  1. Thank you, Olivia.

  2. It's not often you get your daughter to pray for you

  3. before you start to speak.

  4. So that is a bit of a new one for me.

  5. I just want to say just a few things about

  6. the relationship the church has here with Brunsfield.

  7. I was thinking how far it went back.

  8. Many, many years ago, just after we were married,

  9. and we've been married for 35 years,

  10. we entertained Archie Naismith for a full day.

  11. It's not things that young couples do nowadays in church

  12. because you kind of get them off their Xbox

  13. until they're about 40.

  14. But we entertained Archie for a full day.

  15. And then at night time, an elder said to me,

  16. can you give Archie a run to the station?

  17. And the rain was coming down.

  18. It was dark.

  19. I said, you can't ask Archie to go on the train

  20. and go back to Edinburgh.

  21. So I said, Archie, I'll take you back to Edinburgh.

  22. I said, on the one proviso,

  23. I need to be back pretty sharp.

  24. So Archie held on with grim fear and death

  25. all the way to Edinburgh.

  26. And I obviously noticed it was his son here.

  27. So if I made any impact on his life

  28. by my driving across here and back,

  29. then I apologise.

  30. We have a connection with the church here,

  31. really on a few fronts.

  32. I was introduced to Graham through my son.

  33. My son went to Christians in Sport.

  34. And that's where he met Graham.

  35. I then met Graham at a place I was going to see

  36. under our eyes, met across the table,

  37. but that wouldn't sound too good.

  38. But I was introduced to Graham.

  39. And then I contacted Graham about coming to speak

  40. at the church.

  41. Graham then said, well, we have actually a team

  42. of young men who would like to maybe try out

  43. and use their gifting coming to speak.

  44. And so I think we're about to approach

  45. our third session now,

  46. about 12 individuals coming to preach to us

  47. at Liberty.

  48. We're a small church in Bellsill

  49. in quite a difficult socioeconomic area.

  50. We are about 35, 40.

  51. We'd meet on a Sunday.

  52. So it has been good just to have different speakers

  53. coming from Edinburgh.

  54. And now we've drafted in Chalmers Church as well

  55. with some of their speakers to come and speak to us.

  56. So it has been good.

  57. And I've got to know some of the guys.

  58. I see Stuart there.

  59. And hopefully they have felt the benefit

  60. of coming through and speaking to us.

  61. That's just a wee bit about that.

  62. Psalm 118.

  63. I don't know if when you were at school

  64. you had a favourite subject.

  65. Mine was pretty obvious what my favourite subject was.

  66. I love PE.

  67. But a close second,

  68. a close second was English.

  69. And one of the things I loved about English was,

  70. and maybe you can empathise with me,

  71. is sometimes when you read a passage

  72. you thought to yourself,

  73. what is that all about?

  74. Not that noise,

  75. but what is that passage all about?

  76. The poem, the Shakespeare.

  77. What does Shakespeare mean when it says,

  78. oh, that this tutu, solid flesh,

  79. would melt thorn,

  80. resolve itself into a Jew,

  81. et cetera, et cetera.

  82. And I'd be like,

  83. what is that all about?

  84. And I used to love it when the English teacher

  85. would take their time

  86. and explain it

  87. and go through it

  88. and bring what is going on in the text.

  89. And in some ways,

  90. if you read Psalm 118,

  91. as I read it after Graham said,

  92. would you speak on Psalm 118?

  93. It was one of these ones,

  94. I accepted the challenge before I read the passage.

  95. That's a mistake.

  96. And I'm normally a three-point alliteration man

  97. from the New Testament,

  98. but Psalm 118 is different.

  99. And it took me time to go through it

  100. and to read it and to study it.

  101. It comes at the end of a series

  102. that you are working through.

  103. It is rich in so many areas.

  104. It was a favourite of Martin Luther.

  105. If you know him,

  106. who was the great reformer,

  107. he had etched on the wall of the castle

  108. that he had been kidnapped and kept safe in.

  109. I will not die, verse 17.

  110. I will not die, but live

  111. and proclaim what the Lord has done.

  112. He has chastened me severely,

  113. but he has not given me over to death.

  114. And he held on to that.

  115. And you might have read

  116. some of the verses there today

  117. and thought to yourself,

  118. I can empathise with that.

  119. I can hold on to that.

  120. And thank Fiona for the songs that you picked.

  121. You'd obviously read the passage

  122. and picked the songs in relation to that.

  123. It's part of the series of Psalms

  124. from 113 through to 118.

  125. It's a long psalm.

  126. It took quite a wee bit of reading there,

  127. but it's not as long as the next one,

  128. which is particularly long.

  129. I was thinking if I had that,

  130. I would have just been able to read it through

  131. and sit down.

  132. But Psalm 118 is a rich, rich passage.

  133. It's a liturgical psalm.

  134. We don't do liturgy much in church.

  135. You know, when you say,

  136. what do I mean by that?

  137. Well, there's a response here.

  138. There's a presenter presenting

  139. and there's a response from the individuals

  140. or from the congregation.

  141. And the clue is very often in the first part,

  142. there's a colon and there's inverted commas.

  143. And that's our response.

  144. And I'm going to try and develop that

  145. as we go through the passage.

  146. It's a psalm that was probably written by David

  147. at the top of normally the psalms,

  148. it would say written by the sons of Korah,

  149. written by Asaph, written by David.

  150. But there is none here.

  151. But most clever people say that it's been written

  152. by David.

  153. And I want to kind of take up that theme

  154. that was written by David.

  155. If you're writing a psalm like this

  156. and the words that come out,

  157. what you see is what is in the man.

  158. And by the man's experience

  159. and the guidance of the Holy Spirit,

  160. the words are written down.

  161. I love old songs.

  162. One of my favourites.

  163. The winner takes it all.

  164. We play it when you lose at sport.

  165. But it's obviously a song that is written

  166. from someone's heartache.

  167. And you can feel the heartache

  168. as you listen to it.

  169. But when David writes,

  170. he writes richly from his own experience.

  171. He writes from what has happened to him.

  172. And through God,

  173. and through God's Holy Spirit,

  174. the truth of that comes out

  175. to minister to us today.

  176. I thought of just an old,

  177. not an old hymn,

  178. I knew hymn actually.

  179. Normally I think of old hymns.

  180. But I thought of,

  181. just as I was reading it this week,

  182. I thought of a modern hymn.

  183. And over this,

  184. Psalm 118,

  185. the words that came to me were,

  186. I love you,

  187. I love you, Lord.

  188. Your mercy never fails.

  189. All my days have been held in your hands.

  190. From the moment that I wake up

  191. until I lay my head,

  192. I will sing of the goodness of God.

  193. And it's a summary.

  194. That's a summary.

  195. And that's what Psalm 118 is like.

  196. That's the outline for today.

  197. I'm going to just spend a wee bit more on intro,

  198. because intro is quite important

  199. in this passage.

  200. I've started in my old age to read a book.

  201. The book is called

  202. The Inner Game of Golf,

  203. believe it or not.

  204. It's not a deep book,

  205. but it's called The Inner Game of Golf.

  206. And it says,

  207. how do you understand this game?

  208. I've been struggling about it for years,

  209. but how do you get to the nub of it?

  210. And it tries to simplify it.

  211. Not too complicated,

  212. not technical,

  213. but tries to simplify it.

  214. And that's what I thought,

  215. as I'm looking at this,

  216. and I'm looking at the life of David,

  217. and how he could write this.

  218. I started to read.

  219. I thought, as background reading,

  220. I thought,

  221. I am going to read about the life of David.

  222. Because if you're going to write this in Psalm 118,

  223. what made you write it?

  224. And I want to look at that a wee bit today.

  225. What made him write it?

  226. And I took an old Bible that I had,

  227. and I were on holiday,

  228. and as I came to a key phrase,

  229. I underlined it.

  230. I underlined it.

  231. I underlined it.

  232. And I realized there was a pattern.

  233. There was a pattern to David's life

  234. that had never struck me before.

  235. And I'm going to just tell you some of the texts.

  236. 1 Samuel 23, verse 2,

    1 Samuel 23:2

  237. says,

  238. David inquired of the Lord,

  239. saying,

  240. Shall I go and attack?

  241. 1 Samuel 23, verse 4.

    1 Samuel 23:4

  242. Once again David inquired of the Lord,

  243. and the Lord answered him.

  244. 1 Samuel 30,

  245. And David inquired of the Lord,

  246. Shall I pursue this raiding party?

  247. Pursue them,

  248. he answered.

  249. And so it goes on,

  250. through David's life.

  251. 2 Samuel 2,

  252. In the course of time,

  253. David inquired of the Lord,

  254. Shall I go up to the towns of Judah?

  255. 2 Samuel 5, 19,

  256. So David inquired of the Lord.

  257. 2 Samuel 5, 23,

  258. So David inquired of the Lord.

  259. You got any idea?

  260. David spent his time,

  261. and before he made a decision,

  262. inquired of the Lord.

  263. He kept doing it.

  264. He kept repeating it.

  265. He had a relationship with the Lord

  266. that was a close relationship.

  267. We hear about David in 1 Samuel 13,

  268. as well,

  269. where Samuel says,

  270. Saul, you're no longer chosen.

  271. But,

  272. this is what Samuel says to Saul,

  273. But now your kingdom will not endure.

  274. The Lord has sought a man out

  275. after his own heart,

  276. and be appointed a ruler of his people.

  277. David's not dipping in and out

  278. with the relationship of God.

  279. He's not appearing one Sunday,

  280. disappearing for,

  281. going to his caravan the next week,

  282. disappearing for a holiday,

  283. then appearing again in week 4 and 5.

  284. He's not missing coming together for communion.

  285. He's not missing the prayer meeting.

  286. He's not missing any of that.

  287. Why?

  288. Because he had a close relationship with God.

  289. He was a man after God's own heart.

  290. So the summary of David is this.

  291. He was a man after God's own heart.

  292. He dedicated himself to the relationship with God.

  293. It also tells us that the spirit of the Lord was on him.

  294. And also,

  295. he was very gifted.

  296. I missed that bit out,

  297. but my wife in her Bible

  298. has underlined,

  299. and David was ruddy and handsome

  300. in appearance,

  301. but he had the genes as well.

  302. And when God is a man like that,

  303. it is incredible what he can do.

  304. And he uses David to be able to do this.

  305. Verse 1,

  306. Give thanks to the Lord,

  307. for he is good.

  308. His love endures forever.

  309. It starts with that.

  310. It finishes with that.

  311. Give thanks to the Lord,

  312. for he is good.

  313. His love endures forever.

  314. You could spend an eternity

  315. on those verses alone.

  316. One of my pet hates,

  317. and my wife will tell you,

  318. is this.

  319. Someone on Facebook

  320. is in their holiday in Mauritius,

  321. and they put,

  322. God is good.

  323. They have a new car,

  324. and they write,

  325. God is good.

  326. That's taking his name in vain.

  327. We border on prosperity,

  328. gospel,

  329. when we associate these things.

  330. God is good,

  331. whatever your circumstances.

  332. Whatever you've been blessed with

  333. or not blessed with,

  334. that doesn't determine

  335. if God is good.

  336. Despite our circumstances,

  337. God is always good,

  338. and his love endures forever.

  339. Another hymn says,

  340. Blessed be your name

  341. in the land

  342. that is plentiful,

  343. where your streams of abundance flow.

  344. Blessed be your name.

  345. Blessed be your name

  346. when I'm found

  347. in the desert place,

  348. though I'm walking

  349. through the wilderness.

  350. Blessed be your name.

  351. Give thanks to the Lord,

  352. for he is good.

  353. His love endures forever.

  354. And then verses 2 to 4,

  355. don't worry,

  356. I'll take some big chunks

  357. that time it says,

  358. Let Israel say,

  359. His love endures forever.

  360. Let the house of Aaron

  361. say,

  362. His love endures forever.

  363. Let those who fear the Lord

  364. say,

  365. His love endures forever.

  366. Let those of Brunsfield

  367. say,

  368. He does.

  369. And when you look

  370. at the individuals

  371. who are saying this,

  372. let Israel say,

  373. Israel,

  374. the nation,

  375. had been promised

  376. a covenant relationship

  377. with God.

  378. They failed,

  379. came back,

  380. were restored.

  381. They failed,

  382. came back,

  383. were restored.

  384. They failed,

  385. came back,

  386. restored.

  387. God takes them back

  388. time and time and time

  389. again.

  390. Let me tell you,

  391. you will sing,

  392. His love

  393. endures forever.

  394. Let the house of Aaron

  395. say,

  396. His love endures forever.

  397. That was the priesthood.

  398. They went in and out.

  399. They understood God's

  400. great love,

  401. God's great forgiveness.

  402. But as individuals,

  403. I'm going to refer back

  404. to a story in David's life.

  405. David had to go

  406. to the priesthood

  407. and he had to ask

  408. them for bread.

  409. And he asked them

  410. for bread.

  411. They had only the showbread

  412. that was there

  413. to be used in worship.

  414. And they gave him

  415. the showbread.

  416. That meant their death.

  417. Because Saul heard

  418. about it

  419. and he came

  420. with one of his hitmen

  421. and his hitmen

  422. killed all the prophets.

  423. They killed everyone

  424. in the town.

  425. They killed all children,

  426. wives,

  427. cattle,

  428. everyone.

  429. Now David is on the throne

  430. and they remember

  431. what happened to them.

  432. And they can sing,

  433. His love

  434. endures

  435. forever.

  436. Those who fear the Lord

  437. say His love

  438. endures

  439. forever.

  440. And then

  441. we consider

  442. maybe the next section

  443. which is in verse 5

  444. through

  445. to verse 9.

  446. When we look at it

  447. we realise

  448. that we move

  449. from the love of God

  450. to anguish.

  451. I thought that's

  452. a strange step,

  453. isn't it?

  454. To move from

  455. the love of God

  456. to the anguish

  457. in your life.

  458. Verse 5,

  459. in anguish

  460. I cried to the Lord.

  461. He answered me

  462. by setting me free

  463. or bringing me

  464. to a broad

  465. or a spacious

  466. place.

  467. David has been chased

  468. all over the place.

  469. He's been chased

  470. into caves.

  471. He actually stays

  472. with the enemy.

  473. He's been chased

  474. by his son.

  475. All sorts of things.

  476. He's chased

  477. all over the place

  478. and he has been

  479. confined to so many

  480. places.

  481. But he then says

  482. I cried to the Lord

  483. and he answered me

  484. by bringing me

  485. to a spacious

  486. place.

  487. A few years ago

  488. I suffered with

  489. claustrophobia

  490. because of a thyroid issue.

  491. And we were in a caravan

  492. in St Andrews

  493. and let me tell you

  494. that was tough.

  495. It was small.

  496. It was tough.

  497. But then

  498. to get outside

  499. to be along

  500. the east of the

  501. west sands

  502. with the wind

  503. in my hair

  504. which I had then

  505. it was a great

  506. feeling

  507. to be brought

  508. to a spacious

  509. place.

  510. To be walking

  511. on the beach

  512. to be walking

  513. in the glen

  514. when you've been

  515. tied up

  516. in small spaces.

  517. David says

  518. he's brought me

  519. to a spacious

  520. place.

  521. You can also say

  522. the Lord is with me.

  523. The Lord is my helper.

  524. The Lord

  525. is my refuge.

  526. I will not

  527. be afraid.

  528. I thought

  529. how wonderful

  530. that must have been

  531. for people like

  532. Gideon and Moses

  533. and David

  534. to know

  535. when they go into

  536. battle

  537. as well

  538. they know

  539. that the Lord

  540. is with them.

  541. That's a message

  542. that came out

  543. in the songs.

  544. The Lord

  545. is with me.

  546. The Lord

  547. is with me.

  548. The Lord

  549. is with me.

  550. And I come up

  551. with this myself.

  552. When we walk

  553. with the Lord

  554. when we walk

  555. with the Lord

  556. in times of trouble

  557. we run to the Lord.

  558. The two things

  559. go together.

  560. When we walk

  561. with the Lord

  562. in times of trouble

  563. we will run

  564. to the Lord

  565. and he knew

  566. this.

  567. the Lord

  568. was with him

  569. through the good

  570. times

  571. through the bad

  572. times

  573. when he had

  574. to take refuge

  575. when he was

  576. on the run

  577. always there

  578. and he knew

  579. that he was

  580. going to win.

  581. Wouldn't that

  582. be incredible?

  583. Anything you do

  584. you know

  585. you're going

  586. to win.

  587. It's a great

  588. feeling

  589. to know

  590. you're going

  591. to win.

  592. I remember

  593. it being a primary

  594. school.

  595. You know how

  596. they used to

  597. pick teams

  598. if you're

  599. playing football.

  600. I knew

  601. if I got

  602. a chap called

  603. Adam Gibson

  604. in my team

  605. I would not

  606. lose ever.

  607. Why?

  608. Because he was

  609. a star.

  610. He was

  611. incredible.

  612. Any side he

  613. played in

  614. he never

  615. lost.

  616. David knew

  617. the secret

  618. of the victory

  619. that would

  620. come

  621. because he

  622. had the Lord

  623. on his side.

  624. Then we have

  625. the victory

  626. of the Lord.

  627. There's a pattern

  628. to it.

  629. I'm going to

  630. read it.

  631. You can hear

  632. the liturgy

  633. of the response.

  634. All the nations

  635. surrounded me.

  636. Listen to this.

  637. But in the name

  638. of the Lord

  639. I cut them off.

  640. They surrounded

  641. me on every side

  642. but in the name

  643. of the Lord

  644. I cut them off.

  645. They swarmed

  646. around me

  647. like bees.

  648. They died out

  649. as quickly

  650. as burning

  651. thorns

  652. but in the name

  653. of the Lord

  654. I cut them off.

  655. You see the secret?

  656. The secret is

  657. the name

  658. of the Lord.

  659. The name

  660. of the Lord.

  661. And that's not

  662. if you read

  663. the Bible

  664. and you read

  665. particularly

  666. the Old Testament

  667. it's more than

  668. just having

  669. the name

  670. in your shirt.

  671. It's more than

  672. going out there

  673. and saying

  674. I'm a member

  675. of Brunsfield

  676. or handing out

  677. your tracks

  678. or whatever you do.

  679. It's more

  680. than that.

  681. The name

  682. of the Lord

  683. means something

  684. immense.

  685. When you read

  686. about someone's

  687. name

  688. in the Old Testament

  689. you'll read

  690. the name

  691. Benjamin

  692. means son

  693. of my right hand.

  694. You read

  695. Eve

  696. as the mother

  697. of all living.

  698. You read

  699. Methuselah

  700. when he's gone

  701. at his scent.

  702. When you read

  703. about Joseph

  704. naming his sons

  705. God has made

  706. me forget

  707. my despair.

  708. It means

  709. something.

  710. Your name

  711. in the Old Testament

  712. means something.

  713. And when you

  714. come

  715. and you use

  716. and David

  717. uses the name

  718. of the Lord

  719. it means

  720. something.

  721. something bigger

  722. than just saying

  723. in Jesus'

  724. name.

  725. Something bigger

  726. than all these

  727. things.

  728. Because in the Old Testament

  729. we realize that

  730. God explains

  731. his character.

  732. God explains

  733. his name

  734. time and time

  735. again.

  736. He explains it

  737. to Moses

  738. and Moses

  739. comes time and time

  740. again and God

  741. says to him

  742. in a particular

  743. instance

  744. God's name

  745. means.

  746. And then

  747. again in

  748. Exodus 34

  749. God's name

  750. is more

  751. than just

  752. appearing

  753. with the

  754. name

  755. on your

  756. shirt.

  757. We're told

  758. to worship

  759. it.

  760. We're told

  761. to praise

  762. it.

  763. We're told

  764. to fear

  765. it.

  766. And when we

  767. read the Old

  768. Testament

  769. we read

  770. that he is

  771. God Almighty

  772. he is Elohim

  773. he is the

  774. creator

  775. he is a

  776. provider

  777. he is Jehovah

  778. Jireh

  779. he is Jehovah

  780. Nessie

  781. he is the

  782. Lord is my

  783. banner

  784. he is Jehovah

  785. Rafa

  786. the Lord

  787. who restores

  788. it's a study

  789. on its own

  790. and when David

  791. comes for the

  792. victory

  793. he knows

  794. that when he

  795. is done

  796. he is inquired

  797. he knows the

  798. Lord is with

  799. him and he

  800. goes out in

  801. the name

  802. of the Lord.

  803. There's a

  804. particular instance

  805. in David's

  806. life

  807. and you know

  808. the instance

  809. David stands

  810. before Goliath

  811. it's a bit

  812. like the two

  813. boxers

  814. do you know

  815. I'm not really

  816. a boxing fan

  817. but the thing

  818. about boxing

  819. I like

  820. I like the

  821. beginning

  822. I like the

  823. end

  824. I like it

  825. pre-fight

  826. you know

  827. the pre-fight

  828. thing

  829. when they all

  830. walk up

  831. and they go

  832. like that

  833. you know

  834. I don't know

  835. what that's

  836. about

  837. but that's

  838. what they

  839. do

  840. and then

  841. they tell

  842. one another

  843. what they're

  844. going to do

  845. to each

  846. other

  847. well David

  848. was in

  849. that situation

  850. with Goliath

  851. Goliath says

  852. when David

  853. goes out to

  854. fight him

  855. I am a dog

  856. that you come

  857. to me with

  858. sticks

  859. and the

  860. Philistine

  861. cursed David

  862. come here

  863. he said

  864. and I will

  865. give your

  866. flesh to the

  867. birds of

  868. the air

  869. then it's

  870. David's

  871. turn

  872. it's his

  873. turn

  874. so he puffs

  875. out his

  876. chest

  877. and he says

  878. David said

  879. you come

  880. against me

  881. with a sword

  882. and spear

  883. and javelin

  884. but I come

  885. against you

  886. in the name

  887. of the Lord

  888. Almighty

  889. the God

  890. of the armies

  891. whom you

  892. have defied

  893. and then he

  894. and then he

  895. tells him

  896. what he's

  897. going to do

  898. with him

  899. after he

  900. has killed

  901. him

  902. that's

  903. confidence

  904. but he's

  905. not there

  906. on his

  907. own

  908. David knew

  909. that the name

  910. of the Lord

  911. was more than

  912. just going

  913. and saying

  914. oh this is

  915. God speaking

  916. it is the

  917. weight

  918. of God's

  919. character

  920. the weight

  921. of who he

  922. is

  923. the weight

  924. of his

  925. power

  926. and it

  927. says I

  928. cut

  929. them off

  930. victory

  931. verse 13

  932. to 17

  933. very simply

  934. David gives

  935. the credit

  936. to God

  937. all the time

  938. it's God

  939. who's given

  940. him the

  941. victory

  942. it's not him

  943. and when you

  944. read in verse

  945. 13 to 17

  946. it says

  947. but the Lord

  948. helped me

  949. the Lord

  950. has become

  951. my salvation

  952. the Lord's

  953. right hand

  954. has done

  955. mighty things

  956. the Lord's

  957. right hand

  958. is lifted

  959. high

  960. the Lord's

  961. right hand

  962. has done

  963. mighty

  964. things

  965. this is

  966. where my

  967. mind goes

  968. way off

  969. the boxing

  970. thing comes

  971. back

  972. I love it

  973. when the

  974. referee raises

  975. the hand

  976. of the winning

  977. boxer

  978. and David

  979. says

  980. I am raising

  981. the hand

  982. of the winning

  983. boxer

  984. and the winning

  985. boxer is God's

  986. right hand

  987. the right hand

  988. that was

  989. classed as

  990. coordination

  991. power

  992. strength

  993. magnificence

  994. and he says

  995. the Lord

  996. has

  997. done it

  998. David knew

  999. as well

  1000. talks about

  1001. anguish

  1002. in one of

  1003. those other

  1004. verses as you

  1005. read down

  1006. but the anguish

  1007. that has come

  1008. about being

  1009. chastised

  1010. severely

  1011. but has not

  1012. given me over

  1013. to death

  1014. David knew

  1015. what it was

  1016. like

  1017. he knew

  1018. what it was

  1019. like

  1020. to be

  1021. chased

  1022. by Saul

  1023. he knew

  1024. what it was

  1025. like

  1026. for Nathan

  1027. the prophet

  1028. to come to him

  1029. and say

  1030. you are the man

  1031. that has been

  1032. caught in adultery

  1033. he knew

  1034. what it was

  1035. like

  1036. to have

  1037. his son

  1038. taken from

  1039. him

  1040. because of

  1041. his sin

  1042. he was

  1043. chastised

  1044. he knew

  1045. what it was

  1046. like

  1047. to be

  1048. chased by

  1049. his other

  1050. son

  1051. Absalom

  1052. but he knew

  1053. what it was

  1054. like to

  1055. feel the

  1056. pain

  1057. of Absalom's

  1058. death

  1059. and he

  1060. knew

  1061. that God

  1062. was

  1063. chastening

  1064. him

  1065. he wasn't

  1066. perfect

  1067. but he knew

  1068. there was

  1069. always a way

  1070. back

  1071. Psalm 51

  1072. have mercy

  1073. on me

  1074. according

  1075. to your

  1076. unfailing

  1077. love

  1078. there's

  1079. always a

  1080. way back

  1081. no matter

  1082. where you've

  1083. gone to

  1084. and David

  1085. knew it

  1086. and then you

  1087. have the

  1088. bursting of

  1089. praise

  1090. you're going

  1091. to see

  1092. brilliant

  1093. verse 19

  1094. right the way

  1095. through to

  1096. 29

  1097. the bursting

  1098. of praise

  1099. it's like

  1100. David is

  1101. going through

  1102. this celebration

  1103. and he's

  1104. getting up

  1105. to the

  1106. temple

  1107. and finishes

  1108. and give

  1109. thanks to

  1110. the Lord

  1111. for he

  1112. is good

  1113. I don't

  1114. know if

  1115. you've

  1116. seen this

  1117. on Facebook

  1118. or something

  1119. like it

  1120. you might

  1121. see a

  1122. couple of

  1123. girls there

  1124. or you

  1125. might see

  1126. the face

  1127. of a

  1128. man

  1129. sometimes

  1130. you can't

  1131. see it

  1132. and you

  1133. need to

  1134. screw up

  1135. your eyes

  1136. just to be

  1137. able to

  1138. see it

  1139. but it's

  1140. a picture

  1141. of two

  1142. things

  1143. but you

  1144. can see

  1145. the picture

  1146. of a

  1147. man

  1148. can you

  1149. just flick

  1150. on to

  1151. the next

  1152. one

  1153. depends on

  1154. how you

  1155. look at

  1156. this one

  1157. you might

  1158. not see

  1159. it

  1160. you might

  1161. see it

  1162. you might

  1163. see the

  1164. word

  1165. Jesus

  1166. you might

  1167. not see

  1168. it

  1169. depends

  1170. your

  1171. angle

  1172. depends

  1173. as you

  1174. see in

  1175. Glasgow

  1176. if your

  1177. eyes are

  1178. scaly

  1179. or they're

  1180. not scaly

  1181. but you

  1182. can see

  1183. it

  1184. right

  1185. and it

  1186. would be

  1187. wrong to

  1188. move on

  1189. from Psalm

  1190. 118

  1191. not to

  1192. see

  1193. Jesus

  1194. it tells

  1195. us

  1196. that in

  1197. Matthew

  1198. 26

  1199. that when

  1200. Jesus had

  1201. finished the

  1202. institution

  1203. of the

  1204. Lord's

  1205. Supper

  1206. when he

  1207. had

  1208. finished

  1209. the

  1210. Passover

  1211. feast

  1212. it says

  1213. they

  1214. sung

  1215. a hymn

  1216. out to

  1217. the

  1218. Mount

  1219. of

  1220. Olives

  1221. Jesus

  1222. is

  1223. singing

  1224. this hymn

  1225. before he

  1226. goes to

  1227. the cross

  1228. this is

  1229. probably

  1230. the last

  1231. song

  1232. Jesus

  1233. sang

  1234. before

  1235. he went

  1236. to the

  1237. cross

  1238. Jesus

  1239. quotes

  1240. from this

  1241. psalm

  1242. himself

  1243. Matthew

  1244. 21

  1245. Jesus

  1246. says

  1247. have you

  1248. read

  1249. the

  1250. scriptures

  1251. the

  1252. stone

  1253. the

  1254. builders

  1255. rejected

  1256. has

  1257. become

  1258. the

  1259. corner

  1260. stone

  1261. the

  1262. Lord

  1263. has

  1264. done

  1265. marvellous

  1266. things

  1267. in

  1268. our

  1269. eyes

  1270. that's

  1271. verse

  1272. 22

  1273. Jesus

  1274. quotes

  1275. again

  1276. in

  1277. Mark

  1278. 12

  1279. quotes

  1280. again

  1281. in

  1282. Luke

  1283. 20

  1284. Peter

  1285. quotes

  1286. it

  1287. in

  1288. Acts

  1289. 4

  1290. Paul

  1291. alludes

  1292. to it

  1293. in

  1294. Ephesians

  1295. 2

  1296. Peter

  1297. speaks

  1298. of it

  1299. in

  1300. 1st

  1301. Peter

  1302. it

  1303. is

  1304. the

  1305. most

  1306. quoted

  1307. text

  1308. in

  1309. the

  1310. New

  1311. Testament

  1312. that

  1313. he

  1314. has

  1315. become

  1316. their

  1317. corner

  1318. stone

  1319. he

  1320. was

  1321. rejected

  1322. by

  1323. the

  1324. builders

  1325. he

  1326. was

  1327. rejected

  1328. because

  1329. they

  1330. didn't

  1331. approve

  1332. of his

  1333. origin

  1334. they

  1335. didn't

  1336. approve

  1337. of his

  1338. education

  1339. they

  1340. didn't

  1341. approve

  1342. his

  1343. rejection

  1344. of

  1345. traditions

  1346. or

  1347. they

  1348. didn't

  1349. approve

  1350. of his

  1351. friends

  1352. but

  1353. Jesus

  1354. says

  1355. it

  1356. that

  1357. he

  1358. has

  1359. become

  1360. the

  1361. corner

  1362. stone

  1363. the

  1364. thing

  1365. which

  1366. in

  1419. they

  1436. we

  1437. hear

  1438. it

  1439. we

  1440. see

  1441. it

  1442. we

  1443. can

  1444. see

  1445. the

  1446. picture

  1447. of

  1448. Jesus

  1449. but

  1450. as

  1451. Jesus

  1452. sang

  1453. these

  1454. words

  1455. I

  1456. just

  1457. wondered

  1458. how

  1459. he

  1460. felt

  1461. this

  1462. holy

  1463. ground

  1464. how

  1465. did

  1466. he

  1467. feel

  1468. the

  1469. Lord

  1470. is on

  1471. my

  1472. help

  1473. the

  1474. Lord

  1475. is

  1476. on

  1477. my

  1478. side

  1479. to

  1480. help

  1481. me

  1482. I

  1483. shall

  1484. look

  1485. in

  1486. triumph

  1487. on

  1488. those

  1489. who

  1490. hate

  1491. me

  1492. as

  1493. Jesus

  1494. picked

  1495. his

  1496. trial

  1497. imagine

  1498. singing

  1499. it is

  1500. better

  1501. take

  1502. refuge

  1503. in

  1504. the

  1505. Lord

  1506. than

  1507. to

  1508. put

  1509. your

  1510. trust

  1511. in

  1512. man

  1513. knowing

  1514. that

  1515. all

  1516. his

  1517. disciples

  1518. would

  1519. desert

  1520. him

  1521. consider

  1522. him

  1523. singing

  1524. all

  1525. nations

  1526. have

  1527. surrounded

  1528. me

  1529. but in

  1530. the

  1531. name

  1532. of

  1533. the

  1534. Lord

  1535. I

  1536. cut

  1537. them

  1538. off

  1539. they

  1540. swarmed

  1541. around

  1542. me

  1543. like

  1544. bees

  1545. would

  1546. the

  1547. bees

  1548. do

  1549. bees

  1550. sting

  1551. Christ

  1552. would

  1553. have

  1554. the

  1555. stinging

  1556. whip

  1557. on

  1558. his

  1559. back

  1560. he

  1561. would

  1562. have

  1563. the

  1564. gouging

  1565. out

  1566. of

  1567. his

  1568. flesh

  1569. the

  1570. crown

  1571. of

  1572. thorns

  1573. would

  1574. be

  1575. stinging

  1576. his

  1577. brow

  1578. this

  1579. was

  1580. like

  1581. a

  1582. swarm

  1583. of

  1584. bees

  1585. that

  1586. Jesus

  1587. would

  1588. be

  1589. feeling

  1590. the

  1591. sting

  1592. on

  1593. his

  1594. body

  1595. old

  1596. time

  1597. says

  1598. what

  1599. he

  1600. endured

  1601. no

  1602. tongue

  1603. can

  1604. tell

  1605. to

  1606. save

  1607. our

  1608. souls

  1609. from

  1610. death

  1611. and

  1612. hell

  1613. can you

  1614. imagine

  1615. Jesus

  1616. singing

  1617. I was

  1618. about

  1619. to fall

  1620. as he

  1621. carries

  1622. his cross

  1623. can you

  1624. imagine

  1625. him in the

  1626. upper room

  1627. singing

  1628. the Lord

  1629. is my

  1630. strength

  1631. he has

  1632. become

  1633. my

  1634. salvation

  1635. can you

  1636. hear

  1637. him

  1638. singing

  1639. the

  1640. Lord

  1641. has

  1642. chastened

  1643. me

  1644. severely

  1645. but he

  1646. has

  1647. not

  1648. given

  1649. me

  1650. over

  1651. to

  1652. death

  1653. can

  1654. you

  1655. imagine

  1656. him

  1657. singing

  1658. this

  1659. is

  1660. the

  1661. day

  1662. that

  1663. the

  1664. Lord

  1665. has

  1666. made

  1667. when

  1668. he

  1669. knows

  1670. what

  1671. is

  1672. going

  1673. to

  1674. happen

  1675. to

  1676. happen

  1677. to

  1678. him

  1679. but

  1680. he

  1681. could

  1682. still

  1683. say

  1684. give

  1685. thanks

  1686. to

  1687. the

  1688. Lord

  1689. for

  1690. he

  1691. is

  1692. good

  1693. his

  1694. love

  1695. endures

  1696. forever

  1697. because

  1698. he

  1699. would

  1700. then

  1701. say

  1702. father

  1703. into

  1704. your

  1705. hands

  1706. I

  1707. commend

  1708. my

  1709. spirit

  1710. so

  1711. the

  1712. challenge

  1713. for us

  1714. today

  1715. it's

  1716. easy

  1717. to look

  1718. at a

  1719. passage

  1720. like

  1721. this

  1722. and

  1723. see

  1724. it

  1725. as

  1726. intellectual

  1727. see

  1728. it

  1729. as

  1730. the

  1731. life

  1732. of

  1733. David

  1734. and

  1735. his

  1736. experience

  1737. see

  1738. it

  1739. as

  1740. the

  1741. life

  1742. of

  1743. Jesus

  1744. and

  1745. his

  1746. immense

  1747. experience

  1748. both

  1749. trusting

  1750. God

  1751. both

  1752. coming

  1753. down

  1754. and saying

  1755. God

  1756. is

  1757. on

  1758. my

  1759. side

  1760. God

  1761. is

  1762. my

  1763. refuge

  1764. God

  1765. is

  1766. my

  1767. strength

  1768. and

  1769. through

  1770. their

  1771. lives

  1772. but

  1773. the

  1774. psalms

  1775. are

  1776. personal

  1777. and

  1778. this

  1779. is

  1780. where

  1781. the

  1782. message

  1783. comes

  1784. home

  1785. to

  1786. us

  1787. to

  1788. say

  1789. is

  1790. it

  1791. going

  1792. to

  1793. work

  1794. from

  1795. my

  1796. ears

  1797. to

  1798. my

  1799. head

  1800. to

  1801. my

  1802. heart

  1803. and

  1804. how

  1805. I

  1806. live

  1807. that's

  1808. the

  1809. challenge

  1810. of

  1811. the

  1812. Bible

  1813. how

  1814. can

  1815. I

  1816. make

  1817. it

  1818. live

  1819. out

  1820. in

  1821. my

  1822. life

  1823. I

  1824. don't

  1825. know

  1826. where

  1827. you

  1828. are

  1829. today

  1830. I

  1831. don't

  1832. know

  1833. if

  1834. you

  1835. feel

  1836. battered

  1837. and

  1838. bruised

  1839. but

  1840. I

  1841. do

  1842. know

  1843. when

  1844. you

  1845. go

  1846. to

  1847. his

  1848. word

  1849. if

  1850. you

  1851. have

  1852. a

  1853. relationship

  1854. with

  1855. him

  1856. you

  1857. can

  1858. realize

  1859. that

  1860. he

  1861. is

  1862. with

  1863. you

  1864. I

  1865. leave

  1866. with

  1867. one

  1868. challenge

  1869. and

  1870. it's

  1871. the

  1872. challenge

  1873. of

  1874. this

  1875. verse

  1876. here

  1877. verse

  1878. 14

  1879. the

  1880. Lord

  1881. is

  1882. my

  1883. strength

  1884. and

  1885. my

  1886. song

  1887. he

  1888. has

  1889. become

  1890. my

  1891. salvation

  1892. future

  1893. it's a

  1894. future

  1895. tense

  1896. as David

  1897. speaks

  1898. he has

  1899. become

  1900. my

  1901. salvation

  1902. you

  1903. know

  1904. the word

  1905. of

  1906. salvation

  1907. the

  1908. word

  1909. is

  1910. Yeshua

  1911. do you

  1912. know

  1913. what

  1914. Jesus

  1915. name

  1916. is

  1917. Yeshua

  1918. when

  1919. we

  1920. go

  1921. to

  1922. the

  1923. New

  1924. Testament

  1925. Jesus

  1926. you

  1927. shall

  1928. call

  1929. his

  1930. name

  1931. Jesus

  1932. because

  1933. he

  1934. will

  1935. save

  1936. his

  1937. people

  1938. from

  1939. the

  1940. sin

  1941. and

  1942. the

  1943. challenge

  1944. today

  1945. for

  1946. us

  1947. is

  1948. we

  1949. can

  1950. have

  1951. the

  1952. same

  1953. relationship

  1954. that

  1955. David

  1956. had

  1957. we

  1958. can

  1959. have

  1960. the

  1961. same

  1962. trust

  1963. if

  1964. we

  1965. make

  1966. him

  1967. our

  1968. salvation

  1969. the

  1970. Lord

  1971. is

  1972. my

  1973. strength

  1974. the

  1975. Lord

  1976. is

  1977. my

  1978. song

  1979. he

  1980. has

  1981. become

  1982. my

  1983. salvation

  1984. he

  1985. has

  1986. become

  1987. my

  1988. Jesus

  1989. the

  1990. love

  1991. of the

  1992. Lord

  1993. endures

  1994. forever

  1995. give

  1996. thanks

  1997. to

  1998. the

  1999. Lord

  2000. for

  2001. he

  2002. is

  2003. good

  2004. his

  2005. love

  2006. endures

  2007. forever

  2008. our

  2009. father

  2010. we

  2011. thank

  2012. you

  2013. for

  2014. your

  2015. word

  2016. we

  2017. thank

  2018. you

  2019. for

  2020. the

  2021. fact

  2022. that

  2023. it

  2024. speaks

  2025. into

  2026. our

  2027. lives

  2028. it's

  2029. not

  2030. to

  2031. be

  2032. kept

  2033. on

  2034. a

  2035. distant

  2036. shelf

  2037. but

  2038. it's

  2039. to

  2040. come

  2041. home

  2042. it's

  2043. personal

  2044. help

  2045. us

  2046. father

  2047. to

  2048. lean

  2049. heavily

  2050. on

  2051. your

  2052. word

  2053. to

  2054. lean

  2055. heavily

  2056. on

  2057. you

  2058. to

  2059. realize

  2060. the

  2061. Lord

  2062. is

  2063. a

  2064. refuge

  2065. and

  2066. our

  2067. strength

  2068. and

  2069. our

  2070. salvation

  2071. father

  2072. I

  2073. thank

  2074. you

  2075. for

  2076. that

  2077. I

  2078. thank

  2079. you

  2080. for

  2081. being

  2082. my

  2083. salvation

  2084. for

  2085. dealing

  2086. with

  2087. my

  2088. sin

  2089. to

  2090. make

  2091. me

  2092. stand

  2093. before

  2094. you

  2095. perfect

  2096. because

  2097. of

  2098. what

  2099. Christ

  2100. has

  2101. done

  2102. I

  2103. thank

  2104. you

  2105. for

  2106. our

  2107. lovely

  2108. Lord

  2109. Jesus

  2110. I

  2111. just

  2112. pray

  2113. that

  2114. today

  2115. we

  2116. would

  2117. realize

  2118. the

  2119. sacrifice

  2120. that

  2121. he

  2122. made

  2123. understand

  2124. it

  2125. in

  2126. some

  2127. small

  2128. way

  2129. a bit

  2130. more

  2131. but

  2132. help

  2133. this

  2134. word

  2135. to

  2136. change

  2137. our

  2138. lives

  2139. help

  2140. it

  2141. to

  2142. change

  2143. my

  2144. lives

  2145. for

  2146. I

  2147. pray

  2148. in

  2149. his

  2150. name

  2151. in

  2152. the

  2153. strong

  2154. name

  2155. and

  2156. the

  2157. precious

  2158. name

  2159. Amen
