  1. Okay, the one verse that I want us to look at

  2. and hopefully memorize is Psalm 119, verse 28.

    Psalms 119:28

  3. My soul is weary with sorrow.

  4. Strengthen me according to your word.

  5. One of the most annoying, irritating questions

  6. in the whole world is the question,

  7. how are you?

  8. Now, sometimes it's irritating because of the person asking it.

  9. So they ask you, how are you?

  10. But by how they then kind of conduct themselves after that,

  11. they reveal they don't give a toss about what your answer is.

  12. They don't even listen to what you're saying.

  13. So you could reply to the question, how are you, by saying,

  14. my cat just got eaten by a badger

  15. and my dad's in intensive care and my leg's just falling off

  16. and they can go, oh, that's nice.

  17. You know people like that?

  18. They don't even listen to what you're saying.

  19. Irritating.

  20. But sometimes the people who are irritating

  21. are the people who answer the question.

  22. And normally because we verge on kind of two extremes of dishonesty.

  23. So the question is asked, how are you?

  24. And some people have had a lot going on in their life

  25. so their cat might have just been eaten by a badger

  26. and dad is in intensive care

  27. and their leg has just fallen off.

  28. But they reply by going, yeah, I'm good.

  29. Fine.

  30. Liar.

  31. Christians are the worst, aren't we?

  32. I'm fine.

  33. Sometimes, though, there's other people who treat that question

  34. as like a competition to try and win the kind of

  35. whose day's been the crappiest competition.

  36. And we're out for like maybe to manipulate emotions,

  37. maybe to get something from the other person.

  38. And so the response is, oh, my cat just got eaten by a badger

  39. and my dad's in intensive care and my leg's just falling off.

  40. When in reality, they've never had a cat.

  41. Their dad's maybe got a wee tickly cough

  42. and they've ripped their tights, but that's the extent of need.

  43. But they're exaggerating for the sake of a little bit of empathy.

  44. We're terrible at answering and asking the question, how are you?

  45. But the reality is, every time you come to God's Word of the Bible,

  46. God is asking you that question.

  47. How are you?

  48. And if the God of the Bible is real,

  49. then dishonesty at that point is completely pointless.

  50. He knows everything.

  51. He sees everything.

  52. All of my emotions, my motives, my thoughts, my past,

  53. my scars, my nightmares, my fears, my relapses,

  54. my darkness, my depression, my mania, my lies,

  55. my prayers, my past, my future, everything.

  56. It's like an open book to him.

  57. And so, listen, that means church is not just an hour a week

  58. where you turn up slightly smarter than you've been for the rest of the week.

  59. And maybe with your kids encouraged to be slightly better behaved

  60. than they have been the rest of the week,

  61. to present some kind of disguise or mask.

  62. It's about coming as you are to the God who already knows how you are.

  63. And the hope that the Bible holds out for us depends on the extent

  64. that we are honest with him.

  65. And what we're going to see today is that when we are honest about how we actually are,

  66. God gives us exactly what we need.

  67. That's the first half of this verse.

  68. Look at it again.

  69. Psalm 119, verse 28.

    Psalms 119:28

  70. It is this guy responding to the question, how are you?

  71. And he answers, my soul is weary with sorrow.

  72. Now, let me ask three questions just to kind of dig into this a little bit.

  73. We're going to ask what, where, and why.

  74. So question one, what's he feeling?

  75. Answer, weary.

  76. Ever been there?

  77. The word that's used weary there is also used in the Bible to describe a leak in a house.

  78. So the word is giving you a picture, conjuring up something in your mind

  79. that weariness feels that life is leaking out of you.

  80. It's a classic cartoon sketch.

  81. You know when there's a leak in a pipe and you go,

  82. and then suddenly it's just everywhere else.

  83. You know that feeling of, it's just emptying out of me,

  84. and I'm left with nothing.

  85. I'm empty.

  86. The same word is also used in the Bible to describe the eyes,

  87. pouring out tears.

  88. Here's a man who knows that crying is tiring.

  89. He's done.

  90. You can also translate the word as melting.

  91. He feels like his life is just dissolving.

  92. It's like a snowman in a sauna.

  93. It's just disappearing from him.

  94. Weary.

  95. Some of us know what that is like intimately.

  96. That's what.

  97. Question two, where?

  98. Where is he feeling this?

  99. He says, my soul is weary.

  100. Now we all know what it is to feel physically tired,

  101. but that's not what he's talking about here.

  102. We don't just have a body that grows and then gradually decays.

  103. We have a soul that lives and lives on forever.

  104. The soul is the life that God has breathed into us.

  105. It is not so much that we have a soul,

  106. but we are a soul.

  107. It's what we are.

  108. It's the precious inner constant,

  109. despite all of our life's outward changes.

  110. It's my longings and my feelings and my hurts.

  111. It's everything on that scale from delight to depression.

  112. It's that part of me that gets overwhelmed and overthinks.

  113. It's the soul.

  114. And it seems to be involved in everything we do in this world,

  115. but it also seems to be unable to be satisfied by anything in this world.

  116. My soul is weary.

  117. Never felt that?

  118. Now identifying the wear of his weariness is important

  119. because the wear of the symptoms will impact the what of the treatment.

  120. So if part of our weariness is physical,

  121. you might need rest.

  122. You might need physio.

  123. That's true.

  124. It might be that part of your weariness comes from some kind of chemical imbalance

  125. in your brain.

  126. So you might need medication.

  127. But if part of your weariness is in your God-given soul,

  128. then we need a remedy that is more than a physio's manipulation

  129. or more than a doctor's medication.

  130. The question is,

  131. who can cure a soul?

  132. That's what we're going to get to when we get to the second half of the verse.

  133. What weary were the soul?

  134. Question three, why?

  135. My soul is weary with sorrow.

  136. Now we don't exactly know what has been going on in this guy's life.

  137. We don't know if he's in danger.

  138. We don't know if folk are after him.

  139. We don't know if someone close to him or something that belonged to him has gone.

  140. It's possible that he's sorrowful because he's been sinful.

  141. If you look at verse 25,

  142. he talks about feeling stuck in the dust.

  143. So maybe he's referring to that kind of sin curse of,

  144. to dust you will return.

  145. In verse 29,

  146. he asks to be kept from deceitful ways.

  147. So maybe he's been bang at it.

  148. But we don't know.

  149. Actually,

  150. the fact that it's undefined

  151. means that I can make this verse mine.

  152. My soul

  153. is weary with

  154. my sorrow.

  155. Been there?

  156. You feel that?

  157. Now we are going to get to the second half of the verse and go,

  158. well, where does he find relief?

  159. Where does he find escape?

  160. Where does he find answer?

  161. But before we get to that too quickly,

  162. we need to acknowledge

  163. that wherever he is going to go,

  164. we've got places that we normally go.

  165. Now,

  166. in our sorrow,

  167. it's often somewhere that we can get stuck.

  168. We kind of get wedged

  169. into our

  170. weariness.

  171. Maybe some of us in the room this morning are going,

  172. I've only ever lived in the first half of this verse.

  173. That's been my whole life.

  174. My soul,

  175. weary with sorrow.

  176. And we've probably got

  177. some ingrained habits

  178. and kind of coping mechanisms

  179. of where

  180. our weary soul

  181. has traveled

  182. to try and find answers.

  183. So maybe there's

  184. well-traveled paths

  185. from our weary souls

  186. to

  187. retail therapy

  188. where we try and spoil ourselves

  189. when we feel like

  190. we are

  191. spoiled.

  192. Maybe

  193. to the makeup counter

  194. when our head is telling us

  195. that we're ugly.

  196. Maybe to

  197. the dealer

  198. to escape

  199. what won't stop haunting us.

  200. Maybe to the off-license

  201. to try and numb

  202. all of the noise.

  203. Maybe to pornography

  204. to try and escape

  205. the boredom.

  206. Maybe to the gaming

  207. world

  208. when reality

  209. is just too overwhelming.

  210. Maybe to self-harm

  211. when life feels

  212. out of control.

  213. Or maybe

  214. just to phone

  215. Just Eat

  216. because

  217. it offers

  218. comfort

  219. amid

  220. a world

  221. that is

  222. dissatisfying.

  223. But there's

  224. well-trodden paths

  225. to all of these things

  226. and the truth is

  227. they have never

  228. got us

  229. out of the first half

  230. of this verse.

  231. They're well-trodden paths

  232. because we have

  233. walked them

  234. often

  235. but we are

  236. still

  237. stuck.

  238. My soul

  239. is weary

  240. with sorrow.

  241. And we need

  242. to see these things

  243. and say

  244. a bit like the language

  245. in 119

  246. verse 32

  247. they have promised

  248. to make us

  249. run

  250. but in reality

  251. they have

  252. left us

  253. stuck.

  254. They promised

  255. enjoyment

  256. they have left

  257. us

  258. enslaved.

  259. My soul

  260. is still

  261. weary

  262. with sorrow.

  263. So how do we

  264. get out of the

  265. first half

  266. of the verse?

  267. Well he says

  268. Psalm 119

    Psalms 119:28

  269. verse 28

  270. My soul

  271. is weary

  272. with sorrow

  273. strengthen me

  274. according to your

  275. word.

  276. Let me ask

  277. three more questions

  278. just to try and

  279. see what this

  280. actually means

  281. for us.

  282. So first question

  283. how?

  284. How do you

  285. get out of the

  286. first half?

  287. Answer

  288. it begins

  289. with prayer.

  290. Prayer is

  291. the 999

  292. call

  293. that connects

  294. him to

  295. the life

  296. support that

  297. God gives.

  298. He

  299. in the first

  300. half of the

  301. verse just

  302. is kind of

  303. describing his

  304. feelings

  305. but this

  306. second half

  307. of the verse

  308. is the

  309. desperation

  310. of his

  311. faith.

  312. When he's

  313. stuck

  314. he acknowledges

  315. that he

  316. has to

  317. look

  318. beyond

  319. himself

  320. for help.

  321. Now

  322. we're not

  323. good at

  324. this but

  325. we need

  326. to own

  327. this.

  328. When

  329. we need

  330. an answer

  331. the reason

  332. why I am

  333. often not

  334. the answer

  335. to my own

  336. problems

  337. is because

  338. I am

  339. the problem.

  340. Or

  341. sometimes

  342. the reason

  343. that I am

  344. not the

  345. answer to

  346. my problems

  347. is because

  348. my problem

  349. is way

  350. bigger than

  351. me.

  352. And if

  353. the sorrow

  354. is deep

  355. in our

  356. soul

  357. it is

  358. not enough

  359. to phone

  360. a doctor

  361. it is

  362. not enough

  363. to book

  364. a counsellor

  365. it is not

  366. enough to

  367. go to

  368. a dealer

  369. it is not

  370. enough to

  371. phone

  372. Just Eat

  373. you need

  374. to cry

  375. out to

  376. God.

  377. If your

  378. soul is

  379. created by

  380. God then

  381. your soul

  382. can only

  383. ever be

  384. cared for

  385. by God.

  386. The one

  387. who formed

  388. it must

  389. be the one

  390. who fills

  391. it.

  392. and what

  393. we are

  394. being

  395. modelled

  396. here

  397. from a

  398. sorrow

  399. wearied

  400. soul

  401. is that

  402. the way

  403. out of

  404. this first

  405. half of

  406. the verse

  407. the only

  408. way out of

  409. the first

  410. half of

  411. this verse

  412. is to

  413. cry out

  414. to the

  415. God of

  416. the

  417. universe.

  418. You look

  419. beyond

  420. yourself.

  421. Prayer

  422. the 999

  423. call of the

  424. weary soul

  425. to the

  426. living God.

  427. Okay,

  428. question

  429. two.

  430. What?

  431. What do

  432. you pray

  433. for when

  434. your soul

  435. is like

  436. this?

  437. Answer,

  438. he prays

  439. to God

  440. for

  441. strength.

  442. Now that

  443. is amazing

  444. because what

  445. does that

  446. tell you?

  447. You do

  448. not need

  449. to be

  450. strong to

  451. come to

  452. God.

  453. I think

  454. we often

  455. think that.

  456. I need

  457. to get

  458. my life

  459. together.

  460. I need

  461. to give

  462. the

  463. appearance

  464. that

  465. everything's

  466. okay.

  467. I need

  468. to stop

  469. crying.

  470. I need

  471. to have

  472. some kind

  473. of record

  474. of good.

  475. This

  476. verse

  477. says wrong.

  478. The shape

  479. of a

  480. relationship

  481. with God

  482. as it's

  483. pictured over

  484. and over

  485. again in

  486. the Bible

  487. is this.

  488. We bring

  489. our

  490. weaviness

  491. to him

  492. and he

  493. gives

  494. his

  495. strength.

  496. to us.

  497. See if

  498. you're not

  499. a Christian

  500. that's the

  501. shape of

  502. a relationship

  503. with God.

  504. It's how

  505. it starts

  506. and how

  507. it continues

  508. and how

  509. it ends.

  510. It starts

  511. by saying

  512. God I am

  513. weary in

  514. my sin

  515. and it's

  516. the only

  517. thing that

  518. I've got

  519. to offer

  520. to you.

  521. And we

  522. bring our

  523. sin to

  524. him and

  525. he gives

  526. a strong

  527. saviour

  528. to us.

  529. And if

  530. you're at

  531. that point

  532. where you're

  533. just

  534. overwhelmed

  535. with sorrow

  536. the one

  537. thing we

  538. want you

  539. to get

  540. out of

  541. this

  542. service

  543. today

  544. is God

  545. says you

  546. do not

  547. need to

  548. come to

  549. a place

  550. or position

  551. of strength

  552. to meet

  553. with me.

  554. You just

  555. bring your

  556. weary soul

  557. and you'll

  558. hear the

  559. Lord Jesus

  560. say come

  561. to me all

  562. you who

  563. are weary

  564. and heavy

  565. laden and

  566. I will

  567. give you

  568. rest.

  569. It's an

  570. amazing thing.

  571. You don't

  572. need to be

  573. strong.

  574. But it's

  575. also a

  576. surprising

  577. thing.

  578. Right?

  579. See if I

  580. was writing

  581. this,

  582. this is

  583. how I'd

  584. finish it.

  585. This would

  586. be the

  587. second half

  588. of my

  589. verse.

  590. God,

  591. my soul

  592. is weary

  593. with sorrow.

  594. Take my

  595. sorrow away.

  596. Would that

  597. not be what

  598. you'd pray?

  599. I want

  600. easy life

  601. and I want

  602. quick fix.

  603. God,

  604. remove the

  605. sorrow.

  606. Is that

  607. what he

  608. asked for?

  609. No,

  610. he doesn't

  611. ask for

  612. his soul's

  613. burden to

  614. get lighter.

  615. answer.

  616. He asks

  617. for his

  618. soul to

  619. get stronger.

  620. He's not

  621. asking to

  622. escape the

  623. sorrow, but

  624. he's asking

  625. for strength

  626. to endure

  627. the sorrow.

  628. See, we

  629. know the

  630. only way to

  631. escape this

  632. sorrow-filled

  633. world is to

  634. leave this

  635. world.

  636. And that

  637. is our

  638. hope as

  639. Christians,

  640. isn't it?

  641. That the

  642. resurrection of

  643. Jesus is

  644. the steadfast

  645. promise that

  646. for someone

  647. who trusts

  648. in him,

  649. the end

  650. of this

  651. life is

  652. the end

  653. of sorrow.

  654. And it

  655. is the

  656. beginning of

  657. forever

  658. rest.

  659. that is

  660. better by

  661. far.

  662. We can

  663. say,

  664. to die

  665. is gain.

  666. But until

  667. he saves

  668. us from

  669. that, we

  670. need strength

  671. for it.

  672. And that's

  673. what he

  674. promises.

  675. You just

  676. bring your

  677. soul

  678. williness

  679. to me,

  680. and I

  681. will give

  682. my strength.

  683. to you.

  684. So, final

  685. question.

  686. How?

  687. How will

  688. God strengthen

  689. us?

  690. My soul

  691. is weary

  692. with sorrow.

  693. Strengthen

  694. me, what

  695. does he

  696. say,

  697. according to

  698. your word.

  699. If prayer

  700. is the

  701. 999 call

  702. that cries

  703. out to

  704. God,

  705. God's

  706. word is

  707. the life

  708. support that

  709. God provides

  710. for weary

  711. souls.

  712. according to

  713. God's word,

  714. everything has

  715. its origin

  716. in God's

  717. word.

  718. If you remember

  719. the first

  720. pages of the

  721. Bible say,

  722. in the

  723. beginning,

  724. God

  725. said,

  726. let there

  727. be light,

  728. and there

  729. was light.

  730. Absolutely

  731. everything in

  732. this world

  733. owes its

  734. origin to

  735. the word

  736. of God.

  737. God's

  738. God's

  739. love.

  740. And all of a

  741. sudden,

  742. you just

  743. feel like

  744. it's weary

  745. and you're

  746. weary.

  747. What do you

  748. need?

  749. Plug

  750. yourself in.

  751. That's what

  752. we need.

  753. The Bible

  754. is life

  755. support for

  756. sorrow-filled

  757. souls.

  758. others.

  759. But it's not

  760. only that

  761. creation comes

  762. through God's

  763. word,

  764. and it's

  765. not just

  766. that God

  767. speaks to

  768. us in

  769. a book,

  770. which he

  771. does,

  772. but it's

  773. that he

  774. sent his

  775. son Jesus

  776. into this

  777. world as

  778. the word.

  779. That's what

  780. he's called.

  781. And I

  782. know when

  783. you are

  784. weary with

  785. sorrow,

  786. the Bible

  787. can feel

  788. like a

  789. clamp

  790. that is

  791. shut.

  792. And when

  793. your eyes

  794. are full

  795. of tears

  796. and when

  797. your whole

  798. existence

  799. feels like

  800. it's

  801. melting

  802. and life

  803. has leaked

  804. out of you,

  805. the hardest

  806. thing in the

  807. world sometimes

  808. is to open

  809. the Bible,

  810. isn't it?

  811. The good

  812. news on

  813. days like

  814. that is

  815. it's not

  816. just a

  817. book that

  818. you can

  819. come to,

  820. but the

  821. word of

  822. God is a

  823. person who

  824. has come

  825. to you.

  826. And if I

  827. do anything

  828. today,

  829. I want to

  830. make sure

  831. that you

  832. know and

  833. see and

  834. hear today

  835. that the

  836. word of

  837. God

  838. strengthens

  839. sorrowful

  840. souls and

  841. that comes

  842. through having

  843. a clear

  844. sight of

  845. your

  846. Savior,

  847. the Lord

  848. Jesus

  849. Christ,

  850. the

  851. word of

  852. God,

  853. strength for

  854. weary souls

  855. comes through

  856. a sight of

  857. Jesus the

  858. word.

  859. And I

  860. want you to

  861. see this

  862. word that

  863. weeps with

  864. you in

  865. your sorrow.

  866. Remember that

  867. moment when

  868. Jesus is at

  869. the gravesite

  870. of one of

  871. his good

  872. friends called

  873. Lazarus and

  874. we get a

  875. simple

  876. statement,

  877. Jesus

  878. wept.

  879. his eyes

  880. are leaking

  881. tears.

  882. His life

  883. is like

  884. it's

  885. melting

  886. away from

  887. him.

  888. And the

  889. beautiful

  890. thing about

  891. the closeness

  892. of Jesus,

  893. the word of

  894. God,

  895. is in that

  896. moment he

  897. is not just

  898. full of

  899. sorrow at

  900. death,

  901. but he is

  902. also there

  903. in sympathy

  904. with you.

  905. you need to

  906. see the

  907. strength comes

  908. by seeing

  909. this word

  910. weeping.

  911. But we

  912. need also

  913. to see,

  914. and I'm

  915. desperate for

  916. you to see,

  917. the word that

  918. then goes from

  919. weeping to

  920. willingly

  921. suffering for

  922. you.

  923. the night

  924. before Jesus

  925. was killed

  926. on a

  927. cross,

  928. he enters

  929. a garden

  930. called

  931. Gethsemane,

  932. and like

  933. the psalmist

  934. cries out in

  935. desperate

  936. faith,

  937. the Lord

  938. Jesus says,

  939. my soul

  940. is overwhelmed

  941. with sorrow

  942. to the point

  943. of death.

  944. Sound familiar?

  945. It's almost

  946. like he's

  947. speaking,

  948. Psalm 119

    Psalms 119:28

  949. verse 28,

  950. my soul

  951. is weary

  952. with sorrow.

  953. The eternal

  954. word of God

  955. that spoke

  956. creation

  957. into being

  958. enters the

  959. first half

  960. of this

  961. verse.

  962. He willingly

  963. takes on

  964. your sorrow,

  965. he willingly

  966. bears your

  967. burden,

  968. he is

  969. willingly

  970. taking upon

  971. himself

  972. the suffering

  973. and the

  974. sorrow

  975. and the

  976. sin

  977. that is

  978. mine.

  979. And he

  980. takes that

  981. burden the

  982. next day

  983. to a

  984. hill called

  985. Calvary

  986. where we

  987. are told

  988. he bows

  989. his head

  990. and breathes

  991. his last.

  992. The eternal

  993. word gives

  994. his life

  995. for you

  996. so that

  997. he can

  998. give life

  999. to you.

  1000. his strength

  1001. is gone

  1002. so that

  1003. he can

  1004. breathe

  1005. strength

  1006. into your

  1007. weary

  1008. soul.

  1009. And then

  1010. on the

  1011. third day

  1012. in what

  1013. is the

  1014. most

  1015. loud

  1016. communication

  1017. of

  1018. strength

  1019. God

  1020. to weary

  1021. people.

  1022. He rises

  1023. and do you

  1024. know the

  1025. word that

  1026. he speaks

  1027. almost more

  1028. often than

  1029. any other

  1030. word is?

  1031. He comes

  1032. to his

  1033. disciples and

  1034. he says

  1035. peace.

  1036. And in that

  1037. moment that

  1038. is not a

  1039. weak word.

  1040. That is a

  1041. word that

  1042. is strong

  1043. and it

  1044. is a

  1045. fighting

  1046. word that

  1047. says even

  1048. in the

  1049. moments where

  1050. your soul

  1051. is overwhelmed

  1052. with sorrow

  1053. even to the

  1054. point of

  1055. death

  1056. according to

  1057. the word of

  1058. God there

  1059. is peace

  1060. even now.

  1061. God.

  1062. And so I

  1063. want to

  1064. give you

  1065. this verse

  1066. as the

  1067. invitation of

  1068. God where

  1069. he comes to

  1070. you today

  1071. and says

  1072. you don't

  1073. need to be

  1074. strong.

  1075. You don't

  1076. need to

  1077. pretend.

  1078. You can

  1079. come exactly

  1080. as you

  1081. are and

  1082. my promise

  1083. to you

  1084. is that when

  1085. you bring

  1086. your weary

  1087. soul to

  1088. me my

  1089. word will

  1090. give you

  1091. strength.

  1092. And that's

  1093. what we've

  1094. been praying

  1095. for you

  1096. even just

  1097. in this

  1098. last week

  1099. from

  1100. Grace

  1101. Mount.

  1102. Shall I

  1103. pray?

  1104. Our

  1105. Father in

  1106. heaven

  1107. when our

  1108. souls are

  1109. weary

  1110. overwhelmed

  1111. with sorrow

  1112. please lift

  1113. our eyes

  1114. to see

  1115. your Son

  1116. the Word

  1117. of God

  1118. and in

  1119. seeing him

  1120. in hearing

  1121. him

  1122. may you

  1123. please

  1124. breathe

  1125. resurrection

  1126. strength

  1127. into our

  1128. sorrow

  1129. filled

  1130. souls.

  1131. And we

  1132. pray these

  1133. things in

  1134. the only

  1135. way we

  1136. can.

  1137. In

  1138. Jesus'

  1139. name.

  1140. Amen.
