  1. Good morning. There's so much in these verses that we are considering that what I say this morning is only going to touch, is only going to scratch the surface.

  2. These last few weeks have been sad for us as we have lost a friend to a battle with cancer.

  3. We knew what was coming and it pained us to hear of the details of that fight.

  4. The daily updates that we would get as the situation was worsening and as we prayed for a different outcome, it was hard to hear.

  5. At the funeral, some of our children gave short accounts of the memories that they had with their mother growing up.

  6. And more recently in the days as they watched life slip away, the peace that she had in her life and the challenge that that was to them.

  7. They said that in that situation that it has drawn them closer to the Lord and it has made them stronger in their faith.

  8. There's one or two friends here that were at that funeral today.

  9. And they would have heard this, that our friend had a peace that passes normal human understanding.

  10. She had a peace because it was given to her by God.

  11. It was a direct consequence of her relationship with God.

  12. That God is in complete control and that the hope that she had, that when she left this earth, she would go to be with him forever.

  13. However, this is real life.

  14. Where we have great sorrow and pain.

  15. And yet as Christians, we often talk about peace and comfort and joy.

  16. The joy that it is to know that the one that we love, who we have lost, has gone to be with Jesus forever.

  17. You see, in our passage today, we're in the middle of a historical episode that sometimes we just gloss over without letting the reality of the situation hit us.

  18. We say things like, Friday's here, but Sunday's coming.

  19. And even though that is true, it somehow allows us just to skip over the part of suffering and horror of what happened to Jesus.

  20. We've named it Good Friday.

  21. And like Christmas, I think that we often see Easter through a rose-tinted view.

  22. There's birds in the air.

  23. There's lambs in the field.

  24. There's fluffy yellow chicks.

  25. Maybe you're thinking of Easter bunnies and chocolate eggs.

  26. Or flowers growing in the garden.

  27. And Rachel and I have been watching out the back window as the squirrels have been building a nest.

  28. And the birds and the snowdrops and the crocus and the daffodils.

  29. And all of these things have been coming to life.

  30. We've been watching these birds making a nest, waiting to welcome new life into this world.

  31. And Rachel and I, as others in this audience are, well, for us at Easter time, God willing, we will welcome new life into this world.

  32. The nights are lighter.

  33. And we've anchored Easter at a time where there is just a little bit of joy.

  34. The Easter story is a story of joy for many of us.

  35. Because it's a story that leads to life.

  36. Our series is called Life in His Name.

  37. Life in Jesus' Name.

  38. Jesus said that I am come that you might have life and that you might have it abundantly.

  39. But Easter is also a story of difficulty.

  40. A lot of pain.

  41. A lot of anguish.

  42. A lot of things that we maybe don't fully understand.

  43. The account of what happened to the Lord leading up to His death.

  44. On one hand, brings us joy.

  45. But on the other hand, it might make us just feel a little bit of sorrow.

  46. The eternal Son of God was offered up for you and for I.

  47. That eternal Son of God was mistreated by those whom He had created.

  48. That eternal Son of God was rejected by the nation that He had chosen.

  49. There's a verse in Psalm 30, verse 5.

    Psalms 30:5

  50. It says this, that weeping endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning.

  51. And it's easy for us to say that after an event.

  52. It's easy for us to say that after, you know, in hindsight, it's easy for us to say that when the raw pain has subdued after death.

  53. Now for a few minutes this morning, I want us to dial in on these hours that we have read about in John chapter 18.

    John 18 chapter mention

  54. I have a simple ABCD this morning that I want to look at.

  55. Hopefully it's a simple structure that will help you remember what we have thought about this morning.

  56. Let's start with this A and B.

  57. The arrest and betrayal.

  58. I've deliberately missed out C there because I don't know whether to put in there capture or challenge that this is to us.

  59. Or control or a list of other C's that came to mind as I put this up.

  60. But then we have the denial at the end there.

  61. So we'll fill in that blank as we get through our message.

  62. This sequence is a dramatic story that we've read about in the progression of the Lord entering into Jerusalem.

  63. And up until that point of dying on the cross.

  64. Our scene here in chapter 18 is set during the night before that awful day.

  65. And even though on that following day there will be a period of darkness, the scene that we have is a very dark scene.

  66. This is the night of the Passover.

  67. Earlier in the evening, Jesus and his disciples, like the thousands of Jews who were crammed into Jerusalem at that time,

  68. were eating the Passover meal together.

  69. They would have recited stories passed down from generation to generation.

  70. They would have talked about the lamb, the Passover lamb, from the time of their forefathers escaping from Egypt.

  71. They would have prepared the bitter herbs and the unleavened bread.

  72. And as they ate that together, they would have talked about this lamb that was taken and sacrificed and eaten.

  73. And they would have reminded themselves of the significance of the meal and how the blood of the lamb was preserved and delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

  74. And how the lamb would have been food for their journey.

  75. And yet they were totally unaware that in 12 hours time, the man that they had been following for the last three hours would be slain like a lamb.

  76. And be sacrificed for their deliverance and for to bring about peace with God.

  77. In our chapter here in verse 1, we read that the Lord Jesus goes out with his disciples to a place that they often went to.

  78. He crosses over the valley and up the side of the hill to the olive garden, a place that we know as Gethsemane.

  79. It's a place that the Lord Jesus often went with his disciples.

  80. We go there to spend time with them for rest.

  81. They would pray there.

  82. They would meditate.

  83. They would commune together.

  84. It's not the first time that God has communed with people in a garden.

  85. It's very similar to a story that God communed with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

  86. And in that garden, it's in similar fashion.

  87. Adam and Eve betray God.

  88. Just as Judas is about to betray God.

  89. Unlike the scene in the Garden of Eden where Satan comes in subtly, in this scene that we have, a band of soldiers and the temple guards, they came in loudly.

  90. As I've been looking through and studying for this passage, the scholars would say that there's maybe up to 600 people, 600 soldiers would have been involved there.

  91. That's what a cohort of the soldiers would have looked like.

  92. Plus the temple guards and the police and some of the Sanhedrin and the mob that would have come to collect him.

  93. A big, angry band of soldiers came that night to take the Lord Jesus.

  94. Not subtly, but by force and aggression.

  95. You know, Jesus was in that familiar place with his disciples.

  96. And if we had read in Matthew or Mark, we might have seen a little bit more details than what we see in John's Gospel.

  97. But in that familiar place, Judas betrays the Lord Jesus.

  98. And I wonder that if in our familiar places we betray the Lord Jesus.

  99. Maybe not in the same way that Judas betrayed him.

  100. But I wonder if we betray him in another way.

  101. A man who had personally spent three years with the Lord Jesus, witnessing incredible miracles.

  102. Often in that place in Gethsemane with the rest of the disciples, praying and spending time with the Lord Jesus.

  103. And yet it just shows how very little he knows about the Lord Jesus as we see unfolding in John chapter 18.

    John 18 chapter mention

  104. I wonder if that's the same as us today.

  105. I wonder if, even though we might have been on the Christian pathway for quite some time,

  106. just how much do we know about the Lord Jesus?

  107. I think as we read through John 18,

  108. maybe it just shines, or it just puts a mirror in front of us,

  109. just to look into there and ask ourselves the questions,

  110. do we see ourselves in this passage?

  111. You know, I suggest that Judas was worried that Jesus would somehow escape.

  112. As he hatched that plan with the temple guard,

  113. the temple priests and the guards,

  114. that he would come and give that secret signal of a kiss

  115. in order, I don't know what he thought,

  116. not to give the game away.

  117. They came in force.

  118. And as I mentioned earlier,

  119. the people that have researched this

  120. would give the indication that it was a big band of soldiers

  121. that came to take the Lord Jesus

  122. with torches and lanterns

  123. as they came to light up that hillside

  124. as they hunted for him.

  125. But he did not realise that Jesus

  126. was the Lamb of God

  127. who would meekly submit.

  128. There was no need for battle.

  129. Jesus shocked Judas and the arresting officers

  130. by boldly presenting himself.

  131. He had nothing,

  132. the Lord Jesus had nothing to fear

  133. and nothing to hide.

  134. He would willingly lay down his life

  135. for the sheep.

  136. And furthermore,

  137. by surrendering to the officers,

  138. Jesus helped to protect his own disciples.

  139. It's what we read here.

  140. He kept them safe,

  141. not only spiritually,

  142. but physically,

  143. that none of them would be hard,

  144. that the scriptures would be fulfilled,

  145. that none of them would be harmed,

  146. none of them would be lost.

  147. You might ask yourself the question,

  148. why did the soldiers fall back

  149. when they came to ask the Lord Jesus,

  150. when the Lord Jesus asked them,

  151. who have you come to seek?

  152. And he answered,

  153. I am he.

  154. You might wonder why they fell back.

  155. This is a title,

  156. we've thought about different I am's

  157. in Brunsfield before.

  158. This is a title,

  159. I am.

  160. It's one that the Jews would recognise

  161. as a statement

  162. that would mean that he is the son of God,

  163. that he is God.

  164. But I think in the Lord Jesus

  165. has been bold

  166. in the way that he declared

  167. that I am he.

  168. It would strike them

  169. that he was in total control.

  170. You know,

  171. this wasn't a physically

  172. charred situation.

  173. We don't really know

  174. what Judas said

  175. to the priests

  176. and the Sanhedrin

  177. as they hatched this plan

  178. to come and to capture

  179. the Lord Jesus.

  180. What he said

  181. that would prepare them

  182. for this confrontation.

  183. We remember that the Jewish leaders

  184. before would have tried

  185. to capture the Lord Jesus.

  186. They tried to take hold of him.

  187. They tried to arrest him.

  188. And always without success.

  189. And I wonder

  190. as this band of people came,

  191. whether they came for conflict.

  192. And yet they were met

  193. with surrender

  194. and calm

  195. and peace.

  196. And I think they were confused.

  197. Lord Jesus asked them again,

  198. who is it that you want?

  199. And that kiss that Judas gave,

  200. which was repeatedly given to the Lord,

  201. was one of these acts of,

  202. was probably one of the worst acts

  203. of betrayal

  204. that we've ever seen

  205. in history.

  206. Now I'm going to move on

  207. to denial

  208. before we come back

  209. to what our C is.

  210. But Peter also

  211. betrays the Lord Jesus

  212. in John 18.

  213. I think

  214. if we betray the Lord Jesus,

  215. it's probably more like

  216. how Peter betrayed

  217. the Lord Jesus.

  218. I think if we betray

  219. the Lord Jesus,

  220. it's in our words

  221. and in our actions.

  222. The man who came to suffer

  223. for his disciples

  224. is the man who came to suffer

  225. for you and for me.

  226. To give up his life,

  227. to be judged

  228. for our wickedness,

  229. and yet,

  230. like Peter,

  231. we can often

  232. deny the Lord Jesus

  233. when we're asked.

  234. Graham has mentioned this

  235. over the last few weeks.

  236. On Monday morning,

  237. when you get into the office

  238. or the staff room

  239. or university

  240. and you're asked

  241. what did you get up to

  242. at the weekend,

  243. what is your answer?

  244. This servant girl,

  245. she asked Peter,

  246. are you not one of

  247. this man's disciples?

  248. And Peter denied it.

  249. So tomorrow,

  250. I wonder what my answer

  251. will be.

  252. Will my answer be

  253. that I have spent time,

  254. we have spent time

  255. with each other,

  256. that we've spent time

  257. in Brunsfield,

  258. that we've spent time

  259. thinking about the Lord Jesus

  260. and reminding ourselves

  261. of the one who loved us

  262. and gave himself for us.

  263. Or I wonder if we'll be

  264. quiet like Peter

  265. and choose not to say anything

  266. and deny that we have

  267. anything to do

  268. with the Lord Jesus.

  269. If you're like me,

  270. then that will be true

  271. of many Monday mornings

  272. when I've been asked

  273. what did I get up to

  274. at the weekend.

  275. And many times,

  276. I've failed

  277. because I stayed silent

  278. and I denied

  279. taking a stand

  280. with the Lord Jesus.

  281. It was easier for me

  282. to align myself

  283. with what the world thinks

  284. should happen

  285. at the weekend

  286. rather than what

  287. I actually did.

  288. Our series is this,

  289. Life in His Name.

  290. And Jesus came

  291. that we might have life,

  292. abundant life,

  293. life in His name,

  294. and yet somehow

  295. we can be embarrassed

  296. by that.

  297. Peter gets a lot of stick

  298. in our,

  299. and sometimes the way

  300. that we describe

  301. this scene

  302. as He's standing

  303. by that fire.

  304. We've got to remember

  305. that this is in the middle

  306. of the night.

  307. It's in a cold part

  308. of the day.

  309. And, you know,

  310. Peter is standing there

  311. to get a heat

  312. and he denies the fact

  313. that he is one

  314. of the Lord's disciples

  315. or that he knows

  316. the Lord Jesus.

  317. Bear in mind

  318. that the people

  319. who lit the fire

  320. are the soldiers.

  321. The same soldiers

  322. that came to Gethsemane

  323. to capture the Lord Jesus

  324. and witness Peter

  325. cutting off the ear

  326. of the high priest's,

  327. the servant's ear.

  328. Peter is standing

  329. right beside them.

  330. I think we give Peter

  331. a lot of stick

  332. because we think,

  333. Peter, you should have

  334. took a stand for the Lord

  335. and you didn't.

  336. And yet in that situation,

  337. Peter is fearful

  338. for his life

  339. and he's fearful

  340. what people think about him

  341. or what people

  342. will do to him.

  343. You know,

  344. Peter was embarrassed by it.

  345. He understood

  346. that his physical life

  347. might be in danger

  348. if he identifies himself

  349. with the Lord Jesus.

  350. If he said,

  351. yes,

  352. I'm one of his followers

  353. and one of his disciples

  354. and one of the people

  355. who believe

  356. that this man

  357. is who he says he is,

  358. the Son of God,

  359. that he is God,

  360. that he is the Lamb of God

  361. who comes to take away

  362. the sin of the world.

  363. You know,

  364. Peter feared

  365. for his life

  366. and he denied

  367. the Lord Jesus.

  368. And next week,

  369. we'll come to see,

  370. I don't see Archie here today,

  371. but Archie is speaking

  372. next week

  373. and next week,

  374. we'll come to see

  375. that Peter not only

  376. denies him once,

  377. but he denies him again

  378. and again.

  379. And I'll leave

  380. that cliffhanger there

  381. because that is

  382. where our passage stops,

  383. right in the middle

  384. of Peter's denial.

  385. This brings me

  386. to my last point.

  387. And it is this,

  388. control.

  389. What was taking place

  390. in this scene

  391. that we've thought about,

  392. even down to this

  393. minor detail

  394. of a cock

  395. crowing

  396. twice

  397. in the middle

  398. of the night,

  399. significant enough

  400. to be heard

  401. and to be counted.

  402. This is because

  403. the Lord is in control

  404. and Peter

  405. knew that.

  406. Not only was

  407. the Lord in control,

  408. but the Lord

  409. knew all things.

  410. He knew what was

  411. going to befall him.

  412. And that is something

  413. that I think

  414. we should cling to today.

  415. Jesus' testimony

  416. throughout his whole life

  417. is that he is in control.

  418. He was in control

  419. then

  420. and he's in control

  421. now.

  422. When we think

  423. about the scene

  424. that is chaotic,

  425. that has drama,

  426. as I've said,

  427. you know,

  428. think about this,

  429. you know,

  430. possibly hundreds

  431. of soldiers

  432. marching through

  433. the streets

  434. of Jerusalem.

  435. Down over that river,

  436. up the other side

  437. of the hill,

  438. into the Garden

  439. of Gethsemane

  440. with torches

  441. and lanterns

  442. and weapons

  443. in the middle

  444. of the night.

  445. It's just such

  446. a commotion.

  447. Probably,

  448. there's a lot of things

  449. that are going on

  450. in Jerusalem

  451. at this time,

  452. but probably

  453. they've gathered people

  454. as they've pushed

  455. through the streets

  456. of Jerusalem,

  457. waking people up

  458. and wondering

  459. what it is.

  460. You know,

  461. if we see any kind

  462. of activity

  463. outside at two o'clock

  464. in the morning,

  465. then we are naturally

  466. curious.

  467. Maybe a mob

  468. has gathered

  469. behind this band

  470. of soldiers

  471. and it just seems

  472. to be

  473. that nobody knows

  474. what's happening

  475. and there's nobody

  476. in control,

  477. but God's in control

  478. and Jesus knows

  479. that this is the time,

  480. this is his time

  481. that has come.

  482. Remember in John 17

  483. he said this,

  484. the hour has come.

  485. You know,

  486. many times in his ministry

  487. people would come

  488. to take the Lord Jesus

  489. and yet he would slip away.

  490. They would come

  491. to kill him

  492. or to seize him

  493. and yet he would not

  494. allow it,

  495. he would pass through

  496. because the appointed time

  497. had not come.

  498. But the time has come,

  499. a time of his choosing,

  500. a time that was chosen

  501. before the creation

  502. of the world.

  503. You see,

  504. the Lord Jesus

  505. is in complete control.

  506. arrest,

  507. betrayal,

  508. denial,

  509. but right in the middle

  510. of all of this chaos

  511. we see that Jesus

  512. is in control.

  513. Now you might think

  514. that A, B, C, D

  515. is fairly elementary.

  516. It's too simple

  517. for you to remember

  518. but we should remember this

  519. if you remember nothing else,

  520. that Jesus

  521. is in control

  522. and we know

  523. and we experience this

  524. in our lives

  525. when we surrender to him.

  526. I don't want to steal the message

  527. for the next few weeks

  528. but this might be

  529. the last message

  530. that you,

  531. this might be the last

  532. Christian message

  533. that you hear.

  534. It might be the last time

  535. that you've got an invitation

  536. to come

  537. and meet this Jesus.

  538. Jesus knew

  539. and he foretold

  540. what would come.

  541. The Lord Jesus said to Peter,

  542. you will deny me three times

  543. before the cock rose twice.

  544. He said that because he knew

  545. that it would happen.

  546. He knew that he would

  547. go to the cross,

  548. he knew that he would

  549. give up his life

  550. he knew that men

  551. would rip the beard

  552. from his face

  553. or tear strips of flesh

  554. out his back

  555. with that scourge.

  556. He knew all of these things

  557. and yet he faces them

  558. with peace.

  559. He surrenders himself

  560. to those that come

  561. to take him captive.

  562. In fact,

  563. even though men

  564. came to take him captive,

  565. we remember these words

  566. that he said,

  567. no one takes my life,

  568. I give it.

  569. He willingly

  570. becomes the Lamb of God

  571. which takes away

  572. the sin of the world.

  573. I hope next week

  574. that you do hear

  575. what the message is

  576. because you'll hear

  577. that there is a time

  578. in the scene

  579. where Peter

  580. has an opportunity

  581. to repent.

  582. Peter has the opportunity

  583. to realise

  584. who the Lord Jesus

  585. really is.

  586. That he has come,

  587. that we might have life

  588. and that we might have

  589. abundant life,

  590. we might have eternal life.

  591. He's come

  592. that our sins

  593. can be forgiven.

  594. He's come

  595. that we can be restored,

  596. that we can be reconciled.

  597. You know,

  598. Jesus goes to the cross

  599. in order that we might be

  600. forgiven

  601. and that it might produce

  602. righteousness

  603. and repentance

  604. in our lives.

  605. And we have an opportunity

  606. today

  607. to repent.

  608. Now,

  609. there are many Christians

  610. in the room

  611. that have given their life

  612. to the Lord Jesus.

  613. those that know

  614. their sins are forgiven.

  615. And yet,

  616. it may be that

  617. in some way

  618. we identify with Peter

  619. this morning

  620. and that we are living

  621. akin to Peter's denial

  622. by our words

  623. and our actions,

  624. by the way that we live.

  625. We deny the Lord Jesus.

  626. Well,

  627. this is an opportunity

  628. for us

  629. to repent,

  630. to come to God.

  631. But it's also

  632. an opportunity

  633. if you've never

  634. come to know

  635. God's grace

  636. in your life,

  637. if you've never

  638. come face to face

  639. with the reality

  640. that there is one

  641. who gave up

  642. his life for you,

  643. who suffered

  644. and died

  645. and bore

  646. the judgment

  647. for your sin,

  648. if there's never

  649. been a time

  650. in your life

  651. where you've known

  652. God's forgiveness

  653. and the peace

  654. that Jesus

  655. offers us,

  656. well,

  657. there's an invitation

  658. today for you

  659. to come.

  660. I want to take you

  661. back to that funeral

  662. on Friday.

  663. The continuing theme

  664. that came through

  665. loud and clear

  666. was that our friend

  667. had peace with God.

  668. A nurse came in

  669. recently and asked her

  670. if there's anything

  671. that she could do

  672. for her,

  673. anything that she

  674. was worried about

  675. and she said this,

  676. she said,

  677. no,

  678. I'm going to be

  679. with my saviour.

  680. She had a peace

  681. in her soul

  682. and there was no

  683. enmity between

  684. her and God.

  685. that relationship

  686. was restored.

  687. It was reconciled.

  688. I hope you have

  689. that peace too.

  690. Lastly,

  691. Jesus has this peace.

  692. This is what gives

  693. me joy this morning.

  694. Jesus has this peace

  695. as he faces

  696. what's to come.

  697. His relationship

  698. with the Father

  699. was never broken.

  700. Even though he must

  701. go through this

  702. devastating experience,

  703. even though we see

  704. the agony

  705. in the garden,

  706. praying to God,

  707. if it be possible,

  708. let this cup

  709. pass from me.

  710. Sweating as it were,

  711. great drops of blood,

  712. just showing us

  713. his full humanity.

  714. But in such turmoil

  715. and agony,

  716. we read these words

  717. and we've read them

  718. today in John 18.

  719. Shall I not drink

  720. the cup

  721. the Father

  722. has given to me?

  723. This was his lot.

  724. This was his portion.

  725. This was his plan.

  726. This is why he came.

  727. So let us fully realize,

  728. let us fully appreciate

  729. the zoomed in details,

  730. all that Jesus

  731. has gone through,

  732. knowing what was to come,

  733. knowing that he is

  734. in complete control.

  735. I want to leave you

  736. a verse

  737. in John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  738. It's a verse

  739. that we often quote

  740. when we preach

  741. from John

  742. and it says this,

  743. these things are written

  744. that you might believe

  745. that Jesus is the Messiah,

  746. the Son of God,

  747. and that believing

  748. you might have life

  749. in his name.

  750. Thank you.
