  1. Well, good morning, everyone. It's so lovely to see you here today. Big welcome if this is your first time with us.

  2. Great to meet some new folks this morning. Know that you are genuinely so loved and welcome here today.

  3. And if there's anything that we can do to help you or serve you during your time with us today, it would always be our joy to help you with that.

  4. So let me invite you to come expectantly to God's Word this morning.

  5. Why don't you grab your Bible if you came with one? If you didn't, you can grab the Pew Bible, which is, I hope, on the pew in front of you.

  6. It's roughly about page 1200 is where you're going. Or you can scroll on your phone if you so desire to the book of Titus.

  7. And this is such a brilliant passage. I have loved getting into it this week. And it is so much to teach us, I think.

  8. Let's just read this together as we hear God speak to us through his Word.

  9. You, however, and this is Paul writing to Titus, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.

  10. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.

  11. Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.

  12. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind and to be subject to their husbands so that no one will malign the Word of God.

  13. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.

  14. In everything, set them an example by doing what is good.

  15. In your teaching, show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned,

  16. so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

  17. Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them and not to steal from them,

  18. but to show that they can be fully trusted so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Saviour attractive.

  19. For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.

  20. It teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age

  21. while we wait for the grace of God our great God our great God our great God our great God our great God our great God our great God our great God our great God our great Savior Jesus Christ

  22. who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

  23. these then are the things you should teach encourage and

  24. rebuke with all authority do not let anyone despise you and so father we pray

  25. this morning that you would enthuse us as we turn to your words may the

  26. challenge may the comfort from this text lord may it hit us square between the

  27. eyes and may it settle squarely in our hearts

  28. father be by your spirit we ask in jesus is worthy

  29. and in his beautiful name we pray amen

  30. okay so put your hand up if you put either cream on your face or gel on your

  31. hair this morning

  32. okay i'm not here to act to the vanity police i promise

  33. who let the max factor do the x factor put your hands up i'd say keep them up

  34. come on keep them up so i can see okay a number of us did that this

  35. morning if you did i want to reward your bravery

  36. and i want to say to you you've got a head start on understanding

  37. the wonderful truth at the heart of this passage here is the key verse i think at

  38. verse nine

  39. maybe you took it in as we read it together

  40. paul says so that in every way you will make the teaching about god our savior

  41. attractive now when you consider that the word that the paul uses at the end there attractive maybe some of your translations run with adorn when you consider that's a translation its root is in the greek word

  42. cosmosin which is where we get our english word cosmetics from

  43. why does paul want this for this church in crete

  44. so that people from the outside world would look in and do you know this to be true in your own life people look in and say we don't get why you believe what you believe

  45. we find it if we're honest borderline offensive but we cannot argue with what it seems to do in your life

  46. and they see verse 14 christians in the world who are zealous

  47. for good works

  48. now be clear that we are not saved by our good works

  49. that is a foundation of our faith we are not saved by our good works

  50. but

  51. we have been purposely saved by god

  52. for good works

  53. now we thought last week about this culture in this island of crete and maybe if you weren't here last week this is a great chance for you to tap into this

  54. we saw paul quote from one of crete's leading thinkers this man called epimenides if you see him at verse 12 there of chapter 1

  55. this is what he says about the people who live on this island of crete he says

  56. cretins are always liars evil beasts lazy gluttons now we thought about the fact that that is a slogan unlikely to make it onto the front page of your visit crete holiday brochure

  57. but just to show you that this is not just one man's opinion of these people on crete

  58. here's greek historian

  59. paul obias i think you pronounce his name as who wrote this he said

  60. it's impossible to find conduct more treacherous or public policy more unjust

  61. than

  62. in crete

  63. and onto this island then that's known for its wild living

  64. god through the proclamation of the gospel as it's gone forth

  65. the message has birthed this church

  66. and paul has called them if you remember last week to live lives that are counter-cultural to the people who are on this island who they rub shoulders with

  67. every day if by nature cretins are liars evil and lazy

  68. how different then are the jesus people on crete

  69. going to look

  70. as god's grace truth and his truth trains them to live lives that are marked by truth

  71. self-control

  72. self-control

  73. and good works

  74. and so as you consider your life this

  75. is the question that this week and next week are going to invite us all to think about and consider

  76. is what are the good works that god has put in your path for you to do wherever you find yourself right now

  77. next week we're going to think about how those good works are going to look out there

  78. but this week we're going to think about the place where those good works are developed in us

  79. which is

  80. in here

  81. there's two points in this today here's the first one

  82. the church is called to make the gospel beautiful

  83. now if you want a strap line here it is

  84. the local church is the godliness gym

  85. the local church is the godliness gym

  86. now here's what i want you to do

  87. and we're all in this together as high school musical so beautifully sang

  88. why don't you turn around and take in look at the people who are around about you

  89. just do it for a minute we're all in this together

  90. so it's not weird just look at the people around about you

  91. the people that you look at

  92. have you ever thought about this

  93. are god's gracious gift to you

  94. when was the last time you thought about that

  95. you might think i've got nothing in common with that person around about you

  96. you might be right

  97. but in actual fact if you're a christian here today

  98. then you've got the biggest and the most important thing in your life in common

  99. with these people

  100. and the beauty of it

  101. is that god has purposefully and perfectly given us

  102. each other

  103. that you're not here by an accident

  104. you are here for a purpose

  105. and you're surrounded by people who that for whom that is exactly the same

  106. these are the exact people that god knows in his wisdom

  107. that you and i need right now

  108. if we are to grow in godliness

  109. you see titus chapter 2 contains a wonderful picture

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  110. and did you pick it up as we went through it

  111. of an intergenerational church

  112. now it's likely that an older person in this context

  113. and i think in paul's mind is somebody who's above 40

  114. right and i happen just to be the other side of that which is lovely

  115. now you might be laughing at that

  116. but i think in the context that's true

  117. so for the purposes of this older younger thing

  118. we're going to run with the track of that

  119. okay

  120. but let me pitch you a vision

  121. of the kind of church culture

  122. that we're looking to cultivate here

  123. that the grain of the new testament invites us to see and go with

  124. and this is why i think this is a wonderful word in season for us

  125. at the start of a new year and it's a wonderful opportunity

  126. as we demonstrate the power of what god has done

  127. to our world right now in this cultural moment

  128. you ready for this

  129. come on

  130. right

  131. what's playing out in our world right now

  132. and i just took that from a newspaper

  133. i quite liked it as i saw it a few weeks ago

  134. what seems to be playing out in our world right now

  135. is the opposite

  136. of what you have in titus 2

  137. isn't it generally true that in our world right now

  138. where the generation gaps seem ever to be increasing

  139. that you have a younger generation

  140. who are critical of an older generation

  141. you guys are clogging the house and market

  142. you aren't being authentic

  143. and you also have an older generation

  144. who are suspicious of our younger generation

  145. you're not committed as we once were

  146. you've got an entitlement mentality

  147. what you have right now is generations in our world

  148. who are not speaking to each other

  149. they seem to be speaking over each other

  150. does that sound fair?

  151. that sounds roughly familiar?

  152. God calls his people to do this generations thing

  153. radically differently

  154. and to lovingly enter

  155. each other's worlds

  156. now think about the other generation

  157. if we're taking 40

  158. go with it

  159. think about the other generation

  160. to the one that you're in right now

  161. here's some questions for you

  162. as you think about them

  163. do you know

  164. their biggest struggles and their fears?

  165. do you know the things that have influenced them

  166. over the years?

  167. do you see the unique opportunities

  168. that they have right in front of him

  169. them

  170. and so here's a loving challenge

  171. to both generations

  172. older generation

  173. do you pray for

  174. and are you willing to invest yourselves

  175. in

  176. a younger generation

  177. who by the way

  178. are the church leaders of tomorrow

  179. in a way that communicates to them

  180. that we don't just want you

  181. to simply keep up the momentum

  182. of what we've started

  183. no we long

  184. that you guys accomplish

  185. and see so much more fruit

  186. than we ever did in our life

  187. as this generation of God's people

  188. do you appreciate

  189. that they are facing things

  190. that you probably never had to face

  191. and never had to worry about

  192. in your lifetime

  193. mounting student debt

  194. gender critical

  195. and sex saturated places of work

  196. online school learning

  197. social media

  198. mental health worries

  199. do you

  200. are you willing to

  201. enter their world

  202. and be their biggest cheerleaders

  203. in godliness

  204. and younger generation

  205. are you sitting here

  206. right now

  207. deep down

  208. thinking to yourself

  209. that you have nothing to learn

  210. from an older generation

  211. do you see

  212. that they have so

  213. much Christian life experience

  214. to share with you

  215. people who are in this room

  216. who have had marriages

  217. that have lasted

  218. for longer

  219. than I've been alive

  220. people who know

  221. what it is

  222. to live through

  223. and suffer bereavement

  224. people who know

  225. how scary it is

  226. to face unemployment

  227. and redundancy

  228. people who know

  229. what it is

  230. to be tired

  231. and exhausted

  232. and at the end of your tether

  233. as a parent

  234. people who know

  235. what it is

  236. to run a business

  237. and to do that

  238. with integrity

  239. people who know

  240. what it is

  241. to be a missionary

  242. in a foreign country

  243. and experience that

  244. when you consider

  245. all of what I've just said

  246. do you see

  247. how the local church

  248. is a truly

  249. marvellous gift

  250. from God

  251. that he would put

  252. each other

  253. all of us

  254. in the same

  255. church family

  256. and here's the challenge

  257. what we're called to do

  258. is that we are called

  259. to help each other

  260. figure out

  261. what faithfulness

  262. to Jesus

  263. looks like

  264. in our different

  265. life stages

  266. and so into our world

  267. that encourages

  268. a culture

  269. of dishonor

  270. are you up

  271. for being

  272. a church

  273. community

  274. who fosters

  275. and creates

  276. that culture

  277. of honor

  278. amongst the different

  279. generations

  280. generations

  281. in here

  282. two things

  283. that Paul

  284. tells Titus

  285. to foster

  286. in this church

  287. family

  288. in Crete

  289. two little

  290. sub points

  291. here

  292. here's the first

  293. one

  294. it's a culture

  295. of modelling

  296. do you see

  297. the different

  298. generations

  299. playing out here

  300. there's four

  301. of them

  302. in Paul's

  303. mind

  304. do you see

  305. he's calling

  306. older men

  307. verse 2

  308. to be examples

  309. of a dignified

  310. life

  311. particularly

  312. so that the

  313. younger men

  314. can look at

  315. them and think

  316. that you are

  317. what I want

  318. to be

  319. when I

  320. grew up

  321. how many

  322. of us

  323. did that

  324. when we

  325. were growing

  326. up by the

  327. way

  328. was it just

  329. me

  330. who had

  331. posters on

  332. my bedroom

  333. wall of the

  334. person I

  335. wanted to be

  336. when I

  337. grew up

  338. I think it

  339. was Ryan

  340. gigs at the

  341. time if that

  342. mean he

  343. means anything

  344. to any of

  345. you

  346. probably not

  347. in the later

  348. years of his

  349. life

  350. but older

  351. men we need

  352. you in this

  353. church

  354. know how much

  355. we love having

  356. you as part of

  357. this church

  358. family

  359. hear the

  360. encouragement

  361. to live that

  362. sober minded

  363. self-controlled

  364. sacrificial life

  365. in front of the

  366. rest of us

  367. because we need

  368. you to be

  369. setting the

  370. pace here

  371. we need you

  372. by the rings

  373. that are on

  374. the tree of

  375. your life

  376. to show us

  377. that Christianity

  378. still makes

  379. sense in your

  380. 70s

  381. can I encourage

  382. you not

  383. you might be

  384. physically taking

  385. your foot off

  386. the gas a

  387. little bit

  388. understandably

  389. so

  390. but inwardly

  391. spiritually

  392. can I encourage

  393. you to live a

  394. life in front

  395. of the rest

  396. of us

  397. that shows

  398. us that

  399. you're putting

  400. the gas

  401. well and

  402. truly on

  403. when it

  404. comes to

  405. your love

  406. for and

  407. walk with

  408. Jesus

  409. older women

  410. verse 3

  411. do you see

  412. that be

  413. examples of

  414. how to use

  415. your words

  416. of how to

  417. conduct

  418. yourself

  419. socially

  420. of how to

  421. be with

  422. your family

  423. which by the

  424. way is the

  425. thing that

  426. makes them

  427. perfectly suited

  428. to be the

  429. ones who

  430. do you see

  431. it who

  432. teach and

  433. train the

  434. younger

  435. woman

  436. now that's

  437. not saying

  438. that men

  439. can't meet

  440. with women

  441. or anything

  442. like that

  443. understand that

  444. I take it

  445. that there are

  446. so many good

  447. and appropriate

  448. ways where we

  449. can and where

  450. we should

  451. foster those

  452. kind of

  453. relationships

  454. between the

  455. sexes

  456. but wisdom

  457. would say

  458. wouldn't it

  459. that the

  460. people who

  461. are best

  462. placed to

  463. nurture a

  464. younger

  465. generation

  466. of females

  467. are the

  468. older women

  469. who are in

  470. this church

  471. family

  472. because they

  473. just know

  474. what it

  475. is

  476. they get

  477. it

  478. in a way

  479. that I

  480. certainly

  481. know that

  482. I just

  483. don't

  484. and you're

  485. to pass

  486. that on

  487. as you

  488. teach the

  489. younger

  490. woman

  491. just worth

  492. flagging there

  493. in case you

  494. picked up in

  495. the reading

  496. that working

  497. at home

  498. just doesn't

  499. mean that you

  500. can't have a

  501. job

  502. got to remember

  503. then this Roman

  504. culture family

  505. life work

  506. life they all

  507. happen in

  508. the household

  509. so it's not

  510. quite a straight

  511. line there that

  512. you can draw

  513. but and yet

  514. hear me say

  515. and I know

  516. this will

  517. click with so

  518. many in this

  519. church that

  520. in a culture

  521. that subtly

  522. undermines

  523. family and

  524. marriage and

  525. spotlights

  526. independence and

  527. career advancement

  528. that if you

  529. find yourself in a

  530. season of life

  531. that is calling

  532. you to be at

  533. home that if

  534. children and if

  535. your marriage is

  536. just what you do

  537. with your days

  538. you might be

  539. thinking I'm

  540. kind of missing

  541. out I've had to

  542. park things

  543. can I just

  544. encourage you

  545. that what you

  546. are doing

  547. is a glorious

  548. thing in the

  549. sight of the

  550. Lord please

  551. please know

  552. that please

  553. know that

  554. and younger

  555. men do you

  556. just see how

  557. they are told

  558. to be self

  559. controlled and

  560. just in case you

  561. think you're

  562. getting off really

  563. lightly because

  564. there's one thing

  565. there this is the

  566. equivalent of the

  567. personal trainer

  568. pointing you in

  569. the direction of

  570. the gym and

  571. saying go and

  572. get fit you

  573. don't hear that

  574. you wouldn't hear

  575. that and think

  576. I'm just he's

  577. just talking about

  578. my upper left

  579. tricep he's

  580. talking about

  581. no go and

  582. get fit that

  583. means all of

  584. your life all

  585. of you how you

  586. spend your money

  587. what you look at

  588. online the jokes

  589. that you make

  590. that's what he

  591. means by self

  592. control I'll be

  593. clear this isn't

  594. Paul pushing some

  595. kind of first

  596. century stoicism

  597. saying leave

  598. emotions at the

  599. side the Bible

  600. is full of

  601. emotions self

  602. control is when

  603. we let the Bible

  604. inform us as to

  605. what the right

  606. expression of

  607. those human

  608. emotions looks

  609. like Titus

  610. create a culture

  611. in the church

  612. of modelling

  613. and the other

  614. side of the coin

  615. really create a

  616. culture of

  617. witnessing so

  618. verse 9 Paul

  619. addresses bond

  620. servants and

  621. again this is

  622. not slavery as

  623. our minds

  624. automatically jump

  625. to picturing it

  626. in our day in

  627. this day you have

  628. roughly 30% or

  629. so of the Roman

  630. Empire who are

  631. slaves right

  632. doctors were

  633. slaves lawyers

  634. were slaves this

  635. is much more you

  636. do those things as

  637. you work for the

  638. family that both

  639. employ you and

  640. that you stay

  641. with slaves

  642. perhaps reading

  643. this thinking I'd

  644. love to make a

  645. difference for Jesus

  646. where I am but

  647. I've got all these

  648. work constraints on

  649. my life meaning I

  650. have to be in a

  651. certain place at a

  652. certain time doing

  653. certain tasks what

  654. can I do with my

  655. life for the

  656. witness of Jesus

  657. and Paul is

  658. saying don't

  659. underestimate the

  660. impact that just

  661. doing your job well

  662. and with integrity

  663. the impact that God

  664. may have through that

  665. increase and I hope

  666. that's a word for some

  667. of us today if we're

  668. struggling with our

  669. jobs thinking does

  670. anyone see does

  671. anyone see this is it

  672. making any difference

  673. please do not

  674. underestimate what

  675. God can do with the

  676. your faithful witness

  677. and love for Jesus

  678. wherever you are

  679. and in doing so do

  680. you see how you

  681. will adorn the

  682. gospel of God our

  683. savior what's the

  684. motivation for all of

  685. this well the church

  686. is called to make the

  687. gospel beautiful

  688. because the gospel

  689. has made the church

  690. beautiful that's what

  691. the little word for

  692. do you see that verse

  693. 11 indicates it's just

  694. the linking words

  695. what's the logic of

  696. what's gone before it

  697. the word for just

  698. links it to the

  699. section after in other

  700. words saying it's the

  701. gospel that's created

  702. this kind of community

  703. the message behind it

  704. all is the match that

  705. lights the fire of the

  706. practice of it all

  707. do you see how it's a

  708. message with a source

  709. verse 11 that source is

  710. not our efforts that

  711. source is not our

  712. feelings no the source

  713. is the unmerited

  714. grace of God and that

  715. grace is not just a

  716. message to be

  717. proclaimed it's a

  718. message that you see

  719. the word it it trains

  720. us trains us you know

  721. my biggest fear every

  722. time I go to put gas in

  723. my car at a petrol

  724. station my biggest fear

  725. is I put in the wrong

  726. kind of fuel anyone else

  727. have that weird thing

  728. when you go to a petrol

  729. station because I just

  730. don't want to be that

  731. guy who has to call the

  732. AA and says I'm sorry I

  733. put petrol in my diesel

  734. car can you come out and

  735. drain the thing I love

  736. that our car has got a

  737. big diesel sign at the

  738. the where you put the gas

  739. in it gets me every

  740. single time so I don't

  741. know where I'd be without

  742. it okay but I've if I

  743. were to put petrol in our

  744. diesel car the thing

  745. would just stutter and

  746. stall Paul is saying

  747. here that the Christian

  748. life we're designed to

  749. run on grace that's what

  750. we put into our lives we

  751. put in this message of

  752. grace and what we so

  753. often default to doing is

  754. that we put into the

  755. tanks of our lives our

  756. efforts our morals you put

  757. that in you put that in

  758. solely into your life that

  759. will not go far if we want

  760. to see growth in godliness

  761. we need to fill our tank

  762. with the truth of god's

  763. grace the truth of the

  764. that's why we do this

  765. every Sunday we gather

  766. together we have scripture

  767. readings we have songs that

  768. are appropriate all these

  769. things are going on are

  770. designed to fill our minds

  771. with the gospel this message

  772. of who Jesus is and what

  773. he's done for us because

  774. our minds during the week

  775. they just drift and you see

  776. by god's grace we find

  777. ourselves between two

  778. appearings in the text the

  779. first is when first

  780. appearing was when Jesus

  781. came at Christmas well we

  782. celebrate it at Christmas

  783. and his second appearing

  784. will be when he returns

  785. you see those two

  786. appearings and that means

  787. that the gospel gives us a

  788. hope and a future and that

  789. means that we are people who

  790. are waiting for Jesus's

  791. return now again if you think

  792. about Crete if Crete is full

  793. of people who are living

  794. for the moment if Crete is

  795. full of people who are

  796. saying life is too short if

  797. Crete is full of people who

  798. would happily subscribe to

  799. Carpe Diem how different

  800. are lives of people who are

  801. waiting and living not for

  802. today but who are living and

  803. waiting in light of the hope

  804. of tomorrow going to look on

  805. Crete

  806. big question I asked myself

  807. this week and would my

  808. friends would my family with

  809. those walking who I walk and

  810. talk with every day would

  811. they know that I'm a person

  812. who's waiting for Jesus's

  813. return would they see it in

  814. me you know C.S. Lewis I've

  815. quoted this guy a few times

  816. before he said this if you read

  817. history you'll find that the

  818. Christians who did most for the

  819. present world were precisely

  820. those who thought most of the

  821. next and I just caveat that

  822. and just say as long as what

  823. we mean by next is Jesus we

  824. think most about not just

  825. heaven but Jesus

  826. can I just say it's maybe

  827. something that's been in my

  828. mind this week with everything

  829. that's going on in our world

  830. maybe particularly in in our

  831. countries we think about stuff

  832. that's coming up in government

  833. and things like that let's

  834. remind ourselves what we read

  835. we sang at the start that he is

  836. in that place of all authority

  837. and power right now the risen

  838. Jesus we live between these

  839. two appearings but don't ever

  840. doubt the fact that he is in

  841. control every square inch of

  842. our existence he is in control

  843. of the difference is just now

  844. we're living by faith in that

  845. truth but then we'll see it by

  846. sight in his second appearing but

  847. never doubt that he's in control

  848. never doubt that he's not sovereign

  849. over square every square inch of

  850. our existence the gospel gives us a

  851. purpose as well do you see that

  852. now you're living in your woman

  853. world you're used to reading that

  854. the gods came down to get stuff from

  855. us and we thought last week about

  856. Zeus apparently he was born on Crete

  857. the classic example of might and

  858. right the gods come down they demand

  859. our worship they demand our

  860. allegiance and if we obey we get

  861. good things in return from them but

  862. you see how Paul says Jesus is the

  863. complete opposite of that

  864. Jesus gave himself for us to redeem

  865. us you can remind yourself of that

  866. every time you go to buy something

  867. at Tesco when you pick up an item

  868. you go to the tell you pay the price

  869. and now it's yours

  870. Jesus paid the price for our freedom

  871. not in pounds but with his precious

  872. blood on the cross he was humiliated so

  873. that we could be his he was pierced so

  874. that we could be purchased that's what

  875. the word redeemed means he bought us

  876. back for himself and he didn't just

  877. do it for individual people just

  878. although that is true it is our

  879. people do you see that in the text

  880. it's our people collectively why do we

  881. say no to ungodliness because Jesus

  882. has redeemed us from ungodliness he's

  883. called us out of our old way of life

  884. and said I set you free to live for me

  885. that was a whole reason that you were

  886. created in the first place to know God

  887. and walk with him and why do we say

  888. yes to godliness because Jesus has

  889. purified us he's bought us for himself

  890. and we belong to him and so as we do

  891. this together do you see how we become

  892. proof cases we become exhibit a to the

  893. world that the gospel it works

  894. now just as we close can I tell you about

  895. my friend Doug

  896. Doug was an elder at the church I used

  897. to go to up in Aberdeen when I was a

  898. student there

  899. Doug was about 20 years older than me

  900. Doug was an oil and gas lawyer and as

  901. someone who was studying law at the time

  902. I remember really looking up to him

  903. Doug and his wife Ray and their kids

  904. they used to have me around to their

  905. house for lunch I used to send Doug my

  906. CV and job applications he used to look

  907. over and give me some really sobering

  908. words about what I'd written Doug used

  909. to tell me what corporate culture was

  910. like before I entered it but the biggest

  911. thing that Doug did for me was with a 20

  912. year gap between us I could see him

  913. loving his wife I could see him caring

  914. for his children I could see him loving

  915. and serving in his local church because

  916. he loved Jesus now I moved away from

  917. Aberdeen I moved down here and he

  918. subsequently and his family moved away as

  919. well first he worked in America in law

  920. then he went to Hong Kong and I think he

  921. did a bit in legal banking as well

  922. before he retired from law and a few

  923. years ago he moved back to Edinburgh I

  924. did not know this at all and he's just

  925. taken up the role of executive pastor at

  926. Crubber's Christian Fellowship on the

  927. Royal Mile now with that skill set talk

  928. about the right man at the right time

  929. doing the right job as those guys embark

  930. on a really exciting building project that

  931. they're doing there brilliant guy but I

  932. went to to preach recently at Crubber's

  933. and there he was with his wife Ray and all

  934. I could say was just thank you thank you for

  935. convincing me as a 20 year old young guy who

  936. thought he had life sorted and actually

  937. didn't have a clue what life is all about

  938. thank you for convincing me by the way that

  939. you lived your life in front of me that

  940. Jesus was going to be worth following for the

  941. next 20 years of my life

  942. thank you for doing that

  943. wouldn't it be a wonderful thing

  944. if this church community were filled with

  945. more of those kind of relationships

  946. let me just give you a one and a two as

  947. really quick fire applications just as we

  948. finish to do off the back of this here's

  949. number one try and speak to one person today

  950. who's in the other generation from you

  951. right you can use this sermon as an excuse

  952. to do it try and speak to one person today

  953. who's the other generation to you and I also

  954. want you to do is to look in two directions

  955. as we think about modeling friends the

  956. challenge here is to get on the catwalk

  957. who is older than you that you can learn

  958. from who is in this church family who is

  959. perfectly placed to be the person who comes

  960. alongside you and says let's do life

  961. together who's older than you who's younger

  962. than you who can you get alongside with the

  963. sole purpose of wanting to pass on the

  964. things that you have learned in life truth

  965. leading to godliness and together let's just

  966. be this church community who's helping each

  967. other in that privilege of adorning the

  968. gospel listen at the end of the sermon I'm

  969. going to be at the end of the service I'll

  970. be at the back and if you're interested in

  971. this if you would love to be paired with

  972. somebody I love doing that matchmaking

  973. thing if you'd love to do that just give

  974. us your name your details and I'll make

  975. that happen with somebody in this church

  976. grab Kate as well Kate I would love to do

  977. Archie anyone you've seen up the front we

  978. would love to foster those kind of intergeneral

  979. relationships in our church community

  980. let's be those who make the teaching of God

  981. our saviour attractive let's pray will we

  982. and so this is the words of psalm 145

  983. great is the Lord and most worthy of praise his

  984. greatness no one can fathom one generation

  985. commends your works to another they tell of

  986. your mighty acts they speak of the glorious

  987. splendor of your majesty and I will meditate on

  988. your wonderful works so far I just pray that you

  989. would thrill each of our hearts here today with

  990. Jesus with a wonderful vision of who he is today

  991. and his self-giving love for us his redeeming work

  992. for us Lord may it cultivate in us that desire to be

  993. this community who together are zealous for good

  994. works Father would you be prompting our hearts

  995. Lord where we need to change would you be

  996. installing in us that that rock solid confidence in who you are today

  997. Father would you put people on our minds and in our hearts by your spirit who we can draw alongside

  998. we just finished by saying thank you for each other

  999. thank you Father for this church family here today

1000. and Lord I pray that you would help us as we seek to be those who live godly lives for your glory

1001. in Jesus name we pray Amen
