  1. Thanks so much, Alistair. My name's Archie. I'm the pastor in training here.

  2. And it's my job this morning to open God's word for us and to let him speak.

  3. And before we do that together, why don't I pray just to prepare our hearts to hear from him.

  4. Heavenly Father, as we hear from you in your word this morning, as we look to your son,

  5. I pray that by your Holy Spirit, the words of my mouth and the meditations of all of our hearts would be acceptable to you this morning.

  6. Amen.

  7. I want to begin this morning with a story.

  8. And this story is a completely made up story, but hopefully it gets us feeling some of the weight of this passage.

  9. It's a story about Ahmed. Ahmed grew up in inner city Birmingham.

  10. He was a happy kid, happy at school. He had lots of friends.

  11. But when he was six years old, his best friend, Jonathan, was moving away.

  12. He was moving to Carlisle.

  13. Ahmed and Jonathan stayed in touch. Their parents got on quite well.

  14. They even went on holiday together over the next couple of years, that kind of thing.

  15. But school definitely wasn't as good now for Ahmed now that Jonathan had left.

  16. They were still best friends, but life was just that little bit sadder.

  17. A couple of years later, and the good news, one day Ahmed got home from school.

  18. His parents sat him down.

  19. His mum had got a new job.

  20. It wasn't far from Carlisle, and they were going to be moving.

  21. And so at the end of the summer, they were going to be moving up there.

  22. Ahmed was going to get to go to school with his best friend, Jonathan, again.

  23. They were on holiday together that summer, just a couple of weeks before the move.

  24. And the boys were so excited.

  25. You can imagine them planning their first day back at school together again.

  26. And then the day came.

  27. Ahmed arrived at this new school in Carlisle, and it was strange.

  28. See, his school in Birmingham was just really multicultural.

  29. Lots of kids that looked like him, who had families like his.

  30. But here, it was just so obvious, as soon as he arrived in the playground,

  31. all of the other kids at this school were white.

  32. And when he got to registration, he realized that he wasn't going to be in Jonathan's class.

  33. And everyone there was looking at him and whispering, some of them openly pointing and laughing.

  34. No one said hello.

  35. No one welcomed him.

  36. No one sat next to him.

  37. He could not wait for the first break time to get out into the playground to find Jonathan.

  38. The bell goes.

  39. It's break time straight out into the playground.

  40. And there's Jonathan.

  41. He's with a group of friends.

  42. And Ahmed notices that some of them in this circle were those in his class.

  43. Some were even those who had been pointing and laughing at him.

  44. So he nervously approaches his best friend.

  45. And Jonathan just totally ignores him.

  46. The other kids ask if Jonathan knows this new kid.

  47. He says he's never seen him before.

  48. And he turns his back.

  49. It's a horrible betrayal, that, isn't it?

  50. I wonder if you've ever been betrayed.

  51. Maybe betrayed like that.

  52. Just think for a moment how that feels.

  53. Betrayal is horrible, isn't it?

  54. Very often when we're teaching children the gospel, we use this sort of metaphor, that Jesus wants to be your friend.

  55. You've done things that would upset him, but he's willing to forgive you.

  56. He wants to be your friend.

  57. And that can be quite helpful, I think.

  58. But if I can put it like this.

  59. If you are a Christian here this morning, and Jesus is your friend, well, have you ever been a Jonathan-like friend?

  60. I know I have.

  61. Privately, Jesus and I are best friends.

  62. But when it comes down to it, faced with temptation, in my weakness, even the merest temptation,

  63. so often I can pretend it was as though I never knew him.

  64. This passage that we're in today, we're told that both Judas and Peter are going to betray Jesus in their way.

  65. Judas is going to hand Jesus over to the authorities.

  66. Peter is going to deny that he ever knew him.

  67. And if you're at all familiar with that story, it's very easy to sort of take the emotion out of it, but it's horrible.

  68. This is a brutal story.

  69. And my prayer for us this morning is that we would feel that.

  70. And that we would respond rightly to it.

  71. Key question for us then is this.

  72. What might it mean to betray or deny Jesus today?

  73. And when we do, what next?

  74. Maybe you've explicitly done that.

  75. A co-worker or a friend at uni or at school is asked,

  76. are you a Christian?

  77. And your response, what, me?

  78. A Christian?

  79. Maybe it's more subtle than that.

  80. Well, yeah, I am a Christian, but I'm not one of those Christians.

  81. We might not have done it with our words like that, but there are ways.

  82. I think there are lots of ways for me that we betray Jesus,

  83. that we deny that we belong to him,

  84. that we do that in the way that we live.

  85. Right?

  86. If we're honest, Judas, in this passage, his betrayal is going to send Jesus to the cross.

  87. But my sin, it hammers in the nails.

  88. To betray Jesus, it means that you've chosen to follow him,

  89. that you are a Christian, and yet you continue to deny it

  90. in what you say and in what you do.

  91. But the message here this morning is not, and so take a good look at yourself.

  92. Clean up your act.

  93. Commit a bit more earnestly, and don't you dare deny or betray again.

  94. That is not the message here at all.

  95. Instead, as we answer this question,

  96. when we betray or deny Jesus,

  97. when you experience the crushing weight of guilt,

  98. where do you go with it?

  99. Where are you going to run?

  100. That's what we're going to do this morning.

  101. That's where we're heading.

  102. But where have we been in this series in John's Gospel?

  103. We've returned, I guess, almost every week to chapter 20 near the end of the book.

  104. John gives us his purpose.

  105. He says this,

  106. Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples,

  107. which are not recorded in this book.

  108. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah,

  109. the Son of God,

  110. and that by believing, you may have life in his name.

  111. In other words,

  112. John wants his readers to see all the incredible stuff that Jesus did,

  113. and to understand that all of it was supposed to point to something much bigger.

  114. And so when John records Jesus turning water into wine,

  115. when Jesus heals the lame and drives out a demon,

  116. when he feeds a crowd of people,

  117. when he walks on water,

  118. it's all supposed to point to something about who Jesus is,

  119. and the big thing that he came to do.

  120. And throughout this book,

  121. as if to make that really clear,

  122. John repeats this phrase,

  123. his hour had not yet come.

  124. Nine times that phrase is repeated through the book,

  125. his hour has not yet come,

  126. until at last,

  127. in John chapter 12,

    John 12:23

  128. verse 23,

  129. we saw this a few weeks ago,

  130. the hour has come.

  131. For the Son of Man,

  132. that is just a title for Jesus,

  133. for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  134. The hour has come.

  135. It's just around the corner.

  136. And we saw last week with JT,

  137. as chapter 13 starts back in verse 1,

  138. Jesus knew that the hour had come

  139. for him to leave this world

  140. and go to the Father.

  141. So you see,

  142. we're in this new section in John's Gospel.

  143. You might even divide John's Gospel into two halves,

  144. chapter 12, verse 23,

  145. kind of from the hour has not yet come

  146. to where we are now.

  147. The hour has come.

  148. And we're in this room

  149. in the passage that Alistair has read for us.

  150. We're in this room that we first saw that last week with JT.

  151. It's the same room in verse 2.

  152. Jesus and the 12,

  153. they're enjoying the evening meal together

  154. and it's Passover.

  155. JT helped us see last week

  156. how the foot-washing episode

  157. in the first half of the chapter

  158. is both a wonderful example

  159. of loving service

  160. and also a symbol

  161. of the cleansing for sin

  162. that will be available at the cross.

  163. That Jesus wants his disciples,

  164. that he wants those who follow him

  165. to likewise serve one another

  166. and to point one another

  167. to his work on the cross.

  168. That's where we've been so far.

  169. And here's where we're going this morning.

  170. That passage that Alistair has just read for us.

  171. I think it's got quite a clear structure.

  172. Verses 18 to 30,

  173. Judas is going to betray Jesus.

  174. Verses 31 to 35,

  175. Jesus is going to the cross.

  176. And verses 36 to 38,

  177. Peter is going to deny Jesus.

  178. So first, Judas is going to betray Jesus.

  179. See in verse 18,

  180. Jesus has just been explaining

  181. the foot-washing thing.

  182. And he says in verse 18,

  183. he says,

  184. this isn't all of you.

  185. I know those I have chosen,

  186. but this is to fulfill

  187. the passage of scripture.

  188. He who shared my bread

  189. has turned against me.

  190. And if you're not in the Pew Bible,

  191. you might have something like

  192. he lifted his heel against me.

  193. And that's just kind of a cultural way

  194. of saying he stuck

  195. the middle finger up at me.

  196. He betrayed me.

  197. And Jesus is quoting from Psalm 41,

  198. where King David's own son betrays him.

  199. In other words,

  200. and we'll talk about this

  201. a bit more in a second,

  202. it's a family betrayal.

  203. One who sat at the table with me,

  204. shared food with me,

  205. he will be the one to betray me.

  206. And notice in verse 21

  207. that that troubles Jesus.

  208. He knows it's coming.

  209. Of course he does.

  210. He's the sovereign God of the universe.

  211. But he has taken on human flesh

  212. and he knows what it is

  213. to feel the pain of that betrayal.

  214. Just as you and I might feel it.

  215. Just as you can imagine

  216. Ahmed in that story

  217. would have felt it.

  218. But the disciples don't know

  219. who he's talking about.

  220. I see in verse 22,

  221. they stared at each other.

  222. You can picture it wide-eyed,

  223. looking around.

  224. Which one of us is it going to be?

  225. And then in verse 23,

  226. have a look at verse 23.

  227. One of them,

  228. the disciple whom Jesus loved

  229. was reclining next to him.

  230. Simon Peter in verse 24

  231. tells this disciple

  232. to ask Jesus who it is.

  233. And then verse 25,

  234. that's exactly what he does.

  235. Just a brief aside here.

  236. The disciple whom Jesus loved

  237. is John,

  238. the author of this gospel.

  239. He's referring to himself.

  240. It might not be obvious here,

  241. but we get it explicitly

  242. right at the end of the book

  243. in chapter 21,

  244. verses 22 to 24.

  245. If you want to do that,

  246. check that out in your own time.

  247. But it is a very strange way

  248. for someone to refer

  249. to themselves, isn't it?

  250. What is John getting at?

  251. Is he somehow

  252. especially loved by Jesus?

  253. Jesus?

  254. I think that's how I had always read this.

  255. Almost like a kind of

  256. humble brag from John.

  257. You think you're loved?

  258. Check me out.

  259. But I don't think

  260. that's what it is at all.

  261. Instead, what I think

  262. he is actually saying is this.

  263. This is the most important thing

  264. about me.

  265. It might be true of you as well,

  266. but I am loved by Jesus.

  267. That's who I am.

  268. It's why I'm writing.

  269. It's my motivation.

  270. It's my identity.

  271. In fact, it's all you need

  272. to know about me.

  273. Jesus loves me.

  274. And so knowing that Jesus loves him,

  275. verse 25, he asks,

  276. Lord, who is it?

  277. Who is it that will betray you?

  278. And Jesus responds, verse 26,

  279. it is the one to whom

  280. I will give this piece of bread

  281. when I have dipped it in the dish.

  282. Apparently, that was a sort of sign

  283. of honoring someone,

  284. a bit like we might raise a toast

  285. to someone at a dinner today.

  286. And Jesus, still in verse 26,

  287. he dips the bread,

  288. he gives it to Judas.

  289. It's a special kind of honoring.

  290. Yes, he's saying,

  291. you will betray me,

  292. but he honors him as he does that.

  293. And remember I said that Judas' betrayal

  294. was a family betrayal

  295. and the Passover feast

  296. that they're sharing together,

  297. that was a family meal.

  298. And here, Jesus is sharing it

  299. with his closest followers

  300. as if to say,

  301. this is my family.

  302. And Judas is included in that.

  303. Jesus washes Judas' feet

  304. earlier in this chapter.

  305. And Jesus, as he quotes from Psalm 41,

  306. he says, just like David,

  307. in fact, in fulfillment of David,

  308. I'm going to be betrayed

  309. by my own family.

  310. And more than that,

  311. as he hands him the bread,

  312. as he honors him in that way,

  313. he says, Judas,

  314. you are part of my beloved family.

  315. He extends grace and honor

  316. and the offer of life to him,

  317. even in that final moment.

  318. And it is final for immediately,

  319. verse 27,

  320. as Judas takes the bread,

  321. he decides finally to betray Jesus

  322. and Satan entered into him.

  323. I don't think that's to say

  324. that he's now possessed by Satan

  325. or something like that

  326. and no longer responsible

  327. for his actions.

  328. It's not as though Judas was innocent

  329. up until this point.

  330. In chapter 12,

  331. John tells us that Judas used to

  332. help himself to the money

  333. and the money bag.

  334. And in verse 2 of our chapter,

  335. we saw that the devil

  336. was already at work on Judas

  337. to betray Jesus.

  338. But this is a final rejection,

  339. a rejection of Jesus's offer of love.

  340. It sort of seals the deal,

  341. signs the fated betrayal

  342. as Judas finally allows evil

  343. and darkness to overcome him.

  344. In other words,

  345. I think this is the point

  346. of no return.

  347. His heart is now so hard

  348. that there is no going back.

  349. The disciples,

  350. as is typical of them

  351. in John's gospel,

  352. continue to fail to understand.

  353. See in verse 29,

  354. they think Jesus is sending Judas

  355. out for supplies

  356. or maybe to give to the poor.

  357. He was the money bag guy after all.

  358. But Judas,

  359. he takes the bread

  360. and he heads out into the night.

  361. As Satan enters Judas,

  362. so Judas enters into the darkness.

  363. Earlier in the week,

  364. Cater told me about this painting

  365. that's on the screen.

  366. It's an amazing painting.

  367. It's currently hanging

  368. in the National Gallery

  369. down there on Princes Street.

  370. You can go and check it out.

  371. It's by a French artist, Poussin.

  372. And just see the way

  373. that he uses light

  374. to tell the story,

  375. just like John does

  376. in his gospel.

  377. That's Judas there on the left

  378. as you look at it.

  379. He's in the dark.

  380. His back is turned to Jesus

  381. and the disciples

  382. and he's heading out

  383. into the night.

  384. Judas is going to betray Jesus.

  385. Next, Jesus is going to the cross.

  386. And we'll see here

  387. that the cross is glorious,

  388. that the cross is necessary

  389. and that the cross is love.

  390. Have a look at verse 31.

  391. When he was gone.

  392. In other words,

  393. now that Judas has left the room,

  394. Jesus can really get going

  395. on his teaching and prayer

  396. that will come

  397. in the following chapters.

  398. And Jesus says,

  399. now the Son of Man

  400. is glorified

  401. and God is glorified in him.

  402. If God is glorified in him,

  403. God will glorify the Son

  404. in himself

  405. and will glorify him at once.

  406. Now, those verses

  407. are obviously quite difficult

  408. to understand

  409. and see the logic of,

  410. especially I think

  411. because on the Pew Bibles

  412. they're over the page

  413. from one another,

  414. aren't they?

  415. So it's hard to follow.

  416. But let's just try

  417. and see the logic of this.

  418. First, the Son of Man

  419. is glorified.

  420. That is Jesus the man,

  421. the human,

  422. shown to be glorious.

  423. And then God is glorified in him.

  424. That I think is the divine nature

  425. of Jesus.

  426. God the Son

  427. will be glorified

  428. in Jesus the human.

  429. It's true in that direction.

  430. The second half of the verse

  431. just says this is true

  432. in the other direction too.

  433. That is to say,

  434. Jesus' humanity

  435. and his divinity

  436. will both be glorified

  437. and what is to come.

  438. But what does it mean

  439. to be glorified?

  440. I think it might be helpful,

  441. first of all,

  442. to say that you and I

  443. cannot add to God's glory.

  444. Maybe you've heard that

  445. like a sports person

  446. after they've won a match

  447. or something might say,

  448. all glory to God.

  449. Or songs that we sing

  450. where we say

  451. we glorify his name.

  452. When we do that,

  453. it's vital for us

  454. to understand

  455. that we're not adding to God

  456. something that wasn't

  457. already there.

  458. Instead,

  459. when we say

  460. that we glorify God,

  461. we're revealing

  462. or showing

  463. something that already is,

  464. showing God to be

  465. who he already is,

  466. who God really is.

  467. In Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  468. Isaiah sees the Lord

  469. in his throne room

  470. and the seraphim

  471. calling to one another.

  472. And here's what they say,

  473. holy,

  474. holy,

  475. holy.

  476. Three times they say,

  477. holy.

  478. That is who God is

  479. in himself.

  480. As he sits on his throne

  481. in his splendor

  482. and his majesty.

  483. In other words,

  484. God's holiness

  485. is kind of like

  486. his infinite worth.

  487. God is holy.

  488. And the seraphim say,

  489. holy,

  490. holy,

  491. holy is the Lord almighty.

  492. The whole earth

  493. is full of his.

  494. And you'd expect them

  495. to say holiness,

  496. I guess,

  497. wouldn't you?

  498. And maybe that phrase

  499. is familiar to you

  500. and so you know

  501. that that's not what they say.

  502. What they say is

  503. the whole earth

  504. is full of his glory.

  505. In other words,

  506. God's glory,

  507. for God to be glorified,

  508. it is for his holiness,

  509. his infinite worth,

  510. to be made public,

  511. to be visible

  512. in all the earth.

  513. And so in Exodus chapter 33,

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  514. where Moses asks God

  515. to show him his glory,

  516. he is asking God

  517. to make his holiness,

  518. to make that known.

  519. And here is how God responds.

  520. I will cause all my goodness

  521. to pass in front of you

  522. and I will proclaim my name,

  523. the Lord,

  524. in your presence.

  525. I will have mercy

  526. on whom I will have mercy

  527. and I will have compassion

  528. on whom I will have compassion.

  529. What does God's glory look like

  530. as he reveals it to Moses?

  531. It is his goodness.

  532. It is the name,

  533. Lord Yahweh,

  534. the name that says,

  535. I am faithful to my promises.

  536. It is his mercy

  537. and it is his compassion.

  538. And so here in our passage

  539. this morning,

  540. Jesus is saying

  541. that the glory of God

  542. will be seen

  543. in what he is about to do.

  544. For God to be glorified

  545. is for God to be seen

  546. for who he is.

  547. And nowhere in all of scripture

  548. and nowhere in all of history

  549. is that more true than here.

  550. At the cross.

  551. Notice in verses 31 and 32

  552. of our passage

  553. that this glorifying,

  554. it happens now

  555. at the start of the verse

  556. and it is at once

  557. at the end of the verse.

  558. This is the hour

  559. at which he will be glorified.

  560. It's the cross.

  561. Nowhere does Jesus look

  562. more humiliated and defeated.

  563. Nowhere does he look

  564. less like God himself.

  565. And yet nowhere is his glory

  566. more evident than this.

  567. At his lowest point,

  568. he is raised up.

  569. At his most defeated,

  570. he is defeating death.

  571. On the cross as he dies,

  572. pouring out mercy

  573. and compassion

  574. and making a way

  575. for you and for me

  576. to know the Father.

  577. When he looks most human,

  578. he is most gloriously God.

  579. Good and faithful

  580. to his promises

  581. and merciful and compassionate.

  582. Do you see how glorious

  583. the cross is?

  584. And the cross is also necessary.

  585. See how tenderly

  586. Jesus speaks to his disciples

  587. in verse 33.

  588. He says,

  589. my children

  590. or little children.

  591. And he tells them

  592. that he won't be with them

  593. for much longer

  594. and that they can't come with him.

  595. We saw back in chapter 8

  596. of John's Gospel,

  597. Jesus,

  598. as John refers to here,

  599. said the same thing

  600. to the Jews,

  601. that they can't follow him

  602. where he's going.

  603. Why does he say it?

  604. Well,

  605. in chapter 8,

  606. he says specifically

  607. it's because they will die

  608. in their sin.

  609. In other words,

  610. Jesus is going to be

  611. with the Father,

  612. eternal resurrection life

  613. and it is impossible

  614. to follow him there

  615. if you remain

  616. wrapped up in sin.

  617. That was true

  618. of the Jews.

  619. It's true

  620. of the disciples

  621. as he speaks to them here

  622. and it is true

  623. of us today.

  624. This is the great problem

  625. to which the cross

  626. is the answer.

  627. Here's why

  628. the cross is necessary.

  629. We are human beings

  630. wrapped up in sin.

  631. We all are.

  632. It's the default position.

  633. And because of that,

  634. we cannot go

  635. where Jesus says

  636. that he is going.

  637. We need the cross.

  638. It's necessary

  639. because notice

  640. down in verse 36,

  641. he says,

  642. you cannot follow now

  643. to Simon Peter.

  644. You cannot follow now,

  645. but you will follow later.

  646. In other words,

  647. if you want to follow me,

  648. you need me to go first.

  649. You can't come to the Father

  650. and enjoy eternal resurrection life

  651. unless I first go to the cross

  652. and deal with your sin.

  653. This is the gospel's answer

  654. to that great problem

  655. for the Jews,

  656. for Peter,

  657. for the disciples,

  658. for us.

  659. None of us can enter

  660. into eternal life.

  661. None of us can follow Jesus

  662. to the Father

  663. unless he has dealt

  664. with our sin on the cross,

  665. unless he has been shown

  666. to be glorious in that way

  667. as he takes all of our sin

  668. and our shame

  669. and our betrayal

  670. and denial of him

  671. and he bears the weight

  672. of the guilt of that

  673. on his shoulders.

  674. And unless we look to him

  675. in that moment,

  676. unless we recognize his glory

  677. and humble ourselves

  678. and trust him,

  679. only then will we follow him

  680. through death

  681. to resurrection glory.

  682. The cross is glorious.

  683. The cross is necessary.

  684. And finally,

  685. the cross is love.

  686. See, Jesus gives them

  687. this command

  688. in verses 34 and 35.

  689. A new command I give you,

  690. love one another

  691. as I have loved you.

  692. So you must love one another.

  693. By this,

  694. everyone will know

  695. that you are my disciples

  696. if you love one another.

  697. This command isn't really new at all.

  698. Loving your neighbor

  699. was central

  700. to the Old Testament law.

  701. God had always commanded

  702. that they love one another.

  703. But of course,

  704. there is a sense

  705. in which it is new.

  706. Jesus isn't lying.

  707. And as Jesus literally

  708. puts meat onto the bones

  709. of that command,

  710. he takes it

  711. and he lives it

  712. and he makes it flesh.

  713. It's a new command

  714. insofar as Jesus

  715. has given it a context

  716. as I have loved you.

  717. And that is ultimately

  718. expressed at the cross.

  719. The incredible,

  720. self-sacrificial,

  721. life-giving love.

  722. As Jesus lays down

  723. his life in love

  724. to give life

  725. to those who follow him.

  726. The cross is love.

  727. And as he explains this,

  728. Jesus is really preparing

  729. his disciples

  730. for his departure.

  731. He says,

  732. this is how you are to live,

  733. to echo the self-giving love

  734. of the cross amongst you.

  735. And this is how those

  736. in your community

  737. will know

  738. that you follow Jesus

  739. as you love one another

  740. like this.

  741. And we talked about this

  742. a bit last week with JT.

  743. Maybe you talked about it

  744. in your growth groups

  745. this week too.

  746. We did.

  747. Because this remains true

  748. for us.

  749. As we love one another

  750. in various ways,

  751. so we point one another

  752. to the love of Jesus

  753. on the cross.

  754. The glorious cross.

  755. The necessary cross.

  756. The cross where God's love

  757. is ultimately expressed

  758. for us.

  759. But Peter,

  760. he still can't get over

  761. what Jesus has said

  762. in verse 33.

  763. He can't get over the fact

  764. that Jesus is going to leave.

  765. And so this is where we move

  766. from Jesus is going

  767. to the cross

  768. to Peter is going

  769. to deny Jesus.

  770. This is our final point

  771. and it won't take very long,

  772. I promise.

  773. See in verse 36

  774. Peter's question.

  775. Where are you going?

  776. Where is Jesus going?

  777. Why can't we go with him?

  778. Again, Jesus' response.

  779. We've seen it already.

  780. You can't follow now

  781. but you will follow later.

  782. Peter doesn't understand

  783. and he says in verse 37

  784. I will follow you.

  785. I would even lay down

  786. my life for you.

  787. See how zealous

  788. and forthright Peter is

  789. but he's misunderstanding.

  790. He thinks Jesus is going

  791. on some earthly journey

  792. that might result

  793. in his death.

  794. He doesn't realise

  795. that he needs Jesus

  796. to die for him

  797. and instead

  798. he wants to die

  799. for Jesus.

  800. Peter wants to do

  801. the saving

  802. and Jesus says

  803. verse 38

  804. you can make

  805. all your promises now

  806. but you will deny me.

  807. You will disown me

  808. three times

  809. before the rooster crows.

  810. Peter will deny Jesus

  811. as we read on

  812. over the next few weeks

  813. we'll see he does

  814. just that.

  815. I began this morning

  816. with that story

  817. of betrayal

  818. of Ahmed

  819. and Jonathan

  820. the betrayal

  821. and denial

  822. of a best friend.

  823. It's brutal

  824. and it's brutal

  825. here in John's Gospel too

  826. as we've seen

  827. the big movements

  828. of the plot

  829. in this passage

  830. as Judas

  831. is going to betray

  832. Jesus

  833. as Jesus

  834. will be glorified

  835. at the cross

  836. and as Peter

  837. will deny

  838. Jesus too.

  839. Two of his

  840. closest friends

  841. it's brutal

  842. but as we

  843. put all of that

  844. together

  845. notice the importance

  846. for us this morning

  847. because it is also

  848. brutal when we

  849. betray

  850. and deny Jesus

  851. and in some ways

  852. we could describe

  853. all of our sin

  854. like this

  855. as we deny

  856. the one who

  857. created us

  858. and I think

  859. especially brutal

  860. if you're a Christian

  861. here this morning

  862. adopted sons

  863. and daughters

  864. of our creator

  865. in him

  866. followers of Jesus

  867. and yet there are

  868. ways aren't there

  869. that we continue

  870. to betray

  871. and deny him

  872. still

  873. and so what

  874. do we do?

  875. We've reached

  876. the end of the story

  877. here

  878. the climax

  879. the last hour

  880. we have these

  881. two men

  882. Judas

  883. who followed

  884. Jesus

  885. but never

  886. trusted him

  887. who never

  888. confessed him

  889. as the son

  890. of God

  891. the Messiah

  892. the Christ

  893. who never

  894. repented

  895. we have Peter

  896. often

  897. misunderstanding

  898. always zealous

  899. always the activist

  900. he wants to lay

  901. down his life

  902. for Jesus

  903. and not have

  904. Jesus lay down

  905. his life

  906. for him

  907. but despite

  908. that Peter

  909. who trusted

  910. Jesus

  911. who confessed

  912. him to be

  913. the son of God

  914. the Christ

  915. the Messiah

  916. and who we'll see

  917. in a few weeks

  918. time

  919. does repent

  920. the question

  921. for us

  922. this morning

  923. then is not

  924. simply

  925. will I betray

  926. or deny

  927. Jesus

  928. the question

  929. is when

  930. I betray

  931. and deny

  932. Jesus

  933. will I be

  934. Judas

  935. or will I

  936. be Peter

  937. where will

  938. I run

  939. because if

  940. like Judas

  941. you continue

  942. out into

  943. the dark

  944. this is what

  945. happens

  946. as your

  947. heart

  948. becomes

  949. increasingly

  950. hard

  951. it will

  952. become

  953. easier

  954. and easier

  955. to continue

  956. in your

  957. sin

  958. you will

  959. continue

  960. to convince

  961. yourself

  962. that there's

  963. no harm

  964. done

  965. and it

  966. will be

  967. harder

  968. and harder

  969. to return

  970. to him

  971. and it's

  972. very easy

  973. for us

  974. to be like

  975. Peter

  976. too

  977. to want

  978. to save

  979. ourselves

  980. when we

  981. betray

  982. or deny

  983. Jesus

  984. we want

  985. something

  986. to do

  987. don't we

  988. to a

  989. prayer

  990. to say

  991. or an

  992. action

  993. to perform

  994. something

  995. concrete

  996. to pin

  997. our renewed

  998. faith

  999. to

  1000. and it's

  1001. subtle

  1002. but wrapped

  1003. up in that

  1004. instinct

  1005. is that we

  1006. want to

  1007. earn our

  1008. way back

  1009. instead

  1010. when we

  1011. betray

  1012. or deny

  1013. Jesus

  1014. would you

  1015. remember

  1016. what you

  1017. have already

  1018. received

  1019. look at

  1020. the glorious

  1021. cross

  1022. notice how

  1023. this passage

  1024. is structured

  1025. with the

  1026. betrayal

  1027. and the

  1028. denial

  1029. either side

  1030. but with

  1031. the glory

  1032. of the

  1033. necessary

  1034. and loving

  1035. cross

  1036. in the

  1037. middle

  1038. it's as

  1039. if John

  1040. is saying

  1041. the answer

  1042. to the

  1043. betrayal

  1044. the answer

  1045. to the

  1046. denial

  1047. the answer

  1048. to all

  1049. of our

  1050. sin

  1051. it's here

  1052. it's

  1053. Jesus

  1054. glorified

  1055. on the

  1056. cross

  1057. shown

  1058. to be

  1059. the loving

  1060. faithful

  1061. merciful

  1062. and compassionate

  1063. God

  1064. that he

  1065. is

  1066. making a

  1067. way for

  1068. all of

  1069. our sin

  1070. to be

  1071. forgiven

  1072. and making

  1073. a way

  1074. for us

  1075. to know

  1076. him

  1077. it is

  1078. the centre

  1079. of this

  1080. little bit

  1081. of John's

  1082. gospel

  1083. but it

  1084. is the

  1085. centre

  1086. of history

  1087. and it

  1088. is the

  1089. centre

  1090. of your

  1091. story

  1092. if you're

  1093. a Christian

  1094. here this

  1095. morning

  1096. let me

  1097. close

  1098. with this

  1099. this poem

  1100. Glenn Scrivener

  1101. wrote this

  1102. poem

  1103. I gave

  1104. my life

  1105. to Jesus

  1106. it's

  1107. brilliant

  1108. it's

  1109. well worth

  1110. looking it

  1111. up

  1112. that's

  1113. just

  1114. the

  1115. first

  1116. verse

  1117. but notice

  1118. how it

  1119. begins

  1120. I gave

  1121. my life

  1122. to Jesus

  1123. about a

  1124. thousand

  1125. times

  1126. and he

  1127. tells the

  1128. story of

  1129. how he

  1130. committed

  1131. his life

  1132. to Jesus

  1133. at a

  1134. camp

  1135. as a

  1136. teenager

  1137. and then

  1138. he walked

  1139. away

  1140. and a few

  1141. months later

  1142. another

  1143. camp

  1144. another

  1145. conversion

  1146. and the

  1147. cycle

  1148. kind of

  1149. repeats itself

  1150. throughout the

  1151. poem

  1152. a cycle

  1153. that ultimately

  1154. was all about

  1155. Glenn

  1156. about Glenn's

  1157. coming to

  1158. Jesus

  1159. about Glenn's

  1160. sin

  1161. about Glenn's

  1162. prayer

  1163. and Glenn's

  1164. response

  1165. until one day

  1166. he started

  1167. reading the

  1168. Bible for

  1169. himself

  1170. and he

  1171. saw there

  1172. that he

  1173. wasn't the

  1174. centre

  1175. of the

  1176. story

  1177. at all

  1178. he'd

  1179. always

  1180. been

  1181. taught

  1182. that the

  1183. important

  1184. thing

  1185. was his

  1186. response

  1187. about what

  1188. he might

  1189. do

  1190. but as

  1191. he read

  1192. God's

  1193. word

  1194. he saw

  1195. that the

  1196. gospel

  1197. wasn't

  1198. about Glenn

  1199. but about

  1200. Jesus

  1201. and this

  1202. is how he

  1203. finishes his

  1204. poem as he

  1205. says to

  1206. those who

  1207. taught him

  1208. you say

  1209. give your

  1210. heart

  1211. this says

  1212. Christ

  1213. is the

  1214. donor

  1215. you say

  1216. yield your

  1217. life

  1218. this says

  1219. he was

  1220. always

  1221. the owner

  1222. you say

  1223. get on

  1224. fire

  1225. he says

  1226. this says

  1227. you are

  1228. the light

  1229. you say

  1230. keep running

  1231. to God

  1232. this says

  1233. walk

  1234. in Christ

  1235. you say

  1236. dare to

  1237. be a

  1238. missional

  1239. intentional

  1240. incarnational

  1241. contextualized

  1242. no compromise

  1243. countercultural
