  1. Okay, thanks so much, Sarah.

  2. So this is just truly a remarkable passage.

  3. And please, whoever you are here today,

  4. tune into what God says is true.

  5. It's one of these passages that you think,

  6. I wouldn't believe this if it weren't for the fact

  7. that God tells me it's true in his word.

  8. And so whoever you are here today,

  9. whatever's going on in your life,

  10. whoever you come here today,

  11. this is something really worth tuning into.

  12. So let me just try and get this to the heart of it.

  13. I lived one of my worst nightmares recently.

  14. So it was the middle of the night

  15. and I'm just hitting the greatly sought after

  16. deep sleep phase of the night.

  17. And I happen to look up and I see at the end of the bed,

  18. I see a silhouette of a person.

  19. And what I do is I inwardly give myself that pep talk.

  20. I think, come on, you've done this so many times before.

  21. You're almost 40.

  22. Never has there really been a person at the end of your bed.

  23. It's just a light hitting the gap in the window

  24. and it appears like that.

  25. It's just time to go back to sleep.

  26. Everything's fine.

  27. But then the silhouette moved

  28. and I discovered it was a person.

  29. It was a little person.

  30. And because I went on a sleepover when I was young

  31. and we watched horror films for that one evening

  32. and I cannot get the images out of my head,

  33. the fact that it was a little child

  34. added to the sense of fear

  35. and I could feel the adrenaline beginning to pump

  36. through my body

  37. and this whole fight or flight thing

  38. kicks into my system.

  39. And I think to myself,

  40. who dares waltz into my bedroom

  41. uninvited in the middle of the night?

  42. And then the answer came to my head,

  43. actually there's three,

  44. technically there's four

  45. when she can learn to walk

  46. that can do that.

  47. And the silhouette spoke

  48. and the silhouette said,

  49. not Mr. Shanks.

  50. Okay, that's how my bank relates to me.

  51. The silhouette said,

  52. not Graham.

  53. That's how you relate to me.

  54. The silhouette said,

  55. Daddy.

  56. Because that's how my children relate to me.

  57. Dear friends,

  58. if you take one thing from this today,

  59. let it be this,

  60. that as earth shattering as this passage is,

  61. it really is simple.

  62. The one thing to take from this passage today

  63. is that this is exactly how

  64. a Christian believer

  65. can relate to the God of the universe.

  66. And if you take one word from this sermon today,

  67. and I hope you take a lot of words,

  68. but if you take one word from it today,

  69. maybe the one that appears at verse 15,

  70. it is the word Father.

  71. Father.

  72. That is what the God of all creation

  73. has done to write that identity

  74. all over our lives.

  75. It's what the God of the Bible does.

  76. His is the light that can transform

  77. the messiest and the darkest

  78. and the bleakest of situations.

  79. Let me just do a little bit of work

  80. on that word Father,

  81. because I don't know how it lands

  82. on many of us today.

  83. It's a deeply relational claim.

  84. It's a deeply intimate word.

  85. And it's one that differentiates Christianity

  86. from every other religious faith system

  87. in the world.

  88. In fact, if you're looking for a little example of that,

  89. here's Muslim scholar Shabir Akhtar,

  90. who died not so long ago,

  91. taught in Oxford for a while.

  92. And he's letting us see how our Muslim friends,

  93. and we love them,

  94. how they understand this.

  95. He says,

  96. Muslims do not see God as their father.

  97. Men are servants of a just master.

  98. They cannot,

  99. in Orthodox Islam,

  100. typically attain any greater degree of intimacy

  101. with their creator.

  102. And so how different, then,

  103. the God of the Bible?

  104. This is a God who has made himself known.

  105. He's made himself known in creation,

  106. generally.

  107. He's made himself known in his word,

  108. specifically.

  109. And he's made himself known in his son,

  110. perfectly.

  111. And those three things come together

  112. and tell you that this God longs to be known.

  113. He is a God who has revealed himself.

  114. And he's a God,

  115. if you turn to the opening pages of the Bible,

  116. who has made human beings in his image.

  117. It means whoever you are here today,

  118. whatever is going on in your life,

  119. you are somebody who has been wonderfully made

  120. in the image of God.

  121. Dignity is not something you earn.

  122. Dignity is something that is pronounced on you

  123. from the outside.

  124. And because we have been made in his image,

  125. dear friends,

  126. it explains why,

  127. as human beings,

  128. we are hardwired for relationship.

  129. Because he is a father, son, spirit.

  130. He is the relational God.

  131. So to be made in his image

  132. helps us understand

  133. why we long for relationships.

  134. And that's why we found COVID so difficult,

  135. wasn't it?

  136. Because for so long,

  137. those relationships,

  138. we can't have them with a screen.

  139. And that's what the word father is telling us.

  140. And I recognize it for many of us here today,

  141. that word doesn't conjure up happy thoughts.

  142. Because I imagine it for many of us,

  143. we know what it is to be deeply hurt

  144. by an earthly father.

  145. And so maybe you hear that word

  146. and you're suspicious.

  147. You're wondering what this father in heaven is like,

  148. whether he's trustworthy,

  149. whether he'll be any good.

  150. If you want to know what he is like,

  151. look at Jesus.

  152. Because there is no God in heaven

  153. who is unlike Jesus.

  154. And maybe for us,

  155. maybe you hear that word father

  156. and actually it's really painful

  157. because you've lost your father.

  158. All of those things

  159. that you most loved about him,

  160. the way that he just knew you,

  161. the way that he could make you laugh,

  162. the way that he could pick you up,

  163. the way that he was there for you

  164. in the hardest of times.

  165. This is the perfect father

  166. who you were created to know.

  167. And I always wonder whether God,

  168. that's the reason why he weaves

  169. these longings and experiences

  170. into the tapestry of human life

  171. so that we'll understand

  172. a little bit more

  173. what he is like.

  174. Those famous words of Augustine

  175. that are a bit cliche,

  176. but one of the things about cliches

  177. is that they're truthful, right?

  178. So you made us for yourself, O Lord,

  179. and our heart is restless

  180. until it rests in you.

  181. This is the father

  182. who we were made to know.

  183. Now last week we thought

  184. as we began this chapter,

  185. as we entered this chapter,

  186. all about Christian assurance,

  187. how the Christian

  188. is united to Jesus.

  189. If you didn't listen to that last week,

  190. go back and listen to it.

  191. It's what it says.

  192. It is to be a Christian,

  193. that declaration

  194. that God makes over us,

  195. remember it?

  196. Those 10 words

  197. that will transform our lives.

  198. There,

  199. now for,

  200. no,

  201. there's,

  202. therefore,

  203. now,

  204. no condemnation

  205. for those in Christ Jesus.

  206. And the word,

  207. so then,

  208. at verse 12,

  209. is Paul's way,

  210. if you see it in the text here,

  211. verse 12,

  212. it's his way of saying,

  213. this is what that now means for you

  214. in your life,

  215. dear Roman Christians.

  216. And here's the earth-shattering truth

  217. that this is telling us,

  218. that this God

  219. isn't simply after us

  220. being declared

  221. innocent rather than guilty,

  222. as wonderful as that is.

  223. the intention of this God's heart

  224. is way bigger than that.

  225. It's way bigger than that.

  226. It's way more glorious than that.

  227. This God

  228. wants us to be

  229. declared

  230. family.

  231. And so we move

  232. downstream

  233. from the declaration

  234. to the invitation.

  235. So in light of that

  236. no condemnation,

  237. how does God invite us,

  238. draw us in

  239. to live?

  240. Two points for us this morning.

  241. Here's number one.

  242. As people who bear

  243. the family likeness.

  244. Now there's a famous story told

  245. of the late

  246. Queen Mum

  247. who turned up

  248. to a royal visit

  249. in her limo

  250. and in the back of the limo

  251. were her children.

  252. Before getting out of the car,

  253. she turns to the back

  254. and she says this line.

  255. She says,

  256. remember children,

  257. royal children,

  258. royal manners.

  259. Now you could be forgiven

  260. for thinking

  261. that's exactly what God

  262. is saying to us here.

  263. Don't let the side down.

  264. Don't slip.

  265. Keep your chin up.

  266. Keep up appearances.

  267. And yet the problem is,

  268. see when I try and live

  269. a God-honoring,

  270. moral life on my own,

  271. I'm not very good at it.

  272. I fall,

  273. I make mistakes,

  274. I hurt people,

  275. I get it wrong.

  276. And God here says,

  277. I know.

  278. Friends, without the Spirit,

  279. you and I are like

  280. a mobile phone

  281. that has run

  282. out of battery.

  283. You can try

  284. all you like

  285. to rub the battery,

  286. try and get the thing started,

  287. speak life over it,

  288. but it doesn't work.

  289. And this is what the Bible

  290. says we were

  291. before Jesus

  292. got involved

  293. in our lives.

  294. We were slaves

  295. like we were singing

  296. in the second song

  297. this morning,

  298. slaves to our sin.

  299. We were slaves

  300. to our flesh.

  301. Everything we were doing

  302. was out of

  303. this

  304. me first

  305. mentality.

  306. But see the hope

  307. for failures

  308. like me

  309. at verse 13.

  310. How do we live

  311. a God-glorifying life?

  312. Just see it

  313. in verse 13.

  314. How do we please

  315. this God?

  316. What do we need?

  317. We need to be connected

  318. to a new power

  319. that will bring us

  320. inwardly

  321. to life.

  322. And feel

  323. those words

  324. by the Spirit.

  325. And that's what

  326. the Spirit living

  327. in us does.

  328. He is the animating

  329. presence of the

  330. Christian life.

  331. He helps us

  332. and just follow

  333. the logic of the

  334. passage.

  335. He helps us

  336. to put to death

  337. the deeds

  338. of the body.

  339. Feel the strength

  340. of that phrase

  341. put to death.

  342. I'm always amazed

  343. when you watch

  344. those programs,

  345. those animal programs.

  346. And you get

  347. the animal

  348. hunter saying

  349. I kind of grew up

  350. with this lion.

  351. I kind of played

  352. with this lion.

  353. I stroked this lion.

  354. I put the bottle

  355. in this lion.

  356. and we're surprised

  357. when we learn

  358. that the lion

  359. grew up

  360. and tried to

  361. eat the person.

  362. Right?

  363. And it's this idea

  364. of recognize

  365. what is going on.

  366. Put to death

  367. the deeds of the body.

  368. Don't stroke.

  369. Don't negotiate.

  370. Don't try and bargain

  371. with.

  372. Sever ties

  373. is what he's saying.

  374. Sever ties

  375. with the old us.

  376. The old us

  377. with the old way

  378. of thinking

  379. and live out

  380. the new us

  381. that God has created

  382. in Christ Jesus.

  383. We've got to see

  384. that this is deeper

  385. than behavior modification.

  386. Right?

  387. This is not fake it

  388. till you make it

  389. with a religious

  390. veneer on top.

  391. Because let me tell you

  392. church is the easiest

  393. place to hide

  394. from God.

  395. The spirit

  396. he transforms

  397. our inner tastes.

  398. The spirit

  399. puts new desires

  400. in us.

  401. And whereas before

  402. we reveled

  403. in our sin

  404. now we come

  405. to find

  406. a greater delight

  407. in the God

  408. who has saved us.

  409. The sin

  410. that pleased us

  411. before

  412. now becomes

  413. odious.

  414. The God

  415. that we flinched

  416. from on the other hand

  417. becomes

  418. entrancing.

  419. And what does

  420. that look like

  421. you see?

  422. A better question

  423. to ask is

  424. who does

  425. that look like?

  426. The spirit

  427. is working

  428. in us

  429. and forming us

  430. so that we would

  431. increasingly come

  432. to bear the image

  433. of Jesus.

  434. Now there's a myth

  435. that's often peddled

  436. in our culture

  437. that God

  438. is a kind of

  439. life stealer.

  440. And I imagine

  441. that's how many

  442. of our dear

  443. non-Christian friends

  444. who we love

  445. might look at us

  446. and think

  447. why would you

  448. sign up for

  449. something like that?

  450. Do you remember

  451. there was this

  452. famous slogan

  453. that was on the

  454. side of buses

  455. in London

  456. a number of years

  457. ago

  458. promoted by

  459. Richard Dawkins.

  460. There probably

  461. is no God

  462. so stop worrying

  463. and enjoy

  464. your life.

  465. Is God

  466. some kind of

  467. killjoy in the sky?

  468. Is he the referee

  469. in the sky

  470. who always

  471. gets it wrong?

  472. The person

  473. who we love

  474. to hate

  475. who's just out

  476. to spoil

  477. the fun?

  478. Friends,

  479. if holiness

  480. is being transformed

  481. into the image

  482. of Jesus

  483. then you look

  484. at Jesus

  485. in the scriptures

  486. and you have

  487. to say

  488. here is a man

  489. who is truly

  490. alive.

  491. The first time

  492. I read about him

  493. thinking that

  494. here is a man

  495. who does not

  496. seem to be

  497. missing out

  498. on life.

  499. So to be

  500. transformed

  501. into his

  502. image

  503. is to become

  504. more human

  505. not less.

  506. Jesus as it were

  507. he shows us

  508. what life

  509. was always

  510. meant to

  511. look like.

  512. And so with

  513. that framework

  514. in mind

  515. if that is

  516. where the

  517. spirit is

  518. pulling us

  519. friends I wonder

  520. here's some

  521. hot questions

  522. for you.

  523. What new

  524. step of obedience

  525. is God the

  526. Holy Spirit

  527. calling you

  528. to make

  529. today?

  530. You know

  531. is there a

  532. sin that you

  533. are making

  534. peace with

  535. in your heart?

  536. That you're

  537. allowing a

  538. foot in

  539. the door?

  540. What is it

  541. that God

  542. is calling you

  543. out of his

  544. grace,

  545. out of his

  546. mercy to

  547. see and

  548. to kill?

  549. Have you

  550. ever prayed

  551. and this is

  552. a scary

  553. prayer

  554. Lord show

  555. me the

  556. hidden bits

  557. of my

  558. heart

  559. and expose

  560. them

  561. even the

  562. bits that

  563. I'm not

  564. even aware

  565. exist.

  566. And if that

  567. battle rages

  568. in your

  569. heart

  570. be encouraged

  571. that the

  572. presence of

  573. the spirit

  574. creates the

  575. conflict.

  576. You know I

  577. used to think

  578. of it like

  579. this, I

  580. used to play

  581. a lot of

  582. football when

  583. I was

  584. younger.

  585. I'm growing

  586. up in the

  587. west of

  588. Scotland.

  589. we didn't

  590. play on

  591. grass pitches,

  592. we didn't

  593. play on

  594. 4G pitches,

  595. we didn't

  596. play on

  597. 3G pitches,

  598. we didn't

  599. play in

  600. concrete,

  601. but we

  602. played on

  603. something much

  604. worse.

  605. If you

  606. remember this,

  607. if you're

  608. certain vintage,

  609. we played

  610. on this

  611. thing called

  612. ash.

  613. Ash is

  614. just gravel,

  615. red gravel.

  616. And the

  617. thing about

  618. ash is it

  619. completely

  620. wrecked my

  621. knees.

  622. Right?

  623. Every time

  624. you'd fall

  625. on this

  626. ash, it

  627. would just

  628. cut your

  629. knees open.

  630. And so what

  631. I would do

  632. is I would

  633. go home

  634. after every

  635. game and

  636. mum would

  637. get out

  638. the scrubbing

  639. brush and

  640. she would

  641. just scrub

  642. away until

  643. getting most

  644. of the dirt

  645. out.

  646. And then

  647. finally when

  648. she called

  649. it quit,

  650. she whacked

  651. on top of

  652. this cut

  653. pseudocreme.

  654. And boy

  655. did it

  656. sting.

  657. Every time

  658. it stung.

  659. But what

  660. I soon found

  661. out was

  662. true that

  663. the sting

  664. was a sign

  665. in my head

  666. that the

  667. good stuff

  668. was trying

  669. to attack

  670. the bad

  671. stuff.

  672. Yeah?

  673. So the

  674. sting

  675. was a sign

  676. that the

  677. good stuff

  678. was trying

  679. to go

  680. at the

  681. bad

  682. stuff.

  683. And so

  684. here's what

  685. that means.

  686. Friends,

  687. if you feel

  688. yourself in

  689. a fight,

  690. if you feel

  691. like the

  692. Christian life

  693. is tough,

  694. if you feel

  695. like there's

  696. a tug of

  697. war going

  698. on,

  699. that is not

  700. a sign of

  701. failure.

  702. that is a

  703. sign of

  704. faith.

  705. Or if you

  706. want to

  707. quote verse

  708. 14 there,

  709. that you

  710. feel the

  711. battle is

  712. proof that

  713. you are a

  714. son and

  715. daughter of

  716. God.

  717. Because if

  718. you weren't,

  719. if the

  720. spirit wasn't

  721. present,

  722. you wouldn't

  723. care.

  724. Let me try

  725. and put this

  726. another way,

  727. friends.

  728. What is going

  729. to transform

  730. Rome?

  731. There's a big

  732. question.

  733. What's going

  734. to transform

  735. Rome?

  736. this letter

  737. written to

  738. Roman believers

  739. living in the

  740. heart, the

  741. motherland of

  742. the empire.

  743. What is going

  744. to transform

  745. Rome?

  746. Where you

  747. are encouraged

  748. to let your

  749. passions run

  750. wild?

  751. Where might

  752. is right?

  753. Where people

  754. are disposable

  755. according to

  756. human wants?

  757. Where society

  758. is based on

  759. where you

  760. were born and

  761. exist in the

  762. ranking system?

  763. What is going

  764. to transform

  765. society?

  766. I take it

  767. it is individual

  768. people coming

  769. to know Jesus

  770. and putting to

  771. death the deeds

  772. of the body.

  773. In other words,

  774. it is only dead

  775. fish who go with

  776. the flow.

  777. How do you

  778. spot a living

  779. fish?

  780. It is going

  781. against the

  782. current.

  783. Students,

  784. if you are here

  785. today, you want

  786. to be revolutionary

  787. amongst your

  788. peers.

  789. You want to

  790. stand out.

  791. I take it that

  792. is a wonderful

  793. thing.

  794. Can I encourage

  795. you from this

  796. passage not to

  797. think protests

  798. and marches

  799. primarily?

  800. Think putting

  801. to death the

  802. deeds of the

  803. body.

  804. Think the

  805. fruit of the

  806. Spirit.

  807. How much are

  808. you going to

  809. stand out if

  810. people look at

  811. your life and

  812. they see growing

  813. inside of you,

  814. and this is what

  815. the Spirit produces

  816. in our lives,

  817. love, joy,

  818. peace,

  819. patience,

  820. kindness,

  821. goodness,

  822. faithfulness,

  823. gentleness,

  824. and self-control.

  825. Nine words.

  826. I cannot think of

  827. nine words that

  828. are more different

  829. from the social

  830. media age in

  831. which we live.

  832. You want to

  833. stand out at

  834. uni,

  835. you want those

  836. around you to

  837. sit up and

  838. take notice,

  839. live lives

  840. where people can

  841. see that you are

  842. putting to death

  843. the deeds of the

  844. body.

  845. Can I just say

  846. as well,

  847. this is what I

  848. found in five

  849. years when I

  850. was at Aberdeen

  851. University.

  852. There is never

  853. a better week to

  854. do it to nail

  855. your colours to

  856. the mast than

  857. in the first

  858. week.

  859. Yeah, we'll be

  860. praying for you

  861. the first chance

  862. that you get to

  863. be different from

  864. the world around

  865. about you,

  866. take it.

  867. It means saying

  868. no to drink,

  869. it means saying

  870. no to sex,

  871. it means saying

  872. no to drugs.

  873. Take the

  874. opportunity to be

  875. different from

  876. Jesus.

  877. We always say

  878. here at the

  879. church we want

  880. to be walking

  881. question marks in

  882. this world in

  883. which we live.

  884. What is it that

  885. makes those

  886. people tick?

  887. Paul wants

  888. these Christians

  889. to be people

  890. who bear the

  891. family likeness.

  892. And secondly,

  893. he wants them

  894. to be people

  895. who know the

  896. Father's nearness.

  897. And this will

  898. be a lot quicker,

  899. but it is

  900. incredible.

  901. Do you see

  902. verse 15?

  903. What does Paul

  904. not want the

  905. believer to fall

  906. back into?

  907. The word

  908. beginning with

  909. death?

  910. It's fear.

  911. Now, I've

  912. been asking

  913. myself all

  914. week, why

  915. would you

  916. fear?

  917. The word

  918. fall back

  919. there, I

  920. think, is

  921. the clue.

  922. I think it's

  923. falling back

  924. into an old

  925. way of thinking

  926. about God.

  927. Because sometimes,

  928. and I know this

  929. is true in my

  930. life, we're

  931. tempted to think

  932. when we get it

  933. wrong, when we

  934. stumble, when we

  935. doubt, when we're

  936. weary, that God

  937. somehow changed

  938. his mind on

  939. us.

  940. Like he saved

  941. us, and like

  942. you would in

  943. your work, any

  944. job you can go

  945. into, he saved

  946. us and he's put

  947. us on probationary

  948. period.

  949. We'll give it six

  950. months and we'll

  951. see how this

  952. salvation thing

  953. turns out.

  954. For the Spirit

  955. leads us to

  956. relate to God

  957. as a Father

  958. who we can

  959. trust, rather

  960. than a God

  961. that we are

  962. fearful of.

  963. And this is so

  964. important why we

  965. don't base our

  966. faith on our

  967. feelings.

  968. Because our

  969. feelings go up

  970. and down all

  971. the time.

  972. And this is

  973. true on your

  974. best day, this

  975. is true on your

  976. worst day.

  977. That this is how

  978. God wants to

  979. relate to us.

  980. Formally, before

  981. we came to know

  982. this God, because

  983. of our sin, we

  984. were in fear of

  985. judgment.

  986. And we want to

  987. be clear that there

  988. is coming a day

  989. of judgment for

  990. every single human

  991. being who's lived.

  992. We'll have to give

  993. an account for our

  994. lives before the

  995. holy God who made

  996. us.

  997. But if you're a

  998. Christian here today,

  999. what this is telling

  1000. you is that your

  1001. judgment day happened

  1002. 2,000 years ago on

  1003. an old wooden cross

  1004. outside Jerusalem.

  1005. And Jesus knew

  1006. exactly what he was

  1007. doing when he died

1008. for your sin on the

  1009. cross.

  1010. Jesus doesn't offer

  1011. us there a matching

  1012. grant.

  1013. You know those

  1014. things?

  1015. People say, I'll put

1016. up the first 50% of

  1017. the funds and I

1018. kind of leave it to

  1019. you to find the

  1020. rest.

  1021. It's not how

  1022. salvation works.

  1023. The number is not

  1024. 50.

  1025. The number is 100.

1026. He took all of our

  1027. sin on the cross.

  1028. And what that means

  1029. is that God the

  1030. Father loves Jesus

  1031. with fatherly love

  1032. because Jesus is his

  1033. son by nature.

  1034. It means that God

  1035. the Father loves you

1036. and I with the same

  1037. fatherly love because

1038. we are his sons and

  1039. daughters by adoption.

  1040. God loves us exactly

1041. how he loves his son

  1042. because our lives are

  1043. united to his son.

  1044. Right?

  1045. And I know that's

  1046. stretching us a little

  1047. bit but it's so

  1048. profound.

  1049. It transformed my

  1050. Christian life when I

  1051. understood that.

  1052. I'm not right before

  1053. this God because of

  1054. how I act and how I

  1055. am.

1056. I'm loved by this God

1057. way more than I could

  1058. possibly imagine

  1059. because Jesus has

  1060. died and brought me

  1061. to himself.

  1062. And he'll never change

  1063. his mind on us.

  1064. You know there's a

  1065. woman called Faith

  1066. Chang.

  1067. She wrote a book

  1068. called Peace Over

  1069. Perfection and I hope

1070. you can see that with

  1071. the contrast.

1072. If not, come and I'll

1073. let, I can give you

1074. the book and you can

  1075. read it yourself.

  1076. But she says this,

  1077. okay.

1078. If drawing near to God

1079. is the goal, maybe we

1080. can aim to return to

  1081. him a little quicker

1082. when we fall instead of

  1083. staying away because we're

  1084. not yet perfect.

  1085. Do you feel that?

1086. I often assume that God

1087. is just as impatient with

1088. me as I am with myself.

1089. But he is not like me

1090. and I greatly need his

  1091. lengthening perspective.

  1092. It's incredible.

  1093. I loved that quote when I

  1094. read it.

1095. God is not like me.

1096. His patience is so much

  1097. greater.

1098. His knowledge is so much

  1099. greater.

1100. His love is so much

  1101. deeper.

1102. Let me just really quick

1103. and the time we have

1104. left pick out two words

  1105. that Paul uses here.

  1106. Verse 15.

  1107. What does that mean?

1108. How can we come before

  1109. this God?

1110. Do you see the word Paul

1111. uses there is not say

  1112. or declare?

1113. It is the word cry.

1114. Now that is a really

  1115. painful word when you

  1116. look at the original.

1117. And when Paul quotes there

  1118. Abba Father, he's picked

  1119. that phrase deliberately

1120. because that is the phrase

1121. that Jesus cried on his

  1122. darkest hour.

1123. On the eve of his death

1124. on the cross as the sheer

1125. terror of what is ahead

  1126. of him overwhelms his

  1127. soul.

  1128. He says Abba Father

1129. in that cry of pain.

1130. And so this means as it

1131. were that we can pray

1132. through the lips of Jesus

  1133. when we find ourselves

  1134. particularly in those

  1135. dark times.

1136. When we are in the depths

  1137. of despair.

1138. When the only words that we

1139. can possibly muster up are

1140. the cry of a child

  1141. screaming for help

1142. with nowhere else to go

  1143. but to dad.

  1144. Even then and maybe

  1145. especially then

1146. we can pray through the

1147. lips of Jesus and say

  1148. Father.

1149. And so next time you pray

  1150. we pray let's remember

1151. that through Jesus we have

  1152. the Father's undivided

  1153. attention.

  1154. Remember when I was

  1155. grappling with this when

  1156. I was young I used to

  1157. picture God with a

  1158. massive ear bending

  1159. down.

1160. He listens, he cares, he

  1161. knows, he loves.

1162. As we see next week he's

  1163. working all things

  1164. together for the good.

1165. And that means that we

1166. can pray with rock solid

  1167. confidence when we come

1168. before this God and we

1169. can do it every time.

  1170. Second word real quick

1171. see that word air right

1172. at the end of verse 17.

  1173. If we're thinking more

1174. about this next week we

1175. just want to try and set

  1176. us up.

1177. Do the spike before the

  1178. dig.

  1179. Can't remember what it

  1180. is.

  1181. Anyway.

  1182. Everything that Jesus

1183. stands to inherit will be

  1184. ours by right.

1185. A child inherits not based

  1186. on their performance.

1187. A child inherits because of

  1188. their family name.

  1189. God's life.

1190. And the shape of the

  1191. life of Jesus.

1192. Trust in God and the

  1193. hardships and the

  1194. roller coaster of life

1195. now leading to glory with

  1196. God then.

1197. That is to be the shape of

  1198. our lives too.

  1199. Everything that the son

1200. stands to inherit will be

  1201. ours.

1202. We'll think more about that

  1203. next week.

1204. But this is the identity

1205. that this God has so

  1206. graciously and kindly

1207. written all over our lives.

  1208. It's what he does.

1209. He brings newness of life.

  1210. He brings forgiveness.

  1211. He transforms people who

  1212. were spiritual orphans and

  1213. makes them spiritual sons.

1214. Now just as we close and I

1215. thought of this dear friend

  1216. of mine recently.

  1217. I think this is a wonderful

  1218. application of this.

  1219. I've got a good friend who's

1220. got a tattoo on the top of

  1221. his left arm.

1222. And this is his story.

1223. They say every tattoo's got

  1224. a story, right?

  1225. This is his story.

1226. He grows up in a Christian

  1227. family.

1228. He goes to university when

  1229. he leaves home.

1230. And in his own words he

1231. drifts from the things of

  1232. Jesus.

1233. And part of this phase of

1234. his life he goes on this

1235. rugby tour to a place called

1236. Loret de Mar near Barcelona

1237. if you've ever been there.

  1238. It's a nice place.

1239. He gets caught up in the

1240. spirit of the tour to the

1241. extent that he goes to a

1242. tattoo parlor and he gets a

1243. tattoo of the rugby club on

  1244. his arm.

1245. And one of those things

1246. that's good in the moment

1247. and then when you wake up

1248. the next day you think I'm

1249. living with that for the

  1250. rest of my life.

1251. And years later with this

1252. tattoo still on his arm,

1253. years later he comes back to

  1254. Jesus.

1255. And in response he goes to

1256. another tattoo artist and he

1257. says I want another tattoo

  1258. but I don't want a tattoo on a

1259. different place on my body.

1260. What I want you to do is I

1261. want you to, the tattoo that

  1262. I've got, I want you to

1263. transform it into a collage of

  1264. Psalm 23.

1265. So they plan it together and

1266. they come up with this image

1267. and so on top of these

1268. initials of the rugby club is

1269. transformed into a collage of

  1270. Psalm 23.

1271. That verse, even through the

1272. darkest valley you will be with

  1273. me.

1274. The Lord is my shepherd.

1275. And it was his way of saying

1276. that what God has done for me

1277. has covered all my shame and

  1278. regrets, all my foolishness,

  1279. all my mistakes.

1280. This God has transformed my

  1281. story.

1282. This God has written his story

1283. of grace over all of my life.

1284. And instead of thinking I was

1285. the head honcho of my life, I

1286. now see that he is my loving

1287. shepherd and I want to follow

  1288. him.

1289. And that's what this God does.

  1290. It's what he does.

1291. He takes the messy lives of

1292. sinful people living in a broken

  1293. world like us.

1294. And because of the death and

1295. the resurrection of his son, he

  1296. forgives us.

  1297. He accepts us.

1298. He welcomes us into his family.

1299. He makes us sons and daughters.

1300. And he promises us to bring us

1301. into his heavenly home and

  1302. shower that fatherly kindness

1303. upon us for all eternity.

1304. Friends, if you do not know this

1305. God for yourself, may today be the

1306. day when you put your trust in his

1307. son and come to have life in him.

1308. Why don't we just be quiet for a

1309. minute and then I'll pray.

1310. Just use this opportunity before

1311. everything gets noisy and busy

  1312. again.

1313. Bring your cries and your mistakes

1314. and everything that's going on in

1315. your life to this God.

1316. And know the forgiveness and the

1317. newness of life that's found in

  1318. Jesus.

1319. And so Father, as your word has gone

1320. forth today, I pray that your spirit

1321. would take these truths and apply

1322. them deep into our hearts.

1323. Like the master farmer, just doing the

1324. work that's needed in the soil.

1325. Lord, I pray that you would be in our

  1326. own individual circumstances.

1327. Lord, if there is stuff that we need to

1328. realize today, would you bring a fresh

1329. realization of who we are?

1330. Lord, if there's stuff that we need to

1331. sever today to put to death, Lord, I

1332. pray that you would be bringing a

  1333. convicting knowledge of that.

1334. But Father, most of all, I pray that you

1335. would help us to grasp something more

  1336. today.

1337. In all of our different generations, in

1338. all of our different life circumstances,

1339. that together we have been declared sons

1340. and daughters of you, the living God.

1341. Father, thank you that you are the God who

1342. is bigger than our mistakes.

1343. Thank you that Christ on the cross, he

1344. absorbed the judgment that was deserved

  1345. for us.

1346. And thank you now that we are the

1347. beneficiaries of fatherly love and

  1348. perfect care.

1349. So Lord, be with us now as we close our

  1350. time as we sing.

1351. May these truths just resonate in our

1352. hearts and in our minds.

1353. Father, be with us as we close.

1354. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1355. Amen.
