  1. Thanks very much, Anne. Hello again.

  2. Why was I born? Why am I living? What do I get? What am I giving?

  3. Why do I want a thing I daren't hope for? What can I hope for?

  4. I wish I knew.

  5. That cheerful ditty was written almost 100 years ago by Oscar Hammerstein,

  6. but for many people it would resonate today as well.

  7. What is the point? Is there any purpose in life?

  8. What should we be looking for?

  9. It was maybe put a bit more succinctly and more recently by Lana Del Rey.

  10. She wrote in one of her songs,

  11. You and I, we were born to die.

  12. Quite depressing, isn't it, to think of life without a purpose?

  13. And yet I think many people today feel that,

  14. that life is a bit pointless,

  15. they don't know where they're going,

  16. they don't know why they're here,

  17. they don't know what's going to happen to them.

  18. There's a website many of you may be familiar with called Quora.

  19. On Quora, people can post questions on practical, intellectual, philosophical things,

  20. and lots of people will pile in with their replies.

  21. And if you type in something like,

  22. Why was I born to die?

  23. You might get answers that sound something like this.

  24. We exist because of evolutionary pressures from the environment among us,

  25. occurring over millions of years.

  26. There is no purpose to our existence,

  27. because evolution has no goal in mind or vision for how we should be.

  28. Evolution doesn't have a mind, we just exist.

  29. Any meaning or purpose we ascribe to life or death is manufactured by humans

  30. to make our lives easier to get through,

  31. because it's hard for people to accept a meaningless thing.

  32. Depressing, isn't it?

  33. Well, what I want us to take from this morning

  34. is that life does have a purpose,

  35. and our lives can have real purpose to them.

  36. And we're going to see that because we're looking at the person

  37. who had the most awareness of the purpose on his life of anyone,

  38. Jesus Christ.

  39. We're going to think about what that purpose was.

  40. We're going to think about some of the people Jesus met

  41. and interacted with in the passage that I read to us,

  42. and the challenge that comes to us through them.

  43. Now, usually I'm going to start in the middle this morning,

  44. because I think that's where the core of the passage is,

  45. and it's where we get most of the background to it from.

  46. So we're going to start, I'm going to read verses 27 and 28,

  47. where Jesus is speaking, and he says,

  48. Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say?

  49. Father, save me from this hour.

  50. No, it was for this very reason that I came to this hour.

  51. Father, glorify your name.

  52. Then a voice came from heaven.

  53. I have glorified it and will glorify it again.

  54. As we read through John's Gospel,

  55. something that we find referred to many times

  56. is the hour, Jesus' hour.

  57. Three times in the earlier part of the Gospel we've looked at up till now,

  58. Jesus says, My hour has not yet come.

  59. That was when he did his first miracle at Cana,

  60. and twice when people tried to seize him and couldn't,

  61. because the time hadn't yet come.

  62. And three times he says, My hour has come.

  63. So it was at the start of the passage we read,

  64. or at the start of the section that I'm looking at just now,

  65. in verse 23.

  66. He says it again, or said again about him,

  67. in John 13 at the start of his upper room ministry,

  68. and then again at John 17,

  69. as the Lord prays to his Father.

  70. The whole of Jesus' life was centered around the fact

  71. that there was an hour coming.

  72. What was that hour?

  73. It was when he was crucified,

  74. when he died on the cross for us.

  75. And the whole of his life was building up to that moment

  76. when he would go to the cross,

  77. and when he would take our sins on himself.

  78. I think we can learn three things about the hour

  79. from the verses that I read just now.

  80. First of all, it was an hour of agony.

  81. Secondly, Jesus, as he looked forward to it,

  82. he was troubled.

  83. He says, Now my soul is troubled.

  84. What shall I say?

  85. Father, save me from this hour.

  86. Mostly in the Gospels, we read,

  87. Jesus is going resolutely towards Jerusalem.

  88. He knows that it's God's will that he should suffer

  89. and die on the cross,

  90. and he is determined to fulfill that will.

  91. But just once or twice,

  92. we get a glimpse into what Jesus really felt

  93. about what was going to happen.

  94. The other obvious time is in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  95. when he says,

  96. Father, if it's possible, let this cup pass from me.

  97. And he says,

  98. What shall I say?

  99. Father, save me from this hour.

  100. Because what was in front of Jesus was truly awful.

  101. I think at times it's easy to think of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross

  102. and to kind of have almost in our minds,

  103. well, he was God.

  104. It wasn't as bad for him as it would have been for us.

  105. Well, Jesus was man, fully man, as well as God.

  106. And the betrayal by his friends,

  107. the mockery, the whipping,

  108. and the agony of crucifixion were very, very real to him,

  109. as they would be to us.

  110. We can perhaps begin to feel what that is like.

  111. What I think is much more difficult for us to imagine and to understand

  112. is that when Jesus was dying on the cross,

  113. he was completely separated from his Father God.

  114. Jesus took our sins on himself.

  115. And a holy God can't look on sin,

  116. and Jesus felt he had been abandoned, forsaken by his Father.

  117. And that, I believe, was the greatest suffering of all,

  118. as he took the punishment for sin,

  119. as he was separated from God.

  120. And so he's looking forward as he comes to his hour,

  121. and he is looking forward with dread to what is about to happen to him.

  122. Second thing, though, it's an hour of obedience.

  123. So he says,

  124. Shall I say, Father, save me from this hour?

  125. No, it was for this very reason that I came to this hour.

  126. When we think of reasons why Jesus came into the world,

  127. there are several.

  128. He came to show us what God is like.

  129. So we look at Jesus, and we can see God among us,

  130. and how God lives.

  131. He came to be an example to us,

  132. to show us how we should live,

  133. the kind of lives that should characterize us.

  134. He came to bring us God's words.

  135. We were thinking of that in the early service this morning,

  136. that Jesus came with the word of God to speak to us.

  137. But above all, he came to die.

  138. The reason he came into this world was that he should die for our sins.

  139. Only if someone was able to take the penalty for our sins,

  140. take the punishment that was due to us,

  141. could we be forgiven.

  142. And no one but Jesus could have done that.

  143. He was the only one who met the requirement of being absolutely sinless,

  144. and therefore able to take the punishment for us.

  145. And so whatever the cost,

  146. Jesus was determined he was going to obey the will of his Father,

  147. and he was going to go and to die on the cross.

  148. The hour of agony was also an hour of obedience.

  149. Obedience even to death on a cross.

  150. Then the third thing is that it is an hour of glory.

  151. Now you might think, looking at it superficially,

  152. that someone dying on a cross is perhaps the least glorious thing

  153. almost that you could imagine.

  154. It's humiliation, it's shame, it's pain,

  155. it's the mockery of people round about.

  156. What is glorious about that?

  157. And yet Jesus says,

  158. the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  159. And then he says again,

  160. Father, glorify your name,

  161. and the confirmation comes from God.

  162. I have glorified it,

  163. and will glorify it again.

  164. This is one of only three times when we hear that voice from heaven.

  165. The others were at Jesus' baptism,

  166. and at the transfiguration,

  167. and at this third really significant moment in his life,

  168. he gets again the affirmation from his Father.

  169. Through the cross, Jesus is glorified.

  170. Through the cross, God is glorified.

  171. And Jesus gives us a little indication of what that was in the following verses.

  172. So in verse 31, he says,

  173. Now is the time for judgment on this world.

  174. Now the prince of this world will be driven out.

  175. The cross at Calvary might have seemed at that time to many people to be defeat for Jesus.

  176. He had traveled around Galilee and Judea for three years.

  177. He had enjoyed a lot of popularity.

  178. We'll come back to the early verses of his entry into Jerusalem.

  179. He enjoyed a lot of popularity.

  180. And then he was nailed to a cross.

  181. And people looking at that thought,

  182. Well, that's him defeated.

  183. I think the disciples felt that too,

  184. because they didn't really understand what was going on.

  185. But Jesus says,

  186. No, it's not defeat.

  187. It's victory.

  188. When I die on the cross,

  189. I will overcome the evil one once and for all.

  190. The world is going to be judged through my action.

  191. And the evil one, the print of the world, will be driven out.

  192. Now that was not an immediate thing.

  193. We still have the work of the devil.

  194. We still have evil in our world as we see every day.

  195. And yet the devil has been defeated.

  196. And one day that will be obvious.

  197. And he was defeated by Jesus dying on the cross.

  198. By the punishment Jesus took,

  199. and by the fact that he could shout at the end,

  200. It is finished.

  201. The work that God had given him, he had done.

  202. And that is glorious.

  203. The other glorious thing is in verse 32.

  204. Jesus says,

  205. I, when I am lifted from the earth,

  206. will draw all people to myself.

  207. This little incident was prompted originally

  208. by a question for some Greeks.

  209. She said,

  210. We want to see Jesus.

  211. And I think that is what triggered Jesus to say,

  212. My hour has now come.

  213. Because God's word was about to go beyond

  214. just the confines of Israel,

  215. beyond just the Jewish nation,

  216. and to go into the whole world through Jesus.

  217. And how did that happen?

  218. It happened by being lifted up on a cross

  219. and dying for our sins.

  220. And the glory of Jesus on the cross

  221. is what has attracted many of us to him.

  222. And we are part of his reward

  223. for what he did as he died for our sins.

  224. So the hour that Jesus is talking about

  225. is an hour of agony.

  226. It's an hour of horrific suffering.

  227. But it's also an hour of obedience,

  228. of obedience to God.

  229. And it's an hour of glory

  230. as evil is defeated,

  231. as Jesus is able to bring the whole world to him,

  232. all those who will believe.

  233. Before we go back and look at the rest of the passage,

  234. let's just take this challenge for ourselves.

  235. Do we believe that?

  236. When we look back on Jesus,

  237. when we look back on the cross,

  238. do we understand how much he went through for us?

  239. Do we understand the extent of his obedience to God?

  240. Do we understand the glory that is there?

  241. And have we taken him for ourselves?

  242. Have our sins been forgiven by trusting in him?

  243. Now let's go back,

  244. and we'll just walk quite quickly

  245. through the whole of the passage.

  246. And this time as we go through,

  247. what I particularly want to look at

  248. is how Jesus challenges us

  249. and how people respond to him.

  250. So there'll be two things there as we go along,

  251. the challenge of Jesus

  252. and the response of the people.

  253. So I've headed the first part of the passage,

  254. coming as a king.

  255. This is the very familiar story to most of us

  256. of Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem,

  257. Palm Sunday.

  258. John tells us slightly differently

  259. from the other Gospels,

  260. and I want to focus particularly

  261. on what John has to say to us through it.

  262. And the first thing we might notice

  263. is that there are two crowds

  264. in the section from verse 12

  265. through to verse 19.

  266. There's a crowd that's come to Jerusalem

  267. for the festival.

  268. Many of them probably had come from Galilee,

  269. so they would have seen the miracles

  270. that Jesus did when he was there,

  271. and they already would have an idea

  272. of how special he was.

  273. The second crowd is in verse 17,

  274. and that is the crowd that had witnessed

  275. the raising of Lazarus

  276. that we looked at two or three weeks back.

  277. That miraculous event

  278. where Jesus brought back to life

  279. someone who had been dead for four days.

  280. And these people too would be coming

  281. in the crowds,

  282. and they were talking to others

  283. about the wonderful things

  284. that they had seen.

  285. And as these two crowds come together

  286. and others along with them,

  287. the atmosphere becomes one of celebration

  288. and one of anticipation.

  289. So they see Jesus coming into Jerusalem,

  290. and they think this could be the moment

  291. when Jesus frees us from the Romans.

  292. We have this great, powerful man

  293. who can do such wonderful things,

  294. a charismatic figure.

  295. He's the one who's going to finally

  296. free us from the bondage of Rome.

  297. And what does Jesus do?

  298. He sits on a donkey.

  299. He finds a donkey,

  300. and he sits on it to go through the crowd.

  301. It would have been a familiar sight

  302. in many cities

  303. for a victorious emperor or general

  304. to come back

  305. and for the crowds

  306. to throng around him.

  307. And he would be on a war horse,

  308. the biggest horse you could imagine,

  309. so that he was seen

  310. as someone who was really powerful

  311. and was really to be feared.

  312. Jesus chooses to come

  313. and to sit on a donkey.

  314. And by that,

  315. I think he's saying

  316. that his kingship at that time

  317. was not in overthrowing the Romans.

  318. He was coming as a king,

  319. but he was coming as God's king

  320. as the one who would do God's will.

  321. And I think that's the quotation from Zechariah

  322. that the disciples say

  323. they only understood later.

  324. That's the significance of that.

  325. It's the king coming,

  326. but he's coming in humility.

  327. He's coming as the servant king.

  328. He's coming as the savior king

  329. rather than as one

  330. who is going to come at that stage

  331. with military might.

  332. And yet the people don't understand.

  333. Most of the people want him to be king

  334. and want him to go

  335. and overthrow the Romans.

  336. The disciples may be rather confused.

  337. John says they only understood later

  338. the significance of what was happening.

  339. And the rulers, the Pharisees,

  340. they were worried.

  341. They thought he's becoming

  342. just a bit too popular.

  343. And so that would have made them

  344. even more resolved

  345. that they would get rid of him,

  346. that they would ensure that he died.

  347. But he was coming as a king,

  348. but not as a king

  349. that the people expected.

  350. The middle section,

  351. and we've talked quite a lot about that already,

  352. so we'll go through it

  353. a little more quickly now,

  354. I've called going like a grain.

  355. And there's this wonderful picture

  356. at the centre of it

  357. of the grain of wheat

  358. that falls into the ground

  359. and dies.

  360. Now again, we might think about

  361. some of the reactions

  362. around to what's said here.

  363. The Greeks, I think,

  364. were more than just curious sightseers.

  365. They actually genuinely wanted

  366. to see and to understand Jesus.

  367. At the end, the people were saying,

  368. well, we don't understand.

  369. They couldn't accept

  370. what Jesus was saying to them.

  371. But in the middle,

  372. there is this challenge.

  373. The hour has come

  374. for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  375. Jesus says,

  376. unless a grain of wheat

  377. falls into the ground and dies,

  378. it remains only a single seed.

  379. But if it dies,

  380. it produces many seeds.

  381. Now we look at that

  382. and think that is true of Jesus.

  383. That is what has happened with Jesus.

  384. Jesus died on the cross

  385. for our sins,

  386. and he brought many,

  387. many millions of people

  388. to know God

  389. and to have eternal life.

  390. And yes, it certainly is true of Jesus.

  391. But the application he gives

  392. is not to himself.

  393. It's to us.

  394. The grain of wheat

  395. that falls into the ground

  396. and dies and then springs up,

  397. Jesus says,

  398. we should be like that.

  399. Anyone who loves their life

  400. will lose it,

  401. or anyone who hates their life

  402. in this world

  403. will keep it for eternal life.

  404. Whoever serves me

  405. must follow me

  406. and where I am,

  407. my servant also will be.

  408. My father will honour

  409. the one who serves me.

  410. So the challenge to us is,

  411. are we willing and able

  412. to follow the example of Jesus?

  413. Are we willing to give our lives

  414. for him,

  415. perhaps literally,

  416. but certainly in terms

  417. of the sacrifices

  418. that we are prepared to make?

  419. Jesus never promises

  420. that life with him

  421. will be easy.

  422. Indeed,

  423. at the moments

  424. of his greatest popularity,

  425. these are the moments

  426. when he issues

  427. these kinds of challenges.

  428. John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  429. defeating of the 5,000.

  430. The people want

  431. to make him king.

  432. And then Jesus gives

  433. some very difficult teaching

  434. about the bread of life

  435. and what that means.

  436. And most people then decide,

  437. well, actually,

  438. we're not going to follow him.

  439. because their trust in him

  440. was very superficial.

  441. And maybe he's doing

  442. the same thing here.

  443. You've got people

  444. who feel he's very popular,

  445. who feel he's someone

  446. really to be admired

  447. and looked up to.

  448. You've got others

  449. who are wanting

  450. to find out more about him.

  451. And Jesus says,

  452. if you follow me,

  453. it will be difficult.

  454. Don't come expecting

  455. just to be part

  456. of a victorious army

  457. that will sweep the land

  458. and will get rid

  459. of all the Romans.

  460. If you follow me,

  461. you have to be willing

  462. to make sacrifices.

  463. I think that's a very good lesson

  464. for us as well.

  465. If we're Christians,

  466. if we believe

  467. in the Lord Jesus,

  468. we need to be willing

  469. to make sacrifices

  470. for him.

  471. Often when we think

  472. about Christian service

  473. and we talk to people,

  474. and if you become

  475. a new member of the church,

  476. we talk to you

  477. about how you can serve.

  478. Often we think about

  479. what are the things

  480. people will enjoy?

  481. What are the things

  482. they're good at?

  483. These are the things

  484. that we'll ask them to do.

  485. And quite right,

  486. we want people

  487. to enjoy their service.

  488. We want them to do things

  489. they're really gifted for.

  490. But not all Christian service

  491. is like that.

  492. And in our service,

  493. there will be times

  494. when there are things

  495. that are really hard

  496. that God calls us to do.

  497. And like Jesus,

  498. we need to be willing

  499. to do them.

  500. I talk frequently

  501. and I don't apologise

  502. for it about my grandparents.

  503. My grandparents

  504. were missionaries in India.

  505. And one of the yearly events

  506. of the missionaries in India

  507. was a festival

  508. at a place called

  509. Antarvedi.

  510. It was just a few miles

  511. from there

  512. where they were working.

  513. And it was a massive

  514. Hindu festival.

  515. But a quarter million

  516. or more Hindu people

  517. used to come

  518. on pilgrimage

  519. every year.

  520. And they came to bathe

  521. at the junction

  522. where the Godafri River

  523. flows into the Bay of Bengal

  524. to bathe, I think,

  525. for washing away of sins.

  526. But it was a huge event

  527. and a real festive atmosphere

  528. and there were stalls

  529. and all sorts of things there.

  530. And the missionaries

  531. used to go every year

  532. and they would stand

  533. and they would hand out tracts,

  534. they would sell gospels

  535. and they would talk to people

  536. who were willing to listen.

  537. And more often than not,

  538. they had a really hard time.

  539. People would shout abuse at them

  540. and sometimes they would

  541. throw things

  542. and it was only the rubbish

  543. the missionaries feel

  544. they got off fairly lightly.

  545. I was struck by something

  546. that one of the missionaries

  547. wrote about this.

  548. He says,

  549. we attend in fear

  550. and shall be very glad

  551. when it's over

  552. kind of feeling.

  553. It was something they felt

  554. was God's will for them to do.

  555. It was the right thing to do.

  556. But it was really difficult.

  557. They didn't look forward to it.

  558. They didn't enjoy it.

  559. But they had the satisfaction,

  560. I'm sure,

  561. looking back,

  562. of knowing that they had done

  563. what they thought was right.

  564. And for us too,

  565. there may be situations

  566. which are really hard for us.

  567. Perhaps when we put somewhere

  568. where people are not sympathetic

  569. to Christians

  570. and we need to let people know

  571. who we believe in

  572. and what we stand for.

  573. And that can be really,

  574. really difficult.

  575. And yet we can know

  576. that Jesus has been through

  577. something much,

  578. much more difficult

  579. than we ever will.

  580. And that when we face

  581. these things,

  582. he will be with us.

  583. We are the grains

  584. of wheat

  585. that need to be willing

  586. to sacrifice ourselves

  587. for the great harvest

  588. that can come from it.

  589. Finally,

  590. just very briefly,

  591. let's look at the last

  592. couple of verses.

  593. Verses 35 and 36.

  594. Jesus told them,

  595. you're going to have the light

  596. just a little while longer.

  597. Walk while you have the light

  598. before darkness overtakes you.

  599. The theme of light

  600. is one that we get

  601. throughout John's Gospel.

  602. I think as we come

  603. to the end

  604. of Jesus' public ministry,

  605. John is very deliberately

  606. reminding us

  607. of the very start

  608. of his Gospel.

  609. where John says

  610. the light came into the world

  611. and the darkness,

  612. now shone in darkness,

  613. and the darkness

  614. could not overcome it.

  615. Then we have chapters 8 and 9

  616. where Jesus talks about

  617. being the light

  618. of the world.

  619. We have that great miracle

  620. where he gives the blind man

  621. back his sight.

  622. And now at the end

  623. of his public ministry,

  624. Jesus gives a very

  625. stern warning.

  626. He says,

  627. you've had the light.

  628. I've been with you.

  629. You've had the opportunity

  630. to believe

  631. and to follow me.

  632. And that opportunity

  633. is about to go.

  634. I won't be here

  635. very much longer.

  636. What is your response

  637. to that?

  638. Will you believe

  639. in the light

  640. while you still have time?

  641. Or will you choose

  642. still to walk in darkness

  643. and to walk

  644. in your own way?

  645. If you have the light,

  646. you can live life

  647. with a purpose.

  648. You can see

  649. where you're going.

  650. You can see

  651. what the right thing

  652. is to do.

  653. If you're walking

  654. in darkness,

  655. then life does become

  656. a bit aimless

  657. like we were thinking

  658. about at the beginning.

  659. Only in the light

  660. is there true

  661. fulfillment.

  662. Now, we're not

  663. in an identical situation.

  664. Jesus hasn't been

  665. physically among us.

  666. But in many ways,

  667. it's very similar.

  668. The call still comes

  669. to walk in the light.

  670. To look at Jesus

  671. and to see in him

  672. everything that we should be

  673. and to take his guidance

  674. through the Spirit

  675. about how we should live.

  676. And for all of us,

  677. there will come a time

  678. when that's no longer

  679. possible.

  680. We don't know

  681. how long we've got

  682. in this world.

  683. And it's really important

  684. while we have

  685. the opportunity

  686. to trust in Jesus,

  687. to accept forgiveness

  688. through him,

  689. and to live lives

  690. that are obedient to him,

  691. that are walked

  692. in the light,

  693. that are walked

  694. the way

  695. that Jesus

  696. walked.

  697. Let's all make sure

  698. that we do live

  699. in the light

  700. of Jesus.

  701. Let me end by going back

  702. to where we were

  703. at the beginning

  704. and talking about purpose.

  705. One of the most

  706. influential Christian books

  707. of this century

  708. was by Rick Warren

  709. from Saddleback Church

  710. in California

  711. called

  712. The Purpose Driven Life.

  713. And Rick Warren

  714. identifies five

  715. particular purposes

  716. that each Christian

  717. should have.

  718. and they're very much

  719. connected

  720. and not surprisingly

  721. with the kind of purposes

  722. that we as a church

  723. would have,

  724. the priorities

  725. that we would give.

  726. And the challenge

  727. for us

  728. if we're Christians

  729. is

  730. do we fulfil

  731. all

  732. these purposes?

  733. Or are there some

  734. where we think

  735. yes, that's quite good

  736. and others

  737. we're not really

  738. taking heed of?

  739. So the five purposes

  740. I've paraphrased slightly.

  741. We want to worship God.

  742. We want to recognise

  743. the greatness of our God

  744. and to bring to him

  745. the worship

  746. of our voices

  747. but the worship

  748. of our lives

  749. as well.

  750. We want to love others.

  751. We want to show

  752. the love that Christ had

  753. to everyone

  754. round about us

  755. and to do it

  756. unselfishly.

  757. To look for the interests

  758. of others

  759. rather than

  760. our own interests.

  761. We want to become

  762. like Jesus.

  763. That's what we call

  764. discipleship.

  765. Becoming like Jesus

  766. and following

  767. his example.

  768. We want to serve God

  769. serve him in the church

  770. and serve him

  771. among one another.

  772. And we want to reach out

  773. we want to witness

  774. to others

  775. to tell them

  776. about Jesus.

  777. Are these not

  778. five great purposes

  779. for us to have?

  780. Life is not

  781. meaningless.

  782. Life is not

  783. pointless.

  784. Life that is

  785. truly lived

  786. to the full

  787. it is life

  788. that seeks

  789. to glorify God

  790. as Jesus did

  791. in everything

  792. we do.

  793. And that's reflected

  794. by our attitude

  795. to God

  796. our relationship

  797. with him

  798. it's reflecting

  799. our relationships

  800. with one another

  801. and it's reflected

  802. in our relationships

  803. with those

  804. who don't yet know

  805. the Lord Jesus

  806. as we would seek

  807. to witness

  808. to them.

  809. Let's live life

  810. with a purpose.

  811. Make sure

  812. that we know

  813. Jesus

  814. as our saviour

  815. but also

  816. that we follow

  817. him

  818. as our Lord.

  819. Let's pray together.

  820. Father we thank you

  821. for your word

  822. this morning.

  823. Thank you for the

  824. challenge that Jesus

  825. brings us

  826. that we should be

  827. like him

  828. that we should be

  829. willing to give

  830. our lives

  831. for your glory.

  832. And we thank you

  833. for the tremendous

  834. example he sets

  835. and particularly

  836. for his death

  837. on the cross

  838. that great purpose

  839. for which he came

  840. into the world

  841. that hour

  842. that was always

  843. in his mind

  844. as he went

  845. around

  846. and that hour

  847. when he took

  848. on himself

  849. our sins

  850. and the punishment

  851. that we deserve.

  852. We thank you for him

  853. and pray that all of us

  854. will put our trust

  855. in him

  856. and will choose

  857. to follow him

  858. and to enjoy

  859. real purpose

  860. in our lives.

  861. We give you our thanks

  862. and we commit ourselves

  863. to you now

  864. in Jesus name.

  865. Amen.
