  1. Thanks very much, Casey and Steph, and good morning, everyone.

  2. If you have your Bible open, please keep it open.

  3. If you don't have an open Bible, you might well find it helpful as we go through,

  4. because we haven't read the whole passage, but I will refer to quite a lot of it as we go.

  5. Welcome to General Election Week.

  6. It feels a bit momentous, doesn't it?

  7. If the polls are even vaguely accurate,

  8. we're likely to have only the third change of governing party in the last 45 years,

  9. and that feels, in many ways, quite a big deal.

  10. Or at least it did until this week I was reading Daniel chapter 11.

    Daniel 11 chapter mention

  11. And Daniel 11 is looking not just at a period of decades, but at a period of centuries.

  12. And he's giving very much the message that kingdoms will rise and kingdoms will fall,

  13. rulers will become powerful, and then they'll be defeated.

  14. But at the end of everything, what really matters is that God is in control.

  15. I think Maggie said God will win, and that is absolutely right.

  16. So as we come to a General Election Week, let's have confidence in our God.

  17. Whatever happens, our God is in control,

  18. and ultimately our God will be seen to be the God of gods.

  19. There was something else to do with the General Election that came to me

  20. as I was looking at these passages this week.

  21. And that is how we get our information and our understanding.

  22. And I think it comes essentially in three ways,

  23. which I think are relevant as we look at this section of Daniel.

  24. Some information we get about the election is straightforward,

  25. relatively easy to understand.

  26. It's in the interest of the political parties to have slogans

  27. that come across as simple and straightforward,

  28. and people can say, yes, I identify with them.

  29. So in this election, the Conservative Party is promising it will cut our taxes.

  30. Labour Party is promising it will grow the economy.

  31. And the Liberal Democrats are promising that they'll sort out social care.

  32. Simple messages that we probably can understand,

  33. at least at a high level, without anyone explaining them to us.

  34. I think there's that in these chapters in Daniel.

  35. Now, they are long and they're complicated.

  36. But if you were to read through them and try to make sense of them,

  37. I think you would get some key messages.

  38. And they might look something like this.

  39. Chapter 10 has material about conflict in the heavens.

  40. Now, it gets complicated, but we can understand there's something in there

  41. about conflict in the heavens.

  42. Chapter 11 is about chaos on the earth.

  43. All these rulers who come and go,

  44. and there's lots of detail in there which we'll come back to.

  45. But the message is there's lots happening in our world.

  46. Everything is temporary.

  47. No ruler is forever because only God is eternal.

  48. No.

  49. And that then brings us to chapter 12,

  50. which gives comfort for God's people.

  51. And it says,

  52. despite all the troubles that we see in our world,

  53. and Daniel saw plenty as this message was given to him.

  54. Despite all that, it will come right in the end.

  55. The dead in Christ will be raised,

  56. as Paul says, and is foreshadowed here.

  57. And overarching it all is the message that's overarching the whole book of Daniel.

  58. God is in control.

  59. God is the person who is ultimately in control of our world.

  60. And if we trust him, we can have total confidence in him.

  61. So at a high level, then, we have some understanding of what's in the chapters.

  62. Going back to the election,

  63. there is also quite a lot of information that comes at us

  64. that we might find quite difficult to understand

  65. until someone explains it.

  66. So, for example,

  67. the SNP is lobbying for taxes to be increased in England.

  68. And you might say,

  69. well, what business is that of the SNP?

  70. Well, the reason they're doing it

  71. is that if taxes are raised in England

  72. and the money goes to fund the English NHS,

  73. then Scotland will benefit from Barnet consequentials.

  74. Some of you may understand what that means.

  75. Some of you probably don't.

  76. I suspect none of us would

  77. unless someone had explained it to us

  78. or we'd read about it.

  79. But it's factual information.

  80. The Barnet formula is something you can find

  81. and you can understand.

  82. You don't really have any controversy

  83. about what it is.

  84. And so when we come to these chapters in Daniel,

  85. there are some things that we wouldn't understand

  86. if we just read it.

  87. So most of chapter 11,

  88. it's a long series of events that are prophesied.

  89. And we very quickly, I think, get lost

  90. as we read through them.

  91. But if you have a good commentary or a study Bible

  92. and you read that,

  93. the commentary alongside Daniel 11,

  94. it will explain to you exactly

  95. how Daniel 11 was fulfilled in history.

  96. It is a remarkably accurate account

  97. of what was at the time of Daniel in the future.

  98. And everyone, all the experts agree

  99. on the main details of that.

  100. Doesn't matter who you ask,

  101. they will agree about it.

  102. There's then a third level of information understanding

  103. to do with the general election.

  104. And that's areas where the experts

  105. don't necessarily agree.

  106. So all the parties are making promises.

  107. They're all saying we're fully costed.

  108. And some of the experts are saying,

  109. actually, you haven't taken account of this

  110. or this is a bit of a dodgy assumption.

  111. And the experts may not necessarily agree

  112. on what's what.

  113. And that is one of the difficulties,

  114. I guess, for us as voters.

  115. We're given information.

  116. Some of it we can understand easily.

  117. Some of it we can understand with a bit of effort.

  118. But some of it we're going to just have to decide

  119. who we trust,

  120. which of the experts we think

  121. has potentially got it right.

  122. And that's the third element

  123. we find in these chapters.

  124. Graham highlighted it last week

  125. that there are all sorts of views

  126. of the prophecies that are made

  127. in the book of Daniel

  128. and the visions that he had.

  129. If you were listening to Graham last week

  130. and you listened to me today,

  131. you probably will see reasonably clearly

  132. that we don't agree

  133. in our understanding of some of the details.

  134. And that's fine.

  135. And we're not going to fall out over it.

  136. It's difficult stuff

  137. that people won't always see the same way.

  138. But where Graham and I definitely do agree

  139. is that while the detail is important,

  140. the really critical things are the big picture.

  141. The big picture that God is in control of our world

  142. and that he will bring about his purposes in the future.

  143. And that's not up for debate.

  144. That is not disagreed on

  145. by those who hold to the truth of the Bible.

  146. God is in control.

  147. There's conflict in the heavens we'll think about.

  148. There's lots of chaos on earth,

  149. lots of things on earth we don't understand

  150. and we probably are quite distressed about.

  151. But God is in control.

  152. We can take comfort from that

  153. and from the fact that Jesus is coming again.

  154. Kingdoms will rise and fall.

  155. Evil beings will do their worst.

  156. But there's a glorious future

  157. for those who trust in God.

  158. Now, with that by way of introduction,

  159. let's have a look at the passages.

  160. And we're only going to be able to go over

  161. very superficially this morning.

  162. There's a lot of detail here we won't cover.

  163. We'll try to get the main messages out of it.

  164. So at the beginning of chapter 10,

  165. Daniel positions for us the time of what's happening.

  166. This is quite significant.

  167. He says,

  168. In the third year of Cyrus, king of Persia.

  169. Now, in terms of the timing of Daniel,

  170. this means it is the last thing that happens

  171. in the book of Daniel chronologically

  172. as well as in the flow of the book.

  173. It is sometime after Daniel was put into the lion's den.

  174. He's an old man.

  175. He's probably in his mid-80s at this point.

  176. What's also significant about the timing

  177. is that when Cyrus became the king,

  178. when the Medes and Persians conquered Babylon,

  179. that set in train a return of the Jews

  180. back to Jerusalem.

  181. We read about it in the book of Ezra

  182. in the early chapters,

  183. how Cyrus decreed that the Jews

  184. were going to be able to go back to Jerusalem

  185. and to rebuild the temple.

  186. Archie, a few weeks ago, looking at chapter 6,

  187. talked about the yearning for home

  188. that the Jews had.

  189. And that yearning for home

  190. seemed to be being realised

  191. as some of Daniel's compatriots

  192. went back to Judea.

  193. But then they had problems.

  194. There was opposition

  195. and the work stalled.

  196. It stopped.

  197. And it may be that the point we're at now

  198. is where Daniel heard about

  199. the difficulties in Jerusalem.

  200. Heard about the fact that the thing

  201. which undoubtedly caused him great joy

  202. that his people were able to return

  203. actually seemed to be going wrong.

  204. And perhaps that is the background

  205. behind the whole of this section.

  206. It is God coming to Daniel

  207. and saying,

  208. yes, it looks as if things are going wrong,

  209. but don't worry,

  210. I am in control.

  211. Whether that's the right interpretation or not,

  212. as we look at the beginning of this passage,

  213. Daniel is in mourning.

  214. In verses 2 and 3,

  215. he says he mourned for three weeks,

  216. he went on a very restricted diet,

  217. and he didn't use ointment in the heat

  218. to make things a bit more comfortable.

  219. He was also, as always,

  220. engaged in prayer,

  221. and it looks as if he was particularly

  222. asking for understanding from God.

  223. Perhaps I say understanding

  224. for why things seem to have gone wrong

  225. in Jerusalem.

  226. And as he's doing that,

  227. he has a vision.

  228. He sees a man dressed in linen.

  229. The man has a gold belt on.

  230. He has quite startling features

  231. that we read about in chapter 10.

  232. He has a voice that is thunderous.

  233. And as Daniel hears it,

  234. he falls down to the ground.

  235. He appears to go into a deep faint.

  236. The people who are with him

  237. don't see the vision,

  238. but they're terrified

  239. and they run away.

  240. There's a question then,

  241. well, who is it that Daniel sees

  242. in the vision?

  243. What is the vision

  244. that Daniel sees?

  245. So we note

  246. that there are striking similarities

  247. between the description here

  248. of the man Daniel sees

  249. and the description of Jesus

  250. in Revelation chapter 1

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  251. when John sees him

  252. in a vision there.

  253. The white robes,

  254. the belt,

  255. the striking features,

  256. the sound of his voice,

  257. and the fact that in Revelation

  258. John falls at his feet

  259. as if dead

  260. and Daniel here also

  261. falls to the ground.

  262. So it's possible

  263. this could be an appearance

  264. of the Lord Jesus

  265. before his incarnation.

  266. Several points in the Old Testament

  267. where that's a possibility,

  268. I think it is here.

  269. So John falls into this deep faint.

  270. He falls asleep

  271. and he's wakened

  272. by a hand touching him.

  273. And he's then given

  274. a message by this person

  275. which again is quite disturbing.

  276. So who is it that's talking

  277. to Daniel here?

  278. Well, you might naturally think

  279. it's the same person

  280. as in the earlier verses

  281. and it might be.

  282. But it's noticeable

  283. as we read these verses

  284. that the person

  285. who's speaking to Daniel

  286. talks about how he needed help

  287. from Michael.

  288. Michael, one of the leaders

  289. of the angel,

  290. the archangel Michael,

  291. whoever it was,

  292. needed help from Daniel

  293. to overcome a spiritual being.

  294. And that doesn't tie in,

  295. does it,

  296. with it being the Lord Jesus,

  297. the God incarnate,

  298. the one who is all-powerful.

  299. So it may well be

  300. the person we're looking at here

  301. is not the Lord Jesus

  302. but is an angel

  303. come to bring the message

  304. to Daniel.

  305. So possibly we're looking

  306. at two separate people.

  307. The one the Lord Jesus

  308. in the earlier verses,

  309. the other an angel

  310. in the later verses

  311. and in support of that

  312. the earlier verses

  313. clearly talk about a vision.

  314. The later verses

  315. clearly are quite physical

  316. because the person

  317. touches Daniel three times

  318. and so does someone

  319. who is physically there with them.

  320. I'll leave that tentatively with you

  321. if you're so inclined

  322. you can go away

  323. and have a think about it.

  324. But the purpose of the messenger

  325. is to reassure Daniel.

  326. And he does it by the way

  327. he touches him

  328. and gives him back his strength.

  329. He also does it by twice

  330. calling him highly esteemed.

  331. So Daniel very quickly learns

  332. this isn't someone

  333. who's come to judge him

  334. or to condemn him.

  335. It's someone who's come

  336. to encourage

  337. and to raise him up.

  338. But the message

  339. that the angel of it is that gives

  340. is actually very difficult

  341. because it's a message

  342. about a battle in the heavens

  343. a conflict in the heavens.

  344. The angel talks about the fact

  345. that when Daniel started praying

  346. 21 days ago

  347. he wanted to come

  348. and to reassure him then

  349. but he was held up

  350. by the king of Persia.

  351. He later talks about

  352. the king of Greece.

  353. And this brings us

  354. into territory

  355. I think most of us

  356. are fairly uncomfortable about

  357. if we think about it at all.

  358. That there are heavenly beings

  359. who have a real interest

  360. in this world.

  361. Spiritual powers

  362. both good and evil.

  363. Here it is at the level

  364. of nations.

  365. It is kind of patron angels

  366. if you like

  367. influencing what happens

  368. in the nations

  369. of our world.

  370. It's also true

  371. that the Bible would teach

  372. that there are spiritual powers

  373. taking an interest

  374. in us individually.

  375. Maybe the most influential book

  376. on this

  377. in making people aware

  378. of spiritual powers

  379. was C.S. Lewis'

  380. Screwtape Letters.

  381. Quite old now

  382. but many of you I'm sure

  383. have come across it.

  384. Screwtape Letters

  385. are a series of letters

  386. from a senior demon

  387. to a junior tempter

  388. about their work

  389. in the life of someone

  390. who's just called

  391. the patient.

  392. They're trying to

  393. divert this person

  394. away from God

  395. and to tempt him

  396. in all sorts of ways.

  397. Now it's a work of fiction.

  398. We're not to take

  399. what C.S. Lewis writes literally

  400. but he is trying both

  401. to help us

  402. to understand

  403. the subtlety

  404. of much of the temptation

  405. we face

  406. and to bring us

  407. to a realisation

  408. of the existence

  409. of spiritual beings.

  410. He says this

  411. in his introduction.

  412. There are two equal

  413. and opposite errors

  414. into which our race

  415. can fall about the devils.

  416. One is to disbelieve

  417. in their existence.

  418. The other is to believe

  419. and to feel an excessive

  420. and unhealthy interest

  421. in them.

  422. They themselves

  423. are equally pleased

  424. by both errors.

  425. So on the one hand

  426. we have a lot of people

  427. who would find this

  428. too difficult teaching

  429. to understand

  430. and say no,

  431. can't believe that.

  432. And then we have

  433. a rather smaller group

  434. of people

  435. who take an excessive

  436. interest in demonic activity

  437. and to become

  438. really obsessed

  439. as they think about it.

  440. C.S. Lewis says

  441. both errors are wrong.

  442. We need to take

  443. a balanced view of this

  444. to understand

  445. that there are

  446. powers out there

  447. that we don't

  448. understand fully.

  449. but not to become

  450. so caught up with them

  451. that we lose focus

  452. on the main thing

  453. which is our relationship

  454. with the Lord Jesus.

  455. Paul covers this

  456. in Ephesians.

  457. He says,

  458. our struggle

  459. is not

  460. against fresh and blood

  461. but against the rulers,

  462. against the authorities,

  463. against,

  464. sorry,

  465. I'm struggling to read up there,

  466. I'll read back here,

  467. against the powers

  468. of this dark world

  469. and against the spiritual

  470. forces of evil

  471. in the heavenly realms.

  472. And he then goes on

  473. to encourage us

  474. to put on

  475. the full armour of God

  476. so that when the day comes

  477. we'll be able

  478. to stand our ground

  479. and after doing

  480. everything

  481. to stand.

  482. Paul's advice there

  483. is very important.

  484. We need to be aware

  485. that there are

  486. evil forces

  487. out there.

  488. But we also need

  489. to know

  490. that the way

  491. to combat them

  492. is not by becoming

  493. excessively interested

  494. in them

  495. but to put on

  496. ourselves

  497. the armour

  498. of God.

  499. Truth,

  500. righteousness,

  501. gospel readiness,

  502. faith,

  503. salvation,

  504. God's word.

  505. And alongside that,

  506. Paul says,

  507. to support one another

  508. in prayer.

  509. We are all engaged

  510. in a spiritual battle.

  511. We all face temptations

  512. in our lives.

  513. It's important

  514. that we individually

  515. put on the armour

  516. that Paul talks about

  517. and that we collectively

  518. pray for one another

  519. and recognise

  520. we are all

  521. in that battle.

  522. We're not able

  523. to triumph by ourselves.

  524. We need to be much

  525. in prayer for one another

  526. that God

  527. will support us

  528. in it.

  529. There's lots more

  530. we could say about that.

  531. We haven't got time

  532. this morning

  533. but I hope

  534. that is some help.

  535. Let's move on

  536. to chapter 11.

  537. Chapter 11 is very long

  538. and as I said

  539. it is very complicated.

  540. The messenger here

  541. is looking

  542. into the future

  543. and he's making

  544. prophecies.

  545. We're not going

  546. to go through it

  547. in great detail.

  548. I'll summarise

  549. the passage for you

  550. but let me just make

  551. two general comments

  552. first.

  553. The first thing is

  554. as I've said

  555. this is a very

  556. accurate prophecy.

  557. What we read

  558. about here

  559. which was given

  560. to Daniel

  561. is in the future

  562. then

  563. but we can look

  564. back now

  565. if we have

  566. the historic

  567. information

  568. and we can see

  569. that almost

  570. all of it

  571. until we get

  572. right to the end

  573. almost all of it

  574. has been fulfilled

  575. very accurately

  576. in history.

  577. So much so

  578. that it's quite

  579. often suggested

  580. well this must

  581. have been written

  582. after the event

  583. it is so accurate.

  584. I don't believe

  585. that's the case.

  586. Our God knows

  587. the future

  588. as well as the past

  589. and he is well

  590. able to bring

  591. this kind of

  592. prophecy to us.

  593. But we have here

  594. a very accurate

  595. account of what

  596. happened historically.

  597. But then the second

  598. point is that

  599. this is not just

  600. a history lesson

  601. for us.

  602. Some people would

  603. find it really

  604. interesting perhaps

  605. some people would

  606. find it deadly

  607. boring to go

  608. through the history.

  609. But that's not

  610. the purpose of what

  611. the messenger

  612. is saying here.

  613. The purpose is

  614. to give Daniel

  615. and those who

  616. would follow him

  617. confidence in God.

  618. That God does

  619. know the end

  620. from the beginning.

  621. That what happens

  622. will be as God

  623. allows it.

  624. And then as we

  625. get into chapter 12

  626. that ultimately

  627. God will be

  628. triumphant

  629. and his people

  630. will be vindicated.

  631. And I suspect

  632. that people over

  633. the few hundred

  634. years after Daniel

  635. as they were

  636. facing oppression

  637. from all sides

  638. as Israel was

  639. constantly under

  640. pressure

  641. they would be

  642. able to look

  643. at these prophecies

  644. here.

  645. And they could

  646. say yes

  647. we look in the

  648. past and we

  649. see these

  650. have been

  651. fulfilled

  652. perfectly

  653. by God.

  654. And so we

  655. can have

  656. confidence in

  657. the future

  658. that things

  659. will happen

  660. as God

  661. has decreed

  662. it.

  663. So let's

  664. just very

  665. briefly talk

  666. through the

  667. chapter.

  668. The detail

  669. is interesting

  670. for some

  671. but it's

  672. possibly less

  673. important than

  674. the big picture.

  675. So the bit

  676. that we read

  677. at the beginning

  678. begins with

  679. Cyrus who

  680. was the king

  681. of Persia

  682. at that time

  683. and then

  684. says there

  685. will be

  686. four kings

  687. that will

  688. follow him

  689. over a

  690. period of

  691. about 200

  692. years.

  693. The fourth

  694. of these kings

  695. is the one

  696. who is going

  697. to be richest

  698. and most

  699. influential

  700. and that's

  701. generally

  702. identified as

  703. Xerxes.

  704. Xerxes you

  705. may remember

  706. as the king

  707. in the book

  708. of Esther

  709. that Esther

  710. and Mordecai

  711. have dealings

  712. with.

  713. He wasn't

  714. the last

  715. king of

  716. Persia

  717. but it

  718. was the

  719. time of

  720. Xerxes

  721. that the

  722. influence

  723. and power

  724. of the

  725. Persian

  726. empire

  727. started to

  728. wane.

  729. Xerxes

  730. went to

  731. war against

  732. Greece

  733. and he

  734. was soundly

  735. defeated

  736. at the

  737. battle of

  738. Salamis

  739. and the

  740. decline

  741. of the

  742. Persian

  743. empire

  744. can

  745. probably

  746. be

  747. dated

  748. from

  749. that.

  750. We

  751. then have

  752. in verse

  753. three

  754. we have

  755. a mighty

  756. king

  757. who will

  758. arise

  759. and that

  760. king is

  761. Alexander

  762. the Great.

  763. The king

  764. who in

  765. the early

  766. 30s

  767. looked around

  768. him and

  769. wept as

  770. he said

  771. there are

  772. no more

  773. worlds for

  774. me to

  775. conquer.

  776. An

  777. enormously

  778. successful

  779. leader

  780. and general

  781. who then

  782. died at

  783. the age

  784. of just

  785. 32.

  786. When

  787. Alexander

  788. died after

  789. a little

  790. bit of

  791. infighting

  792. his

  793. kingdom

  794. was

  795. essentially

  796. divided

  797. into

  798. four.

  799. Four

  800. different

  801. areas

  802. which

  803. are

  804. represented

  805. by

  806. the

  807. points

  808. of

  809. the

  810. compass.

  811. Now

  812. the

  813. key

  814. kingdoms

  815. that

  816. are

  817. referred

  818. to

  819. in

  820. this

  821. passage

  822. are

  823. what

  824. are

  825. called

  826. the

  827. king

  828. of

  829. the

  830. north

  831. and

  832. the

  833. king

  834. of

  835. the

  836. south.

  837. The

  838. king

  839. of

  840. the

  841. north

  842. is

  843. Syria.

  844. It

  845. is

  846. the

  847. Seleucian

  848. empire

  849. in

  850. Syria.

  851. The

  852. king

  853. of

  854. the

  855. south

  856. is

  857. Egypt.

  858. It

  859. is

  860. the

  861. Ptolemaean

  862. empire.

  863. And

  864. these

  865. two

  866. empires

  867. for a

  868. long

  869. period

  870. were in

  871. battle

  872. with

  873. each

  874. other

  875. for

  876. control

  877. of

  878. that

  879. area

  880. of

  881. the

  882. world.

  883. And

  884. you can

  885. if you're

  886. so

  887. inclined

  888. read

  889. through

  890. from

  891. verse 4

  892. to

  893. verse 20

  894. and if

  895. you've

  896. got a

  897. comment

  898. you can

  899. see the

  900. historical

  901. side

  902. of

  903. that.

  904. But

  905. there's

  906. a lot

  907. of

  908. plotting,

  909. there's

  910. a lot

  911. of

  912. treachery,

  913. there's

  914. a lot

  915. of

  916. warfare

  917. going

  918. on.

  919. And

  920. poor

  921. little

  922. Israel

  923. is

  924. caught

  925. in

  926. the

  927. middle.

  928. Between

  929. Syria

  930. and

  931. Egypt

  932. it

  933. is

  934. the

  935. one

  936. that's

  937. kind of

  938. squeezed

  939. in

  940. there

  941. and

  942. never

  943. seems

  944. to

  945. get

  946. on

  947. very

  948. well.

  949. You

  950. have

  951. quite a

  952. number

  953. of

  954. verses

  955. that

  956. are

  957. about

  958. just

  959. one

  960. king

  961. who

  962. is

  963. described

  964. in

  965. verse

  966. 21

  967. as

  968. a

  969. contemptible

  970. person.

  971. We met

  972. him before

  973. in chapter

  974. 8.

  975. His name

  976. is

  977. Antiochus

  978. Epiphanes.

  979. And he

  980. was a

  981. Syrian

  982. ruler

  983. who was

  984. very cruel,

  985. who was

  986. very vicious,

  987. and by

  988. a

  989. combination

  990. of

  991. deceitful

  992. diplomacy

  993. and

  994. brute

  995. force,

  996. he had

  997. a lot

  998. of

  999. success

  1000. against

  1001. Egypt

  1002. and

  1003. in

  1004. controlling

  1005. the

  1006. nations

  1007. round

  1008. about.

  1009. And in

  1010. particular,

  1011. he was

  1012. someone who

  1013. really was

  1014. against

  1015. the Jews.

  1016. As you've

  1017. heard to

  1018. briefly

  1019. in this

  1020. passage

  1021. in verse

  1022. 28,

  1023. it is

  1024. not the

  1025. full force

  1026. of what's

  1027. happened

  1028. there.

  1029. In verse

  1030. 28,

  1031. it says

  1032. he will

  1033. take

  1034. action

  1035. against

  1036. Israel.

  1037. The

  1038. action he

  1039. took on

  1040. his way

  1041. back from

  1042. a campaign

  1043. in Egypt

  1044. was extremely

  1045. cruel and

  1046. very

  1047. vicious.

  1048. But that

  1049. was only

  1050. beginning,

  1051. because the

  1052. next time

  1053. Antiochus

  1054. went down

  1055. to Egypt,

  1056. he was

  1057. defeated by

  1058. the upcoming

  1059. Roman army.

  1060. Rome, of

  1061. course, would

  1062. be the

  1063. power in

  1064. the future.

  1065. And as

  1066. he went

  1067. home,

  1068. he vented

  1069. his fury

  1070. against

  1071. Israel.

  1072. And one

  1073. of the

  1074. things he

  1075. did, and

  1076. again we

  1077. talked about

  1078. this a

  1079. couple of

  1080. weeks ago,

  1081. one of the

  1082. things he

  1083. did was

  1084. to stop

  1085. the normal

  1086. sacrifices

  1087. in the

  1088. temple,

  1089. to set

  1090. up an

  1091. altar to

  1092. Zeus

  1093. there,

  1094. and to

  1095. sacrifice

  1096. pigs on

  1097. it, real

  1098. anathema

  1099. to the

  1100. Jews.

  1101. Antioch

  1102. Episanes

  1103. was a

  1104. cruel,

  1105. godless

  1106. man, and

  1107. you can

  1108. see that

  1109. if you

  1110. read through

  1111. the verses

  1112. in the

  1113. chapter.

  1114. Now so

  1115. far we

  1116. have

  1117. something

  1118. that is

  1119. historically

  1120. very

  1121. accurate.

  1122. But then

  1123. when we

  1124. come to

  1125. verse 36

  1126. it's a

  1127. lot more

  1128. difficult to

  1129. see what's

  1130. going on.

  1131. It looks

  1132. as if it's

  1133. still talking

  1134. about

  1135. Antiochus,

  1136. but there's

  1137. nothing in

  1138. his life

  1139. that corresponds

  1140. to what's

  1141. there, and

  1142. indeed nothing

  1143. in the

  1144. lives of

  1145. his

  1146. successors.

  1147. So what's

  1148. going on

  1149. here?

  1150. Well, one

  1151. suggestion, one

  1152. thing that

  1153. people would

  1154. hold to

  1155. is that

  1156. what we

  1157. see here

  1158. is Antiochus

  1159. as a

  1160. type, as a

  1161. foreshadowing

  1162. of what

  1163. will come

  1164. in the

  1165. end days.

  1166. A

  1167. foreshadowing

  1168. of someone

  1169. who's even

  1170. worse, who

  1171. will completely

  1172. fulfil the

  1173. prophecy

  1174. here.

  1175. The person

  1176. who is

  1177. described in

  1178. the Bible

  1179. as the

  1180. Antichrist

  1181. or the

  1182. man of

  1183. sin.

  1184. Now, if I

  1185. pursue this

  1186. view just a

  1187. little bit

  1188. further, the

  1189. 70 weeks that

  1190. are talked

  1191. about in

  1192. Daniel, 70

  1193. periods of

  1194. seven years,

  1195. and within

  1196. them you

  1197. see at the

  1198. end of

  1199. week 69,

  1200. God's

  1201. anointed is

  1202. put to

  1203. death, so

  1204. that could

  1205. be a

  1206. reference to

  1207. the Lord

  1208. Jesus.

  1209. And then

  1210. the thought

  1211. is there's

  1212. quite a

  1213. long gap,

  1214. gap of at

  1215. least around

  1216. 2,000 years

  1217. in there

  1218. before the

  1219. 70th week.

  1220. Before the

  1221. 70th week,

  1222. the church

  1223. is taken out

  1224. of the world,

  1225. as we read

  1226. in Ephesians,

  1227. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  1228. chapter 4,

  1229. and then this

  1230. man is let

  1231. loose.

  1232. He makes a

  1233. number of

  1234. alliances, but

  1235. at the end

  1236. he really

  1237. rises against

  1238. Israel, makes

  1239. his base

  1240. there as he

  1241. fights wars

  1242. on all

  1243. fronts.

  1244. And in the

  1245. end he is

  1246. roundly defeated

  1247. by God and

  1248. by his

  1249. army.

  1250. Now, I'll give

  1251. that to you for

  1252. your consideration.

  1253. It is one view,

  1254. as I say,

  1255. this is a

  1256. difficult and

  1257. in many ways

  1258. controversial

  1259. area, but

  1260. here is one

  1261. possibility for

  1262. it.

  1263. But let's

  1264. move on to

  1265. chapter 12

  1266. as we come

  1267. towards the

  1268. conclusion.

  1269. If chapter 12

  1270. might make us

  1271. despair for the

  1272. world around

  1273. us, that there

  1274. is so much

  1275. evil going on,

  1276. there are so

  1277. many people of

  1278. ill will in

  1279. leadership, and

  1280. we can see that

  1281. today as much as

  1282. Daniel could see

  1283. it or the

  1284. vision presented

  1285. it to him.

  1286. There is a lot

  1287. in the world that

  1288. should cause us

  1289. real distress as

  1290. Christians.

  1291. But chapter 12

  1292. is there to

  1293. give comfort to

  1294. God's people.

  1295. It starts with a

  1296. time of great

  1297. distress.

  1298. Jesus called it

  1299. the tribulation,

  1300. but ultimately

  1301. it says God's

  1302. people will be

  1303. triumphant.

  1304. One of the

  1305. things, one of

  1306. the glorious

  1307. things that will

  1308. happen is that

  1309. those who have

  1310. died believing

  1311. in God, believing

  1312. in Jesus, will be

  1313. raised to life

  1314. again.

  1315. And here in

  1316. Daniel in the

  1317. Old Testament, we

  1318. have something that

  1319. has developed in

  1320. much more detail in

  1321. the New Testament.

  1322. In the immediate

  1323. context, Daniel may

  1324. be talking specifically

  1325. about the Jews, but

1326. as we look forward, we

  1327. know from what Paul

  1328. writes and what we

  1329. read in Revelation

  1330. and elsewhere that

  1331. everyone will be

  1332. raised to life.

  1333. All those who have

  1334. died will be raised

  1335. and they will be

  1336. raised either to

  1337. eternal life or to

  1338. eternal judgment.

  1339. That's in verse 2 of

  1340. chapter 12.

  1341. Multitudes who

1342. sleep in the dust of

  1343. the earth will

  1344. awake, some to

  1345. eternal life, others

  1346. to shame and

  1347. everlasting contempt.

1348. All of us will be

  1349. judged.

1350. All of us will need to

  1351. face the Lord Jesus.

  1352. If we haven't trusted

1353. in the Lord Jesus, if we

1354. haven't put our faith in

1355. him as the one who

1356. died on the cross to

  1357. take our sins, that

  1358. judgment will be to

  1359. eternal condemnation.

1360. If our trust is in

1361. Jesus, if we have put

1362. our faith in him, we

  1363. will be raised to

  1364. eternal life.

  1365. And, says Daniel, there

  1366. will be rewards, special

  1367. rewards for those who

  1368. lead many to

  1369. righteousness.

1370. I would take it that

  1371. that is those who

  1372. particularly communicate

  1373. effectively the message

  1374. of hope through God,

  1375. through the Lord Jesus,

  1376. us, and to, through

  1377. that, our instrument

  1378. when bringing others

  1379. to him.

  1380. And I think,

  1381. ultimately, this is the

1382. key message we need to

  1383. take from these

  1384. chapters.

1385. God is in control, and

  1386. when the Lord Jesus

1387. returns, there will be a

  1388. judgment, there will be

  1389. reward, and there will

  1390. be punishment.

  1391. Those who trust in

  1392. Jesus will rise to

  1393. eternal life.

  1394. those who don't will

  1395. rise to eternal

  1396. judgment.

1397. That is a very solemn

  1398. thought, isn't it?

1399. And if we are Christians

1400. today, as we see a world

1401. around us with people who

1402. don't know the Lord Jesus,

  1403. perhaps have never heard

  1404. the message about him,

1405. it should be a real

1406. challenge to us to tell

1407. them the gospel of Jesus,

1408. that they may have hope

1409. that they will be raised to

1410. eternal life and not to

  1411. judgment.

1412. And perhaps all of us, as

1413. we think about these things,

  1414. we need to examine

  1415. ourselves and to make

1416. sure that our trust is in

1417. Jesus and that we know

1418. that one day we will go

  1419. to be with him.

1420. Now, our time is pretty

1421. well gone, so I'm not

1422. going to go into the

1423. latter part of chapter 12,

  1424. which is about timing.

  1425. There's three and a half

  1426. years in there.

1427. If you want to talk about

1428. it later, I'm happy to do

  1429. that.

1430. I think the key mistake

  1431. from that, there's a lot

1432. we don't know about the

  1433. future, and particularly

  1434. about the timing.

1435. We don't know when the

  1436. Lord Jesus will return.

1437. But let me end by

  1438. returning where we

  1439. started to the general

  1440. election.

1441. If you vote in the

  1442. general election, your

  1443. vote will probably be

1444. based on a combination of

  1445. things.

1446. Part of it will be your

  1447. priorities.

  1448. Which of the parties'

  1449. priorities chime with you?

1450. Part of it will be what the

  1451. parties have promised.

1452. Is it realistic to expect

  1453. what they've said?

1454. And is it desirable that

  1455. these things should happen?

  1456. But ultimately, I suspect,

1457. for many of us, it's going

1458. to come down to trust.

1459. Do we really trust these

1460. politicians to do what they

  1461. say?

1462. Do we trust that they

1463. actually are able to if they

  1464. want to?

1465. And do we trust that they

1466. have our best interests at

  1467. heart?

1468. In our country, here, time and

  1469. time again during the

  1470. election, the level of

  1471. trust in politicians is

  1472. very low.

1473. And we may well vote in

  1474. the expectation that

1475. ultimately we may well be

  1476. let down.

  1477. I hope as we've studied

1478. the book of Daniel, this

1479. section, but the whole of

1480. the book, that we can see

1481. that God can be trusted to

  1482. care for his people.

1483. Parts of the book come

1484. across as a bit weird,

  1485. certainly very difficult to

  1486. understand.

1487. Parts of it are very heavy.

1488. That you really need to

  1489. think carefully about what's

1490. being said, and even then

1491. you may not fully understand

  1492. it.

1493. But the big message, the

1494. message in chapter 1, when

1495. Daniel and his friends take a

1496. stand on eating food, and God

  1497. honors that.

1498. The message in chapter 3, when

  1499. Shadrach, Meshach, and

1500. Abednego refuse to bow down to

1501. the idol and are thrown to the

  1502. fiery furnace.

1503. The message in chapter 6, as

1504. Daniel refuses to stop his daily

1505. habit of prayer and is thrown

  1506. into the lion's den.

1507. And the message of the more

1508. difficult bits towards the end.

  1509. It's the same message.

1510. If we are faithful to God, if we

  1511. live faithfully in difficult

1512. times in a lion's den world, as

1513. Darcy's title says, then God will

  1514. be faithful to us.

  1515. We may face opposition.

1516. We will face opposition if we're

  1517. standing firm as Christians.

1518. We may face great difficulties in

  1519. our lives.

1520. And there may be times when we're

1521. looking around us at what's

1522. happening, and we say, why?

1523. Why, God, do you allow this?

1524. But ultimately, God is in control,

1525. and we can trust him for the

  1526. future.

1527. As John says in his epistle, the

1528. one who is in us is greater than

1529. the one who is in the world.

1530. So let's go away from this series

1531. with our confidence in God

  1532. increased, with an understanding

1533. of how great our Heavenly Father

1534. is, that he is in control of

1535. everything, and that ultimately he

1536. will be seen to triumph as that

1537. victory has already been won by the

1538. Lord Jesus on the cross.

1539. God will be seen to triumph as

1540. Jesus is recognized as the King of

1541. Kings and Lord of Lords.

1542. God will be seen to you in the

  1543. world.

1544. God will be seen to you in the

  1545. world.

1546. Let's join together in prayer.

1547. Our Father, we thank you for your

  1548. word.

1549. We thank you that although this

1550. passage is in many ways very

1551. difficult, yet what it brings across

1552. to us is a God who is in control, a

1553. God who cares for his people, and a

1554. God who ultimately will vindicate those

  1555. who trust in him.

1556. We thank you for the Lord Jesus.

1557. We thank you for his death for us on

  1558. the cross.

1559. We thank you for his resurrection,

1560. which gives us the assurance that

1561. those who die knowing him will also

1562. be raised to eternal life.

1563. Help us to trust him.

1564. Help us to be faithful in this time,

1565. and help us to be those who, like

1566. Daniel, put our confidence in God and

1567. see his blessing in our lives.

1568. We thank you for this time together.

1569. We thank you for your word.

1570. We pray you continue to be with us in

1571. the time of fellowship we have

  1572. together over lunch.

1573. We give our thanks in Jesus' name.

  1574. Amen.
