  1. And this morning's passage is an especially tricky passage. And before we read it together, just to get us thinking, I want to ask some questions.

  2. Firstly, really, what are your roots? What are your roots? I don't know if you've ever seen the kind of ancestry show on the BBC.

  3. Who do you think you are? Where celebrities go on it to kind of discover what their roots are.

  4. I watched an episode recently with the comedian Jack Whitehall, and he got all excited about one of his ancestors being from Birmingham.

  5. He was expecting, I think, to be descended from like a Peaky Blinder or at least some minor aristocrat or something.

  6. Instead, he discovered a man who had a taste for sleeping with prostitutes, who got syphilis, who gave it to his wife and who died in an asylum.

  7. What are your roots?

  8. One of my ancestors was the Bishop of London. I've always been quite proud of that fact.

  9. And as far as I can tell, he was a pretty good guy, preaching passionately, working hard for social change in the East End of London.

  10. But I discovered a couple of years ago that he wasn't just straightforwardly a good guy.

  11. He was the Bishop of London during World War I, and he earned the nickname the belligerent bishop.

  12. Apparently, he would regularly use awful xenophobic language about ordinary German people.

  13. And he even promoted the idea that we should be bombing civilians, that that would be the best means of winning the war.

  14. What are your roots?

  15. If you're a Christian here today, I think it's also worth asking, what are your Christian roots?

  16. I mean, you can think about the person who told you about Jesus and who told them and who told them and so on.

  17. But go far enough back.

  18. And if you're a Christian here today, it's probably partly because of this guy called Charlemagne.

  19. You might have heard of Charlemagne.

  20. He was the first man to unite Western Europe and Central Europe, the kind of first guy to do that since the Roman Empire.

  21. And it was during his reign that the gospel was first brought to the shores of Britain.

  22. If you're here today and you're a Christian, you've got a lot to be grateful to this guy for.

  23. Sounds like a pretty good guy.

  24. But really, things were very messy.

  25. In the year 782, more than 4,500 Saxons were massacred by Charlemagne for refusing to convert to Christianity.

  26. A bit like in our passage today, he had 18 children to seven different women.

  27. And those are our roots.

  28. If you're a Christian here today, it's also probably partly because of this guy, Oliver Cromwell.

  29. Again, you've probably heard of Cromwell.

  30. He was an important figure in the kind of continued reformation in Britain,

  31. challenging the assumptions of divine monarchy and encouraging evangelical, independent Protestantism.

  32. We've got a lot to be grateful to him for.

  33. Sounds pretty good.

  34. But again, in doing so, things were messy.

  35. In Ireland, October 1649, and apologies for the history lesson here.

  36. But in October 1649, troops under Cromwell's command killed more than 3,000 people, including 1,500 civilians.

  37. As you can imagine, he was and in many places still is wildly unpopular.

  38. But these are our Christian roots.

  39. The Crusades, the 30 years war, transatlantic slavery, witch hunts, the Inquisition.

  40. It was Christians that did all of that.

  41. These are our roots.

  42. In every century of Christian history, atrocity after atrocity has been committed.

  43. And we can discuss whether these people really were Christians.

  44. I'm sure some of them weren't, but I'm equally sure that some of them really were.

  45. And either way, there's no denying it.

  46. If you're a Christian here today, these are our roots.

  47. As we look down the ages and as we assess the behavior of individual Christians,

  48. maybe especially as we assess the behavior of the Christian church,

  49. as we assess our roots, we have to say, don't we, there is something deeply rotten there.

  50. In fact, friends of mine have often told me that this is exactly why they're not Christians.

  51. Why they could never be Christians.

  52. Just look at all the bad stuff that Christians have done.

  53. And they're right.

  54. And, you know, I think it's actually much worse than that.

  55. Because those are our roots, but it's also true today, isn't it?

  56. Friends of mine, they look at history and they say that.

  57. But for them, it's also the hypocrisy in the church.

  58. The hypocrisy of Christians.

  59. You know, they look at us and they just see that we don't look like anything like the Jesus that we say we follow.

  60. And again, they're right, aren't they?

  61. They're right about me anyway.

  62. Nothing like Jesus.

  63. My friends know me well enough.

  64. If they've ever seen me behind the wheel of a car, as simple as that,

  65. they know that I can get very angry and that I'm extremely selfish.

  66. And that in so many ways, I'm just like them.

  67. Do your friends know that about you?

  68. Maybe as you look around this morning, I guess it's possible that you feel like you're the dirtiest and rottenest person in this room.

  69. And maybe you feel like if only they knew, they probably wouldn't have even let me in this morning.

  70. Let me tell you that the truth is the person sitting next to you probably feels exactly the same way.

  71. And if they don't, maybe you're here this morning and that's not you.

  72. And instead, you think you're doing pretty well, that you actually deserve to be here,

  73. that you deserve his grace, that you've done everything necessary for God to be kind to you.

  74. Either way, whoever you are this morning, wherever you sit, I guess, on that spectrum, you need to know this.

  75. As we look at our rotten roots,

  76. we have to say that the Christian church could only possibly exist today by God's grace.

  77. And as we look at our lives, we have to say the only way that it's going to continue is by God's grace,

  78. his utterly undeserved kindness to us.

  79. God establishes his people by grace in spite of their mess.

  80. And God keeps his people by grace in spite of their mess.

  81. Grace is the way in.

  82. And grace is the way on.

  83. We've been in this series in Genesis over the last couple of months when God's grace meets our mess.

  84. It's the story of Jacob.

  85. Just before we read our passage this morning, a little bit of context so that you know where we've got to in this story,

  86. if you haven't been here.

  87. We've seen that the key to understanding this story are God's promises to his people,

  88. especially the promises he makes through this family, the promises to Abraham.

  89. We've just seen one of those with Ian and then to Abraham's son and then to Isaac's son, now to Jacob.

  90. So four things, really.

  91. Promises of a place to call home.

  92. Promises of his presence with them.

  93. Promises of a glorious purpose that they would bless the nations.

  94. And then most importantly for us this morning, and as Ian has read,

  95. the promises that they would be a numerous people.

  96. In Genesis chapter 15, we saw God's promise of that in that way to Abraham.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  97. In chapter 26, that promise is reaffirmed to Isaac.

  98. He says, I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky.

  99. And that is a very unlikely promise.

  100. And not least because both Abraham and Isaac struggle to have children.

  101. But God does just enough to continue their family line.

  102. And the promise continues, as we saw just a couple of weeks ago in chapter 28,

  103. the promise to Jacob.

  104. All four elements were there.

  105. Place, presence, purpose, and people.

  106. Especially for today, your descendants will be like the dust of the earth.

  107. And so as we come to our reading this morning, that promise begins to be fulfilled.

  108. But it's not exactly sunshine and roses.

  109. And so turn to Genesis chapter 29 with me.

    Genesis 29 chapter mention

  110. You'll find it on page 32 of the Pew Bibles.

  111. Genesis chapter 29.

    Genesis 29 chapter mention

  112. We'll mostly be in chapter 30, actually, but we'll start in chapter 29.

  113. See with me how God's grace was at work, even in a massive, massive mess.

  114. So chapter 29 from verse 31.

  115. When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, he enabled her to conceive.

  116. But Rachel remained childless.

  117. Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.

  118. She named him Reuben, for she said,

  119. It is because the Lord has seen my misery.

  120. Surely my husband will love me now.

  121. She conceived again.

  122. And when she gave birth to a son, she said,

  123. Because the Lord heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too.

  124. So she named him Simeon.

  125. Again, she conceived.

  126. And when she gave birth to a son, she said,

  127. Now at last my husband will become attached to me,

  128. because I have borne him three sons.

  129. So he was named Levi.

  130. She conceived again.

  131. And when she gave birth to a son, she said,

  132. This time I will praise the Lord.

  133. So she named him Judah.

  134. Then she stopped having children.

  135. When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children,

  136. she became jealous of her sister.

  137. So she said to Jacob,

  138. Give me children or I'll die.

  139. Jacob became angry with her and said,

  140. Am I in the place of God?

  141. Who has kept you from having children?

  142. Then she said,

  143. Here is Bilhah, my servant.

  144. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me,

  145. and I too can build a family through her.

  146. So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife.

  147. Jacob slept with her and she became pregnant and bore him a son.

  148. Then Rachel said,

  149. God has vindicated me.

  150. He has listened to my plea and given me a son.

  151. Because of this, she named him Dan.

  152. Rachel's servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.

  153. Then Rachel said,

  154. I have had a great struggle with my sister and I have won.

  155. So she named him Naphtali.

  156. When Leah saw that she had stopped having children,

  157. she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

  158. Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.

  159. Then Leah said,

  160. What good fortune?

  161. So she named him Gad.

  162. Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.

  163. Then Leah said,

  164. How happy I am.

  165. The woman will call me happy.

  166. So she named him Asher.

  167. During wheat harvest,

  168. Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants,

  169. which he brought to his mother Leah.

  170. Rachel said to Leah,

  171. Please give me some of your son's mandrakes.

  172. But she said to her,

  173. Wasn't it enough that you took away my husband?

  174. Will you take my son's mandrakes too?

  175. Very well,

  176. Rachel said,

  177. He can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes.

  178. So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening,

  179. Leah went out to meet him.

  180. You must sleep with me,

  181. she said.

  182. I have hired you with my son's mandrakes.

  183. So he slept with her that night.

  184. God listened to Leah and she became pregnant

  185. and bore Jacob a fifth son.

  186. Then Leah said,

  187. God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.

  188. So she named him Issachar.

  189. Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son.

  190. Then Leah said,

  191. God has presented me with a precious gift.

  192. This time my husband will treat me with honor

  193. because I have borne him six sons.

  194. So she named him Zebulun.

  195. Sometime later,

  196. she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinner.

  197. Then God remembered Rachel.

  198. He listened to her and enabled her to conceive.

  199. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said,

  200. God has taken away my disgrace.

  201. She named him Joseph and said,

  202. May the Lord add to me another son.

  203. Earlier this year,

  204. just a few months ago,

  205. I read that section of Genesis with Ben,

  206. Ben Vesa,

  207. a member here at the church.

  208. And we got to this passage literally the week

  209. before he married Cater.

  210. And so you can imagine how we felt

  211. as we read this chapter together.

  212. But before we go any further,

  213. let's put ourselves in the shoes of the original readers,

  214. the people that this was written for.

  215. Let's ask how they were feeling

  216. as they read it or heard it read.

  217. Because this book,

  218. it was written by Moses for the Exodus generation.

  219. So it's something like 500 years after the action,

  220. after Jacob.

  221. God has rescued this people out of slavery in Egypt

  222. and they're now in the desert.

  223. Notice how those promises that we talked about are going.

  224. They don't have a place to call home.

  225. They certainly aren't fulfilling their purpose of nation blessing.

  226. They are going to have God's presence with them.

  227. That will be the tabernacle.

  228. But really only one man once a year will get access to that.

  229. But crucially,

  230. they have become numerous.

  231. From a family of around 70 people

  232. when they first went into Egypt,

  233. now over a million when they leave.

  234. The people promise,

  235. in many ways,

  236. the people promise has been fulfilled.

  237. But it's actually not going very well.

  238. They're not having a great time in the desert.

  239. They might have been slaves in Egypt,

  240. but at least they were well fed.

  241. At least they had a home.

  242. And we're told about their grumbling

  243. and their moaning and their infighting.

  244. We're told about their idol worship

  245. and their rebellion against God.

  246. And so as they hear this story about Jacob,

  247. as they hear about their roots,

  248. the beginnings,

  249. the genesis of their people,

  250. the message was this.

  251. God established you as his people by grace

  252. in spite of their mess,

  253. in spite of your mess.

  254. And God will keep you by grace

  255. in spite of the mess.

  256. It is the way in

  257. and it is the way on.

  258. And so here's the story.

  259. As we read it, did you see?

  260. It's sort of like a twisted competition.

  261. You've got Leah in one corner.

  262. You've got Rachel in the other corner.

  263. Two sisters,

  264. each competing for what the other sister has.

  265. Now have a look at verse 30 of chapter 29.

  266. We didn't read it just before our passage.

  267. Back in verse 30,

  268. Jacob loved Rachel more than he loved Leah.

  269. Really that's instead of,

  270. in place of Leah.

  271. So Rachel is odds-on favorite

  272. in this competition for love.

  273. But notice in verse 31,

  274. Leah may not be loved,

  275. but Rachel is childless.

  276. And we'll see in chapter one of verse,

  277. sorry, verse one of chapter 30,

  278. that that is what Rachel desperately wants.

  279. Children.

  280. Leah wants love.

  281. Rachel wants children.

  282. Each competing, as we'll see,

  283. for what the other sister has.

  284. Competing really for their husband.

  285. Both of them desiring happy families.

  286. And so the competition begins.

  287. The first point goes to Leah.

  288. See in verse 32,

  289. Leah became pregnant,

  290. gave birth to a son.

  291. She named him Reuben.

  292. One nil.

  293. And if you're not sure that this is a competition,

  294. and I'm just making that up,

  295. notice Reuben's name.

  296. You probably have a footnote in your Bible.

  297. I think in the Pew Bible,

  298. it says that it means see a son.

  299. So Leah has struck the first blow.

  300. And this name is like a celebration.

  301. And it's a celebration designed to kind of show off,

  302. to make sure that everyone knows and remembers

  303. that she is winning in this competition.

  304. Every time they speak about Reuben,

  305. it's look, a son.

  306. Every time they call his name,

  307. look, a son.

  308. It's a celebration.

  309. Leah is winning.

  310. And yet in verse 32,

  311. can you hear her heartache?

  312. Surely my husband will love me now.

  313. She desperately wants him to love her.

  314. She desperately wants happy families.

  315. And then immediately, verse 33,

  316. another son, two nil.

  317. Another in verse 34, three nil.

  318. She's definitely winning,

  319. but the heartache continues.

  320. Now at last,

  321. my husband will become attached to me.

  322. Verse 35,

  323. the sons keep coming.

  324. It's four nil.

  325. And then at the end of chapter 29,

  326. then she stopped having children.

  327. Halftime in the baby making competition.

  328. And so Rachel is four nil down at halftime.

  329. She goes in to have a chat with her husband

  330. in verse one of chapter 30.

  331. See what she says?

  332. Give me children or I'll die.

  333. Leah's desire for her husband's love is heartbreaking.

  334. But so is this, isn't it?

  335. Rachel desperately wants children.

  336. She too desperately wants happy families.

  337. And Jacob's response is really good theology.

  338. Not that sensitive, but good theology.

  339. Am I in the place of God?

  340. He recognizes that conception

  341. is ultimately in God's power.

  342. Obviously, man and woman need to do their thing

  343. and timing needs to be right and whatever else.

  344. But ultimately,

  345. whether a baby is produced is always a miracle.

  346. And so it's not my fault, says Jacob.

  347. Rachel isn't satisfied with that answer.

  348. And so she makes a substitution.

  349. In comes Bilhah, her servant.

  350. Apparently, that was actually quite normal,

  351. kind of ancient practice

  352. for a servant to step in

  353. and give it a go

  354. when the couple aren't able to conceive.

  355. And the resulting child

  356. would actually legally belong

  357. to the one that they serve.

  358. And that's exactly what happens.

  359. In fact, Bilhah has two sons.

  360. Score is 4-2.

  361. And notice again,

  362. if you're not convinced

  363. that this is a competition,

  364. have a look at verse eight of chapter 30.

  365. What does Rachel say?

  366. I have had a struggle with my sister

  367. and I have won.

  368. She's very confident here

  369. that the comeback is on.

  370. But Leah, Leah remember,

  371. has stopped having children.

  372. She sees that the substitution

  373. is quite a good tactic.

  374. So she subs in her servant, Zilpar.

  375. And Zilpar conceives twice as well.

  376. So it's 6-2.

  377. A time for another change of tactic then

  378. from Rachel,

  379. a kind of nutritional boost,

  380. a performance enhancer.

  381. In verse 14,

  382. Reuben heads out to get some mandrakes.

  383. That is, I think,

  384. as if to underline Leah's

  385. absolute dominance in this game.

  386. She brings out her son

  387. to help her have more sons.

  388. See, in the ancient world,

  389. the mandrake plant

  390. was apparently good for fertility

  391. and probably superstition.

  392. Notice the text doesn't really deal

  393. with any of that,

  394. doesn't confirm

  395. whether that's true or not.

  396. It doesn't tell us

  397. if mandrakes are a good thing

  398. or a bad thing.

  399. It just says,

  400. this is what the woman did.

  401. And it's a blunt reminder,

  402. I think,

  403. in the middle of this competition,

  404. as Leah and Rachel

  405. fight for their husband's love

  406. and his babies,

  407. as they fight for happy families,

  408. there's an awful irony here,

  409. as Leah uses Reuben in this way,

  410. that children are caught

  411. in the crossfire,

  412. that children are literally

  413. growing up in the mess

  414. of this awful competition.

  415. And worse than that,

  416. because as Reuben gets

  417. some of the performance enhancer,

  418. Rachel makes this dreadful bargain

  419. with Leah.

  420. See in verse 15,

  421. give me the mandrakes

  422. and you can sleep

  423. with Jacob tonight.

  424. She essentially sells

  425. a night of sex

  426. with Jacob

  427. in exchange

  428. for these performance enhancers.

  429. Notice how the author repeats

  430. that Leah has stopped

  431. having children.

  432. We get it at the end

  433. of chapter 29,

  434. as we've seen,

  435. but then again in verse 9 here.

  436. I think we can assume

  437. that she was probably

  438. too old to have kids,

  439. that nature had run its course.

  440. And so Rachel thinks

  441. it's safe enough

  442. letting her sleep with Jacob.

  443. Rachel can then get the mandrakes,

  444. get the performance enhancer

  445. and have children.

  446. And her tactic

  447. just massively backfires.

  448. See in verse 16,

  449. Leah with the ultimate chat up line,

  450. you must sleep with me

  451. because I have hired you.

  452. She's basically turned her husband

  453. into a sex slave.

  454. It's so grim.

  455. And then despite the repetition

  456. that she stopped having children,

  457. God gets to work

  458. and she has another child.

  459. Seven, two.

  460. Somehow in verse 19,

  461. she's persuaded her husband

  462. back for another.

  463. Nine, two.

  464. And then she has a daughter

  465. in verse 21.

  466. Sorry, eight, two.

  467. And then a daughter,

  468. nine, two in verse 21.

  469. It looks as though Leah

  470. has well and truly won

  471. this competition, doesn't it?

  472. And yet her heartache

  473. right at the end of the chapter

  474. is still there in verse 20.

  475. This time my husband

  476. will treat me with honor.

  477. Nine children later

  478. and still Leah is crying out

  479. for the love of her husband.

  480. And then finally,

  481. almost as a sort of

  482. consolation prize,

  483. Rachel does conceive herself

  484. for the first time

  485. in verse 23.

  486. Final score,

  487. nine, three.

  488. It's quite a story, isn't it?

  489. And it's a strange competition.

  490. I think it's really hard to know

  491. who we're supposed

  492. to be rooting for here.

  493. Because you can see

  494. how Moses is giving us clues

  495. all the way through

  496. what these people are like.

  497. Every character in this story

  498. is sinning

  499. and being sinned against

  500. as they fight

  501. for happy families.

  502. And it is anything

  503. but just broken,

  504. messy relationships

  505. everywhere.

  506. If you've been wondering

  507. through all of this,

  508. why the Bible doesn't

  509. just explicitly condemn

  510. these things,

  511. why doesn't it make a comment

  512. on the fact that Jacob

  513. has more than one wife?

  514. Or the fact that

  515. they're literally paying

  516. for sex or using wives'

  517. servants as sex slaves?

  518. I hope you can see

  519. that though the Bible

  520. doesn't explicitly condemn them,

  521. it is pretty clear.

  522. It has always been God's plan, right?

  523. From the first pages

  524. of the Bible

  525. in Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  526. God's plan is that

  527. one man would marry

  528. one woman

  529. and that they would be

  530. together for life.

  531. That was always God's plan.

  532. That remains God's plan today.

  533. And I don't think

  534. Moses needs to tell us

  535. that Jacob and Leah

  536. and Rachel aren't doing that.

  537. I don't think he needs

  538. to explicitly condemn it

  539. because the consequences

  540. of living out with God's plan

  541. are just really clear

  542. in this story, aren't they?

  543. It's a mess.

  544. And the truth is,

  545. sin always leads to a mess.

  546. The more you ignore God's plan,

  547. the more you walk away from him.

  548. You may get away with it

  549. for a while,

  550. but the more that you do that,

  551. the more of a mess

  552. you're going to end up in.

  553. It's what we see here, isn't it?

  554. And I think if we're honest,

  555. we all know that's true,

  556. even if it's just in small ways.

  557. For that wilderness generation,

  558. the people that we said

  559. that Moses was writing this for,

  560. the application is really clear,

  561. isn't it?

  562. You have become a numerous people,

  563. but look at your roots.

  564. Look at how much of a mess it is.

  565. You need to know that God established

  566. his people by grace,

  567. not just in spite of,

  568. but in and through their mess.

  569. This is his wonderful,

  570. undeserved kindness.

  571. If you can see that about your roots,

  572. then you will know

  573. that God will keep his people by grace

  574. in and through their mess.

  575. It is the way in

  576. and it is the way on.

  577. Do you know,

  578. God is more active in this section

  579. that we've just looked at,

  580. more active here

  581. than in any other place

  582. in the story of Jacob.

  583. And so just two details quickly

  584. before we put the whole thing

  585. back together for ourselves.

  586. See how God acts.

  587. See his grace to the people

  588. just in this story.

  589. Firstly, God hears his messy people

  590. and then we'll see that

  591. he also helps his messy people.

  592. So first, God hears his messy people.

  593. And notice that both Leah and Rachel

  594. make statements

  595. about what they think God is doing

  596. in the midst of their competition.

  597. There are lots of examples of this.

  598. Here are a couple.

  599. In verse 32 of chapter 29,

  600. Leah says,

  601. the Lord has seen my misery.

  602. Again in verse 33,

  603. she says,

  604. the Lord heard that I am not loved.

  605. Rachel too does the same sort of thing

  606. in chapter 30, verse six.

  607. God has vindicated me.

  608. He has listened to my plea.

  609. Leah again in verse 18,

  610. God has rewarded me

  611. for giving my servant to my husband.

  612. Over and over again,

  613. these two sisters make statements

  614. about what God is doing.

  615. But I don't think we're supposed

  616. to take their word for it.

  617. In fact, I think we're probably

  618. supposed to be skeptical

  619. about what their theories

  620. about what God is up to are like.

  621. In their mess,

  622. I'm pretty sure God

  623. is not vindicating them.

  624. And I certainly don't think

  625. God is rewarding them.

  626. But they are definitely right

  627. that God is working.

  628. I see in verse 17,

  629. Moses, the writer,

  630. he tells us in verse 17

  631. that God listened to Leah

  632. and she became pregnant.

  633. And in verse 22,

  634. he tells us,

  635. God remembered Rachel.

  636. He listened to her

  637. and enabled her to conceive.

  638. What can Moses possibly mean

  639. that God listened to these sisters?

  640. We don't see them pray.

  641. These sisters who had bought

  642. and sold their husband for sex,

  643. these sisters who had pawned off

  644. their own servants

  645. as sex slaves for their husband,

  646. these sisters who have been

  647. battling with one another

  648. for their husband's love

  649. and babies,

  650. these sisters,

  651. like I say,

  652. as far as we can tell,

  653. have not uttered a single prayer

  654. to their God.

  655. And yet,

  656. how is God at work?

  657. He hears them.

  658. He hears their unspoken pleas

  659. to be loved.

  660. It's the only thing

  661. that Moses tells us

  662. that God is explicitly

  663. doing for them.

  664. These unspoken pleas

  665. for family.

  666. And they may have sprung

  667. from the worst of motives

  668. and in the midst

  669. of the worst of messes.

  670. And yet we're told

  671. God hears them.

  672. It's the utterly undeserved

  673. kindness of grace.

  674. The way in

  675. and the way on.

  676. And that is wonderful news

  677. for all of us

  678. in the room today.

  679. And maybe you think

  680. you've got prayer sorted,

  681. that you would never pray

  682. with such twisted motives.

  683. Your life definitely

  684. isn't this messy.

  685. But if we're honest,

  686. certainly if I'm honest,

  687. my life can be pretty messy.

  688. Very often,

  689. my motives get twisted

  690. when I pray.

  691. As our hearts cry out,

  692. how wonderful then

  693. is this promise

  694. from Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  695. In the same way,

  696. the Spirit helps us

  697. in our weakness.

  698. We do not know

  699. what we ought to pray for,

  700. but the Spirit himself

  701. intercedes for us

  702. through wordless groans.

  703. when our motives stink,

  704. when we pray

  705. completely the wrong thing,

  706. when we don't know

  707. what to pray,

  708. and despite all of our mess,

  709. this is the utterly

  710. undeserved kindness

  711. of God to us.

  712. It's grace

  713. as God hears

  714. our deepest hearts cry.

  715. But not only does God hear,

  716. he also helps

  717. his messy people.

  718. in verse 31

  719. of chapter 29,

  720. right at the start

  721. of this competition,

  722. how is it that

  723. Leah is able

  724. to conceive?

  725. Not only does God

  726. see that Leah

  727. was not loved,

  728. but he also helps her,

  729. he enabled her

  730. as the language

  731. to conceive.

  732. And more than that,

  733. if you notice,

  734. who is that Leah

  735. gives birth to?

  736. In verse 34,

  737. she gives birth

  738. to a son called Levi,

  739. and in verse 35,

  740. to Judah.

  741. If you know anything

  742. about the subsequent history

  743. of the tribes of Israel,

  744. Levi was the forerunner

  745. to the priestly tribe,

  746. Judah was the forerunner

  747. to the kingly tribe.

  748. You see what God does?

  749. He takes Leah,

  750. the unloved

  751. and the unlovely,

  752. and he gets to work.

  753. And through her,

  754. he produces the priests

  755. and the kings

  756. of his people.

  757. And wasn't that way

  758. of working

  759. just exemplified

  760. in Jesus?

  761. When God became man,

  762. who did he go towards?

  763. Did he go towards

  764. the powerful?

  765. Did he go towards

  766. empire or kings?

  767. Did he go towards

  768. the religious elites?

  769. No, he relentlessly

  770. pursued and loved

  771. the unloved

  772. and the unlovely.

  773. The outcasts,

  774. the crippled,

  775. the sinners,

  776. he loved them.

  777. He had compassion on them.

  778. He heard them

  779. and he helped them.

  780. Can I just make

  781. a really quick

  782. and very specific application

  783. at this point?

  784. Just to those in the room

  785. who wish

  786. that they could be parents.

  787. Maybe you've been

  788. trying for years.

  789. Maybe you have tried

  790. and it didn't work out

  791. and those days

  792. are well behind you.

  793. Maybe you're single.

  794. Maybe you're attracted

  795. to people of the same sex.

  796. Maybe you suffer

  797. from a chronic illness.

  798. If that's you,

  799. if you desperately

  800. want a family

  801. and it isn't

  802. or it hasn't happened

  803. for you,

  804. let me firstly say

  805. how sorry I am.

  806. And let me say,

  807. please don't feel like

  808. you can't mourn that here

  809. just because it's something

  810. that we can't see.

  811. As a church,

  812. we want to share

  813. in each other's pain

  814. like that,

  815. that you would find

  816. a family here.

  817. And let me encourage you

  818. that God hears

  819. our cries in that.

  820. He doesn't say

  821. that you will definitely

  822. have children.

  823. He doesn't promise that.

  824. But he does have a plan

  825. and he does have

  826. a purpose for us

  827. and he does hear us

  828. and he does help us.

  829. God saw the unloved Leah

  830. and he saw

  831. the childless Rachel

  832. and he got to work.

  833. And God does continue

  834. to work in the world today.

  835. Just a little bit broader,

  836. if you're here this morning

  837. and you feel like

  838. you've got very little

  839. to offer,

  840. if you feel unloved

  841. or if you know

  842. that if anyone

  843. really knew you,

  844. they couldn't possibly

  845. love you,

  846. that you wouldn't possibly

  847. be welcome

  848. in a place like this,

  849. you need to know

  850. this morning,

  851. Jesus really does

  852. know you.

  853. And he knows

  854. exactly how you feel.

  855. And he also knows

  856. all the ways

  857. that you have rejected

  858. the God who created you.

  859. He knows the deepest

  860. and darkest cries

  861. and the deepest

  862. and darkest secrets

  863. of your heart.

  864. And yet, by grace,

  865. he loves you.

  866. He doesn't promise

  867. that that means

  868. you'll have a totally

  869. trouble-free life

  870. or get all the things

  871. that you want.

  872. But he does promise

  873. that he hears

  874. his messy people

  875. and he promises

  876. that he will help

  877. his messy people.

  878. He gives us everything

  879. that we need

  880. so that we might have

  881. the most wonderful gift

  882. of all,

  883. which is to know him.

  884. That is the totally

  885. undeserved kindness

  886. of our God.

  887. It's grace.

  888. And so just before we finish,

  889. let's go back

  890. to the original readers.

  891. this is what they needed

  892. to hear.

  893. As they stumbled about

  894. in the wilderness,

  895. convinced that they had

  896. got things really

  897. very badly wrong,

  898. they were sure

  899. that a return

  900. to the comfortable life

  901. of slavery in Egypt

  902. would be the solution.

  903. But Moses would say

  904. to them,

  905. see how God

  906. has been gracious to you.

  907. Look at your roots.

  908. If you've tuned out now,

  909. please tune back in now

  910. just for the last few minutes.

  911. This is really the key.

  912. See your roots

  913. and know

  914. that God established

  915. his people by grace

  916. in and through their mess.

  917. And so know

  918. that God will keep

  919. his people

  920. in and through

  921. their mess

  922. only by his grace

  923. because grace

  924. is the way in

  925. and grace is the way on.

  926. And especially tune in now

  927. because that remains true

  928. for the Christian.

  929. If you're here this morning

  930. and you wouldn't call yourself

  931. a Christian,

  932. this is right at the heart

  933. of it all,

  934. it's grace.

  935. God's utterly undeserved

  936. kindness to us

  937. and it is the way in.

  938. As humans,

  939. we need to recognize

  940. we are not perfect.

  941. That is true

  942. as we think about our roots

  943. but it's true of us today.

  944. We have not lived

  945. the way that our creator

  946. intended us to live.

  947. And the world

  948. that we live in

  949. is a mess

  950. and we contribute

  951. to that mess

  952. in so many ways

  953. we just can't avoid it.

  954. And actually

  955. there's also nothing

  956. we can do

  957. to clean it up.

  958. Truth is

  959. there are things

  960. that we've done,

  961. there are things

  962. that I've done

  963. that I know

  964. that I could never

  965. pay for.

  966. And so the only way

  967. to be accepted

  968. by this God

  969. is for someone else

  970. to pay that price

  971. on my behalf.

  972. And his grace

  973. to you and to me

  974. is Jesus

  975. paying that price

  976. on our behalf.

  977. That's the cross.

  978. Grace is the way in.

  979. But grace is also

  980. the way on.

  981. Right?

  982. Our roots,

  983. the bishop,

  984. Charlemagne,

  985. witch hunts and slavery,

  986. this has always been true.

  987. For God's people

  988. to keep on being

  989. God's people,

  990. for the Christian church

  991. to have continued at all

  992. despite all of the mess

  993. is only by his

  994. wonderful grace to us.

  995. Anything good

  996. that the Christian church

  997. has done over the years,

  998. anything good

  999. that we have done

  1000. here at Brunsfield

  1001. over the years,

  1002. that is not us.

  1003. It's only because

  1004. God has done it

  1005. by his grace

  1006. and because we are

  1007. privileged to be used

  1008. by him in that.

1009. It's true in the big picture

  1010. like that,

  1011. but it's also true

  1012. individually for us

  1013. as the world remains

  1014. a mess.

  1015. And again,

1016. as we continue to contribute

  1017. to that mess,

1018. the message has always been

  1019. that yes,

1020. grace is the way in,

1021. that Jesus died for you

  1022. and now you're a Christian,

1023. but the message is not

  1024. that you therefore need

1025. to start acting like it.

  1026. Instead,

  1027. the message is that

1028. grace is also the way on.

1029. That each and every day,

  1030. living in and contributing

  1031. to a messy world,

  1032. we continue to desperately

1033. need and rely on that grace

  1034. in Jesus.

  1035. Being a Christian doesn't mean

1036. that we've been made perfect,

1037. but it means that by his grace,

1038. we continue to grow towards him.

  1039. In Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

1040. Paul puts it like this,

1041. not that I have already

  1042. obtained all this

  1043. or have already arrived

  1044. at my goal,

  1045. but I press on

  1046. to take hold

  1047. of that

  1048. for which Christ Jesus

  1049. took hold of me.

1050. You see what he's saying?

  1051. It's not that he's already perfect,

  1052. he's on a journey.

  1053. He's straining toward

  1054. what is ahead.

1055. He's heading in the right direction.

  1056. This,

  1057. Paul says,

  1058. is what it means

1059. to be a mature Christian.

1060. Not that you are less sinful,

1061. though you are really growing

1062. in that sort of direction,

1063. but actually that you're more aware

  1064. of your sin.

  1065. I think it's true

  1066. in conversations

  1067. with some of you

  1068. who have been Christians

1069. for a lot longer than I have.

1070. The further on you get,

1071. the less sinful you actually are,

  1072. the more you grow.

  1073. And yet,

1074. the more sinful you actually feel.

  1075. And as you experience

  1076. that strange paradox,

1077. would you just let it drive you

  1078. back to the cross?

1079. For grace is the way in,

1080. but it is also the way on.

  1081. And just very practically,

1082. last thing as we finish,

1083. one thing that all of us can do,

  1084. what this means

  1085. is that this church

  1086. that we're part of,

1087. this family that we're part of,

  1088. is the one place

1089. where we should be able

  1090. to be most honest

  1091. about our sin.

  1092. because it is

  1093. and should be

  1094. the one place

  1095. where grace is readily

1096. and always available for it.

  1097. You know,

  1098. if a brother or a sister

  1099. at church tells you

1100. about some sin in their life,

  1101. what's the first thing

1102. that you're going to do?

1103. Do you immediately tell them

  1104. how foolish they are,

  1105. how stupid they've been?

  1106. Maybe more practically,

  1107. you're going to try

  1108. and find ways

1109. that you can help them

  1110. to make sure

1111. that this doesn't happen again.

  1112. There might actually be

1113. a place for both of those

  1114. in time,

  1115. but the first thing

1116. has got to be this.

1117. If someone comes to you

  1118. and says,

  1119. I've been messing up

  1120. in this way,

  1121. the first thing

1122. has got to be this.

  1123. Look to Jesus

  1124. because here is grace

  1125. for you.

  1126. He loves you

  1127. and we love you

  1128. because grace

  1129. is the way in,

  1130. but it is also

  1131. the way on.

  1132. These are your roots.

  1133. God establishes

  1134. his people by grace.

  1135. God keeps his people

  1136. by grace.

1137. It is the way in

1138. and it is the way on.

1139. We're going to sing together

1140. and so let me just invite

  1141. the band up

  1142. as we do that

1143. and as they come up,

  1144. let me pray.

  1145. Heavenly Father,

1146. we thank you so much

  1147. for your grace

  1148. to us in Jesus.

  1149. Lord,

  1150. we're so sorry

  1151. for the mess

  1152. of our lives

  1153. and the ways

  1154. that we contribute

  1155. to the mess

  1156. of the world.

  1157. Lord,

  1158. we're so sorry

  1159. for when we try

  1160. and do things

  1161. on our own steam,

  1162. try and clean up

  1163. our own act

  1164. and Lord,

1165. I pray that for each

  1166. of us this morning,

  1167. if nothing else,

  1168. we would know

  1169. that in our sin

  1170. there remains grace

  1171. for us in Jesus,

  1172. that in every area

  1173. of our lives

  1174. you would help us

  1175. to repent,

  1176. to turn to him,

1177. to look to the cross

  1178. and to experience

  1179. his grace,

  1180. your grace

  1181. for us in him.

  1182. in Jesus' name,

  1183. Amen.
