  1. Well, good morning, folks. Really good to be with you all here this morning.

  2. I don't know why, but as I was driving here this morning, I wasn't thinking that I would arrive and see so many familiar faces.

  3. But it's really good to see also familiar faces.

  4. Even Keita, who was speaking to us earlier, we just worked out that I know her dad.

  5. So that's nice. There's not many follow-wills in the world, I guess.

  6. But today, as Alistair said, we're continuing your series in the Psalms.

  7. Before we get to that, I'd just like to tell you a little bit about myself and where I've come from.

  8. So this morning I came from Kirkliston, just outside Edinburgh, where I live with my wife and our four kids.

  9. I worship at Kirkliston Community Church, and I want to thank you as a church for giving us some of your best people.

  10. Because the Johnsons, who were members of this church for a long time, are in KCC.

  11. And also, I think we stole your youth pastor, but then again, you've got Peter.

  12. So it must have been quite a while ago that Pip, Lynn, was here as youth pastor.

  13. So she's now youth pastor at Kirkliston Community Church, where we worship.

  14. I'm married to Jude.

  15. We've got four kids. Jude's a primary teacher.

  16. And we have Katie and I, who are twins, age 10.

  17. Anna's 7.

  18. And little Struhan is 21 months, and he has to be sat on to have his nappy changed at the moment.

  19. He's bonkers.

  20. So it's nice to get a break from them this morning.

  21. Only joking.

  22. I have the privilege of teaching at the Faith Mission Bible College,

  23. which is in the south part of Edinburgh in Gilmerton.

  24. And I'd like to just tell you very briefly a little bit about it.

  25. The Faith Mission Bible College is part of a wider organisation called the Faith Mission.

  26. It would be very interesting for me if you could raise your hand if you've heard of the Faith Mission.

  27. Oh, loads of you have.

  28. Wonderful.

  29. Now, I'm not just talking about the cafe and the bookshop.

  30. So the Faith Mission was set up over 100 years ago as a mission organisation with a unique calling,

  31. or a specific, particular calling, to reach the lost of Great Britain and Ireland,

  32. of the UK and Ireland, with the good news of Jesus Christ in rural areas.

  33. And that's still the focus of the Faith Mission today.

  34. The last great move of God in Scotland was the Lewis revival,

  35. the Isle of Lewis in the north.

  36. And one of the key individuals in that revival was a man called Duncan Campbell.

  37. He had been a faith mission worker, faith mission evangelist,

  38. then became Church of Scotland minister,

  39. and later he became the principal of the Bible College.

  40. And that sense of mission, that focus on evangelism,

  41. that desire for God to come again and work in us and through us and among us

  42. and in this nation is still very much at the heart of what the Faith Mission is about.

  43. And so we have a Bible College to train people for the mission.

  44. But again, one of your former assistant pastors trained at the Faith Mission Bible College,

  45. Alistair Chalmers, he's now at Fernie Hill Evangelical.

  46. And so students come to us for training in all kinds,

  47. to go into all kinds of Christian ministry,

  48. but many do go into the Faith Mission as evangelists.

  49. That's me on the screen there.

  50. That's me teaching a course on apologetics.

  51. And look, the people are absolutely gripped.

  52. So our vision is to train passionate servants of Jesus Christ

  53. for evangelism, mission, and ministry.

  54. And so every day I arrive at the college and I meet with my colleagues

  55. and we open the scriptures together and we pray together.

  56. And then we pray for the students, we pray for the day,

  57. and then we go and join the students.

  58. And one of them leads us in morning devotions and we worship together

  59. and we pray together.

  60. And then we spend the rest of the day studying the Bible and theology together

  61. in Christian community and fellowship.

  62. Does that not sound wonderful?

  63. Well, my friends, you could join us.

  64. So if you've thought for years, I would just like to have the opportunity to go a bit deeper,

  65. to study God's Word and all that it teaches us just a bit more deeply

  66. and with some more structure and more discipline.

  67. Well, you could come and join us just for one day on the 21st of September.

  68. My colleague Marilyn Burton will be teaching a one-day course on the Old Testament,

  69. how the whole Old Testament points towards Christ.

  70. And it's free.

  71. We'd love to see you there on the Saturday, the 21st of September.

  72. But maybe you would like to go deeper than that.

  73. Maybe you could spare a Tuesday, even just half of the Tuesdays in a year,

  74. and join us for our Foundation Certificate in Applied Theology.

  75. Two years to cover systematic theology, Old Testament overview, New Testament overview,

  76. Christian history, and then practical courses like children and youth ministry,

  77. pastoral care, evangelism, apologetics.

  78. So that's the advert over.

  79. But there's an opportunity at the Bible College just up the road from you

  80. if you have the time, maybe a sense of calling even on your life

  81. to serve God part-time or full-time in mission.

  82. And there's an opportunity to come and join with this Christian community

  83. and study God's Word together and see where He leads us all.

  84. So advert over.

  85. It's lovely to be with you this morning.

  86. We're going to dive in now to Psalm 117.

  87. Well, actually, before we start, I want to just ask you a question.

  88. How do you feel about what's going on in our world at the moment?

  89. It's quite difficult, isn't it?

  90. Watching the news, wars and the threat of war,

  91. riots in the streets, and deep, deep political divisions.

  92. And a culture that in many respects has completely rejected its Christian heritage.

  93. And a church, not this church, but many churches in our nation, most churches in our nation,

  94. in free fall.

  95. Are you ever tempted to let fear and anxiety and worry overcome you

  96. when you look at what's going on in our world and even in our own nation?

  97. Do you ever wonder, Lord, what would you have me do about all of this?

  98. Well, I think our psalm this morning contains God's antidote to the chaos.

  99. To the chaos around us in the world, the chaos that we might feel within us.

  100. So we've read Psalm 117.

  101. Do open it.

  102. It is, you may have noticed, rather short.

  103. It is, in fact, the shortest psalm.

  104. It's the shortest chapter in the Bible.

  105. It's been called the Tom Thumb of the Psalter.

  106. But that may be so, but it does not lack anything in significance.

  107. Just two verses.

  108. And yet, the great reformer, 16th century reformer Martin Luther,

  109. managed to write 36 pages of commentary on it.

  110. You'll be pleased to know I've only got 11.

  111. Another commentator said,

  112. this is the shortest song in the whole collection,

  113. but there is none greater or grander in its expression of praise.

  114. Again, another said,

  115. it's a dewdrop reflecting the universe.

  116. And part of what makes this tiny psalm so great

  117. is that it contains God's antidote to the chaos out there

  118. and the chaos in here,

  119. the despair that we might feel in a chaotic world.

  120. So let's just read it again,

  121. because it really won't take long.

  122. I'm reading from the English Standard Version of the Bible.

  123. Let's just read this short psalm again.

  124. Praise the Lord, all nations.

  125. Extol him, all peoples.

  126. For great is his steadfast love towards us.

  127. And the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.

  128. Praise the Lord.

  129. And I think, as I've been thinking on this and praying through it,

  130. I think the message that God has for each one of us this morning

  131. is through this psalm is,

  132. no matter what's going on in the world around you,

  133. let yourself, let your heart, let your whole life

  134. be taken up in God's great plans for his world.

  135. That's God's antidote to the chaos.

  136. So we're going to think about this in three steps this morning.

  137. Firstly,

  138. firstly,

  139. don't despair when you look at the chaos in God's world.

  140. Even when the world seems full of turmoil,

  141. do not despair.

  142. Praise the Lord, all nations.

  143. Extol him, all peoples.

  144. Now, I heard as folks are arriving this morning,

  145. there's quite a few visitors this morning.

  146. So it's so great to see you here today.

  147. Those of you who've been here for the last five weeks

  148. will know very well that we are working through

  149. a series in the Psalms.

  150. And this, we started off,

  151. and you started off, in Psalm 113.

  152. It finishes next week with Psalm 118.

  153. And this short section of the Psalms

  154. is known as the Egyptian Hallel.

  155. The Egyptian Hallel Psalms.

  156. And the reason they were called this

  157. is an ancient tradition

  158. to sing these Psalms around the Passover meal.

  159. So the Passover was the most important

  160. of the Jewish festivals

  161. where God's people celebrated the Exodus,

  162. the rescue from slavery in Egypt.

  163. And Hallel simply means praise.

  164. So the Egyptian Hallel.

  165. So these were songs of praise to God

  166. for his deliverance of his people

  167. from slavery in Egypt.

  168. And they would sing them around the Passover meal.

  169. So they would sing Psalms 113, 114 before the meal,

  170. and after the meal, Psalms 115 to 118.

  171. Now, again, very cleverly, I think,

  172. this series has been entitled

  173. From the Lips of Jesus,

  174. which I confess,

  175. when Graham first sent me the invitation to speak

  176. and I saw that title,

  177. I thought, wait a minute.

  178. I'm going to have to look into that.

  179. But it's hugely helpful

  180. because, of course,

  181. the Last Supper,

  182. which has been in the news

  183. for the wrong reasons recently,

  184. the Last Supper was a Passover meal.

  185. And this is fascinating.

  186. So we read in the Gospels

  187. that after Jesus had taken bread and wine

  188. with his disciples

  189. and told them,

  190. this is my blood of the covenant,

  191. which is poured out for many

  192. for the forgiveness of sins,

  193. they'd just done that together.

  194. This absolutely core and epochal event

  195. in the history of mankind.

  196. And then they sung a hymn together, we're told.

  197. Well, since from time immemorial,

  198. it was the Egyptian Hallel Psalms

  199. that were sung around the Passover meal.

  200. We can only assume

  201. that it was these very Psalms

  202. that came from the lips of Jesus that night,

  203. just before he went to the cross

  204. to die for the sins of the whole world.

  205. Well, that helps us read these Psalms

  206. a little differently, doesn't it?

  207. So what do you think

  208. was going through Jesus' mind

  209. as he sung Psalm 117 that night?

  210. Despair?

  211. As a first century Jewish person,

  212. an ordinary person living in Judea

  213. in the first century,

  214. there was every reason to despair.

  215. Like, you had been living for decades,

  216. 70 years,

  217. under oppressive Roman rule.

  218. They were brutal,

  219. and they were powerful,

  220. and they were clearly not going anywhere

  221. for a long, long time.

  222. And it had been 400 years,

  223. 400 years,

  224. since God had sent

  225. a prophet

  226. to his people.

  227. And while they waited,

  228. empires ruled them.

  229. There were wars,

  230. there were massacres,

  231. and there were all kinds,

  232. there was all kinds of suffering

  233. for God's people.

  234. And yet,

  235. praise the Lord,

  236. all nations,

  237. extol him,

  238. all peoples.

  239. What's going through Jesus' mind

  240. as he sings

  241. those words?

  242. Not despair,

  243. not hopelessness,

  244. but something

  245. very,

  246. very different.

  247. 500 years before,

  248. in Jerusalem,

  249. there was another

  250. Passover meal.

  251. And this was possibly,

  252. we don't know,

  253. but this was possibly

  254. the time that this Psalm 117

  255. was written.

  256. Then,

  257. to God's people,

  258. humanly speaking,

  259. had lots of reasons

  260. for despair.

  261. 70 years before that,

  262. Solomon's

  263. wonderful temple

  264. had been destroyed.

  265. And another mass

  266. of God's people

  267. had been taken off

  268. in exile.

  269. God's people

  270. were devastated,

  271. absolutely devastated.

  272. And yet,

  273. some had returned

  274. to Jerusalem,

  275. and they'd rebuilt

  276. a temple,

  277. not like Solomon's temple,

  278. but a temple nonetheless.

  279. Listen to what it meant

  280. for them

  281. as the foundation

  282. stones

  283. were laid.

  284. This is Ezra 3,

  285. 10 to 13.

  286. If you want to look it up,

  287. it's,

  288. I checked,

  289. it's page 474

  290. in the Pew Bibles.

  291. This is what it meant

  292. to them

  293. as the foundation

  294. stones of the temple

  295. were laid.

  296. when the builders

  297. laid the foundation

  298. of the temple

  299. of the Lord.

  300. The priests

  301. in their vestments

  302. came forward

  303. with trumpets,

  304. and the Levites,

  305. the sons of Asaph,

  306. with symbols

  307. to praise the Lord

  308. according to the directions

  309. of the king,

  310. of David,

  311. king of Israel.

  312. And they sang

  313. responsibly,

  314. praising and giving

  315. thanks to the Lord,

  316. for he is good,

  317. for his steadfast love

  318. endures forever

  319. toward Israel.

  320. And all the people

  321. shouted

  322. with a great shout

  323. when they praised

  324. the Lord,

  325. because the foundation

  326. of the house

  327. of the Lord

  328. was laid.

  329. But many of the priests

  330. and Levites

  331. and heads

  332. of Father's houses,

  333. old men who had seen

  334. the first house,

  335. wept

  336. with a loud voice

  337. when they saw

  338. the foundation

  339. of this house

  340. being laid,

  341. though many shouted

  342. also,

  343. shouted aloud for joy,

  344. so that the people

  345. could not distinguish

  346. the sound

  347. of the joyful shout

  348. from the sound

  349. of the people's weeping,

  350. for the people shouted

  351. with a great shout

  352. and the sound

  353. was heard far away.

  354. And some time later,

  355. the people of God

  356. struggling with despair

  357. and hope,

  358. they celebrated

  359. the Passover together

  360. for the first time

  361. in some generations.

  362. And so,

  363. what would have gone

  364. through their minds

  365. as they sang

  366. Psalm 117,

  367. praise the Lord,

  368. all nations,

  369. extol him,

  370. all peoples.

  371. How could this

  372. small, beleaguered,

  373. vulnerable community,

  374. how could they say

  375. anything

  376. to the powerful nations

  377. around them?

  378. How can we

  379. say

  380. to our world,

  381. praise the Lord,

  382. all nations,

  383. extol him,

  384. all peoples,

  385. when we see the mess

  386. in our world?

  387. Well, for them,

  388. in Ezra's time,

  389. they knew what God

  390. had promised.

  391. They knew the promises

  392. to Abraham.

  393. God had said

  394. to the father

  395. of their people

  396. many, many centuries

  397. before,

  398. all nations on earth

  399. will be blessed

  400. through you,

  401. through your offspring.

  402. A blessing to all nations

  403. was coming.

  404. And King David

  405. himself,

  406. God had promised

  407. through King David.

  408. David had prayed,

  409. all the nations

  410. you have made

  411. shall come

  412. and worship

  413. before you,

  414. O Lord,

  415. and shall glorify

  416. your name.

  417. And so they sang

  418. with faith

  419. and with hope,

  420. even amongst

  421. the pain and despair,

  422. praise the Lord,

  423. all nations,

  424. extol him,

  425. all peoples.

  426. They didn't know

  427. how God was going

  428. to bring this about,

  429. but they trusted

  430. that he's faithful

  431. to his promises

  432. and to his people.

  433. There's one more,

  434. one more place

  435. I want to point us to

  436. as we think

  437. just on this first point.

  438. If you turn to Romans 15,

  439. that's page 1141

  440. in the Pew Bibles.

  441. Again, I checked.

  442. In Romans 15,

  443. Paul says,

  444. Paul says,

  445. that Christ became

  446. a servant

  447. to the circumcised,

  448. that's the Jews,

  449. to show God's

  450. truthfulness

  451. in order to confirm

  452. the promises

  453. given to the patriarchs,

  454. to people like

  455. King David,

  456. Abraham and King David,

  457. and in order

  458. that the Gentiles

  459. might glorify God

  460. for his mercy.

  461. And then look down

  462. at verse 11.

  463. Paul quotes

  464. Psalm 117,

    Psalms 117:1

  465. verse 1

  466. as evidence.

  467. God has called

  468. all nations

  469. to worship him

  470. and no one

  471. can thwart

  472. God's plans.

  473. It's not

  474. a forlorn hope.

  475. It is what God

  476. is going to do.

  477. The people

  478. in Ezra's time

  479. could trust

  480. wholeheartedly

  481. that God

  482. would fulfill

  483. his purposes

  484. and his promise.

  485. And we today

  486. can trust

  487. wholeheartedly

  488. that God

  489. will fulfill

  490. his purposes

  491. and his promise.

  492. And so when Paul says

  493. we don't

  494. need

  495. to despair

  496. in the face

  497. of a world

  498. that rejects God

  499. and does so much

  500. evil,

  501. verse 13

  502. I love,

  503. may the God

  504. of hope

  505. fill you

  506. with all joy

  507. and peace

  508. as you trust

  509. in him

  510. so that you

  511. may overflow

  512. with hope

  513. by the power

  514. of the Holy Spirit.

  515. So what was it

  516. that was going

  517. through Jesus' mind

  518. as he sung

  519. this call

  520. to the nations

  521. and to all peoples

  522. to praise

  523. the true

  524. and living God?

  525. He is there

  526. having laid out

  527. the bread

  528. and the wine

  529. representing

  530. his body

  531. and his blood

  532. knowing

  533. that he's about

  534. to go to the cross

  535. and they sing

  536. these words together

  537. and he sings them

  538. as the maker

  539. of the universe

  540. with flesh on.

  541. The eternal

  542. Son of the Father

  543. made flesh

  544. come to dwell

  545. among sinful people

  546. to dwell

  547. among his creatures

  548. and so he looks

  549. at the Romans

  550. and he looks

  551. at the Jews

  552. and the Greeks

  553. and everyone else

  554. and he says to them

  555. this is why

  556. you were made

  557. this is what

  558. you need

  559. to praise the Lord

  560. to worship him

  561. with all that you are.

  562. All nations

  563. were made

  564. to worship

  565. the true

  566. and living God

  567. all peoples

  568. every person

  569. everyone

  570. only finds

  571. their purpose

  572. in him

  573. in the worship

  574. of the creator.

  575. and so

  576. Paul said

  577. later to the

  578. Corinthian church

  579. from now on

  580. we do not

  581. consider anyone

  582. from a worldly

  583. point of view

  584. and so when we

  585. look at our

  586. world and all

  587. the turmoil

  588. now

  589. let's not look

  590. at people

  591. from a worldly

  592. point of view

  593. the politics

  594. of the left

  595. or the right

  596. or the wars

  597. and rumours

  598. of wars

  599. we don't look

  600. at these things

  601. as the world

  602. does

  603. we don't look

  604. at our

  605. non-Christian

  606. neighbours

  607. or friends

  608. or family

  609. as the secular

  610. world would

  611. have us

  612. they too

  613. are creatures

  614. made in the

  615. image of God

  616. made to

  617. worship God

  618. who find

  619. who will

  620. only find

  621. their

  622. life

  623. and their

  624. purpose

  625. in the

  626. worship

  627. of the

  628. true

  629. and living

  630. God

  631. God is

  632. working out

  633. his plans

  634. in this

  635. tumultuous

  636. world

  637. and we

  638. can abound

  639. in hope

  640. as we

  641. trust in

  642. him

  643. because one

  644. day all

  645. peoples will

  646. worship him

  647. and praise

  648. his name

  649. so no matter

  650. what is going

  651. on in the

  652. world around

  653. you

  654. let yourself

  655. let your

  656. heart

  657. your whole

  658. life

  659. be taken

  660. up in

  661. God's

  662. great plan

  663. for his

  664. world

  665. so verse

  666. one is a

  667. call to

  668. the world

  669. to worship

  670. the true

  671. and living

  672. God

  673. and verse

  674. two

  675. gives us

  676. the reason

  677. why

  678. so of

  679. course

  680. the bible

  681. gives us

  682. lots of

  683. reasons why

  684. human beings

  685. should worship

  686. God

  687. because he's

  688. worthy

  689. because he's

  690. holy

  691. because God

  692. desires that

  693. we worship

  694. him

  695. but possibly

  696. what we're

  697. given here

  698. is the

  699. very heart

  700. of why

  701. we should

  702. worship

  703. God

  704. so verse

  705. two

  706. for great

  707. is his

  708. steadfast love

  709. towards us

  710. and the

  711. faithfulness

  712. of the

  713. Lord

  714. endures

  715. forever

  716. so in

  717. Hebrew

  718. poetry

  719. there's

  720. often

  721. parallel

  722. ideas

  723. and sometimes

  724. that's to

  725. highlight a

  726. contrast

  727. but here

  728. it's to

  729. drive home

  730. the single

  731. point

  732. that the

  733. greatness

  734. of God's

  735. love

  736. is for

  737. all of

  738. those

  739. who turn

  740. to him

  741. so the

  742. word behind

  743. steadfast

  744. love

  745. or unfailing

  746. love

  747. or in the

  748. NIV

  749. it just

  750. says

  751. love

  752. the word

  753. that's

  754. translated

  755. from the

  756. Hebrew

  757. is

  758. chesed

  759. sometimes

  760. it's

  761. translated

  762. as

  763. like

  764. some

  765. translators

  766. made up

  767. a new

  768. word

  769. in English

  770. loving

  771. kindness

  772. it's not

  773. a word

  774. but

  775. that represents

  776. a bit

  777. better

  778. what

  779. chesed

  780. means

  781. or

  782. sometimes

  783. it's

  784. mercy

  785. or goodness

  786. but really

  787. it's all

  788. of these

  789. and so

  790. much more

  791. so chesed

  792. is a

  793. word

  794. it's used

  795. again

  796. and again

  797. in the

  798. Bible

  799. and it

  800. refers to

  801. God's

  802. unfailing

  803. love

  804. for his

  805. people

  806. his intense

  807. divine

  808. love

  809. love

  810. so great

  811. that only

  812. the best

  813. human

  814. love

  815. is merely

  816. an echo

  817. verse 2

  818. says

  819. that it's

  820. great

  821. great

  822. is his

  823. love

  824. for his

  825. great

  826. is his

  827. steadfast

  828. love

  829. towards

  830. us

  831. and again

  832. that's

  833. the Hebrew

  834. word

  835. gabar

  836. and elsewhere

  837. that's used

  838. for an

  839. army

  840. prevailing

  841. in battle

  842. it's not

  843. like

  844. it's

  845. great

  846. like we

  847. say

  848. great

  849. this is

  850. like

  851. an army

  852. prevailing

  853. in battle

  854. or it's

  855. also used

  856. in Genesis

  857. for the

  858. floodwaters

  859. prevailing

  860. over the

  861. earth

  862. this is

  863. not a

  864. small

  865. thing

  866. the

  867. greatness

  868. of

  869. God's

  870. love

  871. is an

  872. unimaginably

  873. powerful

  874. thing

  875. chesed

  876. is God's

  877. mercy

  878. towards

  879. his

  880. people

  881. that he

  882. doesn't

  883. hold

  884. their

  885. failings

  886. there are

  887. many

  888. failings

  889. in their

  890. sin

  891. against

  892. them

  893. that he

  894. will

  895. forgive

  896. them

  897. completely

  898. only

  899. if they

  900. will

  901. turn

  902. back

  903. to

  904. him

  905. it's

  906. a

  907. love

  908. that

  909. arises

  910. out of

  911. God's

  912. faithfulness

  913. to his

  914. promise

  915. his

  916. covenant

  917. to his

  918. people

  919. that they

  920. will be

  921. that you

  922. will be

  923. my people

  924. and I

  925. will never

  926. let you

  927. go

  928. it's like

  929. the love

  930. of a

  931. perfect

  932. husband

  933. who yearns

  934. for his

  935. wife

  936. and is

  937. jealous

  938. is rightly

  939. jealous

  940. if she's

  941. wayward

  942. and the

  943. people of

  944. Israel

  945. were wayward

  946. again and

  947. again

  948. weren't they

  949. and they

  950. faced the

  951. consequences

  952. of their

  953. sin

  954. and yet

  955. God would

  956. not let

  957. his people

  958. go

  959. that is

  960. God's

  961. chesed

  962. and it's

  963. not

  964. sentimental

  965. it demands

  966. a response

  967. whole

  968. hearted

  969. trusting in

  970. it forever

  971. type of

  972. response

  973. so chesed

  974. God's

  975. loving kindness

  976. is

  977. God's

  978. powerful

  979. steadfast

  980. love

  981. for his

  982. people

  983. the nearest

  984. New Testament

  985. equivalent

  986. is the

  987. word

  988. grace

  989. and when

  990. Jesus sang

  991. this psalm

  992. after laying

  993. out the

  994. bread and

  995. the wine

  996. and saying

  997. to his

  998. disciples

  999. my body

  1000. and my

  1001. blood

  1002. given for

  1003. you

  1004. surely

  1005. God's

  1006. chesed

  1007. would have

  1008. been filled

  1009. with new

  1010. meaning

  1011. or in

  1012. fact

  1013. with the

  1014. fulfillment

  1015. this is the

  1016. fulfillment of

  1017. the meaning

  1018. of everything

  1019. said in the

  1020. Old Testament

  1021. about God's

  1022. chesed

  1023. it's the

  1024. fulfillment of

  1025. the Passover

  1026. of the

  1027. temple

  1028. of the

  1029. sacrifices

  1030. of all

  1031. God's

  1032. promises

  1033. because the

  1034. absolute

  1035. core

  1036. of the

  1037. message

  1038. of the

  1039. Christian

  1040. faith

  1041. is that

  1042. God's

  1043. chesed

  1044. has been

  1045. demonstrated

  1046. in history

  1047. elsewhere

  1048. in Romans

  1049. the Apostle

  1050. Paul says

  1051. God

  1052. demonstrates

  1053. his own

  1054. love for

  1055. us in

  1056. this

  1057. while we

  1058. were still

  1059. sinners

  1060. Christ

  1061. died

  1062. for us

  1063. so imagine

  1064. the thoughts

  1065. that went

  1066. through Jesus

  1067. mind as

  1068. these words

  1069. passed through

  1070. his lips

  1071. after the

  1072. bread and

  1073. the wine

  1074. knowing that

  1075. the cross

  1076. was before

  1077. him

  1078. agony was

  1079. before him

  1080. and yet

  1081. he knew

  1082. that by the

  1083. single act

  1084. he was

  1085. providing

  1086. salvation

  1087. he was

  1088. securing

  1089. salvation and

  1090. forgiveness

  1091. for the

  1092. whole world

  1093. and the

  1094. very

  1095. fulfillment

  1096. of the

  1097. words

  1098. that he

  1099. sung

  1100. the once

  1101. and for

  1102. all

  1103. total

  1104. and complete

  1105. demonstration

  1106. of God's

  1107. great love

  1108. and faithfulness

  1109. and it's

  1110. God's

  1111. steadfast

  1112. love

  1113. towards

  1114. us

  1115. it's

  1116. towards

  1117. us

  1118. this is

  1119. for you

  1120. Jesus

  1121. warned that

  1122. it's quite

  1123. possible

  1124. to worship

  1125. God with

  1126. our lips

  1127. but our

  1128. hearts are

  1129. far from

  1130. him

  1131. the

  1132. commentator

  1133. Christopher

  1134. Ash

  1135. says

  1136. the phrase

  1137. here

  1138. towards

  1139. us

  1140. might be

  1141. better

  1142. translated

  1143. over

  1144. us

  1145. for the

  1146. covenant

  1147. love of

  1148. God

  1149. covers

  1150. and protects

  1151. us

  1152. after

  1153. it has

  1154. first

  1155. overcome

  1156. us

  1157. life can

  1158. be desperately

  1159. hard

  1160. can't it

  1161. we look

  1162. at a

  1163. messed up

  1164. world

  1165. and we

  1166. think

  1167. well

  1168. what do

  1169. we do

  1170. about that

  1171. but our

  1172. own lives

  1173. can be

  1174. desperately

  1175. hard

  1176. just this

  1177. morning

  1178. my wife

  1179. had a

  1180. phone call

  1181. from one

  1182. of our

  1183. very close

  1184. friends

  1185. who lost

  1186. both her

  1187. grandparents

  1188. in the

  1189. space of

  1190. the last

  1191. four weeks

  1192. and this

  1193. friend said

  1194. this morning

  1195. that all

  1196. she said

  1197. is that her

  1198. mother died

  1199. suddenly last

  1200. night

  1201. we don't

  1202. know how

  1203. but we're

  1204. very concerned

  1205. life can

  1206. be desperately

  1207. desperately

  1208. hard

  1209. the

  1210. circumstances

  1211. that we

  1212. face in

  1213. our lives

  1214. can make

  1215. us

  1216. miserable

  1217. it can

  1218. be absolutely

  1219. miserable

  1220. we know

  1221. this

  1222. the Jews

  1223. of Jesus

  1224. day

  1225. knew that

  1226. the exiles

  1227. of Ezra's

  1228. day

  1229. knew that

  1230. but something

  1231. changes

  1232. decisively

  1233. in a

  1234. person

  1235. when we

  1236. get

  1237. that God's

  1238. love

  1239. this great

  1240. chesed

  1241. is not

  1242. just a

  1243. concept

  1244. it's

  1245. towards

  1246. us

  1247. it's not

  1248. just something

  1249. that other

  1250. people need

  1251. to know

  1252. that the

  1253. nations

  1254. need to

  1255. know

  1256. it's not

  1257. just a

  1258. set of

  1259. ideas

  1260. or beliefs

  1261. or a

  1262. philosophy

  1263. this is the

  1264. truth of

  1265. the universe

  1266. and it's a

  1267. truth that

  1268. we

  1269. must also

  1270. experience

  1271. to experience

  1272. the love

  1273. and faithfulness

  1274. of the

  1275. true

  1276. and living

  1277. God

  1278. so this

  1279. is

  1280. Christopher

  1281. Ash

  1282. again

  1283. this

  1284. love

  1285. and

  1286. faithfulness

  1287. is for

  1288. me

  1289. today

  1290. we have

  1291. an inbuilt

  1292. tendency

  1293. to pass

  1294. it along

  1295. to someone

  1296. else

  1297. saying this

  1298. is for

  1299. you

  1300. when we

  1301. first need

  1302. to say

  1303. this

  1304. is for

  1305. me

  1306. or we

  1307. say perhaps

  1308. this will

  1309. be for

  1310. me

  1311. but not

  1312. yet

  1313. for I

  1314. am

  1315. busy

  1316. or

  1317. preoccupied

  1318. whether

  1319. you're

  1320. male

  1321. or female

  1322. young or

  1323. old

  1324. rich or

  1325. poor

  1326. highly

  1327. or poorly

  1328. educated

  1329. whatever

  1330. your

  1331. ethnicity

  1332. this

  1333. call

  1334. and

  1335. invitation

  1336. is for

  1337. you

  1338. today

  1339. I remember

  1340. years ago

  1341. when I was

  1342. a student

  1343. I

  1344. set myself

  1345. a challenge

  1346. to spend

  1347. an hour

  1348. in prayer

  1349. and I

  1350. thought I

  1351. was being

  1352. very impressive

  1353. so this

  1354. isn't

  1355. if I do

  1356. this

  1357. I'll

  1358. feel very

  1359. pleased

  1360. with

  1361. myself

  1362. and I

  1363. found

  1364. this sheet

  1365. of paper

  1366. this

  1367. instructions

  1368. online

  1369. that gave

  1370. 12 steps

  1371. five minute

  1372. focuses

  1373. for my

  1374. hour long

  1375. prayer

  1376. and

  1377. the first

  1378. in the list

  1379. was to

  1380. worship God

  1381. as creator

  1382. the second

  1383. finished with

  1384. the line

  1385. I can't remember

  1386. what it was

  1387. it was about

  1388. the second

  1389. finished with

  1390. the line

  1391. take

  1392. time to be

  1393. silent

  1394. and let

  1395. God love

  1396. you

  1397. and it

  1398. hit me

  1399. then

  1400. for the first

  1401. time

  1402. I'd been a

  1403. Christian

  1404. for a

  1405. decade

  1406. by that

  1407. point

  1408. but for

  1409. the first

  1410. time

  1411. I realised

  1412. that I

  1413. actually

  1414. needed

  1415. to let

  1416. God love

  1417. me

  1418. to receive

  1419. God's

  1420. love

  1421. into my

  1422. life

  1423. and it

  1424. was like

  1425. water

  1426. for my

  1427. soul

  1428. this is

  1429. how we

  1430. become the

  1431. sorts of

  1432. people who

  1433. don't just

  1434. worship God

  1435. with our

  1436. lips

  1437. but actually

  1438. praise him

  1439. and extol him

  1440. from the

  1441. heart

  1442. John

  1443. says

  1444. the

  1445. apostle

  1446. John

  1447. says

  1448. in his

  1449. first

  1450. letter

  1451. we

  1452. love

  1453. because

  1454. he

  1455. first

  1456. loved

  1457. us

  1458. when we

  1459. realise

  1460. that

  1461. God's

  1462. steadfast

  1463. love

  1464. is not

  1465. just

  1466. words

  1467. it's not

  1468. just a

  1469. fact

  1470. it's not

  1471. just a

  1472. concept

  1473. it's

  1474. for you

  1475. it's

  1476. towards

  1477. us

  1478. it's

  1479. for me

  1480. it's

  1481. for you

  1482. it's

  1483. for now

  1484. despite

  1485. all our

  1486. sin

  1487. when we

  1488. get that

  1489. when we

  1490. get that

  1491. again

  1492. today

  1493. it changes

  1494. everything

  1495. doesn't

  1496. it

  1497. changes

  1498. the pain

  1499. it changes

  1500. how we

  1501. see the

  1502. chaos

  1503. out there

  1504. and we

  1505. cannot but

  1506. worship

  1507. the God

  1508. who loves

  1509. us

  1510. with such

  1511. incredible

  1512. mercy

  1513. and grace

  1514. so no

  1515. matter

  1516. what is

  1517. going on

  1518. in the

  1519. world

  1520. around

  1521. you

  1522. let

  1523. yourself

  1524. let your

  1525. heart

  1526. let your

  1527. whole

  1528. life

  1529. be taken

  1530. up in

  1531. God's

  1532. great

  1533. plans

  1534. for his

  1535. world

  1536. lastly

  1537. and

  1538. briefly

  1539. we're

  1540. told

  1541. that

  1542. the

  1543. faithfulness

  1544. of the

  1545. Lord

  1546. endures

  1547. forever

  1548. it endures

  1549. forever

  1550. and that's

  1551. not

  1552. it's not

  1553. exaggeration

  1554. it's not

  1555. hyperbole

  1556. he means

  1557. it

  1558. forever

  1559. really is

  1560. in view

  1561. in the

  1562. scope of

  1563. understanding

  1564. of God's

  1565. purposes

  1566. in this

  1567. psalm

  1568. it's the

  1569. same

  1570. future

  1571. that the

  1572. apostle

  1573. John

  1574. wrote of

  1575. when he

  1576. saw in

  1577. his vision

  1578. of heaven

  1579. in the

  1580. book of

  1581. revelation

  1582. he hears

  1583. there the

  1584. song of

  1585. heaven

  1586. by your

  1587. blood

  1588. you ransomed

  1589. people for

  1590. God

  1591. from every

  1592. tribe

  1593. and language

  1594. and people

  1595. and nation

  1596. there they

  1597. are again

  1598. this promise

  1599. that people

  1600. from all

  1601. nations

  1602. will praise

  1603. and worship

  1604. the true

  1605. and living

  1606. God

  1607. so the

  1608. ultimate

  1609. fulfillment

  1610. of this

  1611. psalm

  1612. is cosmic

  1613. this little

  1614. two verse

  1615. psalm

  1616. this fulfillment

  1617. is cosmic

  1618. one day

  1619. people from

  1620. all nations

  1621. and tribes

  1622. will praise

  1623. the Lord

  1624. and worship

  1625. him with

  1626. their whole

  1627. hearts

  1628. but there's

  1629. a sense

  1630. in which

  1631. if we're

  1632. going to

  1633. sing this

  1634. psalm

  1635. a call

  1636. to the

  1637. nations

  1638. to worship

  1639. the true

  1640. and living

  1641. God

  1642. we better

  1643. be doing

  1644. something

  1645. about it

  1646. that's why

  1647. in the first

  1648. few centuries

  1649. of the church

  1650. often when

  1651. the great

  1652. commission

  1653. was spoken

  1654. about

  1655. Jesus

  1656. call

  1657. to his

  1658. disciples

  1659. to go

  1660. and take

  1661. the gospel

  1662. to the

  1663. nations

  1664. to make

  1665. disciples

  1666. of all

  1667. nations

  1668. this little

  1669. psalm

  1670. 117

  1671. was often

  1672. associated

  1673. with the

  1674. great commission

  1675. F.B.

  1676. Meyer says

  1677. are we

  1678. doing all

  1679. we can

  1680. to kindle

  1681. the nations

  1682. to praise

  1683. they cannot

  1684. praise him

  1685. whom they

  1686. do not

  1687. know

  1688. it is mere

  1689. hypocrisy

  1690. to bid

  1691. them

  1692. praise him

  1693. if we

  1694. have never

  1695. sought to

  1696. spread

  1697. by lip

  1698. or gift

  1699. the mercy

  1700. and truth

  1701. revealed

  1702. in Jesus

  1703. our Lord

  1704. it's easy

  1705. to say

  1706. the right

  1707. things

  1708. isn't it

  1709. it's easy

  1710. to attend

  1711. church

  1712. to be good

  1713. Christian

  1714. people

  1715. in our

  1716. actions

  1717. even in

  1718. our

  1719. public

  1720. prayers

  1721. but it's

  1722. quite another

  1723. thing

  1724. to be

  1725. receiving

  1726. the steadfast

  1727. love

  1728. of the

  1729. Lord

  1730. towards

  1731. us

  1732. and

  1733. really

  1734. genuinely

  1735. desiring

  1736. to share

  1737. that

  1738. with others

  1739. and then

  1740. doing it

  1741. we had

  1742. someone come

  1743. to visit

  1744. us at

  1745. the college

  1746. recently

  1747. to inquire

  1748. about

  1749. studying

  1750. at the

  1751. college

  1752. he's a

  1753. Nigerian

  1754. chap

  1755. his wife

  1756. is working

  1757. here

  1758. in the

  1759. NHS

  1760. and

  1761. he's

  1762. working

  1763. elsewhere

  1764. but

  1765. his heart

  1766. is for

  1767. mission

  1768. and he

  1769. was telling

  1770. us

  1771. that

  1772. he was

  1773. walking

  1774. around

  1775. the

  1776. streets

  1777. of

  1778. Stirling

  1779. where

  1780. he

  1781. lives

  1782. and

  1783. his

  1784. heart

  1785. was

  1786. breaking

  1787. for

  1788. the

  1789. people

  1790. who

  1791. didn't

  1792. know

  1793. the

  1794. Lord

  1795. and so

  1796. he

  1797. decided

  1798. right

  1799. I need

  1800. to find

  1801. out

  1802. what I

  1803. can

  1804. do

  1805. in

  1806. this

  1807. strange

  1808. cold

  1809. country

  1810. of

  1811. Scotland

  1812. so he

  1813. told us

  1814. he

  1815. went

  1816. to

  1817. the

  1818. police

  1819. and

  1820. he

  1821. said

  1822. what

  1823. will

  1824. I

  1825. get

  1826. arrested

  1827. for

  1828. if I

  1829. do

  1830. street

  1831. evangelism

  1832. and

  1833. they

  1834. said

  1835. well

  1836. they

  1837. just

  1838. didn't

  1839. know

  1840. what

  1841. to

  1842. say

  1843. to

  1844. the

  1845. man

  1846. and

  1847. they

  1848. said

  1849. go to

  1850. the

  1851. council

  1852. and

  1853. ask

  1854. them

  1855. so he

  1856. went

  1857. to

  1858. the

  1859. council

  1860. they

  1861. also

  1862. didn't

  1863. know

  1864. what

  1865. to

  1866. say

  1867. and

  1868. he

  1869. said

  1870. I'm

  1871. here

  1872. because

  1873. I

  1874. want

  1875. to

  1876. learn

  1877. how

  1878. to

  1879. do

  1880. a

  1881. mission

  1882. in

  1883. this

  1884. country

  1885. because

  1886. it

  1887. is

  1888. so

  1889. different

  1890. from

  1891. Nigeria

  1892. and

  1893. we

  1894. just

  1895. loved

  1896. his

  1897. passion

  1898. for

  1899. the

  1900. lost

  1901. his

  1902. passion

  1903. to

  1904. share

  1905. the

  1906. good

  1907. news

  1908. of

  1909. Jesus

  1910. do

  1911. you

  1912. know

  1913. there

  1914. was

  1915. a

  1916. time

  1917. in

  1918. Scotland

  1919. in

  1920. the

  1921. early

  1922. 19th

  1923. century

  1924. when

  1925. people

  1926. bought

  1927. one-way

  1928. tickets

  1929. to

  1930. the

  1931. mission

  1932. field

  1933. and

  1934. they

  1935. packed

  1936. their

  1937. belongings

  1938. in

  1939. coffins

  1940. seriously

  1941. they

  1942. weren't

  1943. expecting

  1944. to

  1945. come

  1946. back

  1947. they

  1948. were

  1949. known

  1950. as

  1951. one-way

  1952. missionaries

  1953. there

  1954. was a

  1955. man

  1956. A.W.

  1957. Milne

  1958. he set

  1959. out

  1960. for

  1961. the

  1962. New

  1963. Hebrides

  1964. in

  1965. the

  1966. South

  1967. Pacific

  1968. he

  1969. was

  1970. aware

  1971. that

  1972. the

  1973. people

  1974. there

  1975. had

  1976. murdered

  1977. every

  1978. single

  1979. missionary

  1980. that

  1981. had

  1982. gone

  1983. previously

  1984. but

  1985. still

  1986. he

  1987. went

  1988. he

  1989. said

  1990. I

  1991. have

  1992. already

  1993. died

  1994. to

  1995. myself

  1996. and

  1997. he

  1998. lived

  1999. for

  2000. 35

  2001. years

  2002. with

  2003. the

  2004. tribe

  2005. when

  2006. he

  2007. died

  2008. they

  2009. buried

  2010. him

  2011. in

  2012. the

  2013. middle

  2014. of

  2015. the

  2016. village

  2017. and

  2018. inscribed

  2019. on

  2020. his

  2021. tombstone

  2022. was

  2023. this

  2024. or

  2025. something

  2026. like

  2027. this

  2028. when

  2029. he

  2030. came

  2031. there

  2032. was

  2033. no

  2034. light

  2035. when

  2036. he

  2037. left

  2038. there

  2039. was

  2040. no

  2041. darkness

  2042. what

  2043. about

  2044. us

  2045. it's

  2046. been

  2047. great

  2048. to

  2049. hear

  2050. about

  2051. the

  2052. missionary

  2053. work

  2054. in

  2055. Argentina

  2056. that

  2057. your

  2058. church

  2059. supports

  2060. and

  2061. prays

  2062. for

  2063. whenever

  2064. that

  2065. have

  2066. going to

2067. morning I saw lots of friends from Scripture Union and some of you have come back from SU camps,

2068. some of you have come back from SU holiday clubs. Such an incredible opportunity to share the good

2069. news. They need cooks every summer. They're looking for cooks every summer. They're looking

2070. for volunteers for their camps and it's an opportunity to share the good news of Jesus

2071. with children who are often hungry to hear. I met somebody recently who told me she didn't want to

2072. get involved in mission activities with the church and she didn't want her church to be doing that

2073. because what they were focused on was friendship evangelism. Well you know that's great. That's

2074. great to be where God has placed you in sharing your faith. She said she was really enjoying her

2075. early retirement because that meant she had more time to spend with her non-Christian friends that

2076. she'd met at university and they were being a witness to them. And I said, and how many of them

2077. have come to faith? She said, none. It's 40 years. 40 years and none of them have come to faith?

2078. Are we really just looking for excuses when there is a mission field out there? There is a world

2079. in our city, in our nation and beyond that needs to hear the great good news of Jesus. We don't need

2080. to wait 10 years before we tell our friends and family that Christ died for them and rose again so

2081. that they could have eternal life. We need to get on with this and proclaim this great good news of the

2082. gospel. We might feel it's a burden but it's not because what God wants is worshipers who worship him in

2083. spirit and truth, who have received his chesed for themselves, his loving kindness, who have seen

2084. just how absolute and complete that love is, displayed for them on the cross in the blood of his son,

2085. who are so captivated by his love that we cannot but share it. And so we cry out to God, fill us

2086. with your love, do your work in us so that we might be heralds of this great good news of the gospel,

2087. wherever it is you've placed us, whether it's with our friends of 40 years or our husbands or wives or whether

2088. it's to the ends of the earth. The antidote to the chaos out there in our world that can too often get into

2089. our own hearts is that we let ourselves, let our hearts, let our whole lives be taken up with God's great plans

2090. for his world. One day people from every tribe and tongue and nation will gather around his throne

2091. and worship him. That's where this world is going. That's why Jesus ultimately came. Let's give ourselves

2092. to receiving that work in us and to sharing that work with his world. Let's pray.

2093. Father, we thank you that your mercy is towards us. Father, we thank you that you see us and you know us,

2094. each one of us here. You know our name, you know us better than we know ourselves.

2095. And your desire for us is that we would be filled with all the fullness of God and that we would walk

2096. in the paths that you have prepared for us. And so God, would you help us today?

2097. Would you help us to be part of the fulfillment of the promise of this psalm,

2098. that we would worship you with our whole hearts and that we would be your mouthpieces

2099. to share this great good news with the lost world. And we ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.
