  1. It's great. What a wonderful morning. And we do give thanks to God and give him all the praise

  2. and the glory for how he is at work in people's lives. Here's what I'd love you to do. I'd love

  3. you to come to the book of Genesis. This is the very first book in the Bible. And we are

  4. starting a new series this morning in this first book of the Bible, looking at this man

  5. called Jacob. This is going to take us through the summer. And here's why this is exciting this

  6. morning. It's exciting as we begin this because this story explains Delia's story.

  7. As we get to know this man called Jacob. And this has been my prayer over this last number

  8. of weeks as we've been thinking about this new summer series. My prayer is that it would

  9. remind us of who the God of the Bible is and how he works, what he does, what he's in the

  10. business of. Because what we fundamentally believe as Christians about the God of the

  11. Bible is that he loves to speak hope into the most hopeless of situations. Now with that

  12. in mind, let me tell you about my friend Trevor, right? He's one of my new best friends. He and

  13. his wife Val, they live down in London. Trevor serves as the London director of the FIEC, the

  14. Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches, working to see churches planted all over our country

  15. for the glory of Jesus. Alex and I met them, him and his wife, on a beach in Jersey. And we had lunch

  16. with them. And he starts telling us about how he came to know Jesus. And a more messy and complicated

  17. family situation you could not imagine. So his mum moves from Aberystwyth in Wales to the bustle and

  18. grime of East End London. The year is 1918. Why that's significant is that she goes there to London

  19. to try and make a living as a housemaid during the war. And she goes there at the age of 16.

  20. So she leaves the little farming village where she's from. She moves to the East End of London.

  21. And long story short, Trevor is the youngest of three. He has two older sisters.

  22. And the three of them have three different biological fathers. His dad is now the stepdad of the family.

  23. The family, one sister ends up in foster care when she was growing up. The other one

  24. is at some point evacuated during the war. And so Trevor grows up in a home that is full of secrets,

  25. that is packed with heartache, that's riddled with shame, and is full of mess. And a more complicated

  26. family situation you could not imagine. But the one thing that Trevor loves in his life as a little

  27. boy is he loves football. And he hears about the church down the roads who are running a summer

  28. football camp. And quite frankly, if it's got the word football in it, he's there. And he goes,

  29. and he hears about Jesus for the first time. And after a bit of time in the workplace,

  30. he becomes a Christian. And God calls him after a little bit of time in the church to go to Bible

  31. college. And after a while, he later becomes the pastor of the church when he first heard about

  32. Jesus. And so over a burger and a chips, as we're thinking about his story, here's what he says.

  33. He says, my life is testimony to the truth that God's grace is bigger and greater than our mess.

  34. And that's the kind of God that we're dealing with as we come to the pages of the Bible. A God

  35. whose grace is greater than our mess. And maybe this is where this is going to hit for many of us

  36. today. You might be sitting here right now. And all you can think about is about mistakes that are

  37. behind you. And all you're aware of right now is mess around you. And all you can think about and see

  38. ahead of you are dead ends. And if truth be told, it feels like you are sinking in the bog.

  39. And that line that you two sang way back in the day is so fixed in your mind. You've got

  40. yourself stuck in a moment and you can't get out of it. It's often what shame and guilt feel like,

  41. isn't it, in our lives. It feels like you're sitting on a bus and you're heading in the wrong

  42. direction. And with every passing stop that goes by, it just gets easier to keep sitting. And it just

  43. feels impossible to get up and press the button to stop.

  44. And if that's you here this morning, you need this.

  45. Let God, through his word, as we see this man, Jacob, and all the mess that surrounds his life.

  46. I mean, the state of this family, as we travel with it over the weeks, this would be something

  47. that today would leave Jerry McHale and Oprah scratching their heads thinking, how on earth do

  48. we fix something like this? This is messy. But let this story about how God is at work in this family's

  49. life, lead you to see what he has done for you, to save you from your mess, to lift us out of the

  50. bog so that we can get off the bus and we can cross the road and we can get on the bus marked to grace,

  51. which is heading in the other direction. This is what repentance means in the Bible,

  52. to stop going your way, to turn and to start going God's way.

  53. So here's what my thinking has been this week, as we turn to Genesis.

  54. Why did Moses, the author here, why did, as he writes this, give us so many details?

  55. Right? He could have saved himself a lot of time and just given us the biblical family tree,

  56. could he not have? Genesis would have been a much shorter book if he had.

  57. He wants us to see Jacob and his family, warts and all.

  58. Yeah? And so we view this as the readers, not like we would watch a play. This is much more like

  59. looking in a mirror. This is not for us to look back and laugh at their misfortune. No,

  60. this is so we can see ourselves in their folly and see that Jesus is our only hope.

  61. So we're going to read this together now in at verse 19 of chapter 25.

  62. And as we do this, here's a little challenge for you.

  63. Verse 19, chapter 25.

  64. Here's the challenge. See how many mistakes you can spot.

  65. Right?

  66. See how much mess is in this picture. See if you can count them on your fingers.

  67. It's like a game show, isn't it, as we read it through.

  68. See how many mistakes you can spot.

  69. Here's the story.

  70. This is the account of the family line of Abraham's son Isaac.

  71. Abraham became the father of Isaac and Isaac was 40 years old when he married Rebecca,

  72. daughter of Bethuel the Aramean, from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.

  73. Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife because she was childless.

  74. The Lord answered his prayer and his wife Rebecca became pregnant.

  75. Verse 22.

  76. The babies jostled each other within her and she said,

  77. why is this happening to me?

  78. So she went to inquire of the Lord.

  79. The Lord said to her,

  80. two nations are in your womb and two peoples from within you will be separated.

  81. One people will be stronger than the other and the older will serve the younger.

  82. When the time came for her to give birth, they were twin boys in her womb.

  83. The first to come out was red and his whole body was like a hairy garment.

  84. So they named him Esau.

  85. After this, his brother came out with his hand grasping Esau's heel.

  86. So he was named Jacob.

  87. Isaac was 60 years old when Rebecca gave birth to them.

  88. The boys grew up and Esau became a skillful hunter,

  89. a man of the open country,

  90. while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents.

  91. Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau.

  92. But Rebecca loved Jacob.

  93. Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,

  94. Esau came in from the open country famished.

  95. He said to Jacob,

  96. quick, let me have some of that red stew.

  97. I'm famished.

  98. That is why he was also called Edom.

  99. Jacob replied,

  100. first,

  101. sell me your birthright.

  102. Look, I'm about to die.

  103. Esau said,

  104. what good is the birthright to me?

  105. But Jacob said,

  106. swear to me first.

  107. So he swore an oath to him,

  108. selling his birthright to Jacob.

  109. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew.

  110. He ate and drank and then got up and left.

  111. So Esau despised his birthright.

  112. And this is God's word to us this morning.

  113. Now, if we were to channel our inner teacher

  114. and mark the mistakes on this,

  115. I think you would have one or two blue ticks

  116. and you would have a whole lot of red.

  117. Yeah?

  118. But here's the big thing I think Moses is saying to this generation

  119. as it comes to them and as it comes to us today,

  120. even these mistakes,

  121. even these wrongdoings

  122. will not stop the grace of God.

  123. So here's three of them today.

  124. We'll rattle through these.

  125. But here's three things I want us to know

  126. won't stop the grace of God.

  127. Here's the first one that won't stop it.

  128. Life being full of questions.

  129. So the question facing Isaac and Rebecca is,

  130. why can't we have a child?

  131. And I get that for many of us here today,

  132. that is a pain that either we will know

  133. or we know others will know.

  134. That sense of sadness and disappointment,

  135. the kind I've heard Christopher Ashe,

  136. who's a former pastor down in Oxford,

  137. describe it as like grieving without an object.

  138. And I get that it's hard watching others rejoice

  139. in the birth of babies.

  140. And we'd love to walk and talk with you in that

  141. and pray for you in that

  142. as we seek to be a church that walks with one another

  143. through the ups and the downs of life.

  144. But the added pain for Isaac and Rebecca

  145. is the fact that God had promised Isaac's father,

  146. Abraham, that through their family line

  147. would come one who was both the serpent crusher

  148. of Genesis 3, who was going to defeat evil in the world,

  149. and he was going to be the one who would bring blessing

  150. to the nations.

  151. And so they're looking at this thinking,

  152. where is that child that God has promised us?

  153. Has God failed at generation two of that promise?

  154. And so this is really painful for them in this moment.

  155. Do you not love that the Bible doesn't shy away

  156. from that kind of pain

  157. and those kind of questions?

  158. So glad for that.

  159. It's almost God's invitation to say to us,

  160. you can come to me with these things.

  161. Here's what I think we can learn from Isaac and Rebecca.

  162. Where do they go with their pain and their questions?

  163. They do not go away from God,

  164. but they go to God in prayer.

  165. Because the salvation story of the Bible

  166. is that God does his best work

  167. when human beings are all out of options.

  168. And Isaac would know that his parents,

  169. Abraham and Sarah,

  170. they couldn't have a child either.

  171. They went through the exact same thing.

  172. Isaac is the miracle child in Genesis.

  173. They know that they have a God big enough

  174. to deal with their pain.

  175. They know that they have a God with a track record

  176. of coming through on his promises.

  177. They know that they have a God who loves them enough

  178. and invites them to come to him with their questions

  179. and not to run away from him in the pain.

  180. You know, I remember hearing a man called Paul Mallard

  181. speak a number of years ago down south

  182. and he was talking about how he and his wife, Edry,

  183. how they process everything

  184. when she was diagnosed

  185. with a neurological degenerative disease.

  186. And he writes about it in his book called

  187. Invest Your Suffering.

  188. And I just want to read you this one quote

  189. and the whole quote's on the screen.

  190. I just want you to read the last bit to you.

  191. Here's what he writes.

  192. And this is a book well worth checking out

  193. if that's a question in your mind.

  194. He says,

  195. But one thing I've never doubted

  196. is that in the darkest circumstances,

  197. we were only ever in the hands of God.

  198. that has been the ultimate source of comfort and hope.

  199. And that's what we see here, isn't it?

  200. In these times when we're up against it,

  201. in these times where we feel stretched,

  202. let's pray and help one another

  203. and pray that our faith would be like an elastic band

  204. that would bring us back into God and the gospel.

  205. is God draws us to himself.

  206. See, Isaac, verse 20, what is he doing?

  207. He prayed to the Lord for his wife.

  208. And even after she becomes pregnant,

  209. Rebecca, do you see how she does the same?

  210. Verse 22, she inquires of the Lord.

  211. So even when life is full of questions,

  212. this won't stop his grace.

  213. And the other thing,

  214. the second thing that won't stop it

  215. is when families feel full of tensions.

  216. Right?

  217. Rebecca here, do you see how she gets the news

  218. that she's having twins?

  219. And not long after that has sunk in,

  220. the Lord tells her, verse 20,

  221. that these two boys are going to represent two nations

  222. who are going to have two different attitudes to God.

  223. And Esau comes out all red.

  224. Love that.

  225. Jacob comes out clinging to his heel.

  226. Now you add those details together

  227. and you begin to see that there's something going on here

  228. with the birth of these two boys.

  229. Now, two things I want us to notice here in the text.

  230. Firstly, notice the description of the boys.

  231. Do you see verse 27?

  232. Esau's a hunter.

  233. While Jacob was a quiet man living in tents.

  234. Now, I take it Moses is showing us that there

  235. to explain the verse that's come before.

  236. So we're in no doubt who is the physically stronger,

  237. who's the weaker.

  238. But I take it as well,

  239. he just wants it to show us

  240. that these boys couldn't be any more different.

  241. And yet, they're both boys.

  242. I think it's so important for us to see

  243. how the Bible views that.

  244. Because we live in a culture where today

  245. we'd be tempted to ask questions

  246. as we look at their character, wouldn't we?

  247. So Esau, when we see him, he's a man's man.

  248. He's like Jack Grealish in Bear Grylls,

  249. kind of rolled into one.

  250. Classic lad.

  251. Classic lad behavior.

  252. But Jacob?

  253. Not so sure.

  254. And this is where we want to be very clear

  255. and loving that we want to go baby in bathwater

  256. as we seek to lovingly dialogue

  257. and live distinctly in our culture right now.

  258. The bathwater is that we want to rightly question

  259. the helpfulness of cultural gender stereotypes.

  260. And we want to repent of the times

  261. that we've got that wrong as a church.

  262. Right?

  263. Not all boys need to love sport and wear blue.

  264. Not all girls need to love Barbies and wear pink.

  265. But the baby is just because

  266. your character, you like or dislike certain things,

  267. doesn't make you any less or any more

  268. of a man or a woman by God's good design.

  269. And so in love and desiring to foster

  270. the kind of community where we can walk

  271. with one another through these things

  272. and can create a safe place for us to share honestly

  273. our experiences and our struggles,

  274. let me just say that our genders are both

  275. wonderfully God-designed and assigned to us.

  276. And that is why Moses here, we've got to see,

  277. he makes no comment on that.

  278. Right?

  279. And if that's the defense, if you like,

  280. that we have as Christian believers,

  281. the Bible also gives us an offense.

  282. To be a man, I'm just picking men

  283. because we're dealing with boys here,

  284. to be a man according to the Bible

  285. is to be like Christ.

  286. Christ.

  287. And when you start defining it like that,

  288. all of a sudden the words to describe

  289. our characters should be words like

  290. gentle and humble and sacrificial

  291. and loving and serving

  292. because it's into Christ's image

  293. that we're being made.

  294. Okay?

  295. Talking about guys,

  296. it's the same for our dear sisters as well.

  297. Okay?

  298. Guys have to get used to being the bride of Christ

  299. so you can deal with the fact

  300. that you're being made into Christ's image.

  301. Okay?

  302. That's what it is.

  303. I've got a friend, Class.

  304. I went around to see them recently.

  305. Class was telling me about how he's going through

  306. so many pairs of jeans as a parent.

  307. Do you know why?

  308. Because he spends all his time

  309. on his knees.

  310. Changing nappies.

  311. Wiping away tears.

  312. Sweeping up shreddies off the floor.

  313. Tons of holes in his jeans.

  314. Just taking that position of just serving his family.

  315. Guys, I take it that we should be people

  316. in life who've got tons of holes in our jeans.

  317. Yeah?

  318. As we seek after the Lord,

  319. desire more of his character in our lives.

  320. It's into his image that God is making us.

  321. See the parents' behavior here too.

  322. How they don't cover themselves in glory.

  323. You know, watching Isaac and Rebecca here

  324. made me think of that joke

  325. that they always make on airplanes

  326. at the safety demonstration.

  327. Parents, fit your own masks first

  328. before turning to fit that of your child.

  329. If you've got more than one child,

  330. you have to pick your favorite.

  331. And we would be in no doubt here

  332. as to who is Isaac and Rebecca's favorite child,

  333. would we?

  334. We'd be in no doubt as to that.

  335. Isaac, Moses tells us,

  336. Isaac loves, do you see it?

  337. Isaac loves Esau.

  338. Rebecca loved Jacob.

  339. How that must have messed

  340. with the minds of these boys

  341. as they grew up.

  342. Not to mention the tension

  343. that it must have brought

  344. on their marriage.

  345. I told you this family was a mess.

  346. We're only 10 verses in.

  347. Again, Moses makes no comment

  348. except to hold this up as a mirror

  349. and say how unwise,

  350. how foolish to pick your favorite.

  351. And that's true.

  352. But I think the challenge here,

  353. particularly to parents,

  354. is not just don't pick your favorite,

  355. but that's true,

  356. is what is going on in your heart

  357. as a parent

  358. that these guys even got to that place.

  359. Yeah, what are they projecting

  360. onto their kids?

  361. Something of their own aspirations?

  362. We don't know it.

  363. But how do you end up

  364. as a parent in this place?

  365. That's the question I think

  366. that we're meant to ask here.

  367. Yeah, I love that,

  368. that the Bible doesn't just deal

  369. with the surface things.

  370. The Bible, God calls us

  371. to examine our hearts

  372. for hidden motives.

  373. What's going on in our hearts?

  374. So parents,

  375. what do we long for

  376. for our kids?

  377. Yeah?

  378. If we had to make a list

  379. of the things

  380. that we want to be true

  381. for them in the future

  382. as they grow up,

  383. what is number one

  384. on that list?

  385. If you were to ask them

  386. this morning,

  387. what is it that most excites mum?

  388. What is it that brings

  389. greatest joy to dad?

  390. What would they say?

  391. And I think this is where

  392. I have been so encouraged

  393. by Delia's story.

  394. And I think this is what connects

  395. the story of the life

  396. of our dear friend Lynn

  397. that we heard yesterday

  398. and connects what Delia said

  399. about her mum.

  400. That there was no doubt

  401. in our minds

  402. what was the most important thing

  403. in their lives

  404. as they lived it out

  405. in front of their kids.

  406. Delia's story

  407. is how God answered

  408. that prayer

  409. of the greatest desire

  410. of her mum.

  411. And can I just say,

  412. if you want to think

  413. about this a bit more,

  414. here's a book giveaway

  415. this morning.

  416. Five of these books

  417. written by a guy

  418. called Kevin DeYoung.

  419. I don't know why

  420. they've got different covers,

  421. they just do.

  422. Same book.

  423. It's just called

  424. Amaze Them With God.

  425. And it's his summons

  426. as a parent of,

  427. I think they've got

  428. eight or nine kids,

  429. to live out

  430. an infectious affection

  431. for Jesus

  432. in front of your children.

  433. If you want one of these,

  434. we've got five of them,

  435. just come and take it

  436. after the service.

  437. It's only 60 or so pages,

  438. you'll get through it

  439. in an afternoon.

  440. But a brilliant summons

  441. to parents

  442. to live out a love

  443. for Jesus

  444. in front of our kids.

  445. You see,

  446. when families

  447. are full of tensions,

  448. Moses is saying,

  449. still this won't stop

  450. God's grace.

  451. And thirdly,

  452. when people make

  453. foolish decisions,

  454. this won't stop

  455. God's grace.

  456. This rivalry,

  457. you see,

  458. it develops

  459. between these boys.

  460. We get this scene.

  461. Esau comes in

  462. exhausted from the field.

  463. He's clearly

  464. a felt needs

  465. kind of guy.

  466. He's famished.

  467. All he can think about

  468. is his stomach.

  469. And how timely

  470. that Jacob's in the kitchen

  471. having been cooking

  472. up a stew.

  473. But Jacob has been

  474. cooking up more than that

  475. in his mind.

  476. Do you see that?

  477. He's been cooking up

  478. a plan.

  479. You see,

  480. there's folly

  481. in Esau

  482. doing anything

  483. to get a quick feed,

  484. even if it means

  485. selling his birthright

  486. as the firstborn son.

  487. The privileges,

  488. the greater share,

  489. the responsibility

  490. that goes with that.

  491. But equally,

  492. there's envy

  493. a play

  494. in Jacob's heart.

  495. And again,

  496. the invitation

  497. is from our father

  498. to say,

  499. do you see this

  500. in your heart?

  501. Do you see envy?

  502. Do you see jealousy?

  503. Do you struggle

  504. when others

  505. get good news?

  506. Do you rejoice

  507. when others

  508. get good news?

  509. Do you struggle

  510. to empathize

  511. when others

  512. get bad news?

  513. What is going on

  514. in our hearts today

  515. as a church family?

  516. And you have to say

  517. when Jacob makes

  518. his play here

  519. and says,

  520. sell me your birthright,

  521. you've got to ask

  522. where on earth

  523. did that come from?

  524. Right?

  525. I don't think

  526. we're meant to read this

  527. and think that Jacob

  528. is the opportunist

  529. par excellence.

  530. Just saw a chance

  531. and went for it.

  532. I think we're meant

  533. to understand

  534. that this has been

  535. brewing in his heart

  536. for years.

  537. Years.

  538. Just waiting

  539. for that opportunity

  540. to pounce

  541. because if he can't

  542. beat his brother

  543. by bronze,

  544. he can beat him

  545. with brains.

  546. Red pen

  547. all over this.

  548. Right?

  549. And Esau

  550. is all too willing

  551. to take the hook,

  552. take the bait

  553. when Jacob plays it

  554. in front of him.

  555. Right?

  556. The New Testament

  557. is it picks up on this

  558. in Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  559. We talk about how

  560. Esau despised

  561. his birthright.

  562. In other words,

  563. it meant nothing to him.

  564. It's like a used bus ticket

  565. just out the window

  566. that goes.

  567. It meant nothing to him

  568. being the firstborn.

  569. Take it once,

  570. nothing to do with God.

  571. Not really cared

  572. for anything other

  573. than his felt needs.

  574. And here's,

  575. I think,

  576. the challenge

  577. as we look at this guy.

  578. In this moment,

  579. his wants

  580. trump

  581. God's word.

  582. God's word.

  583. His desire

  584. to fulfill

  585. his pleasures

  586. trumps

  587. God's

  588. promises.

  589. And so,

  590. you've got

  591. two different brothers

  592. with two different

  593. longings

  594. manifesting themselves

  595. in two different ways

  596. and yet you see

  597. how we've got

  598. exactly the same

  599. heart problem.

  600. And there is mess

  601. everywhere in this family

  602. and it is only

  603. going to get

  604. messier.

  605. Do you identify

  606. with that this morning?

  607. So hard,

  608. isn't it,

  609. as we think about

  610. the,

  611. oh man,

  612. the mistakes

  613. that we have made

  614. in the past,

  615. all of us,

  616. the words that we've said

  617. that we can't take back,

  618. the attitudes

  619. that were going on

  620. in our hearts

  621. that we thought

  622. were okay,

  623. now we look back

  624. and we shudder.

  625. Oh man,

  626. where would we be

  627. if it weren't

  628. for the grace of God?

  629. But maybe that is you

  630. precisely today.

  631. All you can think about

  632. is mistakes behind you.

  633. All you're aware of

  634. is mess around you.

  635. All you're aware of

  636. is dead ends

  637. ahead of you.

  638. But we need to understand

  639. that the hope

  640. for messy people

  641. is not what's going on

  642. on the ground.

  643. This throws us

  644. to think about

  645. what's going on above.

  646. What is God up to

  647. in our mess?

  648. If we believe

  649. that he is bigger,

  650. if his grace

  651. is bigger than our mess,

  652. then what is he up to?

  653. Our only hope

  654. is the God

  655. who is in control

  656. and who loves us

  657. and who is above.

  658. You see,

  659. here's my friend Trevor

  660. again as we begin

  661. to wind this up.

  662. Trevor's 70 now.

  663. Trevor's writing

  664. his story down

  665. so that he can pass it

  666. on to future generations.

  667. And he sent me

  668. a copy this week.

  669. And he says,

  670. looking back

  671. on his life

  672. and what life

  673. has taught him

  674. about God,

  675. he says this.

  676. He says,

  677. I've come to understand

  678. life like a tapestry.

  679. You look at a tapestry

  680. from underneath

  681. and all you can see

  682. is loose threads.

  683. All you can see

  684. is frays.

  685. All you can see

  686. is knots.

  687. You can't see

  688. any discernible pattern.

  689. You can't understand

  690. the logic.

  691. But that same tapestry

  692. viewed from above,

  693. that picture's

  694. wonderful.

  695. And I think

  696. this is what's going to,

  697. and if all we do

  698. with this series

  699. over the summer

  700. is get bogged down

  701. in the character details,

  702. and they are important,

  703. we're going to miss

  704. the whole purpose

  705. of this book.

  706. Because the whole point

  707. is how God

  708. is bringing

  709. to pass

  710. his promise

  711. to bring forth

  712. a saviour

  713. from the line

  714. of his people,

  715. despite all the reasons

  716. that should have

  717. put him off.

  718. This is the story

  719. about God's

  720. relentless grace

  721. getting to people

  722. like us

  723. who desperately need it,

  724. of God's

  725. unrelenting mercy,

  726. of his unfailing

  727. purposes,

  728. in blessing

  729. the world

  730. with Jesus.

  731. Because years later,

  732. the Bible

  733. is going to introduce

  734. us to another

  735. firstborn son.

  736. From the line

  737. of Jacob,

  738. born into

  739. our mess,

  740. a man who

  741. wouldn't despise

  742. his responsibilities,

  743. a man who

  744. would step

  745. up to the

  746. plate,

  747. and a man

  748. who would do

  749. what Esau

  750. didn't do,

  751. and what you

  752. and I

  753. in and of

  754. ourselves

  755. can't do,

  756. and that's put,

  757. and love the fact

  758. that God's word

  759. trumps

  760. our wants.

  761. And he would

  762. come and do

  763. what Jacob

  764. couldn't do,

  765. and what you

  766. and I

  767. can't do

  768. in and of

  769. ourselves,

  770. and have

  771. that pure

  772. heart of

  773. worship to

  774. his God.

  775. Jesus took

  776. responsibility for

  777. my mess,

  778. and your

  779. mess.

  780. As he died

  781. for us on the

  782. cross, he paid

  783. the price for

  784. our sin.

  785. He's paid for

  786. all of it.

  787. He has paid

  788. for all of it.

  789. He has washed

  790. us clean, and

  791. because he's

  792. done that,

  793. he offers to

  794. redeem us

  795. out of our

  796. mess and the

  797. consequences that

  798. our sin

  799. deserves.

  800. Standing above

  801. all of this,

  802. and really this is

  803. what the developing

  804. story here is all

  805. about, is God's

  806. delightful

  807. determination,

  808. and his

  809. relentless mercy,

  810. and in his

  811. loving desire

  812. to get

  813. us

  814. Jesus.

  815. And I love

  816. the words of

  817. John Newton,

  818. and with this

  819. we close.

  820. John Newton,

  821. former slave

  822. trader, worked

  823. on the

  824. ships, turned

  825. minister, who

  826. penned that

  827. words of that

  828. first song that

  829. we sang called

  830. Amazing Grace,

  831. and he sits

  832. down at the

  833. end of his

  834. life, and

  835. what has life

  836. taught him,

  837. and he says

  838. this,

  839. although my

  840. memory's

  841. fading, I

  842. remember two

  843. things very

  844. clearly, that

  845. I am a

  846. great sinner,

  847. and Christ

  848. is a great

  849. savior.

  850. And that's

  851. what this

  852. morning is

  853. about, dear

  854. friends.

  855. It's about

  856. who he is

  857. today, and

  858. his love for

  859. us, and

  860. his commitment

  861. to us, and

  862. like we said

  863. at the start,

  864. who he is, he

  865. is the great

  866. shepherd, and

  867. the great

  868. overseer of

  869. our souls.

  870. Let's pray,

  871. will we?

  872. And so

  873. Father, we

  874. thank you so

  875. much this

  876. morning, dear

  877. God, for

  878. who you are.

  879. Thank you for

  880. Jesus that he

  881. stepped into

  882. our mess.

  883. He didn't

  884. shout from

  885. above, he

  886. didn't tell us

  887. to work harder,

  888. no, he

  889. entered our

  890. world, and

  891. he took

  892. responsibility

  893. for our

  894. failures.

  895. And as he

  896. stands, having

  897. defeated them

  898. on the cross, and

  899. as he stands in

  900. that place of

  901. victory, thank

  902. you that we

  903. have life in

  904. him.

  905. And so,

  906. Father, at the

  907. end of this

  908. morning, we

  909. would want to

  910. just give you

  911. all the praise

  912. and the glory.

  913. Lord, would

  914. your spirit be

  915. at work in

  916. our lives?

  917. Maybe we've

  918. never thought

  919. about this

  920. stuff before.

  921. May you

  922. prompt us to

  923. think about the

  924. things of

  925. Jesus.

  926. Father, for

  927. those who are

  928. struggling, may

  929. this word come

  930. as a great

  931. source of

  932. comfort.

  933. And Father, for

  934. those of us who

  935. need challenged,

  936. Lord, may this

  937. spur us on to

  938. live our lives

  939. to the praise of

  940. his name.

  941. And we pray

  942. these things in

  943. his worthy name.

  944. Amen.

  945. Amen.
