  1. Thanks very much, Julia. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Can I repeat the welcome was given at the beginning?

  3. And can I perhaps particularly welcome those who've joined us on live stream

  4. or watching video later or listening to the audio recording?

  5. I've got a reason for doing that this morning.

  6. As Kate had told us earlier, the funeral service for Donald McMillan is this Thursday.

  7. Most of you, I'm aware, have never met Donald,

  8. but he'd been a member of our church family since the 1930s,

  9. since before the Second World War.

  10. He was an elder of the church for more than 30 years,

  11. and for most of that time, he also was chairman of the elders' meetings.

  12. But I will remember Donald particularly as someone who served humbly and faithfully.

  13. If there was something to be done and he could do it,

  14. Donald would do it without fuss, often unseen by everyone except God.

  15. He was a wonderful role model, particularly to my generation.

  16. Donald hasn't been able to be with us for the last few years,

  17. except very occasionally at the breaking of bread on Sunday morning.

  18. There was COVID, then his wife Audrey was very ill,

  19. and Donald himself has been very unwell.

  20. But Donald watched this service every Sunday morning,

  21. and he liked to talk about it.

  22. It kept him in touch with the church.

  23. It made him feel still part of the church family,

  24. that he could worship with us and that he could learn with us.

  25. So this morning, a big thank you to those who make that possible,

  26. for those who do the video recordings.

  27. And as I said, a particularly welcome to those who are not able to be with us,

  28. but are watching us online.

  29. Now we're looking today at 2 Corinthians chapter 3.

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  30. It's quite a difficult chapter,

  31. so I want to do a few things before we get into the passage,

  32. just to help us to understand what it's about.

  33. I want to begin with a story.

  34. It's a story you may be familiar with,

  35. but I think it will help you to see where we are going this morning.

  36. In the village of Boya in Spain,

  37. in 1930, a local artist called Elias Garcia Martinez

  38. painted a picture on the wall of Jesus,

  39. the image of Jesus in a crown of thorns.

  40. The title is Echihomo.

  41. Oh, it was Jesus before Pilate.

  42. Over the years, this painting deteriorated.

  43. And particularly because they had quite bad damp on the walls of the church,

  44. eventually it really became quite bad.

  45. And there were processes in place to get it restored

  46. when a local woman decided she would do it herself.

  47. An 81-year-old woman called Cecilia Gimenez.

  48. She decided that she would do the restoration.

  49. And this is the bit you may remember having seen in the past.

  50. It turned out really badly.

  51. There is a good happy ending to the story

  52. because this painting and the church became a tourist attraction

  53. and it raised quite a lot of money for the church and the local economy.

  54. But what I think that illustrates to us

  55. is if you've got an image

  56. and you're trying to restore it to its former glory,

  57. you need the right person doing it.

  58. If it's the wrong person, it's liable to turn out really badly.

  59. And that's really what this passage today is about.

  60. We're leading up to the end, verse 18,

  61. where it talks about the image of God.

  62. Now, right back at the beginning in Genesis,

  63. when God created humans,

  64. he made them in his image.

  65. But that image has been marred by our sin

  66. to the point of being in many ways almost unrecognizable.

  67. And over the time in the Old Testament,

  68. in the law given through Moses,

  69. the people who tried to keep that law,

  70. they couldn't do it.

  71. Because of their sin,

  72. they couldn't restore themselves to be in the image of God.

  73. And Paul says in this chapter,

  74. and we'll come to it right at the end,

  75. that we are restored into the image of God.

  76. We are being conformed more and more

  77. to the image of God

  78. through the work of the Holy Spirit

  79. and through focusing our attention

  80. on the Lord Jesus

  81. and thinking about him.

  82. So the image can be restored,

  83. but it can't be done by our own efforts.

  84. It can only be done through God's Spirit.

  85. So that's where we're going.

  86. Before we get into the passage in detail,

  87. let me also give you a couple of keys

  88. to help us understand it,

  89. to open up the passage for us.

  90. And the first key is Paul's purpose.

  91. If you get any passage in the Bible,

  92. it's good to think,

  93. well, why was this passage written?

  94. What is the point of it?

  95. And Paul's purpose in writing

  96. basically most of the book of 2 Corinthians,

  97. but certainly the early chapters,

  98. was to counter some people

  99. who had come along

  100. and who were trying to do him down.

  101. Now, Graham's presented that to us

  102. over the last few weeks.

  103. People were coming and saying,

  104. well, Paul is not really committed to the churches.

  105. He keeps changing his mind.

  106. He's not really that good a messenger for God.

  107. And we have that continuing in this passage.

  108. The people who had come

  109. were by and large peddling Jewish traditions.

  110. They were trying to get people

  111. to go back to the law.

  112. They were presenting themselves

  113. as people who had mystical experiences.

  114. And they were expecting the church

  115. to give them money

  116. to pay them for what they did.

  117. And they looked at Paul with some disdain.

  118. I like the description

  119. that Jonathan Lamb gave of this.

  120. He said they viewed Paul

  121. as little more than a clown,

  122. a manual worker,

  123. an amateur speaker,

  124. a buffoon who didn't even charge

  125. for his services.

  126. And these people had come into the church

  127. and they were putting Paul down.

  128. And he wants to defend himself.

  129. But perhaps more significantly,

  130. they were also denying Paul's teaching.

  131. They were saying it's not enough,

  132. as Paul says,

  133. to have faith in Jesus

  134. and to be forgiven by God.

  135. You've got to obey the Old Testament law.

  136. You've got to do things

  137. to earn God's favour.

  138. They were trying to impose

  139. Jewish regulations

  140. and Jewish practices

  141. on top of the gospel

  142. that Paul preached.

  143. And Paul is countering

  144. these people in this chapter.

  145. The first six verses,

  146. largely about his credentials.

  147. The remaining verses of the chapter,

  148. and indeed through into chapters

  149. four and five and beyond,

  150. are a defence of his teaching

  151. and a presentation

  152. of how more glorious

  153. the message of the gospel of Jesus

  154. is than anything

  155. that is in the Old Testament.

  156. So that's key one,

  157. Paul's purpose.

  158. The second key is that in this chapter,

  159. Paul draws some parallels.

  160. He takes things from the Old Testament

  161. and he compares them

  162. with what is happening now

  163. with his ministry.

  164. And he does that, I think,

  165. in two main ways.

  166. He compares himself and Moses,

  167. not overtly in some ways,

  168. but it definitely is there

  169. in the passage.

  170. Moses was the messenger

  171. of the Old Covenant,

  172. of the law that God gave

  173. the people on Sinai.

  174. He chose to communicate it

  175. through Moses,

  176. giving him the tablets

  177. and Moses would go in

  178. and meet with God

  179. and come out

  180. and talk with the people.

  181. Paul says that he also

  182. is a messenger

  183. of a covenant,

  184. that he is bringing

  185. the people God's new covenant.

  186. Today, Corinthians first learned

  187. the gospel message from Paul

  188. and so he was the messenger

  189. of God's new covenant

  190. through Jesus.

  191. And if the people

  192. who had come into church

  193. were accusing Paul

  194. of incompetence,

  195. then Paul says,

  196. yes, I would be incompetent,

  197. but I've been made competent

  198. through the Lord Jesus.

  199. So Paul can present

  200. God's message

  201. and does it,

  202. unlike Moses,

  203. he does it without

  204. in any way hiding

  205. the God's glory.

  206. Then the second bit

  207. of the parallels

  208. is between the letter

  209. and the Spirit.

  210. In other words,

  211. the Old Testament,

  212. God said to his people,

  213. here is a list of things

  214. you have to do.

  215. If you do these things

  216. perfectly,

  217. you will be justified

  218. before me.

  219. And in practice,

  220. no one could do it.

  221. So Paul said,

  222. the letter of the law,

  223. that just brought death.

  224. And the parallel now,

  225. Paul says,

  226. is that under the new covenant

  227. that God is bringing,

  228. it comes through the Spirit

  229. and does not depend

  230. on our efforts,

  231. we have the Spirit

  232. of God in us,

  233. revitalizing us,

  234. giving us life

  235. and enabling us

  236. to serve God.

  237. So bear these two

  238. keys in mind

  239. as we go through.

  240. I think they do help us

  241. to understand

  242. the passage.

  243. But let's get into it now.

  244. I've divided it

  245. into four sections

  246. and each of these sections

  247. is based around

  248. something that Paul tells us

  249. about the Holy Spirit.

  250. The Holy Spirit,

  251. of course,

  252. is part of the Trinity,

  253. Father, Son,

  254. and Holy Spirit,

  255. that great mystery

  256. and yet that wonderful truth

  257. that there is one God

  258. in three persons.

  259. And the Holy Spirit

  260. is the person

  261. who is with us

  262. and can help us

  263. in our lives now.

  264. So we're going to look first

  265. at the transforming spirit

  266. and that's in verses

  267. one to three.

  268. Paul's being accused

  269. of boasting

  270. about himself

  271. without any

  272. corroborating testimony.

  273. The people

  274. who had come into the church

  275. had come with letters

  276. of recommendation.

  277. Perhaps from the Jewish

  278. leader or something

  279. like that.

  280. They come with letters

  281. that says,

  282. these are people

  283. you should listen to.

  284. They're going to tell you

  285. what you need to know.

  286. And they were saying,

  287. look at Paul.

  288. He didn't have anything

  289. like that.

  290. He just came

  291. and he preached

  292. and there was no one

  293. behind him.

  294. There was no one

  295. giving him a recommendation

  296. to you.

  297. Now letters of recommendation

  298. were very common

  299. in those days.

  300. Perhaps less common

  301. now in churches

  302. although I think

  303. they could be used

  304. a lot more than they are.

  305. If someone moves

  306. from one city

  307. to another,

  308. for example,

  309. quite good if their

  310. old church

  311. could communicate

  312. with their new church

  313. and let them know

  314. how they have served

  315. and been part

  316. of the fellowship.

  317. But Paul didn't believe

  318. he needed something

  319. written down on paper

  320. as a letter of commendation

  321. or recommendation

  322. to the Corinthians.

  323. Paul said,

  324. my letter of recommendation

  325. is written on the heart.

  326. It's not something

  327. that's written

  328. with pen on paper.

  329. It's written by the Spirit

  330. on heart.

  331. In other words,

  332. what Paul is saying

  333. is that the Corinthians

  334. were his letter

  335. of recommendation

  336. because their lives

  337. and their hearts

  338. had been transformed

  339. by God's Holy Spirit.

  340. If we went back

  341. and read in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  342. chapter 6,

  343. Paul described

  344. what many of the Corinthians

  345. were like

  346. before they became Christians.

  347. He says

  348. they were sexually immoral,

  349. they were idolaters,

  350. they were drunkers,

  351. they were swindlers

  352. and a whole lot more

  353. besides.

  354. They weren't

  355. what you might call

  356. good people.

  357. And yet,

  358. through the gospel

  359. that Paul preached,

  360. the gospel of the Lord Jesus,

  361. through the transforming power

  362. of the Holy Spirit,

  363. the Corinthians

  364. had been changed.

  365. Not that they were perfect,

  366. you correctly pick that up

  367. if you go through

  368. 1 and 2 Corinthians,

  369. but they had been changed

  370. from what they were

  371. and they were still being changed

  372. by the Holy Spirit.

  373. And by questioning

  374. Paul's credentials,

  375. actually they were questioning

  376. their own salvation

  377. because what Paul

  378. had brought them

  379. was the message

  380. that had changed

  381. their lives

  382. as they came to faith

  383. in the Lord Jesus.

  384. He didn't need

  385. a letter of recommendation

  386. because the Corinthian

  387. Christians themselves

  388. were his recommendation.

  389. I have to take a pause there

  390. and we'll ask this question

  391. again at the end

  392. of the service.

  393. If your life

  394. was a letter

  395. that people could read,

  396. what would it say?

  397. What would they read about it?

  398. It's about your faith,

  399. about your love for Jesus,

  400. about what he has done

  401. in your life.

  402. We'll come back to that

  403. at the end

  404. in the questions,

  405. but just leave that

  406. to think about

  407. and to mull over

  408. for a while.

  409. Let's move on though

  410. into the second part

  411. of the passage

  412. and I've called this

  413. the life-giving spirit.

  414. It's verses 4 to 6

  415. of the passage.

  416. Paul is writing

  417. with confidence.

  418. And he says

  419. in that confidence

  420. it's not a kind

  421. of spiritual one-upmanship,

  422. I'm better than you.

  423. Rather it is

  424. because he's been

  425. made competent

  426. to be a minister

  427. of the gospel

  428. through the spirit

  429. of God.

  430. In verse 3

  431. he talks about

  432. tablets of stone

  433. that were given

  434. to Moses.

  435. Verse 6

  436. he talks about

  437. the letter of the law

  438. and the life

  439. that comes

  440. through the spirit.

  441. So Paul says

  442. the letter of the law

  443. brings death

  444. but the spirit

  445. brings life.

  446. The old covenant,

  447. the agreement,

  448. the commitment

  449. that was made

  450. between God

  451. and the people

  452. in Moses' day

  453. was a mutual commitment

  454. where God's requirements

  455. were laid out

  456. in very precise detail

  457. and the people

  458. committed

  459. to obey them.

  460. And then they found

  461. they couldn't.

  462. it was impossible.

  463. The standard

  464. was just too high

  465. and their inability

  466. to keep it

  467. Paul says

  468. led to death.

  469. Contrast that

  470. with the situation now.

  471. Paul says

  472. we have the spirit

  473. now.

  474. We have the Holy Spirit

  475. who is with us

  476. who can lead us

  477. to Christ

  478. and can help us

  479. grow in our faith.

  480. And we're not

  481. dependent

  482. on our own efforts

  483. because if we're

  484. Christians

  485. if we trust

  486. in Jesus

  487. then God

  488. is at work

  489. in our lives

  490. and anything

  491. we achieve

  492. any competence

  493. that we have

  494. we owe to him

  495. and not

  496. to ourselves.

  497. I think that's

  498. another very good

  499. reminder.

  500. We are completely

  501. dependent on God

  502. for any good

  503. that comes

  504. from what we do.

  505. It's an antidote

  506. both to pride

  507. and to discouragement.

  508. Perhaps your experience

  509. has been similar

  510. to mine.

  511. At times

  512. I feel that

  513. I'm doing pretty well

  514. that God is

  515. with me

  516. as I speak

  517. or as I serve

  518. in the church

  519. and I'm tempted

  520. to think

  521. well that's my efforts

  522. I've done really well

  523. I've worked hard

  524. at it.

  525. Other times

  526. things don't go so well

  527. and I get quite discouraged

  528. and think

  529. well am I really

  530. up to the job here

  531. should I be doing

  532. whatever

  533. I'm serving

  534. in.

  535. Both attitudes

  536. are wrong.

  537. If things go well

  538. it is because

  539. God's spirit

  540. is with us

  541. it is empowering us

  542. and is using us.

  543. And if we think

  544. things are going badly

  545. well we don't know.

  546. We may be inadequate

  547. we are inadequate

  548. of ourselves

  549. but God is able

  550. to take

  551. and to use

  552. our failures

  553. and our weakness

  554. and to bless

  555. others

  556. through it.

  557. We are called

  558. to serve

  559. to serve

  560. faithfully

  561. and to serve

  562. in the power

  563. in the strength

  564. that God

  565. gives us.

  566. There's no question

  567. of how we feel

  568. after it

  569. or whether we feel

  570. we've done a good

  571. or a bad job.

  572. The Holy Spirit

  573. is the enabler

  574. he's the life giver

  575. and if there is to be

  576. anything that comes

  577. from our service

  578. for the Lord Jesus

  579. it is through

  580. him.

  581. Okay so that's

  582. the first

  583. part of the passage

  584. where Paul is

  585. defending himself

  586. personally

  587. against the attacks

  588. made against him.

  589. Let's move on

  590. and again we have

  591. two headings

  592. in the second

  593. part of the chapter

  594. which is about

  595. Paul's message

  596. and particularly

  597. the means

  598. by which it comes.

  599. I've called the third

  600. section from verse

  601. 7 to 11

  602. the glorious spirit

  603. and hopefully you can

  604. see that

  605. if you've got it

  606. in front of you.

  607. So we're going back

  608. in the next section

  609. of the passage

  610. to Exodus chapter 34.

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  611. If you get the chance

  612. when you get home

  613. it would be worth

  614. reading Exodus 34.

  615. It very much is

  616. the background

  617. to what's happening

  618. here.

  619. Moses went up

  620. the Mount Sinai.

  621. He went up twice.

  622. The first time

  623. he came down

  624. and the people

  625. had brought a golden

  626. calf and Moses

  627. threw down

  628. the commandments

  629. he'd been given

  630. and the people

  631. suffered God's wrath

  632. for what they'd done.

  633. Moses went back

  634. up again

  635. pleaded for the people

  636. that God would save them.

  637. God in his mercy

  638. relented

  639. and Moses came down

  640. and because he'd been

  641. in the presence of God

  642. when he came down

  643. his face was shining.

  644. So shining

  645. that the people

  646. were afraid

  647. to come to him.

  648. That shows

  649. I think

  650. that Moses

  651. the covenant

  652. that was given

  653. through Moses

  654. the message

  655. that was given

  656. to Moses

  657. was a glorious one.

  658. It's easy for us

  659. to say

  660. well the law

  661. it's gone

  662. it's passed

  663. what really matters

  664. is the gospel

  665. and to an extent

  666. that's true

  667. but we mustn't put down

  668. the law

  669. in the Old Testament.

  670. What God gave

  671. to the Israelites

  672. was glorious.

  673. It was

  674. a representation

  675. of his holiness

  676. and his greatness

  677. and the standards

  678. that he lived to.

  679. Even though

  680. it led to death

  681. Moses' face shone

  682. as he'd been

  683. in the presence

  684. of God

  685. and as he was able

  686. to present something

  687. of the character

  688. of God.

  689. But how much

  690. more glorious

  691. says Paul

  692. is the ministry

  693. of the Spirit.

  694. If the old ministry

  695. if what came

  696. through Moses

  697. just resulted

  698. in death

  699. because people

  700. couldn't do

  701. what they had

  702. to do

  703. how much

  704. more glorious

  705. is the ministry

  706. now

  707. of the Holy Spirit

  708. that gives us

  709. life.

  710. It's also

  711. more glorious

  712. because it brings

  713. righteousness

  714. and not

  715. condemnation.

  716. And here's

  717. the heart

  718. of the Christian

  719. faith.

  720. Paul will

  721. expand on it

  722. in later chapters.

  723. No one

  724. except Jesus

  725. could keep

  726. the law

  727. perfectly.

  728. So everyone

  729. was condemned.

  730. But Jesus

  731. has taken

  732. the punishment

  733. for our sins

  734. so that those

  735. who trust

  736. in him

  737. are made

  738. righteous

  739. and we can

  740. live more

  741. righteously

  742. by the power

  743. of the Spirit.

  744. So the

  745. ministry

  746. of the Spirit

  747. that brings

  748. justification

  749. and righteousness

  750. is so much

  751. greater than

  752. the ministry

  753. of the law

  754. which condemns

  755. us because

  756. we can't

  757. keep it.

  758. And then

  759. finally in this

  760. section

  761. Paul reminds

  762. us that

  763. the glory

  764. that Moses

  765. had was

  766. temporary

  767. and the glory

  768. of the law

  769. was in that

  770. sense temporary

  771. too.

  772. It's lost

  773. its glory.

  774. A good

  775. analogy I read

  776. was if you

  777. look at the

  778. sun and

  779. the moon.

  780. If you go

  781. at night

  782. in a clear

  783. sky the

  784. moon looks

  785. really bright.

  786. If you go

  787. out again in

  788. daylight and

  789. you see the

  790. sun you

  791. can't even

  792. see the

  793. moon.

  794. The level

  795. of brightness

  796. is so much

  797. greater with

  798. the sun

  799. than the

  800. moon.

  801. God's glory

  802. in the Old

  803. Testament

  804. shone bright.

  805. God's glory

  806. in the New

  807. Testament

  808. shines even

  809. brighter.

  810. So bright

  811. that eclipses

  812. completely

  813. the glory

  814. of the

  815. Old Testament.

  816. As Paul

  817. says,

  818. the letter

  819. kills but

  820. the spirit

  821. gives life.

  822. Let's move

  823. on then and

  824. look at the

  825. final section

  826. from verse

  827. 12.

  828. And I've

  829. called that

  830. the liberating

  831. spirit.

  832. Now again

  833. let me remind

  834. you of

  835. Exodus chapter

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  836. 34.

  837. Israelites

  838. have left

  839. slavery in

  840. Egypt.

  841. They're going

  842. through the

  843. wilderness.

  844. They've been

  845. there for

  846. 40 years.

  847. They're still

  848. fairly early

  849. stages in

  850. that.

  851. Moses goes

  852. up saying

  853. I try to

  854. get the

  855. commandments.

  856. He comes

  857. down the

  858. second time

  859. with a

  860. radiant face

  861. having witnessed

  862. the glory of

  863. God.

  864. And the people

  865. are so terrified

  866. with that that

  867. Moses has to put

  868. a veil on his

  869. face to cover

  870. it.

  871. And Paul

  872. tells us

  873. though the

  874. Old Testament

  875. doesn't that

  876. part of the

  877. purpose of

  878. that veil was

  879. so that people

  880. wouldn't see

  881. that the glory

  882. was fading.

  883. That the

  884. shining of

  885. Moses' face

  886. would gradually

  887. diminish until

  888. he went again

  889. into the

  890. presence of

  891. God, took

  892. the veil off,

  893. his face

  894. again took

  895. on the glory,

  896. the shining

  897. countenance,

  898. he came out

  899. again and

  900. he put the

  901. veil on.

  902. So the

  903. shining represented

  904. the glory of

  905. God, it was

  906. evidence to

  907. the people

  908. that Moses

  909. had been

  910. into the

  911. presence of

  912. God and

  913. that what he

  914. was relaying

  915. back to

  916. them was

  917. what God

  918. had said

  919. to him,

  920. it was the

  921. instructions that

  922. they needed

  923. to obey.

  924. But now,

  925. says Paul,

  926. things are

  927. different.

  928. There is no

  929. need now

  930. for a veil.

  931. There is no

  932. need now to

  933. hide the

  934. glory of

  935. God.

  936. Paul and

  937. his fellow

  938. evangelists,

  939. he says,

  940. we can be

  941. bold.

  942. We can be

  943. confident that

  944. we are able to

  945. go out to the

  946. people and

  947. without veiling

  948. anything to

  949. present to

  950. them God in

  951. all his

  952. fullness,

  953. in all his

  954. greatness,

  955. in the wonder

  956. of what comes

  957. through Jesus.

  958. The glow in

  959. Moses' face

  960. faded just as

  961. the law

  962. faded.

  963. But the

  964. glory of

  965. Christ has

  966. superseded that

  967. and it

  968. will never

  969. fade.

  970. There is no

  971. reason,

  972. says Paul,

  973. to be

  974. bashful about

  975. this.

  976. So in

  977. verse 12,

  978. he says,

  979. we are

  980. very

  981. bold.

  982. In

  983. Romans chapter

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  984. 1,

  985. Paul says,

  986. I'm not

  987. ashamed of

  988. the gospel

  989. because it

  990. is the

  991. power of

  992. God that

  993. brings salvation

  994. to everyone

  995. who believes,

  996. first to the

  997. Jew and

  998. then to

  999. the Gentiles.

  1000. God

  1001. says,

  1002. says Paul,

  1003. there is

  1004. still a

  1005. veil.

  1006. And the

  1007. veil isn't

  1008. on our

  1009. side of

  1010. those who

  1011. are preaching

  1012. the good

  1013. news.

  1014. The veil is

  1015. on the

  1016. hearts of

  1017. the hearers.

  1018. Many

  1019. Jews,

  1020. says Paul,

  1021. are blind.

  1022. Their minds

  1023. have been

  1024. made dull,

  1025. he said.

  1026. They can't

  1027. understand the

  1028. truth of the

  1029. gospel.

  1030. And what

  1031. appears obvious

  1032. to some of

  1033. us as

  1034. Christians in

  1035. the Old

  1036. Testament

  1037. refers to

  1038. Jesus.

  1039. They just

  1040. can't see

  1041. it.

  1042. They're

  1043. still living

  1044. in darkness.

  1045. And of

  1046. course,

  1047. it's not

  1048. just Jews

  1049. who are

  1050. in that

  1051. position.

  1052. So many

  1053. people today

  1054. in our

  1055. society

  1056. who have

  1057. no time

  1058. for the

  1059. Christian

  1060. message,

  1061. for the

  1062. gospel,

  1063. for God

  1064. at all.

  1065. They have

  1066. been blinded.

  1067. They have

  1068. the veil

  1069. over their

  1070. hearts.

  1071. And unless

  1072. that veil

  1073. is removed

  1074. through the

  1075. power of

  1076. the Spirit,

  1077. then it

  1078. will remain.

  1079. But,

  1080. says Paul,

  1081. when we

  1082. turn to

  1083. the Lord,

  1084. when we

  1085. do put

  1086. our trust

  1087. in Jesus,

  1088. the veil

  1089. is removed,

  1090. and we

  1091. can observe

  1092. God's

  1093. glory,

  1094. and we

  1095. can share

  1096. in it.

  1097. And that

  1098. brings us

  1099. to the

  1100. glorious

  1101. climax

  1102. of this

  1103. chapter.

  1104. Now,

  1105. just as a

  1106. point of

  1107. detail,

  1108. when we

  1109. come to

  1110. verses 16

  1111. to 18,

  1112. I think

  1113. when it

  1114. refers to

  1115. the Lord

  1116. there,

  1117. it's not

  1118. specifically

  1119. referring to

  1120. Jesus.

  1121. I think

  1122. in the

  1123. context,

  1124. it is

  1125. the Yahweh

  1126. of the

  1127. Old Testament,

  1128. although

  1129. obviously

  1130. everything

  1131. that we

  1132. have

  1133. is

  1134. through

  1135. Jesus.

  1136. So,

  1137. in verse

  1138. 17,

  1139. Paul says,

  1140. when Moses

  1141. encountered

  1142. the Lord

  1143. in the

  1144. tent of

  1145. meeting,

  1146. we encounter

  1147. him through

  1148. the Spirit.

  1149. And that

  1150. encounters

  1151. liberating

  1152. for us.

  1153. It frees

  1154. us from

  1155. the bondage

  1156. of sin.

  1157. It frees

  1158. us from

  1159. the hardness

  1160. of heart

  1161. that we

  1162. had.

  1163. It frees

  1164. us to

  1165. be obedient

  1166. to God

  1167. through the

  1168. work of

  1169. the Holy

  1170. Spirit.

  1171. And so

  1172. then in

  1173. verse 18,

  1174. Paul says,

  1175. like Moses,

  1176. we can

  1177. view God's

  1178. glory with

  1179. unveiled

  1180. faces.

  1181. Only

  1182. Moses in

  1183. the Old

  1184. Testament,

  1185. in the

  1186. account in

  1187. Exodus,

  1188. only Moses

  1189. could go

  1190. into the

  1191. presence of

  1192. God,

  1193. take the

  1194. veil off,

  1195. and experience

  1196. the glory

  1197. of God.

  1198. When Moses

  1199. came back

  1200. to the

  1201. people,

  1202. they saw

  1203. a little

  1204. bit of

  1205. the

  1206. reflected

  1207. glory,

  1208. but even

  1209. that was

  1210. then hidden

  1211. as the

  1212. veil was

  1213. put on.

  1214. We,

  1215. though,

  1216. have

  1217. unveiled

  1218. faces.

  1219. We,

  1220. if we're

  1221. Christians,

  1222. if we know

  1223. the Lord

  1224. Jesus,

  1225. we can

  1226. gaze on

  1227. him,

  1228. we can

  1229. wonder at

  1230. who he

  1231. is,

  1232. and at

  1233. all that

  1234. he has

  1235. done for

  1236. us,

  1237. and we

  1238. can

  1239. recognize

  1240. and experience

  1241. his glory.

  1242. And as we

  1243. do that,

  1244. says Paul,

  1245. our lives

  1246. are transformed.

  1247. We are

  1248. transformed into

  1249. the image

  1250. of God

  1251. with ever-increasing

  1252. glory.

  1253. That image,

  1254. as I said,

  1255. which was spoiled

  1256. through our sin

  1257. in Genesis

  1258. is now being

  1259. restored

  1260. through the work

  1261. of the Spirit

  1262. and through

  1263. for those

  1264. who have

  1265. faith

  1266. in Jesus.

  1267. And it

  1268. comes about

  1269. as we

  1270. understand

  1271. better

  1272. and as we

  1273. contemplate

  1274. the Lord's

  1275. glory

  1276. and see

  1277. what it

  1278. means to

  1279. be in

  1280. his image.

  1281. How do

  1282. we do

  1283. that?

  1284. Well,

  1285. we moved

  1286. a few

  1287. verses

  1288. to chapter

  1289. four,

  1290. which I think

  1291. Graham will be

  1292. speaking on

  1293. next week.

  1294. Chapter

  1295. four describes

  1296. Jesus

  1297. as the

  1298. image

  1299. of God.

  1300. God

  1301. and we

  1302. are

  1303. transformed

  1304. into the

  1305. image of

  1306. God

  1307. as we

  1308. observe

  1309. the one

  1310. who is

  1311. truly

  1312. the image

  1313. of God

  1314. who is

  1315. God

  1316. with us.

  1317. John says

  1318. in his

  1319. gospel,

  1320. no one

  1321. has ever

  1322. seen

  1323. God,

  1324. but God

  1325. the one

  1326. and only

  1327. Son

  1328. who is

  1329. himself

  1330. God

  1331. and is

  1332. in the

  1333. closest

  1334. relationship

  1335. with the

  1336. Father

  1337. has made

  1338. him

  1339. known.

  1340. Our

  1341. transformation

  1342. begins

  1343. when through

  1344. the prompting

  1345. and leading

  1346. of the Spirit

  1347. opening

  1348. our hearts

  1349. to God's

  1350. word.

  1351. We recognise

  1352. that we

  1353. don't win

  1354. God's favour

  1355. by our

  1356. own efforts,

  1357. by being

  1358. a set of

  1359. rules,

  1360. by living

  1361. in a

  1362. certain way.

  1363. We only

  1364. find God's

  1365. favour

  1366. through faith

  1367. in Jesus

  1368. who died

  1369. on the

  1370. cross

  1371. to take

  1372. our sins

  1373. and make

  1374. us righteous.

  1375. That is

  1376. the beginning

  1377. of the

  1378. transformation.

  1379. The

  1380. transformation

  1381. continues

  1382. as we

  1383. contemplate

  1384. the Lord's

  1385. glory,

  1386. particularly

  1387. as revealed

  1388. in Jesus.

  1389. If we're

  1390. Christians,

  1391. we should

  1392. be spending

  1393. time daily

  1394. with God's

  1395. word,

  1396. we should

  1397. be meditating

  1398. on it,

  1399. we should

  1400. be seeking

  1401. to learn

  1402. more about

  1403. the Lord

  1404. Jesus and

  1405. his life

  1406. and his

  1407. death and

  1408. all that

  1409. he means

  1410. for us.

  1411. And as we

  1412. do that,

  1413. the Spirit

  1414. continues the

  1415. work of

  1416. transformation

  1417. and makes

  1418. us more

  1419. and more

  1420. like

  1421. Jesus.

  1422. And the

  1423. transformation

  1424. will be

  1425. complete

  1426. one day.

  1427. One day

  1428. when we

  1429. go and

  1430. see him

  1431. face to

  1432. face and

  1433. we become

  1434. like him

  1435. in every

  1436. way.

  1437. That's the

  1438. experience of

  1439. these lovely

  1440. fellow Christians

  1441. who have

  1442. recently gone

  1443. to be

  1444. with the

  1445. Lord Jesus.

  1446. They are

  1447. now with

  1448. the Lord

  1449. they love.

  1450. If we

  1451. have our

  1452. trust in

  1453. Jesus,

  1454. then one

  1455. day when

  1456. he returns

  1457. or when

  1458. we pass

  1459. through

  1460. death,

  1461. we will

  1462. go to

  1463. be with

  1464. him

  1465. forever

  1466. and we

  1467. will be

  1468. totally

  1469. transformed.

  1470. We will

  1471. be without

  1472. sin.

  1473. We will

  1474. be like

  1475. Jesus.

  1476. As

  1477. Charles

  1478. Wesley

  1479. put it,

  1480. change

  1481. from glory

  1482. into glory

  1483. till in

  1484. heaven we

  1485. take our

  1486. place,

  1487. till we

  1488. cast our

  1489. crowns

  1490. before thee,

  1491. lost in

  1492. wonder,

  1493. love,

  1494. and praise.

  1495. So to

  1496. conclude this

  1497. morning,

  1498. my challenge

  1499. to you is

  1500. where are

  1501. you on

  1502. that journey

  1503. of being

  1504. transformed

  1505. by Jesus?

  1506. Some of us

  1507. perhaps haven't

  1508. done the

  1509. first step.

  1510. We haven't

  1511. come to

  1512. realise that

  1513. only through

  1514. Jesus is

  1515. there hope.

  1516. That we

  1517. can't do it

  1518. by ourselves.

  1519. Only through

  1520. trusting in

  1521. the saving

  1522. work of

  1523. the Lord

  1524. Jesus and

  1525. dying for

  1526. us on

  1527. the cross

  1528. can we

  1529. be right

  1530. with God.

  1531. If that's

  1532. you,

  1533. please this

  1534. morning consider

  1535. that Christ

  1536. died to

  1537. save you

  1538. and that

  1539. you can

  1540. have peace

  1541. with God

  1542. through him.

  1543. Put your

  1544. trust in

  1545. him.

  1546. Maybe for

  1547. some of

  1548. us that

  1549. work of

  1550. transformation

  1551. seems to

  1552. have stalled

  1553. a bit.

  1554. Yes,

  1555. we're

  1556. Christians,

  1557. yes,

  1558. we've

  1559. come to

  1560. our trust

  1561. in Jesus,

  1562. but actually

  1563. our lives

  1564. aren't really

  1565. progressing

  1566. very much.

  1567. We're just

  1568. static,

  1569. maybe even

  1570. going backwards

  1571. in our

  1572. faith.

  1573. In that

  1574. case,

  1575. the challenge

  1576. is to

  1577. again

  1578. contemplate

  1579. the Lord's

  1580. glory,

  1581. to look

  1582. on Jesus,

  1583. to follow

  1584. his example,

  1585. to trust

  1586. him through

  1587. the Spirit

  1588. to continue

  1589. the process

  1590. that began

  1591. at your

  1592. conversion.

  1593. And for

  1594. all of us,

  1595. wherever we

  1596. are,

  1597. let's lift

  1598. our eyes.

  1599. Let's give

  1600. thanks for

  1601. the glory

  1602. that God

  1603. has revealed

  1604. to us

  1605. through Jesus

  1606. Christ,

  1607. and thanks

  1608. that is

  1609. accessible to

  1610. us and

  1611. come before

  1612. him with

  1613. unveiled

  1614. faces to

  1615. see his

  1616. beauty and

  1617. to be

  1618. changed to

  1619. be like

  1620. him.

  1621. So let's

  1622. pray together.

  1623. As we

  1624. gaze on

  1625. your kingly

  1626. brightness,

  1627. so our

  1628. faces display

  1629. your likeness.

  1630. Ever

  1631. changing from

  1632. glory to

  1633. glory,

  1634. mirrored here,

  1635. may our

  1636. lives tell

  1637. the story.

  1638. Shine on

  1639. me,

  1640. shine on

  1641. me.

  1642. Father,

  1643. we pray that

  1644. indeed you

  1645. will through

  1646. your Spirit

  1647. shine on

  1648. us,

  1649. that we

  1650. may see

  1651. the glorious

  1652. glory to

  1653. the Lord

  1654. Jesus,

  1655. that as

  1656. we do,

  1657. that we

  1658. may be

  1659. transformed

  1660. to be

  1661. more like

  1662. him,

  1663. to be

  1664. in his

  1665. image.

  1666. If we

  1667. have not

  1668. already

  1669. trusted him

  1670. for salvation,

  1671. help us

  1672. to realise

  1673. that the

  1674. only way

  1675. is through

  1676. Jesus,

  1677. not through

  1678. our own

  1679. efforts.

  1680. And if

  1681. we are

  1682. Christians,

  1683. help us

  1684. to grow

  1685. in him,

  1686. to grow

  1687. like him,

  1688. as we

  1689. contemplate

  1690. his

  1691. greatness.

  1692. We thank

  1693. you for

  1694. your presence

  1695. with us

  1696. this morning.

  1697. We pray

  1698. for the

  1699. coming week,

  1700. particularly

  1701. pray for

  1702. the funeral

  1703. service on

  1704. Thursday,

  1705. that that

  1706. will be

  1707. a fitting

  1708. tribute to

  1709. Donald,

  1710. but more

  1711. than that,

  1712. that it

  1713. will bring

  1714. glory to

  1715. the Lord

  1716. Jesus.

  1717. We give

  1718. you thanks

  1719. and ask

  1720. for your

  1721. continued

  1722. blessing.

  1723. In Jesus'

  1724. name.

  1725. Amen.

  1726. Amen.
