  1. Well, good morning again. It's lovely to be here. Sorry for my complete lack of grace

  2. in failing to congratulate anyone from South Africa. I'm going to be speaking to a very

  3. dear friend who's South African tomorrow, so I'm kind of, I'm stealing myself for his

  4. gloating. So anyway, we're going to be talking a little today then about this idea of the

  5. restoration of humanity. And that might be, it might even seem like a strange idea that

  6. when we're talking about the Christian faith then, we're not talking about something that

  7. causes us to escape from reality or escape from creation, but rather it's about the restoration

  8. of it. C.S. Lewis, the author, once said something that I find deeply moving. He said that if we met

  9. now a human person untainted by sin, an unfallen human person, they would be so glorious that we

  10. would be tempted to fall down and worship them. But of course, we're not unfallen. There are so

  11. many things that are broken and that are twisted. We are what another author referred to as glorious

  12. ruins. And as a way of thinking about who we are as human persons, it's very helpful.

  13. We're glorious ruins. There's still so much that is beautiful that we can see in every person.

  14. The idea of every person being created in God's image confers dignity and respect. It means that

  15. there are no little or insignificant people. Everybody has value, and that's a beautiful thing.

  16. But also that everybody is infected by this same problem that we described yesterday, this idea of being

  17. curved in upon ourselves, where we're created to love God and to love others. Instead, we curve in

  18. and use our relationships to get what we can. I'm going to say more about that in just a minute or two.

  19. We looked at a bit of a framework for thinking about the Bible's bigger picture, creation. And we looked

  20. forward, though, to new creation as well. And the importance of that is that when you look at the

  21. creation account, do we just feel nostalgic because it's not like that now? But the Bible tells us how

  22. things conclude, how things come to their fantastic conclusion, where things are restored, where God

  23. restores things to be the way they're supposed to be. So it's not just a nostalgia for what's lost,

  24. but it's a longing for how things will be also. Things in the meantime, though, are not the way they're

  25. supposed to be. We don't need to look very hard to see that. And what God's in the business of doing

  26. in the meantime, then, is to restore and renew and to redeem, instead of being curved in on ourselves to

  27. turn us outward from ourselves. We talked a lot yesterday about the rejection of creatureliness

  28. in the account of the temptation in the Garden of Eden. The temptation is, you will take this fruit,

  29. then you will be like God. A rejection of creatureliness and the right ordering of our relationships.

  30. But also in that original temptation, there's the doubt about God's goodness.

  31. Is God good enough that I can trust him that what he says is actually good for me?

  32. And of course, that's exactly the temptation for all of us every moment of every day.

  33. Did God really say, is he really trustworthy? Is he good? Does he want my best? Or is he somebody

  34. who just wants to constrain and restrict, to cramp us, to make us somehow less than fully human instead

  35. of fully human? And that's the reason for choosing that title today, the restoration of humanity.

  36. Because one of the big lies out there, and many of us are tempted to believe it, I'm sure,

  37. is that God's law, God's commands, God's ways for us are in fact those which constrain, constrict,

  38. reduce us, diminish our humanity. Whereas in actual fact, the message of the Bible is good news

  39. that what God says is good for us, is best for us. So that's what we're going to be thinking about,

  40. is how then does this get reversed, this assertion of autonomy? The idea of autonomy is that I am in

  41. charge, and that life and the purpose of life, the meaning of life is that I should try to arrange

  42. all my circumstances and my relationships and my possessions and use my gifts and opportunities,

  43. and all of that stuff there exists in order to make me happy and to make me contented and to make me

  44. secure and to fulfill my life. It puts me at the center. And of course, when it's ramped up in our

  45. current culture, it goes beyond just, if you like, the idea that I can use what's around me to make me

  46. better, to make me happier, it goes beyond that even to, and I actually get to decide what's right

  47. and wrong in the world on the basis of how I feel. I get to decide what's true and false on the basis of

  48. how I feel internally. And of course, our culture right now has perhaps promoted and normalized this

  49. more than any culture in human history. This idea of autonomy, it's almost reflexive. We think of

  50. ourselves, a good friend of mine has worked a great deal in Eastern Europe and in the East, and he

  51. asks people always a question, how do you think about yourself? And he notes, he observes that in the West,

  52. for most folks like us here, our instinctive response is to answer, I, whereas there are cultures in the

  53. world where people's responses, we, which is fascinating, very, very different. So a culture

  54. that normalizes autonomy, I'm in charge. Into that culture, directly confronting it comes the words

  55. that were read, Jesus' words. And Jesus' call to discipleship. Those words were, if anyone would come

  56. after me, let them deny themselves, take up the cross daily and follow me. That call to deny self,

  57. take up cross and follow, it confronts, it clashes head on with this idea of autonomy. And what I'm

  58. wanting to say and what I want to argue and commend to you is this, that that call to deny self,

  59. take up cross and follow, far from being a diminishment, a restriction or constraint,

  60. is a merciful call from the one who made us and knows us better than we know ourselves,

  61. who loves us more than we love ourselves, cares for us more than we care for ourselves,

  62. wants what's best and can do what's best for us. It's that one who says, deny self,

  63. take up cross and follow. And that's a liberation from the corrosive, the poisonous effects of autonomy.

  64. That's what Jesus' call is. And that's what I want us to focus in on. And we'll just go through

  65. bit by bit. There's the text up there. One of the things that I want to just point out,

  66. and it's just a little thing for how we read the Bible for when you're reading it yourself.

  67. This little passage that we read, of course, is in a context. And its context is it's sandwiched between

  68. the beginning of Luke chapter 9, Jesus sends out 12. Beginning of chapter 10 of Luke, Jesus sends out 72.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  69. And he sends them out to do Jesus' stuff. To do the stuff that Jesus has been doing in the world.

  70. To go and to preach good news of kingdom. To heal people. To drive out demons. To do Jesus' stuff.

  71. He sends them out, and then he sends even more out at the beginning of chapter 10.

  72. And the idea of what does it take for people to be prepared to be the kind of people who can go and

  73. do Jesus' stuff in the world is right in the middle of the chapter. Deny self, take a cross,

  74. and follow, says Jesus. And then you're going and you're doing Jesus' stuff in the world. A world that

  75. desperately needs that. To put it more technically, discipleship and mission are so intimately related

  76. and inseparable. Those who follow Jesus are those who do Jesus' stuff in the world, if you like.

  77. Let's think about this business of denying self. Because we probably hear that as quite a negative

  78. thing. We may associate that with the sort of false asceticism, perhaps. Like, you know, give up

  79. chocolate for Lent or whatever. These rather trivial things. But much more fundamentally, this question of

  80. deny self is a question that addresses who is in charge. One of the ways that I find helpful to think

  81. about this is to imagine a throne or a seat of authority in our lives. And who's sitting on it,

  82. giving the instructions and the directions? Is it me that's sitting on that seat of authority?

  83. Or is it God who's sitting on that seat of authority? And this battle that enrages for many of us as we're

  84. constantly tempted, as we doubt whether God really is good enough to trust to sort of push aside and to

  85. get back onto that seat. So that's really the question that's being asked is, who is in charge?

  86. Who's the one who calls the shots? Is it myself? Am I in charge and basically trying to use God to get

  87. what I want and use all my other relationships to get what I want? There's a direction that follows

  88. from this. If I put myself in charge, then I have to get very busy making life work for me.

  89. And that's going to involve making my relationships work to provide me with what I think I need.

  90. It's going to involve defending myself against things that might threaten me. It's going to involve

  91. using everything at my disposal to try to make me secure and happy and content. And Jesus says, no, that's

  92. not actually the way. And we'll come to this in a minute or two. Not only is that not the way, that guarantees

  93. that you won't get the things that you're looking for. It's actually counterproductive.

  94. This question of who's in charge could also be framed in terms of ownership. Who owns us? Who's the one

  95. who actually has claim of ownership over us? That's why we started with the idea of creation yesterday.

  96. Because actually there is one who said, I made it all and it's mine. And therefore you are accountable to me.

  97. This idea of ownership then is about rightly ordered relationships rather than disordered relationships.

  98. Paul talks about this, the Apostle Paul talks about this in other different ways.

  99. I was reflecting on this and it was nice that it was mentioned in the kids session

  100. earlier in the service,

  101. where part of Ephesians 2, 1 to 10 was quoted, verse 8, about it's by grace you've been saved and through faith.

  102. But that passage is fascinating

  103. because Paul describes

  104. people like you and me

  105. as being dead in our sins

  106. and our transgressions.

  107. And the idea

  108. and the picture is of helplessness,

  109. of hopelessness.

  110. He describes us as being, by nature,

  111. children of wrath.

  112. And he then says,

  113. but God,

  114. but God has done something amazing about this.

  115. That God has reached in,

  116. has come to us

  117. in our helplessness

  118. and in our hopelessness.

  119. And Paul goes on to say,

  120. he's then made us alive

  121. together with Christ.

  122. He's raised us from the grave

  123. together with Christ

  124. and seated us together

  125. with Christ

  126. in the heavenlies.

  127. By grace,

  128. you're saved,

  129. he says.

  130. And it's not just that he's

  131. made us alive

  132. and raised and seated us.

  133. He's done this,

  134. Paul goes on to say,

  135. so that we might walk

  136. in the good works

  137. that God's prepared

  138. for us to do in advance.

  139. It's another way of saying

  140. the same thing.

  141. Deny self is

  142. is a transfer of ownership.

  143. And here in Ephesians,

  144. Paul is talking about

  145. a transfer of ownership

  146. and actually a transfer

  147. from death to life

  148. and life that is united

  149. to Jesus Christ.

  150. And that's the good news

  151. that he unites us

  152. by grace

  153. out of pure kindness

  154. and gift

  155. to Christ

  156. to give us the gift

  157. of new life

  158. and transformed relationships

  159. as a result.

  160. The basis for transformation,

  161. and this is so key

  162. when we're reading

  163. the Gospels,

  164. when we're reading

  165. any part of the Bible,

  166. is not go and sort yourself out

  167. and try a bit harder.

  168. That's not good news

  169. to go and sort yourself out,

  170. try a bit harder,

  171. tidy up your act,

  172. and try and look

  173. like you're a bit better

  174. than you actually are.

  175. The good news is

  176. that this is gift

  177. and it's a gift

  178. of new life

  179. to be united

  180. with Jesus,

  181. to deny self,

  182. the ownership

  183. to be transferred,

  184. the Christ being

  185. on the throne

  186. of the life

  187. of our lives

  188. instead of ourselves

  189. sitting on it.

  190. All these different ways

  191. of saying the same thing.

  192. That's the basis then

  193. for receiving this gift

  194. of new life

  195. that's transformative.

  196. It leads to a whole set

  197. of new heart attitudes.

  198. But maybe you're sitting

  199. and you're thinking,

  200. well, what about my rights?

  201. What about me?

  202. If I deny self,

  203. if someone else owns me,

  204. then what about my rights?

  205. And that's what Jesus

  206. goes on to say.

  207. It's not just deny self.

  208. He says,

  209. deny self,

  210. take up cross,

  211. take up your cross daily

  212. and follow.

  213. What does that mean?

  214. This idea of taking up

  215. the cross and following

  216. is a pattern

  217. that's repeated

  218. all over the New Testament.

  219. The idea of this

  220. taking up the cross

  221. is to reflect

  222. on the pattern

  223. of what Jesus does

  224. in going to the cross.

  225. And when Jesus

  226. goes to the cross,

  227. it's actually

  228. demonstrating

  229. God's love to us.

  230. It's a love then

  231. that is willing

  232. to give

  233. to others.

  234. It's a love

  235. that doesn't

  236. defend itself

  237. but in fact

  238. gives all that it has

  239. for the blessing

  240. and the benefit

  241. of others.

  242. Even if that

  243. seems to involve

  244. suffering

  245. or pain

  246. or loss.

  247. So to take up

  248. the cross

  249. and follow

  250. is to recognize

  251. that there's a cross-shaped

  252. pattern

  253. for life

  254. that Jesus

  255. calls people

  256. to walk in.

  257. A pattern

  258. of life

  259. that involves

  260. understanding

  261. that all we are

  262. and all we have

  263. is actually not

  264. given to us

  265. for ourselves

  266. but actually

  267. for the blessing

  268. and benefit

  269. of others.

  270. We're designed

  271. if you like

  272. not so much

  273. to be receptacles

  274. of what God gives

  275. but channels of it

  276. to others.

  277. And that's this picture

  278. of cross-shaped living.

  279. We've already mentioned

  280. Ephesians

  281. so we might as well

  282. mention a bit more

  283. of Ephesians

  284. but the beginning

  285. of chapter 5

  286. in Ephesians

  287. is just one of the

  288. many places

  289. in the New Testament

  290. that gives us

  291. exactly this pattern.

  292. Paul there says

  293. therefore

  294. be imitators

  295. of God.

  296. It's a startling statement.

  297. How do we imitate God?

  298. We can't create worlds

  299. and sustain them

  300. but Paul goes on

  301. to define exactly

  302. what imitation of God

  303. actually means.

  304. He says

  305. as beloved children

  306. walk in love

  307. as Christ loved us

  308. and gave himself

  309. for us.

  310. Let's think about

  311. that pattern

  312. a bit further.

  313. Deny self

  314. take up cross

  315. and here's this pattern.

  316. Paul says

  317. be imitators

  318. and first thing

  319. he says

  320. is be imitators

  321. as beloved children.

  322. You don't

  323. be imitators

  324. in order

  325. to become

  326. loved children.

  327. That's crucial.

  328. That's the point

  329. I was making

  330. just a second

  331. or two ago.

  332. It's as beloved children

  333. who've already

  334. received love

  335. from God

  336. and received it

  337. not because

  338. we are special people

  339. who've particularly

  340. managed to clean up

  341. our act

  342. try harder

  343. or look nice

  344. or be nice

  345. but received

  346. gift

  347. from God.

  348. This idea

  349. of gift

  350. is so fundamental

  351. to the way

  352. that the Bible

  353. speaks about

  354. God's relationship

  355. with us

  356. and part of

  357. the twisting

  358. out of shape

  359. that we see

  360. so much

  361. is that we

  362. reject gift

  363. and we want

  364. to do it

  365. ourselves

  366. in all kinds

  367. of different ways.

  368. As beloved

  369. children though

  370. those who receive

  371. God's love

  372. with open hands

  373. this gift

  374. and that idea

  375. of open hands

  376. I think

  377. is a really

  378. helpful way

  379. of thinking

  380. about what

  381. faith is.

  382. Earlier

  383. in Ephesians

  384. in the passage

  385. that was referred

  386. to

  387. salvation

  388. is described

  389. as being by grace

  390. and through faith.

  391. Again

  392. we hear the word

  393. faith

  394. and we think

  395. about it

  396. as an intellectual

  397. thing

  398. agreeing with

  399. certain things

  400. that are true.

  401. Much

  402. much better

  403. is to think

  404. about it

  405. as the open

  406. hands that receive

  407. and of course

  408. if hands are

  409. to be open

  410. to receive

  411. gift from God

  412. they've got to

  413. let go of all

  414. the other stuff

  415. that they're

  416. holding on to

  417. in the meantime.

  418. All the things

  419. that I want

  420. to hold on to

  421. to make life work

  422. and as long

  423. as that's the case

  424. I can't receive

  425. this gift

  426. and I have to

  427. let them go.

  428. It's a similar

  429. picture to getting

  430. off that seat

  431. off that throne

  432. denying self

  433. and having

  434. Christ alone

  435. as the one

  436. who's in charge

  437. and calling

  438. the shots.

  439. So as beloved

  440. children then

  441. those who've

  442. received gift

  443. how are we

  444. then to live?

  445. And Paul says

  446. our imitation

  447. of God

  448. is to imitate

  449. the pattern

  450. of Christ's

  451. love

  452. which is

  453. a loving

  454. sacrifice.

  455. He gave himself

  456. a fragrant

  457. offering

  458. and a sacrifice

  459. to God

  460. so that our

  461. imitation

  462. as loved

  463. children

  464. is to love

  465. as Christ loved

  466. to understand

  467. that all we

  468. are and have

  469. is given

  470. to love

  471. and bless

  472. others.

  473. To recognize

  474. that there is

  475. nothing that we

  476. have

  477. that is just

  478. for ourselves.

  479. To recognize

  480. that our very

  481. purpose in life

  482. is to love

  483. and to bless

  484. others

  485. and that this

  486. pattern of being

  487. a child of God

  488. receiving from

  489. God

  490. is then to

  491. pour out from

  492. what we receive

  493. to others.

  494. That's the picture

  495. that I guess

  496. I'm trying

  497. to wrestle

  498. with.

  499. This idea

  500. then of

  501. receiving from

  502. God so that

  503. we are filled

  504. from what

  505. he gives us

  506. as gift

  507. freely

  508. and abundantly

  509. and lavishly

  510. so that

  511. we are then

  512. pouring the

  513. same out

  514. towards others.

  515. The people

  516. we live with

  517. our workmates

  518. our schoolmates

  519. university friends

  520. our family

  521. whoever it is

  522. we are receiving

  523. from God

  524. himself

  525. in order

  526. to pour

  527. out love

  528. towards others.

  529. It's a beautiful

  530. picture

  531. of what

  532. we are designed

  533. to do.

  534. The contrast

  535. though

  536. and it's important

  537. to point it out

  538. the contrast

  539. is that

  540. instead of

  541. receiving

  542. and being

  543. loved

  544. children

  545. instead of

  546. that it's

  547. this idea

  548. of saying

  549. I am empty

  550. and lacking

  551. and deficient

  552. and I need

  553. to get

  554. what I can.

  555. It's the contrast

  556. in other words

  557. between

  558. receiving

  559. and giving

  560. and grasping

  561. and getting.

  562. We could say

  563. that the essence

  564. of sin

  565. because if sin

  566. is the opposite

  567. of loving people

  568. then what sin

  569. is

  570. is using

  571. people.

  572. It's getting

  573. what we can

  574. from other people

  575. it's manipulating

  576. them

  577. it's trying

  578. to use

  579. that relationship

  580. to get something

  581. that makes me

  582. feel better

  583. about me.

  584. It's exactly

  585. the opposite

  586. of receive

  587. and give.

  588. it's grasping

  589. and keeping

  590. and think

  591. about the number

  592. of relationships

  593. maybe you're

  594. smarting from

  595. the pain of that

  596. of being treated

  597. that way.

  598. Maybe you can

  599. think of ways

  600. that you

  601. do that yourself

  602. but that's

  603. the fundamental

  604. contrast

  605. deny self

  606. take up

  607. cross

  608. is to receive

  609. as a loved

  610. child

  611. and give

  612. rather than

  613. grasping

  614. to get

  615. what I can

  616. or desperately

  617. defending myself

  618. against perceived

  619. threat.

  620. And right at the

  621. heart of that

  622. then

  623. if that's

  624. to change

  625. from grasping

  626. and getting

  627. to receiving

  628. and giving

  629. is being a

  630. beloved

  631. child of God

  632. someone who's

  633. denied self

  634. takes up

  635. cross

  636. and follows.

  637. This then

  638. creates

  639. and sets

  640. out for us

  641. a pattern

  642. for restored

  643. image.

  644. This is what

  645. the restored

  646. image looks

  647. like

  648. because

  649. Christ is the

  650. one who

  651. supremely

  652. images God

  653. who shows us

  654. what God

  655. is like

  656. and to

  657. be restored

  658. in that image

  659. is to become

  660. more like

  661. Jesus

  662. to do

  663. Jesus

  664. stuff

  665. if you like

  666. in Jesus

  667. ways

  668. and that

  669. is to

  670. love

  671. as

  672. Jesus

  673. loved.

  674. It's about

  675. a revolution

  676. in relationships.

  677. I've totally

  678. lost track

  679. of time.

  680. What time

  681. do you want

  682. me just to

  683. stop right

  684. now?

  685. Keep going.

  686. Stop.

  687. Stop.

  688. Stop.

  689. Soon.

  690. Alright.

  691. Okay.

  692. I totally

  693. have a very

  694. distant relationship

  695. to the concept

  696. of time

  697. and I'm

  698. encouraged

  699. by the fact

  700. that punctuality

  701. is not really

  702. a biblical

  703. concept

  704. that I can

  705. find.

  706. My wife

  707. doesn't buy

  708. this one

  709. at all.

  710. Right.

  711. Okay.

  712. Now,

  713. some of you

  714. are going

  715. to be

  716. thinking,

  717. okay,

  718. that sounds

  719. great in

  720. theory,

  721. receiving,

  722. giving,

  723. not protecting

  724. myself,

  725. not using

  726. others to

  727. get what I

  728. need,

  729. but what

  730. about me?

  731. What's

  732. going to

  733. happen to

  734. me?

  735. Am I

  736. just going

  737. to be

  738. trampled

  739. all over?

  740. Am I

  741. going to

  742. be a

  743. doormat

  744. in every

  745. relationship

  746. that I'm

  747. in?

  748. Is this

  749. a charter

  750. for abusers?

  751. And the

  752. answer to

  753. that is

  754. absolutely

  755. and categorically

  756. no,

  757. that is

  758. not a

  759. charter

  760. for abusers.

  761. Not least

  762. because each

  763. of us is

  764. responsible to

  765. deny self,

  766. take up

  767. cross,

  768. to love

  769. people in

  770. this kind

  771. of way.

  772. And of

  773. course,

  774. one of

  775. those ways

  776. of loving

  777. people is

  778. at times

  779. going to

  780. mean saying

  781. no to

  782. those who

  783. would abuse

  784. and misuse.

  785. But more

  786. fundamentally,

  787. what's going

  788. to happen

  789. if I'm

  790. just giving

  791. myself?

  792. Do I

  793. just empty

  794. out and

  795. burn out?

  796. And the

  797. key really

  798. is not

  799. just in

  800. this idea

  801. of receiving,

  802. obviously,

  803. as beloved

  804. children,

  805. but the

  806. key is in

  807. these words

  808. that Jesus

  809. gives us,

  810. this paradox

  811. at the

  812. heart of

  813. reality.

  814. Jesus

  815. says,

  816. deny self,

  817. take up

  818. cross and

  819. follow,

  820. for whoever

  821. would save

  822. his life

  823. will lose

  824. it.

  825. And whoever

  826. loses his

  827. life for

  828. my sake

  829. will save

  830. it.

  831. And he

  832. goes on,

  833. whoever is

  834. ashamed of

  835. my words,

  836. of him will

  837. the Son of

  838. Man be

  839. ashamed when

  840. he comes.

  841. This is

  842. this amazing

  843. paradox at

  844. the heart

  845. of reality.

  846. This paradox

  847. that if you

  848. try to look

  849. after number

  850. one, look

  851. after self,

  852. then what

  853. Jesus says

  854. is you

  855. actually lose

  856. your life.

  857. This is the

  858. word soul

  859. or tsuke

  860. there.

  861. You lose

  862. your very

  863. self.

  864. If you

  865. try and

  866. protect

  867. yourself by

  868. living

  869. differently,

  870. by avoiding

  871. this pattern,

  872. then actually

  873. it is

  874. inherently

  875. counterproductive

  876. and self-destructive.

  877. It will

  878. never

  879. work.

  880. And think

  881. about, I mean

  882. that's so

  883. obviously true,

  884. isn't it?

  885. Think about

  886. the people

  887. you know

  888. who are

  889. self-centered,

  890. who arrange

  891. life entirely

  892. around their

  893. own pleasures

  894. or their

  895. own fulfillment.

  896. I have,

  897. I can think

  898. of numbers

  899. of people

  900. who swim

  901. across my

  902. eyes

  903. as I think

  904. about that.

  905. Family members,

  906. for example.

  907. And they're the

  908. most miserable

  909. people.

  910. They're proof

  911. of what Jesus

  912. says.

  913. That when

  914. you put

  915. yourself

  916. first in

  917. this kind

  918. of way,

  919. it's

  920. counterproductive.

  921. It doesn't

  922. work anyway.

  923. And Jesus

  924. says, and

  925. whoever loses

  926. his life,

  927. that is,

  928. denies self

  929. and takes

  930. up cross,

  931. lives this

  932. pattern.

  933. That's how

  934. you save.

  935. That's how

  936. you gain.

  937. That's actually

  938. the good

  939. life.

  940. That's fullness

  941. of life.

  942. So that

  943. inherent to

  944. this call

  945. of Jesus

  946. is also

  947. this promise

  948. grounded in

  949. the very

  950. nature of

  951. reality itself

  952. that as

  953. human persons,

  954. this is the

  955. way to

  956. life as

  957. we long

  958. for it

  959. to be.

  960. And it

  961. starts with

  962. getting off

  963. that throne

  964. at the

  965. center.

  966. You are

  967. not God.

  968. You're a

  969. creature.

  970. And you need

  971. to be

  972. reconciled to

  973. that God.

  974. And that

  975. means he

  976. needs to

  977. be the

  978. one in

  979. charge.

  980. And he

  981. needs to

  982. be the

  983. one whose

  984. gift of

  985. new life

  986. we have

  987. received

  988. with open

  989. hands having

  990. let go of

  991. all the rest

  992. of it.

  993. And unless

  994. and until

  995. we do

  996. that,

  997. we are

  998. simply

  999. destroying

  1000. ourselves

  1001. as we

  1002. go about

  1003. trying to

  1004. make life

  1005. work.

  1006. What does

  1007. a society

  1008. look like

  1009. that puts

  1010. self at the

  1011. center in

  1012. this kind

  1013. of way?

  1014. Just look

  1015. outside.

  1016. Just look

  1017. around us.

  1018. It's not

  1019. turning out

  1020. well.

  1021. It really

  1022. isn't.

  1023. There's a

  1024. warning in

  1025. here as

  1026. well though

  1027. just to

  1028. close with.

  1029. Whoever is

  1030. ashamed of

  1031. me and

  1032. my words.

  1033. Now remember

  1034. that's the

  1035. context is

  1036. deny

  1037. self,

  1038. take up

  1039. cross and

  1040. follow.

  1041. And Jesus

  1042. it seems

  1043. to me is

  1044. saying this.

  1045. If you

  1046. try to

  1047. avoid

  1048. this,

  1049. if you

  1050. are too

  1051. ashamed of

  1052. humbling

  1053. yourself enough

  1054. to just

  1055. give yourself

  1056. to others

  1057. the way

  1058. that I

  1059. am

  1060. demonstrating

  1061. to you,

  1062. if you

  1063. try and

  1064. do it

  1065. any other

  1066. way,

  1067. says Jesus,

  1068. I'll be

  1069. ashamed of

  1070. you.

  1071. You're

  1072. turning your

  1073. back on

  1074. me,

  1075. says Jesus.

  1076. It's a

  1077. very,

  1078. very sobering

  1079. warning.

  1080. We might

  1081. put it this

  1082. way and it

  1083. was on a

  1084. slide earlier

  1085. on.

  1086. We can't

  1087. do Jesus

  1088. work in

  1089. non-Jesus

  1090. ways.

  1091. We can't

  1092. go about

  1093. following

  1094. Jesus.

  1095. In ways

  1096. that aren't

  1097. prescribed and

  1098. demonstrated by

  1099. Jesus.

  1100. That seems

  1101. dead obvious,

  1102. doesn't it?

  1103. But one of

  1104. the things we

  1105. see over and

  1106. over again,

  1107. and it's what

  1108. gives the

  1109. church a

  1110. really bad

  1111. name.

  1112. It's given

  1113. the church a

  1114. really bad

  1115. name,

  1116. is that

  1117. instead of

  1118. following this

  1119. example of

  1120. Jesus,

  1121. deny self,

  1122. take up,

  1123. cross,

  1124. and follow,

  1125. we thought we

  1126. can surely

  1127. do it better

  1128. than that.

  1129. There's a

  1130. parallel passage

  1131. in Mark

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  1132. chapter 8 that

  1133. recounts exactly

  1134. the same

  1135. words.

  1136. The difference

  1137. in Mark

  1138. 8 is that

  1139. Jesus has

  1140. just revealed

  1141. his identity,

  1142. who he

  1143. really is,

  1144. and the

  1145. apostle Peter

  1146. then confesses

  1147. Jesus'

  1148. identity.

  1149. And Jesus

  1150. says,

  1151. this means

  1152. my identity,

  1153. my power,

  1154. everything about

  1155. that,

  1156. that means I'm

  1157. going to go

  1158. and be rejected,

  1159. suffer,

  1160. and die in

  1161. Jerusalem.

  1162. and Peter

  1163. says,

  1164. there's got to

  1165. be an easier

  1166. way of doing

  1167. things.

  1168. I've just

  1169. seen you have

  1170. the power to

  1171. calm a storm

  1172. and to heal

  1173. the sick and

  1174. to cleanse

  1175. lepers and to

  1176. do all these

  1177. amazing things.

  1178. How does that

  1179. fit with

  1180. suffering and

  1181. death?

  1182. No,

  1183. no,

  1184. no.

  1185. Use your

  1186. power differently.

  1187. Use it to

  1188. get what you

  1189. want and to

  1190. do what you

  1191. want.

  1192. And Jesus

  1193. responds to

  1194. that,

  1195. that temptation

  1196. to say,

  1197. there's got to

  1198. be an easier

  1199. way than

  1200. deny self,

  1201. take up

  1202. cross and

  1203. follow.

  1204. There's got to

  1205. be a more

  1206. efficient way

  1207. of getting

  1208. the work

  1209. done.

  1210. Jesus'

  1211. response to

  1212. Peter is,

  1213. get behind

  1214. me,

  1215. Satan.

  1216. And that's

  1217. still Jesus'

  1218. response when

  1219. you and I

  1220. come to him

  1221. and say,

  1222. there's got to

  1223. be an easier

  1224. way,

  1225. a more

  1226. efficient way.

  1227. We can do

  1228. this work

  1229. much better

  1230. than the way

  1231. of the cross.

  1232. There's much

  1233. easier ways of

  1234. doing it,

  1235. there's much

  1236. more pleasant,

  1237. less painful

  1238. ways of doing

  1239. it,

  1240. and Jesus

  1241. says,

  1242. get behind

  1243. me.

  1244. Because this

  1245. is the way.

  1246. If you try

  1247. to save your

  1248. life by avoiding

  1249. this cross-shaped

  1250. living,

  1251. you will lose

  1252. it,

  1253. you will destroy

  1254. everything,

  1255. and you'll

  1256. destroy those

  1257. around you as

  1258. well.

  1259. Deny self,

  1260. take up

  1261. cross and

  1262. follow,

  1263. and there

  1264. is life,

  1265. there is

  1266. beauty.

  1267. C.S. Lewis

  1268. puts it like

  1269. this,

  1270. and I think

  1271. it's a really

  1272. helpful way

  1273. of putting it.

  1274. When God

  1275. talks of

  1276. their losing

  1277. themselves,

  1278. he means

  1279. only abandoning

  1280. the clamor

  1281. of self-will.

  1282. Once they've

  1283. done that,

  1284. he really

  1285. gives them

  1286. back all

  1287. their personality

  1288. and boasts

  1289. that when

  1290. they are

  1291. wholly his,

  1292. they will

  1293. be more

  1294. themselves

  1295. than ever.

  1296. self-fulfillment

  1297. come through

  1298. self-denial

  1299. or through

  1300. self-indulgence.

  1301. It comes

  1302. through self-giving

  1303. with Christ

  1304. on the throne

  1305. of our lives.

  1306. I had some

  1307. questions.

  1308. I'm just going

  1309. to leave them

  1310. up there.

  1311. You can look

  1312. at them if you

  1313. want.

  1314. But one of

  1315. the things

  1316. I'd love you

  1317. to do is a

  1318. little imaginative

  1319. exercise as I

  1320. just go and

  1321. sit down.

  1322. Imagine,

  1323. just think

  1324. about your

  1325. own life,

  1326. your own

  1327. relationships,

  1328. perhaps your

  1329. family,

  1330. your workplace.

  1331. Think maybe

  1332. more broadly,

  1333. your community,

  1334. your neighbourhood,

  1335. this country.

  1336. What would

  1337. it look like

  1338. with Jesus'

  1339. will,

  1340. with Jesus'

  1341. pattern of

  1342. living?

  1343. What would

  1344. it look like

  1345. for Jesus

  1346. to have

  1347. his way

  1348. in your

  1349. family?

  1350. For fathers

  1351. to take

  1352. seriously what

  1353. it means to

  1354. deny self,

  1355. take up

  1356. cross and

  1357. follow,

  1358. and to

  1359. seek to

  1360. serve

  1361. their

  1362. children

  1363. and their

  1364. wives

  1365. instead of

  1366. dominate and

  1367. use them?

  1368. What would

  1369. that look

  1370. like?

  1371. Wouldn't

  1372. that be

  1373. great?

  1374. What would

  1375. it look

  1376. like in

  1377. the workplace

  1378. for people

  1379. to understand

  1380. that what

  1381. they've been

  1382. given is

  1383. for the

  1384. blessing and

  1385. benefit of

  1386. others and

  1387. not a

  1388. means of

  1389. exploiting and

  1390. dominating

  1391. others?

  1392. What might

  1393. society more

  1394. widely look

  1395. like?

  1396. And how

  1397. would that

  1398. happen unless

  1399. people like

  1400. you and

  1401. me say,

  1402. yes,

  1403. Lord,

  1404. I receive

  1405. this gift

  1406. of being a

  1407. beloved child

  1408. and let me

  1409. just show

  1410. that same

  1411. love to

  1412. others in

  1413. every

  1414. interaction.

  1415. God

  1416. will

  1417. love to

  1418. God

  1419. let's

  1420. pray together

  1421. as we

  1422. pray that

  1423. the Lord

  1424. would have

  1425. mercy on

  1426. us,

  1427. enable us

  1428. to be

  1429. channels of

  1430. this blessing

  1431. to those

  1432. around us.

  1433. Our

  1434. Father,

  1435. thank you.

  1436. Thank you.

  1437. None of

  1438. this depends

  1439. upon us

  1440. being clever

  1441. people who

  1442. sort

  1443. ourselves out

  1444. and try

  1445. ever harder

  1446. to fix

  1447. things for

  1448. ourselves.

  1449. Thank you,

  1450. Lord,

  1451. for that

  1452. liberating

  1453. call to

  1454. abandon

  1455. the throne,

  1456. to joyfully

  1457. welcome

  1458. Jesus as

  1459. our Lord,

  1460. as the

  1461. one who's

  1462. in charge.

  1463. Lord,

  1464. please would

  1465. for each

  1466. one of us

  1467. sitting here

  1468. today,

  1469. would we

  1470. have either

  1471. for the

  1472. first time

  1473. or a

  1474. renewed

  1475. sense that

  1476. we are

  1477. loved

  1478. children of

  1479. the living

  1480. God,

  1481. and Lord,

  1482. might we

  1483. then pour

  1484. out that

  1485. love in

  1486. all of our

  1487. relationships

  1488. with those

  1489. around about

  1490. us.

  1491. Let it be

  1492. so,

  1493. Lord.

  1494. Have mercy

  1495. on us,

  1496. we pray,

  1497. in Jesus'

  1498. name.

  1499. Amen.
