  1. Well friends, it's lovely to see you this morning.

  2. My name is Graham, if you've not met.

  3. I'm the pastor here of the church

  4. and it's a real joy to get back into Daniel chapter five today.

  5. So why don't we pray just as we get going this morning.

  6. But this is the one to whom I will look.

  7. He who is humble and contrite in spirit

  8. and trembles at my word.

  9. And so Father, we pray for that spirit today

  10. in each of our hearts as we come to your inspired holy word.

  11. Father, that you would raise our eyes

  12. as we've been singing at the start

  13. and set our minds on the fact that you are the God

  14. who is so far above the things of this earth.

  15. And so Father, may we leave today

  16. with a bigger picture of who you are today

  17. because we have heard from you in your word.

  18. And we pray these things in Jesus's wonderful name.

  19. Amen.

  20. So friends, as we get back into Daniel chapter five today,

  21. here's what I want you to do really simply for us to do

  22. is just take a couple of deep breaths.

  23. So apparently we take about 2,000 of those breaths a day.

  24. I don't know how people work that out,

  25. but apparently we take 2,000 breaths a day.

  26. Now, if the 2,000 times table is not your strong point,

  27. that works out at about 730,000 breaths

  28. that you and I take a year.

  29. Now, that's a lot of breaths.

  30. And it'll be no bad thing for us to be aware of our breathing

  31. over the next 30 minutes or so,

  32. because this is what the Bible tells us.

  33. It tells us that the very first one,

  34. the very last one,

  35. and every single breath that we take in between

  36. are given to us by the God who created us.

  37. Now, the book of Daniel has been so good for our souls

  38. because it's helped anchor our hearts

  39. and our minds in the truth of God's sovereignty

  40. so that every single thing that happens in our world

  41. happens according to his plan and his purposes.

  42. So that sovereignty of God,

  43. it extends all the way up to the mega narrative of history,

  44. and it extends all the way down

  45. to the micro narrative of our existence.

  46. And this is the words of J.I. Packer,

  47. who we started this series with.

  48. He said,

  49. to know that nothing happens in God's world

  50. apart from God's will may frighten the godless.

  51. And this is what we're going to see.

  52. But it stabilizes the saints.

  53. And so two things flow from that truth about breath.

  54. Two things flow from it.

  55. Number one is that breath is gift.

  56. This three-in-one God who we worship today,

  57. this holy God,

  58. Father, Son, and Spirit,

  59. out of his fullness,

  60. delighted to create life in all its beauty

  61. and in all its diversity.

  62. And that means that we are dependent on our creator

  63. for absolutely everything.

  64. We breathe today not because we decided to get up.

  65. We breathe today because this God is gracious

  66. and he is good.

  67. Breath is gift.

  68. And also breath is accountability.

  69. So one day we're going to have to stand before our maker

  70. and we're going to have to give an account to him

  71. of what we did with those breaths that he gave us.

  72. Now we all like to know,

  73. if you're a student here today,

  74. I've had many conversations with you guys

  75. over the last couple of weeks,

  76. we love to know the exam questions before they come up.

  77. Yeah?

  78. Maybe you were that annoying kid at school.

  79. Is this going to be in the test?

  80. Well, here's the exam question right at the end.

  81. God gives us it before the end of time.

  82. He says, and you'll see this in the passage,

  83. Daniel says it to Belshazzar,

  84. really simply,

  85. did you honour me with the breath that I gave you?

  86. And this is a passage that is going to throw us upon

  87. a bigger view of God

  88. than I think we often have.

  89. Do we understand that every breath that we have,

  90. everything that we have

  91. is from his wonderful, gracious and good hands?

  92. That's precisely the message that we see

  93. a nobly need 80-year-old exile

  94. from Jerusalem called Daniel

  95. delivered to a young, hot-headed gun king

  96. who thinks that he owns the world.

  97. This passage asks us to consider the question,

  98. who is the man?

  99. Right?

  100. As we see, these two men have a word off.

  101. Who is the man in this passage?

  102. Now, here's the context

  103. that gets us to the beating heart of this chapter.

  104. You won't necessarily get it

  105. from a plain reading of the text.

  106. Here's the context.

  107. 20 years have passed in the narrative

  108. since the end of chapter 4,

  109. which you could argue

  110. was a huge high point of the book

  111. because you had,

  112. if you remember this from a few weeks ago,

  113. you had,

  114. this was the news at 10.

  115. This was the news that was doing the rounds

  116. in Babylon.

  117. From the highest point,

  118. from the highest person,

  119. he was declaring,

  120. King Nebuchadnezzar,

  121. the guy at the top of the food chain,

  122. the top of the world,

  123. he was declaring at verse 3

  124. that God's kingdom

  125. is an everlasting kingdom.

  126. God's kingdom,

  127. not mine,

  128. his.

  129. And that is an astonishing admission

  130. in the book of Daniel.

  131. And you can understand

  132. that the first readers of this book,

  133. when they come up with,

  134. come up against chapter 4,

  135. they're thinking to themselves,

  136. is now the time?

  137. Is now the time

  138. that God is going to show

  139. his glory to the world?

  140. Is now the time

  141. that revival in Babylon

  142. is going to kick off?

  143. But that is not how

  144. the next 20 years go.

  145. You ready for a wee

  146. potted history lesson here?

  147. You seem really keen.

  148. Let's dig in and dive.

  149. Okay.

  150. Nebuchadnezzar,

  151. this king,

  152. he dies in the year 526.

  153. He's had a really long reign,

  154. 43 years by that time.

  155. He is succeeded by his son.

  156. And the story goes

  157. that his son

  158. is assassinated

  159. by his brother-in-law.

  160. You keeping up?

  161. Before that brother-in-law's son

  162. takes over after his death.

  163. And then that son-in-law

  164. is taken out.

  165. And this man called Nabonides

  166. is placed on the throne.

  167. And at some point,

  168. he goes away on royal business.

  169. Now whether he's pushed,

  170. whether he jumped,

  171. we're not sure,

  172. but he goes away

  173. in royal business.

  174. And his son,

  175. Belshazzar,

  176. takes his place

  177. as the de facto king.

  178. And that's the guy

  179. that you meet

  180. in verse 1 of chapter 5

  181. if you're wondering

  182. who he is.

  183. So a lot has happened

  184. in 20 years

  185. in terms of the throne.

  186. And that explains,

  187. if you notice

  188. that little detail

  189. in the text,

  190. why Belshazzar,

  191. he can only offer

  192. to whoever

  193. interprets this dream

  194. the title of being,

  195. did you notice it?

  196. Third in the kingdom.

  197. Because he is second

  198. and his dad is first.

  199. So again,

  200. this is just history,

  201. why this stands up

  202. to history.

  203. This is why he can say

  204. and only offer

  205. the third in the kingdom.

  206. But here's the point

  207. of that history lesson.

  208. It's more than just

  209. that thought.

  210. This passing of time,

  211. this cloak and dagger thing

  212. that's going on

  213. at the top of the food chain

  214. for power in Babylon,

  215. what that means

  216. is that

  217. Nebuchadnezzar's confession

  218. in chapter 4,

  219. not only has it been

  220. massively diluted

  221. with the passing of time,

  222. but I imagine

  223. by the time

  224. that you hit chapter 5,

  225. it's been all but forgotten.

  226. Who is the Lord?

  227. And Daniel is no longer

  228. a mover and shaker

  229. in Babylon.

  230. He is just consigned

  231. to the sides.

  232. And Belshazzar

  233. is intent on mocking

  234. any God

  235. who is not his.

  236. Now those three things

  237. come together

  238. to make a royal triage

  239. of discouragement

  240. for God's people.

  241. So here's the question.

  242. Is all that stuff

  243. we thought about

  244. about breath up top,

  245. is it still true

  246. even when I can't see it?

  247. Is it still true

  248. when I go to the office

  249. tomorrow

  250. and I go to that

  251. end of year's drinks party

  252. and it gets way out of hand

  253. and as I hear,

  254. and this is what's been

  255. so great about that

  256. sermon survey

  257. that we've run

  258. over the past number of weeks,

  259. we'll do it again

  260. at the end

  261. to hear about

  262. what some of us

  263. are facing,

  264. the work cultures

  265. that we're in.

  266. Is God still giving

  267. this breath thing

  268. when I hear people

  269. mocking his name,

  270. when I'm surrounded

  271. by gossip and slander,

  272. when people don't seem

  273. to care to hoots

  274. about the Lord?

  275. When you have

  276. that family gathering,

  277. when people are

  278. just not interested

  279. in the slightest

  280. about your faith?

  281. When the 4th of July

  282. rolls around,

  283. our one,

  284. not the American one,

  285. and new people

  286. with new agendas

  287. are going to be

  288. elected to power?

  289. Is it still true?

  290. I don't know

  291. if you saw

  292. the Scottish census results

  293. that were released

  294. this week,

  295. the one where

  296. apparently now

  297. 51.1% of people

  298. in our country

  299. tick the no religion box.

  300. That is up

  301. from 36.7%

  302. in 2001.

  303. Is God still sovereign

  304. when all I see

  305. around me

  306. is this Belshazzar spirit

  307. that just wants

  308. to defy and mock God?

  309. Is it still true?

  310. Friends,

  311. here's two things

  312. that Daniel chapter 5

    Daniel 5 chapter mention

  313. teaches us.

  314. And if you're taking notes,

  315. these are our two points

  316. that we want to get

  317. across today.

  318. Here's the first one,

  319. and it's a warning

  320. from God to the world.

  321. It's that you're playing

  322. a dangerous game

  323. if you're mocking

  324. his purposes.

  325. You're playing

  326. a really dangerous game

  327. because at verse 1,

  328. do you see how

  329. Belshazzar effectively,

  330. he throws a massive

  331. drinking party,

  332. doesn't he?

  333. There's been enough

  334. corporate nights out,

  335. uni football nights out

  336. to know what these

  337. things are like.

  338. Just notice

  339. who is there

  340. in the text.

  341. Again, notice

  342. who's there in the text.

  343. A thousand of his lords,

  344. his wife,

  345. plural,

  346. his concubine,

  347. plural.

  348. And it's repeated twice

  349. there in the text,

  350. and so it's a great

  351. thing to notice

  352. when you're reading

  353. our Bibles

  354. when things are repeated.

  355. It's not because

  356. the authors just ran

  357. out of things to say

  358. trying to fill words.

  359. It's repeated for emphasis.

  360. So do you see how

  361. it's repeated there twice?

  362. It's not just a lot

  363. of people,

  364. it's people who he

  365. has put around his life

  366. who are there

  367. to serve his pleasures

  368. and to satisfy

  369. his appetites.

  370. He surrounded himself

  371. with yes people.

  372. He surrounded himself

  373. with people who are there

  374. to satisfy him,

  375. to sing about his glory.

  376. Notice what is there

  377. because at some point

  378. during this feast,

  379. he calls for the vessels

  380. of gold to be brought out.

  381. Now this is interesting

  382. because these are

  383. the instruments

  384. that were devoted

  385. to the worship of Yahweh

  386. that were taken

  387. from the temple

  388. in Jerusalem.

  389. And make no mistake,

  390. if you look at verse 22

  391. in the text,

  392. and this backs it up,

  393. that Belshazzar

  394. knows exactly

  395. what he's doing

  396. when he calls on

  397. those vessels

  398. to be brought in

  399. so that they could be used

  400. for this drinking game.

  401. He knows exactly

  402. what he's doing.

  403. He knows what the history books

  404. say about what happened

  405. to his,

  406. I guess his father-in-law

  407. down the line,

  408. Nebuchadnezzar,

  409. and yet he's thinking

  410. to himself,

  411. that could never happen

  412. to me.

  413. Now one of the algorithms

  414. on my phone,

  415. do you not love

  416. those things?

  417. Because I watched

  418. a lot of footage

  419. of that sub

  420. that went down

  421. when they were going

  422. to visit the wreck

  423. of the Titanic.

  424. Now my Facebook feed

  425. is just all Titanic stats.

  426. Here's one

  427. that I learned recently.

  428. Do you want one?

  429. That apparently

  430. on the Titanic

  431. there were only

  432. 14 proper lifeboats

  433. on that ship.

  434. Coupled with a few

  435. emergency ones,

  436. a few collapsible ones,

  437. but that number

  438. is significant

  439. because it accounted

  440. for half of the people

  441. that were on board

  442. that ship.

  443. If you've seen that film

  444. and that was

  445. peak 90s,

  446. wasn't it?

  447. Rose mentions that fact.

  448. Only half of the people

  449. on this ship

  450. are going to survive

  451. because we've only got

  452. half the number

  453. of lifeboats

  454. that we should have had.

  455. And the call

  456. that they make

  457. when they're making

  458. that ship

  459. is that we prefer

  460. more space on deck

  461. than we would

  462. thinking about

  463. people's safety.

  464. Why do we do that?

  465. It all boiled down

  466. to what they called

  467. that ship.

  468. What did they call it?

  469. The unsinkable ship.

  470. Nothing's going

  471. to take us out.

  472. We are sailing

  473. from what, Liverpool?

  474. We're going to live

  475. in New York

  476. and we're going

  477. to do it ahead of time.

  478. And that epitomizes

  479. the defiant human spirit

  480. that thinks

  481. tomorrow

  482. is guaranteed.

  483. Belshazzar drinks

  484. from these.

  485. Do you see how he

  486. toasts his gods

  487. of gold, iron,

  488. wood, and stone.

  489. Make no mistake

  490. that he is using

  491. the vessels of God

  492. to worship his God.

  493. He is mocking

  494. the holiness

  495. of the living God.

  496. What he's doing

  497. is he toasts it.

  498. He toasts it.

  499. He is saying,

  500. I hold it.

  501. I own this God.

  502. And the God of the Bible

  503. will not be mocked,

  504. friends.

  505. And so if you're here today

  506. and that's your mindset,

  507. if you think

  508. you will get away

  509. with it

  510. because he can't see,

  511. know that he will

  512. have the last say

  513. on your life.

  514. Nothing escapes

  515. the gaze of this

  516. all-knowing,

  517. all-seeing God.

  518. And it is little wonder

  519. that verse 5

  520. roars in with that word

  521. you see it.

  522. immediately.

  523. Immediately.

  524. Belshazzar sees

  525. the writing

  526. on the wall.

  527. In case you're wondering

  528. where that phrase

  529. that we use

  530. all the time

  531. comes from.

  532. And the sham

  533. and the folly

  534. of what's going on here

  535. is exposed.

  536. The writer wants us

  537. to see straight

  538. through it.

  539. And he wants us

  540. to see straight

  541. through it.

  542. If you're struggling

  543. with this today,

  544. all the mockery

  545. that's going on,

  546. all the drinking games,

  547. all the success,

  548. all these things,

  549. the writer wants you

  550. to see straight

  551. through it as well.

  552. As this young buck

  553. who thinks he's

  554. on top of the world,

  555. who's taken on

  556. the king of the universe,

  557. he turns to jelly.

  558. And this is meant

  559. to make us laugh,

  560. I think,

  561. as the reader.

  562. You know,

  563. my friend Andy

  564. is the chaplain

  565. of Hearts

  566. men's football team.

  567. I remember him

  568. telling me that

  569. when it comes

  570. to his work

  571. as he gets in

  572. amongst the guys,

  573. he tells me,

  574. see when the team

  575. is flying,

  576. see when they're

  577. banging in the goals,

  578. no one wants to talk

  579. about the big questions

  580. of life.

  581. No one wants to think

  582. that this career

  583. might end one day.

  584. But he tells me,

  585. as soon as the team's

  586. form dips,

  587. and especially

  588. when a player

  589. gets a life-threatening

  590. injury,

  591. all of a sudden

  592. this confidence

  593. of this 25-year-old guy

  594. who thinks he owns

  595. the joint,

  596. all of a sudden

  597. he's scared

  598. that it's curtains

  599. for his career.

  600. And Jesus tells

  601. that parable,

  602. doesn't he?

  603. Of the rich farmer

  604. who sets about

  605. building bigger barns

  606. so that he can have

  607. more stuff,

  608. so that his life

  609. could be at ease.

  610. And he sits back

  611. in the deck chair,

  612. I imagine,

  613. in that parable,

  614. and that very night

  615. God says,

  616. you fool,

  617. that very night

  618. your life

  619. will be taken

  620. from you.

  621. And the joke

  622. in this passage,

  623. I think,

  624. is that the only adult

  625. in the room

  626. is the queen.

  627. Now she's not his wife,

  628. the queen is the queen mother

  629. you can understand

  630. her to be.

  631. So the joke

  632. in the text

  633. is this guy

  634. who's flexing his muscles,

  635. this young guy

  636. who thinks he owns

  637. the world,

  638. is granny

  639. who has to come

  640. to the rescue.

  641. Right?

  642. Granny has to come

  643. and she has to bring

  644. some common sense

  645. in the room.

  646. She's the only adult

  647. in the room.

  648. And she remembers

  649. this man,

  650. verse 11.

  651. And I think

  652. this is fascinating.

  653. Do you see in the text,

  654. I should have written it down,

  655. I ain't,

  656. verse 12.

  657. She doesn't use

  658. his Babylonian name.

  659. Do you see in the text

  660. she uses his Jewish name?

  661. There is this man

  662. called Daniel.

  663. That tells you tons,

  664. doesn't it?

  665. It tells you

  666. that Daniel

  667. has stuck rigidly

  668. to his God-given identity

  669. in Babylon.

  670. Even though tons

  671. of time has passed

  672. since that episode

  673. in chapter 4,

  674. Daniel is clinging

  675. to God's promises.

  676. This is who I am.

  677. Now let me ask you,

  678. in your circles,

  679. friends,

  680. all of our circles,

  681. how are we known?

  682. Not in terms of just

  683. what we do,

  684. but how are we known

  685. in terms of who we are?

  686. You know,

  687. I've told this story before,

  688. but I love it

  689. because he popped up

  690. on my Facebook feed

  691. this week,

  692. reminded me of him.

  693. See,

  694. when I was in halls

  695. at university,

  696. there was four Daves

  697. in our year.

  698. And what people did

  699. was just give people

  700. nicknames to differentiate

  701. them, right?

  702. So we had Disco Dave,

  703. we had Scary Dave,

  704. we had Hairy Dave,

  705. and then we had

  706. my friend

  707. who people called

  708. Christian Dave.

  709. All sorts of other

  710. adjectives they could have

  711. picked to describe him,

  712. but they went for that one

  713. because they saw

  714. what his life was all about.

  715. How are we known

  716. in our circles?

  717. These,

  718. this Queen Mum rather,

  719. she calls for Daniel.

  720. And in comes this,

  721. what comic scene

  722. this must have been,

  723. this near 80-year-old man

  724. man who's likely lost

  725. his physical edge,

  726. but boy,

  727. does he go toe-to-toe

  728. as he spars

  729. with this young man

  730. who thinks

  731. he owns

  732. the world.

  733. And Daniel goes

  734. to task

  735. here.

  736. And he exemplifies

  737. what God's people,

  738. I think,

  739. are meant to take

  740. from this.

  741. And this is the second,

  742. I think,

  743. an invitation

  744. that God

  745. makes to his people,

  746. and it's this,

  747. that if you're trusting

  748. his promises,

  749. dear friends,

  750. we are playing

  751. the long game.

  752. Daniel exemplifies

  753. for us

  754. what it means

  755. to trust

  756. God's sovereignty

  757. in the slow

  758. plod

  759. and often

  760. the mundane

  761. nature

  762. and the seeming

  763. silence

  764. of life.

  765. if tomorrow

  766. just feels

  767. like another

  768. day,

  769. and let me say

  770. with kids,

  771. it often

  772. does.

  773. You realise

  774. you're not that

  775. creative

  776. when you have

  777. to think

  778. of things

  779. to cook

  780. at night.

  781. Each day

  782. feels the same

  783. often.

  784. And yet,

  785. Daniel's been

  786. teaching me

  787. this week

  788. that I want

  789. to take

  790. every step

  791. of my life

  792. playing the long

  793. game

  794. with God's

  795. promises,

  796. promises,

  797. that I can

  798. glorify him

  799. as I change

  800. nappies,

  801. as we do

  802. all of that

  803. gig.

  804. I can glorify

  805. him.

  806. Because here's

  807. the question,

  808. right?

  809. What has Daniel

  810. been doing

  811. for the last

  812. 20 years?

  813. Chapter 6,

  814. if I can verse

  815. creep onto Archie's

  816. next week's

  817. chapter,

  818. he's not here

  819. so I'm going

  820. to do it,

  821. it gives us

  822. the answer.

  823. Daniel,

  824. as his influence

  825. in Babylon,

  826. wanes.

  827. Daniel,

  828. as his physical

  829. body in Babylon

  830. withers.

  831. He's not been

  832. topping up

  833. his tan,

  834. he's not been

  835. saving on the

  836. side for

  837. retirement,

  838. that sweet,

  839. sweet thought.

  840. This man has

  841. been getting

  842. down on his

  843. rickety knees

  844. and he's been

  845. praying three

  846. times a day,

  847. day after day

  848. after day.

  849. Here is a man

  850. who has been

  851. investing himself

  852. in the promises

  853. of God,

  854. getting scripted,

  855. into his system

  856. in the everyday

  857. nature of life

  858. because this

  859. confidence that he

  860. oozes here has

  861. not come out of

  862. nowhere.

  863. He's not all of a

  864. sudden just got his

  865. confidence thing to

  866. speak before the

  867. king.

  868. This is the result of

  869. a life of a man

  870. who has spent many,

  871. many,

  872. many years walking

  873. with his God,

  874. investing himself in

  875. the ordinary means

  876. of grace,

  877. or what I like to

  878. call holy habits.

  879. Getting up each

  880. day,

  881. reading his Bible,

  882. praying,

  883. getting up the next

  884. day,

  885. reading his Bible

  886. and praying.

  887. And we were

  888. thinking as an

  889. elders team yesterday

  890. about how we can

  891. create that culture,

  892. continue to do it

  893. in this church here.

  894. Let me ask you,

  895. friends,

  896. all of us,

  897. what are we doing

  898. to create those

  899. holy habits?

  900. What is our

  901. exposure to God's

  902. words like?

  903. Maybe some of us

  904. off the back of

  905. today,

  906. just resolutely

  907. determined to just

  908. even spend five,

  909. ten,

  910. fifty minutes each

  911. day just reading

  912. God's word,

  913. getting his promises

  914. for the long game

  915. into our system.

  916. Daniel is a

  917. wonderful example

  918. here of what Paul

  919. in 2 Corinthians 4

  920. talks about,

  921. about how the

  922. outer man is

  923. fading away but

  924. the inner man is

  925. being renewed day

  926. after day after day

  927. as he looks not to

  928. that which is seen

  929. but as he looks to

  930. that which is unseen.

  931. Can I maybe just

  932. make a really

  933. specific application

  934. to those of us

  935. in the room?

  936. He's looking very

  937. much at his notes

  938. who are at the

  939. Daniel age and

  940. stage of life.

  941. You know,

  942. one of the comedy

  943. programs that was

  944. popular on British

  945. TV when I was

  946. growing up,

  947. I would ask for

  948. showing the hands

  949. in the air but

  950. let's not do that,

  951. okay,

  952. it was called

  953. One Foot in the

  954. Grave.

  955. The central

  956. character to One

  957. Foot in the Grave

  958. is this man

  959. called Victor

  960. Meldrew,

  961. right?

  962. YouTube's your

  963. friend if you

  964. don't know what

  965. this is and he

  966. had this line all

  967. the time,

  968. I don't believe

  969. it and he's just

  970. moaning and he's

  971. grumping about the

  972. things of life and

  973. the reason that

  974. these shows connect

  975. with us,

  976. is it not true

  977. that we see

  978. ourselves in these

  979. shows?

  980. I take it that's

  981. why observational

  982. comedy is a massive

  983. thing in our

  984. culture because

  985. people just look,

  986. they perceive and

  987. they make fun.

  988. Is it not generally

  989. speaking true,

  990. dear friends,

  991. that people in our

  992. culture getting

  993. older often makes

  994. them more cynical

  995. about life?

  996. We didn't do that

  997. in my day.

  998. Cannot believe what

  999. we're doing in this

  1000. day.

  1001. And so often it's

  1002. tied up with the

  1003. fact that people

  1004. are struggling to

  1005. come to terms with

  1006. the fact that their

1007. best days are not in

  1008. front of them.

  1009. Their best days are

  1010. behind them.

1011. If you are a seasoned

  1012. saint here this

  1013. morning, never lose

1014. sight of the fact that

  1015. the promises of God

  1016. tell you that your

  1017. best days are ahead

  1018. of you.

1019. They are ahead of you.

  1020. show it to your

  1021. neighbours and your

  1022. family.

1023. Show it to those who

  1024. live in your stairwell,

1025. who you live in your

  1026. flat, in your home.

  1027. Show it to us.

1028. I need you to help me

  1029. remember that the

  1030. greatest days of our

  1031. lives are not mid-twenties.

1032. It's when we be with

  1033. the living God.

  1034. I love Daniel.

1035. I love him and this is

1036. why he's taught me so

  1037. much this week.

1038. He is playing the long

  1039. game with the promises

  1040. of God.

  1041. I think in our

  1042. culture today, friends,

  1043. we are conditioned to

  1044. play the short game.

  1045. Everything's instant.

  1046. Everything's now.

1047. Trying to explain to my

  1048. kids that Gladiators is

  1049. live TV.

1050. You can't just watch the

  1051. next one.

  1052. Everything's now.

  1053. Everything's instant.

1054. And how quickly we tap

  1055. out.

1056. At the stage of life now

1057. where I love the verbs

  1058. to describe the Christian

1059. life, ones that speak to

1060. me so much at this

  1061. moment,

  1062. patience and endurance

  1063. and long-suffering.

  1064. In other words,

  1065. play the long game.

1066. Daniel has found and is

1067. living for a far greater

  1068. treasure.

  1069. I take it that's why he

  1070. says, Belshazzar, just

  1071. keep your stuff.

  1072. But before he interprets

1073. the dream, do you see

  1074. how he explains the

  1075. dream?

1076. You need to learn the

  1077. lessons that Nebuchadnezzar,

  1078. before you did Belshazzar,

1079. this God who gave him,

1080. and this God who took

  1081. from him,

1082. is meant to help us

  1083. realize, verse 21,

1084. that the Most High God

  1085. rules.

1086. And you are making that

  1087. exact same mistake.

  1088. Many, many, numbered.

  1089. Tekel, Wade,

  1090. Parsin,

  1091. divided.

  1092. And it's interesting,

  1093. isn't it,

  1094. the reaction that he

  1095. makes, Belshazzar,

  1096. to this is really

  1097. strange.

1098. It's not the one that we

  1099. think he should make,

1100. maybe the one that we

  1101. expect him to make,

1102. but it tells us all about

1103. this guy and how he

  1104. thinks.

  1105. Instead of repenting,

1106. what does he want to do?

  1107. Like some kind of

  1108. corporate away gig.

1109. He just wants to shower

  1110. him and stuff.

  1111. He thinks,

  1112. I imagine still,

1113. this stuff is going to

  1114. save him.

1115. And then have a look

1116. at verse 30 as we

1117. begin to wind this up

  1118. this morning.

  1119. This is what history

  1120. tells us.

  1121. And again,

  1122. remember,

  1123. this is why we've

  1124. always gone to the

  1125. kind of historical

  1126. accuracy of this book

  1127. to help us understand.

1128. This is not a fairy tale.

  1129. This actually happened.

  1130. Look at verse 30.

  1131. Here's what history

  1132. tells us.

1133. It tells us that the

  1134. Medes and the Persians,

  1135. and I love this.

1136. If you ever look to

  1137. take a city,

  1138. go with this.

1139. The Medes and the Persians

  1140. in history,

  1141. they divert the

  1142. Euphrates River.

  1143. And why,

  1144. if they divert it,

1145. what they do is they

  1146. cause the water level

  1147. to drop.

  1148. And they sneak in

  1149. through the sewers

  1150. of the city.

  1151. And that's how

  1152. they capture Babylon.

  1153. Which means at this

  1154. point,

  1155. when he is toasting

  1156. his success

  1157. and his glory,

1158. it may well be the

  1159. case that the Medes

  1160. and the Persians

  1161. are ready to pounce.

  1162. They're right

  1163. underneath the city.

  1164. Belshazzar is killed

1165. as they rout the place.

  1166. And Darius the Medes,

1167. and notice the key words,

  1168. the ESV I think

  1169. captures it better

  1170. than the NIV,

1171. but I think you roll

  1172. with the punches

1173. and you see it still.

  1174. Here's the key word.

  1175. What did he do?

1176. He didn't win the kingdom.

  1177. He received the kingdom.

  1178. There's a lot of dynamite

  1179. in that one verse.

1180. Let me just pick out

  1181. just a couple of

  1182. really quick ones.

  1183. Because he's received

  1184. the kingdom,

  1185. it means that there's

  1186. a new superpower

  1187. on the world stage.

  1188. Remember we said

  1189. chapter one,

1190. this is like a big game

  1191. of risk,

  1192. world domination.

  1193. So there's a new

  1194. superpower

  1195. have just been crowned

  1196. at this point.

  1197. Crucially,

  1198. it's the one that

  1199. God had said

  1200. that he would use

  1201. to make a way

  1202. for his people

  1203. to go back

  1204. to their homeland.

1205. So this is a big moment

  1206. in biblical history.

  1207. It's one verse,

  1208. massive moment.

  1209. And yet,

  1210. we need to understand

  1211. that Darius

  1212. receives the kingdom.

  1213. God gives him

  1214. the kingdom.

  1215. But kings and kingdoms

1216. will just come and go.

  1217. We'll see this

1218. in the weeks to come.

  1219. Kings and kingdoms

  1220. will just keep

  1221. spinning round.

  1222. And yet,

  1223. with every single one,

  1224. this Belshazzar spirit

  1225. will live on.

  1226. So we're right back

  1227. to that original question.

1228. Is there all this stuff

  1229. about breath?

  1230. Is it true

  1231. when I don't see it

  1232. round about me?

  1233. Is God still sovereign?

  1234. Is he reigning

  1235. on the throne

  1236. on his purposes,

  1237. ripening fast

  1238. every hour?

  1239. In the words of

  1240. William Cowper,

  1241. even when all around

  1242. I see,

  1243. is the Belshazzar spirit

  1244. alive and kicking?

  1245. What do we do?

  1246. How do we live?

  1247. I take it that

  1248. we are privileged

  1249. to live this side

  1250. of the cross.

  1251. And this calls us

  1252. to consider

  1253. and draw confidence

  1254. from,

  1255. friends,

  1256. another king

  1257. who received

  1258. a kingdom.

  1259. And you cannot help

  1260. but contrast

  1261. King Belshazzar

  1262. with King Jesus

  1263. in this episode,

  1264. can you?

  1265. Belshazzar,

1266. he drinks from a cup

1267. raised to his own glory.

  1268. But Jesus drank

  1269. from a cup,

  1270. one that symbolized

  1271. our sin

  1272. and rebellion

  1273. against this God

  1274. who gives us breath

  1275. and he drank

  1276. the dregs

  1277. of that cup dry

  1278. as he paid

  1279. the price

  1280. of our sin

  1281. on the cross.

  1282. Completely contrasting

  1283. kings and kingdoms.

  1284. And God declared

  1285. of Belshazzar,

  1286. numbered,

  1287. numbered,

  1288. tried in one thing,

  1289. but God the Father

  1290. declares of his Son,

  1291. because he went

  1292. to the cross

  1293. to accomplish

  1294. the plan of salvation,

  1295. hatched before

  1296. the foundation of world

  1297. to his Father's glory.

  1298. God declared of Jesus,

  1299. this is my Son

  1300. with whom I am

  1301. well pleased.

  1302. Contrasting kings

  1303. and kingdoms.

  1304. And this King Jesus

  1305. we need to understand.

  1306. Our King

  1307. has received,

  1308. as we were singing

  1309. at the start

  1310. and what a pick

  1311. that song was,

  1312. he has received

  1313. an unshakable kingdom.

  1314. kingdom.

  1315. And this Christ,

  1316. he loves us

  1317. and he holds

  1318. history

  1319. and he holds

  1320. our breaths

  1321. in his hand.

  1322. And by faith

  1323. in King Jesus,

  1324. friends,

  1325. we have received

  1326. a kingdom

  1327. that will never

  1328. be toppled

  1329. or shaken.

  1330. And one day

  1331. all of creation

  1332. will need to answer

  1333. to this king.

1334. So what should we do?

  1335. Let's just close

  1336. with this thought.

  1337. You know,

  1338. our youngest daughter,

  1339. she's going through

  1340. a bit of a frozen spell

  1341. at the moment.

  1342. I've kind of coined

  1343. the phrase,

  1344. I call her a fraudler.

  1345. Okay?

  1346. And I hear her

  1347. the other morning

  1348. on her baby monitor

  1349. singing,

  1350. let it go,

  1351. let it go.

  1352. I don't think she gets

1353. the rest of the song

  1354. but those three words

  1355. she has nailed.

  1356. Let it go,

  1357. let it go.

1358. Trying to branch her out

  1359. into Frozen 2

  1360. because I'm getting a bit

  1361. sick of the repetitive

  1362. nature of it.

  1363. If you've seen Frozen 2,

1364. one of the hit songs

  1365. of that film

  1366. that Anna sings

  1367. is called

  1368. The Next Right Thing.

  1369. The Next Right Thing.

1370. All she sees around her

  1371. is darkness

  1372. in that scene.

  1373. She doesn't know

  1374. what's up ahead

  1375. but she's just doing

  1376. the next right thing.

  1377. And that's what Daniel 5

  1378. I think calls

  1379. God's people to do.

  1380. When we see darkness

  1381. around,

  1382. when we don't know

  1383. what's up ahead,

  1384. God just calls us

  1385. to trust him,

  1386. to know his promises

  1387. and do the next

  1388. right thing.

1389. What's that going to look like

  1390. for you tomorrow

  1391. in the office?

1392. What's that going to look like

  1393. for you tomorrow

1394. as you look after your kids?

1395. What's that going to look like

  1396. tomorrow

  1397. when you meet up

  1398. with your friends

  1399. and family?

  1400. Doing the next

  1401. right thing.

  1402. Trusting him

  1403. for the long haul,

  1404. being obedient

  1405. to his words.

1406. I take it this is what

  1407. Eugene Peterson called

  1408. a long obedience

  1409. in the same direction.

  1410. Just do the next

  1411. right thing.

1412. Here's what we can know.

  1413. When we do that,

1414. when we walk by faith

  1415. with this vision

  1416. of this glorious Christ

  1417. in our minds

  1418. and in our hearts,

1419. when we walk by faith

  1420. rather than sight

  1421. in our circumstances,

  1422. friends,

  1423. we are standing

  1424. in a long

  1425. and beautiful tradition.

  1426. And be

  1427. so aware

  1428. that as the clock

  1429. ticks over

  1430. mundanely,

  1431. he is working out

  1432. his purposes

  1433. perfectly.

  1434. And let's close

  1435. with this.

  1436. This is

  1437. Jen Wilkin

  1438. who is doing

  1439. some fantastic

  1440. work

  1441. in women's ministry

  1442. heading it up

  1443. in the States.

  1444. She writes this

  1445. in her book

  1446. In His Image.

  1447. If you're looking

  1448. for something

  1449. just devotionally

  1450. to mix it up,

  1451. that's a book

  1452. to get.

  1453. She just writes this,

  1454. the church must be

  1455. a bastion of patience

  1456. as the rest

  1457. of the world

  1458. chases the next

  1459. new thing

  1460. every eight seconds

  1461. or less.

  1462. Eight seconds

  1463. means that we have

  1464. a less attention span

  1465. than a goldfish

  1466. if you're needing

  1467. humbled this morning.

  1468. we must be those

  1469. who turn our eyes

  1470. toward the long view.

  1471. Amen.

  1472. Amen.
