. to God's faith.

  210. But there was one priest

  211. called Mattathias

  212. and his sons

  213. who set up

  214. a kind of grill operation

  215. against the rulers

  216. of the time.

  217. And the best known

  218. of these

  219. is Judas Maccabeus.

  220. And Judas Maccabeus

  221. eventually recaptured Jerusalem.

  222. And when he did,

  223. he rededicated the temple

  224. to God.

  225. And that's what

  226. is being remembered

  227. in this Feast of Dedications

  228. or Hanukkah.

  229. Now it's relevant

  230. to this passage

  231. because as you go through it,

  232. and we won't spend

  233. a lot of time

  234. looking at that,

  235. but as you go through it,

  236. there are reflections,

  237. there are things

  238. which are specific

  239. to this particular feast.

  240. For example,

  241. in verse 36,

  242. the Lord Jesus talks

  243. about being set apart

  244. by God.

  245. The word really

  246. is dedicated.

  247. It's the same word

  248. that was used

  249. when the temple

  250. was restored.

  251. And the Lord Jesus

  252. maybe is there

  253. giving echoes

  254. of in chapter 2

  255. when he talks about

  256. the temple

  257. by which he meant

  258. his body being destroyed

  259. and built again

  260. in three days.

  261. Also,

  262. during this festival,

  263. one of the readings

  264. was from Ezekiel chapter 34.

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  265. Graham referred to that

  266. last week.

  267. It's a chapter

  268. about the leaders of Israel,

  269. the shepherds of Israel,

  270. and how they have failed God.

  271. And so Jesus presents himself here

  272. as the good shepherd,

  273. as the shepherd

  274. who won't fail us.

  275. But perhaps most powerful of all,

  276. the Feast of Dedications

  277. was a time

  278. when the Jews looked back

  279. to one of their great heroes,

  280. to Judas Maccabeus

  281. who had freed them

  282. from the grip

  283. of the Greek army.

  284. And the Jews

  285. in first century Israel

  286. were looking for another hero,

  287. someone who would release them

  288. from the Romans,

  289. the one who would be

  290. the Messiah promised

  291. in the Old Testament.

  292. And perhaps that's why

  293. as Jesus is walking

  294. through the temple courts,

  295. the people said to him,

  296. how long will you

  297. keep us in suspense

  298. if you are the Messiah?

  299. Tell us plainly.

  300. Now I don't think

  301. this was just a kind of

  302. positive question

  303. they were asking.

  304. It was very much

  305. a loaded one.

  306. The language that's used

  307. that Jesus is walking

  308. through the temple,

  309. they surround him,

  310. and they I think

  311. are being quite hostile

  312. and are looking for a reason

  313. to condemn him.

  314. So it's not a straightforward

  315. question,

  316. but it's a very relevant

  317. one for them

  318. and for us.

  319. Is Jesus the Messiah?

  320. Is Jesus the Son of God?

  321. And so Jesus answers,

  322. he answers again

  323. slightly obliquely,

  324. but in a way that makes

  325. it very clear

  326. that yes,

  327. he is the Son of God,

  328. yes,

  329. he is the Messiah.

  330. And so in the opening

  331. verses of the passage,

  332. we have the sheep

  333. and the shepherd

  334. brought before us.

  335. Now you remember

  336. we hear last week

  337. that Graham talked

  338. in some detail

  339. about the sheep

  340. and the shepherd.

  341. That's very much

  342. the theme

  343. of the first part

  344. of John 10.

  345. The Lord Jesus

  346. returns to it here.

  347. And he says

  348. two things.

  349. He says,

  350. my sheep

  351. listen to my voice

  352. and I give them

  353. eternal life.

  354. My sheep

  355. listen to

  356. my voice.

  357. Those who are

  358. Jesus' sheep

  359. who recognise

  360. his voice

  361. and they respond

  362. to it.

  363. Let's have a little

  364. diversion just for a second

  365. and I want to talk

  366. about empire penguins.

  367. Empire penguins,

  368. of course,

  369. live in the Antarctic

  370. and they tend to live

  371. in big colonies

  372. that stick together

  373. by and large.

  374. But each empire penguin

  375. has a mate,

  376. they have one mate

  377. and after the female

  378. lays the eggs,

  379. the male stands

  380. and incubates the eggs

  381. for the chick

  382. to hatch

  383. while the female

  384. goes out to sea

  385. and gathers food

  386. for the chick.

  387. Now we're not talking

  388. about going out

  389. and coming back

  390. the same day,

  391. it could easily be

  392. a couple of months

  393. or more.

  394. And the female penguin

  395. arrives back

  396. and you've got

  397. this big pack of ice

  398. and lots of penguins

  399. who all look the same.

  400. I think even to penguins

  401. they all look

  402. pretty similar.

  403. How is she going

  404. to find her mate?

  405. How is she going

  406. to find her chick?

  407. And the amazing thing is

  408. that the female empire penguin

  409. is able to call out

  410. in a way that is unique

  411. to her

  412. and the male,

  413. her mate,

  414. can respond to it.

  415. He's been listening

  416. for her voice

  417. as he's hashed the chick

  418. and when the female

  419. comes back

  420. above all the noise

  421. round about

  422. he hears her voice

  423. and he responds to it

  424. and the family

  425. are reunited.

  426. I think that's a great picture

  427. of what Jesus

  428. is telling us here.

  429. There are lots of noises

  430. in our world today.

  431. Lots of things

  432. that would distract us

  433. and draw us away

  434. from God.

  435. But Jesus says

  436. those who are my sheep

  437. they hear my voice

  438. they recognize it

  439. they trust in me

  440. and they follow me

  441. because they know

  442. that they can have

  443. confidence in me.

  444. My sheep

  445. listen to my voice

  446. I know them

  447. and they follow me.

  448. Then there's a verse

  449. that I highlighted

  450. at the beginning

  451. the eternal life

  452. that Jesus gives us.

  453. I give them eternal life

  454. and they shall never perish

  455. no one

  456. will snatch them

  457. from my hand.

  458. Paul put it slightly differently.

  459. Nothing in all creation

  460. will be able to separate us

  461. from the love of God

  462. that is in Christ Jesus

  463. our Lord.

  464. What a wonderful blessing

  465. that is

  466. for those who know

  467. and love the Lord Jesus

  468. that whatever happens

  469. whatever goes on

  470. in our lives

  471. whether there's happiness

  472. whether there's sadness

  473. whether there's sickness

  474. whether there are

  475. all sorts of problems

  476. even when it comes to death

  477. we have the protection

  478. of the shepherd

  479. and we know

  480. that we will go

  481. to be with him

  482. when we leave

  483. this life.

  484. But that's the blessing

  485. of the sheep

  486. there's a little bit more

  487. about the shepherd

  488. in this bit as well

  489. and this is where it gets

  490. really quite difficult

  491. and I'm going to cover this

  492. very briefly.

  493. So the Lord Jesus says

  494. in verse 29

  495. my father

  496. has given them to me

  497. who has given them to me

  498. it's greater than all

  499. no one can snatch them

  500. out of my father's hands.

  501. Now when I'm speaking to you

  502. I'm saying to you

  503. you have a decision

  504. to make about Jesus

  505. will you trust in him

  506. or not?

  507. And yet here Jesus is saying

  508. that actually the sheep

  509. are given to him

  510. by the father.

  511. The father is the one

  512. who chooses us

  513. to belong to Jesus

  514. and to follow him.

  515. And this apparent contradiction

  516. is one that's exercised Christians

  517. I think throughout

  518. the whole of Christianity.

  519. On the one hand

  520. we need to choose

  521. and we do need to choose

  522. to follow Jesus.

  523. on the other hand

  524. we are only going to make

  525. that decision

  526. among the hubbub

  527. of the voices

  528. and the distractions

  529. around about us

  530. if God works in us

  531. and draws us to Jesus

  532. and enables us

  533. to make that right choice.

  534. And the truth is not

  535. somewhere in the middle

  536. it's at both ends.

  537. We need to choose

  538. and yet at the same time

  539. God chooses us.

  540. And I don't understand it fully

  541. I'm sure you probably

  542. don't either

  543. but it's a wonderful truth.

  544. In the words of

  545. a great modern hymn

  546. loved before the dawn of time

  547. chosen by my maker

  548. hidden in my saviour

  549. I am his

  550. and he is mine

  551. cherished

  552. for eternity.

  553. So that's the first difficult

  554. but wonderful thing

  555. in these verses.

  556. Then as we go on

  557. into verse 31

  558. sorry 30 it is

  559. Jesus says

  560. I and the Father

  561. are one.

  562. And that brings us

  563. to another great

  564. and very difficult

  565. truth.

  566. How can it be

  567. there is one God

  568. but there are two

  569. actually three

  570. if we include the Holy Spirit

  571. three persons.

  572. What does the Lord Jesus

  573. mean when he says

  574. I and the Father

  575. are one?

  576. Well if I can be

  577. a little bit technical

  578. the word that's used

  579. for Jesus talking about

  580. being one

  581. is neuter

  582. in the original Greek

  583. so that means

  584. that it's not saying

  585. me and I

  586. and the Father

  587. are the same person.

  588. It is saying

  589. we have the same purpose

  590. that the Lord Jesus

  591. came to fulfil

  592. the Father's purpose

  593. in his life

  594. and we see that clearly

  595. as we go through John.

  596. But I think it's clear

  597. from the passage

  598. that it's more than that.

  599. If that had been

  600. all the Lord Jesus

  601. had been saying

  602. and the people

  603. had understood

  604. then they wouldn't

  605. have reacted

  606. so strongly

  607. against him.

  608. And the Lord Jesus

  609. is saying I believe

  610. that he and the Father

  611. although distinct

  612. persons

  613. they are in essence

  614. the same

  615. they are one in nature

  616. that he is

  617. truly God.

  618. And again

  619. the mystery of the Trinity

  620. is something that we will

  621. never probably fully

  622. understand

  623. in this slide

  624. but isn't it wonderful

  625. that God

  626. the Son of God

  627. truly God himself

  628. came into our world

  629. and lived

  630. among us.

  631. We beheld his glory

  632. says John

  633. the glory of the one

  634. and only Son

  635. of the Father.

  636. Now I've skated over

  637. that very quickly

  638. if you want to talk

  639. about it later

  640. please do

  641. but two wonderful

  642. but difficult truths.

  643. Let's move on

  644. through the passage

  645. though

  646. because our time

  647. is going

  648. and we'll look at

  649. verses 31 to 39

  650. which I've given

  651. the heading

  652. the words

  653. and the works.

  654. So the Jews

  655. recognising

  656. that rightly

  657. that Jesus

  658. has claimed to be God

  659. in verse 30

  660. they react strongly

  661. against that

  662. and they try

  663. to stone him

  664. and then again

  665. at the end

  666. they try

  667. to seize him.

  668. And then in the middle

  669. we have

  670. a slightly

  671. strange conversation

  672. I think

  673. it probably

  674. doesn't mean

  675. as much

  676. to us

  677. in our culture

  678. as it would have

  679. then.

  680. But very simply

  681. what Jesus says

  682. quoting from

  683. Psalm 82

  684. is that in that

  685. Psalm

  686. God calls

  687. the people

  688. who actually

  689. were corrupt leaders

  690. he calls them

  691. gods

  692. he calls them

  693. sons of the most high

  694. and Jesus says

  695. well if he says that

  696. about these people

  697. who you could look at

  698. and think

  699. they were nothing

  700. like God

  701. why couldn't he

  702. say it about me

  703. when I'm his son

  704. after all

  705. that I've done.

  706. But he backs

  707. that up

  708. with evidence

  709. and his evidence

  710. is the works

  711. that he has

  712. done.

  713. The lame

  714. walk

  715. that was John 5

  716. the hangrier

  717. fed

  718. that's John 6

  719. the storm

  720. is still

  721. John 6 again

  722. the blind

  723. see

  724. John 9

  725. and Jesus says

  726. look at all

  727. these things

  728. that I've done

  729. are they not

  730. evidence

  731. that I am God

  732. that I am

  733. the son

  734. of God

  735. the blind man

  736. we met

  737. in John 9

  738. said something

  739. similar

  740. how could he

  741. do these things

  742. if he wasn't

  743. from God

  744. and Jesus

  745. says

  746. what he has done

  747. these signs

  748. that he has given

  749. they are the evidence

  750. if they won't

  751. listen to his words

  752. and they won't

  753. give him a fair

  754. hearing

  755. these signs

  756. that he has done

  757. are the evidence

  758. that he truly

  759. is God

  760. and for us today

  761. if you are wondering

  762. who is Jesus

  763. if you are unsure

  764. about him

  765. then go to the Bible

  766. go to the Gospels

  767. John's Gospel

  768. or Luke

  769. or any of the others

  770. read them

  771. with an open mind

  772. looking for truth

  773. and the Lord Jesus

  774. will jump out at you

  775. from the pages

  776. and you will see

  777. that what he said

  778. here is true

  779. that he is the one

  780. who came from God

  781. who spoke the most

  782. marvellous words

  783. and who did

  784. the most amazing things

  785. culminating

  786. in his own

  787. resurrection

  788. then the third part

  789. of the section

  790. Jesus moves away

  791. from Jerusalem

  792. this will be

  793. the last time

  794. he's in Jerusalem

  795. before he comes

  796. on Palm Sunday

  797. and moves towards

  798. his crucifixion

  799. and where he goes

  800. to is something

  801. very significant

  802. he goes to where

  803. it all started

  804. in John's Gospel

  805. he goes to the place

  806. where John the Baptist

  807. was baptising

  808. that most likely

  809. was in the vicinity

  810. of Jericho

  811. in the Jordan

  812. not too far

  813. from Jericho

  814. you remember

  815. when Jesus came back

  816. to Jerusalem

  817. he came back

  818. through Jericho

  819. and the reception

  820. here is

  821. very different

  822. the people here

  823. remember

  824. what John said

  825. they remember

  826. how John had

  827. pointed to Jesus

  828. the one that's coming

  829. is greater

  830. than I am

  831. I'm not even worthy

  832. to untie

  833. his shoes

  834. he said

  835. here is the one

  836. who is the Lamb of God

  837. who takes away

  838. the sin of the world

  839. he says

  840. he must increase

  841. and I must

  842. decrease

  843. and these people

  844. who had heard John

  845. and who had believed

  846. what John said

  847. they can now

  848. look at Jesus

  849. and say

  850. yes this was the one

  851. who John

  852. talked about

  853. we see the evidence

  854. we see the signs

  855. John always calls

  856. the miracle signs

  857. we see the signs

  858. and we know

  859. the truth

  860. what a contrast

  861. from those in Jerusalem

  862. the ones in Jerusalem

  863. mainly the Jewish

  864. religious leaders

  865. they had totally

  866. closed minds

  867. they weren't willing

  868. to consider fairly

  869. Jesus claims

  870. in this place

  871. in the desert

  872. far away from

  873. the metropolis

  874. here are the people

  875. who really trust in him

  876. and who see

  877. yes there's authenticity

  878. here

  879. and we believe

  880. in him

  881. but as we look

  882. at the signs

  883. let's not forget

  884. the signpost

  885. John's teaching

  886. is really important

  887. in this

  888. John pointed

  889. the people

  890. towards

  891. Jesus

  892. so that when

  893. they met Jesus

  894. when they found out

  895. more about him

  896. they were able

  897. to recognise him

  898. and to come

  899. to trust

  900. in him

  901. and can I say

  902. that all of us

  903. if we are Christians

  904. if our trust

  905. is in the Lord Jesus

  906. we too

  907. are signposts

  908. we should be those

  909. who direct

  910. people to Jesus

  911. not that we're

  912. going to save them

  913. not that we're even

  914. going to convince them

  915. by ourselves

  916. but point them

  917. to Jesus

  918. help them to understand

  919. what they need

  920. and help them

  921. to see

  922. that in Jesus

  923. these needs

  924. can be met

  925. if God

  926. will open their hearts

  927. then through our witness

  928. they may come

  929. to know

  930. the Lord Jesus

  931. going back to

  932. Carol Barth

  933. to finish

  934. Carol Barth

  935. had a picture

  936. or painting

  937. of the crucifixion

  938. on his wall

  939. by an artist

  940. called

  941. Matthias Grunwald

  942. and in this painting

  943. it's Jesus

  944. on the cross

  945. on one side

  946. you have

  947. John

  948. his disciple

  949. with Mary

  950. the Lord's mother

  951. and also Mary Magdalene

  952. and on the other side

  953. you have

  954. John the Baptist

  955. now this isn't

  956. intended to be

  957. historically accurate

  958. because John the Baptist

  959. was martyred

  960. quite a long time

  961. before Jesus

  962. was crucified

  963. but the significant

  964. of John the Baptist

  965. well there's a

  966. lamb standing

  967. at his feet

  968. but the really

  969. significant thing

  970. is that his index finger

  971. I think it's

  972. slightly exaggerated

  973. is pointing

  974. towards Jesus

  975. his duty

  976. John knew

  977. was to point

  978. people to Jesus

  979. and when people

  980. came to visit

  981. Carol Barth

  982. and they maybe

  983. commented

  984. on the painting

  985. Carol Barth

  986. would say

  987. I want to be

  988. that finger

  989. I want to be

  990. someone

  991. who points

  992. people to Jesus

  993. and helps them

  994. to see him

  995. as the one

  996. who died

  997. for their sins

  998. and that for us

  999. if we're Christians

  1000. that should be

  1001. our ambition

  1002. as well

  1003. and that's been

  1004. my job today

  1005. to point you

  1006. to Jesus

  1007. to talk about

  1008. what the Bible

  1009. says about him

  1010. about the way

  1011. in which he

  1012. demonstrated

  1013. so clearly

  1014. that he was God

  1015. and that he was

  1016. the Messiah

  1017. who had been

  1018. promised

  1019. that in some

  1020. ways is simple

  1021. but each of us

  1022. has to make

  1023. our own

  1024. decision

  1025. we can point

  1026. but we can't

  1027. make people

  1028. decide

  1029. for Jesus

  1030. so the question

1031. today for all of us

  1032. is what is

  1033. our attitude

  1034. towards Jesus

  1035. are we like

  1036. the Jews

  1037. in Jerusalem

  1038. the religious leaders

  1039. who wanted

  1040. nothing to do

  1041. with him

  1042. just wanted

  1043. to be rid

  1044. of him

  1045. or are we

  1046. like the people

  1047. in the desert

  1048. there

  1049. who looked

  1050. at the evidence

  1051. who remembered

  1052. what had been

  1053. taught to them

  1054. and had trusted

  1055. in Jesus

  1056. we don't need

  1057. to understand

  1058. everything

  1059. to believe

  1060. we never will

  1061. understand everything

  1062. but the basics

  1063. of our Christian

  1064. faith

  1065. are very simple

  1066. and if today

  1067. you're grieving

  1068. find your comfort

  1069. in Jesus

  1070. if you're troubled

  1071. in heart

  1072. find your peace

  1073. in Jesus

  1074. if you're apprehensive

  1075. about the future

  1076. find your hope

  1077. in Jesus

  1078. if you're feeling

1079. the weight of your sin

  1080. find forgiveness

  1081. in Jesus

  1082. whatever your circumstances

  1083. find in Jesus

  1084. true love

  1085. Jesus loves me

  1086. this I know

  1087. for the Bible

  1088. tells me so

  1089. let's pray together

  1090. our Father

  1091. we thank you

  1092. for the Lord

  1093. Jesus

  1094. we thank you

  1095. for the way

  1096. in which he

  1097. came into our world

  1098. as your son

  1099. lived among us

  1100. as God

  1101. with men

  1102. a perfect life

  1103. showed us

  1104. what God is like

  1105. did such

  1106. wonderful things

  1107. and taught in such

  1108. wonderful ways

  1109. and then ultimately

  1110. went to the cross

1111. and died for our sins

  1112. but arose again

  1113. triumphantly

  1114. and today

  1115. we look to him

1116. and we point to him

  1117. and we say

  1118. he is the one

  1119. whom all of us

  1120. need

  1121. whatever our circumstances

  1122. he is the one

  1123. who can meet

  1124. our needs

  1125. and we pray

  1126. that all of us

  1127. will come to that

  1128. trust in him

  1129. to be those

  1130. who hear

  1131. the shepherd's voice

  1132. and who respond

  1133. and who follow

  1134. and again

  1135. we would lovingly

  1136. commit to you

  1137. those who are

  1138. particularly sad

  1139. this morning

  1140. we pray for Fraser

  1141. and Ross

  1142. and Jack

  1143. for Lynn and Fraser's

  1144. parents

  1145. and other family members

1146. and we ask that you

1147. will be very near to them

1148. and that they will know

  1149. the comfort

  1150. that can only come

  1151. through Jesus

  1152. and the confidence

  1153. the hope

  1154. we have in him

  1155. we thank you

  1156. for our time together

  1157. and we commit ourselves

  1158. to you

  1159. in Jesus name

  1160. Amen

  1161. Amen
