  1. Okay, well, morning folks. It is lovely to see you. My name is Graham. I'm the pastor here of the church.

  2. Now, I get that it's hot, says the guy in the jumper, but this is really worth our best time and concentration today.

  3. This is an incredible passage if we've got the eyes of faith to tune in and see what it's saying to us.

  4. So let me encourage you to come expectantly to Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  5. You can grab a Bible round about you or your own, or you can scroll on your phone.

  6. But so important that we have God's word open in front of us, Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  7. And so with that in mind, let me try and get us into both the challenge and the comfort that God is going to hold out to us today in his word.

  8. Now, here is British tennis player Emma Raducanu.

  9. Now, back in 2021, she became a household name when she won the US Open as an 18-year-old rookie.

  10. And if you've followed her career since then, you'll know that she's kind of struggled both mentally and physically with the demands of the game of tennis.

  11. And so she said this in an interview with BBC Sport this week.

  12. If anybody read it, I thought it was a fascinating insight into the personality of a sports person.

  13. She said this.

  14. She said, I very much attach my self-worth to my achievements.

  15. If I lost a match, I would be really down.

  16. I would have a day of mourning, literally staring at the wall.

  17. I feel things so passionately and intensely.

  18. Now, on the one hand, part of me kind of loves that drive in her.

  19. But on the other hand, I may be saying this as a father, I really feel for her.

  20. Because no 18-year-old, or she's now, what, 20, should live with that kind of outrageous burden and pressure on their lives, right?

  21. Let alone in life, as opposed to the game of sport.

  22. Now, I take it, though, when she uses that phrase in yellow there, she says,

  23. It's my self-worth.

  24. I take it short for the thing that she perceives that gives her life meaning and purpose.

  25. Okay?

  26. It's kind of one of the buzz phrases of our day, our self-worth.

  27. And for her, that thing is winning.

  28. Which you have to say is fine when you're winning.

  29. But what happens when you don't win?

  30. I've got a friend called Andy.

  31. In fact, Andy was preaching here a couple of weeks ago.

  32. Andy's the chaplain at Hearts Football Club down in Gorgate.

  33. I remember hearing him say, not so long ago, that in his role as the chaplain of that football club,

  34. none of the boys want to talk about the big things in life when things are going well, right?

  35. When things, when they're winning, when they're performing well,

  36. nobody's thinking about the existential questions of life.

  37. But all it takes is for the team to start losing,

  38. and for contracts to be up for discussion,

  39. and for injuries to set in,

  40. and all of a sudden the questions come flying out.

  41. So let me ask you, with that in mind,

  42. where does this morning, where does your sense of self-worth come from?

  43. You see, here is the stunningly unique thing

  44. that the Christian faith has to say into our world today,

  45. that's the polar opposite of what you'll hear every single day

  46. as you live your life in this world,

  47. when it comes to the whole issue of identity and worth.

  48. The Christian faith, the Bible consistently says

  49. that in order to understand ourselves,

  50. we need to first begin by looking away from ourselves,

  51. and to the God who made us,

  52. and who created our hearts

  53. to be eternally satisfied in knowing him.

  54. And so here is where,

  55. if you wondered where on earth we're going with this this morning,

  56. here is where Emma Raducanu connects with Genesis 26.

  57. See, the first readers of Genesis,

  58. and this is what we've got to understand,

  59. as Moses writes this book of Genesis,

  60. the first readers of this first book of the Bible

  61. are the generation who are wandering in the wilderness.

  62. Right?

  63. The Israelites, the people who God has rescued from Egypt.

  64. Right?

  65. Remember that story,

  66. Let My People Go,

  67. that famous line?

  68. I was going to say that Will Smith made famous

  69. in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,

  70. if you know that scene.

  71. Yeah?

  72. Let My People Go.

  73. They're out of Egypt.

  74. They're now journeying towards the promised land,

  75. the land where God said he was taking them.

  76. So these guys are the first readers of Genesis.

  77. Now that's critical for understanding the book as a whole,

  78. and it's crucial for understanding the message of chapter 26,

  79. because as that generation journey to where God has taken them,

  80. right,

  81. they have got all sorts of questions,

  82. spoken and unspoken in their minds.

  83. Who is the Lord?

  84. Is he good for his word?

  85. Can we trust him?

  86. Or actually,

  87. is he just a bogus salesman

  88. whose words aren't worth the bit of paper

  89. that they're written on?

  90. How do we know that we're not staking all of it

  91. on an old wife's tale?

  92. Right?

  93. Always love it.

  94. Is atheist Richard Dawkins right?

  95. Is Christianity just a fairy tale for those afraid of the dark?

  96. Always love how Christian professor John Lennox

  97. responded to that claim in a moment with a bit of love

  98. and a bit of humor when he said,

  99. actually,

  100. you think Christianity is a fairy tale for those afraid of the dark?

  101. Can I just say,

  102. atheism is a fairy tale for those afraid of the light?

  103. It's what we do with the truth,

  104. isn't it?

  105. Like a beach ball,

  106. the Bible says,

  107. we suppress it.

  108. We hold it underneath.

  109. We don't really want to think about truth

  110. and the claims it has on our lives.

  111. You see,

  112. they're wondering,

  113. asking,

  114. who are we?

  115. Where are we?

  116. Where are we going?

  117. And you understand that those are not just postmodern questions.

  118. Right?

  119. Human beings have been asking them ever since we were created.

  120. And this chapter is meant to give them,

  121. and it's meant to give us,

  122. a big piece of that puzzle.

  123. Kind of reminded me this week,

  124. if you remember that game show catchphrase.

  125. Yeah?

  126. They always had that scene at the end

  127. where the big thing was you had to kind of guess the picture

  128. that was behind the puzzle pieces.

  129. And you just got that music,

  130. didn't you?

  131. Do-do-do-do-do-do-do.

  132. Vump.

  133. And you saw a big piece of the puzzle reveal the picture.

  134. Now,

  135. that's exactly what's going on in chapter 26.

  136. Have a look at the text with me,

  137. and this will become clear, I hope.

  138. You see,

  139. the bookends are the clue to the purpose of this chapter.

  140. So,

  141. if you scan your eye in the text,

  142. over verses 3 and 5,

  143. and then again,

  144. you kind of get the repetition of it at verse 24,

  145. it's all about promises.

  146. It's all about what God is promising to do and to be,

  147. for this man called Isaac.

  148. As God affirms the promises that he made to Isaac's father,

  149. Abraham,

  150. and as they get passed down this family line.

  151. There are four Ps,

  152. if you want to think about it like this.

  153. Four Ps underlined on the screen.

  154. They are promises of his presence.

  155. Okay?

  156. God is saying,

  157. that's what he says there.

  158. That's the,

  159. I will be with you language.

  160. God is saying,

  161. my presence,

  162. and a people.

  163. That's the,

  164. I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the heaven language,

  165. and a place.

  166. I will give you these lands.

  167. Right?

  168. Isaac,

  169. as he hears this,

  170. I think is probably at the southwest corner of this bit of geography called Canaan,

  171. which is the promised land where God is leading his people,

  172. which as we'll see,

  173. is pointed to something far greater.

  174. And,

  175. slightly stretching it a little bit,

  176. it's a program.

  177. Through your line will come one through whom I will bless the peoples of the world.

  178. Now,

  179. what's strange here in terms of timeline,

  180. is that chapter 26 likely comes before chapter 25 chronologically.

  181. Okay?

  182. So,

  183. before these two boys,

  184. Esau and Jacob are on the scene.

  185. So,

  186. you kind of think about it like this.

  187. This is like when a character in a film has a flashback,

  188. to a key moment in the past,

  189. which kind of explains the present.

  190. It's kind of what's going on here in this chapter.

  191. Because,

  192. in the present,

  193. do you remember what we saw last week?

  194. Are the last words of chapter 25.

  195. Look at it there.

  196. The very last phrase.

  197. What did Esau do?

  198. He despised his birthright.

  199. Yeah?

  200. So,

  201. being the firstborn

  202. meant nothing to him.

  203. This was a bit like when

  204. a bit of junk mail comes through your letterbox.

  205. You take one,

  206. look at it,

  207. scrumple it up,

  208. and throw it in the bin.

  209. This is how this guy

  210. reacted to

  211. the promises of God.

  212. And it's almost as if

  213. Moses is saying,

  214. in this chapter,

  215. with that as the backdrop,

  216. do you see what Esau threw away?

  217. Do you see what he threw away?

  218. Do you see what he thwarted?

  219. Do you see what meant nothing to him?

  220. And I'm begging you,

  221. don't make the same mistake.

  222. Do you see how glorious these promises are?

  223. How good God is for his words.

  224. Don't make the same mistake.

  225. And so,

  226. here's what I hope we see

  227. as we journey through this real quick

  228. as disciples of Jesus

  229. in terms of our identity

  230. and our worth.

  231. That who you are today,

  232. and who I am today,

  233. and who we are today,

  234. and who the church is today,

  235. is a community that is formed by,

  236. and fortified with,

  237. and standing to inherit

  238. the unchanging promises of God.

  239. And it's my prayer today

  240. that we would leave,

  241. as we gaze at Jesus,

  242. we would leave here with zero doubt

  243. about God's ability

  244. to deliver on his promises.

  245. And so, as we get there,

  246. and that's where we're going to

  247. kind of finish today,

  248. here's two lessons I think we learned

  249. from this chapter about

  250. the people who are journeying

  251. with faith.

  252. Here's the first one.

  253. Don't be frightened

  254. by what's around you.

  255. So, in the text,

  256. do you see

  257. how there's a famine

  258. facing Isaac?

  259. Do you see that straight off the bat,

  260. chapter 26?

  261. And he thinks to himself,

  262. I'm going to do what my dad did,

  263. and I'm going to head to Egypt,

  264. because in Egypt,

  265. there's help,

  266. and there's food.

  267. But God says,

  268. I want you

  269. to stay here.

  270. So, Isaac's got a choice

  271. to make at this point,

  272. doesn't he?

  273. Will he be obedient,

  274. or will he do the thing

  275. that he thinks makes sense to him?

  276. Will he live by faith,

  277. or will he live by sight?

  278. Which is the question

  279. that faces every single generation

  280. of God's people,

  281. isn't it?

  282. Now, the cultural air

  283. which you and I breathe

  284. every day

  285. goes right against the grain of that.

  286. That if it feels right to you,

  287. then how on earth

  288. could your heart be wrong?

  289. And you spend enough time

  290. in God's words,

  291. and you learn that your heart

  292. is the last thing

  293. that you want to trust.

  294. And actually,

  295. the person of faith

  296. says

  297. that God's word

  298. is the good compass

  299. by which I'm going to sail by.

  300. So, Isaac settles,

  301. do you see,

  302. in this place

  303. called Gerar.

  304. But as he settles there,

  305. do you also see

  306. how he begins

  307. to lose

  308. his nerve?

  309. So, the men of Gerar

  310. inquire about Rebecca,

  311. his wife.

  312. She was attractive

  313. in appearance,

  314. which I take it

  315. is Moses channeling

  316. his understated,

  317. polite Brit.

  318. She's drop-dead gorgeous.

  319. That's what we're meant

  320. to understand here.

  321. And Isaac,

  322. when he gets wind of this,

  323. oh man,

  324. what a spineless fool he is.

  325. Yeah?

  326. And he's making

  327. the same mistake

  328. that Abraham,

  329. his father,

  330. made.

  331. Rather than standing

  332. by his wife

  333. and believing

  334. that the Lord

  335. will protect them both,

  336. what does he say?

  337. She's my,

  338. she's my sister.

  339. Now,

  340. why,

  341. I can't get my head

  342. around that,

  343. why that would be

  344. the first thing

  345. coming into your mind

  346. to play that card.

  347. Yeah?

  348. If we were giving him

  349. the benefit of the doubt,

  350. now,

  351. I'll come on in a minute

  352. just to say that I don't,

  353. okay?

  354. But if we were giving him

  355. the benefit of the doubt,

  356. knowing how the birds

  357. and the bees work,

  358. this could be him,

  359. because Rebecca

  360. is key to this whole

  361. offspring thing,

  362. yeah?

  363. This could be him

  364. trying to protect her

  365. and preserve her life.

  366. But this is where

  367. I'm kind of landing.

  368. That he's pretty much

  369. a coward at this point.

  370. Abimelech says,

  371. verse 9,

  372. why did you do that?

  373. And he says,

  374. lest I die

  375. because of her.

  376. Now,

  377. it's a half-truth,

  378. isn't it,

  379. that Isaac's kind of told?

  380. But in this moment,

  381. I think his heart,

  382. as it reacts,

  383. is revealed.

  384. And it's so often

  385. the case,

  386. this is what the Lord does,

  387. is we find ourselves

  388. reacting,

  389. not in the big things

  390. of life,

  391. but in all the little

  392. details that come our way.

  393. He's revealing

  394. and he's prodding at

  395. and he's forming

  396. our character.

  397. Now,

  398. do you see this

  399. in your own heart?

  400. I see this all the time

  401. in mine.

  402. Right?

  403. The little half-truths

  404. that we tell,

  405. the little exaggerated stories,

  406. the little things

  407. that we think

  408. aren't actually

  409. that big a deal

  410. in God's eyes.

  411. And to be honest,

  412. no one else

  413. kind of sees it.

  414. You know,

  415. kind of doing that

  416. rather than kind of,

  417. you know,

  418. doing what we tell the kids

  419. to just be honest,

  420. honest being the best policy.

  421. Do you see that

  422. in your life?

  423. My heart instinctively

  424. wants to do an Isaac

  425. at certain points in time

  426. and just save

  427. my own skin.

  428. And those little times

  429. when we do that

  430. in our lives,

  431. I take it they're revealing

  432. something big

  433. about what's going on

  434. in our hearts.

  435. What Jerry Bridges

  436. called respectable

  437. sins.

  438. Right?

  439. The little things

  440. that we do

  441. that we think

  442. no one else sees.

  443. They're not one

  444. of the headlines.

  445. They're just one of

  446. these little

  447. respectable things.

  448. We've got to remember

  449. that God sees that.

  450. I take it we need

  451. to recapture something

  452. of what the church

  453. leaders from the past

  454. called Coram Deo.

  455. Okay,

  456. how's your Latin

  457. this morning?

  458. Okay,

  459. Coram

  460. meaning always.

  461. Deo meaning God.

  462. Always

  463. before God.

  464. So God

  465. sees everything

  466. that's going on

  467. in our lives.

  468. There's nothing

  469. that's hidden from him.

  470. He is the all-knowing

  471. one.

  472. And we should live

  473. our lives

  474. every single detail

  475. knowing that we want

  476. to praise him

  477. with every single

  478. little detail.

  479. Always living

  480. before

  481. the face of God.

  482. So why do we

  483. cop out?

  484. Right?

  485. Why is it when

  486. the person at

  487. your workplace

  488. and on the school run

  489. asks you what you

  490. did at the weekend?

  491. There's part of you

  492. that's tempted just

  493. to kind of duck

  494. the question

  495. and ask about

  496. something else.

  497. Why is it

  498. that church leaders

  499. around the country

  500. so many of them

  501. are kind of

  502. fudging what the

  503. Bible says

  504. about sexuality?

  505. Why is that

  506. going on?

  507. The answer is

  508. because the fear

  509. of man

  510. is bigger

  511. in our minds

  512. and greater

  513. in our hearts

  514. than the fear

  515. of the Lord.

  516. Now you've got to say

  517. what is the

  518. antidote to that?

  519. I take it

  520. it's just that

  521. we need to pray

  522. and humble ourselves

  523. and repent

  524. and seek

  525. a big view

  526. of God.

  527. Now here's where

  528. I don't often do

  529. this in sermons

  530. but I'm going to

  531. do it here

  532. okay

  533. just pull someone

  534. out in a good way.

  535. Do you know what

  536. Jackson was telling

  537. me the other day?

  538. And friends

  539. the Lord teaches

  540. me so much

  541. through you

  542. in ways that

  543. you just will

  544. not be aware

  545. of but he does.

  546. He said this

  547. he was talking

  548. about how one

  549. of the options

  550. that he looked

  551. at to getting

  552. back to Canada

  553. in the summer

  554. was the boat.

  555. I said Jackson

  556. how long

  557. is that going

  558. to take you?

  559. Eight days.

  560. Eight days

  561. right?

  562. Waking up each day

  563. just looking

  564. at the sea.

  565. Waking up the next

  566. day just looking

  567. at the sea.

  568. I said why

  569. would you choose

  570. that over just

  571. not flying?

  572. And he said

  573. this phrase

  574. and it's just

  575. in my mind

  576. at the minute

  577. he said I just

  578. wanted to

  579. experience the

  580. distance.

  581. yeah I

  582. wanted to

  583. feel the

  584. the grandeur

  585. of the sea

  586. and how

  587. small I

  588. am

  589. in comparison

  590. to all

  591. of creation.

  592. And we've been

  593. reminded this week

  594. haven't we

  595. that the Atlantic

  596. Ocean

  597. is a

  598. is a beast

  599. it's big

  600. and how much

  601. greater than

  602. the God

  603. who created

  604. all of the

  605. things that

  606. we see

  607. and that phrase

  608. has been

  609. pinging around

  610. my mind

  611. asleep

  612. like a

  613. ball in

  614. a pinball

  615. machine

  616. because it

  617. reveals that

  618. my my view

  619. of God

  620. is way too

  621. small

  622. and my

  623. fear of

  624. man

  625. is way too

  626. big.

  627. You begin

  628. to read

  629. Isaiah

  630. and the

  631. prophets

  632. and that's

  633. the message

  634. to their

  635. generation.

  636. Why regard

  637. man in

  638. whose

  639. nostrils

  640. is breath?

  641. The nations

  642. are but a

  643. drop in the

  644. bucket in

  645. comparison

  646. to him.

  647. And I

  648. take it to

  649. be increasingly

  650. growing in

  651. our understanding

  652. of the

  653. holiness

  654. and the

  655. grandeur

  656. and the

  657. magnificence

  658. of God

  659. as we

  660. immerse

  661. ourselves

  662. in the

  663. word of

  664. God

  665. is an

  666. incredibly

  667. healthy

  668. thing

  669. for our

  670. hearts

  671. to do.

  672. And that's

  673. why Isaac

  674. has totally

  675. lost his

  676. nerve

  677. here.

  678. And that's

  679. the message

  680. to this

  681. generation.

  682. Wandering,

  683. worrying about

  684. what's around

  685. them,

  686. tempted to

  687. conform to

  688. the idols

  689. and just be

  690. like everyone

  691. else around

  692. them.

  693. Moses is

  694. saying don't

  695. be frightened

  696. by what's

  697. around you.

  698. And secondly

  699. he's just

  700. saying don't

  701. be doubtful

  702. of what's

  703. ahead of

  704. you.

  705. Now verse

  706. 12,

  707. when we're

  708. told that

  709. Isaac sowed

  710. in the

  711. land,

  712. I take

  713. it that's

  714. just code

  715. for he

  716. started to

  717. walk by

  718. faith again.

  719. Right?

  720. He started

  721. to do the

  722. thing that

  723. God had

  724. told him

  725. to do.

  726. And what a

  727. year this

  728. was if you

  729. caught that

  730. in the

  731. text.

  732. Imagine

  733. getting this

  734. family Christmas

  735. letter through

  736. the post.

  737. How was the

  738. year gone?

  739. Well we had

  740. a bumper

  741. crop,

  742. our wealth

  743. increased,

  744. our flocks

  745. and our

  746. herds,

  747. their numbers

  748. went through

  749. the roof and

  750. because of

  751. that we had

  752. to hire a

  753. whole heap

  754. of servant

  755. workers.

  756. Pretty good

  757. year for us.

  758. Right?

  759. No wonder

  760. the people

  761. in the land

  762. envy them

  763. as he puts

  764. that out on

  765. Instagram saying

  766. hashtag blessed.

  767. But I think

  768. that's what we

  769. need to see is

  770. exactly what's

  771. going on here.

  772. Right?

  773. This is more

  774. than just Isaac

  775. has got the

  776. Midas touch.

  777. Do you

  778. remember what

  779. those four

  780. Ps,

  781. remember some

  782. of the blessings

  783. that God said

  784. he would give

  785. his people

  786. because of his

  787. promise to

  788. them?

  789. Right?

  790. People

  791. and lands.

  792. Do you

  793. see how

  794. the author

  795. is trying

  796. to tell

  797. us

  798. that God

  799. is beginning

  800. to make

  801. good

  802. on his

  803. promises?

  804. So much

  805. so that

  806. verse 16

  807. Abimelech

  808. says you

  809. need to

  810. leave,

  811. you need

  812. to get

  813. away because

  814. people are

  815. too envious

  816. of you

  817. because you're

  818. getting too

  819. big.

  820. right?

  821. And again

  822. as we fast

  823. forward to

  824. the Exodus

  825. stories,

  826. exactly what

  827. you see is

  828. they begin

  829. to grow

  830. and multiply.

  831. What does

  832. Pharaoh say?

  833. No,

  834. we can't

  835. have this.

  836. Abimelech

  837. says you're

  838. too big and

  839. despite opposition

  840. that comes as a

  841. result of the

  842. wells that they

  843. dig,

  844. verse 22,

  845. do you see

  846. how the

  847. well that they

  848. finally settle

  849. at,

  850. what does he

  851. call it?

  852. Rehoboth

  853. meaning the

  854. Lord has

  855. made room

  856. for us.

  857. In other

  858. words,

  859. the Lord

  860. has provided

  861. like he

  862. said he

  863. would.

  864. Abimelech

  865. even says

  866. so,

  867. verse 28,

  868. we see that

  869. the Lord

  870. has been

  871. with you.

  872. So there's

  873. another P,

  874. do you see it?

  875. We see that

  876. God is with

  877. you,

  878. we see the

  879. presence P.

  880. So to

  881. see the

  882. message to

  883. this generation,

  884. you can put

  885. all your

  886. eggs in

  887. the God

  888. fulfilling his

  889. promises basket.

  890. No need to

  891. split your

  892. risk,

  893. no need to

  894. open different

  895. bank accounts

  896. just in case

  897. one of them

  898. goes under.

  899. No,

  900. no,

  901. no,

  902. you can put

  903. all of it,

  904. stake it all

  905. on God

  906. fulfilling his

  907. promises.

  908. So don't

  909. mistake,

  910. don't make

  911. the same

  912. mistake

  913. that Esau

  914. made.

  915. Don't be

  916. scared of

  917. what's around

  918. you.

  919. Don't be

  920. doubtful

  921. of what's

  922. ahead of

  923. you.

  924. And here's

  925. what I want

  926. us to see

  927. sitting where

  928. we do

  929. in 2023

  930. at this

  931. point in

  932. salvation

  933. history.

  934. I want

  935. us to

  936. understand

  937. that we've

  938. got so

  939. much more

  940. reason to

  941. trust that

  942. God will

  943. make good

  944. on his

  945. promises.

  946. promises.

  947. And the

  948. reason that

  949. we do

  950. is because

  951. of Jesus.

  952. Because he

  953. came from

  954. this family

  955. tree.

  956. We've seen

  957. one baton

  958. pass from

  959. Abraham to

  960. Isaac.

  961. Way down

  962. this family

  963. line is

  964. going to

  965. come Jesus.

  966. Now do you

  967. see how God

  968. makes these

  969. promises?

  970. Who does he

  971. make them

  972. to?

  973. Let me

  974. just stretch

  975. us for

  976. just 5-10

  977. minutes as

  978. we bring

  979. this to a

  980. close.

  981. He makes

  982. them to

  983. offspring.

  984. Yeah?

  985. And the

  986. New Testament

  987. tells us

  988. that that

  989. offspring

  990. is singular.

  991. So there's

  992. one person

  993. that's going

  994. to inherit

  995. and make

  996. way for

  997. these things

  998. to come to

  999. pass,

  1000. these covenant

  1001. blessings.

  1002. Because God

  1003. said to

  1004. Abraham,

  1005. walk before

  1006. me and be

  1007. blameless.

  1008. Right?

  1009. Only the

  1010. person who

  1011. is going to

  1012. fully fulfill

  1013. God's side

  1014. of the

  1015. covenant

  1016. bargain is

  1017. going to be

  1018. the one who's

  1019. going to

  1020. inherit these

  1021. four Ps.

  1022. Only Jesus

  1023. walked before

  1024. the Father

  1025. and was

  1026. blameless.

  1027. Right?

  1028. Only he

  1029. lived the

  1030. perfect life

  1031. so as to

  1032. inherit these

  1033. blessings.

  1034. We couldn't

  1035. do that.

  1036. No chance

  1037. we could do

  1038. that.

  1039. See,

  1040. part of

  1041. this

  1042. covenant

  1043. bargain

  1044. that God

  1045. made with

  1046. Abraham and

  1047. is being

  1048. passed down

  1049. is that

  1050. there would

  1051. be blessings

  1052. for obedience

  1053. and there

  1054. would be

  1055. curses for

  1056. disobedience on

  1057. man's part.

  1058. But the

  1059. wonderful thing

  1060. about the

  1061. story of

  1062. Abraham is

  1063. that God

  1064. is so

  1065. committed to

  1066. getting his

  1067. people the

  1068. blessing that

  1069. he says,

  1070. I'm even

  1071. going to take

  1072. those curses

  1073. on myself.

  1074. And that's

  1075. what Jesus

  1076. did as he

  1077. dies on the

  1078. cross.

  1079. He is

  1080. taking the

  1081. curses that

  1082. we deserved

  1083. on himself.

  1084. Do you know

  1085. something I'd

  1086. never seen

  1087. before until

  1088. this week?

  1089. Love this.

  1090. Genesis chapter

  1091. three.

  1092. As sin

  1093. enters the

  1094. world,

  1095. and as

  1096. God says

  1097. there's a

  1098. curse now,

  1099. you will

  1100. feel the

  1101. effects of

  1102. sin.

  1103. What is

  1104. one of the

  1105. symbols of

  1106. the curse

  1107. in terms of

  1108. the ground?

  1109. It's

  1110. thorns,

  1111. isn't it?

  1112. Thorns and

  1113. thistles.

  1114. Scottish people

  1115. kind of don't

  1116. talk about

  1117. the thistles.

  1118. Thorns.

  1119. And what do

  1120. you see

  1121. going on

  1122. as Jesus

  1123. goes to

  1124. the cross?

  1125. What is he

  1126. wearing on

  1127. his head?

  1128. A crown of

  1129. what?

  1130. A crown of

  1131. thorns.

  1132. Do you

  1133. understand

  1134. that Jesus

  1135. is taking

  1136. the covenant

  1137. curses that

  1138. his people

  1139. deserved on

  1140. himself?

  1141. That's what

  1142. he does as

  1143. he goes to

  1144. the cross.

  1145. He hangs

  1146. on a tree.

  1147. So there's

  1148. another sign

  1149. of the

  1150. covenant

  1151. curses.

  1152. He takes

  1153. them in

  1154. our place.

  1155. And with

  1156. that in

  1157. mind,

  1158. as you

  1159. see here,

  1160. Isaac the

  1161. coward,

  1162. when faced

  1163. with the

  1164. decision that

  1165. it's either

  1166. your bride's

  1167. life or

  1168. it's yours,

  1169. and he

  1170. says,

  1171. I'm

  1172. picking

  1173. mine.

  1174. You cannot

  1175. help but

  1176. think of

  1177. Jesus as

  1178. he goes to

  1179. the cross

  1180. with his

  1181. bride in

  1182. mind.

  1183. His bride

  1184. being his

  1185. people,

  1186. and he's

  1187. faced with

  1188. the exact

  1189. same question.

  1190. It's either

  1191. your life

  1192. or it's

  1193. hers.

  1194. It's either

  1195. your life

  1196. or it's

  1197. your people's.

  1198. Isaac made

  1199. his call,

  1200. and Jesus

  1201. also makes

  1202. his call,

  1203. but he does

  1204. the opposite

  1205. of what

  1206. Isaac does.

  1207. He says,

  1208. it's me

  1209. instead of

  1210. her.

  1211. And there,

  1212. as he dies

  1213. on the cross,

  1214. he is

  1215. uniting

  1216. himself to

  1217. the death

  1218. penalty that

  1219. every single

  1220. one of us

  1221. deserved.

  1222. and in

  1223. turn,

  1224. we are

  1225. united

  1226. because of

  1227. our faith

  1228. to these

  1229. blessings

  1230. that only

  1231. he deserves.

  1232. And that's

  1233. why I love,

  1234. we started

  1235. with it

  1236. today,

  1237. that chorus

  1238. that kind

  1239. of captures

  1240. the language

  1241. of Ephesians

  1242. 1.

  1243. Ephesians

  1244. 1 starts

  1245. about how

  1246. God has

  1247. blessed us

  1248. with every

  1249. spiritual

  1250. blessing in

  1251. the heavenly

  1252. places.

  1253. He has

  1254. what to

  1255. us?

  1256. He has

  1257. chosen us

  1258. He has

  1259. redeemed us,

  1260. He has

  1261. justified us,

  1262. and He has

  1263. adopted us

  1264. as His

  1265. sons and

  1266. daughters.

  1267. Not because

  1268. of what

  1269. we've done,

  1270. but because

  1271. of our

  1272. covenant

  1273. King who

  1274. died on

  1275. the cross

  1276. for us

  1277. and shares

  1278. with us

  1279. His life.

  1280. And in

  1281. Him,

  1282. those four

  1283. Ps are

  1284. ours.

  1285. A people,

  1286. Christians all

  1287. over the

  1288. world,

  1289. today,

  1290. do you

  1291. know,

  1292. just love

  1293. the fact

  1294. that there's

  1295. a small

  1296. number of

  1297. us today,

  1298. but how

  1299. many different

  1300. countries and

  1301. how many

  1302. different continents

  1303. are represented?

  1304. Maybe we

  1305. can chat

  1306. about that

  1307. at the

  1308. picnic.

  1309. Global

  1310. people that

  1311. Jesus has

  1312. gathered for

  1313. Himself,

  1314. His presence,

  1315. it's one of the

  1316. blessings that

  1317. we have,

  1318. is God's

  1319. Spirit,

  1320. not living

  1321. over us,

  1322. but living

  1323. in us.

  1324. A place,

  1325. God is leading

  1326. us home

  1327. to

  1328. Himself.

  1329. And that's

  1330. why the

  1331. Spirit living

  1332. inside of

  1333. us testifies

  1334. with us

  1335. that yes,

  1336. that's

  1337. true,

  1338. sealed us

  1339. with the

  1340. Spirit,

  1341. wonderfully

  1342. true,

  1343. partially

  1344. now,

  1345. but all

  1346. of these

  1347. things are

  1348. going to be

  1349. fully amplified

  1350. in God's

  1351. new creation,

  1352. the place

  1353. where He's

  1354. taken us.

  1355. So who

  1356. are we?

  1357. Where are

  1358. we?

  1359. Where are

  1360. we going?

  1361. Come to think

  1362. of it,

  1363. who is

  1364. the Lord?

  1365. Well,

  1366. here is my

  1367. plea to us,

  1368. dear brothers

  1369. and sisters

  1370. in the

  1371. faith,

  1372. is not

  1373. to do

  1374. an Esau,

  1375. but to

  1376. be firm

  1377. in God's

  1378. ability to

  1379. deliver on

  1380. His promises.

  1381. And by

  1382. God's sheer

  1383. grace,

  1384. we have been

  1385. scooped up

  1386. and this

  1387. is our

  1388. story.

  1389. Whatever is

  1390. going on in

  1391. your life

  1392. today,

  1393. here's what I

  1394. want you to

  1395. know as we

  1396. bring this

  1397. to a close,

  1398. that right

  1399. here,

  1400. however you're

  1401. feeling,

  1402. whatever you're

  1403. facing,

  1404. whatever sin

  1405. is weighing

  1406. you down,

  1407. dear brothers

  1408. and sisters,

  1409. let's come

  1410. back to

  1411. Jesus and

  1412. remember that

  1413. in Him,

  1414. this is our

  1415. self-worth.

  1416. Now,

  1417. here's the

  1418. thing,

  1419. just as we

  1420. close,

  1421. just for one

  1422. minute,

  1423. to kind

  1424. of bring

  1425. us back

  1426. to the

  1427. centrality

  1428. of where

  1429. I think

  1430. this is

  1431. meant to

  1432. lead this

  1433. first generation.

  1434. Put your

  1435. hands up

  1436. this morning

  1437. if you

  1438. turned on

  1439. a light.

  1440. This is

  1441. going somewhere,

  1442. trust me,

  1443. okay?

  1444. Yeah?

  1445. I turned

  1446. on a light

  1447. this morning.

  1448. Now,

  1449. as far as I

  1450. can see,

  1451. there are

  1452. two types

  1453. of light

  1454. switch in

  1455. the world

  1456. that I

  1457. know of.

  1458. You've

  1459. got your

  1460. classic on

  1461. and off,

  1462. you've

  1463. also got

  1464. your

  1465. dimmer.

  1466. You can

  1467. kind of

  1468. phase in and

  1469. phase out

  1470. the light.

  1471. And I

  1472. think this

  1473. passage,

  1474. as Moses

  1475. writes us,

  1476. he's getting

  1477. us to think

  1478. about both

  1479. of those

  1480. lights.

  1481. Okay?

  1482. First of

  1483. all,

  1484. as he asks

  1485. us to examine

  1486. our hearts

  1487. and see where

  1488. we're at,

  1489. first of

  1490. all,

  1491. think about

  1492. the on

  1493. and off

  1494. switch.

  1495. When it

  1496. comes to

  1497. your faith

  1498. in Jesus,

  1499. are you on

  1500. or you off?

  1501. Are you in

  1502. or you out?

  1503. Are you trusting

  1504. in the promises

  1505. of God or not?

  1506. And I

  1507. think about

  1508. the dimmer.

  1509. See,

  1510. the thing

  1511. about the

  1512. dimmer is

  1513. it can

  1514. be on,

  1515. but it

  1516. can be

  1517. really,

  1518. really low.

  1519. And I

  1520. think the

  1521. challenge that

  1522. comes to

  1523. us that

  1524. are on

  1525. is as it

  1526. concerns both

  1527. our obedience

  1528. to and our

  1529. confidence in

  1530. God's promises

  1531. and having seen

  1532. how committed

  1533. he is to

  1534. bringing them

  1535. to completion

  1536. in Christ

  1537. is that

  1538. when it

  1539. comes to

  1540. the dimmer

  1541. of light

  1542. of our

  1543. faith,

  1544. the challenge

  1545. here is to

  1546. turn it

  1547. up.

  1548. Turn it

  1549. up.

  1550. Okay,

  1551. whatever that

  1552. looks like in

  1553. your life just

  1554. now,

  1555. in terms of

  1556. your witness

  1557. at work,

  1558. turn it

  1559. up.

  1560. In terms of

  1561. maybe your

  1562. church attendance,

  1563. you know,

  1564. I pray that

  1565. for many of

  1566. us,

  1567. the Lord

  1568. would be at

  1569. work in

  1570. our life,

  1571. that church

  1572. would stop

  1573. being something

  1574. that we go

  1575. to and

  1576. you would

  1577. come to

  1578. the centre

  1579. and realise

  1580. that it's

  1581. something that

  1582. we are part

  1583. of.

  1584. Yeah?

  1585. Turning it

  1586. up.

  1587. You know,

  1588. the way that

  1589. we raise our

  1590. children,

  1591. turning it

  1592. up as we

  1593. thought about

  1594. it today,

  1595. whatever this

  1596. looks like

  1597. in our

  1598. lives,

  1599. I think the

  1600. challenge of

  1601. this passage

  1602. is to turn

  1603. it up.

  1604. Turn it

  1605. up.

  1606. I know

  1607. not why

  1608. God's wondrous

  1609. grace to me

  1610. he has made

  1611. known,

  1612. nor why

  1613. unworthy

  1614. Christ in

  1615. love

  1616. redeem me

  1617. for his

  1618. own,

  1619. but I

  1620. know whom

  1621. I have

  1622. believed,

  1623. and I'm

  1624. persuaded

  1625. that he

  1626. is able

  1627. to keep

  1628. that which

  1629. I've

  1630. committed

  1631. unto him

  1632. against

  1633. that day.

  1634. Let's pray,

  1635. will we?

  1636. And so,

  1637. Father,

  1638. it's our

  1639. prayer this

  1640. morning,

  1641. that by

  1642. your grace

  1643. that you

  1644. would just

  1645. increase

  1646. our

  1647. appetite

  1648. for

  1649. and our

  1650. assurance

  1651. of

  1652. what you

  1653. have won

  1654. for us

  1655. in the

  1656. person of

  1657. your son,

  1658. Jesus.

  1659. Lord,

  1660. thank you

  1661. that there

  1662. is just

  1663. simply no

  1664. one like

  1665. him.

  1666. Father,

  1667. who else

  1668. would die

  1669. for his

  1670. enemies?

  1671. God,

  1672. you

  1673. have to

  1674. be with

  1675. us.

  1676. And so,

  1677. Father,

  1678. as we

  1679. contemplate your

  1680. outrageous, unmerited

  1681. love for us

  1682. that's seen

  1683. there,

  1684. oh,

  1685. Father,

  1686. would you,

  1687. by your

  1688. spirit,

  1689. increase our

  1690. desire for

  1691. not just

  1692. the blessings,

  1693. blessings, but

  1694. our desire and

  1695. our hunger and

  1696. our affection for

  1697. you.

  1698. So,

  1699. Father,

  1700. be with us as

  1701. we continue on

  1702. this morning.

  1703. I thank you for

  1704. my friends here.

  1705. I thank you for

  1706. the role which

  1707. we have in

  1708. each other's

  1709. lives.

  1710. And Lord,

  1711. may we

  1712. together spur

  1713. one another on

  1714. towards love

  1715. and good deeds.

  1716. And in

  1717. Jesus'

  1718. strong name

  1719. we pray.

  1720. Amen.

  1721. Amen.
