  1. So here's a British actor and presenter of the TV quiz show QI, which many of you I'm sure will watch, Stephen Fry, speaking about why he doesn't believe in the God of the Bible.

  2. He says this, I wonder if this is where you're at today.

  3. He said, in an interview with an Irish TV channel, why should I respect a capricious, mean-minded, stupid God who creates a world which is so full of injustice and pain?

  4. Now that is a philosophically valid and an emotionally honest question.

  5. And it's one we're going to be thinking about today as we get into this chapter of the Bible.

  6. Now this chapter, if you scan your eyes over it, it is 31 verses long.

  7. But I guarantee that every single one of us within two verses of reading this together are going to have the same question in mind.

  8. And it's this.

  9. What on earth is something like this doing in the Bible?

  10. Because this is a horrendous story of the rape of a young woman.

  11. And flowing from that, the harrowing account of revenge and bloodshed.

  12. Now if the British Board of Film Classification were tasked with rating this, they would, without shadow of a doubt, go for 18 plus.

  13. So here's the question I've been asking myself for the last number of weeks knowing that this is coming.

  14. And asking myself as I've been prepping this series in Genesis.

  15. Why don't we just skip it?

  16. Now two reasons why we go towards this.

  17. And here's number one.

  18. It's a conviction.

  19. It's a conviction that all scripture is God breathed.

  20. Right?

  21. We are a church that loves its 316s.

  22. We love John 316.

  23. How God desires all people to be saved.

  24. We love 1 Timothy, sorry 2 Timothy 316.

  25. That all scripture is God breathed.

  26. We're a church who loves its 316s.

  27. Meaning that with chapter 34, it's not like the Bible translators dropped the ball with this one.

  28. No, every single verse in the Bible is there because God wanted it there.

  29. The first one is a conviction.

  30. The second one is an experience.

  31. Having done this, worked in this church for 11 years, here's what I know to be true.

  32. That so often God does the deepest work in our hearts when we go to what we wrestle with the hardest parts of his word.

  33. Now some of us will read this as it were and we will read this from the armchair.

  34. Right?

  35. We will be thinking exactly what Stephen Fry was saying.

  36. And if that's you here today, if you're wondering, and surely this just proves the invalidity of the Christian faith,

  37. then here's the question I want to ask you to think about as we read this together in just a few minutes time.

  38. Do you recognize the world of Genesis 34?

  39. And the answer is, it's our world.

  40. Right?

  41. It's our world where it was discovered this week that Andrew Tate's been running a WhatsApp group aimed at grooming women.

  42. It's our world where as of this week I now find myself in a street WhatsApp group because one of our neighbors just up the road was broken into and everyone was kind of rallying together to see if we could get some CCTV of what footage of what actually went on.

  43. This is our world.

  44. This is our world.

  45. But here's where Christians respectfully disagree.

  46. And I'll just put it up there again with the comments of Stephen Fry.

  47. Yes, God created the world.

  48. But Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 tell us that God created a perfect world.

  49. In fact, it's only as Adam and Eve defy their creator, something that human beings have done ever since,

  50. that from Genesis 3 onward as sin enters and spoils God's perfect world,

  51. that we begin to get words in the human story.

  52. We begin to get words like shame and we begin to get words like death and we begin to get words like murder.

  53. And the thing is to see that those words were not on the scene in Genesis 1 and Genesis 2.

  54. Here is life as we know it.

  55. And this is a Bible phrase that people use worth thinking about.

  56. Here is life as we know it, east of Eden.

  57. East in the Bible is symbolic of just moving away from God.

  58. So in our passage today, if you come with me to chapter 34, right, we meet this young girl called Dina.

  59. And we are quickly introduced to the man who violated her at verse 2.

  60. His name is Shechem.

  61. Now notice what we're told about him.

  62. We are told, do you notice, and none of this is wasted, that he's a young prince of the land.

  63. Now what we have to understand is that in this guy's world, might is right.

  64. He gets what he wants.

  65. And what he wants in this moment is that he thinks he has a right to Dina's body.

  66. Hear it in his verse at verse 4, right?

  67. What does he say?

  68. Dad, and hear him speak.

  69. Get me this girl to be my wife.

  70. And this is par for the course in Canaan.

  71. We've got to understand that this crime is not making the headlines on the Canaan 6 o'clock news.

  72. As far as Canaan is concerned, this is nothing.

  73. But here is the God of perfect justice saying about this young woman,

  74. this human being who he made wonderfully in his image.

  75. Here is he here declaring that I see you.

  76. And I see what happened.

  77. And it's worth parking that thought for where we're going to end this morning.

  78. God is declaring here that I see you.

  79. Nothing escapes the attention of the three times holy, all-seeing God.

  80. Others of us will be reading this, not so much from the armchair,

  81. but I am so aware we will be heartbreakingly reading this from the hospital bed.

  82. Sexual crime, revenge, this is a raw part of your life story.

  83. And hear me say that I am so deeply sorry

  84. that that's been your experience.

  85. And I desperately want you to hold on

  86. and see the tender heart of Jesus for you.

  87. So what on earth is something that they're doing in the Bible?

  88. Well, here's the key, I think, that unlocks the purpose of this chapter.

  89. Okay?

  90. See in chapter 34 who isn't mentioned.

  91. Scan your eye over it.

  92. Who is not mentioned in this chapter?

  93. God's not mentioned in this chapter.

  94. Yeah?

  95. Not once in 31 verses.

  96. As if the writer is saying,

  97. here is what the anti-God,

  98. we will do what we think is right,

  99. human heart is capable of.

  100. And also see who is mentioned in this chapter.

  101. And there's a lot of people mentioned,

  102. but the camera zones in on one,

  103. is Jacob.

  104. And as we'll see as we read this through now,

  105. this man called Jacob is pathetically passive.

  106. See if, here's the challenge as we read it through.

  107. See if you can spot the ways

  108. that Jacob so terribly fails in this chapter.

  109. Come and read this with me and let's see

  110. and hear from our God this morning.

  111. Verse one.

  112. Now Dina, the daughter Leah had born to Jacob,

  113. went out to visit the woman of the land.

  114. When Shechem, son of Hamor, the Hivite,

  115. the ruler of that area,

  116. saw her,

  117. he took her and raped her.

  118. His heart was drawn to Dina, daughter of Jacob.

  119. He loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.

  120. And Shechem said to his father,

  121. Hamor, get me this girl as my wife.

  122. When Jacob heard that his daughter Dina had been defiled,

  123. his sons were in the fields with his livestock.

  124. So he did nothing about it until they came home.

  125. Then Shechem's father, Hamor,

  126. went out to talk with Jacob.

  127. Meanwhile, Jacob's sons had come in from the fields

  128. as soon as they'd heard what had happened.

  129. They were shocked and furious

  130. because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in Israel

  131. by sleeping with Jacob's daughter,

  132. a thing that should not be done.

  133. But Hamor said to them,

  134. my son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter.

  135. Please give her to him as his wife.

  136. Intermarry with us,

  137. give us your daughters

  138. and take our daughters for yourselves.

  139. You can settle among us.

  140. The land is open to you.

  141. Live in it, trade in it

  142. and acquire property in it.

  143. Then Shechem said to Dina's father and brothers,

  144. let me find favor in your eyes

  145. and I will give you whatever you ask.

  146. Make the price for the bride

  147. and the gift I am to bring as great as you like

  148. and I'll pay whatever you ask me.

  149. Only give me the young woman as my wife.

  150. Because their sister Dina had been defiled,

  151. Jacob's sons replied deceitfully

  152. as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.

  153. They said to them,

  154. we can't do such a thing.

  155. We can't give our sister to a man

  156. who's not circumcised.

  157. That would be a disgrace to us.

  158. We will enter into an agreement with you

  159. on one condition only,

  160. that you become like us

  161. by circumcising all your males.

  162. Then we will give you our daughters

  163. and take your daughters for ourselves.

  164. We'll settle among you

  165. and become one people with you.

  166. But if you will not agree to be circumcised,

  167. we'll take our sister and go.

  168. Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.

  169. The young man who was the most honoured

  170. of all his father's family

  171. lost no time in doing what they said

  172. because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter.

  173. So Hamor and his son Shechem

  174. went to the gate of their city

  175. to speak to the men of their city.

  176. These men are friendly toward us, they said.

  177. Let them live in our land and trade in it.

  178. The land is plenty of room for them.

  179. We can marry their daughters

  180. and they can marry ours.

  181. But the men will agree to live with us

  182. as one people only in the condition

  183. that our males be circumcised

  184. as they themselves are.

  185. Won't their livestock, their property

  186. and all their other animals become ours?

  187. So let us agree to their terms

  188. and they will settle among us.

  189. All the men who went out of the city gate

  190. agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem

  191. and every male in the city was circumcised.

  192. Three days later, while all of them were still in pain,

  193. two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi,

  194. Dina's brothers,

  195. took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city,

  196. killing every male.

  197. They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword

  198. and took Dina from Shechem's house and left.

  199. The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies

  200. and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.

  201. They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys

  202. and everything else of theirs in the city

  203. and out in the fields.

  204. They carried off all their wealth

  205. and all their women and children,

  206. taking as plunder everything in their houses.

  207. Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi,

  208. you've brought trouble on me

  209. by making me obnoxious to the Canaanites

  210. and the Perizzites, the people living in this land.

  211. We are few in number

  212. and if they join forces against me and attack me,

  213. I and my household will be destroyed.

  214. But they replied,

  215. should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?

  216. Now friends, we're going to rattle through

  217. four ways that Jacob fails here.

  218. Here's the first of these.

  219. Did you notice his lack of love for his daughter?

  220. Now, when Dina, daughter of Leah,

  221. was introduced to us,

  222. back at verse 21 of chapter 30,

  223. you get the sense

  224. that she is simply an inconvenient footnote

  225. in Jacob's life.

  226. Right, what is she doing at verse one?

  227. She is innocently wandering the streets

  228. of this strange new place

  229. where the family have found themselves called Canaan

  230. and she's trying to see,

  231. you see it at verse one,

  232. the woman of the land.

  233. Now, this is kind of like my girl Chloe

  234. getting on the 37 bus outside our house

  235. and making her way into town on Saturday night

  236. because all her friends are talking about

  237. how much fun there is to be had

  238. and she wants to see what all the fuss is about

  239. and all the time I'm sitting there in the armchair

  240. watching her go, not caring.

  241. So rather than nurturing and protecting her

  242. and raising her to know, love and serve the Lord

  243. who has protected him

  244. and led him so graciously,

  245. Jacob lets Dina just walk straight out into danger.

  246. At best he didn't know,

  247. at worst he didn't care.

  248. He horrendously fails to protect his daughter

  249. in this situation.

  250. Here's the second one.

  251. It's his lack of response to the tragedy.

  252. See verse five.

  253. He hears about what's happened

  254. and rather than weeping and mourning,

  255. which is fully what we would expect him to do,

  256. what does he do?

  257. He holds his peace.

  258. Which you've got to say is really strange, is it not?

  259. In fact, it's Hamor, the father of Shechem,

  260. who comes toward Jacob and initiates the dialogue here.

  261. And the author seems to be shocked

  262. that this is Jacob's response.

  263. I think that's why we're told that his sons get angry.

  264. I think it's why we're told that such a thing

  265. should not be done in Israel.

  266. The author's trying to tell us,

  267. Jacob, what are you doing?

  268. The third way he fails is his lack of leadership

  269. in the aftermath.

  270. Not only does he entertain the speech from Hamor

  271. from verse eight about intermarrying,

  272. a thing that God has told his people not to do,

  273. the heart behind that being that because

  274. if you intertwine your lives with theirs,

  275. worshiping the gods of the Canaanites,

  276. you will gradually drift to just becoming just like them.

  277. And I think that's one of the big lessons

  278. for the original readers here.

  279. Jacob lets his son hatch this deceitful plan

  280. to do them over.

  281. In fact, do you notice how they weaponize

  282. the one thing that God has said

  283. was physically meant to show that they were God's people

  284. set apart for him,

  285. distinct, loved, chosen.

  286. What do they manipulate?

  287. Circumcision.

  288. And this only goes to show just how far from the Lord

  289. they have wandered in their own hearts.

  290. And I think that's the tragedy here.

  291. This is God's people who are in the frame here.

  292. Now, if there's anyone who knows

  293. the catastrophic effects of lying and deceit

  294. and how it will always come back to haunt you,

  295. it's Jacob.

  296. And yet, do you see how he, as a father,

  297. he fails to say absolutely anything

  298. to firstly his daughter

  299. and then secondly his sons.

  300. Fourth way he fails is in his lack of rebuke

  301. for the revenge.

  302. Right?

  303. So Simeon and Levi,

  304. notice that those guys are named there.

  305. They are Dina's brothers.

  306. Leah's their mother.

  307. They are set in revenge.

  308. And I think verses 25 to 29

  309. are written to show us that what they do,

  310. and did you pick this up as we read it through,

  311. what they do goes so far beyond

  312. what we might possibly understand

  313. as being justice.

  314. They just go so over the top

  315. in terms of what they do.

  316. And I think this is maybe just understanding

  317. the Bible story,

  318. that God had enshrined in Israelite society

  319. this law,

  320. that it was an eye for an eye

  321. and a tooth for a tooth.

  322. Now, I'd imagine most people in our world,

  323. because we use that phrase,

  324. have heard of that concept.

  325. And I remember for years thinking to myself,

  326. well, surely that just encourages things like this.

  327. Does that not encourage you to take matters

  328. into your own hands?

  329. And then I suddenly read it in the context.

  330. And it's written to ensure that justice is done

  331. in the society,

  332. particularly for the oppressed

  333. who cannot get justice on their own.

  334. But more than that,

  335. as well as that,

  336. it caps it.

  337. As if to say,

  338. justice will be done,

  339. but it will be done

  340. on equal terms.

  341. And it means that vendettas like this

  342. that go so far above

  343. the thing that's being capped

  344. just should not happen

  345. in Israelite society.

  346. But rather than scolding his sons

  347. for their utter wrong,

  348. do you see how Jacob is thinking primarily

  349. about the impact

  350. that this is going to have on them?

  351. Did you pick that up

  352. as we read it through?

  353. Notice the repetition there

  354. at the end

  355. of the word I

  356. or me.

  357. Do you see it?

  358. You've brought trouble on me.

  359. You've made me stink

  360. in the sight of my neighbours.

  361. You're going to bring trouble

  362. on my family.

  363. I'm worried that they will attack me.

  364. It's me.

  365. Me, me, me.

  366. All the way through here.

  367. Who's he thinking about

  368. all the way through?

  369. He's thinking about himself.

  370. And you bring those four things

  371. all together

  372. and do you see

  373. how in this account

  374. Jacob is pathetically passive?

  375. Now you think back

  376. to what we learned last week

  377. as we were in chapter 33

  378. and you've got to see

  379. I kind of skipped out of here

  380. last week thinking

  381. this is really good.

  382. In the context of Genesis

  383. maybe you were optimistically

  384. thinking that maybe

  385. Jacob is the saviour

  386. that God said

  387. he'd send

  388. to save us

  389. to save his people

  390. from their

  391. east of Eden lives.

  392. The promised serpent crusher

  393. of Genesis 3

  394. maybe it's Jacob.

  395. Well that dream collapses

  396. like a house of cards

  397. in this chapter.

  398. But more than that

  399. who is Jacob

  400. in this chapter

  401. in actual fact

  402. like?

  403. I've never seen this before

  404. until studying it this week.

  405. Who does he remind you of?

  406. He's not the serpent crusher

  407. is he?

  408. No we see

  409. we see him

  410. failing to care

  411. as a father

  412. and I think

  413. this really should be

  414. a lesson to us dads

  415. in here.

  416. We see him

  417. sitting silently

  418. in the background

  419. failing to lead.

  420. presumably he's an earshot

  421. of all these conversations.

  422. We see him

  423. blaming others

  424. failing to take responsibility.

  425. We can almost hear him

  426. say at the end there

  427. our God

  428. is these sons

  429. who you've given me

  430. who are the problem.

  431. Who does he remind you of?

  432. He's just like

  433. Adam.

  434. Isn't he?

  435. He is just

  436. like

  437. Adam.

  438. He is not

  439. the serpent crusher

  440. and so you've got to ask yourselves

  441. let's come back to this question

  442. what on earth

  443. is something like this

  444. doing

  445. in the Bible?

  446. As we see this man

  447. who fails in so many ways

  448. and who is

  449. pathetically passive

  450. I take it

  451. partly

  452. that one of the reasons

  453. is that we would read this

  454. and it would make us long

  455. for someone to come

  456. from Jacob's line

  457. who would save us

  458. by being everything

  459. that Jacob

  460. and every single character

  461. in this

  462. is not.

  463. If Jacob is

  464. pathetically passive

  465. dear friends

  466. we have to see

  467. that our longing here

  468. is that someone would come

  469. who is so attractively active

  470. to save us

  471. and step into that

  472. Genesis longing

  473. comes Jesus.

  474. Now contrast him

  475. with every single character

  476. in this chapter

  477. as it were

  478. every male

  479. in this chapter

  480. contrast Shechem

  481. the prince of the land

  482. who abused

  483. his position

  484. to get what he wanted

  485. contrast him

  486. with Jesus

  487. and how is he described?

  488. What kind of prince is he?

  489. He is the prince of peace

  490. who stepped into our

  491. east of Eden world

  492. and who used his power

  493. not to be served

  494. but to serve

  495. and to give his life

  496. as a ransom for many.

  497. Contrast Levi and Simeon here

  498. brimming with anger and rage

  499. going to do whatever it takes

  500. to see that justice is done

  501. and more

  502. contrast them

  503. with Jesus

  504. who both said

  505. and personified

  506. a love

  507. for

  508. your

  509. enemies

  510. and contrast

  511. Jacob

  512. who failed his daughter

  513. in so many ways

  514. at this point

  515. contrast him

  516. with Jesus

  517. who came

  518. to win for himself

  519. and make

  520. sons and daughters

  521. of the living God.

  522. Now can I just take you

  523. to one place

  524. as we begin

  525. to wrap this up

  526. that I love

  527. seeing Jesus

  528. in action

  529. and if you've got a Bible

  530. turn with me here

  531. and you will see him

  532. in all his beauty.

  533. Here he is in

  534. Mark chapter 5.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  535. Oh this is one of my

  536. favorite stories

  537. in the Bible

  538. because you see

  539. both the compassion

  540. and the power of Jesus

  541. on full display.

  542. the context of the story

  543. Mark chapter 5

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  544. as you're turning there

  545. this man called

  546. Jairus

  547. has desperately

  548. summoned Jesus

  549. to come and heal

  550. his dying

  551. 12 year old

  552. daughter.

  553. And as Jesus

  554. is on the way

  555. there

  556. out of nowhere

  557. into this scene

  558. comes this

  559. woman

  560. and we're given

  561. details about this

  562. woman

  563. right?

  564. she's been bleeding

  565. for 12 years.

  566. She's been to doctor

  567. after doctor

  568. trying to get better

  569. and in this day

  570. we need to understand

  571. that you'd get

  572. as many good ones

  573. as you would

  574. bad ones

  575. because witch doctors

  576. and the likes

  577. are prevalent

  578. in that day

  579. who make a living

  580. from fleecing people.

  581. Perhaps that's evidence

  582. in the third fact

  583. that we're given

  584. about her

  585. that she's spent

  586. all that she has

  587. trying to get better

  588. all that she has

  589. but she's only

  590. gotten worse.

  591. So step into

  592. Jesus' world

  593. this woman

  594. who may well

  595. have been

  596. taken advantage of

  597. who would

  598. certainly be

  599. accustomed to

  600. humiliation

  601. and because of

  602. her condition

  603. she would certainly

  604. know what it is

  605. to be

  606. an outcast.

  607. Here is a woman

  608. on the canvas

  609. of life

  610. and in desperation

  611. she reaches out

  612. and touches

  613. Jesus' robe

  614. and I love that.

  615. I love her desperation

  616. but I love

  617. what Jesus does.

  618. What does Jesus do?

  619. He doesn't just

  620. walk on by.

  621. He stops

  622. as if to say

  623. I see you.

  624. I see you.

  625. I know.

  626. And recognizing

  627. her faith

  628. he calls her

  629. and I've always thought

  630. this was really strange

  631. he calls her

  632. daughter.

  633. Always thought

  634. that was

  635. really weird

  636. as I read it through

  637. but what if

  638. and this has recurred

  639. to me recently

  640. what if Mark

  641. has intertwined

  642. these two accounts

  643. of people

  644. one a 12 year old

  645. daughter

  646. one a woman

  647. who's been suffering

  648. for 12 years

  649. and he's intertwined

  650. these accounts

  651. to make to us

  652. the point

  653. that just

  654. how

  655. Jairus

  656. feels

  657. about

  658. his daughter

  659. how much

  660. more then

  661. and in the same

  662. way

  663. does Jesus

  664. feel

  665. and now

  666. relates to

  667. this woman

  668. as daughter

  669. you know

  670. Sam Albury

  671. I heard him

  672. recently talk

  673. about becoming

  674. a Christian

  675. he said

  676. he came to

  677. Christianity

  678. for the

  679. forgiveness

  680. but he stayed

  681. in Christianity

  682. for Jesus

  683. and this

  684. account of him

  685. here

  686. it is

  687. wonderful

  688. and what makes

  689. this more than

  690. nice words

  691. what makes this

  692. better than

  693. sentiments

  694. is that Jesus

  695. goes to the cross

  696. to win

  697. this woman

  698. for himself

  699. see the cross

  700. is the only

  701. place we can go

  702. to make sense

  703. of what is

  704. happening here

  705. with Dina

  706. it is the place

  707. where the justice

  708. and the grace

  709. of God

  710. meet at their

  711. apex

  712. you see the cross

  713. of Jesus

  714. says to you

  715. and it says

  716. to Dina

  717. that what

  718. happened to

  719. you is not

  720. trivial

  721. that what

  722. happened to

  723. you is

  724. serious

  725. so serious

  726. in fact

  727. that it required

  728. the suffering

  729. and death

  730. of the son

  731. of God

  732. to pay

  733. for it

  734. we look

  735. at the cross

  736. and it doesn't

  737. undermine

  738. injustice

  739. it underscores

  740. it

  741. hear Jesus

  742. say

  743. from the cross

  744. that I know

  745. what it is

  746. to be humiliated

  747. I know

  748. what it is

  749. to be wronged

  750. and hear

  751. Jesus say

  752. right at the

  753. end of the

  754. Bible story

  755. that one day

  756. he will return

  757. to make

  758. all wrongs

  759. right

  760. and his

  761. heart

  762. right now

  763. in heaven

  764. for his

  765. people

  766. his heart

  767. right now

  768. for you

  769. whoever you

  770. are here

  771. today

  772. whatever has

  773. happened

  774. to you

  775. is exactly

  776. the same

  777. as it is

  778. as we see

  779. here

  780. and you know

  781. knowledge

  782. of that day

  783. that he will

  784. return to make

  785. all wrongs

  786. right

  787. knowledge of

  788. it means

  789. that we

  790. can leave

  791. justice

  792. to God

  793. it is only

  794. the grace

  795. of Jesus

  796. seen perfectly

  797. at the cross

  798. that makes

  799. the long

  800. long road

  801. of forgiveness

  802. and change

  803. a possibility

  804. and I've

  805. seen it

  806. in my own

  807. life

  808. when people

  809. forgive

  810. and I think

  811. wow

  812. it is only

  813. possible

  814. when Jesus

  815. takes out

  816. the heart

  817. that longs

  818. for revenge

  819. and blood

  820. and puts

  821. in it

  822. a knowledge

  823. of who

  824. he is

  825. and what

  826. he's done

  827. for us

  828. on the cross

  829. to quote

  830. Tim Keller

  831. a God

  832. who substitutes

  833. himself for

  834. you and

  835. suffers so

  836. that you

  837. might go

  838. free

  839. is a God

  840. that you

  841. can fully

  842. trust

  843. so what on

  844. earth is

  845. something like

  846. this doing

  847. in the Bible

  848. friends can I

  849. just leave us

  850. with two quick

  851. words of

  852. response I

  853. think we

  854. need to

  855. make

  856. here's the

  857. first and

  858. it's just

  859. simply the

  860. word tears

  861. I think

  862. what goes

  863. on here

  864. should break

  865. our hearts

  866. because we

  867. see injustice

  868. so often in

  869. our world

  870. don't we

  871. that our

  872. hearts can

  873. so often

  874. become numb

  875. to the

  876. plight of

  877. everyday human

  878. beings

  879. do we care

  880. about and are

  881. we willing to

  882. be a safe

  883. place where

  884. we walk

  885. with and

  886. welcome people

  887. in our city

  888. people in our

  889. lives who

  890. know this

  891. pain

  892. do you

  893. know it

  894. was the

  895. church's

  896. response to

  897. the great

  898. plagues of

  899. the second

  900. century as

  901. people were

  902. suffering left

  903. right and

  904. centre when

  905. everyone else

  906. was legging it

  907. out of the

  908. cities but the

  909. Christians stayed

  910. behind the

  911. historians reckon

  912. is the reason

  913. behind the

  914. explosive growth

  915. of Christianity

  916. in the second

  917. century as

  918. people looked

  919. on Christians

  920. and thought

  921. they really

  922. care

  923. you know we

  924. want to be a

  925. church family

  926. and maybe

  927. taking another

  928. angle on this

  929. where we treat

  930. and view

  931. particular members

  932. of the opposite

  933. sex radically

  934. differently

  935. you know three

  936. of the world's

  937. top 12 most

  938. visited websites

  939. in 2019

  940. were porn

  941. sites

  942. the biggest

  943. site in the

  944. UK has an

  945. average of 42

  946. billion visits

  947. per year

  948. which works

  949. itself out

  950. is 1200 clicks

  951. every second

  952. maybe particularly

  953. speaking to the

  954. guys in the

  955. room although I

  956. recognise that

  957. this is an issue

  958. for girls as

  959. well guys if

  960. you're in those

  961. zones right now

  962. if you've found

  963. yourself in those

  964. circles you need

  965. to do everything

  966. that you can to

  967. get out

  968. we want to create

  969. a safe space

  970. where we can be

  971. honest with one

  972. another about our

  973. struggles and if

  974. this is you today

  975. you have to see

  976. that Jesus has

  977. saved you out of

  978. that everything

  979. that you are doing

  980. every view

  981. every click is

  982. funding a

  983. institution that

  984. is taking

  985. advantage of

  986. some of the

  987. most violated

  988. people in our

  989. society

  990. not to mention

  991. the fact that

  992. simply it's just

  993. not the way that

  994. we should be

  995. viewing women

  996. particularly our

  997. sisters in

  998. Christ

  999. can I just say

  1000. as well not

  1001. just to go on

  1002. the defence but

  1003. to go on the

  1004. offence

  1005. guys we should

  1006. be the biggest

  1007. supporters of

  1008. the flourishing of

  1009. women's ministry

  1010. in this church

  1011. so here's what

  1012. we're going to

  1013. do if you're up

  1014. for this on

  1015. Wednesday night

  1016. when our

  1017. sisters meet

  1018. we are going to

  1019. meet on zoom

  1020. just for half an

  1021. hour to eight

  1022. and half eight

  1023. just to pray for

  1024. them because we

  1025. want them to know

  1026. that we love

  1027. them and we

  1028. see them and we

  1029. value everything

  1030. that they bring to

  1031. our church family

  1032. another angle in

  1033. this friends do we

  1034. see anger and

  1035. bitterness in our

  1036. hearts do you

  1037. see that longing

  1038. for revenge now

  1039. it might not

  1040. express itself to

  1041. the extent that it

  1042. does here but how

1043. often is it the case

  1044. that we can destroy

  1045. people with our

  1046. words we can

  1047. destroy people with

  1048. posts we can

  1049. destroy people with

  1050. texts and this

1051. calls us to be a

  1052. people who are

  1053. different with our

  1054. words and how we

  1055. treat other human

  1056. beings so that's the

  1057. first word tears

  1058. dear friends let's do

  1059. some soul searching

1060. off the back of this

  1061. and I couldn't be

  1062. creative enough to

  1063. come up with another

  1064. word so we're just

  1065. going to go for

  1066. fears tears and

  1067. fears this should

  1068. move us really

  1069. simply as we close

  1070. to fear God more

  1071. fear the Lord come

  1072. back to him have

  1073. your eyes on him

  1074. the place just like

  1075. that woman that

  1076. says my only hope

  1077. is you Lord Jesus

1078. you know just as we

  1079. closed you know the

  1080. earliest Christians

  1081. had this saying

  1082. that they always

  1083. said and it was

  1084. just the word

  1085. Maranatha

  1086. Maranatha is just

  1087. taken from one of

  1088. the very last words

  1089. of the Bible in

  1090. response to what

  1091. Jesus said Jesus

  1092. says there right at

  1093. the end he says

  1094. behold I'm coming

  1095. soon it's the very

  1096. last taste that we

1097. get in the Bible of

  1098. what he says before

  1099. he comes that longing

  1100. that should be inside

  1101. his people's hearts

  1102. Lord Jesus come and

1103. make it new so what

  1104. Maranatha means is

  1105. just simply come Lord

  1106. Jesus come and make

  1107. it right come and

  1108. put perfect justice on

  1109. full display and one

1110. day he will and I

1111. take it in the words

  1112. of the Narnians that

1113. this will be true and

1114. I love the way that

  1115. C.S. Lewis captures

  1116. this wrong will be

  1117. right when Aslan

  1118. comes in sight and

  1119. the sound of his

  1120. roar sorrows will be

  1121. no more when he

  1122. bears his teeth

  1123. winter meets its

  1124. death and when he

  1125. shakes his mane we

  1126. shall have spring

1127. again and so it's to

  1128. him that we look

  1129. we're saying in just

  1130. a moment I want to

  1131. pray but particularly

  1132. if there's something

  1133. this morning that you

1134. want to chat about or

  1135. pray about and we've

  1136. covered so much stuff

  1137. here today but we

  1138. want to create a

  1139. church culture where

  1140. we are serious about

  1141. carrying one another's

  1142. burdens and so if

  1143. that's you here today

  1144. any of the elders

  1145. Keita anyone else

  1146. who's been up front

1147. here today it would be

1148. our joy to pray and

1149. chat to you if there's

  1150. not something you want

1151. to do this morning our

  1152. email addresses are all

1153. on the website you can

  1154. contact us through that

1155. but friends let's feel the

  1156. weight of the challenge

1157. and I hope the height of

  1158. the comfort that's come

1159. to us as we've heard

1160. God speak to us today

1161. in his word let's pray

  1162. the words that Jesus

  1163. said there in Mark

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  1164. chapter 5 daughter

  1165. rise your faith has

  1166. made you well

1167. oh Lord thank you that

  1168. there is none that

  1169. compares with Jesus

1170. thank you that we do

  1171. not need to second

  1172. guess what you are

  1173. like but thank you

  1174. that you have spoken

1175. to us in your words

1176. thank you that we see

  1177. you on full display

  1178. your heart your

  1179. purposes as we gaze

  1180. at Jesus and so

  1181. father I'm so conscious

1182. that I have no idea

  1183. where this lands today

  1184. but father thank you

1185. that your spirit is a

  1186. way better pastor than

  1187. I will ever be

1188. and so Lord I pray

  1189. that as he works

  1190. through your words

  1191. that's gone forth

  1192. this morning that he

  1193. would be bringing

  1194. comfort

  1195. assurance

  1196. tenderness

  1197. challenge

  1198. and words

  1199. of rebuke

  1200. father may

  1201. we be a community

  1202. that shines

  1203. the light of Jesus

  1204. even more brightly

  1205. in our world

  1206. father we thank you

  1207. for your goodness

  1208. and we just pray

  1209. all of these things

  1210. knowing that you hear

  1211. us because we pray

  1212. in Jesus's worthy name

  1213. amen

  1214. blessings

  1215. for future

  1216. you
