  1. Good morning, folks. I feel slightly inadequate this morning because this is an incredible set

  2. of verses that have an enormous amount of truth in them. And as I said, when we spoke at the

  3. 1 John upstairs, I said you could spend a week off Bible teaching meetings and you probably

  4. wouldn't get through the section that we have. And I think it's equally can be said of the verses

  5. that we have before us today. There is so much in the verses that we have today that we are just

  6. going to scratch the surface ever so slightly and hopefully we can just see something of God's

  7. glory in there. Christmas is undoubtedly a wonderful time of year.

  8. You know, over the last, we had a weekend in Vienna and over the last few weeks we've been in and

  9. around Edinburgh and we've seen the twinkling lights and the Christmas markets and the Christmas

  10. jumpers and you think of all the festive goodies that you've eaten, the lively parties that you

  11. might have been to and the joy of exchanging presents. Have you done that already or have

  12. you still to do that? These things all contribute towards the magic of Christmas. And yet, amidst

  13. all that excitement and activity, it's easy to lose sight of the slightly deeper meaning and the

  14. significance of Christmas. Last week, the children offered us that scene in the nativity sketch that

  15. they put on, a poignant reminder that at the heart of Christmas, there is a baby named Jesus.

  16. You know, he is the centre of it all. And as we were imagining in that sketch, if Christmas was a

  17. photograph, then rather than being tucked at the back somewhere in a corner, Jesus is and should be

  18. the front and centre. I don't think it's a new idea to anybody here today. You know, even the simplest

  19. children's Christmas carols that we sing remind us that Jesus came into this world as a baby.

  20. And as we sing the more traditional carols, I think there's further truth that we find that help us just

  21. to consider his birth and what it means for the Son of God to be found as a baby in a manger.

  22. I was smiling as we sung that first song there. I hadn't known the words of the hymns that we're going

  23. to sing this morning. But as we sung through that, I thought that is our message this morning. It is

  24. exactly what is found in these five verses. And not that you might be able to remember that at the

  25. minute, but if you go home and you Google the words of that first hymn there, you'll just be,

  26. you'll smile. You'll get a bit excited. I was sitting on the bench there and I'm quite excited because

  27. even in the breaking of bread that we had upstairs first, the section that Ian read and the way that

  28. this ties together is just incredible. But when you think of the Christmas story, what do you see?

  29. Is it just a serene image of Jesus lying in a manger, surrounded by shepherds and wise men and animals?

  30. You know, that classic, not like Peter's picture with the mistakes, but that classic scene,

  31. which is beautiful and heartwarming. Is that the full story? Is that all that we consider?

  32. Well, John invites us to just look at Christmas in a wider context. I know we haven't necessarily read

  33. it in these four, five verses, but John invites us to look beyond the message and to reflect on what

  34. arguably is the most extraordinary event in human history. In that first verse that we read in verse 14,

  35. we encounter a profound truth that can transform our understanding of Christmas.

  36. And as I've said, as we explore these verses, there is so much in there that we could speak for a week,

  37. but I promise I won't keep you here until the Christmas Eve service on the 24th. John 1.14 starts

  38. like this. It says,

  39. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. This, as I said, is a statement that just

  40. encapsulates the very heart of Christmas. Perhaps you've even seen those words on a card.

  41. Not that many of us send that many cards anymore on a mantelpiece. And again,

  42. we don't have the abundance of mantelpieces anymore, or you've sung them in a carol. Have you really

  43. considered what these words mean? Well, I think this morning we're just going to spend a few minutes

  44. just thinking about that. What does it mean for the Word to become flesh? Craig, a couple of weeks ago,

  45. spoke to us about this. And in the opening verses, in verse 1, John identifies the Word as Jesus.

  46. It said that he existed in the beginning, he was with God, and he was God. Now, I don't tend to be

  47. technical this morning because I don't know any Greek or Hebrew, but we are going to think about a

  48. couple of words this morning because there's a rich meaning in the words that are used. This word,

  49. this word, the word, and you've probably heard this. I'm not going to tell you something that you

  50. haven't heard before, but most of you heard that word logos, which is word, is the word.

  51. That's the Greek word. To a Greek audience, it was this principle of divine reasoning or creative order.

  52. You know, something to the Greeks that was abstract and profound, you know, something that existed

  53. beyond the created world. And to a Jewish audience, it would symbolise God's creative power. You know,

  54. recall Genesis chapter 1, where God spoke creation into being. So for the world at that time, both for

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  55. the Jews and the Greeks, this title referred to God as an eternal creator who existed outside of time

  56. and space and matter. And also that he is the reason for the cosmic order, just the things that

  57. govern the created world. Well, John takes both of these perspectives and he makes this astonishing claim

  58. that this eternal divine word, the creator of all things became flesh.

  59. You know, Jesus,

  60. the eternal one, took on a human body and entered the world that he made.

  61. He wasn't a distant God,

  62. watching from afar. Instead, he becomes one of us, fully divine and yet fully man.

  63. And I know over the years that we have thought about this when, in fact, even just that song that we sang

  64. with the children when we were going through John previously, when we talked about God,

  65. the Lord, he has been fully man and fully God.

  66. And you might ask yourself at Christmas time, why did he do this?

  67. Why would the eternal God

  68. who

  69. existed before time,

  70. who created all things,

  71. why would he

  72. come

  73. in human flesh

  74. and be born as a baby in a manger?

  75. Why would you do that?

  76. Why would you,

  77. if you think of God,

  78. mighty and majestic

  79. and full of

  80. power,

  81. why would you come

  82. and

  83. take on human flesh

  84. and be found

  85. in a manger?

  86. Well, John tells us that.

  87. It is to reveal God's glory.

  88. And I think it's an incredible thing, you know,

  89. just to reveal God's glory

  90. and not only that,

  91. but to fulfill

  92. his redemptive plan

  93. for

  94. humanity.

  95. John writes,

  96. he dwelt

  97. among us.

  98. This is a phrase

  99. that,

  100. again,

  101. both to the

  102. audience of the day

  103. would remember

  104. that that dwelling,

  105. he made his dwelling among us,

  106. would be

  107. a

  108. throwback

  109. to what happened

  110. with the nation of Israel

  111. as they journeyed

  112. through the wilderness

  113. to the promised land.

  114. The Greek word for this,

  115. dwelling,

  116. or dwelt among us,

  117. is that he pitched his tent

  118. or he tabernacled

  119. amongst us.

  120. And as soon as I say that word,

  121. your mind goes back

  122. to the Old Testament

  123. and you see

  124. the tabernacle there

  125. in the wilderness.

  126. You know,

  127. we're transported

  128. to that place

  129. where God's presence

  130. among his people

  131. was in that

  132. structure of

  133. wood and fabric.

  134. you know,

  135. a sacred place

  136. that the national Israel,

  137. that went with

  138. the national Israel

  139. as they journeyed

  140. through that land.

  141. But,

  142. God's presence

  143. is no longer

  144. confined

  145. to a structure

  146. of wood

  147. and fabric

  148. or stone,

  149. you know,

  150. when that was made

  151. into a stone temple.

  152. Instead,

  153. when we come to

  154. this little section here,

  155. we find that

  156. he lives amongst us

  157. in the most

  158. intimate way.

  159. You know,

  160. and that just means

  161. the closeness of God.

  162. We often say this,

  163. that God came near.

  164. But do we really appreciate

  165. how near

  166. God came to us?

  167. Not only did he take on

  168. human flesh,

  169. but he lived amongst us

  170. and

  171. he experienced

  172. everything that we experienced.

  173. He experienced joy

  174. and sorrow,

  175. everything that,

  176. weariness,

  177. you know,

  178. he walked alongside

  179. as one of us.

  180. You know,

  181. this is the wonder

  182. of the incarnation.

  183. Just that,

  184. what we mean by that

  185. is that the eternal

  186. son of God,

  187. the one who created

  188. all things,

  189. would come

  190. into this world,

  191. not as a distant observer,

  192. but as an active

  193. participant.

  194. Now,

  195. consider this,

  196. without a body,

  197. it's more difficult

  198. for us to

  199. relate to God.

  200. It's why the nation

  201. of Israel

  202. and the Old Testament

  203. went astray

  204. so often.

  205. Because their view

  206. of God

  207. and the way

  208. that they're related

  209. to him

  210. is different

  211. to the way

  212. that we see him

  213. now.

  214. You know,

  215. our minds

  216. can only really

  217. think in the

  218. frame of reference

  219. of created things.

  220. What we can touch,

  221. what we see,

  222. what we hear,

  223. what we can smell.

  224. By becoming

  225. human,

  226. Jesus

  227. closes that

  228. gap,

  229. from being

  230. that divine,

  231. eternal spirit

  232. to being something

  233. that we can,

  234. as we have sung,

  235. something that we can

  236. hold in our hands.

  237. And he lived

  238. a perfect life

  239. in that body.

  240. And he offered

  241. that life

  242. as a sacrifice

  243. so that we might

  244. be free

  245. from the judgment

  246. deserved

  247. by our rebellion

  248. against God.

  249. You know,

  250. that's why we,

  251. that's why we

  252. celebrate communion.

  253. salvation.

  254. The bread

  255. and the wine

  256. reminds us

  257. of his body

  258. that is given

  259. for us

  260. and the blood

  261. that is shed

  262. for our salvation.

  263. Jesus took on flesh

  264. so that he could

  265. give that body up

  266. for our redemption.

  267. He had to take

  268. on flesh

  269. to be able

  270. to do that.

  271. And that is just

  272. the most incredible

  273. when you start

  274. to really look

  275. in that

  276. and see it

  277. and just

  278. appreciate

  279. what that means.

  280. I mean,

  281. I got excited

  282. when I was studying

  283. just,

  284. you know,

  285. this first 18 verses

  286. as we've been going

  287. through that

  288. the last few weeks.

  289. There is so much

  290. truth in that.

  291. In fact,

  292. the whole Bible,

  293. you find threads

  294. that come from

  295. the first chapter

  296. here in John

  297. that just run

  298. through the whole Bible.

  299. And that's why

  300. at Christmas time,

  301. we,

  302. it doesn't matter

  303. where you go

  304. in the Bible,

  305. you can find

  306. a thread

  307. that will link us

  308. to Christmas.

  309. But there's no other

  310. section that I'd rather

  311. speak about this morning

  312. than just this

  313. little section here.

  314. You know,

  315. a baby

  316. that was born

  317. in Bethlehem

  318. that was destined

  319. to grow up

  320. and carry the weight

  321. of sin,

  322. of the world's sin

  323. to the cross.

  324. You know,

  325. as he journeys

  326. from that manger

  327. to the cross,

  328. it just underscores

  329. the profound love

  330. and God's commitment

  331. to redeem

  332. his people.

  333. Well,

  334. John goes on

  335. to say,

  336. and we have seen

  337. his glory.

  338. But what does

  339. glory mean

  340. in this context?

  341. You know,

  342. in the Old Testament,

  343. God's glory

  344. was often displayed

  345. in incredible,

  346. awe-inspiring ways.

  347. You know,

  348. you think about

  349. the burning bush

  350. or you think about

  351. the thunderous display

  352. with the cloud

  353. and fire

  354. on the Mount Sinai

  355. with Moses.

  356. Or the radiance.

  357. We've thought about

  358. the tabernacle already,

  359. but off that radiance

  360. that existed within.

  361. In fact,

  362. there was a curtain

  363. that was hung there

  364. because God's glory

  365. was so radiant

  366. that those who,

  367. the curtain was there

  368. to shield people

  369. from that,

  370. otherwise they would

  371. not have survived.

  372. The glory is the

  373. manifestation

  374. that is shown to us

  375. in his majesty

  376. and his power

  377. and holiness

  378. in the Old Testament.

  379. In fact,

  380. when we think about

  381. Moses,

  382. and I was reading

  383. this recently,

  384. when Moses encounters

  385. God's glory,

  386. when he comes down

  387. that mountain,

  388. his face,

  389. and he didn't even

  390. have the full revelation

  391. of God's glory,

  392. he only got a glimpse

  393. of the back

  394. as it passed through

  395. as he was hidden

  396. in that rock

  397. and yet his face

  398. shone so bright

  399. that men were afraid.

  400. In fact,

  401. it tells us in the Old Testament

  402. that Moses had to

  403. veil his face

  404. because it shone

  405. that bright.

  406. This is probably

  407. one of the hardest words

  408. to sometimes get

  409. a head around.

  410. What does the word

  411. glory mean?

  412. Well,

  413. I had a quick look

  414. in the dictionary

  415. and there is so many

  416. things that we can

  417. think about here

  418. but,

  419. and again,

  420. this is a word

  421. that,

  422. you know,

  423. I struggle with English,

  424. right,

  425. but doxa,

  426. which is the word

  427. where we get doxology

  428. and doxology

  429. is just the liturgical

  430. praise of God

  431. but the doxa,

  432. that is the Greek word

  433. for glory

  434. and you see in here

  435. that it covers things

  436. like the abundance

  437. or the wealth

  438. or the treasure

  439. and if somebody

  440. has that

  441. then there is

  442. honour

  443. that is given

  444. to them.

  445. We see that

  446. in the second point

  447. there around

  448. the dignity

  449. and the honour

  450. that is given

  451. to somebody

  452. as,

  453. who we would like

  454. to glorify.

  455. You see there

  456. that it refers

  457. to the splendour

  458. and the brightness

  459. and the majesty

  460. as we've seen

  461. and we,

  462. again,

  463. just pull your mind

  464. back to that

  465. image in the temple

  466. where that radiance

  467. shone so brightly.

  468. And then we come

  469. to point four

  470. in here

  471. and there's

  472. more than this,

  473. it's just a little clip

  474. that I took there

  475. but we think about

  476. the glorious moral attributes

  477. and the infinite

  478. perfections

  479. of God.

  480. It says this,

  481. that Jesus is the brightness

  482. of the Father's glory

  483. in Hebrews chapter one.

  484. You know,

  485. these are just

  486. the attributes

  487. of someone

  488. that invokes praise.

  489. It's the manifestation

  490. of these things

  491. that we've just

  492. thought about.

  493. And sometimes we,

  494. I mean,

  495. I don't really

  496. follow football

  497. but I'm sure

  498. there are some

  499. football fans in here

  500. and you might be called

  501. a glory hunter.

  502. Sometimes we speak

  503. of something

  504. in all its glory

  505. and all its revealed

  506. and everything

  507. that is revealed

  508. about that thing.

  509. You see the full picture.

  510. It's just a manifestation

  511. of all of the

  512. attributes of God.

  513. But when we come

  514. to

  515. the Lord Jesus,

  516. it's not necessarily

  517. speaking about

  518. these awe-inspiring,

  519. majestic,

  520. mighty

  521. revelation

  522. of God's glory.

  523. It takes on

  524. a much more personal,

  525. profound dimension.

  526. You know,

  527. Jesus,

  528. even though

  529. he is majestic,

  530. even though

  531. he is all-powerful

  532. as we see

  533. when he calms

  534. the wind and the waves,

  535. what Jesus

  536. reveals to us

  537. about God

  538. is his character

  539. and his nature.

  540. We go on to read

  541. in our verses

  542. that he was full

  543. of grace and truth

  544. and the witness,

  545. the disciples

  546. got to witness

  547. his first hand

  548. in his teachings,

  549. in his miracles,

  550. in his compassion,

  551. the way that he

  552. dealt with

  553. people,

  554. got to witness

  555. it in his death

  556. and his resurrection.

  557. And each of these

  558. scenes that we see,

  559. especially in the Gospels,

  560. just give us

  561. a glimpse

  562. of the nature

  563. of God.

  564. John describes

  565. the glory

  566. as the glory

  567. of the only one,

  568. of the one and only

  569. son who came

  570. from the Father.

  571. You know,

  572. Jesus is unique

  573. in the fact

  574. that he is

  575. God's eternal

  576. son,

  577. fully divine

  578. and fully man.

  579. And through his life

  580. he shows us

  581. exactly what he's like.

  582. I was thinking

  583. about that verse

  584. just that was

  585. quoted in the

  586. little dictionary

  587. extract in

  588. Hebrews chapter 1

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  589. that says that

  590. the son is the

  591. radiance of the

  592. glory,

  593. of God's glory

  594. and the exact

  595. representation

  596. of his being.

  597. So when we see

  598. Jesus,

  599. everything that we

  600. see about his

  601. being

  602. has just given

  603. us a glimpse

  604. of God's glory.

  605. And remember,

  606. just to try and

  607. summarise that,

  608. the one who was

  609. eternal in spirit

  610. and in a way

  611. unrelatable

  612. takes on

  613. a human body

  614. to become

  615. relatable,

  616. to show us

  617. what God

  618. is like.

  619. And in everything

  620. that you read

  621. in the whole

  622. of the Bible

  623. that talks about

  624. the Lord Jesus,

  625. it just gives us

  626. a glimpse

  627. of who he is

  628. and it gives us

  629. a glimpse

  630. of the glory

  631. of God.

  632. You know,

  633. there are many

  634. things that

  635. show us

  636. God's glory

  637. and I think

  638. the word is

  639. used over

  640. 400 times.

  641. It's actually

  642. used a lot

  643. more than that

  644. but 400 times

  645. roughly and

  646. there's some

  647. words that

  648. would be very

  649. closely linked

  650. but some of

  651. these will

  652. come to mind

  653. and I encourage

  654. you over your

  655. lunch today

  656. or over the

  657. next few days

  658. just recall

  659. some of these

  660. because you'll

  661. just get excited

  662. when you start

  663. to see

  664. just this thread

  665. that goes

  666. through the

  667. whole of

  668. scripture.

  669. Psalm 19

    Psalms 19:1

  670. verse 1

  671. I'm sure

  672. I don't really

  673. need to ask

  674. anybody to

  675. see it

  676. but the heavens

  677. declare the

  678. glory of God

  679. and the sky

  680. proclaims his

  681. handiwork.

  682. You come to

  683. Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6:3

  684. verse 3

  685. and it says

  686. this

  687. holy,

  688. holy,

  689. holy is the

  690. Lord Almighty

  691. the whole earth

  692. is full of

  693. his glory.

  694. You come to

  695. Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  696. and it says

  697. this

  698. for what can be

  699. known about God

  700. is plain to them

  701. because God

  702. has shown it to

  703. them.

  704. For his

  705. invisible

  706. attributes

  707. namely his

  708. eternal power

  709. and divine

  710. nature has

  711. been clearly

  712. perceived ever

  713. since the

  714. creation of

  715. the world

  716. and the things

  717. that have been

  718. made.

  719. So we see it

  720. in creation

  721. but we see it

  722. in man.

  723. We see it in

  724. you and I.

  725. Man was formed

  726. as the highest

  727. creatorial display

  728. of God's glory

  729. and in the

  730. Bible it tells us

  731. that man is the

  732. glory of God.

  733. God's glory of God

  734. but it also

  735. tells us in

  736. Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3:23

  737. verse 23

  738. that we've fallen

  739. short of that

  740. glory and we

  741. aren't the

  742. people who God

  743. created us to

  744. be.

  745. When Jesus

  746. comes in we see

  747. that that glory

  748. is re-established

  749. and for all of

  750. us who believe

  751. in him

  752. and we've been

  753. thinking about

  754. this last week

  755. in the section

  756. that Graham

  757. covered

  758. to all that

  759. believe in

  760. his name

  761. who received

  762. him

  763. who believe

  764. in his name

  765. he gave the

  766. right to

  767. become the

  768. children of

  769. God

  770. and in a

  771. sense

  772. a little bit

  773. of that glory

  774. has been

  775. restored.

  776. In fact

  777. even just in

  778. the gathering

  779. today

  780. it tells us

  781. in scripture

  782. that the glory

  783. of God

  784. is on display

  785. because the

  786. way that God

  787. created us to

  788. be

  789. is displayed

  790. here.

  791. If you're a

  792. believer

  793. if you're a

  794. Christian

  795. if you're one

  796. of God's

  797. children

  798. as we've

  799. read just

  800. in that

  801. last verse

  802. then we

  803. display

  804. God's

  805. glory

  806. and we

  807. do it

  808. in the

  809. way that

  810. we live

  811. in the

  812. ways that

  813. we try

  814. and emulate

  815. the Lord

  816. Jesus

  817. and some

  818. of that

  819. has been

  820. restored.

  821. We're

  822. reminded in

  823. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4:6

  824. 4 verse 6

  825. it says

  826. this

  827. for God

  828. who let

  829. light shine

  830. out of

  831. darkness

  832. has shone

  833. in our

  834. hearts

  835. to give

  836. the light

  837. of the

  838. knowledge

  839. of the

  840. glory of

  841. God

  842. in the

  843. face

  844. of

  845. Jesus

  846. but we

  847. have this

  848. treasure

  849. in jars

  850. of clay

  851. to show

  852. that the

  853. surpassing

  854. power belongs

  855. to God

  856. and not

  857. us

  858. and that

  859. is just a

  860. little bit

  861. of God's

  862. glory that

  863. comes through

  864. us

  865. but it's

  866. just a

  867. faint

  868. picture

  869. in comparison

  870. to what we

  871. see in

  872. the Lord

  873. Jesus.

  874. When we

  875. see the

  876. Lord Jesus

  877. we see

  878. God

  879. his life

  880. his actions

  881. his words

  882. reflect the

  883. heart of

  884. the Father

  885. God

  886. and whether

  887. that's

  888. through

  889. if we

  890. just look

  891. at the

  892. miracles

  893. through the

  894. gospels

  895. you know

  896. whether that's

  897. healing the

  898. sick or

  899. comforting the

  900. broken hearted

  901. or confronting

  902. injustice

  903. Jesus reveals

  904. the very

  905. nature

  906. of God

  907. in a ways

  908. that we can

  909. understand

  910. and that we

  911. can relate

  912. to.

  913. John concludes

  914. this verse by

  915. saying that

  916. Jesus is full

  917. of grace

  918. and truth.

  919. These two

  920. qualities are

  921. at the core

  922. of who

  923. God is

  924. and what

  925. is offered

  926. through the

  927. Lord Jesus.

  928. You know

  929. grace is

  930. God's unmerited

  931. favour to

  932. us.

  933. His love

  934. and his

  935. mercy is

  936. freely given

  937. despite our

  938. rebellion

  939. and our

  940. unworthiness.

  941. You know

  942. I've already

  943. quoted Romans

    Romans 3:23

  944. chapter 3

  945. verse 23

  946. and it says

  947. this

  948. we've all

  949. sinned

  950. and we've

  951. all fallen

  952. short of

  953. that glory.

  954. None of us

  955. could ever

  956. earn God's

  957. favour

  958. through our

  959. own efforts

  960. and yet

  961. through Jesus

  962. grace is

  963. extended as

  964. a gift.

  965. His

  966. sacrificial

  967. death on

  968. the cross

  969. provides the

  970. ultimate

  971. expression of

  972. this.

  973. Offering

  974. salvation to

  975. all who

  976. believe and

  977. that is

  978. something that

  979. we come to

  980. sometimes just

  981. gloss over at

  982. Christmas time.

  983. But again

  984. just to

  985. summarise

  986. a baby was

  987. born in a

  988. body in

  989. order to

  990. die and

  991. the only way

  992. that we

  993. can be

  994. offered

  995. salvation

  996. is in

  997. the death

  998. of the

  999. Lord Jesus.

  1000. You know

  1001. grace means

  1002. that we

  1003. don't have

  1004. to strive

  1005. to earn

  1006. God's

  1007. approval.

  1008. It's not

  1009. about what

  1010. we do

  1011. but it's

  1012. about what

  1013. Christ has

  1014. done.

  1015. There's a

  1016. quote by

  1017. Martin Luther

  1018. and it

  1019. says this

  1020. the law

  1021. says do

  1022. this and

  1023. it's never

  1024. done.

  1025. Grace

  1026. says believe

  1027. this and

  1028. everything is

  1029. already done.

  1030. We're not

  1031. going to spend

  1032. a huge amount

  1033. of time on

  1034. that verse

  1035. that it

  1036. talks about

  1037. that the

  1038. law was

  1039. given through

  1040. Moses and

  1041. grace and

  1042. truth came

  1043. through the

  1044. Lord Jesus.

  1045. We're going

  1046. to focus on

  1047. this grace

  1048. and the

  1049. truth as

  1050. beautiful

  1051. attributes of

  1052. the Lord

  1053. Jesus that

  1054. is on

  1055. display.

  1056. Truth on

  1057. the other

  1058. hand is

  1059. the ultimate

  1060. reality of

  1061. who God

  1062. is.

  1063. In a

  1064. world that

  1065. is full of

  1066. confusion and

  1067. lies and

  1068. shifting values

  1069. grace and

  1070. love.

  1071. He reveals

  1072. God's plan

  1073. for humanity

  1074. and he

  1075. reveals the

  1076. path to a

  1077. relationship

  1078. with him.

  1079. Jesus is

  1080. the embodiment

  1081. of both grace

  1082. and truth as

  1083. we see there in

  1084. the end of

  1085. verse 16.

  1086. It meets us

  1087. in our

  1088. brokenness.

  1089. You know

  1090. grace offers

  1091. us forgiveness

  1092. and hope.

  1093. And truth

  1094. grounds us

  1095. guiding us

  1096. in this

  1097. world.

  1098. And I'm

  1099. sure you

  1100. know as

  1101. we often

  1102. say when

  1103. we meet

  1104. on a

  1105. Sunday

  1106. morning that

  1107. there is so

  1108. much conflict

  1109. and confusion

  1110. and chaos

  1111. in this

  1112. world.

  1113. And yet

  1114. when we

  1115. come here

  1116. and we

  1117. think about

  1118. the truth

  1119. it is

  1120. something

  1121. that grounds

  1122. us both

  1123. in our

  1124. thoughts and

  1125. in our

  1126. thinking and

  1127. in the way

  1128. that we

  1129. live.

  1130. Truth also

  1131. just reveals

  1132. to us

  1133. God's

  1134. love and

  1135. the purpose

  1136. that he

  1137. has for

  1138. all those

  1139. who believe

  1140. in him.

  1141. And then we

  1142. come on to

  1143. the last point

  1144. here.

  1145. The father

  1146. that has

  1147. been made

  1148. known.

  1149. So what

  1150. does all

  1151. this mean

  1152. as we

  1153. approach

  1154. Christmas?

  1155. You know

  1156. before I

  1157. share some

  1158. points,

  1159. in the

  1160. New Testament

  1161. when we

  1162. read about

  1163. God it

  1164. normally

  1165. refers to

  1166. God as

  1167. a father.

  1168. it's the

  1169. reason that

  1170. the Lord

  1171. Jesus came

  1172. in the

  1173. form that

  1174. he did.

  1175. And when

  1176. you start

  1177. to realise

  1178. just the

  1179. intricacy of

  1180. the whole

  1181. story you

  1182. realise how

  1183. glorious the

  1184. message of

  1185. the gospel

  1186. is.

  1187. Jesus came

  1188. in the

  1189. form of

  1190. a son

  1191. because that's

  1192. how he

  1193. wants us

  1194. to relate

  1195. to God

  1196. as a

  1197. father.

  1198. And in

  1199. the New

  1200. Testament

  1201. that's what

  1202. we see

  1203. right the way

  1204. through.

  1205. We see

  1206. it when

  1207. the disciples

  1208. asked the

  1209. Lord Jesus

  1210. to teach

  1211. us to pray

  1212. he says

  1213. father who

  1214. art in

  1215. heaven.

  1216. Paul in

  1217. all of his

  1218. letters

  1219. when he

  1220. prays he

  1221. prays to

  1222. God as

  1223. a father.

  1224. And the

  1225. Lord Jesus

  1226. has shown

  1227. us the

  1228. relationship

  1229. that we

  1230. can have

  1231. with God

  1232. as a

  1233. father in

  1234. his life

  1235. on earth.

  1236. But what

  1237. does it

  1238. mean when

  1239. we come

  1240. to Christmas

  1241. what does

  1242. this mean

  1243. to us?

  1244. What do

  1245. we take

  1246. from this?

  1247. Well first

  1248. of all it

  1249. reminds us

  1250. that there

  1251. is far

  1252. more to

  1253. this story

  1254. than just

  1255. a baby

  1256. in a

  1257. manger.

  1258. It's a

  1259. story of

  1260. God stepping

  1261. into the

  1262. world.

  1263. to rescue

  1264. us.

  1265. The eternal

  1266. word becomes

  1267. flesh so

  1268. that we

  1269. can know

  1270. God.

  1271. So that we

  1272. can experience

  1273. his love and

  1274. that we can

  1275. be transformed

  1276. by his

  1277. grace.

  1278. Secondly it

  1279. challenges us

  1280. to see Jesus

  1281. for who he

  1282. really is.

  1283. He's not just

  1284. a figure in a

  1285. nativity scene

  1286. or a character

  1287. in a Christmas

  1288. carol.

  1289. He is the

  1290. creator and

  1291. he's come to

  1292. be the

  1293. saviour.

  1294. He's the

  1295. embodiment of

  1296. God's

  1297. glory.

  1298. And if we

  1299. recognise that

  1300. truth it

  1301. should change

  1302. how we

  1303. approach

  1304. Christmas and

  1305. it should

  1306. change how

  1307. we approach

  1308. life.

  1309. It should

  1310. change how

  1311. we live

  1312. day to

  1313. day.

  1314. And finally

  1315. it calls us

  1316. to respond.

  1317. You know if

  1318. Jesus is full

  1319. of grace and

  1320. truth,

  1321. if he is

  1322. the revelation

  1323. of the

  1324. eternal God,

  1325. if he took

  1326. on a

  1327. body and

  1328. as the

  1329. words of

  1330. that carol

  1331. would say

  1332. born that

  1333. man no

  1334. more should

  1335. die, how

  1336. should we

  1337. respond to

  1338. him?

  1339. Will we

  1340. allow his

  1341. grace to

  1342. change our

  1343. lives?

  1344. And will

  1345. we build

  1346. our lives

  1347. on the

  1348. truth that

  1349. he reveals?

  1350. You know

  1351. Christmas time

  1352. it's often

  1353. because we

  1354. take a day

  1355. or two

  1356. off but

  1357. Christmas time

  1358. is a time

  1359. for reflection

  1360. and it's a

  1361. time for

  1362. renewal.

  1363. It's an

  1364. opportunity to

  1365. rediscover

  1366. as we've been

  1367. doing over the

  1368. last three

  1369. weeks in

  1370. these 18

  1371. verses to

  1372. rediscover

  1373. the heart

  1374. of the

  1375. season.

  1376. You know to

  1377. move beyond

  1378. just a

  1379. surface level

  1380. a few

  1381. carols and

  1382. a carol

  1383. service and

  1384. a few

  1385. Bible verses

  1386. on a

  1387. Christmas card

  1388. on the

  1389. mantelpiece.

  1390. And it

  1391. allows us to

  1392. just engage

  1393. with the

  1394. profound

  1395. truths that

  1396. we see

  1397. in this

  1398. section.

  1399. You know as

  1400. we celebrate

  1401. Christmas and

  1402. all the

  1403. busyness you

  1404. know we

  1405. just had a

  1406. conversation

  1407. just before

  1408. we started

  1409. and everybody

  1410. that you

  1411. talked to and

  1412. I'm sure that

  1413. Hazel and the

  1414. team that were

  1415. on the

  1416. welcome team

  1417. this morning

  1418. when they

  1419. shook their

  1420. hand and

  1421. said how

  1422. are they

  1423. then they

  1424. probably said

  1425. I'm busy.

  1426. Well Christmas

  1427. time is a

  1428. busy time but

  1429. let's not allow

  1430. that busyness to

  1431. overshadow and

  1432. distract us from

  1433. the wonder of

  1434. what we're

  1435. celebrating.

  1436. the word

  1437. becomes flesh

  1438. God

  1439. comes near

  1440. his glory is

  1441. revealed and

  1442. it's revealed in

  1443. a gentle way

  1444. that's full of

  1445. grace and

  1446. truth.

  1447. You know

  1448. whatever you are

  1449. in your

  1450. relationship to

  1451. God this

  1452. truth invites us

  1453. to draw near.

  1454. You know if

  1455. you already

  1456. believe then

  1457. it should fill

  1458. our hearts with

  1459. gratitude and it

  1460. should shape the

  1461. way that we

  1462. live our lives

  1463. and that is a

  1464. big challenge to

  1465. us because it

  1466. is so easy to

  1467. just live as

  1468. the people out

  1469. in the street

  1470. rushing about

  1471. our daily lives

  1472. doing all the

  1473. things that on

  1474. the surface

  1475. celebrates Christmas

  1476. the giving of

  1477. presents and the

  1478. kindness and all

  1479. the other festivities

  1480. that we

  1481. enjoy.

  1482. joy.

  1483. But if you're

  1484. uncertain about

  1485. Jesus

  1486. then what I

  1487. want you to do

  1488. is to take this

  1489. season as an

  1490. opportunity to

  1491. just explore his

  1492. love towards

  1493. you and the

  1494. magnitude of

  1495. what he has

  1496. done for you.

  1497. The God of

  1498. heaven the

  1499. eternal creator

  1500. coming in the

  1501. form of

  1502. mankind

  1503. taking on a

  1504. body so that

  1505. that body could

  1506. be put on a

  1507. tree and

  1508. across so that

  1509. you and I

  1510. could be

  1511. reconciled to

  1512. God.

  1513. You know this

  1514. Christmas may

  1515. it may be a

  1516. time for us

  1517. just to reflect

  1518. on that and

  1519. to allow the

  1520. revelation of

  1521. God through

  1522. Jesus to

  1523. illuminate our

  1524. hearts and our

  1525. minds.

  1526. Let's give

  1527. thanks for this

  1528. incredible gift

  1529. and allow this

  1530. grace and truth

  1531. to change our

  1532. lives in a way

  1533. that extends

  1534. far beyond the

  1535. 25th or even

  1536. to the 6th when

  1537. you take your

  1538. Christmas tree

  1539. down but the

  1540. truth that we

  1541. see in the

  1542. Lord Jesus and

  1543. the glory that

  1544. we see of God

  1545. in him let that

  1546. shape our lives

  1547. as we go into

  1548. 2025.

  1549. Let us pray.

  1550. Heavenly

  1551. Father we thank

  1552. you this morning

  1553. for your word

  1554. that reminds us

  1555. of who you

  1556. are.

  1557. A God who is

  1558. full of love,

  1559. a God who

  1560. before the world

  1561. began had a

  1562. wonderful plan of

  1563. salvation that

  1564. would come together

  1565. in the death of

  1566. your son.

  1567. And so our

  1568. Father at this

  1569. time of year we

  1570. thank you for

  1571. this opportunity

  1572. just to reflect on

  1573. the real meaning

  1574. of Christmas, on

  1575. the reason that

  1576. the Lord Jesus

  1577. came into this

  1578. world.

  1579. Our Father we

  1580. thank you that

  1581. in him we see

  1582. your amazing love

  1583. displayed.

  1584. and not only

  1585. your love

  1586. Father but the

  1587. full attributes

  1588. of your glory.

  1589. Father help us

  1590. to be inspired

  1591. by our thoughts

  1592. of him this

  1593. morning.

  1594. Help us to

  1595. praise and to

  1596. worship you for

  1597. all that we see

  1598. in your lovely

  1599. son.

  1600. And our

  1601. Father as we

  1602. spend time

  1603. together with

  1604. family and

  1605. friends may it

  1606. be that we can

  1607. encourage ourselves

  1608. and that we can

  1609. be encouraged

  1610. within ourselves

  1611. as we consider

  1612. him.

  1613. Father we thank

  1614. you for this

  1615. time that we

  1616. have spent

  1617. this morning.

  1618. We thank you

  1619. for all that

  1620. the Lord Jesus

  1621. means to us.

  1622. And we thank

  1623. you for we

  1624. ask his things

  1625. and we give

  1626. thanks in his

  1627. name.

  1628. Amen.

  1629. Amen.
