  1. Over the summer, I've been reading the autobiographies of two great football managers, Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

  2. As you would probably expect, they come across as men who are really driven,

  3. whose lives are dominated by their love of the game and by trying to succeed in it,

  4. and who have a huge self-confidence, who believe that if they work hard, if they look after their staff,

  5. if they plan well, then they'll be successful.

  6. Very self-reliant.

  7. I was particularly struck by one passage in Arsene Wenger's book.

  8. He wrote about how when he was growing up as a child in the Alsace region of France,

  9. he used to go along to the football matches of his local team clutching his prayer book,

  10. and he'd stand on the touchline and he'd be praying desperately that his team would win.

  11. And then he says,

  12. In later years, I replaced the prayer book with good players,

  13. and being well prepared for the likelihood of winning.

  14. Reason instead of faith.

  15. And it was that last phrase, reason instead of faith, that really struck me.

  16. Now, I wouldn't say it was appropriate for us to be praying about the results of football matches.

  17. But I think Arsene Wenger maybe is speaking wider than that.

  18. And if he is, then he reflects something I think is quite a common belief today.

  19. You can't rely on blind faith.

  20. You've got to rely on rational planning,

  21. on being able to do things for yourself,

  22. and on being in control.

  23. I hope most of us here, given we're in a church this morning,

  24. would recognise that faith and reason go together.

  25. That we don't throw our brains away when we come to trust in Jesus.

  26. But I think there's still a question a lot of the time

  27. of how much we should be depending entirely on God to do things for us,

  28. and how much we should be trying to do things for ourselves.

  29. So if you like, it's the kind of conflict between let go and let God,

  30. and the Lord helps those who help themselves.

  31. And I think that's what's at the heart of this passage we're looking at today.

  32. It's a question of how much is Jacob depending on God,

  33. and how much is he trying to do things by himself.

  34. Now at the end, having read the passage quite a number of times,

  35. I still can't quite make my mind up about Jacob.

  36. Was what he was doing really in faith,

  37. or was he trusting in himself and almost hedging his bets

  38. by praying in the middle?

  39. I'll leave you to come to your own judgments on that

  40. once we've been through the passage.

  41. But after we've done that, we will look more broadly.

  42. We'll try to find other answers from the Bible to this question.

  43. How much should we depend on prayer?

  44. How much should we be trying to work things out ourselves?

  45. So we're in Genesis 32, and if you remember the story of Jacob,

  46. some of you have been here every week, I'm sure, or most weeks,

  47. the story of Jacob starts in Canaan with his father Isaac

  48. and mother Rebekah and his brother Esau.

  49. And Jacob coerces Esau into giving up the birthright

  50. that was due to the first son.

  51. It was only a few minutes Esau was ahead of Jacob,

  52. but he was the first son, and he gave Jacob his birthright.

  53. And then Jacob tricked Isaac into giving him the father's blessing.

  54. And then he had to flee because Esau was out to kill him.

  55. And for the last few weeks, we've been thinking about the 20 years

  56. that he spent with his uncle Laban far away from his immediate family.

  57. Well, today he's come back, and he's come, in a sense, to face the music.

  58. He knows he's going to have to meet Esau,

  59. but he doesn't know what kind of response he's going to get.

  60. Is Esau still out to kill him,

  61. or is there a possibility that the two of them can be reconciled?

  62. As we go through this chapter,

  63. we see alternating Jacob interacting with God,

  64. and then Jacob trying to do things on his own,

  65. more interaction with God through the angels,

  66. Jacob trying to do things on his own,

  67. and then finally the decisive interaction with God,

  68. which we'll be looking at next Sunday.

  69. But there really is this tension in Jacob's mind, I think.

  70. I need to be saved from Esau.

  71. Do I do it myself, or do I rely on God?

  72. So we look at the first of the sections in the chapter.

  73. I've called it Jacob's protector,

  74. and if you've got it in front of you,

  75. that's the first couple of verses.

  76. Jacob comes back from Laban.

  77. He's on the border of Canaan, the promised land,

  78. and when he's there,

  79. he has a vision of a group of angels.

  80. Now, I think when we see this,

  81. we're supposed to think back to how Jacob had left Canaan

  82. in the first place when he was fleeing from Esau,

  83. and he came to a place he called Bethel,

  84. and there he had an encounter with God.

  85. So angels going up and down the ladder to heaven,

  86. and he received promises from God.

  87. Now, I think as Jacob comes back to the land,

  88. this is God saying,

  89. I am still with you.

  90. I made promises to you in the past,

  91. and I am still there to honor these promises.

  92. And so Jacob gives the place a name,

  93. which means two camps.

  94. There's his camp.

  95. He's come back with much more than he ever left with,

  96. but there's also God's camp.

  97. God is with him.

  98. God is there to be his protector.

  99. Good for us sometimes to be reminded of God's goodness

  100. and of God's presence.

  101. When we are facing difficult or disturbing situations,

  102. to be able to think back and to say,

  103. God was with me in the past.

  104. God is still with me now.

  105. Now, in the first book of Samuel, chapter 7,

  106. there's an incident where the Israelites are being attacked by the Philistines,

  107. and Samuel prays, and they are miraculously rescued.

  108. And Samuel sets up a stone at a place called Ebenezer.

  109. And he says,

  110. Thus far the Lord has helped us.

  111. And that stone that was set up there, I think,

  112. was a reminder to the people that God was good to them,

  113. that he was their God,

  114. and that he would be with them through the most difficult times.

  115. Good for us to have these reminders as well.

  116. Paul says in Romans 8,

  117. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  118. He who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us all,

  119. how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

  120. If our trust is in the Lord Jesus,

  121. then we have God's presence with us,

  122. and perhaps sometimes we need a reminder of that.

  123. Having got that reminder, Jacob kind of goes off on his own.

  124. He thinks, well, what can I do?

  125. What are the options for me to get back in favor with Esau?

  126. And so he thinks, well, I should make contact with them.

  127. And he sends him a bit of a groveling message, I think,

  128. talking about Esau as his lord, Jacob as his servant.

  129. Remember, they're brothers, twin brothers.

  130. And reminding him that Jacob has been a waste,

  131. not that he's been avoiding him, he says.

  132. And he's come back having left with nothing.

  133. He's come back with two wives, two concubines, 11 sons, a daughter,

  134. lots of servants, lots of cattle.

  135. He's quite a wealthy man.

  136. I think he's saying to Esau, well, actually, I don't need anything from you.

  137. I just want to make up with you.

  138. And he sends them off, and he's told that Esau is coming back,

  139. and he's got a huge company with him.

  140. He's bringing an army with him in Jacob's sight,

  141. and Jacob is terrified.

  142. What is Esau likely to do now?

  143. And Jacob, again, Jacob being the schemer he always was,

  144. he says, well, if I divide my group into two different camps,

  145. maybe remembering the two camps from verse 1,

  146. if one of them gets attacked and destroyed,

  147. then the other might be safe.

  148. And if Jacob's in behind, then he's hoping he'll survive either way.

  149. That's the kind of man he was,

  150. and still had elements of that, it appears, in him.

  151. Trying to do his thing.

  152. Trying to work things out for himself.

  153. But I think it's a bit more positive because Jacob prays.

  154. Sorry, I missed my point there.

  155. Jacob's plea to Esau.

  156. Then there's Jacob's prayer.

  157. Lots of peas this morning,

  158. but we're spending, I think, a little bit of while

  159. thinking about Jacob's prayer.

  160. This is the first prayer that we really read of Jacob in the Bible.

  161. He refers to God previously,

  162. but it's the first time we see him actually coming before God

  163. and praying to him.

  164. And the four verses from verse 9 to 12,

  165. I've got one heading for each.

  166. Verse 9, I've said, is Jacob's premise.

  167. The premise is the basis on which he thinks he's able to come to God

  168. and ask for things from him.

  169. A part of the premise is a promise.

  170. It's what God said to him when he left the land.

  171. And the other part of it is a reminder of God's dealings with his ancestors.

  172. Jacob, at this point, isn't able to say,

  173. God is my God.

  174. He says he's the God of Abraham, his grandfather.

  175. He's the God of Isaac, his father.

  176. Perhaps it was after the end of this chapter

  177. that Jacob would have been able to say

  178. that God was his God as well.

  179. But he did feel he had a premise for coming to God.

  180. Can I say, if we are Christians,

  181. if we are following the Lord Jesus today,

  182. we have a much stronger premise for coming to God.

  183. We come not because of any good in us,

  184. not because we deserve anything from God,

  185. but because through the Lord Jesus,

  186. our sins have been forgiven

  187. and we can come to God not just as our God,

  188. but as our heavenly father.

  189. We have a stronger basis for approaching God than Jacob did

  190. if we are trusting in Jesus.

  191. Verse 10, Jacob then looks to his past.

  192. He recognizes his own unworthiness,

  193. recognizes all the times he's tried to trick people

  194. and do things by his own strength.

  195. And he's recognized that despite that,

  196. despite everything he's done,

  197. that God has been with him and has blessed him.

  198. Again, if we know Jesus,

  199. good to recall the past and all that we've done wrong,

  200. not for the sake of dwelling on all our faults,

  201. but to recognize the grace of God that's in our lives

  202. and all that he has done for us through the Lord Jesus.

  203. Verse 11, we need to go fairly quickly.

  204. Verse 11,

  205. there's Jacob's petition.

  206. What really struck me about Jacob's petition

  207. is the three words in the middle,

  208. I am afraid.

  209. I am afraid.

  210. Isn't it good when we can come to God

  211. and recognize that we can be honest

  212. about how we're feeling?

  213. We don't have to come with flowery words

  214. and think that we need to approach God in a certain way

  215. before he will listen to us.

  216. If we will come to God and say exactly how we're feeling,

  217. he already knows,

  218. but he wants us to acknowledge that.

  219. That is the great basis for prayer

  220. and the basis on which Jacob can come and say,

  221. I'm afraid, I don't know what to do,

  222. but God can please you intervene in this situation.

  223. And then finally in verse 12,

  224. Jacob talks about God's promise

  225. and what God has said to him that he will do.

  226. God has promised both prosperity in terms of having lots of descendants

  227. and prosperity in terms of wealth.

  228. It's been partially accomplished so far,

  229. but Jacob clings to that promise.

  230. And like for us too,

  231. it's good to cling to God's promises.

  232. If we don't know what to pray in a situation,

  233. think about what the Bible says about something that's relevant,

  234. what God has promised to us

  235. and use that as part of your prayer.

  236. So there's a lot in Jacob's prayer that we can learn from.

  237. But then he appears to kind of destroy it a bit by what he does next.

  238. He's not prepared to leave it with God

  239. and to let God work in the situation.

  240. Jacob has to make another plan.

  241. And this plan is to flood Esau with gifts.

  242. If you add up all the numbers of all the animals that Jonathan read about,

  243. there are 550 different animals in five different groups.

  244. And the idea is that Jacob sends them out in these groups one by one

  245. and he seems to be more and more generous to Esau as he approaches.

  246. Also, maybe an element that if Esau has all these animals coming along with him,

  247. then he's not going to be in such a good shape to make a surprise attack on Jacob.

  248. And if Jacob thinks he's at all hostile,

  249. there might be a chance to escape.

  250. But this is very much Jacob back to his old scheming.

  251. And I find it quite difficult to think that having prayed like that,

  252. he would then be exercising faith in God by what he does here.

  253. He's being crafty, but does he need to be?

  254. But when we come on to see what happens when Jacob meets Esau,

  255. spoiler alert, it works out well.

  256. But it works out well, I think, because of what God does in Esau's heart

  257. more than what Jacob does to soften up his brother.

  258. But that's the story in Genesis.

  259. Jacob alternating between throwing some faith in God

  260. and depending on what he's doing himself.

  261. I think Jonathan's taking us through the last part of the chapter next week,

  262. which is Jacob's real encounter with God.

  263. But let's go back to the question that we started with.

  264. How much is it right for us to say,

  265. I just need to pray and everything will work out?

  266. And how much should we be planning and trying to work things out

  267. and acting upon it?

  268. Let me present you with four different scenarios,

  269. and I hope they'll help us to think through what the issues are.

  270. First thing I suggest is sometimes we just need to act.

  271. There's no question of what we should do,

  272. we just need to do it.

  273. When I go to bed, the first thing I do, or last thing I do rather,

  274. is I turn the keys in the locks.

  275. I don't pray to God that there won't be any burglars in the area tonight

  276. because my doors are open.

  277. I take sensible precautions to make sure my house is secure.

  278. If I have toothache, I don't just pray.

  279. I probably would pray about the pain that I'm suffering,

  280. but I don't just pray about it.

  281. I phone the dentist and I take some painkillers.

  282. And actually in these situations,

  283. what God expects is my common sense that he's given to me

  284. will tell me what to do,

  285. and the skills he's given to the dentist will help resolve the issue.

  286. Now if you're particularly worried about your security at home,

  287. or if I'm particularly anxious about going to the dentist,

  288. of course we should pray.

  289. God wants to hear all our prayers, all our anxieties.

  290. But in these situations,

  291. there's really no question what we should do.

  292. We should just do it.

  293. And do, as I said, perhaps in a prayerful way,

  294. and this wonderful verse from 1 Peter,

  295. cast all your anxieties on him

  296. because he cares for you.

  297. Okay, so that's the first situation,

  298. probably the most straightforward.

  299. The second, I think, is probably the most dangerous.

  300. This is situations where we have to make decisions,

  301. we have to do things,

  302. and we think,

  303. yes, I know what to do here.

  304. I can deal with this.

  305. And maybe in thinking that,

  306. we don't really think,

  307. well, I should be putting it before God,

  308. I should be speaking his guidance.

  309. It's only when things go wrong

  310. that we suddenly think,

  311. well, perhaps I should pray about it.

  312. If I stood up this morning and said to you,

  313. I haven't read the passage for today,

  314. but I'm going to pray that God will give me

  315. the right words to say,

  316. I suspect you wouldn't be very impressed.

  317. But actually, it would be worse

  318. if I came along

  319. and I felt,

  320. I've got a wonderful sermon,

  321. I'm really going to impress people.

  322. And I was totally depending on myself

  323. and not on God.

  324. No prayer,

  325. no reliance on God.

  326. And if God isn't directing my thoughts

  327. as I prepare

  328. and working in all our hearts

  329. as his word comes to us,

  330. then we're wasting our time being here.

  331. And I think there are lots of situations

  332. where we might be tempted

  333. to just do things ourselves,

  334. to make decisions on our own,

  335. when actually what we really should be doing

  336. is bringing them to God in prayer.

  337. And that's not always the first thing

  338. that comes to mind,

  339. but actually it is almost always

  340. the most important thing.

  341. Jacob, after all these years away,

  342. as he had been trying to do things

  343. in his own strength,

  344. and he's finally having to come back

  345. to face the music,

  346. he realizes at least to some extent

  347. that the most important thing

  348. is that he depends on God

  349. and brings his prayer to him.

  350. So for us,

  351. when we're in situations

  352. where we might think initially,

  353. yes, I know what to do here,

  354. let's just pause

  355. and say, well,

  356. let's seek the Lord's guidance on this.

  357. Let's try and do it

  358. in his way.

  359. Maybe remember this verse from Proverbs,

  360. Proverbs chapter 3,

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  361. trust in the Lord with all your heart

  362. and lean not on your own understanding.

  363. Going our way,

  364. things are liable to go wrong

  365. and they won't work out the way we expect.

  366. If we go God's way,

  367. he will guide us and help us.

  368. So that's situation two.

  369. Situation three,

  370. in some ways,

  371. is almost the opposite.

  372. So sometimes we get things

  373. that come into our lives

  374. and we think,

  375. what can I possibly do about this?

  376. And perhaps we pray about it,

  377. but we really struggle

  378. with the doing part of it.

  379. During the last week,

  380. I got a phone call

  381. from someone who said

  382. that some of my relatives

  383. were in a real crisis situation.

  384. They felt I needed a family member involved.

  385. And I just thought,

  386. well, what could I possibly do?

  387. So I could pray

  388. and I sent a WhatsApp to my sisters

  389. to ask them to pray as well.

  390. But then I had to think

  391. about the situation,

  392. think what the priorities were,

  393. and any way I could help.

  394. In the end,

  395. my main contribution

  396. was connecting people together

  397. who were much better placed

  398. on the ground to do it

  399. than I was.

  400. But we do get quite a lot

  401. of situations like that,

  402. I think,

  403. where something comes up

  404. and we think,

  405. I just don't know

  406. what to do

  407. in this situation.

  408. I'm just totally struggling

  409. and perhaps we pray about it.

  410. But also in these situations,

  411. perhaps God is saying to us,

  412. you need to act,

  413. you need to do something.

  414. When Paul was on

  415. his second missionary journey

  416. and going with Silas

  417. and others,

  418. he went and visited

  419. the churches

  420. he'd established

  421. on the first missionary journey

  422. and then they weren't sure

  423. what to do next.

  424. So what do you do?

  425. Well, they could pray

  426. and I'm sure they did pray.

  427. But they also tried

  428. to explore where God

  429. wanted them to go.

  430. They thought,

  431. we'll go north to Asia Minor.

  432. We're in Turkey,

  433. basically.

  434. We're going north

  435. within Turkey

  436. and the Holy Spirit

  437. prevented them.

  438. They thought,

  439. well, we'll go to Bithynia

  440. and see if we can serve God there.

  441. And again,

  442. it says the Holy Spirit

  443. closed the door.

  444. And eventually,

  445. they ended up going

  446. right the way along west

  447. through Turkey

  448. to the coast at Troas

  449. and there,

  450. Paul had a vision

  451. of a man from Macedonia

  452. saying,

  453. come over and help us.

  454. And that was how

  455. the gospel reached Europe.

  456. I think the thing

  457. they must have thought

  458. when they were looking

  459. back on it

  460. was we didn't know

  461. what to do.

  462. But we knew

  463. we needed to try

  464. and reach out

  465. with the gospel,

  466. reach to others

  467. and in the end,

  468. it was God

  469. who was directing us west.

  470. We were thinking

  471. of going north

  472. and God kept saying,

  473. no, go on

  474. and eventually,

  475. we went west

  476. and got to Europe.

  477. And again,

  478. there will be many situations

  479. where we say,

  480. well, what can I do?

  481. What is the best thing

  482. to do?

  483. And we just need

  484. to rely on God's guidance.

  485. And it doesn't always

  486. come apparent immediately

  487. as it didn't for Paul

  488. and his companions,

  489. but God knows

  490. what's happening.

  491. God knows what's best.

  492. And if we proceed

  493. trusting in him,

  494. then he will guide us.

  495. So here's the verse

  496. for this one.

  497. It's from James.

  498. It says,

  499. if any of you lacks wisdom,

  500. you should ask God

  501. who gives generously

  502. to all

  503. without finding fault

  504. and it will be

  505. given to you.

  506. We need to trust God

  507. in the situations

  508. where we don't know

  509. what to do,

  510. that he will guide us

  511. and it may be

  512. a step at a time

  513. rather than everything

  514. becoming clear

  515. at once.

  516. And then finally,

  517. there are situations

  518. where there is nothing

  519. we can do

  520. but pray

  521. and rely on God.

  522. when actually

  523. we really are helpless

  524. and we can only pray

  525. and know that God

  526. is in control

  527. of everything.

  528. That comes up,

  529. I guess,

  530. in situations

  531. which we see

  532. in the news

  533. in our world,

  534. in Ukraine

  535. or in Yemen,

  536. what's been happening

  537. in Hawaii

  538. and other things

  539. that are going on

  540. that we look and say

  541. this is terrible

  542. and we just have to pray

  543. and depend on God

  544. who knows best

  545. to do his work.

  546. And one specific situation

  547. where that is definitely true

  548. is when we think about

  549. our relationship

  550. with God.

  551. We are in no position

  552. ourselves

  553. to come to God

  554. and to say

  555. we have anything

  556. that deserves

  557. his attention.

  558. We've all gone wrong,

  559. we've all sinned

  560. in the language

  561. of the Bible,

  562. we've all been far away

  563. from God

  564. and there is nothing

  565. in ourselves

  566. we can do about it.

  567. However hard we try,

  568. however religious

  569. we may try to be,

  570. there is nothing

  571. that we can do

  572. that is going to restore

  573. that relationship.

  574. And the only way

  575. back to God

  576. is through Jesus.

  577. Through Jesus dying

  578. on the cross,

  579. taking the punishment

  580. for our sins

  581. and then rising again

  582. and we can put

  583. our trust in him

  584. and know that

  585. we will be forgiven.

  586. Nothing we can do

  587. apart from pray

  588. and accept

  589. the forgiveness

  590. that is on offer

  591. when we recognize

  592. our sins

  593. and trust

  594. in Jesus.

  595. You'll probably be

  596. familiar with this verse

  597. from Ephesians

  598. if it comes up,

  599. there it is,

  600. it is by grace

  601. you have been saved

  602. through faith.

  603. This is not of yourselves,

  604. it is the gift of God,

  605. not of works

  606. so that no one

  607. can boast.

  608. Let's all make sure

  609. we understand that

  610. and have applied it

  611. this morning

  612. that we need Jesus

  613. as our Savior,

  614. that there's no other way

  615. back to God.

  616. Let's finish with a story

  617. about a spider's web

  618. and it's not going to be

  619. about Robert the Bruce.

  620. It's about a man

  621. called Frederick Nolan.

  622. Frederick Nolan

  623. was a Christian

  624. who was living

  625. in North Africa

  626. and for whatever reason

  627. he had enemies

  628. who were pursuing him.

  629. They were hot on his tail,

  630. he was on his own

  631. and he knew

  632. that if he got caught

  633. he would be killed.

  634. And he was almost exhausted,

  635. he was at the end

  636. of himself

  637. when he came to a cave

  638. and he thought

  639. well at least I can make

  640. some kind of effort,

  641. I'll go and I'll hide

  642. in this cave,

  643. I'm sure my pursuers

  644. will get me

  645. but at least I've done

  646. my best

  647. and I know that he went in

  648. and he prayed.

  649. You could hear the pursuers

  650. coming closer

  651. but as he heard them

  652. he also saw

  653. that there was a spider

  654. that was building

  655. its web

  656. at the entrance

  657. to the cave.

  658. That was a bit

  659. of a distraction for him,

  660. didn't think very much

  661. of it

  662. but the spider

  663. was there

  664. and it was building

  665. its web.

  666. Then the pursuers came

  667. and they were outside

  668. the cave

  669. and they said

  670. he can't be in there,

  671. there's a spider's web,

  672. if he had gone in

  673. he would have destroyed

  674. the web

  675. and they went on

  676. and he managed

  677. to escape.

  678. They later said this,

  679. where God is,

  680. a web is like a wall.

  681. Where God is not,

  682. a wall is like a web.

  683. In other words,

  684. if we try to do things

  685. just by our own efforts,

  686. if we do the best we can

  687. in everything,

  688. it's like a spider's web

  689. that can easily be destroyed

  690. and that doesn't give us

  691. any protection.

  692. If we realize

  693. that we are weak,

  694. that we need God's help

  695. in every aspect

  696. of our lives,

  697. even though we may feel

  698. we're a bit like

  699. a spider's web

  700. and there's nothing

  701. that we can do

  702. that's productive.

  703. With God,

  704. says Frederick Nolan,

  705. it's like we've got a wall

  706. because God is so much stronger

  707. and God can be with us

  708. and protect us

  709. in every situation.

  710. That was a lesson

  711. that Jacob needed

  712. to learn.

  713. He was getting there,

  714. I think,

  715. in today's passage.

  716. I'm not sure he's quite

  717. got there yet.

  718. It's a lesson we too

  719. need to apply in our lives.

  720. If we try to do things

  721. in our own strength,

  722. we will fail ultimately.

  723. If we do it in God's strength

  724. and trusting in Jesus,

  725. we can know

  726. we have salvation

  727. and we have eternal life

  728. and we can also experience

  729. God's help

  730. and God's guidance

  731. in all the difficulties

  732. of life.

  733. If you're in a difficult

  734. situation today,

  735. you don't know what to do.

  736. Pray about it.

  737. Talk to some Christian friends

  738. you can trust

  739. and they can pray with you

  740. and perhaps can help

  741. give you spiritual guidance.

  742. If you've not yet come

  743. to put your trust

  744. in the Lord Jesus,

  745. recognize today

  746. that without him,

  747. you can never be forgiven.

  748. With him,

  749. your sins can be forgiven.

  750. You can have God

  751. as your heavenly Father.

  752. Let's join together in prayer.

  753. Father,

  754. Father,

  755. we thank you

  756. for the account

  757. of Jacob's life

  758. that we've been reading.

  759. Thank you.

  760. There are so many lessons

  761. we can learn

  762. not just from Jacob's

  763. good things

  764. but from his failures.

  765. And thank you

  766. for the reminder

  767. that we need you

  768. in our situation.

  769. As Jacob prayed

  770. that we are afraid often,

  771. we don't know what to do

  772. and we need you

  773. to intervene.

  774. Help us to trust in you

  775. but help us also

  776. when you would want us

  777. to act,

  778. when you would want

  779. to guide us

  780. in the right way.

  781. Help us to be obedient

  782. in that

  783. and to do the appropriate things

  784. following you

  785. and living for Jesus.

  786. Help us above all

  787. to have our trust

  788. in the Lord Jesus

  789. and to seek to follow him.

  790. We give you our thanks

  791. for our time today.

  792. We commit ourselves

  793. to you now

  794. in Jesus' name.

  795. Amen.
