  1. Well, thank you very much, Pamela, for reading to us.

  2. This is a great passage, and I'm excited this morning to be able to bring it to us.

  3. Thank you, Pamela, for reading.

  4. Let me just pray as we begin.

  5. God, Father, just give us open ears to hear your word.

  6. Speak to each one of us this morning,

  7. and soften our hearts through the Holy Spirit to hear what you have to say.

  8. Amen.

  9. So this morning, we're going to see a death like no other.

  10. We've read our passage.

  11. We know what's going to happen.

  12. And here this morning, we've read and we'll see that King Jesus, he is crucified,

  13. fulfilling messianic prophecy,

  14. taking that substitutionary place to redeem through his death.

  15. That is a big, complicated sentence.

  16. And as we go through, we will see exactly what that means.

  17. You know, this morning, we have our passage, and it is all about Jesus.

  18. There's lots of different people in it, and we'll go through it.

  19. But this passage is all about the Lord Jesus.

  20. You know, there's that phrase, isn't there?

  21. Famous last words.

  22. Normally, it's in the sense of, you know, I'll clean the dishes before bed,

  23. and then my wife will say, famous last words.

  24. That'll never happen.

  25. You know, it's things like that, isn't it?

  26. But, you know, it got me thinking.

  27. Here we have Jesus' famous last words, or really, word.

  28. Because in the Greek, it is one word.

  29. And his words are, it is finished.

  30. And so I looked some others up.

  31. Maybe you know some.

  32. Sometimes people talk about things like this.

  33. You know, Bob Marley, he died quite young.

  34. And his last words, supposedly, were,

  35. money can't buy life.

  36. That's what he said.

  37. Poignant, I would say.

  38. Winston Churchill, he was quite old when he died.

  39. He did a lot.

  40. I'm sure we all know who that is.

  41. He is supposed to have said, I'm bored with it all.

  42. And Bessie Smith, she was a soul singer in America.

  43. And she said, I'm going, but I'm going in the name of the Lord.

  44. Some pretty interesting last words there.

  45. But I'm going to say that it is finished.

  46. There's no greater last words than that.

  47. Jesus has completed fully the plan of salvation.

  48. This plan that was hatched before time even began,

  49. before the world was in existence.

  50. This was the plan.

  51. Now, if you're here this morning and you do not know Jesus,

  52. maybe you've heard of him,

  53. but maybe you're here exploring who he really is

  54. and why he matters.

  55. Then hopefully by the end,

  56. you will see why these words have such a big impact on your life

  57. and why you've got decisions to make.

  58. And if you do know Jesus as your savior,

  59. then we will be reminded of the magnitude of Jesus's work of the cross.

  60. This completed work

  61. and why it should cause us to recoil in horror

  62. at what happened to him

  63. and yet also rejoice in the freedom we now enjoy

  64. through life in his name.

  65. So we've started this passage,

  66. as Pam said,

  67. halfway through a verse.

  68. So we need to know where we've been.

  69. Okay.

  70. I realize you might not have been here the last few weeks.

  71. So where are we?

  72. Well, Jesus has completed his active ministry on earth.

  73. That ends in about John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  74. He then goes with the disciples into the upper room

  75. and he washes their feet

  76. and then he teaches them about how to live once he is gone.

  77. He spends a good few chapters of John teaching them about life after he's away.

  78. And as we just saw very helpfully,

  79. Palm Sunday,

  80. Jesus enters Jerusalem

  81. and he is arrested by the Jewish leaders

  82. and he is handed to Pilate

  83. and Archie and Ian last week.

  84. They took us through exactly what happened in that.

  85. The Jewish leaders,

  86. they demand Jesus's death.

  87. They do not want him.

  88. They reject him.

  89. And yet Pilate finds no fault.

  90. Pilate says,

  91. I can find no fault with this man.

  92. He does not deserve to die.

  93. And yet he gives in.

  94. And the start of 16 says,

  95. finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

  96. Pilate, the people pleaser,

  97. he just hands him over to die.

  98. It's worth remembering as well.

  99. And once again,

  100. that's very helpful that here in our passage this morning,

  101. this is actually Friday.

  102. This is what we now call Good Friday.

  103. The disciples,

  104. they certainly would not have called this Good Friday.

  105. This was a terrible day for them.

  106. So they thought,

  107. but that's where we are.

  108. And it's the day of the preparation before the Passover.

  109. And we'll think about that a little bit later.

  110. So we're going to see this morning,

  111. this is all about Jesus.

  112. It's about Jesus,

  113. the crucified in 16 to 18.

  114. Jesus,

  115. Jesus,

  116. the king in 19 to 22.

  117. Jesus,

  118. the Messiah in 23 to 24.

  119. Jesus,

  120. the substitute in 25 to 27.

  121. And Jesus,

  122. the redeemer.

  123. You know,

  124. at first glance,

  125. it seems that this passage,

  126. you know,

  127. we're not entirely sure what to think.

  128. I don't know about yourself.

  129. Certainly when I first read this,

  130. when I started studying,

  131. I thought,

  132. what am I going to say about this?

  133. It's almost too familiar,

  134. isn't it?

  135. But you know,

  136. really,

  137. this passage,

  138. it almost seems at first glance

  139. to show Jesus humanity.

  140. But really,

  141. as we delve deeper into it,

  142. we'll really see that Jesus

  143. is in fact God.

  144. And that is what John

  145. is trying to show us.

  146. John 20 verse 31,

    John 20:31

  147. the whole reason that he writes,

  148. he says,

  149. but these are written

  150. that you may believe

  151. that Jesus is the Messiah,

  152. the Son of God,

  153. and that by believing

  154. you may have life in his name.

  155. That is why John is writing.

  156. He is showing that this Jesus

  157. is all of these things,

  158. but that all of these things

  159. that he is truly God.

  160. So let's start with Jesus,

  161. the crucified.

  162. So verse 16,

  163. Pilate,

  164. he gives in.

  165. He just wants to please the Jews.

  166. As was said in that video,

  167. there was real tensions.

  168. Pilate was in charge of this area.

  169. He was the Roman official,

  170. but he needed to keep it under wraps

  171. and he was worried

  172. about what the Jews were doing.

  173. And we need to not gloss over

  174. the crucifixion

  175. because of familiarity.

  176. You know,

  177. Brunsfield's logo,

  178. it's got a cross in it,

  179. doesn't it?

  180. I don't know anyone here

  181. might have a cross necklace on.

  182. People wear them.

  183. It might be a fashion thing

  184. or it might be to show their faith.

  185. But crosses are common symbols,

  186. aren't they?

  187. They're common symbols.

  188. We see them.

  189. And it quite rightly

  190. is the central image,

  191. the central symbol

  192. of the Christian faith.

  193. But you know,

  194. to first century people,

  195. wearing a cross around your neck

  196. would be just totally abhorrent.

  197. A symbol of death,

  198. of shame.

  199. A horrifying symbol

  200. to put anywhere.

  201. And that's what the cross was.

  202. Crucifixion,

  203. it was a method

  204. of corporal punishment

  205. that the Romans

  206. had designed

  207. or potentially

  208. they stole it

  209. from the Persians.

  210. Don't really know.

  211. But it was to be

  212. as drawn out,

  213. as painful,

  214. as shameful

  215. as possible.

  216. And it was

  217. kept

  218. for the worst

  219. of the worst,

  220. the non-Roman citizens,

  221. those

  222. who just,

  223. the Roman society

  224. just didn't care for.

  225. And they used it

  226. as a deterrent

  227. for others.

  228. The person,

  229. they were stripped naked.

  230. They were beaten

  231. as we saw last week.

  232. They were elevated

  233. in a place

  234. that everyone could see,

  235. lifted up on high.

  236. They had nails

  237. in their hands

  238. and their feet.

  239. And they died

  240. by suffocating slowly.

  241. As they hung there.

  242. The crucifixion

  243. was a horrible

  244. method of death.

  245. And this is what

  246. happened to Jesus.

  247. Now you might be saying,

  248. yeah, well,

  249. there's two others there.

  250. They're crucified as well.

  251. What about them?

  252. I'm sure there was

  253. many others,

  254. countless others

  255. that were crucified

  256. in their time.

  257. That's true.

  258. That is right.

  259. And everyone dies,

  260. don't they?

  261. That is true

  262. for each and every one of us.

  263. But Jesus

  264. was different.

  265. Isaiah 53, 12

  266. says this,

  267. therefore,

  268. I will give him

  269. a portion among the great

  270. and he will divide

  271. the spoils

  272. with the strong

  273. because he poured

  274. out his life

  275. unto death

  276. and was numbered

  277. with the transgressors.

  278. He bore the sin

  279. of many

  280. and made intercession

  281. for the transgressors.

  282. Jesus was different.

  283. Yes, he died

  284. in the same way

  285. but we'll go on

  286. to see why

  287. it was so different.

  288. Pilate could find

  289. no fault.

  290. Pilate could find

  291. no fault

  292. in an earthly way

  293. but Jesus had done

  294. nothing wrong

  295. at all.

  296. He was the sinless one,

  297. the one who had done

  298. no wrong

  299. and that was only possible

  300. because he was truly God.

  301. John actually here,

  302. you've maybe noticed,

  303. he doesn't actually mention

  304. much about the cross.

  305. He doesn't mention

  306. the details,

  307. what actually happened

  308. physically.

  309. He's more interested

  310. in the why.

  311. Why does this happen?

  312. Well, the innocent one

  313. has been wrongly accused

  314. and put to death

  315. and yet this was all

  316. part of the plan.

  317. That takes us to Jesus,

  318. the king,

  319. in 19 to 22.

  320. So we have Pilate's inscription

  321. here on the cross.

  322. This would have been a plaque

  323. and it would have gone

  324. above the person

  325. and we've seen

  326. that over the last few weeks

  327. Ian took us through

  328. that Pilate questions Jesus.

  329. He says,

  330. are you a king?

  331. And Jesus says

  332. that his kingdom,

  333. this is Jesus speaking,

  334. he says,

  335. my kingdom

  336. is for the world

  337. but it is not

  338. from the world.

  339. Pilate couldn't get it.

  340. It wasn't an earthly kingdom

  341. that Jesus was talking about.

  342. But we saw that Jesus,

  343. he was mocked

  344. for this.

  345. The Roman battalion,

  346. this was 600 soldiers,

  347. they dressed him in a robe,

  348. they bowed down mockingly

  349. in front of him

  350. and they made a crown of thorns

  351. and a staff

  352. to mock him.

  353. Then we have that shocking statement

  354. from the chief priests,

  355. these Jewish leaders

  356. who say,

  357. we have no king

  358. but Caesar.

  359. Something that in their faith

  360. just goes against

  361. everything that they should believe.

  362. You know,

  363. this inscription,

  364. this was common

  365. and what it actually was

  366. was that at the top

  367. it said the person's name.

  368. So in this case,

  369. Jesus of Nazareth.

  370. And at the bottom

  371. was actually

  372. their accusation,

  373. why they are being killed.

  374. It was used as a deterrent

  375. in the crucifixion.

  376. It was used

  377. so that no one

  378. would ever do

  379. that crime again.

  380. You know,

  381. the two people

  382. either side of Jesus,

  383. they would have their name

  384. and then they would have

  385. what they had done wrong.

  386. They would have murderer

  387. or they would have robber,

  388. whatever it was.

  389. So it makes sense,

  390. Jesus of Nazareth.

  391. But what doesn't make sense

  392. is the king of the Jews.

  393. Jesus is being killed

  394. for being

  395. the king of the Jews.

  396. The chief priests here,

  397. they're absolutely livid.

  398. They say,

  399. do not write

  400. the king of the Jews.

  401. That's not right.

  402. But that this man

  403. claimed to be

  404. the king of the Jews.

  405. You know,

  406. they were so angry

  407. because everyone

  408. could see it

  409. and everyone

  410. could read it.

  411. Jesus was lifted up

  412. on a place

  413. that was raised up.

  414. It was near the entrance

  415. to the city

  416. so people were walking

  417. in and out.

  418. As we've heard,

  419. it was a busy time of year.

  420. People would be coming

  421. and going.

  422. They wouldn't all fit

  423. in the city.

  424. They'd have to go in

  425. and come back out

  426. to stay in different places.

  427. And it was written

  428. in the three main languages

  429. of the world

  430. of that day.

  431. Aramaic,

  432. Greek,

  433. and Latin.

  434. Everyone could see it

  435. and the Jews hated this.

  436. They hated

  437. that everyone

  438. could see it.

  439. So Jesus is being killed

  440. for being the king

  441. of the Jews.

  442. He doesn't look like a king,

  443. does he?

  444. Which king have you seen

  445. that looks like that?

  446. Where are the conquering armies?

  447. Where is the throne room?

  448. Where are the royal subjects

  449. who do his bidding?

  450. What kind of king

  451. is this?

  452. You know,

  453. the true king,

  454. he conquers evil

  455. by letting evil

  456. conquer him.

  457. Now that doesn't seem

  458. to make sense,

  459. but Jesus,

  460. he gains the victory

  461. through an act

  462. of self-giving love.

  463. Sometimes it's called

  464. the upside-down kingdom.

  465. Jesus came to serve,

  466. not to be served.

  467. And at the end here,

  468. Pilate in 22,

  469. he's kind of over the Jews,

  470. he's over trying

  471. to please them,

  472. and he just says,

  473. what I have written,

  474. I have written.

  475. He's dismissing them,

  476. saying,

  477. get out,

  478. basically.

  479. Pilate here,

  480. despite his ignorance

  481. in the previous section,

  482. he unknowingly

  483. just proclaims the truth

  484. that Jesus is

  485. the king of the Jews.

  486. In chapter 18,

  487. Pilate says,

  488. what is truth

  489. to Jesus?

  490. And yet here,

  491. unknowingly,

  492. he writes the truth.

  493. King Jesus

  494. being killed.

  495. So that takes us

  496. to Jesus,

  497. the Messiah.

  498. So this section

  499. where the soldiers,

  500. where they cast lots,

  501. you know,

  502. this,

  503. at first glance,

  504. this can just seem

  505. a little bit

  506. of an odd detail

  507. to have in.

  508. We can read it

  509. and kind of just

  510. gloss over it

  511. and go,

  512. well,

  513. I'll go to the next bit.

  514. I'll go to the next bit.

  515. But what happens here

  516. is that the soldiers,

  517. they've put Jesus

  518. on the cross to die

  519. along with the two others,

  520. okay?

  521. Now,

  522. they did this

  523. at nine o'clock

  524. in the morning.

  525. Now,

  526. the crucifixion

  527. lasted all day.

  528. It could last all day.

  529. Here,

  530. in this case,

  531. it lasted about six hours.

  532. So it was a long day

  533. and the soldiers,

  534. they would have to

  535. guard the cross,

  536. make sure that people

  537. didn't come to try

  538. and,

  539. you know,

  540. stop what was going on.

  541. That was their jobs.

  542. So what they would do is,

  543. and this would have been

  544. commonplace,

  545. is that they would,

  546. they would just take

  547. the person's clothes

  548. who was being killed.

  549. They weren't going to

  550. need them,

  551. were they?

  552. So they would take them.

  553. But what they do

  554. is that there's

  555. this undergarment

  556. and it is woven

  557. in one piece

  558. and they decide

  559. not to break it apart,

  560. it will ruin it,

  561. so they cast lots.

  562. So what these Roman soldiers

  563. actually do here

  564. is that they unwittingly

  565. fulfill a thousand-year-old

  566. prophecy.

  567. A prophecy from the time

  568. of David,

  569. a thousand years

  570. before Jesus,

  571. is here on the cross.

  572. And it's quoted there,

  573. and it might be

  574. in inverted commas

  575. in your passage,

  576. they divided my clothes

  577. among them

  578. and cast lots

  579. for my garment.

  580. Now that is a quote

  581. from Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:18

  582. verse 18.

  583. Graham read from that

  584. Psalm at the beginning.

  585. And that there

  586. is a verse

  587. from a prophetic

  588. Messianic psalm.

  589. Basically what that means

  590. is that it's a prophetic psalm,

  591. so it's looking

  592. to the future,

  593. looking to when

  594. the Messiah will come

  595. and that that person

  596. will fulfill

  597. certain things.

  598. That is what happens here.

  599. The video helpfully

  600. showed us that

  601. Jesus coming in

  602. to Jerusalem

  603. in that way

  604. was fulfilling

  605. the Messianic prophecies

  606. and likewise

  607. this happens here.

  608. You might be thinking,

  609. so what?

  610. What's the relevance here?

  611. Well, it shows us

  612. that the Bible

  613. is the true

  614. inspired Word of God.

  615. This fulfillment here

  616. shows that Jesus

  617. is, as John 1 says,

  618. the Word

  619. who became flesh

  620. and made His dwelling

  621. among us.

  622. Jesus is the Messiah.

  623. He's not just

  624. another man being killed.

  625. He is the Messiah,

  626. the promised King

  627. who would come

  628. to conquer.

  629. In verse 18,

  630. where Jesus

  631. is crucified

  632. with others,

  633. that is a fulfillment

  634. of that passage

  635. I read in 53

  636. that shows that

  637. Jesus will be numbered

  638. with the transgressors.

  639. He will be killed

  640. with other people,

  641. basically.

  642. Something that is

  643. completely outwith

  644. of Jesus' control.

  645. In a humanly sense,

  646. He couldn't make

  647. that happen.

  648. In verse 28,

  649. Jesus fulfills

  650. Psalm 69,

  651. we'll see later on,

  652. by being given vinegar

  653. for His thirst.

  654. Soldiers offer Him

  655. this vinegar.

  656. You know,

  657. the Jews,

  658. they rejected Jesus

  659. as King,

  660. as their Messiah,

  661. because He wasn't

  662. the King

  663. that they either

  664. expected

  665. or that they wanted.

  666. One of the guys

  667. in the video

  668. said that,

  669. that they expected

  670. somebody to come in

  671. to conquer the Romans,

  672. to set up

  673. a Jewish nation again,

  674. to have an Israel,

  675. and they expected

  676. this King to come.

  677. He was not

  678. the hero they wanted,

  679. but He was

  680. the promised Messiah.

  681. So that takes us

  682. to Jesus,

  683. the substitute.

  684. We've seen Jesus

  685. crucified,

  686. we've seen Jesus

  687. the King,

  688. Jesus the Messiah,

  689. and now Jesus

  690. the substitute.

  691. You know,

  692. again,

  693. we have another

  694. little section here

  695. in 25 to 27

  696. that we can read

  697. and we can just

  698. sort of say,

  699. okay,

  700. and then move

  701. on to the next bit.

  702. But what happens

  703. here is amazing.

  704. Jesus,

  705. He sees some of the

  706. people that

  707. are watching.

  708. So that's what

  709. would happen.

  710. People would go,

  711. maybe it would be

  712. people that they know

  713. or people would just

  714. watch out of some

  715. sort of morbid interest.

  716. But here He sees

  717. some of His friends

  718. and His family.

  719. And what He does

  720. is He calls on John,

  721. the disciple,

  722. the person writing

  723. this account

  724. of Jesus' life.

  725. He says,

  726. look after my mother.

  727. And likewise,

  728. He says to His mother,

  729. look after John.

  730. You know,

  731. Jesus' mother Mary,

  732. we reckon that

  733. most likely she was

  734. a widow by this point.

  735. So it would have been

  736. the cultural practice

  737. that she would have

  738. been looked after.

  739. And Jesus,

  740. knowing that He

  741. was about to go,

  742. says to John,

  743. please look after

  744. my mother.

  745. Take her in

  746. and look after her.

  747. Jesus is ensuring

  748. that His mother

  749. is looked after

  750. those whom He loves

  751. are cared for

  752. once He is gone.

  753. And there's two

  754. sort of side things

  755. to note here

  756. before the main point.

  757. The side thing,

  758. one is that John,

  759. the writer,

  760. is actually watching

  761. the events unfold.

  762. Last couple of weeks,

  763. we've learned from Archie

  764. and Ian that they really

  765. enjoy true crime

  766. and true crime videos

  767. and podcasts

  768. and they like watching

  769. these things.

  770. But what do the police

  771. look for when they're

  772. trying to solve something?

  773. Well, they look for

  774. eyewitnesses,

  775. don't they?

  776. Nowadays,

  777. they want dashcams

  778. and CCTV

  779. and all that kind of thing

  780. and maybe WhatsApp

  781. messages nowadays as well.

  782. But really,

  783. it's eyewitnesses,

  784. people that were there

  785. that saw it,

  786. that can testify

  787. to what truly happened.

  788. And that is John.

  789. John watched

  790. these things occur.

  791. So we know

  792. that it is a trustworthy

  793. source of information.

  794. The second little side note

  795. is that John

  796. just obeys straight away.

  797. It says that

  798. at the end of 27,

  799. from that time on,

  800. the disciple took her

  801. into his home.

  802. One example of how to react

  803. when God calls us

  804. to do something.

  805. Of course,

  806. we do not get

  807. the same call

  808. directly like

  809. Jesus gave to John.

  810. But God calls us

  811. in other ways

  812. to do other things

  813. for him.

  814. And we should obey

  815. like John obeyed.

  816. But you know,

  817. it's more than that.

  818. Jesus is telling John

  819. to take his place

  820. as son to Mary

  821. to care for her.

  822. And you know,

  823. similarly,

  824. I can't say that,

  825. similarly,

  826. Jesus is taking

  827. John's place

  828. on the cross.

  829. Now, it wasn't that

  830. John deserved

  831. a crucifixion.

  832. It wasn't that John

  833. was a murderer,

  834. a robber,

  835. things like this.

  836. But John,

  837. like all of us,

  838. had done wrong.

  839. And he had to face

  840. God's wrath

  841. for sin.

  842. And why?

  843. You know,

  844. why?

  845. Maybe you're sitting

  846. there thinking,

  847. but why is that

  848. the case?

  849. Well,

  850. Peter,

  851. very helpfully

  852. this morning,

  853. talked us through

  854. that,

  855. that that relationship

  856. is broken.

  857. God,

  858. the creator God,

  859. made everything

  860. perfect,

  861. and yet sin came in

  862. and broke that

  863. relationship between

  864. God and man.

  865. Sin causes a

  866. separation from us

  867. and God

  868. that needs

  869. fixed.

  870. Jesus is

  871. the plan of

  872. salvation.

  873. And we need

  874. to be made right.

  875. Why do we need

  876. to be made right?

  877. Well,

  878. spend eternity

  879. in heaven.

  880. We don't know

  881. much about heaven.

  882. The Bible doesn't

  883. say an awful lot

  884. about heaven.

  885. But essentially,

  886. heaven is eternity

  887. with God.

  888. And God cannot

  889. have us there

  890. if we are not

  891. made right,

  892. if we are not

  893. perfect

  894. as we should be.

  895. And we're not,

  896. are we?

  897. You know,

  898. if we had a

  899. plaque with our

  900. name on it,

  901. and we had our

  902. accusations underneath,

  903. I don't think

  904. any of them would

  905. be particularly

  906. terrible,

  907. so to speak,

  908. as society might

  909. say.

  910. But you know

  911. what?

  912. I would not like

  913. my sins to be

  914. written on a

  915. plaque for all

  916. to see.

  917. We have all

  918. done wrong.

  919. We all have

  920. sinned.

  921. But Jesus,

  922. he had done

  923. no wrong.

  924. That was only

  925. possible because

  926. he was God.

  927. But he takes

  928. that place

  929. for everyone

  930. else.

  931. So that we

  932. may be made

  933. righteous,

  934. just means to

  935. be made right,

  936. looked on as

  937. innocent by God

  938. because of the

  939. work of the

  940. cross.

  941. If you're not

  942. a believer in

  943. Jesus today,

  944. you've not

  945. trusted him

  946. with your

  947. future.

  948. If you've

  949. not repented

  950. for all the

  951. wrong things

  952. that you've

  953. done,

  954. we know

  955. that we

  956. have,

  957. then I

  958. implore you

  959. to address

  960. that this

  961. morning,

  962. this very

  963. day.

  964. It is the

  965. most important

  966. thing.

  967. And that

  968. takes us to

  969. our final

  970. thing we see

  971. about Jesus,

  972. the Redeemer,

  973. in 28 to

  974. 30.

  975. So up to

  976. verse 27,

  977. we've had the

  978. first three

  979. hours on the

  980. cross.

  981. Okay?

  982. And then

  983. between 27 and

  984. 28,

  985. which John

  986. doesn't talk

  987. about,

  988. but you can

  989. read it in

  990. the other

  991. gospels,

  992. we have the

  993. three hours

  994. of darkness.

  995. Now we know

  996. from those other

  997. accounts of

  998. Jesus' life that

  999. Christ at this

  1000. point suffers.

  1001. He is forsaken

  1002. by the Father

  1003. and he takes

  1004. that just

  1005. punishment

  1006. that we deserve

  1007. because of our

  1008. rebellion and our

  1009. sinful ways.

  1010. So Jesus has

  1011. borne this and

  1012. then in verse

  1013. 28, it

  1014. says,

  1015. later,

  1016. showing a

  1017. period of

  1018. time has

  1019. passed.

  1020. Knowing that

  1021. everything had

  1022. now been

  1023. finished.

  1024. You might say,

  1025. well, how did

  1026. Jesus know

  1027. everything was

  1028. finished?

  1029. Well, one, he

  1030. has taken that

  1031. punishment in

  1032. those three

  1033. hours of

  1034. darkness.

  1035. The work has

  1036. been done,

  1037. but he also

  1038. knows because he

  1039. is God that

  1040. his death is

  1041. about to come.

  1042. He is about to

  1043. give up his

  1044. life, as it

  1045. says.

  1046. His

  1047. substitutionary

  1048. death is

  1049. imminent.

  1050. He can only

  1051. know that because

  1052. he can willingly

  1053. give it up.

  1054. So Jesus, he

  1055. says, I am

  1056. thirsty, in other

  1057. versions it says,

  1058. I thirst.

  1059. So he takes

  1060. this drink from

  1061. the soldiers.

  1062. So as I said,

  1063. the soldiers,

  1064. they've been out

  1065. for about six

  1066. hours at this

  1067. point in the

  1068. heat of the

  1069. day in Jerusalem,

  1070. a hot land,

  1071. and this

  1072. wine vinegar,

  1073. this was just a

  1074. drink that they

  1075. would have to

  1076. keep themselves

  1077. going.

  1078. It was their

  1079. job to stay

  1080. there.

  1081. I presume,

  1082. being the Roman

  1083. Empire, they

  1084. were not allowed

  1085. to go on breaks

  1086. or anything like

  1087. that.

  1088. So this was just

  1089. a drink that

  1090. they used for

  1091. thirst as they

  1092. went through

  1093. the day.

  1094. It's worth noting

  1095. that this was a

  1096. different drink to

  1097. what was offered

  1098. to Jesus, the

  1099. drink with gall,

  1100. it's sometimes

  1101. called, before

  1102. the cross.

  1103. That was a

  1104. sedative, that

  1105. was an ancient

  1106. painkiller that

  1107. was offered to

  1108. the person to

  1109. dull the pain,

  1110. to dull the

  1111. senses as they

  1112. went to a

  1113. crucifixion.

  1114. But Jesus, he

  1115. refused that

  1116. because he had

  1117. to be in his

  1118. full mind to

  1119. take the

  1120. punishment of

  1121. the cross.

  1122. But this here,

  1123. Jesus says, I

  1124. thirst, and he

  1125. takes this wine

  1126. vinegar.

  1127. And it is

  1128. lifted to him on

  1129. the stalk of a

  1130. hyssop plant.

  1131. So backtracking a

  1132. wee bit, we know

  1133. it's Friday, it's

  1134. the day of the

  1135. preparation of the

  1136. Passover.

  1137. Passover.

  1138. So the

  1139. Passover is on

  1140. the Saturday, the

  1141. Sabbath, the

  1142. Jewish holy day, it

  1143. was the week was

  1144. building up to

  1145. that.

  1146. And the Jews, they

  1147. would kill the

  1148. Passover lamb and

1149. they would eat it and

  1150. they would celebrate

  1151. that on the

  1152. Saturday.

  1153. But being the

  1154. Sabbath, the Jewish

  1155. holy day, they had

  1156. rules that they

  1157. couldn't do things

  1158. like that.

  1159. Modern day

  1160. equivalent, they

  1161. couldn't turn the

  1162. light bulb on, they

  1163. couldn't switch on the

1164. oven, it all had to

1165. be done on the day of

  1166. the preparation, on the

  1167. Friday, the day before.

  1168. And the Passover

  1169. festival, it remembers

  1170. when the Israelites

  1171. were rescued from

  1172. Egypt.

1173. You can read that in

  1174. Exodus 12, the

  1175. Israelites, God's

  1176. people, they were in

  1177. Egypt and they were

  1178. saved out of Egypt

  1179. and they were spared

  1180. the plague of the

  1181. death of the

  1182. firstborn son.

1183. And they did that by

  1184. killing a lamb and

  1185. spreading its blood on

  1186. the doorposts of their

  1187. homes.

  1188. When God saw that

1189. blood on the posts, then

  1190. he passed over and

  1191. death was avoided.

  1192. That's what happened

  1193. back in Exodus 12.

1194. So why am I telling

  1195. you that?

  1196. Well, in Exodus 12,

    Exodus 12:22

  1197. verse 22, they

  1198. instructed that they

  1199. are to use the

  1200. branches of the

  1201. hyssop plant to spread

  1202. the blood of the

  1203. lamb.

  1204. Jesus is the

  1205. sacrificed lamb.

  1206. Allowing punishment

  1207. and death to be

  1208. avoided, to be passed

  1209. over through obedience

1210. to God and trust in

  1211. him.

1212. Ian last week, he took

  1213. us through the brutality

  1214. of the flogging.

1215. How it would just rip

  1216. someone's back open.

  1217. It was a horrible

  1218. thing.

  1219. And the people often

  1220. died from that alone,

1221. never mind making it to

  1222. the crucifixion.

  1223. So blood was running

  1224. down this cross that

1225. Jesus was on from his

  1226. back.

  1227. running down from his

1228. head on the crown of

  1229. thorns, the beatings

1230. that he had had, the

  1231. nails through his hands

  1232. and his feet.

  1233. Jesus is the

  1234. redeemer.

  1235. His blood was shed.

1236. He is paying the debt

  1237. for others.

1238. The blood of the lamb

  1239. pays the debt.

  1240. Hebrews 9, it talks

  1241. about the ancient blood

  1242. sacrificed on many

  1243. altars in Israel.

1244. And it talks about the

  1245. Lord Jesus.

1246. And in verse 22, it

  1247. says that without the

  1248. shedding of blood, there

  1249. is no forgiveness.

  1250. But Jesus' blood was

1251. shed because he was the

  1252. lamb, the sacrificial

1253. lamb that allows God to

  1254. pass over in judgment

1255. and allows people to be

  1256. saved.

  1257. And after this, Jesus

1258. receives the drink and he

  1259. says his famous last

  1260. word, it is finished.

  1261. The work was done.

  1262. It was complete.

1263. The plan of salvation that

  1264. was hatched before time

1265. has been carried out to the

  1266. full.

1267. And with that, he bowed his

1268. head and gave up his

  1269. spirit.

1270. Jesus gives up his spirit.

1271. He gives up his life in a

1272. way that we can never do,

1273. knowing that his work was

  1274. done.

  1275. Jesus' suffering on the

1276. cross can give us freedom

1277. if we trust in him and if

1278. we seek forgiveness for our

  1279. wrong.

  1280. The fulfillment of prophecy

1281. that we've seen here, it

1282. shows that Jesus wasn't just

  1283. another person dying.

  1284. It wasn't just another

  1285. person killed by the

  1286. Romans.

1287. but that he was God

  1288. himself in human form.

  1289. And you know, as

  1290. Christians, if we're sitting

1291. here today and you believe

1292. all this and that is

1293. brilliant, then we want to

  1294. emulate the Lord Jesus.

1295. Bearing in mind that we

1296. will never match up to how

  1297. he is.

1298. But we want to finish God's

  1299. plan for our lives.

1300. God has a plan for each and

  1301. every one of us.

1302. We are to live that out and

1303. seek to end our lives well.

1304. Paul, in one of his letters

  1305. in 2 Timothy 4, 7 to 8, which

1306. is potentially some of his

1307. last words that he spoke or

1308. certainly wrote down anyway, he

  1309. says this.

  1310. Paul says,

1311. Let's run the race well and finish

  1312. strongly.

1313. Remembering that our home is

1314. actually in heaven and that we

1315. are just foreigners in this

1316. world and that we have a better

  1317. place to go to.

1318. Let me just pray as we finish.

1319. God and Father, I just thank you

  1320. for your word.

1321. Thank you so much for the Lord

  1322. Jesus.

1323. That that plan was hatched before

1324. time even began, before the

  1325. creation of this world.

1326. That the Lord Jesus would do the

1327. will of the Father and go down and

1328. be that lamb who was sacrificed.

  1329. Christ.

1330. We thank you for the truth that

1331. we've seen in these this passage

  1332. this morning.

1333. And we pray that these things will

1334. continue in our minds and in our

1335. hearts this week as we think

  1336. towards Easter.

1337. And we thank you so much for the

1338. glorious news of the resurrection.

1339. that the Lord Jesus rose again and

1340. that he is at the right hand of the

1341. Father on high and that we worship a

1342. God who is not dead but is alive.

  1343. Amen.
